Tophat notices a tiny insignificant detail and rants about it
im nothing if not a theorist of the people. Anyways! if i only have a week left to make TSE theories then why dont we break down something a bit less chatted for! The Posters! most of the posters have cool details to them, or theory potential that doesnt quite break the records but has more then a few times been evidence to theories so why not just do a formal breakdown of them now. this ones got a lot of pictures Ep 3 poster
couple of basic things for this. a concept thats used for alot of Gen 1 is the use of red and green. in this case its red and green light on his legs. it can also be seen on the TFC promo photos for 'Again', the Ep2 trailer, a handful of different scenes, and also on other posters! the other thing cool about the ep 3 poster is how its a direct mirror of the last and first time we see The Hero.
this was the first time we see The Hero from its similarly named youtube promo piece, and at the time there was even theory that he has blood on his hands. Ep 2 poster
The ep 2 poster, im actually here for the posing. its the beginning warehouse shot, but awake and staring off into the middle distance. I have a theory that this image is actually ranboo in idle. We see on a few occasions that actors or employees not in use get 'paused' in place where they can be managed by the production team and dont really perceive time passing. But at the start of every episode we also see ranboo coming out of idle from TV static. The VHS player in the cabin turns off and ranboo wakes up, the TV Puzzler uses turns off and he wakes up, Hetch's several screen pointing at where ep 2 ends, its a consistent case. ranboo thinks that TSE happened over the course of maybe a day and a half, not over the course of a week. The ep1 trailer shows ranboo staring blankly at the TV in the cabin and i think this poster is the same thing. Ep 1 poster
this poster is a bunch of cool tiny details wrapped together and i love it, this is the poster i own. so heres four cool things 1- hes facing the 4th wall but looking directly away from it. 2- this flashlight is on set but he never uses it, instead during the show he shines it in his eyes between audience choices in the basement several times. 3- its designed to look weathered, spirit of the cabin was based off of old horror and its designed like its been sitting in an attic for 50+ years. 4- on the website the poster is right but on physical copies charlie is credited as "Smilecicle" VHS
im deciding to count this one which is on the genloss twitter, based on how even if its not for purchase, this is a poster. its weathered like the Ep 1 poster, and incorporates green light beaming from it on the ground like other works. All of the posters are representative of their episodes but also show direct changes or discrepancies. For Ep1, there was never an involvement of the flashlight. Ep 2 started by him waking up instead of straight from idle. The Ep 3 poster has him standing idle as the final showing instead of restrained (which was actually made into finished concept art before getting scraped to avoid poster spoilers). And finally the founders glove in the poster is more visually appealing in red but the first time we see the founders collection the gloves were black. Least to say, attention to detail is cool and so is @kertoir who made all of this. Theory Time Before Founders Game!! -Tophat p.s. the list of VHS codes is still being updated daily on my page and i plan to continue that :)

Anyone watch the Junji Ito anime?
It was alright, "uhhh its not as crazy as his art" yeah we all know dude its an anime by netflix. like some I wanted moar of, some I felt are like "what the heck it ended there", and others were like :| :| :| brah what the heck -=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Episode 1; starting with the hikizuri siblings set the stage of just "what in the sam hell is going on" pretty good
ep 2; the weird ice cream man made me just go "what the sam dickens", the tunnel was….. I wanted moar
ep 3; was hanging balloons and that was neat, I feel like the concept is only half done
ep 4; 4x4 walls… bruh wtf is this family and nail boy and why does it start with nail boy in a yellow raincoat and a wickerman tho it was never commented on. the sandmans lair is another one of those, what the heck stories.
ep 5: the intruder is one I wanted to see allot more of as It leaves the ominous cliffhanger. long hair attic was …. uh….. bad (que meme of girl showing satan the guy she did a big bad for)
ep 6: Mold,…….. …. Its understandable story, the first house all that stood was a burnt down house rounds it out. the brother not leaving instantly is what feels like a … bro this is some cartoon stuff, I don't know anyone who'd go into a house with that much mold again. I Wouldn't let my brother that's for sure.
Library vision was really interesting, a man obsessed with books. tortured by his books. a really interesting video thats kinda hard to comment on. a vod I watched on the topic was really swell
ep 7: Tomb Town …. brooooooooooooo what an episode, lets start it off with some reaaaal shiiittt (>y<)tomb towns story is interesting It was one of my more liked episodes with a simple idea to grasp. DONT MOVE THE DEAD.
ep 8: layers of terror … is …. probably my favorite story next to library vision. the whole concept of family … the idea of ripping of the skin, i hate it …. and the moms cut at the end…. and the ending of the sister watching over them… reminds me of me.
The thing that drifted Ashore - a fish folklore that I've seen allot of in anime but to see this version with no ending…. made me want more and felt like sexual frustration as I wanted to know what the parasites where gonna do.
ep 9. Tomie - Photo: … I kinda felt disturbed when it was later on and the scene where they do the stuff in the room like burning…. damn man. and then the body getting up after the first head (2 heads) said to burn it it was like :| is she gonna eat tomie. nope tomie just moves on with her live. life is life lol.
ep 10. Unedurable labyrinth, well living in the mountains far from the citys but still reachable I'd always think there'd be something like this out here. the story was alright, It seemed like one girl was gonna join. and them being put with a girl who's looking for her brother felt like a test. it was kinda all over the place.
The Bully- I FRIGGEN hated it, I do not like these stories I dont like watching these stories. the ending was just Captin ked up.
Ep 11: Alley- A neat lil quick story that gets you hooked and wanting it to be a full episode. but it ends right when it feels like its about to get good.
Headless Statue- the japanese are just kinda weird art they. I understand it, while also not understanding any of it kinda feeling.
ep 12: Whispering Woman - I liked this story, i feel for her. the whispering woman, and the dooter. may they live a good life after.
Soichi's Beleved Pet - were back with the family from episode 4, they get a cat. and the cat goes full evil cause of nail boy or something. it ending of with a giant static shock was hilarious, suprised he lived with having metal in his mouth.
overall high mid.

I shouldn’t watch this when I’m this maudlin. UGH.
I would have preferred that the episode Imaginary Friends (s7ep20) had culminated in Changed Future Chris coming back in time to confront Wyatt (who had been turned evil again due to Vicus’ shenanigans), and the big reveal is that their powers were equal.
I genuinely believe that Chris...having Wyatt NOT become the evil ruler of the world (and bully/manipulate him), having his mother NOT die, and having his father stick around and actually parent...would have exhibited powers on par with Wyatt, and been taught how to harness them (ie: healing) by his parents.
There’s not a justifiable reason why Chris, who has the same parents as Wyatt, would have LESS powers. Since Wyatt was conceived when Leo was a Whitelighter, and Chris when Leo was an Elder, and argument could be made that Chris should have MORE powers, other than the writers said “for reasons”.
UGH...

THE BEST JAZZ ALBUMS 2021 (SO FAR)
This album was recorded 45 years ago but sound so fresh like a recent release from a young band. Previously unreleased Marcos Resende & Index self-titled debut album from 1976, contributing a crucial missing work from the glory days of progressive Brazilian instrumental music. Resende in 76 after touring Europe with his previous band returned home to Brazil as an established highly regarded keyboardist, composer, and innovative electronic musician. Inspired and invigorated by US jazz and British progressive rock he'd experienced while residing in Europe, Resende went all out acquiring a keyboard arsenal to be reckoned with, which included the Prophet 5, Yamaha CP-708 and Mini Moog. Determined to integrate his newfound inspirations with Brazilian rhythms and jazz traditions, he formed a new quartet with Rubão Sabino (bass), Claudio Caribé (drums) and the late great Oberdan Magalhães, of Banda Black Rio and Cry Babies fame. Marcos Resende & Index recorded their self-titled debut at Sonoviso Studios with the legendary sound engineer Toninho Barbosa, known as the 'Brazilian Rudy Van Gelder' whose impressive resumé includes the era defining classics Light As A Feather by Azymuth, Previsão Do Tempo by Marcos Valle, and Quem É Quem by João Donato. Marcos Resende & Index fits perfectly amongst these masterpieces, sharing both the timeless ethereal qualities as well as the progressive and futuristic ideals of Light As A Feather in particular. Marcos Resende & Index by Marcos Resende & Index Mathias Modica's Sonic Rohstoff is the new album on Kryptox Music. Sonic Rohstoff is a journey through abstract downtempo vibes, lofi jazz and futuristic electronica. Most people might know Modica from his earlier works as a producer, keyboard player and founder/ creative mind behind Toy Tonics, Gomma and Kryptox. Over the past two decades he has made a name for himself by discovering and breaking new talent and styles of music. This is Modica's first album under his own name, following three albums under his monikers Kapote and Munk. All instruments are performed by Modica himself, embellished by guest musicians from the new Berlin Jazz scene. Sonic Rohstoff by Mathias Modica Zurich-based musician Arthur Hnatek is one of a new breed of players who see their music as a continuum stretching between genres, always thinking in terms of links rather than boundaries, possibilities rather than limits. His time spent playing drums with similarly adventurous and unclassifiable artists Tigran Hamasyan and Shai Maestro opened his ears to the possibilities of rhythmic variation: his immersion in electronic music production and the motorik tradition of Jaki Liebzeit alerted him the possibilities of repetition. Now, with Static, he presents his first trio record: joined by his equally fearless bandmates Fabien Iannone on bass and Francesco Geminiani on tenor sax, this is music created by classic jazz line-up and steeped in an improvisational facility, yet simultaneously utterly unlike anything in the standard jazz tradition. Static by Arthur Hnatek Trio
Marcelo Monteiro, a saxophonist from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has played with various Brazilian and international artists and at the same time was developing his own authorial work. Has excelled in the jazz scene in São Paulo, currently, he has performed with his group, which may be in trio, quartet or quintet version. With his group plays compositions of his own. His music follows the style of groove, funk and modern jazz, simple but very creative themes, with a hint of Brazilian swing. On his new album, Deyeh, he experimented with arrangements with flutes and saxophones, exploring the sound combining contemporary jazz, Brazilian rhythms, in a modern concept. The album was recorded remotely with each musician recording from their own home studio. Deyeh by Marcelo Monteiro
Sankofa by Amaro Freitas World-renowned drummer/composer, & producer/beatmaker, Myele Manzanza, has proved that he's an artist who continues to dissolve the borders between modern jazz and electronic beat production. Having released three solo albums, and racking up tours and collaborations with Jordan Rakei, Theo Parrish, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Recloose and Amp Fiddler amongst others. Myele is already developing a strong live presence in his new London base; his quartet has shared stages with the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, The Bad Plus, Alfa Mist, and drawing packed houses to top venues such as The Jazz Café and Ronnie Scott's. Crisis & Opportunity Vol.1 - London features a top tier cast of young London based talent including Ashley Henry (piano), James Copus (trumpet), George Crowley (tenor saxophone), Benjamin Muralt (bass) and additional contributions from the legendary Mark de Clive-Lowe (synths), with Myele Manzanza (drums) captaining the ship. Crisis & Opportunity Vol. 1 - London by Myele Manzanza Kaidi Tatham is a legendary multi-instrumentalist. Once dubbed "the UK's Herbie Hancock" by Benji B, he's a virtuoso on the keys and a true innovator in sound production as one of the original creators of the Broken Beat sound. Over the years his musical prowess has blessed numerous projects, initially with the likes of Bugz In The Attic and The Herbaliser, and more recently with DJ Jazzy Jeff (through the PLAYlist projects), Andrew Ashong (on the acclaimed Sankofa Season EP last year) and with a longtime accomplice, Dego. This is in addition to session work for artists such as Mulatu Astatke, Slum Village or Amy Winehouse. An Insight To All Minds is Kaidi's 3rd solo album under his own name, following several EPs and two albums for First Word; 2018's acclaimed It's A World Before You and the re-press of his seminal 2008 sophomore album In Search Of Hope last year. An Insight To All Minds by Kaidi Tatham JAUBI continue the Nafs journey, which commenced with the single Satanic Nafs (featuring the remix by legendary LA producers The Gaslamp Killer & Mophono) released in March 2021. Now JAUBI draw on the elements of North Indian classical music, Hip-Hop and modal/spiritual jazz in their debut LP entitled Nafs At Peace. The journey officially began back in April 2019 when London's multi-instrumentalist and 22a Record label boss Ed "Tenderlonious" Cawthorne and Polish pianist/composer Marek "Latarnik" Pędziwiatr of EABS/Błoto, visited the group to record in Lahore. Together they channeled their personal struggles at that time into the two recording sessions allowing the musicians to find a spiritual path through this musical purge. Nafs at Peace by Jaubi Australian 9-piece Spiritual Jazz group Menagerie announce their highly anticipated third album 'Many Worlds', released 15th January 2021 on esteemed U.K label Freestyle Records. Menagerie is the Melbourne-based Jazz ensemble founded by producer, songwriter, guitarist, DJ and recording artist Lance Ferguson, also the driving force behind The Bamboos, Lanu, Rare Groove Spectrum and Machines Always Win. Recorded at Union Street Studio by award-winning engineer John Castle, 'Many Worlds' features some of Australia's finest musicians, including pianist Mark Fitzgibbon (a regular performer at Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge's original Dingwalls sessions), drummer Daniel Farrugia and renowned saxophonist Phil Noy (The Bamboos). Inspired by both the post-Coltrane generation of the 70's, labels like Strata-East, Impulse! and Tribe, along with the current 'New Wave Of Jazz', Menagerie aligns with the world of Kamasi Washington, Shabaka Hutchings and Nubya Garcia, whilst also bringing their own unique twist. Many Worlds by Menagerie Astonishing new work from the fertile creative mind of tenor saxophonist-composer James Brandon Lewis. Performed by the Red Lily Quintet (James Brandon Lewis, Kirk Knuffke, William Parker, Chris Hoffman, Chad Taylor), an exceptional & singular inter-generational ensemble, this album speaks to the forever-evolving continuum of the jazz tradition. Voted Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist in the 2020 DownBeat Magazine International Critic's Poll, James Brandon Lewis supercharges his remarkable evolution with Jesup Wagon, a brilliant and evocative appreciation of the life and legacy of turn-of-the-19th century African-American musician-painter-writer-scientist George Washington Carver. Jesup Wagon by James Brandon Lewis / Red Lily Quintet
John Carroll Kirby's Septet album was recorded live in the studio with a range of talents playing keys, vibes, bass, percussion and drums. The composer and keyboardist leads the charge and approached the album wanting to play with the chaos of jazz fashion in the 70's/80's, bands like Weather Report and Miles Davis. He sure does that but there is beauty in the madness, with plenty of lush and golden keys dancing above lithe and ad hoc rhythms. Septet by John Carroll Kirby Matt Carmichael released his debut album on his own label, Porthole Music. He has already developed quite a profile and an impressive list of collaborations; he also reached the finals of BBC Young Jazz Musician 2020. His quartet, formed five years ago, consists of his contemporaries, award-winning Fergus McCreadie on piano, Ali Watson on bass and Tom Potter on drums. Like McCreadie, Carmichael creates music that feels highly personal, fusing an energetic yet sensitive modern jazz into a bedrock of Scottish traditional music. Where Will The River Flow by Matt Carmichael Taking cues from Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane at their most delicate, renowned Welsh harpist Amanda Whiting's mesmerizing Jazzman full-length LP After Dark arrives as soft as moonlight to gladden the soul and delight the ear-without forgetting to bring the swing. Summoning the nocturnal mood suggested by the album's title, Whiting's harp flows and cascades, dances and alights, broods and haunts, informed by a deep understanding of both classical and jazz music, ultimately revealing a top-drawer composer with rare melodic gifts at the top of her game. After Dark by Amanda Whiting JD73's Electrio - Pyramid is a colourful & energetic live recording session presenting 8 incredible pieces of music. Dan 'JD73' Goldman is known the world over for his contributions to the world of Jazz & modern electronic soul music and is backed up on Pyramid by Hamlet Luton (Bass) and Gordon Kilroy (Drums) completing the ElecTrio. Dan's ability to construct these incredible melodic gems centered on the sound of the Rhodes Piano is something to behold. This is a real collectors album and if you're a fan of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Bob James & George Duke you need this on your record shelf for sure. recommended digital releases, april 6th
a large majority of the music i listen to these days is done at work through a premium spotify subscription. the hardest part seems to be trying to remember when an album i’ve been anticipating finally comes out on whatever random friday.
i figure i’m not the only one so every friday i’m aiming to post five new releases from the past week (or so) as well as five recent releases from the past couple months that are available through spotify (and presumably the other streaming platforms).
new releases from the past week (or so):
air waves "warrior" on western vinyl [spotify, bandcamp] the fourth album from air waves (everyone seems to ignore their self-released album from 2006) is full of dreamy mid-tempo numbers that share the warm synths and patience of east river pipe.
haley heynderickx "i need to start a garden" on mama bird [spotify, bandcamp] haley heynderickx's debut album wraps small, novel orchestratations (such as trombone, classical guitar, upright bass in "the bug collector") around her stark voice full of power, pathos and humor. the album pits these quiet moments agains full band arrangements (sometimes even in the same song, see "worth it") that keep the album from ever feeling static.
alasdair roberts, amble skuse and david mcguinness "what news" on drag city [spotify, bandcamp] alasdair roberts has been exploring british isle folk over the past decade. the arrangements for his latest album are centered around the piano of david mcguinness and the electronics of amble skuse. on a related note, earlier this week drag city finally brought their their entire catalog to spotify, tidal, et al. (with the unfortunate exception of releases by will oldham, jim o'rourke and joanna newsom).
sloan "twelve" on yep roc [spotify, bandcamp] sloan is so consistent that i almost don't even need to listen to their twelfth album to talk about it. it's full of soaring power pop from four songwriters that have been playing together for almost thirty years. they came up during the first alternative wave of the nineties and released two albums on a major label- geffen's alt-rock imprint dgc. since then they've released their last ten albums through their own murderecords in canada and licensed the last five to yep roc for the states.
vintage crop "new age" on anti fade [spotify, bandcamp] garage-y post-punk from australia that channels gang of four's consumer nihilism straight from the get-go as the first song declares "i just want to live the american lifestyle".
slightly older stuff:
attic abasement "dancing is depressing (expanded edition)" on father/daughter [spotify, bandcamp] this is first proper issues of the 2010 cd-r by attic abasement. the album reminds me of jason anderson with his hopeful exuberance replaced by dark anxieties.
sandra bell "net" on drawing room [spotify, bandcamp] sandra bell's second album from 1995 gets an expanded reissue to remind you of all the cool rock that was going on twenty some years ago outside of mtv's buzz bins. her album combines the psychedelic pop of the sixties with angular indie rock yielding something that whispers of sonic youth, bardo pond and barbara manning.
lucas niggli "alchemia garden" on intakt [spotify, bandcamp] awesome drums and percussion album from lucas nigglo that explores ambient and new age themes and immediately brought to mind the fantastic eli keszler album from 2016.
sun ra "of abstract dreams" strut [spotify, bandcamp] previously unreleased ra recordings from the mid-seventies. many are built over sunny's piano romping while some are centered on rhythm and chants.
the whooperups "sensible daydreams ep" on everything sucks [spotify, bandcamp] the excellent four song debut ep from the whooperups features a member of the spook school and has the whole c-86 crossed with sixties girl groups sound that i can't pass up. the single came out a year ago and it somehow ended up in my discogs wantlist (probably due to the excellent did not chart blog) but i failed to make a note anywhere else. it conveniently cropped up on a seller's list today when i went to place an order so here we are!
