Effects of Smog on Biodiversity
Influence of Environmental Hazards on Biodiversity:
Imagine that you are having a picnic with your family in an open area such as a Park. You were having your best time, but suddenly you feel a very bad odor at that picnic point. This will lead to discomfort and uneasiness while sitting there. This is an example of Environmental Hazards. Another example is the recent scenario of Smog. During peak smog days, you avoid to go outside the house because you cannot breathe properly, your throat hurts and there is irritation in your eyes. Here we discussed the influence of Environmental Hazards on Human Beings.
Just as the Human beings, other forms of Biodiversity also face difficulties and discomfort when they get exposed to any Environmental Hazard. For example, Smog disturbs the Migration of animals from one place to another because of reduced visibility and changes in the Environmental Composition. Heat waves leads to death of Birds and small animals every year because they do not get enough water during heat waves. Wildfires can destroy huge variety of Biodiversity within few hours and can destroy complete Forests with its heat and fire.
Ocean Acidification is also a very dangerous Environmental Hazard for the Marine Ecosystem. As it disturbs the Ocean Composition by decreasing the pH of the Ocean and the increased Acidity cause the destruction of important Biodiversity Hotspots of the Ocean called Coral reefs. This also cause death of animals living in the Coral Reefs. In this way, Environmental Hazards Influence the life of Biodiversity on Earth. This is why we give importance to shelter and protection of Living Organisms rather than leaving them in the open Environment. This blog contains Effect of Smog on Biodiversity.
What are the Effects of Smog on Human Beings?
Following are some effects of Smog on Human Beings:
i. Irritation in Respiratory Tract:
Smog cast the immediate effect on humans by causing irritation and disturbance to their Respiratory Tract. It may irritate the sensitive organs that are open in the Smog. Such as smog may enter through your mouth, passing through your throat and then your lungs. This may cause pain and itchiness in your throat. In the same way it can cause Lung inflammation that makes it difficult to breathe properly. This can be very dangerous for the people with weak immune system or people already having breathing disorders.
ii. Irritation in Eyes and Nose:
Smog can also irritant for your eyes and nose. People who have weak eyes or any other eye problem, may face severe irritation, pain and redness in their eyes during Smog Season. The people having Sinus, congestion or blockage of nose throughout the year, may feel severe effects of Smog when they are exposed to it. We should cover our nose and take care of our eyes when we are forced to go out in the smog even for a short time. You can read about the ways to Manage Smog Seasons in another blog on our website.
iii. Triggers Respiratory Disorders:
Smog can be a Nightmare for the people who are diagnosed with Respiratory disorders. The patients having Asthma, Tuberculosis, Lung diseases and other such Respiratory Disorders, can have a hard time in Smog Season. The pollutants present in the Smog may trigger the Respiratory disorder and make their symptoms worse and difficult to manage. You may need immediate medical help in the Smog Season. It is because Smog interferes to your Respiratory System and disturbs its proper working. The respiratory patients should be aware of the extreme effects of Smog and take care of their health in Smog Season.

Scientists using high-flying aircraft to sample the upper atmosphere have found metal elements in aerosol particles they say are from thousands of rocket boosters and satellites that have re-entered from space. While rocket launches are increasing in frequency, the cumulative effect of this newly discovered form of pollution is u1 The Earth's atmosphere has been a dumping ground for derelict satellites, rocket boosters and even entire space stations since the beginning of the space age. According to data collected by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs the cumulative number of satellites launched into space since 1957 exceeds 14,000. When a satellite reaches the end of its design lifetime, it either falls out of orbit or is driven down into the atmosphere for disposal to prevent it from becoming a hazard in the near-Earth space environment. The atmosphere is a convenient garbage disposal system because objects in orbit are traveling at roughly 30,000 km/h, so except for the largest and most robust pieces of them, they are incinerated when they hit the air. ... But the metals those objects are made of are vapourized, and researchers have found that they can remain in the atmosphere for some time.

ae recently learned that it’s likely that the impact of the meteor itself is not what wiped out the dinosaurs, but rather the meteor essentially disintegrating immediately and polluting the air that killed them
#in that sense it’s kinda like. a mix of the two most popular theories?#cause ‘really fuckin big volcano ‘splosion killed em’ was a common idea for a while#and it wasn’t the eruption itself but rather the pollution of the air as a result that was thought to have killed them#so it was a meteor that hit the earth that then polluted the air#(and while ae’m sure plenty died from toxins in the air or straight up suffocation)#(a lot more died because the plant life died and thus. starvation)#(also because the earth’s atmosphere hangs in a precarious balance and has caused mass extinctions on several occasions)#(hell literal bacteria just existing caused a global warming event when life was first getting its footing)#(we uh. we like science channels. we just don’t retain the actually important stuff)#(like how exactly the ‘whoopsie the earth’s gaseous contents are out of whack!’ thing works)#(what part of it? idk somethin about carbon dioxide probably)#(that definitely killed a fuck ton of things at least once)#(cause life started out breathing carbon dioxide and then started suffocating when oxygen became more abundant)#(and now we have a balancing act between plants and animals and those Other Things™️)#(y’know what? just. watch paleo analysis’ history of earth series and gutsick gibbons mass extinction video)#(they’ll both explain this shit infinitely better than ae can)

When you have time, could you draw what the sky looks like on Siren during the day and night?
i'll keep it mind though environmental drawings are not high on my priorities list. To give you an idea of what it looks like, there's 30+ moons and about 18 of these are constantly visible day and night and the orbits vary wildly so the moons you might see one night will not be the moons you see the next night, there's little consistency. Some are more obvious than others (the moon Cherta has a reddish/yellow colour due to high iron content, Ishmael is the biggest and brightest white, and Davide is the one most like the Earth's moon in terms of its orbit and it's the most consistent and predictable)
#sky during the day is somewhat greenish due to the refractive properties of the upper atmosphere#sky at night is very dark and empty of light pollution#setting: siren

Study finds health risks in switching ships from diesel to ammonia fuel
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/study-finds-health-risks-in-switching-ships-from-diesel-to-ammonia-fuel/
Study finds health risks in switching ships from diesel to ammonia fuel
As container ships the size of city blocks cross the oceans to deliver cargo, their huge diesel engines emit large quantities of air pollutants that drive climate change and have human health impacts. It has been estimated that maritime shipping accounts for almost 3 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions and the industry’s negative impacts on air quality cause about 100,000 premature deaths each year.
Decarbonizing shipping to reduce these detrimental effects is a goal of the International Maritime Organization, a U.N. agency that regulates maritime transport. One potential solution is switching the global fleet from fossil fuels to sustainable fuels such as ammonia, which could be nearly carbon-free when considering its production and use.
But in a new study, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from MIT and elsewhere caution that burning ammonia for maritime fuel could worsen air quality further and lead to devastating public health impacts, unless it is adopted alongside strengthened emissions regulations.
Ammonia combustion generates nitrous oxide (N2O), a greenhouse gas that is about 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide. It also emits nitrogen in the form of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2, referred to as NOx), and unburnt ammonia may slip out, which eventually forms fine particulate matter in the atmosphere. These tiny particles can be inhaled deep into the lungs, causing health problems like heart attacks, strokes, and asthma.
The new study indicates that, under current legislation, switching the global fleet to ammonia fuel could cause up to about 600,000 additional premature deaths each year. However, with stronger regulations and cleaner engine technology, the switch could lead to about 66,000 fewer premature deaths than currently caused by maritime shipping emissions, with far less impact on global warming.
“Not all climate solutions are created equal. There is almost always some price to pay. We have to take a more holistic approach and consider all the costs and benefits of different climate solutions, rather than just their potential to decarbonize,” says Anthony Wong, a postdoc in the MIT Center for Global Change Science and lead author of the study.
His co-authors include Noelle Selin, an MIT professor in the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society and the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS); Sebastian Eastham, a former principal research scientist who is now a senior lecturer at Imperial College London; Christine Mounaïm-Rouselle, a professor at the University of Orléans in France; Yiqi Zhang, a researcher at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and Florian Allroggen, a research scientist in the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The research appears this week in Environmental Research Letters.
Greener, cleaner ammonia
Traditionally, ammonia is made by stripping hydrogen from natural gas and then combining it with nitrogen at extremely high temperatures. This process is often associated with a large carbon footprint. The maritime shipping industry is betting on the development of “green ammonia,” which is produced by using renewable energy to make hydrogen via electrolysis and to generate heat.
“In theory, if you are burning green ammonia in a ship engine, the carbon emissions are almost zero,” Wong says.
But even the greenest ammonia generates nitrous oxide (N2O), nitrogen oxides (NOx) when combusted, and some of the ammonia may slip out, unburnt. This nitrous oxide would escape into the atmosphere, where the greenhouse gas would remain for more than 100 years. At the same time, the nitrogen emitted as NOx and ammonia would fall to Earth, damaging fragile ecosystems. As these emissions are digested by bacteria, additional N2O is produced.
NOx and ammonia also mix with gases in the air to form fine particulate matter. A primary contributor to air pollution, fine particulate matter kills an estimated 4 million people each year.
“Saying that ammonia is a ‘clean’ fuel is a bit of an overstretch. Just because it is carbon-free doesn’t necessarily mean it is clean and good for public health,” Wong says.
A multifaceted model
The researchers wanted to paint the whole picture, capturing the environmental and public health impacts of switching the global fleet to ammonia fuel. To do so, they designed scenarios to measure how pollutant impacts change under certain technology and policy assumptions.
From a technological point of view, they considered two ship engines. The first burns pure ammonia, which generates higher levels of unburnt ammonia but emits fewer nitrogen oxides. The second engine technology involves mixing ammonia with hydrogen to improve combustion and optimize the performance of a catalytic converter, which controls both nitrogen oxides and unburnt ammonia pollution.
They also considered three policy scenarios: current regulations, which only limit NOx emissions in some parts of the world; a scenario that adds ammonia emission limits over North America and Western Europe; and a scenario that adds global limits on ammonia and NOx emissions.
The researchers used a ship track model to calculate how pollutant emissions change under each scenario and then fed the results into an air quality model. The air quality model calculates the impact of ship emissions on particulate matter and ozone pollution. Finally, they estimated the effects on global public health.
One of the biggest challenges came from a lack of real-world data, since no ammonia-powered ships are yet sailing the seas. Instead, the researchers relied on experimental ammonia combustion data from collaborators to build their model.
“We had to come up with some clever ways to make that data useful and informative to both the technology and regulatory situations,” he says.
A range of outcomes
In the end, they found that with no new regulations and ship engines that burn pure ammonia, switching the entire fleet would cause 681,000 additional premature deaths each year.
“While a scenario with no new regulations is not very realistic, it serves as a good warning of how dangerous ammonia emissions could be. And unlike NOx, ammonia emissions from shipping are currently unregulated,” Wong says.
However, even without new regulations, using cleaner engine technology would cut the number of premature deaths down to about 80,000, which is about 20,000 fewer than are currently attributed to maritime shipping emissions. With stronger global regulations and cleaner engine technology, the number of people killed by air pollution from shipping could be reduced by about 66,000.
“The results of this study show the importance of developing policies alongside new technologies,” Selin says. “There is a potential for ammonia in shipping to be beneficial for both climate and air quality, but that requires that regulations be designed to address the entire range of potential impacts, including both climate and air quality.”
Ammonia’s air quality impacts would not be felt uniformly across the globe, and addressing them fully would require coordinated strategies across very different contexts. Most premature deaths would occur in East Asia, since air quality regulations are less stringent in this region. Higher levels of existing air pollution cause the formation of more particulate matter from ammonia emissions. In addition, shipping volume over East Asia is far greater than elsewhere on Earth, compounding these negative effects.
In the future, the researchers want to continue refining their analysis. They hope to use these findings as a starting point to urge the marine industry to share engine data they can use to better evaluate air quality and climate impacts. They also hope to inform policymakers about the importance and urgency of updating shipping emission regulations.
This research was funded by the MIT Climate and Sustainability Consortium.

How to Prevent Smog?
What are the Sustainable Strategies to Prevent Smog?
To Prevent Smog, means to prevent Air Pollution into the Atmosphere. Following are some of the Sustainable Strategies to Prevent Smog:
Use Renewable Energy Sources
Promoted Electric Vehicles
Removal of Pollutants before emission
Conservation of Energy and Natural Resources
Use Air Purifiers
Avoid any type of Burning
Reduce Light Pollution
i. Use Renewable Energy Sources:
The use of Fossil Fuels in Industrial Activity is Non-sustainable for the Environment. As it adds NOx, SOX, COX etc. into the Environment and Atmosphere. The smog increased its intensity after the Industrial Era. So this shows that, humans have contributed in the Smog Formation at a great level. The best way to get rid of Extreme Smog conditions is to use Renewable Energy in place of Fossil Fuel Burning. The renewable energy sources creates negligible amounts of GHGs that are way better than the effects of Fossil Fuel Burning. This can be a sustainable way to prevent Smog.
ii. Promote Electric Vehicles:
The Transportation is a big source of COX, NOx and SOX production in the Environment. The fossil fuel combustion engines emits dangerous amounts of toxic Air Pollutants into the atmosphere every day. And this emission is increasing every year with increase in Population. We should promote and spread awareness about the Advantages of Electric Vehicles. These Vehicles completely relies on Electrical Energy to drive for miles and hours. This can be a sustainable solution for Smog prevention. Many countries have produced Cost-effective Electric Vehicles for people and they have seen reduction in Air Pollution.
iii. Removal of pollutants before Emission:
The Industrial sector is one of the most significant contributor of Air Pollution that involves in Smog formation. The best way to avoid toxic emissions is to install Scrubbers in the Chimneys of Industries in order to remove the harmful pollutants from the emissions before entering into the Atmosphere. Another Sustainable solution is that, we can remove Nitrogen and Sulfur from fuels before using them for the industrial purposes. This can help a lot in reducing the NOx and SOX emissions into the Environment. Both of these ways are suitable and Sustainable to prevent Smog.
iv. Conservation of Energy and Natural Resources:
If we will use less energy and less Natural Resources, the pollution will be reduced. In the present era, most of the pollution is because of excessive energy consumption and inefficient energy appliances. By conserving energy, we can avoid excessive emissions of toxic Air Pollutants. In the same way over-exploitation of Natural Resources can cause pressure on the Natural Environment and produce Air Pollution, Land Pollution and Water pollution. This contributes in the Smog Formation eventually. So the conservation of Energy and Natural Resources is a Sustainable Solution for Smog Prevention.
v. Use Air Purifiers:
Smog is not just dangerous outside of your house. You should take precautions of smog when you are even in your room or indoor. Smog enters into the houses and pollutes the indoor air of the houses. For fighting this condition, we can use Air purifiers in our homes. These Air Purifiers remove the Toxic Air Pollutants from the air and makes the air clean for breathing and surviving. This can help in avoid health problems related to Smog for you and your Family. Air purifiers are the best and Sustainable option to apply during Smog Season.
vi. Avoid Any type of Burning:
The burning of trash, agricultural wastes, wood and other such materials adds intensity to the Smog during Smog season. We should be aware of the Impacts of burning any materials in the Smog season. The best way to avoid it, is to collect the waste and put it on appropriate locations where it cannot disturb you. During smog season, any kind of burning can cause extreme Environmental Conditions including extreme levels of Smog. By avoiding burning we can deal with the Smog Formation by reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere. This can be a sustainable step towards preventing Smog.
vii. Reduce Light Pollution:
Light pollution is the pollution that is created from artificial light resources. In normal days, light pollution is toxic for people but unfortunately in Smog season, the impacts of Light Pollution becomes worst. The CO2 emissions and other health effects of Light Pollution may be enhanced during Smog Season. We can contribute in reducing the Light Pollution by using Energy Saving Lights, avoid extra use of lights, be careful about utilization of lights during day time etc. By these little efforts we can reduce the impacts of Light Pollution during Smog season. This will also reduce emissions that are part of Smog Formation. This is a Sustainable Solution towards .
These are some of the Sustainable Strategies that you can apply in reducing your contribution in Smog Formation. Other strategies includes Planting a Tree, Avoid Deforestation etc. These are the ways that are useful against the Smog Formation or helps in reducing the Extreme Effects of the Smog on Humans and Environment. We should follow these strategies to avoid extreme impacts of Smog.

“Mexico says it will prohibit experiments with solar geoengineering, a strategy that purports to reverse global warming by reflecting sunlight but is still fraught with concern over other potential consequences that could come with altering Earth’s atmosphere. The move follows controversial attempts by a geoengineering startup to deploy reflective particles into the stratosphere.
The company, called Make Sunsets, conducted the field tests without prior notice or consent from the Mexican government, according to the ban announced late last week by the country’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources. The ban is meant to protect communities and the environment in the absence of any international agreements for how to regulate this kind of experimentation that could have consequences on a planetary scale, the announcement says.”

🌍 Welcome to Clean Earth Fun Facts! 🌍
Welcome back to Clean Earth Fun Facts, where we share the most fun and enlightening facts about our beautiful planet and how we can all contribute to keeping it clean and green! Today, we’re addressing a significant environmental issue: smog.
🌫️ What is Smog? 🌫️
Smog is a type of intense air pollution characterized by a mixture of smoke and fog. It typically arises from the burning of fossil fuels, which releases a complex mix of chemicals into the atmosphere. Smog can have serious health and environmental impacts.
🌟 Fun Facts about Smog 🌟
Origin of the Term: The word "smog" is a blend of "smoke" and "fog." It was coined in the early 20th century to describe the thick, grayish haze that blanketed cities during industrialization.
Two Types of Smog: There are two main types of smog: sulfurous (or "London smog"), which is caused by burning coal, and photochemical smog (or "Los Angeles smog"), which is formed when sunlight reacts with pollutants like nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Health Effects: Exposure to smog can lead to respiratory issues, eye irritation, and long-term diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. It's particularly harmful to children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Global Issue: While smog is commonly associated with large cities, it can occur anywhere that has significant pollution sources and the right weather conditions.
🌍 How to Reduce Smog 🌍
Switch to Clean Energy: Using renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydroelectric power reduces the amount of fossil fuels burned, thus cutting down on smog.
Improve Public Transportation: Encouraging the use of public transport, carpooling, and non-motorized transport like cycling can reduce vehicle emissions.
Adopt Eco-Friendly Practices: Industries can adopt cleaner technologies and practices to minimize emissions. Individuals can contribute by using energy-efficient appliances and reducing waste.
Support Policies and Regulations: Advocate for and support government policies aimed at reducing air pollution and promoting environmental sustainability.
🌿 Fun Fact 🌿

Light rainfall is expected to scatter across the region beginning Wednesday, with heavier showers this weekend
Jan. 17, 2024 - Los Angeles Magazine
...According to the National Weather Service, a storm system is set to bring plenty of wind and some rain to the region Wednesday. Any areas that don't see rain will still get cloud cover.
“Periods of rain, potentially heavy at times, will be possible across most of the area late Friday through Monday,” NWS said. “Don’t expect to see the sun for a while as Southern California enters into a cloudy and increasingly wet period..."
Air quality is simultaneously deteriorating, with SoCal residents being told to halt their outdoor activity.
“Usually, [we can get] an idea as to why we are seeing this poor air quality … it might be a consistent ridge of high pressure that sits on top of us for days and traps pollutants,” KTLA 5 meteorologist Henry DiCarlo reported. “Oftentimes it could be from recent fires or an ongoing fire, but we just have some poor air quality going on and it’s worth mentioning because if you do any type of [outdoor] physical exercise, you need to be aware of that.”
Amazing that the DOR is mentioned, but is described as inexplicable "air pollution!" You can expect DOR before rain, and as it lifts, it goes through stages that people think is "smog." Meteorologists continue to be confused about this because their science doesn't look at the energetic reasons for weather.
In this case, the shift in energy from DOR to OR which results in rain causes particulates in the air to lift and pollution is actually removed from the earth. It's been raining (rained here this morning) and there are no fires in SoCal. DOR lifting is a regular pattern before rain, and it is not air pollution, but rather the cleansing of the atmosphere because of orgonite gifting!
