I wish I could go to the Nashville show instead of the Atlanta one (only bc Nashville is the birth place of Sister Daniel) but the drive is an extra hour and a half. My ass is not paying for that gas 😔😔😔

"SO YOU AND DARYL?" Lori watched Rick heading towards camp, getting ready to go back to the city for the lost Dixon. "That's your plan?"
Willow and Glenn stood beside each other, Rick shooting Glenn a look. "Oh, come on." Glenn sighed.
"You know the way, you've been there before. In and out, no problem. You said so yourself."
Glenn took off his hat, rubbing his head anxiously.
"I'll come." Willow spoke up. "I've been in Atlanta for a little bit now. I may not be as familiar with it as Glenn, but I can help." Not only that, but it was another chance for her to possibly find her brother.
Rick looked over to her, a glimpse of doubt in his eye for a second, but he nodded.
Daryl grunted off to the side, wiping his arrows with a red cloth. "My day just gets better and better, don't it?" Willow glared at him.
"That's just great, now you're gonna risk three of our people, huh?" Shane said with a disgusted look on his face, glimpsing towards Willow and Rick. "You're putting every single one of us at risk, just know that Rick. You saw that walker." Shane pointed out into the woods. "It was here. It was in camp. They're moving out of the cities, we need every able body we got."
"Seems to me what you really need her is more guns." Rick responded, tilting his head.
"Right." Glenn stepped up. "The guns."
"What guns?" Willow questioned.
"Six shotguns, two high-powered rifles, over a dozen handguns. I cleaned out the cage back at the police station before I left." Rick answered, turning his words back to Shane. "I dropped the bag in Atlanta when I got swarmed. It's just sitting there on the street waiting to be picked up. 700 rounds, assorted."
Shane finally eased up at the thought of having more guns to protect camp.
"Got any bolt cutters?" Rick asked Dale and Jim who sat against the open front of the RV. Rick was able to bargain the bolt cutters with a gun for Dale and the radiator hose from the truck once they got back. Sudden honking from the truck made everyone jump, Willow looking back to see Daryl kicking the horn of it.
"Come on, let's go!"
Willow let Sienna fall into the care of Carol until she got back from the trip, kissing her little head lightly before heading to the truck. She felt like she could puke, leaving her daughter behind, but it would happen eventually.
Glenn sat behind the wheel and Rick in the passenger, leaving Daryl and Willow in the back of the truck. They sat awkwardly, Daryl muttering curses under his breath as they made their way toward the city.
"You take that thing everywhere?" Willow asked daryl, nodding her head toward the crossbow by his side.
He didn't answer, just a subtle nod as he picked at the skin around his fingers.
"I have an older brother too." She spoke softly, trying to loosen the tension between everyone. "His name's Ashton, but my father and I called him Ash." She smiled at the memories that popped into her head. "I found him a little bit ago, but got separated again back in Atlanta."
"And?" Daryl scoffed, obviously bored and not wanting to hear any of it.
"I'm still holding onto hope for him." She scooted her knees into her chest. "You should for your brother too."
He glared at her. "Ain't got no hope for nothin'."
-
They left the truck on some abandoned railroad tracks a few blocks out from the building Merle was left at, walking the rest of the way, but taking notice of where they had left the truck so they can return.
Willow pointed to an overpass ahead. "There. We can cut through the fence. Much faster that way." They followed her word, Glenn using the bolt cutters to cut through the fence.
"Merle or the guns first?" Rick asked the group.
"Merle! We ain't even havin' this conversation." Daryl muttered at the man.
"Merle's closest." Glenn jogged ahead. "The guns would mean doubling back. Merle first."
Soon enough, they were walking through the broken glass doors that once closed off the small retail store, the glass crunching beneath their boots. To their surprise, only a few walkers were left wandering around it. Rick held up a hand to them as he heard the shuffling of their feet. Willow held her knife out, but Daryl took lead.
"Damn, you are one ugly skank." His arrow whiffled through the air quickly, the walker dropping to the ground.
Another one had snuck up behind Daryl, clawing at his sleeveless shirt from behind. Willow being the closest, jabbed her knife into the top of the walkers head, the skull crunching beneath the blade. She ripped it back out, Daryl turning to her. She kicked herself for expecting a thank you.
"This way." Glenn announced, heading towards the back of the store and up the stairs. The group ran up the stairs, Glenn cutting the padlock and chains, Daryl kicking the door open yelling for his brother.
The four of them ran to the spot they knew Rick had cuffed Merle, but the only sign left of him was his hand which laid on the ground next to a hack saw and beneath a dangling hand cuff. Willow's stomach dropped as Daryl yelled.
"No!" His voice wavered as he paced around. "No!"
-
The group followed a trail of blood, leading to another door on the roof.
"Merle! You in here?" Daryl called out, Willow cringing at the echo his voice made.
"Quiet down!" Rick sneered at him.
The trail continued down the stairs and into a room cluttered with stray papers and desks along with a few walkers that were taken down.
"Had enough in him to take out these two sumbitches." Daryl pointed to the two decayed bodies. "One handed."
Willow trekked around the room, picking up a wrench that laid next to the head of one of the dead, remembering that Dale complained earlier to Rick about his missing tools.
"Toughest asshole I ever met, my brother. Feed him a hammer, he'd crap out nails."
"Any many can pass out from blood loss, no matter how tough he is." Rick continued on, following the trail.
They entered another room in which Daryl called out for his brother again.
"We're not alone here, remember?" Rick hissed in Daryl's ear.
"Screw that. He could be bleeding out, you said so yourself."
They heard a sizzling that came from deeper into the room, and as they continued, it revealed a kitchen, and the sizzling came from a stove burner that had been left on with a bloody belt draped across it.
"Must've used it as a tourniquet." Willow said, shutting off the stove.
Rick picked up a flat metal tool that sat beside the stove.
"What's that burnt stuff?" Glenn asked in disgust.
"Skin." Rick examined it. "He cauterized the stump."
"Told you he's tough. Nobody can kill Merle but Merle."
"Guys." Willow stood by the window now, the glass shattered around it.
The three men trailed over.
"He left the building?" Glenn examined the window sill that had drops of blood on it. "Why the hell would he do that?"
"Why wouldn't he? He's out there all alone as far as he knows, doing what he's gotta do. Survivin'." Daryl began to climb out the window, only to be tugged back in by Willow and Rick.
"He can't get far with that injury, Daryl." Willow sighed. "We can check a few blocks around here." She glanced over at Rick to see if he'd agree, and he did.
"Only if we keep a level head." He added.
"We need to get those guns first." She saw a few walkers shuffling down the street outside. "God knows how many walkers we'll be facing out there."
-
"No way." Willow shook her head, Rick agreeing. "You're not going out there alone."
Glenn peered up from the drawing of the streets he made with an expo marker on the tile. "If I'm alone, I can move fast."
The group still wasn't convinced.
"Look," He directed them back to the drawing. "Daryl and I will hit up this alley, the one we found Willow in."
Daryl glanced over at Willow who stood above them, arms crossed watching Glenn explain things.
"While Daryl waits here in the alley, I run up the street, grab the bag." He finishes.
"You got us elsewhere?" Rick asked.
Returning to his drawing, Glenn placed an eraser between two lines. "You and Willow will be in this alley here."
"Two blocks away?" Willow asked, confused.
"I may not be able to come back the same way. Walkers might cut me off. If that happens, I won't go back to Daryl. I'll go forward instead, all the way to that alley where you guys are. Whichever direction I go, I got you in both places to cover me. Afterwards, we'll all meet back here."
Looking back at Glenn, Daryl asked. "Hey, kid. What'd you do before all this?"
"Delivered pizzas. Why?"
They all looked at each other, nodding, as it made sense.
-
Rick and Willow cleared the alley while they waited for Glenn. Only a few stray walkers stumbled around, easily taken out by Willow's knife.
"So, you were a sheriff?" Willow asked Rick as she wiped the blood off her knife.
"Yeah." He nodded, eyeing around the corner of the alley. "You?"
"Wasn't much before this. Just living day by day." She leaned against the opposite wall of the alley across from Rick. "You're a good leader."
He glanced at her in confusion.
"You may not see it, but I know the others do. I can tell already you're gonna be the glue of this group." She smiled, but she could tell he didn't seem to fully appreciate what she was saying. "I know I'd be happy to have you lead the way. Lord knows my daughter needs it."
"When I woke up in that hospital," he began, "alone and confused. I immediately went home looking for them, Lori and Carl. I thought for sure they were gone. Don't know if I had considered them dead or if they had just left, but when I saw them in that camp." He shook his head. "That was it. I knew I needed to be there with them. Keep them safe."
"You can and you will." She said. "If they got you, they will be just fine."
"I'm selfish." He grunted out. "The moment I had them again, I knew I wouldn't give a damn about anything else. That's no leader."
"Well you're here now, aren't you?" She questioned him. "Looking for a Dixon out of all people." She laughed lightly. "That doesn't sound selfish to me."
They looked at each other, and she could tell she was getting through to him, but their conversation was cut short. Glenn came barreling into the alley with the bag in his hand, yelling.
"We've gotta move!"
Without hesitation, Rick and Willow did exactly that, groans and moans getting louder behind them. She regretted looking back for a split second to see nearly hundreds of walkers chasing them.
The alleys they ran down were slim and cluttered with debris and junk. It was a surprise to them all that none of them had tripped. They stood outside of the building they agreed to meet up at, but Daryl was yet to come.
"We've gotta go, now!" Rick sneered, just barely audible over the walkers that weren't too far behind them.
"Daryl isn't here yet, we've gotta wait." Willow spun around, looking in every direction for him.
"Willow, come on." Glenn tugged at her arm but she stayed put.
"We already left one Dixon brother out here, we aren't leaving another."
Rick and Glenn shared looks with each other, conveying they both knew this was damn near suicide, but they stood with her.
"We've got the guns now, we can handle this until Daryl gets here." She said, grabbing at the sheriff bag Glenn held. They rummaged through it, grabbing a hold of whatever they could find first.
Willow held tightly to a pistol, checking the magazine to see that it was already full, the men doing the same.
"Head count, Glenn?" She looked over at him, noticing his slightly anxious face.
"Maybe 80 to 100? I'm not sure."
"Gotta be less now, I know we lost a good bit of them taking all those turns back there." She reassured him.
The first walker came around a corner of one of the alleys they just left. Glenn aimed his rifle at it, but Willow pushed it down.
"Not yet." She walked up to the walker, kicking it backwards onto the ground before plunging her knife into its head and removing it. "Lets hold off on firing until absolutely necessary. We don't need to alert more of them right now."
A few more walkers had trailed towards them from different directions, Glenn and Rick taking on a few while Willow did the same.
"There's more coming, Willow." Glenn called over his shoulder. "We really need to think about-"
"About what?" Daryl grunted, jogging out of the alley, firing an arrow at the walker Glenn was struggling with.
A slight smile played at Willow's lips.
"Alright, let's go." Rick tossed the bag over his shoulder, leading the way back to the truck.
It didn't take long for them to reach the tracks they left the truck at, but there was no truck where they had left it.
"Where the hell's our van?" Daryl swung his crossbow over his shoulder, ducking through the fence they cut earlier.
"We left it right there, who would take it?" Glenn started to panic.
Willow looked at Rick, knowing they both thought the same thing.
"Merle."
-
The sky was dark and their feet ached from the long hike back up the mountain to camp. The moon barely lit the road enough to keep them from stumbling and telling where exactly to go.
But the gunshots that went off told them exactly how close they were.
Rick and Willow took off into a sprint as did the rest of them shortly after, kicking up rocks and dirt beneath their feet.
As they got closer and closer, screams and more gunshots were heard louder. Willow's legs burned from how fast she had been running, swearing to god if anything had happened to Sienna.
Willow was the first to break through the trees, immediately cocking her pistol and shooting multiple walkers in the head, their bodies cluttering around the camp ground. Rick, Glenn and Daryl finally showed, firing off rounds from their shotguns. With every walker that dropped, more seemed to come.
"Baby! Carl!" Rick stepped over all of the bodies, running towards his family. Daryl smashed the head in of the final walker with the butt of his shotgun.
Willow's eyes darted around frantically looking for Carol.
"Where's my daughter?" She yelled, rushing throughout the camp looking for her. "Carol!"
"This way!" Jacqui yelled out to Willow, swinging the RV door open for her.
She ran inside, pushing through the others that gathered in as well, finding Carol and Sophia.
"Sienna? Where is she?" Her eyes welded with tears.
Carol stepped aside, revealing Sienna bundled up, laying on the small couch in the back of the RV.
"Oh my god." Willow sobbed, picking her daughter up and holding her close. Sienna's little bug eyes looked up at her and also started crying. She held her tight.
"Thank god. Thank god." She whimpered, tears streaming down her face.
Carol stroked Willow's back before returning to her own daughter, crying about her deceased husband and Sophia's father.
Willow sank into the dirty couch, rocking back and forth with Sienna in her arms, trying to calm the both of them down.
At this moment, she didn't care about anything or anyone else.
Maybe she was the selfish one.

for the fic writer asks: 9, 17, and 19 :-)
9. Do you write every day? If you wrote today, share a sentence of what you’ve written!
Mmm not every single day but I have written 37 out of the past 38 days, between 200 and 11,000 words each day! Got a streak going (almost... shouldn't have skipped that day). Sentence from today:
Grasping a handful of Floo powder, he stepped through to the Zabini home, where he was immediately greeted with the pungent stench of marijuana.
17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?
They don't have diners in the UK! Also the exhibits of the Atlanta aquarium, and the mechanics of hopping trains, and the fact that gamma ray bursts are the most energetic processes in the universe, though I didn't end up using that last fact.
19. Give us a small teaser from one of your WIPs.
Ummmmm I'm gonna give you a long teaser cause I can't fuckin help myself, I've been working on this fic for SO LONG and wishing I could share it. Here's part of a scene from what's currently Chapter 5 of Fuel to Fire under the cut.

Sirius grabbed onto the front of Remus’s robes with an intensity that frightened her, eyes blazing. “You found the traitor?” he demanded. “Did you kill him?”
“I wouldn’t let them,” Mary said. “We need him to prove that you’re innocent.”
Turning to look at her, Sirius asked, “Them?”
Oops.
“Severus helped me,” Remus admitted.
“Severus Snape?” Sirius demanded. “What the fuck, Remus!” He still hadn’t let go of his robes, and Mary was getting a little nervous.
Deciding that, since scolding Snape had worked surprisingly well, she’d try it on Sirius too, Mary folded her arms and told him sternly, “Snape is my friend. Well, I’m a bit mad at him right now, because he didn’t tell me you were innocent at first. But he’s going to help us clear your name, so you can’t fight with him. Okay?” He seemed a little mentally addled, maybe because of being a dog for so long, so she was trying to keep things simple.
Sirius stared at her for a moment before turning back to Remus incredulously. “Snivellus is the Fawn’s friend?” he repeated. “Remus, what? How the fuck did this happen? What is she talking about?” Then something seemed to dawn on him, because he turned back to stare at Mary, betrayal in his eyes. “Is he here? I thought I smelled someone else, but I forgot, in all the…” He broke off, clearly unsure how to sum up ‘Mary and Remus petting him and calling him a good boy and convincing him to turn back to human.’
At that point, of course, Snape decided to make things even more difficult and step out from behind a tree, a rather obnoxious smirk on his face. Because he couldn’t just be nice, no, he had to revert to acting like a damn teenager at the worst possible moment. “Black,” he drawled.
Sirius was on his feet in an instant, advancing on Snape, and Mary quickly rushed to put herself between them, wondering where the fuck Sirius had gotten a wand from. And now Snape had his out, too. She stood with her back to Snape, her hands extended in Sirius’s direction, trying to stop him. “I told you, Snape is my friend!” she exclaimed, exasperated. “And I’m… I’m going to be very cross with you if you hurt him after he helped me find you!”
Looking a little uncertain, Sirius at least hesitated, and Mary, wanting to press her advantage, said the first thing that popped into her head: “Don’t be a bad dog!”
And for a moment, Sirius actually looked abashed, giving her what could only be termed ‘puppy dog eyes.’ Behind him, Remus burst out laughing, and even Snape snorted over her shoulder. “Yes, Black,” he taunted. “Don’t be a ‘bad dog.’”
Mary rounded on him at that. “Theíos!” she hissed, hands on her hips, not even realizing she’d reverted back to their old form of address. “You promised to be nice!”
“I haven’t hexed him yet,” Snape pointed out, sounding rather like he was sulking. He sniffed slightly and leaned backwards, away from Mary. “You reek of dog.”
(Behind her, she heard Sirius demanding, “Did she just call Snivellus her uncle? Remy, what is going on?” His voice was genuinely distraught, like the very foundations of the universe were unraveling beneath him.)
“That’s enough, children!” Remus snapped in the exact tone of voice he used when her class was acting up. “Sirius, Severus is Mary’s Head of House. He looks after her, and he helped me recapture Pettigrew.Yes, it’s strange, I thought so too at first, but he’s nice enough to her.” He stressed the final two words, making it clear the statement did not apply to anyone else. “Severus, if you cannot stop actively antagonizing Sirius, kindly go back to the Castle and leave us to talk. We have a lot to discuss, and we are not going to get anywhere with the two of you at each other’s throats.”
Both men turned to glare at him—Sirius out of betrayal that Remus would defend Snape, and Snape out of indignation that Remus would dare tell him off. Mary gave Remus a grateful smile, glad that she wasn’t the only one with any sense in this situation.
“I will not go back to the Castle without Miss Potter,” Snape argued. “Black may not have killed Pettigrew or those muggles, but he is clearly volatile. I will not leave her alone with him.” Completely ignoring the fact that Remus would be there too, of course.
“I am not volatile, I just hate you,” Sirius retorted, and Mary rolled her eyes.
“If it’ll stop you guys from killing each other, fine. I’ll go back to the castle with Professor Snape, and you,” she addressed Remus, “can find me once you’ve filled Sirius in on everything.”
Remus seemed fine with that plan, but Sirius was not. “Hang on!” he protested, grabbing Remus’s sleeve. “You’re not just going to let him take the Fawn somewhere alone, are you?”
“Merlin and Morgan!” she swore, fed up with his attitude and with being talked about like she wasn’t even there. “My name is Mary, and I don’t need Remus’s permission to follow my Head of House back to the Castle. Besides, if Snape wanted to kill me, he’s already had plenty of opportunities. I’m alone with him in his private lab basically all the time.” Sirius only looked more outraged at that, so she simply turned on her heel, giving Snape an unimpressed glare. “If you’re quite finished being rude to my godfather, you may escort me back.”
Snape huffed at her audacity, and possibly at the fact that she was clearly imitating him in her haughtiness, but he did so, placing a rather possessive hand on her shoulder and pushing her quickly along, which only sparked another outraged noise from Sirius behind her back. Anyway, he retracted his hand soon enough, wiping it on his robes and complaining, “You are absolutely covered in slobber. Honestly.”
“Yeah, I guess Sirius really likes to lick,” she agreed, and he gave her a look of such utter disgust that she had to laugh.
“That is perhaps the single most repulsive thing you could have said.”

Your post made me remember a long forgotten memory from my childhood where I was at a zoo and saw this big ass snake.
Now, I’m not sure if it was an exaggeration due to how small I was, or if it was even real in the first place (could’ve been a dream for all I know). But after seeing how big that snake is, I’m starting to wonder if it was actually real (albeit probably not as big as kid me thought it was, but still pretty big). Just wanted to thank you for awakening this long lost memory from my brain.
from what i'm aware, the largest snake ever held in captivity was a reticulated python around 25.6 feet long (not much shorter than the recently discovered northern green!), meaning it's entirely possible you sure did see a very large snake in a zoo. the largest green anaconda kept in captivity was around 20 feet, which is how long a normal reticulated python gets
these two species are both kept in a fair number of zoos (off the top of my head, san diego has an anaconda and atlanta has a retic)
i've seen some claims there was also a 32 foot retic measured at some point but i can't find any reliable sources on that, just pop listicles (which cannot be trusted in the field of cool reptile facts) so i'm gonna call it probably bullshit (update i found sources, however i'm. still calling bullshit, explanation on my thoughts in the tags but the tldr is i don't trust big fish stories from 111 years ago (update update yeah this claim literally has no basis other than the guinness world records organization claiming it, they've been known to measure snakes as significantly larger than they are, i think it's safe to just entirely throw out this specimens reported size))
feel free to google either species to see if it rings a bell for your mystery childhood snake

Aqua Teen Hunger Force MC Pee Pants Retrospective (Comissioned by WeirdKev27)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy people. So this one's a bit of a breather after some very intensive exausting reviews, some major schedule slippage and before even more intensive reviews. Today we're looking at Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Having gleefully covered Sealab 2021, Mission Hill, and having a whole Venture Bros retrospective on this blog (That I assure you IS coming back, my schedule is just like living in a living nightmare sometimes), and planning to cover home movies at some point after I realize I hadn't because it's purespun gold, observe…
youtube
It's probably not a suprise to Kev who comissoined this nor anyone reading whose been with me a while that I fucking love Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It fit the mold for the other williams street shows at the time like Space Ghost COast to Coast (also another one to cover), Brak Show, or Sealab itself: dialouge heavy but entirely bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-anas to compensate for a budget of a paper cup. It's also the longest lived of them by far, going on for most of Adult Swim's lifespan till being abubtly cancled and even THEN i'ts recently came back with a series of web shorts and the first DTV movie from Warner's new adult swim based intitative.
Aqua Teen will never be canceled, Aqua Teen Won't be Dismantled, Aqua Teen Gonna Be Together, Aqua Teen Gonna Be forever! And honestly it's easy to see why it's lasted this long as given the very simple yet inherently weird nature of aqua teen, three fast food mascots with super powers living in new jersey and having weird shit happen to them and their perverted asshole neighbor carl, means you can do just about anything with it from have Shake cause nuclear armageddon to reboot a flintstones pastiche, to the gang unearthing an evil sandwitch, to evangelical fruits showing up in thier house and one going on an alchoholic spiral, to carl getting himself shoved up a trolls ass as part of a metal band's performance, it can be anything. And while the later seasons are a bit weaker, I do think they still have their gems ala the simpsons.
So I was more than happy when asked to chronicle the rise and explosion and rise and slaughterhouse and rise and vamppiric explosion and rise and rise and squashing and rise and swatting and rise and elder fraud of mc pee pants aka sir loin aka little brittle.
MC Pee Pants came about due to Willams Street at the time making good use of comedian and rap god, MC Chris, a nerdy as fuck rapper with bars for days who I REALLY need to listen more of. When doing Improv one night osme of the williams street execs saw Chris, and asked him to come to atlanta nad while hesitant at first, the part of Hesh for sealab, who I assure you will get his own specail one of these days, maybe a heshtober fest, appealed to him and soon Hesh wanted sex and Adult Swim wanted more of him. So i'ts not a huge shock he popped up on adult swim's latest show Aqua Teen Hunger force and would make yearly apperances before vanishing entirely. Why he fell out with the company.. no one knows. He gladly came back for the 100th episode so there appears to be no real bad blood.. he might of just moved out of altanta. Whatever the case while Hesh made MC Chris' voice acting career, MC Pee Pants is easily just as memorable. As for who he is.. well tha'ts best left under the cut as what he is.. is a lot.
Tumblr media
MC Pee Pants MC Pee Pants first debuted in season 1 and our journey begins with him as all his episodes do: with Meatwad blasting his jam box to high heaven and pissing everyone else off. What makes this one special besides being the first is Master Shake is trying to jam a new romantic ballad on the guitar. It can't be undestated how hilarious Dana Synder is and i'm pleased as punch he's still getting work to this day, including a starring role in Ghost and Molly McGee and voicing half of Jellystone.
Naturally Shake's response is to smash his guitar in rage and plan to ram the neck down meatwad's….. uhhhhhhh….. huh. You know I don't think ramming something into meatwad would actually kill him. Maybe HURT him, but i'm not sure ANYTHING can actually kill meatwad short of destroying every last molocule. As long as there's one cell left it'll still be sapient.
Shake CAN still beat the piss out of his hapless roomate though so Frylock, always anti child beating, tries to talk Meatwad down instead. Every attempt is objectively funny. The first is my faviorite: Frylock tries to get Meatwad to listen to classical music. He has such high school band teacher energy here trying to convince Metawad that these were the "real gangsters" while Meatwad looks on in abject horror and just switches back to MC Pee Pants after. Frylock still tries to be patient despite Meatwad having done this for days and does the obvious: has Meatwad use earphones. And I love his happy tone as he says "So master shake won't want to kill you with a guitar neck". I also like the Meatwad hearing loss gag after. Good sound mixing there. Eventually Frylock just tell shim to fuck off with it or he'll let shake beat him which is'nt great parenting but he tried good parenting. Now it's "don't make me let your roommate/brother/tormentor beat you".
Meatwad then tries to get him some candy as the dope new drop from mc pee pants h'es been blasting, I want candy tell shim to. We get a great him as elvis gag (Shake's "Are you the fat elvis" is comic gold as is his casual attempted murder), and ends up getting his fix form carl who true to form has a bunch of easter bunnies he got from the dumpster they just have to wipe off which would be gross but we don't see them actually EAT the things nor what's on them, so it works, especially with Carl's later ask of "Wipe me off another rabbit"
They end up doing this long into the night, and washing Carl's car for some reason. Probably cocaine. I wouldn't put it past carl to have put some on the bunnies and told meatwad they were sugar. Or done so by mistake. It's carl, he's either going to be sad, sleazy, deeply incomptient or all of the above. How is a crapshoot.
Frylock has concerns. Not about the cocaine, he has a snow mountain in his closet, no he's worried about the lyrics which talk about using the hyper active energy of those who eat the candy to power a drill straight to hell to unleash demons to help mc pee pants with a diet pill pyramid scheme.
Tumblr media
So with the address given in the song, everyone heads to 612 wharf avenue. Which is ana ctual place in new jersey. It's even near Kevin Smith's store.
Tumblr media
Turns out that's EXACTLY Mc Pee Pants scheme and instead of the child on the cover, he's a grown man whose also a giant spider in a diaper and shower cap who talks about how he's insane. Chris unsurprisingly is great in the rolll as MC Pee Pants really makes little sense with his plan, an dis only doing it because he can't get a job.
The resolution is one of the series best: the aqua teens set mc pee pants up for a job interview…. and then blow up an abandoned building iwth him inside. It's just so hilariously cruel and there's no real reason for it. They could just.. take meatwad and leave. He can't really do anything to them. I mean he did domestically abuse dr. weird though.. so fair enough.
MC Pee Pants is a solid episode.. and I got paid TO WRITE THAT. I love my life. It's got plenty of great jokes, chris is terrfiic and I want candy will get stuck in your head guaranteed
Tumblr media
Super Sirloin While the first ep was decent, Sir Loin is even better. With this one Frylock hasn't quite caught onto the formula despite Meatwad once again blasting a song at all hours.. in this case instead of a sugar high he can't sleep because he's worried about the starving children.. and how he goes about helping "the shorties" is also hilarious, grabbing every bit of food and stuffing it into a garbage bag. I also like the runner about Master Shake somehow affording steak and eggs and Duck Alaronge, as well as despite Frylock saying it perfectly, him bitching about Frylock butchering the prounciation. I forget how much subtle humor is dotted aroudn the weirder shit. Carl also spits in a bag and Dr Weird grafts a dear antler to his groin to fit in with the heard so it hasn't gotten too subtle. "Sigh" I really miss Dr. Weird. And C. Martin Croaker.
I also like the runner with meatwad eating sand, which starts with Shake just .. getting him to eat it on a regular basis.
Tumblr media
Despite Frylock being worried about it even though Meatwad is clearly a highlander, and later escalates to meatwad expecting everyone else to for the shorties and Shake trying it with ketchup and deciding this sucks and they need to go see sir loin. Naturally Mc Pee Pants, now sir loin is the best part of the episode. This time he's a cow whose renting patio furniture and is amassing flies to melt down a bank. Once again I got paid to watch a man explain all this and then write about it.
Tumblr media
My faviorite bits are Mc Pee Pants slowing down explaning things because he thinks frylock is dumb, chris really nails the condesnion and the bizzare ness of him talking about the farmer asking "gimme the milk, gimmie the milk" and frylock's deadpan "There isn't a farmer is there. " He's way too used to the nonsense that is his existance at this point. They naturally use a slaughterhouse this time which tops the previous finale as last time it was at least plausable that building was a buisness… I mean not very but he's a giant spider in a diaper man. It dosen't tak emuch. This time it's very transparently a slaughterhouse and the SECOND time they've casually murdered him and will not be the last.
Sir Loin is another great episode, taking the same basic premise but finding even better jokes for it. The result's a classic.
Tumblr media
Little Brittle
So we're onto the final focus episode for MC, and honestly when I was a teen and until this rewatch I hated this one, feeling it was too slow paced and not nearly as entertaning as the first two. On rewatch I expected to still hate it and dreaded getting to this one
Tumblr media
Little Brittle.. is the BEST of the trilogy, and after wondering why MC hadn't come back for more than a cameo till Aquadonk Sidepieces, this gave me the answer: there was no where to go from here. THey already took the formula as far as they could. While other recurrers could be crammed in wherever, MC's episodes relied on him doing the same brainwashing raps and reveal of some stupid plan every time and with this one tearing that formula up they likely just.. couldn't think of a new spin on it. Brittle has the same inciting incident: Meatwad's playing MC's latest rap on loop, only after two times Frylock catches on instantly. Though instead of 612 Wharf Avenue he's at a decaying old folks home, presumibly next to elvis and jfk.
Two things really make this one pop: the subversion of things, which is not easy to pull off: there's a fine line between playing with a formula nad audience expectations and getting good laughs or drama out of it and pulling a swerve bro. It's what seperates the rian johnstons from the vince russos and they pull it off here. Instead of a zany plan MC instead genuinely seems to be a sad old man who just happens to also have a diaper, shower cap and yellow eyes , who misses his grand kids and is dealing with how horribly we treat the elderly. And that's the other sauce: the episode is suprisingly well done satire about how we treat our elderly: the place MC is stuck is GENUINELY awful, wether he's pulling a scheme or not, and Frylock mostly goes along to feel good about himself then abandons Meatwad there with a strange old man because "someone has to" and he dosen't want to be around the elderly because they smell. Shake and Frylock represent the most common ways society treats the old: Shake is just an asshole and is fine with leaving them to die while Frylock is only fine with actually treating elderly people like human beings as long as it's comfortable. Meatwad is only sympathetic because he not only came iwth good intentions but is basically a child unless the episode says he isn't. Little Brittle is a lot and hte fact he powers thorugh and genuinely seems to befriend him again is great.
As is the reveal that of course this is another stupid scheme, this time to have a vampire bite him to become immortal. The reveal he ONLY released come visit me yo in Transylvania is gold, only topped by Meatwad revealing "the import fees were a bitch". What caps it off though and likely sealed this trilogy off.. is that it ACTUALLY WORKS FOR ONCE. No really, Dracula shows up, bites him, and MC actually gets to be a vampire. He dies again, but only because he goes out into the sun and explodes. The ending's also something that grew on me: originally I felt it was random as hell, and while the explosions are, now I can see the setup: after two episodes of a stupid scheme tha tmakes no sense he has one actually work.. and then dies anyway because of the stupidity that got him killed the last two times. Truly brilliant. Shake is also low key great. Carl.. I don't think is in this one much. Dr. Weird is sadly absent altogether as we'd gotten to spacekataz at this point, which was fine and I get stopping the weird bits once they ran out of ideas but god do I miss them.
Tumblr media
Side Pieces
So while they only make the three starring episodes, MC still got to show up a few more times.
First was The Last One that united all the villians legion of doom style… where they procede to get nothing done but adopting a highway by clickclickclickclickclick. MC Pitches a scheme and then dies. It's still nice to have him for this one. Then we have the movie, which like the last one I didn't watch in full, but thankfully youtube had his scene which has Meatwad calling on him to make a rap, and MC coming back as a fly, eating a dog turd and giving us a great rap to stop the insano flex.. before shake kills him because he's needlessly cruel and self destructive. It's a great scene honestly especially the oepning where he has choclate unicorn backup dancers because it's awesome. Chris himself also returned for the 100th episode though rather than play mc he simply did a rap.
youtube
Given they played this in all the commericals, it's imbeded deep in my brain… and was also the best part of the episode by a wide margin. So finally we have last year's aquadonk side pieces episode. ADSP was a series of web shorts adult swim did focusing on thet villians, with Carl and the others still showing up. It was great, with this one being tied with the dumber dolls sequel for my faviorite of the batch. It's MC teaching people who to rap the elderly out of their homes. BUT HOW IS THIS LEGAL MC
Tumblr media
Since it's so short I recommend watching it yourself bellow
youtube
It is truly fantastic and pure comedy gold.. and also strangely heartwarming? Like this is the happiest ending he's gotten… being adopted by an old man whose house he planned to steal with his original body again. So if you have HBO about to be Just Max, I highly recommend these episodes. MC Chris is the best and I felt it was only right to play us out with one of his tracks and since it is may the 4th.. hit it youtube! Thanks for reading.

weirder asks for you to answer: 1, 21, 31, 33, and 42! I'm just about to start answering the asks you sent in last night!
I'm gonna do my best formatting on mobile since I'm at work lol
1. Who is/are your comfort character(s)? Oh man. I haven't thought about this in a long time because I have more of a comfort person (aside from my husband) and a comfort k-pop group. But I'll say Kurama from YYH, Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Aladdin and Genie from Aladdin, Caspian from Prince Caspian, Tadashi from Big Hero 6, Elmo from Sesame Street... and that's all I can think of currently. I'm sure there are a ton more.
21. Something you've kept since childhood? I have this stuffed Elmo I've had since I was really young. The pupils are almost rubbed off and his fur is no longer soft. Stuffing is mishaped and not even anymore, but I still have him!
31. What type of music keeps you grounded? The obsessive urge to say Stray Kids rn 😂 but Lofi is really the type I think. It just helps me focus and stay in the moment. It makes me feel comfortable. You know those pictures that look oddly familiar to you even though you've never been and you feel a lot of comfort you dont understand? That's what Lofi does to me.
33. The last adventure you've been on? Well, I went to Atlanta with a friend of mine to go to kpop stores and eat Korean food. I think that was probably the last adventure I went on. The last vacation adventure was to St. Louis in July. 🥹 It was so hot, but I got to show most of my in-laws where I grew up. Plus the zoo was so fun.
42. An app you use a lot besides this one (I know that isnt word for word but 🤷🏻‍♀️)? I use Instagram the most I think. I deleted Facebook and Twitter off my phone (I do check Twitter for pics often but I hate the way the app icon looks now). I am on Reddit quite a bit too, but it's mostly Tumblr and Reddit... oh and TikTok. I have timers on Instagram and TikTok though.
Thanks for sending these in! 🥰🥰🥰

Surprise, Spider! | Tom Holland x Reader
Summary: You surprise Tom at a convention and dress up as Black Cat
Pairing: Tom Holland x Reader
Word count: 1.1k
Note: This is my first time writing for Tom
** this is the pose mentioned below
Tumblr media
-
Tom had gotten on a plane and left for the convention last night. He would only be gone for three days, but after being out of the country for seven months to film a movie, and returning home completely exhausted and jet-lagged, he wanted nothing more than to sleep in his own bed.
Alas, he had obligations he could not back out of.
''I wish you would've come with me to Atlanta,'' Tom said over the phone, laying in his massive hotel bed, running on a few hours of sleep - thanks jet-lag. ''It's so lonely here...''
''Aren't some of the Avengers cast going to be there? I thought you were promoting Endgame.''
You heard shifting as Tom moved in the sheets, followed by a sad sigh. ''Yeah, but it's not the same as having my girlfriend here. Robert and Chris aren't going to take pictures of me when I have fanboy moments or dressing up as DC superheroes and hand out signed Spiderman Funko Pops to fans.''
''Oh my god, I remember that! A lot of people thought we were scammers because of our Batman and Poison Ivy costumes.''
''And your skin was stained green for five days,'' Tom recalled with a laugh. ''I think I still got a picture in my phone.''
You groaned. ''Ugh, don't remind me.''
This anecdote reminded you of how much you loved going to conventions. You loved seeing the younger fans and taking pictures for them with Tom, assisting to panels and meeting your favorite actors. Going undercover was probably your favorite, though. Unless you count that one time you met Johnny Depp. The picture was framed in your apartment.
''I'll make it next time,'' you promised.
You stayed on the phone for a few more minutes, casually talking about everything and nothing, until Tom had to go get ready for the convention.
And so did you.
After you finished your makeup, you unzipped the black protective dust-bag and grinned wickedly, seeing the mix of black fabric and white fur. You had been planning and anticipating this for weeks. The ticket had been expensive and you felt bad for taking a fan’s spot, but Tom’s reaction will be worth it. His heart was going to burst when he'll see you at the photo op.
Nailing down the right pieces for your cosplay had been harder than you thought. Especially the suit. You had gone for a comic accurate suit, just not as low-cut in the cleavage area, not fancying being harassed by men during the whole convention. Your tight suit will already get them drooling, you didn't want to be the main character of some weirdo's next sex dream. Yikes.
You took the suit off of the hanger and slipped into it, cursing the tight fabric as you struggled to pull it on. If you hadn't had it tailored to your body, you would have doubts about it fitting you, but it was just a matter of patience and technique.
Lastly, you put on your boots, wig and mask, and left the hotel.
You had been at the convention for barely half an hour and you had already drawn some attention. How could you not in your skin-tight catsuit with white fur and matching boots?
A lot of people had stopped you and asked to take pictures of and with you, which you had gladly accepted. It was a part of cosplay-ing. It’s like a reward, in a way.
After posing with over fifty Spidermans, being cat-called a hundreds times and being touched inappropriately by a Venom, it was time to go line up for Tom's photo op.
Your boots were killing your feet as you stood in line, almost making you regret wearing them. That’s what you get for thinking about being comic accurate and not practicality. Backing down was tempting, but what’s a couple of blisters when you know you’re gonna make Tom really happy?
Before you, the line was going fast, all fans getting their fifteen seconds with Tom. The group of girls behind you were getting excited, seeing the curtain getting closer, and you began feeling nervous.
Hopefully someone will take a video of his reaction. It would make such good memories to look back on.
A man opened the curtain for you, telling you to go in, and you walked to the other side, holding back your excited grin. It was difficult to keep your straight face and not sell yourself.
''Hello, darling. How are you?'' Tom asked you sweetly, oblivious it was you under the Black Cat costume. ''Nice costume!'' He went for a hug and you bit your cheeks, hugging him back.
You thanked him briefly and avoided eye contact.
''How do you want to pose?''
You did a typical prom pose where Tom was behind you, his arms around your middle as you reached over your shoulder to the back of his head. His face was very close to yours. So close that if you turned your head, you’d be able to kiss him. You were surprised he had agreed to the pose, feeling a bit too intimate for a fan picture.
The countdown for the picture had started and, just before the flash went off, you said: ''You mess with the cat, you get the claws.''
Tom’s face changed as the flash went off and the picture was taken. He knows.
You turned around in his arms, looking up into his eyes, which were staring back at yours. He reached out and took your black mask off, revealing your identity. His jaw went slack, speechless, and you smiled up at him.
''Surprise, Spider,'' you said in a sultry voice.
''What the fu-''
You wound your arms around Tom’s neck and security came over, about to take you away, but Tom snapped out of his shock and was quick to tell him it was alright, that you were his girlfriend and not a fan.
His arms wrapped around you, holding you tightly, and kissed you swiftly, his smile never leaving his lips. ''This is the best fucking surprise ever. I can't believe you're here.'' He kissed you again, not having enough.
''Eh, sorry to interrupt, Mr. Holland, but there’s a hundred fans still in line,'' one of the convention employees informed, clearing their throat.
Tom turned to them and nodded, releasing you. ''I gotta keep moving, darling,'' he said, disappointment lacing his voice. ''But, I’ll see you later. Maybe we could take pictures with my suit on later? I’m sure there’s a photograph somewhere that’ll do that for us.''
Your eyes brightened up at the idea. ''Yeah, that would be really cool. Except…you don't have your suit.''
Tom scoffed, looking smug. ''I do. Who do you think I am?''
You chuckled. Tom never missed an occasion to wear his Spiderman suit.
''We should do the spider-kiss pose,'' he suggested, getting really excited by the idea. ''I’ve been dying to do this scene in the movies, but they aren’t putting it in.''
''Whatever you want.''
His grin broadened, looking forward to that moment.

okay i'm gonna say something and i just know someone's gonna get mad at me or send me shit and say i'm not actually a fan, whatever, but i've been feeling some sort of way about this for awhile and it lowkey really pisses me off that not enough people i see are talking about it, so i'm going to bite the bullet and say it—
louis not wearing his mask when talking to and meeting fans, even when he's just walking around outside venues or when has popping out of his recording space to wave hello, is not okay and has not been okay and he's not been getting the call-outs he deserves.
i know he's got to be vaccinated and likely boostered already but seeing as how this whole tour was already put on hold for like, two years because of the pandemic that's still going around and still has people—including his fans, his band, tour crew, venue workers, everyone??—required to wear masks out in public and around other people, vaccinated or otherwise, and he just isn't wearing his mask around them when we see him (especially when security and his tour mates and crew are next to him wearing their masks??)....it's both super unsafe to him and other people, as well as super fucking disappointing to see.
like, it's been two years of this shit. we've been doing it. it's not new and it's not regional. i don't care when or if or even how vaccinated a person is—if you're out and about, keep your fucking mask on and keep your distance.
a huge reason as to why we have to keep on wearing our masks and dragging this shit out is because there are far too many people out there being selfish and not being safe, not getting vaccinated, or got vaccinated and decided 'well i can't get sick so no mask for me hehe' when you can still get covid after you've been vaccinated, and even if you're asymptomatic or don't get sick, you can still get other people sick!
not only that, but doing shots with fans—even if they literally just went to buy the shots at the in-venue bar and handed one to him seconds after getting them—isn't a good idea right now? yeah it's very fun to watch and under normal circumstances i'd love to do a shot with louis! but it's still a risk and he shouldn't be doing that right now?
(and please correct me if i'm wrong because i very well could be, but don't some of the venues for this tour still have slightly looser restrictions? i could totally have the wrong information but i was talking with some friends about it recently when one of them pointed it out, so as far as i know this is still a thing.)
we all talk about how vocal and comfortable he is in expressing his gratitude and love for both fans and the people he works with, as well as making sure everyone feels safe and is safe in his company, such as properly halting things tonight in atlanta when so many people were overheating in the pit, so: why is there so much radio silence when he's willingly being less than safe?
yes, you could argue he does wear his mask and we just don't see it in the photos we've taken of or with him, but that's still leaving room for risk. that's still not enough.
and to people who think i'm being unnecessarily hypercritical of him and this issue, the reason why i'm saying something, why i'm so vocally disappointed and frustrated about this, is because i really fucking care.
after having to wait so long for his first proper solo tour, i really don't want him to cancel dates or cut things short in any way because he's gotten sick, someone key to his performing has gotten sick, etc. like, i can't even imagine how heartbreaking it must've been to keep having to push off this huge career leap because of a pandemic...
so why is he risking a repeat of that at all?
my relationship to louis up to this point—since like, 2011—has been entirely parasocial, but i've always had a strong connection to him. i've cared about him for so long and when i care about someone—and i'm really not someone who really cares about or takes real interest in celebrities of any kind or caliber—even in that distanced parasocial way, i care.
so when one of the few people i actually like does or says something that i don't agree with or poses some sort of issue with my morals, interests, etc., i'm not going to pretend it wasn't said or didn't happen. i'm willingly giving that person my support and my time—why would i be quiet?? i want them to be better!
criticizing the actions or words of someone you care about when there's inherently an issue with their behavior does not mean you like them any less and i don't think enough people take that into account, and why so much behavior from a lot of people goes unchecked when it shouldn't.
and it's not just louis; just in regards to 1d, i've openly criticized every member of the group at some point in time! call-outs to be better are a love language of mine and i take them very seriously!
(like i've already come and keep coming for liam's neck about the NFT shit, and louis isn't catching a break from me either in that regard.)
really what i'm trying to say here is:
considering this whole tour was pushed back because of covid, it genuinely frustrates and disappoints me to have seen louis already being so carelessly maskless when meeting people and going out before tour, but so especially on tour when he's not just consistently traveling to different cities but different countries and is going to be doing so for a majority of the year.
to see someone i've genuinely liked and cared about for oven ten years, who has a deserved rep for being profoundly vocal in his love and gratitude, do something so careless yet so fucking easily fixable as wearing a mask, breaks my heart, because wearing a mask isn't something out of his power or his control. if his crew, band, openers, etc., can wear their masks when around him and when out around fans and other people, so can he. there is no excuses to be made here.
no amount of money and status can make you immune to a worldwide super-spreader virus that's not just made millions of people sick and even given many lasting health issues, but actually taken millions of lives.
he needs to be better in this regard, and we need to actively hold him, and anyone else acting similarly, accountable. it doesn't mean we're being hypercritical or that we secretly don't care, are being mean, etcetera—rather, we all need to be held to the same standard, to be safe.

no sleep
Tumblr media
pairing: singer!reader x tom holland || w/c: 1.6k
warnings: swearing and many many many suggestive jokes
summary: you’re on jimmy kimmel to talk about your music, but he has other plans
a/n: y’all i’ve literally always wanted to write singer!reader and this idea just came to me and i had to get it out because it’s so cute :,) i really hope ya like it
-
jimmy kimmel invited you onto his show to promote a single from your upcoming album. you stepped out of the spotlight for a while, so this is your first official appearance of the year.
“my first guest tonight...” there’s a cheer from the audience. you grin to yourself, waiting for jimmy to finish announcing you.
“you wanna say it for me?” he chuckles and stands your picture up on his desk. “my first guest tonight surprised fans this morning with her new single ‘no sleep.’ it’s currently number one in over seventy countries.” jimmy holds for applause, which you get a ton of. you cover your hot face with your hands.
“she’s here to talk to us about the song and her short hiatus. please welcome y/n y/l/n!”
the music plays while you walk onstage, followed by more cheers and clapping. you’re beaming as you wave to everyone. you give jimmy a quick hug and exchange hello’s over the noise.
you’ve been in the industry for a few years, but you’ll never get used to responses like this. all the love really warms your heart.
“thank you!” you giggle out, taking your seat on the couch. the audience yells some more when the music dies out. “thank you so much! oh my god,” you make a face at jimmy, who laughs and gestures to everyone. “they clearly hated the song,” he jokes to you. “i was gonna say,” you agree, smoothing your dress down.
you look out at the crowd with a pout. “no, seriously. you guys are so cute.” jimmy copies your pout, earning a playful eye roll from you.
you’ve been on the show a couple of times before, so you two are friendly. tom has also brought you to chill backstage with him when he was a guest. you would’ve brought him this time if he wasn’t away for filming.
“so, you took most of the year off from making music,” jimmy starts the actual conversation. “mhm, i did,” you hum and cross one of your legs over the other. “how was that? was it weird not being in the studio?” you scrunch your face up, then he adds another question. “what did you actually do with yourself?”
“i mean, music is obviously a big part of who i am. making it, loving it, all that stuff.” a small smile crosses your face. “so, yeah. it sort of felt like something was missing at first.” jimmy nods along, you shrugging one of your shoulders.
“at the same time, i really needed to take a minute and just breathe. come back with my shit more together. i think i have,” you let out a reflective sigh. “it didn’t have anything to do with your boyfriend? a mr. tom holland?” jimmy teases, you waving a hand at him. “no, don’t give him all the credit.”
your break genuinely was for yourself. no one needs to know that tom was also off, or that he spent all his free time with you. that was just a plus.
“are you sure? because, it seemed like you two were getting really cozy.” a picture from your instagram pops up on the screen. it’s of tom under a blanket. he’s reaching out for you with a lazy smile. you lean over on the couch so you’re off camera, another giggle escaping you.
jimmy flips to another picture. “that was exhibit A. here’s exhibit B.” the whole audience coos, jimmy raising his eyebrows at you. this one is a mirror selfie from tom’s instagram. your arms are slung around his neck from behind, and half your face is hidden. tom is doing his signature eye crinkling smile into the camera.
“aren’t they just adorable?” jimmy asks the audience, making them erupt in more cheers. you sit up again and clear your throat. seeing those is bittersweet for you. “he’s very cuddly. anyway, back to the music!” you do a small clap. little do you know, there’s much more to come.
“yes, yes. back to the music. talk to me about ‘no sleep.’” the song is one hundred percent about tom. you’re not sure you should say that, considering the... explicit content in it. you and tom did get very cozy over your break, as jimmy would say. it was the only time you weren’t relaxing.
“well,” you plaster on an overly happy smile. that earns more laughter from jimmy. “it’s about what you do in bed when you’re, um, not sleeping,” you explain. “and who do you do those things in bed with?” jimmy glances up at the screen again. “you’re choosing violence today, jimmy,” you say under your breath.
there’s a chuckle from backstage that sounds eerily similar to tom’s. it must have been a PA. all this talk about him is seriously fucking with your head.
“well, everyone in my life inspires my work in some way. they’re such angels,” you dodge the question, thinking you’re clever about it. jimmy won’t let you get off that easy. “friends? family?” he asks you. “yeah, everyone,” you exhale in relief. jimmy widens his eyes at you. “so, that means ‘no sleep’ is about your mom?”
your mouth falls open. he’s really going to make you spill the details of your sex life.
“what the fuck, no!” you squeal, looking out into the audience for help. they join in your laughter. “it’s about tom,” you finally confirm so jimmy doesn’t suggest anything else. “it’s about tom, my god. next topic.” you’re smiling despite yourself.
“why? don’t you wanna tell us more about your lover?” jimmy glances off to the side. what is going on back there? you sit up straighter in your spot. “no, this is my interview!” you’re half joking, half serious.
although you and tom aren’t private at all, you’ve never talked about him this much. it’s overwhelming. besides that, this is making you miss him a lot.
“that’s too bad. we thought... we thought you might like to share it,” jimmy is already grinning about whatever he has planned. this isn’t supposed to be part of your segment. “huh? i’m literally so lost.” you furrow your eyebrows at him, lowering your voice. “we didn’t talk about this.”
he pats the arm of your couch. “they say there’s no time like the present. ladies and gentlemen, tom holland!”
on cue, tom runs out from backstage. the audience practically roars with how loud they are. people even jump out of their seats. you clasp a hand over your mouth in pure shock. this feels like a prank, like jimmy is about to say sike. then, tom comes up to the couch. you almost fall over, jimmy proudly watching on.
tom grins so wide it takes up his whole face. “happy release day,” he murmurs as you get to your feet. you’re not able to speak just yet, only staring up at him with glossy eyes. he brings you into a tight hug. his hands rub up and down your back, your arms snaking around his middle.
“tommy,” you try to whisper the nickname. you forgot your microphone is on. everyone “aw’s” at you both, including jimmy. “my love,” tom’s lips brush your cheek briefly. “hi, baby,” he speaks into your ear. you hide your face in his button up while he rocks you side to side.
he’s been away for a couple of months working on the third spider-man. this is the first time you’ve seen him since he left.
“shouldn’t you be in atlanta?” you ask louder this time for the audience to hear. you’re still doing an interview. “today’s a big day. i had to see you,” tom gives you one last squeeze. “in person,” he adds, before you can say you already facetimed.
the fact that him and jimmy put this whole thing together is making you emotional. you’d be fully crying if you two were alone right now.
“she doesn’t want you here, though. remember?” jimmy chimes in, tom breathing out a laugh. he sadly lets go of you. you flop back onto the couch, tom pointing behind him with his thumb. “i’ll just be on my way. five hour flight, no big deal.” “no, no, no, no. stay,” you whine and make grabby hands at him.
that’s all it takes for tom to slip into the spot next to you. he bites back a smile, putting an arm around you and the couch. you don’t want to annoy everyone with too much pda, so you subtly curl into his side. the people actually love you and tom together. jimmy claps his hands.
“we’ll be right back with y/n y/l/n and tom holland!” he says into the camera, the band playing more filler music. he steps out from behind the desk to greet tom. tom stands up, the two of them giving each other pats on the back. the camera stops rolling.
“hey, man. thanks for doing this,” tom puts a hand on jimmy’s arm. “anything for the happy couple. i’m gonna get some water, see you in five.” jimmy shoots you another smile on his way to his dressing room. you return it. that leaves you and tom to yourselves.
“baby,” you say in a sing song voice, dropping your head onto tom’s shoulder. “i’m so happy you’re here. i real life almost peed when you came out.” tom snakes his arm around your waist. “that would be upsetting,” he mumbles, his index finger drawing circles on you. “it would’ve ruined your very pretty dress.”
“you like it?” you knowingly tug at the form fitting material. tom shifts in his spot. “i’ll tell you what,” he leans in closer to you with a smirk, his breath tickling your ear. “we’re getting no sleep tonight,” he sings from the chorus of your song. you burst into a giggle and squeeze your eyes shut.
he ends up being right.

The Princess and The Pogue (pt. 4)
Pairing: JJ x Female!Reader / Topper x Female!Reader
Word Count: 5.5k
Warnings: swearing, angst
Part Summary: You wake up at the Chateau in JJ’s arms. When you receive a urgent call from Topper, you return to the Figure 8, much to JJ’s dismay.
Masterlist
Tumblr media
You wake up to the sound of a faint buzzing. A small groan leaves your throat as you attempt to stretch out your limbs, but are trapped beneath the weight of an arm. Your eyes flicker open and adjust to the golden rays pouring in from the window. JJ doesn't even shift, completely unaware of your moving. You recognize the sound of your phone buzzing and dig around the recliner. You two must've fallen asleep during the movie. Kiara and Pope remain on the floor, sprawled out like starfish. The couch is empty, John B and Sarah are probably in his room. You finally manage to find your phone beneath JJ's hip. You do your best to slide it out without waking him. Slowly, you climb out of the chair, placing JJ's arm down gently.
“Hello?” You whisper, suppressing a yawn as you step out to the porch to not wake the others.
“Hey, Princess," Topper's worried voice echoes through the device. "Did I wake you?”
You settle down on the couch in a ball, shaking your head as if Topper can see you. “No, No, it’s okay," you lie for his sake. "Is everything alright?”
“It’s Rafe..." he sighs. "He kinda got outta hand last night and he hasn’t been to bed yet. He keeps saying he’s going to go to your house. I don’t think your parents should see him like this.”
“What?" Your brows scrunch together in confusion. Slowly, the events of last night are creeping back to you. You remember all of it, but some parts are only flashes like photographs. "I’m not even home.”
“Wait, where are you then?” Topper questions, sounding just as confused as you.
“I uh... I stayed at Sarah's," you conjure up on a whim.
“Okay..." he replies, not sounding fully convinced. "well do you think you could stop by my place or something? Rafe won’t shut up until he sees you. Thank God my mom left for Atlanta this morning. I can pick you up if you need.”
“No, it’s okay. I’ll uh... I’ll borrow Sarah’s car or something. I’ll text you when I’m on my way," you determine.
“Okay, see you then," Topper agrees, hanging up the phone.
You drop the device in your lap, resting your forehead against your knees. None of this feels real. What are you even doing here? One minute you and Topper are stumbling out of the locker room and the next you're making out with JJ in a hammock. Holy shit, you made out with JJ in a hammock! Topper is going to kill you! He can't know. No, he can never know.
“Morning Baby," JJ greets as he steps out onto the porch. He rubs his eyes as he walks over to join you.
“Morning, sorry that I woke you up,” you apologize.
"Don't be." He plops down next to you, bringing his arm to rest between your tucked legs. His hand is warm against your exposed knee. A part of you wants to cling to him like a koala, but your mind is also on Topper. "Who was that?” He yawns.
“Topper," you answer truthfully, though it was hesitant. "Apparently, Rafe is acting out and keeps asking for me. I’m gonna head over there to calm him down a little."
“Wait, what!" JJ's eyes widen, processing what you said. "By yourself?”
“JJ, it’s okay! It’s just Topper and Rafe,” you snicker at his dramatic reaction.
“Yeah! Rafe!" He repeats, turning his body toward you. His arm between your legs moves to your back and is replaced with his free one. "The guy who gave you laced weed, Babe!"
Your lower lip pouts slightly as you're appreciative of his concern though it's not necessary. Impulsively, you bring your hand to his cheek and he leans into your touch subtly. “It’ll be fine, we’re not going to do anything. I’m just helping out Top. Once we get Rafe to chill I’ll be out of there.”
“I’m driving,” he names his terms sternly.
Your lips part as worry starts to build up inside you. “JJ, I don’t think that’s such a good idea. I-“
“I wasn’t asking," he cuts you off sharply, his lips pressed together. “Either I go with you and wait in the car or you don’t go at all," he offers an ultimatum.
'Okay, that's hot,' you think to yourself.
You sit stunned for a second. As much as you hate the name, you're still the Princess of the OBX, no one talks to you like that or gives you ultimatums. Yet, you can't help but be utterly compliant when it comes to JJ Maybank.
“Okay," you nod, trying your hardest to not blush, but ultimately fail. "As long as there’s no Pogue vs. Kook fistfights," you add to the rules.
JJ notices your eyes wandering to his lips and leans forward with a smirk. “I can’t make any promises.”
You grin as JJ brushes his lips against yours, bringing you in for a kiss. When he woke up JJ was nervous that he fucked up last night and that you'd regretted everything. It's just JJ always assuming the worst to avoid disappointment. His arm on you was him testing the waters. After a second, once learning that you're not going to pull away, he deepens the kiss. Your fingers comb through his luscious hair and grip the roots slightly. His hand on your knee steadily glides down your skin, moving between your legs.
"Oh no!" You gasp against his lips, realizing something.
JJ jumps, breaking his lips from yours and flying his hands off. “Woah, what! Sorry!” He thought maybe his hand may have set you off or something. He’s not sure what your boundaries are or anything, everything is still so new.
“I don’t have a change of clothes!" You tell him.
“Jesus," he rolls his eyes, finally able to breathe again. "Wear my shirt you’re wearing,” he gestures to the black AC/DC shirt hanging on you.
You raise your eyebrows. “And have them start a fight? No way! They'll know it’s not mine," you explain stressfully.
"You're right, tell them it's your boyfriend's and to mind their own damn business," JJ determines with a carefree shrug. Only after a couple seconds does he process that he called himself your boyfriend, having not discussed that yet.
You raise your brows at his remark. A faint laugh escapes you, as if that would go over well with the boys. “As much as I would love to, I don’t think that would go well considering Rafe is already losing his mind.”
A rush of relief consumes JJ when you don’t reject him. In fact, he’s over the moon when you don’t deny that he’s indeed your boyfriend.
“So..." JJ drags out, gliding your fingers up and down your thigh. "Did you give Topper a specific time?”
“No, just that I’d be over as soon as possible." You smirk, already knowing what he's thinking. "Why?”
"Because if I remember correctly," he purrs into your ear with a smirk. "We were rudely interrupted last night..."
As much as you'd love to do what JJ has in mind, you owe it to Topper to show up at a decent time. "We have the rest of the day for that," you move back a little, much to JJ's disappointment. He groans, making you giggle. "If Rafe acts up any more than he already has and goes to my house I'm royally screwed."
"Okay, fine! Fine!" He rises up from the couch and offering you a hand. "But I'm holding you to your word! I expect full tomfoolery later!"
"Deal." You lean in and plant a peck to his lips, making him blush.
JJ grabs the keys to the Twinkie while you wait outside. You go over the plan multiple times on the way over, mainly to ease your nerves. JJ will park a few yards down the road, hidden behind the hedges that line Topper's yard. You will tell Topper that Sarah dropped you off and that you'll walk home because you live a few blocks away. Checking on Rafe will only take twenty minutes tops, but you're aiming for fifteen. You've done this before, taking care of Rafe. Get sick, chug Pedialyte, have Mcdonald's delivered, and put him to bed.
You text Topper as soon as you're on your side of the island.
Heading over now!
A minute later, you receive a response.
Awesome! See you soon! Thanks again Y/N/N. Owe you one!
JJ does exactly as planned, making sure the Twinkie can't be seen from Topper's house. Reluctantly, he lets you out without him. He warns though that if you don't text him or give him some sign that you're okay within the ten-minute time slot he's given that he'll come in after you. You promise that you'll text him a smiley face as soon as you get the chance.
You knock on Topper's front door a few times and wait for the tall boy to answer. After a few minutes you call for your friends. "Top! Rafe!"
"I don't want you! I want Y/N!" You hear from the backyard and make your way back.
"She's on her way!" Topper shouts.
"Dude! Just sit down!" You hear Kelce add.
"Guys?" You pop your head around the corner and find Rafe standing on the edge of Topper's pool, fully clothed in his suit from the night before.
"Y/N! Finally!" Rafe gleams, gripping a bottle of champagne in his hand.
"Thank God," Topper grumbles to himself as he approaches you. "Thanks again for coming," he greets with a kiss to your temple.
"Of course," you smile as you move toward Kelce. You give him a quick side hug as you greet everyone. "When did you get here?"
"About five minutes ago," he answers, breathless from trying to keep Rafe from jumping in. "Apparently I'm not good enough because he keeps asking for you."
"Hey, Rafe, what's up?" You call over to the boy as stumbles over to you.
"Geez, you are the most gorgeous girl in the OBX," he grins.
"Oh am I now? What have you been up to?" You asking, knowing the answer. He smells of weed, sweat, and stale alcohol. His suit will no doubt need some serious dry cleaning.
"Eh, nothing too exciting," he waves his hand and places an arm over your shoulder. "After you disappeared from the party the boys and I went back to do a few more lines. It wasn't as fun without you. Where did you go anyway? We looked all over for you."
JJ crosses his arms over his chest. "Yeah, where'd you go?" He repeats as if you didn't explain it before on the phone.
You frown at your best friend. Why is he acting like that? "Sarah convinced her parents to give her the car and she took me to her house while her parents were are the party," you repeat the story you rehearsed with JJ.
"But Sarah was still at the party after we lost you. She told your parents that you left..." Topper replies slowly, almost as though he's accusing you of something.
"Yeah, I was waiting in the car," you answer without hesitation.
"Right..." Topper nods with narrowed eyes.
You roll your eyes at Topper and bring your arm around Rafe. "Let's get you inside."
"I wanted to go for a swim," Rafe whines.
"That sounds so fun," you pretend, silently begging him to go inside without any retaliation. "Sadly, I didn't bring my suit."
"Come on, Y/N, it's not like I haven't seen you in your underwear before," Rafe chuckles as you cross the threshold of the sliding door.
"Nice, Rafe," Topper sarcastically remarks.
"Oh no, I think I'm gonna be sick," Rafe coughs, hutching over next to you.
"I got this one," Kelce shouts, moving to get his friend toward the bathroom.
Now that Rafe is inside and in the "get sick" stage, you move on to ordering him McDonald's. Knowing Topper's house like the back of your hand, you walk into the kitchen, leaving the boy in the living room. You hop onto the counter, your legs dangle over the edge. As you tap through your phone, Topper enters the room.
"Are you feeling better?" He checks on you with a smile, a complete 180 from the attitude he was giving you minutes before. "I was out of it but I vaguely remember us stumbling out of the locker room," he chuckles.
"Yeah we kinda went a little too far last night," you giggle, recalling the memory. "But I feel much better."
Topper nods, offering you a faint smirk. He parts your legs, resting his palms on your thighs. "I'm surprised Ward let you and Sarah take his new Porsche considering he won't even let Rose drive it."
Your heart races, shit. You didn't realize Ward took the Porsche to the party. When Sarah got to John B's she was in a BMW.
"He must've had a lot of whiskey or something," you ramble out.
The boy nods, bringing his hands to your hips. "Interesting... and-" Topper scrunches his brows together, glancing down at your body. "What are you wearing right now?"
Shit.
"It's uh... Sarah's," you blurt out what JJ said before you can think it through.
"Sarah owns a ripped-up AC/DC shirt?" Topper snickers, not believing you for a second.
"What? You don't?" You try to play it off.
"Did you end up borrowing Sarah's car?" He changes the subject quickly, making your furrow your brows.
"She dropped me off," you stick to your story.
"That's nice of her," Topper comments, stepping closer to you. Usually, you'd like having him so close, but there's an underlying tension between you that makes you anxious.
"For sure," you mutter, avoiding his gaze.
"So you need a ride home?" He offers.
"Nah, it's okay. I'll walk," you rush out.
Topper brings his hand to the collar of your shirt, his fingertips gliding across your collar bone to rest on the side of your neck. "I kinda needed to see your brother anyway."
You swallow hard, trying to remain calm. "For what?"
"We're supposed to go out to the course later," he matches your quiet tone.
"Cool," you nod faintly, starring down at your lap.
"You and that Pogue seemed friendly last night before I came over... " Topper insinuates.
Your head snaps up, meeting Topper's burning gaze. "Pogue? What Pogue?"
"The one bartending," he snickers mockingly.
"The blonde kid? Oh, not really," your brows scrunch together, nervously fidgeting with your phone case. "I only met him last night, didn't even catch his name," you lie.
Topper tilts his head to the side. "Isn't he friends with John B? He's been around the Cameron's place a few times."
"I haven't noticed," you shrug.
You can't tell whether he believes you or not. His stern expression never wavering. You feel trapped with his hands gripping your hips.
"He's certainly noticed you, hasn't he?" The boy remarks with a wicked smirk as he stares at your lips.
You shift your head back, taken aback by his words. "What does that mean?"
"Oh come on, Y/N," Topper mutters your name, not one of his usual nicknames. "You're telling me you didn't notice him looking you up and down? It's why I came over to the bar after your dance with Rafe. I already had a full whiskey on the table."
You snicker at the information, utterly amazed by the lengths Topper will go. "You ordered a drink just because you thought JJ was "too friendly" with me?"
Topper narrows his eyes at you curiously. "I thought you didn't know his name?"
Chills course over your skin as your breath hitches in your throat. Now, you remember that you haven't texted JJ and you're not sure how long it's been.
"You want to tell me what's really going on, Y/N?" Topper presses.
"Nothing's happening! I've gotta go," you snap, pressing a hand to his chest to urge him off of you.
Topper grabs your wrist, removing your hand from him. Abruptly, he slams his lips to yours. Desprately, he brings his free hand to the back of your neck, pulling you closer to him.
"Get-" you mutter against his lips as you try to fight him off. Instinctively you punch him in the chest, causing him to break from you. "Get off of me!" You gasp, hopping down from the counter as Topper stumbles back. "What the hell Topper!"
His eyes grow wide, comprehending what he's done. He reches for you, but you cower away. "Y/N, I-"
"No!" Your voice cracks as tears threaten to fall from your eyes. "You don't just get to do that whenever you feel like it! I'm not at your disposal when you want me!"
He nods frantically. "I know that! I didn't-"
"Ugh, whatever Top. I'm tired of this interrogation! You and Kelce can babysit Rafe without me!" You wave your hands as your march out of the room toward the front door.
"Y/N! Y/N, wait!" Topper calls after you. "Y/N!"
He follows you out the front door to the driveway in a panic. He can't believe he just kissed you, the one thing he swore he'd never do without your permission. He was just so desperate. He could feel you moving away from him and was panicking that maybe you were keeping something from him.
"Y/N!" Topper wraps his fingers around your wrist.
You yank your arm free as you spin on your heels to face him. "Don't grab me!"
"Don't walk out on me!" He barks, instantly regretting it.
Topper knows this isn't the way to get to you, but he's just so worried that you're slipping away. This wouldn't be the first time you two have fought this way, having it out in front of one of your houses. Similar to an old married couple, you two fight as passionately as you love each other.
"You don't own me, Topper!" You remind the boy.
"I'm just looking out for you!" He reasons in a shot.
"You're the one who's acting like my dad right now!" You scoff.
"Oh!" He laughs mockingly. "Is that what being an overbearing friend is called now?"
You huff, turning over your shoulder to continue down the driveway.
Topper stays where he is, yelling at you as your march away. "You know what, fine! Don't tell me what's going on! I just thought we were closer than that! I must've misunderstood all of last year, all of those late-night conversations and that weekend in Bermuda or all of winter break!"
"Oh, my lord!" You groan, tossing your head back as you stop in your tracks. "Stop being so dramatic!"
"What's he doing here?" Topper questions, his volume at a normal level.
You frown, following his eyes as they linger behind you. Turning over your shoulder, you spot JJ standing at the end of the driveway.
You hide your face in your hands. "Oh, Jesus-"
"You have to be kidding me!" Topper shouts with a chuckle of frustration.
"JJ, can you give us a minute?" You request calmly, giving the blonde a weak smile.
"You brought him! You bring a Pogue!" Topper can't help but laugh, shocked by how this day has gone to complete shit in a span of fifteen minutes.
Nervously, you rush over to Topper, pressing your hands to his chest. "Top, just go inside, okay!" You try your best to keep the situation civil. "I'll be inside in a minute-"
"You're on the wrong side of the island, Pogue!" He points to JJ over his shoulder.
"Just stick a cork in it, Prince Charming," JJ bites back from his spot.
You huff, using all your strength to push a stubborn Topper toward the front door. He towers over you and is much stronger than you, so it's a tall task.
"Prince Charming? Really!" Topper laughs. "Wow, got a real smartass here, Princess," he tells you.
"Just for the love of all that good and holy go inside!" You beg of him with a grunt as you continue to guide him inch by inch.
"Not until you get this trailer park trash off my driveway!" Topper bitterly remarks, loud enough for JJ to hear.
"JJ and I will go as soon as we're done here," you tell him calmly with a huff, giving up on moving him.
You step back, preparing to leave, but Topper grips your forearms. "No way you're leaving with him! No, you're staying here with us!"
When Topper grabs you, JJ loses all cool and storms toward your friend. "Touch her again and I'll kick your ass, Kook!" JJ likes to think he's been rather rational and on his best behavior up until this point considering Topper is treating you as his property.
"JJ! Don't!" You intercept the boy and though he could easily move you aside, he remains in your arms.
"As if I'd leave her with your tripped-out friend and cluster of misogynistic asshole!" He points at Topper aggressively.
"You don't know a thing about us, Pogue!" Topper pushes.
"Topper! Enough! JJ back off!" You instruct sharply.
With a growl, JJ walks back down the driveway, refusing to turn his back on the Kook. Cooling down slowly, he takes your hand, squeezing it tightly as he leads you toward the sidewalk.
"You leave with him now and we're done!" Topper declares, making you stop in your tracks. "I mean it! You leave now and you're a Pogue!"
"You don't mean that," you shake your head in disbelief.
He laughs wickedly, "I promise you I do! It's them or us! You can't have both, Y/N!"
It feels as though Topper has sucked all life from you. The light that he's kept going inside of you for so long has burned out. He's been your reason to be happy since you were kids and now he's threatening to desert you forever. All because you're falling for a Pogue.
Kelce and Rafe appear in the archway of the front door. Kelce frowns, "what's going on out here?"
"What's that Pogue doing here?"  Rafe questions. He sees your grieving expression and his wild antics become a distant memory. "Y/N?"
You swallow hard, clenching your jaw in disgust at the Kook you once called your best friend. "Ask Topper!"
You yank your hand free of JJ's and run down the driveway in the direction of the Twinkie. JJ jogs after you worriedly. He unlocks the car and you rush to get in. As soon as you sit down, you hunch over in your seat, your head cradled in your hands. JJ climbs in next to you and starts the car. He glances over at you and a wave of guilt consumes. He can't help but think this is all his fault. If he hadn't gone to check on you, maybe Topper wouldn't have said what he did. You wouldn't be devastated and you'd acknowledge his presence.
JJ places a hand on your back. "Baby-"
Before JJ can finish you cower away from him, moving your body toward the window. His heart drops as a million worst-case scenarios start to play in his mind. You hate him. You hate him now because he cost you, Topper. Of course, he already thought about what it would mean if you had to choose between him or Topper. He just had a naive inkling of hope that maybe you'd choose him and be okay, be happier with him. Now, he realizes by your disgust of him that you would've chosen Topper if Topper didn't push you toward JJ.

The ride back to John B's is painfully silent. JJ had to turn on the radio five minutes in to drown out the overwhelming self-deprecating thoughts ringing in his mind. As soon as JJ rolls up to the end of the gravel driveway, you see the Pogues and Sarah gathered around the old bonfire eating breakfast. Not wanting to see them, you hop out, the car not even in park yet.
"Hey guys! Where have-" Sarah stops as she sees you run into the house. JJ climbs out of the van and slams the door shut, grumbling various cuss words to himself. "What's wrong with Y/N?" Sarah asks him once he's closer to the group.
"Topper called her this morning," the boy answers, pressing his lips together as he sits on an empty log. "Your brother was acting up and wouldn't chill out until he saw her. Long story short, I fucked up and intervened when things got tense with her and Topper," JJ hisses, clasping his hands together. "Topper told her that if she left with me that they wouldn't talk to her again so we left..."
The group is silent, exchanging worried glances. Sarah's jaw is nearly in the dirt. She never thought in a million years that Topper would ever say those words to you. JJ's knee shakes up and down as he hides his head above his knees.  He rises to his feet, picking up an empty can from last night, and chucks it into the words with all his strength. "Y/N won't even fucking look at me!"
"That's not your fault, JJ," Kiara assures her friend, breaking the silence. "You did the right thing! Topper is a jerk!"
"She'll come around. It's probably for the best that she's cut off from them. Those guys aren't good for her," Sarah adds.
JJ exhales deeply, facing Sarah. "Do you know what happened last year or in Bermuda and Topper said something about winter break?"
"Oh..." the girl's face falls.
"What is it? Is it bad?" John B asks from beside her.
"Not exactly. Topper and Y/N... Well..." she struggles to come up with the right words.
You and Topper struggle to navigate your way through the pitch-black bungalow. You two have just gotten dropped off from the cantina in town. Half an hour before, Topper was doing body shots off of you. The boy leads you through the house, his hand wrapped tightly around yours. Through the moonlight, you notice a pillar right in Topper's path.
“Watch out!” You gasp, tugging Topper back.
“Oh shit!” He stumbles into you, pinning you against the wall.
“I told you to watch out!” You giggle and peek around the corner into the living room. “Oh my god!” Your hand flies up to your mouth.
“What! What is it?” Topper rushes out.
“Rafe and that girl from Brazil,” you whisper, suppressing your laughter.
“No way! You’re kidding!” Through the darkness, you can see Topper's eye grow wide as he steps to the side to see around the corner.
“On the couch!” You instruct drunkenly.
“Did they?” He wonders.
“I have no idea!” You giggle.
“Holy shit!” Topper laughs as he returns to stand in front of you.
“He was blasted tonight,” you remember. “Poor Kelce went to bed as soon as we got back."
“I didn’t mind it,” Topper mutters, gliding his fingertips up and down your arm. “Kinda liked it being just us...”
“Topper,” you whisper his name warningly, a smile on your lips.
“What?” He chuckles lightly, leaning in closer to you.
You shake your head, finding it hard not to blush. “We broke up almost a year ago. You and Sarah-“
“Are broken up," he finishes.
“Yeah, and remember how devastated you were no more than two weeks ago?" You try to reason with him. "You still need to heel and figure out what you want.”
“I want you," he whispers, brushing lips against yours.
“Top, I don’t think-“
Before you can finish, he kisses you softly. It's not the first time and you know in the back of your mind it likely won't be the last.
“You’re all I think about, Y/N,” he confesses against your lips. “I need to feel you again. I miss the way you taste.”
“Top...” You mutter breathlessly.
You shake your head, despite not stopping him. “We shouldn’t...”
“We deserve to, don’t we? After everything?" He reasons, tucking his fingers over the band of your panties. "You like me and I like you, we’re both single, there’s history, why can’t we?”
A million reasons cross your mind, the most important one, your friendship. You and Topper have always been complicated. Things get worse when you add sex to the mix, which is exactly why you two formed boundaries a while back. Then again, you two toss those boundaries out the window every time you drink too much.
One hand remains on your waist as the other slips down to the hem of your dress. His warm fingertips glide under the fabric, against your thigh. “Don’t you miss it? How we used to be? When we couldn’t get enough of each other," he smirks as a memory pops into his head that he's certain will get to you. “Our ski trip over Christmas.”
“Okay yeah, you win," you rush out, instantly pressing your lips to his desperately.
Topper snickers against your lips as he tucks his hands behind your legs and picks you up. Your legs wrap around his waist he just so happens to know effortlessly the direction to his room now. Though he was completely lost minutes before.
"They dated!" Pope's jaw nearly hits the gravel.
"No way!" John B wears a similar expression.
"Yes and no. It's more complicated than that," Sarah tries to explain
Kiara struggles to piece together the picture. "But I thought you two-"
"They were friends with benefits before we were dating. Then, when Topper and I started dating, they stopped. Topper and I took a break in the winter and they started up again but stopped after Y/N decided that she couldn't do it anymore. Finally, they all went to Bermuda for a week after Midsummers. They didn't plan on anything happening, according to Y/N, but it kinda just did. They've always had "a thing" for each other. It's only ever been a fling though," Sarah finally manages to lay out the hectic story.
"And you're okay with that?" Kiara frowns, wondering how Sarah fits into all of that.
"Nothing happened while we were together," she shrugs but is certain of her words. "I know without a doubt that Y/N would never do that to me. Plus, it was never dating-like... it was more hook-up-ish if that makes sense?"
"This is insane!" JJ finally voices his perspective, rubbing his hand across the back of his neck.
"I need a diagram," Pope adds.
"Wait, so Topper and Y/N are on-and-off again. Meanwhile, Rafe has a thing for Y/N. Does Kelce play a role in any of this?" John B brings up a good point.
Sarah shakes her head. "Not that I know of."
"That's one fucked up love triangle," Pope releases a pent-up sigh.
"This is why we have the "no Pogue-on-Pogue macking" rule. That friend group is a mess!" Kiara reasons.
"Topper and Y/N have always been super close," Sarah describes solemnly considering the recent turn of events. "She must be devastated! Even if he is an ass. He's only ever been good to Y/N. I was low-key jealous of her when I first started seeing Topper. He holds her up on this pedestal," she admits.
Suddenly, the screendoor creaks, making everyone turn their attention toward the house. Y/N marches out, back in her dress from last night.
John B breaks the silence. "Hey Y/N! Where are you-"
"Sarah, can you drive me home?" You ignore the boy on your way to Sarah's car, unlocking it.
Sarah stands slowly from her position. "Sure, but don't you-"
"Thanks!" You cut her off, already climbing into the passenger seat and putting the keys into the ignition.
"I'll... I'll be back later," Sarah stammers in confusion to her friends.
Everyone watches as Sarah back out of the driveway then turns their focus to a devastated JJ.
"I fucked it up. I fucked it up!" He screams, squeezes his hands into fists until his knuckles are white.
"JJ, it's okay! She probably just needs a minute," Kiara rushes out.
"I have her for two seconds!" He bursts, his face becoming red with frustration. "Two fucking seconds and I ruined it just like I ruin everything else!"
"Just give it time!" Pope tries to reason with him calmly.
"Goddammit!" JJ curses before bolting toward the driveway and out of sight.
"JJ!" His friends all call for him.
"JJ come back!" John B shouts to receive no response. "Well this day is officially shit," the boy huffs as he settles back down onto his log.
"Do you think they'll be okay?" Kiara worries.
"Hope so," John B whispers.
After Sarah drops you off, you hide away in your room for the rest of the day. All you do is cry. You already miss Topper more than anything. You need him. You'll always need him. Then, on top of that, you're torturing yourself for how you treated JJ. None of this is his fault, but you treated him like it was. You cowered from him to keep from crying. You didn't want to scare him away, but in the process, you pushed him away. While you're losing your mind, JJ is losing his outside his dad's house with a half-empty bottle of Jim Beam in his hand. He's looking to pick a fight. He figures that if he's in pain physically that the pain he's inflicting on himself mentally will go away. You started the day wrapped up in each other and in bliss. You're ending it both in pain and willing to do anything to make it go away.

Transcript of Kelly Marie Tran and Jenny Yang’s conversation for CAA Amplify’s Town Hall on Confronting Anti-Asian Racism on April 1, 2021. Watch the full video on CAA Amplify’s website at amplify.caa.com/library/ (linked in source).
Kelly and Jenny’s part starts at the 47 minute mark and is about 7 minutes long.
To know more about what was discussed at the town hall and the other speakers, read ‘CAA Amplify Town Hall Confronts Anti-Asian Racism; Asian Community Finds Power In No Longer Staying Silent – Commentary’ on Deadline.com.
Jenny Yang: [waves] Hi, Amplify! Kelly Marie Tran: [laughs] Hi! JY: Kelly! Hi! KMT: Jenny! Oh my gosh! JY: I just want you to appreciate the matchy-ness of my look today. KMT: I’m loving the coordination. The shirt with that little pot in the back. You look like someone who’s got everything together. [laughs] JY: You know, we’re trying to. We’re still in a pandemic. And now we’re gonna talk about being in Hollywood as an Asian American! KMT: Great! [laughs] JY: Let’s do it!
JY: With everything that’s been going on in the world, um, with… Frankly, feeling like Asian Americans, being an Asian woman in particular, with the shooting and murders in Atlanta… Like, feeling, like, under attack and super sad. How have you kind of come to understand who you are now as an Asian American in entertainment because of all of this?
KMT: There’s just so many emotions being felt at one time and I think… [sighs] For me, I wanted to dismantle, like, internalized racism, racism inside of me. It’s no secret that I left the Internet for very specific reasons. One thing that I think made a really big impact on me was recognizing just how deep seated the racism was. That was something that I don’t know that I knew the extent of it. And it made me really think about, okay, how do I figure out how I’m working within this system that has… perpetuated this thing.
JY: You unfortunately saw some of the worst, um, hate and ire that’s directed at.. women and particularly you as an Asian American woman, right? I mean, like, publicly. Just because, just because you exist! And this is what’s so, so, like, like, bonkers for me. And I think it’s really cool that, like, you’re admitting to having internalized some of this. Because I feel like that’s one of the first steps, right? It’s like… we need to educate ourselves and get right with ourselves as well as take action.
JY: When, uh, the pandemic first hit, we all had to stay at home. March, like, 11th, was my last day, 2020, of being out in public. About a week later, I was going out, just me and my, you know, blunt bangs, right? And my Asian ass eyes. In front of me stops a pickup truck of, sort of a middle aged white guy. He stopped right in front of me while I was at the corner when he had a green light and flipped me off. What was that for? Nothing had happened. And yet I’m getting accosted, assaulted, whatever. And then it hit me. And then I got hot in my face. And I was like, oh! This is because people think I am responsible for the pandemic. This is because our president and other people call it the China Virus, call it Kung Flu, make it a punchline. It’s telling someone driving down the street that I am a target for their, their hate. It was really upsetting that, okay, wow, this is the beginning of the pandemic, this is what’s to come. It is really important for me to think about what does it mean for us now as Asian Americans in Hollywood and honestly other people who are non-Asian in Hollywood to step up.
KMT: Like, what is helpful moving forward? You know, there’s so… so many instances of uh… you know, my friends and people that I’ve worked with who have, you know, done the social media posts and donated to foundations. They’re reading books about how to dismantle their own internalized racism. Like, what is that next step? And how do we actually, um… Help create change.
JY: You know, Andrew Yang, presidential then presidential candidate, put out a Washington Post op-ed that’s essentially said Asian Americans, if you want to fight anti-Asian racism, then you need to show that you’re more American so that we can be more liked. And, um, I wanted to test that premise in a video and I did that. And, um, you know, I went out with a sign that says, you know, honk if you, uh, if you won’t hate crime me. A middle aged white woman and her son drove around and stopped me and said, “I honked earlier and we just made two loops just so that we could talk to you.” And she just started to go into tears. She’s like, “I am so sorry what’s happening to you and your community. We are… I want you to know that we’re here for you.” That, I will never forget. Because that’s what we need. We need people who, um… are going to be there for us, not just as allies, ’cause we say that word so easily. We need people to be like adopted family! Who wanna join us, alright? Who are, uh, willing to be the intense aunties and uncles of our families who will stand up, whether you’re Asian or not, to actually risk something. ’Cause to me this is what, this is what it’s about.
KMT: During the pandemic, you had this comedy show called Comedy Crossing over Animal Crossing because we couldn’t do it in person and you raised over 30,000 dollars for Black Lives Matter. And that’s someone who is showing up. And that is someone who is risking something. When you’re talking about holding on to hope and you’re talking about a vision for a better world, like, that’s what you did. I’m getting emotional talking about it!
JY: I know! Why are you doing this, Kelly! [wipes eye] KMT: Because it’s true! [laughs] JY: Why are you doing this! KMT: Because it’s true! [laughs]
JY: I mean, listen… There’s more we can always do, but we need to do what we can, you know? And I’m not perfect at all, and… I probably could risk more. I really admire, you know, in your journey, sort of your moment when you, when you, I feel like really took a step forward. And so— Oh, now I’m gonna tear up again. I remember reading the draft of it in that cafe before the pandemic and tearing up and being so happy and proud of you because I know for a fact that, like you were saying earlier, it was very challenging to all of a sudden be thrusted into the public spotlight and become… automatically representation as an Asian American woman, right? In pop culture. And I don’t think people are prepared for that! Honestly, every single person who works in entertainment who has any kind of platform, we all need like mandatory training or something. Asian American studies… KMT: [laughs] JY: Asian American history. So.
KMT: Um. I was just gonna say I’m really grateful for our friendship and the way in which… recognizing that no matter how hard an experience gets, it always gets a little easier if you’re not in isolation within that experience.
JY: The more we can stay connected with each other, right? And encourage each other and not feel alone, I think that’s the way we get through this.
KMT: I’m really grateful to have had this conversation. Just to hear more about your insights as someone who is a community organizer, someone who has been furthering, um, not just the movement in terms of, you know, combating anti-Asian hate, but also anti-Black hate. Um… And how do we continue to be productive as people who all obviously are now sort of pulled into wanting to help in ways that will further, um, hopefully these movements.
JY: Yeah. Thank you. KMT: I love you so much, friend. It’s so good to virtually see you. JY: I know! I love you too, Kelly Marie Tran. KMT and JY: Bye!

Tumblr media
Summary: Gloria Rhee narrowly escapes Atlanta with her brother as the outbreak reaches the city. Luckily, they find a camp outside the city and together, they fend through encounters with the living and undead.
Starts a little before Season 1 and then follows the main storyline of the show.
Pairing: Daryl Dixon x Glenn Sister!OC
Warnings: major TWD spoilers, language, violence (the typical TWD stuff)
A/N: and here we are... the FINAL (temporarily anyway hehe) chapter of Fated! It’s a pretty bittersweet feeling since I grew so attached to this series, I don’t really want it to end, which is why I have plans to continue it with the next few seasons of the show! And I know that the gif I used for this chapter was from season 6... but it was so hard to find any gifs of Daryl smiling... which is sad :( ANYWAY, let’s go forth with the last chapter!!!
Chapter 10
Tumblr media
It was mid afternoon at the Hilltop, people were going about their lives and doing their chores around the community. Gloria lies in her bed with a tired smile as she watches Daryl cradle the newborn baby girl in his arms, cooing at their daughter she had just given birth to mere hours ago.
“Hey,” Gloria calls out as she sits herself up on the bed, “haven’t you hogged her enough?”
Daryl looks at her and scoffs playfully, “ya’ve had her for nine months, and ya say I’m hoggin’ her.”
“That’s not even the same thing! And for the record, I didn’t even know I had her for the first four months.” she argues with a pout.
“Tha’s yer fault.” Daryl replies with a smirk then looks down at the baby girl in his arms, “isn’t it? Hm?”
Gloria isn’t able to hide her smile as she sees Daryl talking to the baby, she then opens her arms in his direction, “can I at least get some affection from my husband then?”
Daryl looks at her and smiles at her words, he steps towards the bed as Gloria scoots to the side, making room for him to sit down. Cradling the baby in his arm, wrapping his other around Gloria who snuggles into him. She leans her head on his chest as she smiles down at their daughter.
“How did we make something so innocent and pure like her?” Gloria says softly, not wanting to wake up the sleeping girl.
“She gets all that from ya,” he says, pressing a kiss on Gloria’s forehead, “she wouldn’ be here if it weren’t for ya.”
“You say that as if you don’t know how babies are made,” she chuckles, making Daryl roll his eyes.
“I mean it,” he looks at her sincerely, “ya carried her for 9 months, yer body protected her, even from the Saviors and ya didn’t even know ya had her. If ya weren’t as tough and strong as ya are, she might not’ve made it.”
Gloria smiles at his words and brushes their daughter’s cheek gently with her finger, “I can’t take all the credit for that, she’s a little fighter too, I just did my role as a mother, even if I didn’t know it yet, my body for sure did.”
Daryl hums in agreement, “an’ I’ll protect ya both, like a dad’s supposed to.”
Gloria looks at Daryl at his words, “hey,” she calls out to him in a whisper as she caresses his face.
There was a sadness in Daryl’s voice and Gloria knew where it came from. She knew very well what kind of man Daryl’s father was and what he did to Daryl and Merle when they were kids.
“You’re gonna be such an amazing father, I can tell.” she says with a soft smile.
“Can ya?” he lets out a small chuckle.
Gloria nods, “just by the way you hold her, you’re a natural. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you had more experience, and I’m not just talking about Judith.”
“Hmm... maybe I do an’ jus’ never told ya.” Daryl teases with a smirk.
She eyes him playfully, “you’re lucky I love you.”
“You’re right, I am,” he says, pulling her in for a kiss, “I’m the luckiest man alive.”
Gloria giggles into his lips and kisses him back tenderly. Their kiss is interrupted by a knock on the door, the two pull away from each other as Maggie opens the door with a smile.
“Hey, how are you feeling?” she asks.
“Not too bad, given that I just popped a baby out of me,” Gloria says with a chuckle.
“Are you able to walk?” Maggie asks, “Carol’s downstairs with the others, if you’re too tired I can let them know.”
“I think I’ll be okay, I may need you to help me down the stairs though,” Gloria smiles.
Maggie chuckles and nods, going over to Gloria as she gets off the bed, “since you got attached, you hold onto her,” Gloria says to Daryl.
He scoffs playfully and gets off the bed as well, not denying that he did get attached to their daughter fairly quickly. The three of them make it out the room with Daryl carrying the little girl in his arms as they go down the stairs. Maggie gently holds onto Gloria as she takes each step and finally they’re on the ground floor. Gloria turns into what she considered the lobby of the Barrington house and she’s greeted by delighted smiles of people from Alexandria and the Kingdom. Carol is the first to go up to hug her.
“We came as soon as we heard it was happening,” she says as she pulls away from the hug, “how are you feeling?”
“Tired, exhausted, can’t wait to sleep,” Gloria says with a chuckle.
“I have some bad news for you then,” Rick says with a teasing smile, “you and Daryl aren’t gonna have a good night’s sleep for a while.”
“I don’ sleep much anyway,” Daryl mutters then turns his attention to their daughter who had woken up, “right? You’re gonna keep us up, aren’t ya?”
“I’ve never seen Daryl like that before,” Aaron says in awe as he watches the two.
“He was like that with Judith,” Michonne grins at the sight.
Daryl looks at the others who are staring at him, slight blush creeping on his cheeks, “what?”
Tara shrugs, “I just don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard you be so... gentle before?”
“Yeah, it’s amazing what kind of hold she has on you,” Rosita grins as she teases Daryl.
Eugene nods as he stands beside her, “I have to say, witnessing Daryl as amiable as he is right now is really a sight to behold.”
Daryl purses his lips and looks to Gloria for help and she chuckles as she shakes her head, “alright guys, that’s enough, you’re embarrassing him.”
“There’s nothing to be embarrassed about, Daryl,” Ezekiel smiles warmly at him, “I believe what the others are trying to say is that you are a natural with your kin.”
“You’re a natural, dude!” Jerry chimes in cheerily.
“Thanks..” Daryl mutters, his face still a light shade of pink.
“So!” Jesus starts, clapping his hands together, “Have you two decided on a name for your little girl?”
His question turns their immediate attention to Daryl and Gloria, patiently waiting for their answer. They all look eager to chime in with suggestions if needed. Gloria smiles at this and glances at Daryl.
“Go ahead,” he says with a small smile.
Gloria nods then looks at the others, mainly focusing on Maggie and Carol, “we decided to name her Sophia Bethany Dixon.”
Grateful smiles light up Maggie and Carol’s faces as they hear the name given. Gloria lets out a breath of relief when they thank her with a deep hug. She and Daryl had discussed it when they found out they had a daughter. Gloria thought it was only fitting to name her after Sophia and Beth to honor the girls.
---
Sophia is now a few days old as Gloria places her in the crib beside Hershel’s. She’s finally drifted off to sleep after a crying fit. Gloria lets out a soft sigh then goes to check on Hershel and smiles at his little sleeping figure. She tucks them both in to make sure they’re sound asleep then leaves the nursery. She makes her way to Maggie’s office and knocks three times before opening the door.
“Hey Maggie-” Gloria says as she opens the door but cuts herself short when she doesn’t see her sister-in-law in the room.
Instead, she’s met by Jesus standing by the door, Rick leaning on the desk, Daryl sitting on one of the chairs placed along the wall, and Ezekiel and Aaron standing by the chairs facing the desk. Gloria blinks as they all turn to look at her.
“Everythin’ okay?” Daryl perks up when he sees his wife in the doorway as if he’s ready to ditch whatever conversation is going on.
“Yeah, I’m just looking for Maggie, wanted to let her know the kids are out,” Gloria smiles at him then glances around the room, “so what’s going on here?”
“Nothin’-” Daryl tries to speak but he’s interrupted by Rick.
“Shouldn’t she have a say in this?” Rick says, gesturing to Gloria.
Gloria furrows her brows in confusion, crossing her arms and leaning on the door, propping it open, “have a say in what?”
“We’re trying to decide who Sophia’s Godfather should be.” Aaron informs her.
“Godfather?” Gloria lets out a chuckle, amused, “let me guess, you all have amazing reasons for why we should pick you?”
“I’m a King!” Ezekiel exclaims.
“I saved your life,” Aaron reminds her.
“Daryl’s my brother.” Rick says matter-of-factly.
“Come on, you call me Jesus.” he says, giving Gloria a knowing look.
“Ya see what I had to deal with in the last hour?” Daryl groans.
She shakes her head as she lets out a laugh, “okay... Ezekiel, you’re gonna be too busy taking care of the Kingdom and looking after Henry. Aaron, as much as I am very appreciative of you saving my life, you have your hands full with Gracie, already. And Rick, being Daryl’s brother means you’re already her uncle. Plus, all of you are busy in your own communities anyway.”
Jesus looks at her with a grin, “does that mean I win?”
“I can’t say I don’t like calling you Jesus and being her Godfather. ” Gloria tells him.
As she speaks, the main door to the Barrington house opens and Maggie, Carol, Rosita, and Tara walk in. The women glance at each other as they see Gloria standing in the doorway of Maggie’s office, propping open the door with her body.
“What’s going on?” Maggie asks as she walks towards her office.
Gloria turns to look at Maggie, “the guys are fighting over who’s Sophia’s Godfather.”
“My bet’s on Jesus.” Tara chips in, “his name, it’s Jesus!”
“Thank you!” he exclaims from inside the room, then grins cheekily, “and you were about to name me Sophia’s Godfather before they walked in?”
“Well, no,” Gloria chuckles as he pouts, “I was about to say that you’re going to have to fight Carol on the Godparent position.”
Gloria had this conversation with the women before Sophia was born. Maggie and Gloria had an agreement that since they were directly Hershel’s and Sophia’s aunts, it wouldn’t be fair for the others to give each other the title. Maggie had appointed Tara as Hershel’s Godmother. Rosita was perfectly fine with being their aunt. Daryl was more than accepting of Carol being his child’s Godmother.
Rick, Jesus, and Aaron groan in disappointment, knowing that it was impossible to beat Carol in a fight, as Ezekiel grins happily, “oh glorious day! I have been named Godfather of the lovely Sophia Bethany Dixon! Haha!”
The others look at Ezekiel in confusion while Carol freezes at his words. Gloria glances over at Carol and notices her cheeks flushing a light pink. A grin spreads across Gloria’s face and her grin is noticed by the other women and they all turn to look at Carol. She looks at them nervously and fidgets, making the other women giggle.
“Congratulations, Carol.” Gloria chuckles, patting Carol’s arm.
She rolls her eyes playfully at her and smiles, “thank you, now if we can stop him from announcing it to the world, that would be nice.”
They laugh at her words as Ezekiel says his speech, announcing his relationship with Carol, earning a groan from her. Everyone except for Carol is immersed in Ezekiel’s poetic proclamation of love for her when a baby’s cry catches Maggie and Gloria’s attention.
“That’s Hershel,” Maggie says, instinctually heading towards the nursery, then a second cry can be heard.
“And he woke Sophia...” Gloria sighs as she follows Maggie into the nursery.
---
A few months have passed since Sohia was born. She is now able to sit up with some assistance as she plays in the nursery with Hershel beside her. Gloria sits on the other side of her in case Sophia loses her balance and falls. Maggie comes into the nursery with two bottles of formula and sits down on the ground beside her son.
“Here,” Maggie says, handing a bottle to Gloria, “just so they don’t whine when they’re hungry.”
She chuckles and nods, “thanks, we both know how impatient these two can get.”
Maggie smiles and hums in agreement as they watch their children. Hershel and Sophia were both busy playing with the toys in front of them. As the two of them reach for the same toy, Hershel reaches it first but lets go of it when Sophia grabs it and lets out a small whimper when she isn’t able to get it. Hershel watches her as she giggles when she is able to get the toy then he gently reaches over to her and pats her head. The sight of brotherly affection brings tears to Gloria’s eyes as Maggie smiles in awe at the two.
“Did you see that?” Maggie says, her voice full of delight.
Gloria nods, sniffling slightly as she tries to hold in her tears, “Yeah...”
Maggie looks over and her brows furrow in concern, “Gloria... what’s wrong? Talk to me.”
“Nothing... he just reminds me so much of Glenn...” she says with a soft tearful smile.
“There’s more to it than that,” Maggie reaches her hand out and holds Gloria’s, “there’s been something bothering you even before the war ended, don’t think I didn’t notice.”
Gloria looks at Maggie and sighs deeply, “I disappointed Glenn...”
Maggie frowns at this, “what makes you say that?”
“I let revenge, hate, and anger get to me, I killed a lot of people-” Gloria is cut off by Maggie.
“We were fighting a war, what did you expect?,” Maggie tells her.
“I became a cold hearted killer, Maggie...” Gloria lets out a breath, “I killed a lot of people on my own because I wanted all of the Saviors to die to avenge Glenn. I wanted them all dead so I did what I thought was right, I thought they were all bad people... but now I see they can be people we can even trust, like Alden, Laura... what if I killed people who didn’t deserve to die?”
“That’s the unfortunate thing about a war, people die. A lot of people die, even those who don’t deserve it, you were protecting what was yours, taking back what belongs to you. You did what you had to do.” Maggie tries to comfort her.
“What if I didn’t have to kill all those people? What if I only thought it was what I had to do because I was blinded by rage? What if I made the wrong choices?” Gloria says as a tear rolls down her cheek.
“Then you admit that you made a mistake,” Maggie reaches out and wipes the tear away, “admit that you made a mistake then fix it.”
“How? I killed a lot of people, Maggie... how do I fix that?” Gloria asks.
Maggie ponders for a moment then smiles softly, “do you remember back at the farm when I was mad at Glenn for telling everyone about the walkers in the barn?”
“How could I forget? You egged him.” Gloria says with a slight chuckle.
Maggie chuckles and nods, “I did, but then afterwards, you came up to me and gave me good reasons to give him a chance to explain himself. Did he ever tell you what he said to me?”
Gloria shakes her head, “he didn’t, and I never thought it was my business to ask.”
“He told me that he knows he screwed everything up with me by telling everyone about the barn, and that he knows there’s no going back in time to undo it, but he believes that he can make up for it by doing the right thing.” Maggie explains.
“That is such a Glenn thing to say...” Gloria chuckles, “do the right thing... how do I know what’s the right thing to even do?”
“I asked him the same thing when he said it, and can you guess what he said to me?” Maggie says.
Gloria ponders for a moment, “that his heart would know.”
Maggie widens her eyes in awe, not expecting Gloria to actually be able to guess, then smiles and nods, “exactly.”
Gloria smiles at Maggie then she looks at Hershel and Sophia as they share toys with each other. Sophia coos at Hershel as she hands him a building block and Hershel responds with a babble. Gloria’s heart had her answer, she’d start by properly raising Sophia and protecting her, making sure that she would know the right choices to make. That’s only the start but that’s how she would be able to make it up to Glenn.
---
“Hey, she’s almost a year old,” Gloria says over her shoulder as she sits on the bed with a notebook propped open.
“Already?” Daryl responds, sitting on the bed and leaning on the headboard with Sophia bouncing in his lap, “you’re growin’ so fast.”
“Mhm, today’s day three hundred and fifty,” Gloria says as she writes the number on the top of the page.
She’d been keeping a journal since the day that Sophia was born. Gloria wanted to be able to keep track of her daughter’s daily progression, and to make sure she didn’t lose track of her birthday; if the adults weren’t able to have a birthday, at least her daughter would be able to have one.
Sophia lets out a babble and points to Daryl’s face then begins to giggle. He raises his eyebrow at this and playfully eyes her.
“I think she’s laughin’ at me,” he says, earning a chuckle from Gloria, “are ya laughin’ at me? Huh? Ya laughin’ at yer dad?”
“Dada!” Sophia squeals.
Daryl freezes in place as Gloria snaps her head back to look at the two, “did she just... call you Dada?”
“I dunno...” he says in a whisper as he stares at her.
Gloria puts the book on the nightstand beside the bed then moves to sit beside Daryl, “Sophia, did you say Dada? Can you say that again?”
Sophia looks at her mom and blinks, letting out a few incoherent babbles. Gloria remembers that Harlan told her babies tend to babble things that sound like mommy or daddy when they’re around Sophia’s age but they might not have any recognition of what those sounds mean. She decides to test it; she waves her hand in front of Sophia to get her attention then points to Daryl.
“Dada!” she says again.
“You’re her first word!” Gloria exclaims happily.
Daryl grins and leans down to kiss her forehead, “knew ya were a daddy’s girl.”
“Don’t ruin the moment,” Gloria rolls her eyes playfully.
He chuckles then leans back as Sophia decides that she’s going to plop on Daryl and snuggle him, “Dada.”
Gloria smiles at the sight and kisses the top of Sophia’s head then moves up to kiss Daryl’s cheek. She adjusts herself so that she’s lying down beside him.
“I guess this is how you’re sleeping tonight?” Gloria says as she sees Sophia closing her eyes.
“Guess so.” Daryl says softly then carefully moves his arm to wrap around Gloria, pulling her close to him.
For the last two and a half years, life had been hectic for Daryl and Gloria to say the least. The outbreak that caused the end of the world was a blessing in disguise as they had only found each other after the world ended. Many would and have considered them an unpredictable couple, but together they fought through the odds. Whether it was fighting the walkers or the people who turned into monsters because of the outbreak, they would get through all of it together. They belong together. They are fated to be together.

Chapter 1: Truth
The night was off to a slow start since you and Daryl had taken watch. The sound of the chain link fence rattling in the wind served as a pendulum in the back of your mind. A chill in the late summer air made the concrete you used as a backrest cool to the touch. Both of you sat against the base of the watchtower on lookout, since the two with the regular shift were on a run.
“Know any games to play to stay awake?” You asked, slumped against a wall, and turning to look at Daryl, who was sitting cross legged, head rested in his hands.
“No,” he replied, “should get some cards or somethin’.”
“Yeah, next time we go into town.”
The night had become dark, no moonlight deciphered the sky from the inside of your eyelids. Time ticked on and before you knew it both of you had fallen asleep.
The rattle of the fence shocked you out of your sleep, and you saw an arm reaching through the fence trying to grab at you. Although a decent distance away, you could still see it’s skin peeled back up to it’s bicep; raw meat dangling behind the wires, so it could fit the exposed bone deeper through the fence.
The growling must have woken Daryl up, because by the time you were standing to go and kill the bloody thing, he had handed you his knife to use. You took it graciously and tiredly walked over to kill it, looking much like a zombie yourself.
Stabbing it through the eye, you could feel the pop of penetration to the skull, and with that it fell to the ground dead, fully dead. With all of its weight moving downwards, the force must have been too much, causing it’s limb to stay on the side of the fence opposite to it’s corpse. You hoped backwards as the appendage reached for your ankle, then shriveled up like the rest of its body.
Returning to your space adjacent to Daryl, you handed his knife back, and sat down breathing heavily.
“You rest, I won’t go back to sleep,” he said leaning on his hip to pull his red rag out from his back pocket. The knife you had used was laying on the ground next to him, beaded with blood.
“No way I’m getting back to sleep, I can hear my blood pounding in my ears.”
“Tell me if you need ta though, ‘cause I’m good,” He said, reassuring you.
You just shook your head and leaned against the wall, propping yourself up with a gun by your side.
You rolled your shoulders back every once in a while to stretch your back. Daryl mindlessly fiddled with a rock that he picked up off the ground. The sky was now dark and all of the stars in the night could be seen. Nothing like this would have ever been possible before. As the stars moved and passed with the coming hours, your tiredness from before seemed to return.
Neither of you had spoken in quite some time, which wasn't weird for you now that you have been taking shifts with Daryl for sometime. At first it was weird doing nothing with him, it was like he wasn't comfortable enough with you to converse, but now you know it's quite the opposite. You guys can communicate by means other than just talking. However, silence needed to be broken if you were going to keep him company until sunrise.
“I miss coffee,” you broke silence, plucking some grass and throwing it past your outstretched feet.
“Huh,” he snickered.
"I don't think I appreciated it before, I don't even remember drinking it that often."
"Don't even remember the last time I had it." He said and spun the little shiny rock he had in his grasp.
“I do,” you said.
He readjusted his position to be facing you holding his knees up to his chest with his chin rested on top. His head tilted down, but his eyes looked up at you to continue.
"Was a date, or not a date, but a meeting. I was out at a cafe, with the TA, for the psych class I was in. And he ordered for us, and after I explicitly told him to get almond milk, he didn't."
"Why?" Daryl asked with conviction.
"Because I'm lactose intolerant and I had to kick him out that night because my stomach hurt so bad." You picked a few sticks up from the ground and broke them into tiny pieces. The stick sprinkled across the ground, and disappeared in the surrounding weeds.
"Didn't mean why are you lactose intolerant, I meant why didn’t he get ya what ya wanted?" He furrowed his brow for a second.
“I don’t know, never thought about it, maybe he’d just forgotten or something. Doesn’t matter, he wasn’t even that good in bed.”
Daryl threw his special rock in the air and caught it swiftly. For just a second it had sparkled in the air, before he held it in his fist like he would never let it go.
“I bet you’ve been on bad dates, too.”
“Nah,” He said and threw his rock across the land and wrapped both his arms around his legs.
“What!? Okay, I guess your fucking perfect,” you said scoffing in a half joking manner.
“No, just didn’t go with too many people.” He mumbled.
“And all of them just happened to be great?” You questioned.
“Never said that,” He tucked his chin under his arms, that still rested on his knees, “I never went on any good ones neither.”
“It’s kinda hard to believe you didn’t date much, I mean, look at you,” you joked, but also couldn’t deny the genuine admiration that he evoked from the people that surrounded him.
“Nah, forget I ever said anythin’. Let’s just go back to sittin’ here.” He turned his head to the side in which the sun would eventually rise.
“No, please, I just came up with a game idea,” you begged.
“Hmm?” He glanced over.
“Truth or dare!” You exclaimed, failing your attempt of hiding your excitement.
“Nuh uh. Not subjecting myself to that shit,” he said tersely.
“Come on, I wanna know about these dates you didn’t go on, and you could dare me to do stupid shit in the mean time,” you said with your shoulders sagging.
“Ain’t gonna ask you nothin’,” he said stubbornly.
“Okay, then it’ll be one-sided truth.” You had as much enthusiasm as a little girl at a sleepover as you asked, “Truth or da…”
“Fine.”
“Okay, when was the last time you got drunk?” you started him off easy.
“Uh… CDC.”
“Wait, the CDC? Like the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta? How have I not heard about this before?” You asked. If this was the easy question, then this game may be more fun than you had previously thought.
“Yeah, stopped there, it’s gone now though,” he said nonchalantly.
“It’s gone? You would think it’d be better guarded or something.” You were astonished by the first question, and immediately got excited for the night to come.
“Blew up. My turn,” he said and pondered for a second, resting his chin on his palms like a winsome child. “What was his name?”
“Who’s name?” You wondered if this was what he was wasting his first question on.
“Coffee date guy,” he raised his eyebrows ever so slightly.
“I don’t remember,” you shrugged.
“That ain’t how this game works,” he argued back with a pout.
“Okay fine, I think his name was Bryce,” you gave up.
“‘S a douchey name.”
“He was a douche… probably dead now.” You looked down at the weeds growing, plucking a few and tying them together, waiting for someone to speak. You looked over at Daryl, who was patiently waiting for his question. He actually looked like he wasn't completely hating this game.
You thought for a minute, wondering how you could crack the boy in front of you. After some thought you said, “What was your first date like?” It was the perfect question, because really you could not imagine what he’d say.
“I told you, never did that type of thing.” He brought his thumb up to his mouth and started rubbing his lip as he talked.
“Okay then, who was the first person you ever did anything romantic with?” you asked.
“‘S not romantic, but there was this one girl that Merle’d bring out drinking with us sometimes. Name was Candy or something.” He mumbled around his thumb.
“Aww, little 20 something Daryl going out with a girl named Candy,” you teased.
“Wasn’t 20, I musta been ‘bout 13 or 14,” he recalled.
“I thought you said you’d go out drinking together?”
“Yeah, we’d go to this bowling alley, ‘cause they don’t card, and they had a pool table and a back room, I used to pay Merle t’ get me drinks.”
“He have to buy her drinks too?” You questioned.
“Nah, she was ‘bout his age I think, and he’d never buy something for someone else,'' he looked off.
“Wait, she was his age, and they let you drink when you were just a kid?” You tried not to chide.
“Hey, ain’t it supposed to be my turn?”
“Sorry,” you stopped.
“You said you were in a psych class, was that what you were gonna be?” He looked interested, as he inquired, studying your face as he awaited your response.
You explained “That’s what I went to school for, but who knows, I minored in fine arts. Truth is I hated psychology, but my parents needed me to make money for myself, otherwise I could have lived happily as a broke artist. Doesn’t really matter now though,” you trailed off. “Speaking of, what were your parents like?”
“Mean, drunk, dead.” He put it bluntly.
"I'm sorry, I didn’t know. How old were you?"
"With my mom, I’s 9. I was out playing with kids from around where I lived. They were all on bikes and wanted to chase this fire engine trying to see somethin’ exciting. I ran behind, and when I caught up I realized it was my house that was on fire. My mom had been smoking in bed."
"I'm really sorry about that, I didn't know about your mom or anything." You looked at him genuinely, giving a sympathetic smile.
"Was a long time ago,” he shrugged off. “Now for you. What art did you do?"
“I drew, painted, took pictures, everything really.” You added kindly.
He tilted his head back until it hit the wall, he stretched out his legs, and looked up at the stars as he said, “I’ll have to see that sometime.” “It’s not like I still have any of them,” you said, perplexed at his interest.
“Oooh, who was your celebrity crush as a kid,” you asked, “like who did you have posters of above your bed?” “Ya’ know Blondie,” he looked over to get your reaction. As he saw you nod, he said “Yeah, had a Debbie Harry poster, ripped out from a magazine.”
You laughed, and the questions continued; some questions resulted in stories others sat in stillness. The morning was short to come as the warm glow of the sun peered over the trees, and chirping birds made themselves present.
“Okay, what was your first time like?” you pestered.
You were met with a second of awkward silence, before he stumbled over the phrases “ I never, I mean… I did, it wasn’t like that though.” He brought his thumb up to his mouth again.
“Are you trying to tell me that you’re a…” he dipped his head down, and looked up at you through his hair. A sickly puppy could make your heart hurt any more, so you danced around your initial wording and asked “uhh, inexperienced?”
“Morning!” sang through the fields, and Daryl had been saved by the bell. Carol stood alongside Carl to take over for the morning shift, and relieve Daryl of his painted flush. She extended her hand out first to you, helping you up. Then to Daryl, letting the hand holding linger as she instructed for you guys to go get some rest.
The walk up was silent, but just before parting you joked with him “If you ever need some more experience, you know where my cell is.” You had said it quiet enough where he could ignore it, but you knew he heard it, because he silently split, seconds after you said it.

keep me in mind
for @omgcpanniversaryweek day 5: updates/extras/arcs
i was thinking about how much money i would personally pay ngozi to release any more information about what happened in madison and it made me want to post something i’ve been playing around with since i first read the comic! a love letter to sunshine boys, my home state of georgia, and jack “knock knock who’s there oh shit it’s my feelings” zimmermann.
this is inspired by all the writers who have tackled summer in madison (one of my favorite zimbits eras to read about in fic; it’s about the yearning!!!) and especially by @parvuls, whose fic right as things grow i reread about once a week.
They’re doing a cool eighty-five miles an hour down Interstate 20, which is a pretty inconvenient time for Jack to realize that he is just insanely turned on by watching Bitty drive.
He can’t quite pin down what’s driving him crazy. Maybe it’s the way Bitty’s hair catches the midmorning light and turns to gold. Maybe it’s the deep tan, the freckles that are sprinkled over the tops of his shoulders and the bridge of his nose. Maybe it’s the warmth Jack can feel radiating off his sun-heated skin, the muscles standing out in his forearms, the way the corner of his mouth turns up gently at Jack every time they make eye contact in the rearview mirror.
Or maybe it’s the way he sings with joyful abandon, voice soaring out the windows of his beat-up blue Chevy truck. Bitty’s always had a pleasant voice, strong and high and clear, that’s familiar to anyone who’s ever stepped foot in the Haus. Here, though, it’s a little rougher, a lot more country. He’s clearly in his element, keeping steady time with the palms of his hands on the truck’s steering wheel.
Speaking of Bitty’s hands, Jack can’t stop looking at them. They seem to be everywhere: turning the radio up, making sure Jack’s comfortable with the A/C, changing gears in a way that speaks to years of practice driving stick shifts. Jack, who’s never driven anything but an automatic, resolves to ask Bitty for a lesson sometime… just in case.
(It’s definitely not because he’s a little too interested in the way Bitty’s long, sure fingers flex against the gear shift. Or the way his thighs tense and then relax when he pops the clutch. Nope, definitely not.)
Georgia suits Bitty, Jack thinks to himself. He’s beyond beautiful here, lit up from the inside, like he’s captured a little of the blazing sunshine overhead to keep all for himself. The heat of the day has settled over the two of them, smothering Jack’s racing thoughts about all the ways today could potentially go wrong. He suddenly finds he can’t bring himself to worry much about anything when he’s got the chance to just sit back and observe Bitty on his home turf.
They don’t talk much for the first few miles out past the airport—mostly just You doin’ okay? and Yeah, I’m good, Bittle, and then a largely companionable silence. There’s definitely a sense that what lies unsaid between them might currently be too big for the cab of this truck, roomy though it might be, and Jack spends probably too long working through ways to organically bring up the topic. But as they leave 285 and the Atlanta skyline behind for the long, straight stretch of I-20 ahead of them, Bitty reaches over and casually covers one of Jack’s hands with his own.
“I’m real glad you’re here, Jack,” he says, soft, a little tentative. Even though Bitty’s got his eyes fixed on the road, Jack can tell there’s light in them; he thrills at the thought of maybe having put it there. “It means a lot to me that you came.”
Jack curls his fingers around Bitty’s, hoping to God that his palms aren’t too sweaty. He’s gratified when Bitty glances over and smiles at him. “Wouldn’t have missed it. I really wanted to see you. And your parents were so nice to invite me.”
Bitty laughs brightly. Joy, simple and uncomplicated, begins unspooling itself in Jack’s chest, where he’s kept it close to his heart through a whole summer of texting and calling and wanting. He can’t believe he gets to do this, gets to have this. He just has to be brave enough to try.
He looks at Bitty, at home here in the summer sun, and thinks that maybe, just maybe, he can be.
“Oh, honey,” Bitty is saying, oblivious to Jack’s thoughts, “I don’t know if nice sums it up. I thought my mama was gonna kill me if I didn’t make good on my promise and get you down here somehow. She’s been dyin’ to see you—not to mention cook for you—for weeks. Coach, too, I think, but at least he’s a little less threatening about it. Also, I’m thinkin’ we gotta try to get you sayin’ y’all by the end of this weekend, it’s so much more efficient—”
Jack could listen to Bitty talk all day. He likes the way his accent compresses some words but elongates the vowels, turning his sentences into an easy drawl. The accent’s pretty strong at Samwell, but here it almost sounds like he’s speaking a different language entirely.
He wants to feel Bitty’s lips forming those sounds against his own, wonders if it’ll feel as soft and comforting as it is to listen to. He’s so caught up in how attracted he is to the sound of that voice, in fact, that he almost doesn’t realize Bitty is still talking to him.
“...and then I told my Aunt Judy that that poor boy’s cornbread just ain’t quite done in the middle, bless him, and that he should just put those silly fears aside so he can come on over and meet you while you’re here because I really don’t think you’re as scary as you pretend to be, anyway, and—oh, Jack, I’m so sorry, I’m prattlin’ on and you haven’t even met none of these folks yet! Am I boring you?”
“No!” Jack says immediately, and maybe it’s a little blunt but he doesn’t know how to soften his next words so he just plows ahead. “I just, um. Uh. Was thinking about how I’d really like to kiss you right now.”
Bitty pauses—blinks—presses one freckled hand over his mouth—and then smiles impossibly wide, and, well, that’s about it for Jack’s heart. He thinks it shouldn’t be possible for the human body to contain so much joy, but both of them are sitting there and Bitty’s eyes are sparkling when they meet Jack’s in the rearview mirror and the happiness fizzing up through Jack’s ribcage simply can’t be stopped.
“That can probably be arranged, Mr. Zimmermann, if you can control yourself long enough for me to get off this highway.”
Jack, adrenaline thrilling in his chest, nevertheless makes a show of clasping his hands firmly in his lap.
“I’m on my best behavior, promise,” he says solemnly.
“You are the limit, Jack Laurent,” Bitty says, but he reaches over again and takes one of Jack’s hands and squeezes, hard. An acknowledgment, a promise, a choice. This is something. We have something precious here.
Jack squeezes back, looking out the window, trying to spot the exit sign that will get them off this highway and on to whatever else this weekend has in store.

The bell rings shortly past four o’clock, and Addie buzzes their guest in with a smile on her face. Marianne peeks from the kitchen, leaning over the corner, strands of her hair falling from underneath the headband-bun combo she’s sporting for the cooking.
  ‘Is it the celebrity judge?’
‘Sure is a judge,’ Addie says, unlocking the door. ‘Not so sure he’d like the celebrity title.’
The door opens and reveals a smiling Drew, in his usual attire – a simple grey tee with a Queen logo on it, black jeans, and a baseball cap. Greetings are exchanged, and then Drew’s taking his shoes off as Addie warns him that maybe Marianne might be a bit much today. There’s a casual whiff of cologne that Addie catches – it’s similar to Holden’s minty one, but simpler.
‘You ready to munch on some British-French-American-Hungarian goulash?’
He raises an eyebrow. ‘Is anyone ever ready for that?’
‘Nope. But Marianne has just called you the celebrity judge of her nonexistent cooking show, so you’ve got no choice but to be ready.’
‘Fair,’ he says, just as Marianne shouts from the kitchen, ‘I’ll have my cooking show soon!’
The self-proclaimed chef pops out of the kitchen, wielding a spatula covered in a dark red, thick liquid. Her red-and-white apron is tied haphazardly around her waist; both the apron and the sweatpants have already become victims to her cooking, and the bun seems to be getting looser by the minute. Marianne flashes the two a massive grin, one finger pointed at Drew.
  ‘Drew!’
  ‘Marianne!’
Her grin widens so much Addie’s worried it’ll rip her cheeks. She wiggles her finger, then, in a come here motion. ‘I need your goulash expertise, stat.’
‘Give the man a moment to breathe,’ says Addie. Next to her, Drew chuckles.
‘Do you want to enjoy the goulash?’
  ‘Yes?’
‘Then let the ones who can make it good do it and stay out of it.’ Marianne crosses her arms over her chest, and a drop of liquid falls off the spatula. She doesn’t even notice. ‘Drew?’
  ‘Coming right up, boss.’
With a pat on the back from Addie, Drew departs into the kitchen. Marianne is already listing off all the things that she’s put in the goulash, how she’s done it so far, and how the internet has told her needs to be done from now on. Addie tunes most of it out – while she thinks Marianne is one of the best cooks she’s ever met, after living with her for over a year, some things you can’t help but get used to and eventually, get a little bit tired of. She’s happy there’s Drew, though, because he’s either very interested in Marianne’s process and amused by her telling of it, or very good at pretending to be so.
Addie grabs a rather small box with a pink bow on it out of the hallway drawer, right next to a grey envelope, then makes her way to the stack of French books lying underneath the TV. The newest copy of a first-edition of The Unbearable Lightness of Being in French is lying on top of a photo album, the same one that Addie told Drew stories from the last time he was over here. She tucks it under her arm and brings it to the kitchen, which has a prominent smell of Marianne’s cooking – a lot of spices, some of them even scattered around with powder spilling out at the edges, and wine that’s both a part of the dish and accompanying Marianne and whoever’s keeping her company. This time it’s Drew, so instead of wine, there’s a can of White Claw in his hands. Addie chuckles to herself.
Marianne, huddled over the steaming pot, motions for Addie to come closer without looking. ‘How does this smell?’
‘I don’t know how a goulash is supposed to smell.’
‘Like that,’ Drew answers. ‘Stop worrying so much.’
‘If it can be better, I’ll make it better,’ replies Marianne, then asks him to contribute with some spices and then stir it. ‘If it goes badly, you made it. If it’s great, I made it.’
Drew laughed. It was a big kind of laugh, the one that fills out the entire room. Taking a seat at their modest dining table, Addie realised it’s been a while since anyone other than the two of them laughed so freely in this place. (That just made her miserable; she needs to stop focusing so much on work and her studies if she wants to retain a semblance of a social life.) She puts the album down, and places the box right underneath it – just enough to be noticeable.
‘Addie, you didn’t tell me your roommate is basically the female equivalent to Gordon Ramsay.’ Drew’s leaning against one of the cupboards, sipping his drink with a smile. Marianne elbows him in the shoulder, frowning.
‘The kids one, maybe. I don’t swear, that’s Addie’s job. She’s the sailor.’
‘Bitch,’ says Addie under her breath, feeling warmth creeping up into her cheeks as she smiles. ‘Calling me out like that.’
Marianne doesn’t look at her, but Addie hears her quiet giggle. ‘That’s a quarter.’
Addie sighs, and Drew lets out a chuckle that sounds a lot like oh. He probably figured out what the jar filled up with quarters is, and Addie thinks he’s finding it a little too amusing, so she says, ‘Don’t laugh.’
  Of course, it doesn’t work.
‘That’s kind of funny, you’ve got to admit.’
  ‘No.’
He raises his eyebrows at her, not even trying to hide the smile. Addie calls him to look at the albums, after she places a quarter in the jar, because she can feel Marianne is about to side with him and go on a tirade where she makes fun of Addie’s bad habit – not that she minds, really, but she’d much rather see what Drew thinks of the photographs and his birthday present.
It ends up taking him a long time to notice it, which starts driving Addie nuts, but she wants him to be the one to notice it, because… Well. She doesn’t really have a reason.
They go through the photographs and Marianne is hovering over Drew’s shoulder, nearly dripping the goulash a few times onto the album, until Addie tells her that her goulash is burning (it isn’t) and she finally leaves the spatula where it belongs, before coming back to look. She likes the photos, and so does Drew – Addie had most of them developed, both from Waystone and the park they were in. Most of them were of the places, but there were a few of Drew. They weren’t the best quality, but his face was relaxed in them, and he was smiling with a playful glint in his eyes, and Addie liked them more than the ones where he looked like he was posing. (She developed those, too, but still hasn’t quite figured out where to put them. She’ll probably give them to him.) Good memories were made that day, and friendships cemented, too.
When he finally notices the box, his eyebrows shoot up. ‘Is this the present?’
Addie just nods and waits. She’s thankful that Marianne is humming along to the music while she stirs the pot, because it means that there’s no awkward silence while he carefully unwraps the bow, as if it would break if he tugged on it too hard. He opens it, finally, and laughs – Addie feels like he’s been laughing a lot more recently.
He holds the present in his hand, shaking his head. ‘A phone case. Really?’
‘Yep.’ Addie grins so hard she bites a little on the inside of her lip; what if he doesn’t like it? She pushes the thought away. ‘Can’t have us swapping our phones again.’
‘True. Although, it did end up in a pretty good thing.’
  ‘I guess it did, yeah.’
There’s a moment where they’re just staring at the phone case, as if it is about to start talking. Addie kind of wishes it would, and once again feels thankful for Marianne’s music. She doesn’t want to start reminiscing, but that’s where her brain is going, and suddenly she finds herself thinking about that summer morning where she was hungover and half-asleep when she met him and it feels weird that it’s been nearly six months since that. It feels like it was yesterday, but it feels like Drew’s always been around.
‘Mr. White Claw,’ he reads off the back of the matt case, amused. Addie’s pretty proud of herself for that one.
‘Nothing describes you better than that, basic white bitch.’ She smiles at him, and kicks him under the table so he’d look at her. ‘Happy birthday, dude.’
‘Thanks.’ He raises his can and waits until she raises hers, then says, ‘To swapping phones.’
Addie clinks the can against his. ‘And making friends.’
‘And putting another quarter in the jar. Don’t think I didn’t hear that.’
  ‘Marianne.’
‘Nu-uh.’ Marianne snaps her fingers, pointing first at Addie as she speaks, then Drew. ‘You, quarter in the jar, and now that the ceremony’s over, I need you back at the cooking station. The goulash ain’t gonna cook itself, mec.’
As Marianne says, the other two do. Addie is honestly just grateful she doesn’t have to be the one helping out in the kitchen, because as much as she enjoys cooking, Marianne’ demands get on her nerves sometimes. That, and Drew is actually enjoying helping her out. Addie gets to sit back and relax, listen to her friends make food and bond over the dishes they can make—turns out Drew is incredible at making his mum’s casserole recipe, and promises to bring it over someday—and she feels like she’s come a long way from being holed up in her room, studying and working. Even if sometimes it feels like nothing’s changed.
In between helping Marianne, Drew puts the phone case in its rightful place. It’s a bit cheesy, but Addie likes the thought that there’ll be a reminder of their friendship with him at all times, if he likes it as much as she thinks he does. It’s a bit silly, too. Addie likes giving and receiving presents that are more silly than useful, which is probably not the savvy and mature way to approach life.
Time wears on, and Addie includes herself every now and then, mostly just chilling on her phone as the two work towards what they claim is going to be a masterpiece. She highly doubts it, and it’s amusing whenever she voices her opinion and they try to argue otherwise. She likes to see them getting along – she’d never admit it, but as much as she knows and loves Marianne, a part of her was still scared he’d get the celebrity treatment. Now, she watches as Marianne threatens to throw goulash if he doesn’t cut the pepper faster, and she can only laugh.
Her phone chimes and there’s a text message displayed over Holden and Addie’s faces –  a picture taken barely a week ago. They look happy together, and seeing it brings a smile to her face. As Addie texts back, Marianne ushers Drew away from the pot, finally taking over. Drew joins her at the table with a can of White Claw and a can of Heineken.
She puts her phone down and takes the Heineken with thanks. ‘Cooking time over?’
Drew nods. ‘The chef fired me. I think.’
‘Yeah,’ Addie laughs, ‘the chef tends to do that.’
To prove a point, Marianne gives them the finger, and says a whole sentence in French out of which Addie can only understand ‘merde’, and that is mostly because she turns around for that word, glaring at the two. Drew nearly chokes on his drink, and Addie just shrugs, because it’s Marianne, and no one can really understand Marianne. A conversation starts about photography and how Drew did mean to bring the camera, but he left it with Chase and Madelyn when he was visiting, and he ends up telling them stories from all the sets he’s been on.
When the bell chimes again, he’s the first one to notice, as he’s sitting not even a foot from the entrance into the kitchen. ‘Someone ringing?’
  ‘Oh, god, I forgot— Thanks!’
Addie makes a beeline for the hallway, giving her friends a quick ‘one moment!’ in lieu of an explanation. She’s at the front door within seconds and opens it with a smile, greeting her boyfriend with a hug, and a kiss on the cheek.
Holden chuckles, and then he’s giving her a brief kiss on the lips before they part. ‘Hello there. You had a bit to drink?’
‘A little,’ Addie says, feeling the heat in her cheeks. ‘I’m glad you stopped by.’
‘Me too.’ His hand falls from her waist and he takes a step back, looking around. ‘You’ve got the papers?’
Addie reaches into the drawer and takes the grey folder out of it, but doesn’t give it to him just yet. ‘I know you’re in a hurry, but Marianne is making enough goulash for a whole village, and Drew’s here, and I want to introduce you.’
‘He’s here?’ he asks, just at the same time as Marianne shouts from the kitchen, ‘WHO IS IT?’
In her defense, she thought it would’ve been a nice surprise for Holden to stop by and stick around for a little bit once he got what he came here for, and maybe chat to her friends for a few minutes. The idea might’ve been fine, but hearing Holden’s little sigh at the realisation and a guaranteed confusion from the two in the kitchen, it might’ve not been a fine surprise. This paired with Holden only meeting Marianne of her friends so far...
‘C’mon,’ she tells him, hoping to reassure herself just as much, and takes hold of his hand. ‘They don’t bite.’
Back in the kitchen, Marianne and Drew are leaning on the cupboards, both of them silent and waiting. Addie walkins into the kitchen first, and she watches their eyes follow her hand – the one which drags Holden in behind her. Marianne shouts his name and nearly leaps to hug him, while Drew remains at his spot, gnacing between the two having a quick catch-up and Addie, who tries to tell him not to worry in the form of a smile.
His eyes keep dropping back to their hands, intertwined, and she can see barely-concealed confusion on his face.
‘This is Holden,’ she says, now that Marianne isn’t hogging him anymore. ‘My boyfriend. Holden, this is Drew.’
They shake hands and exchange the ‘nice to meet you’s without anyone feeling the need to prove themselves to be the Alpha male, so Addie counts it as a win. Not that she thought either of them would do that – she just hasn’t seen Drew interact with anyone who wasn’t her or Marianne, and Drew is, after Marianne, the first person from Addie’s life Holden has gotten to meet.
The more she thinks of it, the more she realises how risky it was.
  ‘You’re the actor Drew, right?’
For a moment, Addie just watches Drew – his hands are crossed on his chest and he looks a little menacing, now that she tries to see him from Holden’s perspective. Tall and pretty attractive, pretty relaxed in a place he’s barely been to, and with the reputation of a successful actor – and to top it all off, a resting bitch face.
  Addie’s heart skips a beat.
Drew laughs and she feels relief wash over her, instead. ‘Is that how she presents me to people?’
‘Drew, it’s literally how we met,’ she says, rolling her eyes at him from across the room. ‘How else am I supposed to explain how I know you?’
  ‘Fair.’
There’s a moment where the sizzling of the goulash is all that can be heard, but Addie doesn’t think it’s one of those heavy silences, where every person seems like they’re holding their breath. She takes it as a good sign.
Holden pats his thigh, then, and he has an apologetic face when he says, ‘I’ve got to go. Work won’t wait forever.’ He flashes Drew a smile. ‘Nice meeting you, Drew.’
  ‘You too.’
Addie sighs. ‘You just got here.’
He opens his mouth to say something, but Marianne is quicker: ‘You try this goulash, look me in the eye, and say you don’t want more of it.’ There’s no and then you can go, because Addie has a feeling Marianne knows pretty well just how good the goulash is.
She commands the room as she approaches Holden with the tiniest bit of goulash steaming from the spatula over her hand. Her eyes are determined and there’s a crook in the corner of her lips – the sly kind of smile when she knows she’s already won. Holden doesn’t get a chance to protest, because the spatula is headed for him, and he’s got nothing to do but take it.
The room holds a breath. Even Drew is looking at Holden in expectation, chin resting on the palm of his hand.
For a bit, Holden just coughs and complains about the hotness (Marianne argued he had to have been blind to not see that it was steaming). Once he’s finally back to normal breathing and side-eyeing Addie for giggling at him, he tells Marianne it’s one of the best things he’s ever tasted.
Addie could swear she could see pride and self-satisfaction through Marianne’s eyes.
‘Now that Holden is staying,’ says Addie, ‘can the rest of us have some, too?’
‘Yes, ma’am,’ replies Marianne, with a newfound spring in her step, grace in the way she moves. Drew laughs at her, quietly, and Addie finds herself laughing with him.
Marianne brings out the goulash and Addie helps pour it into the bowls, handing each of them one. The chef ends up taking Addie’s chair, on Addie’s insistence, because what does she deserve after all these hours other than enjoying her efforts in peace? So Addie leans on the counter, ignoring Marianne’s protests that it’s dirty (‘These shorts need to go into the wash anyway’) and savours the food. It’s unbelievably good – Drew even comments at one point that it’s as good as the one his Hungarian neighbour made, if not better. Marianne glows after each compliment, so Addie doesn’t really stop giving them. Even as the conversation goes on, and Holden stays a little longer than planned, they keep sprinkling in nice comments about the goulash whenever they can.
Addie’s glad Holden and Drew are here for this, however unplanned it was.
Holden slaps his thigh again, in the very same manner with the very same look on his face and this time, Addie catches herself right before she laughs. ‘I’ve really got to go now,’ he says, getting to his feet. ‘Work calls.’
He walks up to Addie and she smiles at him, elbowing him gently in the ribs. ‘That’s okay, Mr. Workaholic. We understand.’
She thinks maybe she’s pushing it, but Holden smiles and reaches the other side of her waist, tickling just enough so that she groans for him to stop. ‘You’ve got it just as bad as I do,’ he tells her, and she can’t argue.
‘Wait, Holden.’ Marianne twirls her spoon in front of her space, brow furrowed, and a distant look on her face. ‘Can I ask you lot a personal question?’
  ‘Marianne—’
‘Don’t worry about it, Addie. I won’t bother them too much.’
Marianne does give her a reassuring smile, or what’s meant to be one, because Addie doesn’t feel particularly reassured. The girl, for all the love Addie holds for her, really has a thing for pushing the limits and boundaries without meaning to. Addie sinks into herself, arms crossed on her chest with Holden’s hand still resting on her waist, and hopes Marianne picks her approach carefully. Addie might know her well enough, but Drew and Holden don’t.
‘Sure,’ says Drew, leaning back in his chair. ‘What is it?’
Instead of responding, he looks at Holden until he agrees to it, too. She takes a deep breath, then, and gives them the shaky kind of confident smile as her fingers fix up her bun. ‘How important are romantic things in a relationship to guys?’
Addie resists dropping her head in her hands. She just sighs. Glares a little.
  Lets it all unfold.
The hand on Addie’s waist moves a little, with no purpose. She can hear Holden breathe more deeply, as he always does when he’s trying to crack a problem. Drew, on the other hand, frowns; his eyes stare out of the window, the distance noticeable in them. Part of Addie wishes the question was never asked – part of it is as glad that it wasn’t bad as it is honest that maybe, Addie is curious about the answers, too.
‘Probably shouldn’t ask Holden that while Addie’s around,’ jokes Drew.
  ‘Ha-ha. Very funny.’
Drew looks at her and shrugs, a smile peeking through. (Addie found it a little bit funny and he can see it.) He sighs a little and scratches the place above his eyebrow, glancing at Marianne. ‘What kind of romantic things are we talking about?’
‘I don’t know.’ Marianne waves her hand in a vague motion, then lets it go back to fiddling with the bun. ‘Um, dates, quality time together, gifts or flowers or whatever, that romantic sappy kind of shite.’
‘It depends, then,’ Holden says, voice deep and laced in thought, just as Drew speaks with confidence, ‘Very important.’
Drew chuckles and Holden smiles, too, but Marianne doesn’t look very reassured, so Drew leans forward in the chair, placing his elbows on the table with his hands crossed. ‘Look, it depends on the guy, yeah, but most guys like the romantic stuff. Going on dates, getting flowers and chocolates, candlelit dinners and just spending quality time together is a big deal. Not having that is just kind of… I don’t know.’
Marianne nods. She’s looking at Drew as if she were soaking his words like a sponge, and not one that likes them.
‘I don’t really agree,’ says Holden, after letting out a little ‘hmmm’ sound. ‘I mean, it really depends on the guy, but also the partner. Look at Addie and I – we spend most of our time together at work, or doing work, and it’s something we love doing so the time we spend together doing that is what we’d consider quality time, right? And you don’t— We don’t need all that romantic stuff. If you know someone likes you, there’s no need to constantly show it. If it works already.’
Addie just stares at the ground. All eyes are on her, now, even if not physically – she can just feel the attention on her. Does she agree? Yes, for the most part, and it’s not her Marianne is asking this time. They’ve already spoken about this. Marianne knows Addie enjoys the approach she and Holden have with the relationship.
When she finally looks up, she catches Drew’s eyes for a moment, and then they’re gone before she can read them. ‘Well,’ he says, ‘I guess it depends on your relationship and your boyfriend, then.’
‘My friend’s.’ Marianne nods with a smile that looks like it’s about to slip off. ‘I’m asking for a friend.’
Drew leans back. ‘Sure, yeah. I hope your friend manages to sort it out.’
Marianne thanks him, then makes a joke about the goulash being finger-licking, and within moments everything’s as if there wasn’t just a serious conversation. A little later, Addie walks Holden out, receiving a gentle kiss on the lips before he leaves. Drew sticks around for a little while longer and when Marianne invites Drew to their group’s annual Fourth of July party (very exclusive), Addie feels like it’s another unpredictable-Marianne moment she should’ve foreseen.
For better or worse, though, Drew shakes his head with a little sigh. ‘Thanks for the invitation, but I’ve already booked a flight home.’
‘Oh.’ Marianne nods, not even trying to hide her disappointment. ‘Shame. We throw the best parties around Atlanta.’
Drew chuckles, tugging his jacket sleeves over his arms. ‘I don’t doubt that for a second. I’ll catch one of them, at some point.’
  ‘Yeah. You should.’
Addie is leaning against the wall, watching them talk about their plans for the Fourth of July, and realises she’s happy that Holden’s met Drew. She’s happy he’s integrating into her friend group, at least bit by bit. It kind of makes everything more real; more permanent. Later, she finds out from Marianne that Drew messaged her, thanking her for the goulash experience. When she’s lying in bed, thinking about all the work she needs to do tomorrow because she slacked off today, a thought pops up: Marianne’s birthday is going to be soon, and that is bound to be a wholesome party.
Addie falls asleep with a smile on her face.
