ABOUT: Atillo Balintawak World Arnis-Eskrima Original Saavedra Style.
Atillo Balintawak World Arnis-Eskrima
Original Saavedra Style
Welcome to the official website of Grandmaster Crispulo “Ising” Atillo and World Atillo Balintawak Arnis – Eskrima – Original Saavedra Style! Grandmaster Atillo is a Filipino Martial Arts legend and the founder of Atillo Balintawak Eskrima – Original SaavedraStyle.
As the youngest member of the famed Balintawak Self Defense Club founded in 1952 by Venancio “Anciong” Bacon along with other legendary eskrimadors to include Delfin Lopez and his father, Vicente “Inting” Atillo.
Grandmaster Atillo is one of the most famed eskrimadors of the Philippines. He has consolidated his astonishing depth of knowledge and decades of experience into a single style of Balintawak eskrima that is based upon the hard-hitting fighting style of the legendary fighter, Teodoro “Doring” Saavedra. Grandmaster Atillo’s goal is to share his beloved art of Atillo Balintawak Eskrima – Original Saavedra Style with anyone willing to learn!
The island of Cebu in the Central Visayan islands of the Philippines is considered the home and motherland of the Filipino Martial Art of eskrima. The most prominent and influential eskrimador in the history of Cebuano eskrima was the great, Lorenzo “Tatay Ensong” Saavedra (1852 – 1944).
Saavedra founded the Labangon Fencing Club in 1921 and taught his unique style of eskrima to his nephew Teodoro “Doring” Saavedra (1911 – 1944) and Venancio “Anciong” Bacon (1912 – 1982). Saavedra later founded the famed Doce Pares Club in 1932 and continued teaching his unique style of eskrima until WWII and the Japanese invasion of Cebu on April 10, 1942. It was during this time that Teodoro “Doring” Saavedra rose through the ranks and became one of the most feared and respected eskrimadors in the Philippines. His legendary exploits and hard-hitting and aggressive style of eskrima made him an icon and legend of Cebuano eskrima.
In 1944, while serving alongside Doce Pares Club originals, Vicente “Inting” Atillo and Delfin Lopez as a Recognized Guerilla (RG) and member of Lt. Col. James Cushing’s famed “A” Company, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry, Cebu Area Command (CAC) of the United States Armed Forces Far East (USAFFE), Doring Saavedra was captured and summarily executed by the Japanese Kempeitai. Soon after, Lorenzo Saavedra died of natural causes at the age of 92.
After the war, many of the original Doce Pares Club members reunited and resumed training however the post-war club was shadowed by the deaths of Lorenzo Saavedra and Teodoro “Doring” Saavedra. Venancio “Anciong” Bacon, a student of Lorenzo Saavedra and life-long family friend and training partner of Doring Saavedra prior to the war was becoming increasingly frustrated with the politics and direction of the new club and grew progressively more disinterested in maintaining his association with the post-war Doce Pares Club. These feelings were shared by many of the original Doce Pares Club members who had been students of the Saavedras to include Delfin Lopez and Vicente “Inting” Atillo among others.
After the war, many of the original Doce Pares Club members reunited and resumed training however the post-war club was shadowed by the deaths of Lorenzo Saavedra and Teodoro “Doring” Saavedra. These feelings were shared by many of the original Doce Pares Club members who had been students of the Saavedras to include Delfin Lopez and Vicente “Inting” Atillo among others.
On June 28, 1952, Anciong Bacon teamed up with other disgruntled Doce Pares Club eskrimadors and founded the Balintawak Self Defense Club. The purpose of the new club was to propagate the Saavedra Style of eskrima and practice the true combat applications of eskrima. The formation of the new club marked the beginning of an intense rivalry that was intensified by local and national level political corruption and resulted in years of violent confrontations, dishonest political agendas, and even murder. It was during this turbulent time however that the art of eskrima developed into one of the deadliest martial arts in the world. This period later became known as the Golden Age of Eskrima.
It was during this time that Vicente Atillo, a lifelong friend and student of both Saavedra and Bacon, taught the hard-hitting Saavedra Style of eskrima to his son Crispulo “Ising” Atillo. In addition to his father, GM Atillo spent his youth learning from many of the original founding masters of Balintawak eskrima to include Venancio “Anciong” Bacon and the notorious and feared eskrimador, Delfin Lopez.
The combination of these influences, coupled by GM Atillo’s experiences in numerous full contact challenge matches, evolved into the Atillo Balintawak Eskrima – Original Saavedra Style.
On April 24, 1975, GM Atillo and his father formally seceded from the original Balintawak organization and founded the New Arnis Confederation of the Visayas and Mindanao (NACVM) which was later changed to the Philippine Arnis Confederation (PAC). The purpose of the new confederation was to propagate the Balintawak style of Vicente “Inting” Atillo and the hard-hitting style of the legendary Teodoro “Doring” Saavedra. The PAC later became the first eskrima organization in Cebu to affiliate with the newly formed National Arnis Association of the Philippines (NARAPHIL).
In 2001, GM Atillo renamed the PAC to the Atillo Balintawak World Arnis – Eskrima Original Saavedra Style and relocated to the United States to spread the art of Atillo Balintawak Eskrima – Original Saavedra Style throughout the world.
Today, GM Crispulo “Ising” Atillo maintains an extremely busy schedule teaching his beloved art to students throughout the world at his training facility in Beaumont, CA and through his tremendously popular seminars throughout the United States.
This writing has been taken my from Great Grand Masters Website. I share this information to pass it on to the next generation. My Name is Jacob A. Brinnand and I hold a Masters rank under my illustrious teacher about Great Grand Master Crispulo Ising Atillo

The Martial Arts ritual of “Breaking Bread”.
Featured in this photo is Arnis - Eskrima Great Grand Master Crispulo Atillo, Jiu Jitsu Teacher Scott Mullen, Kung Fu / Silat Practitioner & Eskrimador Ken Brisken, along with Sifu / Magtutudlo Jacob A. Brinnand.
I cannot stress enough the importance of brotherhood, sharing ideas, camaraderie and having time to reflect with your fellow warriors. Ritualistically this is done through the tradition of breaking bread, or sharing a meal together.
Every tradition of Martial Arts will focus on a way of sharing time with fellow warriors. Often times this is done when the Master will cook for ones students or gather his/her class together to eat at a restaurant. When this happen’s remember to be on your best behavior & pay your dues.
Over a meal we all share insights with one another. Each person is given time to talk, and some of the most critical insights about a Martial Arts is shared. Yes, through the tradition of breaking bread some of the best conversations I have ever had were brought up and discussed. Why? Because we have a collective mind all woking and sharing thoughts together as a tribe, this is when things and concepts can take form, pay attention to that!
Know this, as we get older we cannot practice for more than 3 or 4 hours of hard training. As our body heal we need time to relax, while this is happening we get our brain working (Mental Martial Arts). This is done over a meal with your Brothers & Sisters present, where we share ideas about the hypothetical “Hunt”.
When sitting down make sure to help pay and contribute in any way you can. Above all this is about trust, good character & friendship. So don’t ruin it by bringing an oversized ego. Be humble, share what you can and spent time with your beloved teacher, be thankful for these times, they dont last forever. Lastly, always go above and beyond and enjoy.
Thank you for reading
Best Regards,
Magtutudlo (Teacher) Jacob A Brinnand.

NBC NEWS Palm Springs, Reports on Great Grand Master Atillo & I.W.M.A. Founder Jacob A. Brinnand.
Reporter: Kamari Esquerra.
“At the age of 83- look at me. I can stand. I can walk. 83 already,” said Great Grand Master Crispulo Atillo.
Grand Master Atillo is 83-years-old, and a master at Eskrima, a Filipino martial arts that focuses on the use of sticks, weapons, and hand-to-hand techniques.
“To use the term ‘Grand Master’, you have to be exceptional. Exceptional at fighting and exceptional as a person,” said Jacob Brinnand, Owner and Founder of Iron Wire Martial Arts.
Grandmaster Atillo began his fighting career at the age of five in his hometown of Mambaling Cebu City, Philippines. He was an instructor for the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and later brought his skills to the U.S.
“His history is absolutely wonderful,” said Brinnand. “To learn from somebody who’s been doing it for 78 years is so inspiring.”
At his age, he has no problem defending himself.
“I can fight, but I will not ask to fight,” said Grandmaster Atillo.
Grandmaster Atillo is now teaching younger generations as a special guest instructor at Iron Wire Martial Arts in Rancho Mirage the art of Eskrima, and showing people that age is just a number.
“If I can move, I can teach Filipino martial arts stick fighting,” said Grandmaster Atillo.
