Pakistan’s former PM released on bail over state secrets case
Pakistani former Prime Minister Imran Khan was granted bail on Friday over a high-profile state secrets case as the court declared him “innocent.”
The Supreme Court also granted bail to his party colleague and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi over the case, also known as “the cipher case.”
The case was heard by a three-member bench headed by Sardar Tariq Masood, acting chief justice. Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah raised questions about the cipher and the inclusion of sections relating to the death sentence in the first information report against the former prime minister and foreign minister.
The former prime minister has not been found guilty; he is innocent. [There was] no proof that his statement benefited any other country.
Khan was accused of divulging state secrets when he waved a confidential diplomatic letter at a rally last year. He and Qureshi, members of Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party, have twice been charged in the case.

Ahmadullah Shah: Ayodhya Mosque to be named after the maulana who died for India’s Independance
NEW DELHI: A devout Muslim who fought the British for India’s independence and was murdered while leading an armed rebellion, Ahmadullah Shah— is the freedom fighter after whom Ayodhya’s mosque could be named. Members of the Trust accounted to develop the land given in lieu of Babri Masjid as mandated by the Supreme Court have confirmed the possibility of Ayodhya Mosque being dedicated to Ahmadullah Shah. Athar Hussain, secretary, Indo Islamic Cultural Foundation (IICF), said the trust is seriously contemplating on the proposal and will officially make an announcement soon after deliberation. Who is Ahmadullah Shah Ahmadullah was born in a noble warrior family of Awadh and was known as the ‘Lighthouse of Rebellion’. He is most notably known for starting the revolt of 1857. His father Ghulam Hussain Khan was a senior official in Mysore’s de facto ruler Haider Ali’s army. Ahmadullah’s forefathers were big exponents of weaponry. Coming from an affluent family, Ahmadullah had good command in the English language. He was a student of traditional Islamic education and had been trained in warfare. Ahmadullah had travelled across Britain, the Soviet Union, Iran, Iraq and had also performed Hajj. The king of Iran having heard of Ahmadullah’s successes in education and warfare offered him a position in his court however, Shah declined it and returned to India. Ahead of the 1857 revolt against the British which broke out in Lucknow, Ahmadullah was captured in Faizabad. However, he escaped from the prison after three months in captivity and launched ‘jihad’ against the British in the Awadh region.

British officer George Bruce Malleson has particularly mentioned Shah’s valour and organizational capabilities in ‘History of Indian Mutiny’, a book written in 6 volumes on the 1857 revolt. Malleson writes that during the freedom struggle, Shah made Ayodhya the crucible of revolution against the British and triggered mutinies across the Awadh region. He turned Masjid Sarai in Faizabad’s Chowk area as his headquarters and held meetings with freedom fighters. He struck fear and sparked panic among the British after he liberated Faizabad and larger parts of the Awadh region. Noted researcher and historian of Awadh, Ram Shankar Tripathi, said, “While being a practising Muslim, he was also the epitome of religious unity and Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb of Ayodhya.” “During the 1857 revolt, royals like Nana Sahib of Kanpur, Kunwar Singh of Arrah fought alongside Ahmadullah Shah. His 22nd Infantry Regiment was commanded by Subedar Ghamandi Singh and Subedar Umrao Singh in the famous Battle of Chinhat,” writes Tripathi. Death of Ahmadullah Shah The British had announced a prize of 50,000 pieces of silver on Ahmadullah’s head. He had been travelling across Awadh and mobilizing people citizens against the imperialists when he asked the king of Powayan Raja Jagannath Singh to join him. on June 5, 1858, when Shah reached Singh’s palace, the king rained bullets on Ahmadullah and killed him. Singh then beheaded Ahmadullah and presented his head to the magistrate who gave him the reward, thus winning favour with the British. Malleson describes Ahmadullah’s death as “Thus died the Moulvee Ahmed Oolah Shah of Faizabad. If a patriot is a man who plots and fights for independence, wrongfully destroyed, for his native country, then most certainly, the Moulvee was a true patriot.”

Islamabad: Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered government to give another chance to India to appoint legal representative for spy and agent of intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) Kulbhushan Jadhav. According to details, a larger bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) headed by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah heard the case. On behalf of government, Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan, Additional Attorney General Tariq Khokhar and Deputy Attorney General Tayyab Shah appeared in the court while senior lawyer Hamid Khan was also present in the court as a judicial assistant. During the proceedings, Attorney General told the court that Pakistan granted counselor access to India as per International Court of Justice (ICJ), however, India has not responded to Pakistan’s offer to appoint lawyer for the Indian spy. IHC, while ordering to give another chance to India to appoint legal representative, adjourned the hearing till October 06. Earlier, Foreign Office had recontacted Indian government over matter of appointing lawyer for Kulbhushan Jadhav, stating that the move came following directives of IHC. On July 22, the Pakistani government had filed a petition in the high court seeking appointment of a lawyer for Jadhav. The petition stated that Kulbhushan, who was involved in several terrorist activities in Pakistan, has refused to file plea against his sentence. The agent cannot appoint lawyer in Pakistan without assistance from India. India is also reluctant to avail the facility under the ordinance. Therefore, in the national interest, the court should appoint a legal representative on behalf of Kulbhushan. The court should order so that Pakistan's responsibility is fulfilled as per the decision of the International Court of Justice, the petition further stated. On July 17, 2020, Pakistan decided to grant third consular access to Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav, who has been awarded death sentence on espionage charges by a military court As per spokesperson Foreign Ministry Ms. Aisha Farooqui, Pakistan formally informed about its decision to Indian authorities and their response was awaited. “The third consular access would be without the https://www.instagram.com/p/CErEKVmFdGb/?igshid=13uknp94ohyvq

Sri Lanka urged not to violate fundamental rights in the name of combating terror
We the undersigned, who are from and live in the various nation-states of South Asia, express our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones in the serial bomb blasts in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. We express our solidarity with those working tirelessly to address the needs of the injured in the aftermath of this carnage and to sustain interfaith and community relationships. While we support all justice efforts that seek to hold the perpetrators of violence accountable, we also urge the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure that, in the name of combating terror and ensuring national security, fundamental human rights and dignity of all concerned are not violated.
We say this because in all our countries, investigations into terror and anti-terror legislation have been accompanied by consistent and continuing violation of civil and democratic rights. Furthermore, in the name of ensuring national security, successive governments in the region have sought to legitimise their various acts of impunity – directed against not only purported or possible suspects but entire sections of the civilian population. This has led to unaccountable loss of life and a steady erosion of democratic guarantees and institutions, including unaccounted for deaths and disappearances. We note with concern that media reports and remarks by state officials and political leaders in Sri Lanka have pointed to State inaction with respect to warnings by intelligence agencies about possible acts of terror. Such inaction and indifference, we regret to note, amounts to State complicity with the violence that subsequently unfolded. We are also concerned that the ‘owning up’ to these acts by the so-called ‘Islamic State’ (Daesh) might encourage Islamophobic attitudes and expressions, both on the part of the Sri Lankan Government and sections of civil society. Should this happen, Sri Lanka would be tragically drawn in to a familiar international discourse and practice to do with ‘Islamic terror’ with all the resultant tragedies, as we have witnessed across Asia. In a country that has barely recovered from decades of civil mistrust, war and violence, this cannot bode well for its sovereignty, civil peace and economic and social life. We wish to point out that the so-called war on ‘Islamic terror’ has resulted in large numbers of the Islamic faith being persecuted, both in their countries and across the world – and this sadly only enhances the appeal of those who seek to wage war in the name of Islam and what they perceive as Islamic concerns and interests. Thus is set in motion a cycle of violence that benefits no one but the arms trade and industries, and political powers that seek to establish their hegemony in the region at all costs. In this context: nWe support all struggles to ensure transparent and fair pursuit of justice for the victims of the blast. At the same time, we stand with those who are against undemocratic anti-terror laws in Sri Lanka, even if they are purportedly deployed for purposes of investigation and national security. nWe protest attempts to target or persecute those of the Islamic faith, in the name of countering terror, whether by the state or vigilante groups. nWe support Muslim communities in the region that have called for peace and are critical of voices from within that endorse extremist religious positions, which polarise everyday life and interactions, and vitiate meaningful dissent and dialogue. nWe affirm the resilience of diverse cultural and religious traditions in the region that have fostered longstanding habits of mutuality, trust and co-existence. We do not wish for the specificity of local beliefs and traditions, of all faiths, to be drawn into polarising global discourses of religious ‘unity’ and ‘singularity’ imposed from above.
