This is from when I was a kid, so there were actually several issues of this series before the cover art changed to the more familiar one with Astro in his classic pose. (I'm not sure if they did other covers for different issues.)

That one was my favorite though -- it had Spud and Robotnik on it! There was even an issue where Astro got captured by Robotnik and he needed help saving him because Astro couldn't use his superpowers or whatever. Anyway you can see that cover at right. It used to be pretty easy to find scans online but then all those sites disappeared for some reason? This particular cover isn't up anywhere else as far as I know.

my hot take is the whole "search for life in the universe" thing is truly just a spin to put sparkle in children's eyes and make dumb congresspeople who like the idea of aliens fund science that actually helps people

the endeavors bring about a ton of great science that is related to health and ecology and atmospheric monitoring and all sorts of stuff and understanding how our planet and life was former and the scientists who do this research and stare at radiograms and try to figure out if that chemical stretch is a C-S or a C-C or a C-O bond, are amazing scientists

but god do I have no interest in "uwu we might have found signs of life on other planets!"

the first time was vaguely neat, now we know it's entirely possible and not novel and probably there's phytoplankton (at best) in some ocean planets that we will never ever visit woo hoo

most of the astro people I know working on these projects are mostly interested in the spectroscopy part too and not the whole search for alien life thing so it's very hard for me to look at the press releases with anything but weariness

no one's interested when we figure out what metals are in the active sites of proteins or that actually a redox inactive metal mutated into this other protein actually increases its activity bc the mechanism involves redox active ligands and cofactors, rather than the metal itself. just. you know. as an example. but every time there's a little blip of "oh there's NOx and SOx and VOCs on another distant planet according to this one spectra--" gets a front page news thing.

Sometimes i go down rabbit holes on a specific topic mentioned in class and i just want to ramble to someone just to have an outlet for the cool things i learnt!

But most of my friends, understandably, aren’t too keen on me rambling about my cool astrobio stuff so i just pretend in my head that Leonardo will listen to bdelloid rotifers and their desiccation and radiation-resistance.

What are your favorite subjects/fields in astrophysics? I like high energy astrophysics and agns right now :3

exoplanets! black holes and cosmology scare me to death! teehee

my phd program (which I'll start next year) has loads of funding available for spectroscopic analysis of exoplanets and the direct imaging of exoplanets, so i'll definitely be exploring those areas. gotta follow the money ya know. but i also want to explore astrobiology.

a year ago i would've said i'm "anti-habitability". i turned my nose up at astrobiology, just like the professor i idolized for his intelligence (he turned out to be a bit of a jerk, unsurprisingly). i thought astrobio was too theoretical, too handwavey. and a secret third thing i don't know how to convey well with words. popsci-y? mainstream? from those around me, i had adopted the notion that astrobio was the thing you said you wanted to do if you weren't smart enough to do the heavy technical work with hot jupiters or stellar interiors. it was the naive dream of kids who would end up switching out of astrophysics because they couldn't keep up.

but in my gap year, in a country where astrophysics isn't really a thing, i've found myself talking about astrobiology more and more. it helps me relate to people across a bunch of different fields because it forces discussions about how we do science in the first place. how do our prior beliefs play into how we design our experiments and proposals, and therefore determine what we are able to find?

im finding that i enjoy these discussions. astrobiology is not just a combination of astronomy and biology. at risk of being annoying, it's reconciling with the fact we are trying to find extraterrestrial life with limited resources in a society run by politicians, religion, and capitalism
