Baya was born Fatma Haddad (1931 - 1998), in Bordj el-Kiffan, a beachy suburb of the city of Algiers, at the North-Western tip of Africa. Orphaned by age 5, she was adopted as a teenager by Marguerite Camina Benhoura, a French intellectual who noticed Baya’s artistic talent from a young age. In her homes in Algiers and the South of France, Benhoura provided Baya with art materials and access to French and Maghrebi art magnates.
In 1947, when Baya was just 16, she was discovered by Aimé Maeght, an established French art dealer, and André Breton, who included Baya’s works in the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme at Galerie Maeght in Paris. Almost overnight she caught the attention of Picasso and Matisse, among other prominent artists, for her colorful, spontaneous and “childlike” compositions. “Her work allows us to question so many different histories,” said curator Natasha Boas. “The outsider. The outlier. The woman artist.”
Boas decided on the title, “Baya: Woman of Algiers,” drawing from three points of inspiration: a book by Assia Djebar, the leading feminist theorist from the Maghrebi region of North Africa, titled Women of Algiers in Their Apartment; Picasso’s The Women of Algiers series (1955) inspired by Baya herself; and The Battle of Algiers, a 1966 film directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, based on events during the Algerian War (1954-62).

📚 reading
Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement (Assia Djebar): a lucky find, very insightful and heartbreaking look in the condition of Algerian women during and after the independence of Algeria
Histoire des Treize (H. De Balzac): this man will give Paris the most compassionate and detailed characterization and then turn around and write women like that. Also how dare him sell this as a story of great conspiracy when it's just three men being douchebags about women and this secret society being mentioned for half a line at the end of the story.
Geranios en el balcón (Carolina Pobla): not my usual novel, but it flows really well and it's really human
Inochi urimasu [Life for sale/Vita in vendita] (Mishima Yukio): a surreal book, a quick read. I'm fascinated with Mishima's brain. There was something wrong going on with him.
Moby Dick (Melville): (it was a shortened version i bought for 1€ used) I devoured it and the wording of the ending is so chilling. I'm still reeling. Now I need to scavenge in the ff section because sure as hell someone has written some Ishmael/Queequeg.
Diary (Anne Frank): there is nothing I could say or add. Just a necessary book to read.
David Copperfield (Dickens): this is a Peggotty stan club now
The lion* (Kessel): honestly? I have no idea how to feel about this. A resounding 'mmh'
Mrs. Harris goes to Paris* (Gallico): if someone doesn't want to instantly protect, defend and cherish Mrs. Harris that's a red flag
The rainbow and the rose* (Shute): starts slow but becomes increasingly intriguing
Anatomy of a crime* (Dinneen): I could not put the book down. I was enthralled
*abriged version in a Reader's digest compilation I bought secondhand
Persuasion (Austen): I WILL REREAD THIS BOOK AS LONG AS I LIVE. LOVE STORY OF THE AGES. CONSTANTLY THINKING ABOUT THIS.
🎥 watching
Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008): Brendan Fraser will make the wackiest, most plasticky cgi look like a believable threat and I don't understand how
Sister act: you will say 'you have seen this movie thousands of times, how many more times will you watch it?' and I will say FUCK YOU THIS IS A MASTERPIECE
Sister act 2: BANGER AFTER BANGER AFTER BANGER FOR SISTER MARY CLARICE
Che Dio ci aiuti (s. 1): I somehow manifested a rerun of this first season. My powers know no match

Scenes from isolation
A lot of tea, candles, and sunbeams. Trying to soak up all the warmth I can lately.
I had checked The Mischief [La Soif] by Assia Djebar out of the library long ago, and in looking for a longer story to immerse myself in, picked it up and promptly devoured it. I had forgotten that kind of afterglow you get when you come up for air after a good book; this is precisely the feeling I've been trying to remember. The joy of reading, the immersion, the luxurious feeling of having lived another life. I love it.
