This has probably already/asked been said and it might just be obvious but do you think Ritsu's snide and rude remarks about the awakening lab kids when he first meets them and sees their powers might be more than just being judgemental/critical overall, that he thinks that maybe if this is the best others can do than he has no chance of defending himself from Mob or getting the scope of psychic powers he really wants, and he doesn't want to admit that to himself yet

i think an important thing to remember about ritsu is that psychic powers were the standard for his world. the kageyama parents treating mob’s powers as normal and just a thing he can do was good for mob and his development, but also made ritsu feel worse.

another thing to note is that, while at this point he does not admit it yet, ritsu has a very specific reason for wanting psychic powers- he wants to be able to protect himself from mob. he’s spent his whole life stewing in a fear he barely even lets himself recognize (pretending it’s admiration) and now he’s here at a place that promises to give him what he wants- only to find out that they think hoshino’s struggle to bend a single spoon, or asahi’s single tiny flame, is considered superhumanly impressive. mob bends spoons by accident!!! levels entire buildings without breaking a sweat!! if ritsu wants to feel safe, he needs to be in that ballpark

i see ritsu’s harshness with the awakening lab kids as coming from a place of. they have this thing he’s been wanting for his entire life, and they’re doing it wrong. they’re calling themselves psychics because of these things they can do- but they’re not that impressive, because ritsu could replicate all of those tricks! and he’s judging them for not being able to live up to that standard of psychic powers.
