DAW Woes: Time for a Change?

Alright, I'm just plain exhausted with this whole situation, I admit it. When it comes to making music, my priority is basically to relax, and lately, that's just not happening. Especially when I'm working on a pretty complex and long track.

The issue is simple: FL STUDIO is giving me huge problems! I mean, seriously, how is it possible that with a DELL XPS 9640, this DAW demands so many system resources? As you can see, in idle mode, doing absolutely nothing, the DAW takes up almost 20 GB of RAM! Not to mention, as soon as I hit play on a track, my CPU spikes to 99%!

I'm attached to this DAW, but as soon as I try anything even slightly complex, here come the freezes, crashes, unplayable drum audio, and to top it all off, various slowdowns. Don't even get me started on when I use my electric guitar with its effects, pedals, and amp: game over!

I've tried various solutions: fiddling with options, changing audio drivers (from ASIO, etc. but nothing!). I'm tired. Today, I lost so many hours of work on a track because FL Studio messed up all the Arturia plugins I used, and I had to rebuild everything.

I have a feeling it's time to change DAWs or even the entire ecosystem. Switching DAWs would mean a major workflow change, and it would be a disaster at first. I was thinking of redirecting my creative process towards MAC and Logic Pro, but even then, never having used either a Mac or Logic Pro, it would literally be twice the effort: both to get comfortable in the new ecosystem and to get the hang of Logic Pro and make a new way of working my own.

I do all this for passion, to have fun, but if the result is feeling burdened because the tech support I use gives me problems, it essentially becomes frustrating.

Heavy Metal Levels in Abandoned Mining Soil: Zamboanga City

Abstract

The study aimed to determine the extent of heavy metal contamination of Copper (Cu) and Lead (Pb) in the soil from the abandoned mining area in Zamboanga City, Philippines using the 2017 EMB Site Characterization Guidelines. Soil samples were randomly collected from 3 meridional blocks at 2 different soil depths, 0-5cm and 20-25cm. Pb and Cu concentrations, organic matter (OM) percentages, pH and Electrical Conductivity (EC) were analyzed using appropriate equipment across sampling sites. The study revealed that heavy metal content in Block 3 exceeded the maximum allowable concentrations based on WHO standard with an average mean of 3,351.00mgkg-1 Pb and 498.67mgkg-1 Cu at 20-25cm soil depth. Moreover, at 0-5cm soil depth, Block 3 had 4176.33mgkg-1 Pb and 494.67mgkg-1 Cu. Furthermore, soil pH was strongly acidic across all blocks with values of pH 5.0 at Block 1; pH 4.7 at Block 2 and pH 4.1 at Block 3. For EC and OM percentages, results ranged from 183.33 μS/cm to 286.67 μS/cm and 1.81% to 4.05%, respectively. Using Analysis of Variance at P < 0.05, this study further revealed that there is a significant difference of Pb and Cu concentrations in 3 meridional blocks at 0.001. This indicates that heavy metal concentrations present in the soil varies in the 3 blocks. However, in physico-chemical parameters, only organic matter has significant difference in all blocks at P ≤0.01. Based from the findings, it is recommended that counter measures be undertaken to minimize further retrogressive impacts of mine tailings left in the area specifically in Block 3.

Introduction

Abandoned mining sites are significant sources of metal pollution even after centuries due to presence of contaminants in the soil. Toxic metals that remain in the soil and tailing ponds have the potential to travel and contaminate environmental habitats such as soil, water, groundwater, and air. It has the potential to alter soil texture, deplete nutrients, penetrate the food chain, create harmful consequences, and destroy ecological habitat and biological variety, including plants (Conesa et al., 2006; Baker et al., 2010; Rashed, 2010).

Soil pollution by heavy metals is a global environmental issue. Heavy metal contaminants represent a health risk to humans through food chain transfer from soils to crops, prompting increased scientific and public awareness of the issue (Alloway 1995; Oliver 1997; Chen and Lee, 1995; Chen et al., 2000) particularly in the areas close to industrial sites and in the vicinity of mining and smelting plants (Pushenreiter et al., 2005). Heavy metal pollution of soils can also be caused by the parent material's high heavy metal content (Huang, 1962; Reeves, 2003). People living in the area may not be aware of the soil pollution, according to Navarrete and Asio (2011), who cautioned that the risk posed by polluted soils is caused by a lack of awareness of people living in the area, who may not be aware of the presence of these pollutants and their health effects.

This study evaluated the concentrations of heavy metals in soil from abandoned mining area in Barangay Baluno, Zamboanga City. Soils in the surrounding mining areas are probably polluted by heavy metals which could possibly pose high health risks to the adjacent community (Li, 2014). The study area has been abandoned for a decade and this study would like to assess the possible contamination of heavy metals in the soil in the present. It was hypothesized that the soils from the abandoned mining area are highly concentrated with heavy metals. The main goal of this study was to determine the concentration of copper and lead in the soils from the abandoned mining area.

Terror attacks more deadly, strong link to conflicts

Terrorism is getting worse with deaths at their highest level in more than five years, as Australia's top spy warns of an increasing risk of sabotage by potential terrorists.

Deaths from terrorism eclipsed 8360 - up 22 per cent - but the number of attacks have fallen, meaning they were more deadly, according to the Global Terrorism Index.

There's been more than 50 per cents jump in people killed per attack marking the worst rate in almost a decade, it found.

It's also becoming more concentrated, with 10 countries accounting for almost 90 per cent of terrorism-related deaths.

More than three in four terrorism-related deaths in Western democracies were in the United States last year.

The Central Sahel region of sub-Saharan Africa has now become the epicentre of terrorism over the Middle East with more than half of deaths.

The was also a "strong link between conflict and terrorism" with over 90 per cent of attacks and 98 per cent of deaths in 2023 occuring in conflict zones.

Spy chief Mike Burgess warned terrorism was still a threat in Australia despite espionage being the biggest security risk.

Terrorists are increasingly looking towards sabotage, the ASIO director-general said.

"Over the last 18 months, we've also seen an uptick in the number of nationalist and racist violent extremists advocating sabotage in private conversations, both here and overseas," Mr Burgess said.

This was particularly profound amongst extremists who wanted to trigger a "race war", he said.

"We have seen them endorsing attacks on power networks, electrical substations and railway networks."

Extremist attacks against critical infrastructure in the United States were growing in number, sophistication and impact and proved "a sobering reminder that terrorism remains a threat".

"It's a real threat, a pervasive threat, even with a lower national threat level," he said.

"While Australia's terrorist threats have reduced in scale, they have increased in complexity."

A lone wolf actor striking without warning was a major concern, which was what was happening in the US, Mr Burgess said.

ASIO is investigating multiple people who have discussed committing terrorism in Australia, Mr Burgess confirmed.

Sunni violent extremism was the greatest religiously motivated violent extremist threat in Australia but people were not travelling to join terrorist groups in the Middle East like they did with Islamic State, he said.

The security environment was also complicated by ideologically motivated extremists switching between ideologies and merging components from different ones to create new, hybrid beliefs, he added.

"A perverse 'choose your own adventure' approach to radicalisation," he said.

Since I got rid of the Roland keyboard amp I was using as a guitar amplifier in 2013, whenever I've been noodling around, playing along with a record, or learning a song, I've been plugged into a computer through an audio interface and using amp modelling software. I've been using the Guitar Rig series of software since the second version, and I own the Rig Kontrol interface/foot controller that lets you control it. Playing through the computer lets me play as loud and as weird as I want without annoying anyone, I just use my studio headphones. —Also did I mention that a Fender Twin Reverb gets really loud, like really, really loud; I've never been daring enough to crank the volume dial past two out of fear of causing windows to shake, things to fall, and cops to be called.— In my last few years of university I would bring in one of my electric guitars with me into my office and play during lunch or at the end of the day. This was a pretty great set-up for a long time.

And then my 2013 15" MacBook Pro died last year and I didn't want to replace it with a new Mac for a whole bunch of reasons. For one, the version of Guitar Rig I was using was no longer supported by the newest versions of OS X after Apple discontinued support for 32-bit software, and the developer of Guitar Rig had stopped supporting the Rig Kontrol in the versions of Guitar Rig that were compatible with the latest OS X releases. I was also just fed up with Apple making their operating system less functional for me, a power user, with every new release.

After some wrangling I managed to get Guitar Rig 5 working with the Rig Kontrol in Windows 11 (it involved installing a Windows 7 driver and some registry edits) and it works fine for the most part. The audio latency is noticeably worse in Windows unless you restrict yourself to lower bitrates (audio I/O drivers in OS X execute on the kernel level, unlike in Windows, and while ASIO is good, it's not as good and there's still a translation layer before you get that final output), but it's fine. The thing is that it's a pain in the ass to get everything ready to go, and then inevitably I get distracted by something on the computer. I think some of my impetus behind putting together a pedalboard is just to get some distraction free time playing my instrument. There's also just the question of how long my Guitar Rig set-up will remain viable; I'm already using an interface driver written for a version of Windows three releases ago, and the version of Guitar Rig I'm using is two versions old too.

I still recommend trying out Guitar Rig if you play guitar, it's a lot of fun designing signal chains you could never possibly afford, or emulating the set-ups of your favourite guitar players (old issues of Guitar Player are great for this). I've got a preset that recreates John McGeoch's rig from his time with Siouxsie and the Banshees and another one that replicates Robert Fripp's set-up circa 1973. It's a cool program, much more granular and tinkerer friendly than other amp modeling software I've tried. I also don't think I've ever actually paid for a legitimate copy of the software despite owning hardware for it, because it's a really easy piece of software to pirate.

I've been slowly putting together a pedalboard and the above diagram is what I hope it will look like when finished. Yes, a Fender '65 Twin Reverb sounds terrific on its own, and when I bought that amp off my friend Rebecca (formerly of punk/grind band Thick Piss, now a criminal defence lawyer) she threw in an Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer. That's been enough for me, I'm typically pretty light on effects, the only other pedal I owned for years was a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah (which my dad is borrowing at the moment). Although, if I'm going to be perfectly honest, the Tube Screamer is not my favourite overdrive pedal; I've wanted a ProCo Rat for the longest time, but if you're going to get one of those you should really get your hands on a vintage one and those are getting absurdly expensive, otherwise clones are just as good in most cases. Well, it turns out there's this galaxy of inexpensive Chinese circuit clones of coveted effects pedals waiting to be discovered in the depths of AliExpress. A lot of them are good too, hell, some of them are even improvements on the original circuit designs. Did I mention that they're cheap? In some cases we're talking a quarter of the price of a new original.

So I ordered a few. The Dunlop MXR Flanger clone has already arrived and it sounds fantastic. The DynaComp Compressor clone sounds great too. I'm still waiting on the Rat clone; I'm particularly excited for this one as it also models all the Rat variants (Fat Rat, Dirty Rat, Turbo Rat). The fourth pedal I ordered is an octave pedal because the rumbling roar of Neil Young's guitar tone on "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" has been burned into my brain from age seventeen onward.

Once those last two pedals arrive in the next few weeks, maybe I'll record a short video demoing them. I just think they're neat.

As for everything else, well I'd need to get an actual board, and a power supply, and it'd be smart to have a noise gate at the end of the chain, and a chromatic tuner wouldn't be expensive (although my relative pitch is still pretty damn good, so tuning by ear isn't a huge deal). Maybe I could sell the Tube Screamer, and replace it with something more like an actual fuzz pedal (a Big Muff Pi or Fuzz Face clone would be cool). I don't know if I really want any other effects. I'm not a huge fan of using delay (even if it is sometimes fun to emulate Frippertronics), and the spring reverb in the Fender Twin is lush and vibrant so there's no need for a reverb pedal. I suppose I could get a chorus (Kurt Cobain's guitar sound on "Come As You Are"), or a phaser (Hendrix playing "The Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock), but I honestly don't know how much use I'd get out of them.

We'll see if I actually manage to assemble the thing properly with an actual board, but hey, it's a bunch of fun stuff to maybe get me back into the habit of playing more. I have no illusions of being able to play everyday for upwards of two to three hours like when I was a music student, but even just playing more often than "almost never" would be cool.

Apparently twelve hours after posting, the sound file just stopped working on the previous post. And I can’t reupload it. Again. Dafuq? Anyway, reposting.

Not my usual cyberpunk fare. I pulled out my guitar and old effects pedal for the first time in… I don’t even know how long. Somehow the sci-fi nerd and 90s grunge fan in me kinda came out of the woodwork…

For years I didn’t have the money for any of the instruments that I wanted, which is why I started writing music on the computer. But one day I got lucky, I found an electric guitar that I really liked and that I could actually afford. Just a simple Dean EVO, nothing fancy. I got it right when they decided to move the production line to a cheaper location and drop the price. I don’t know if mine is from before or after the production line switch. And honestly… I don’t care. It’s a little looser than I’m used to, but then again, that’s because I grew up with a steel string acoustic. And about a year later, I happened to find a nifty little Boss ME-20 effects pedal used for cheap. I only used the pedal for one project, the theme song to my short-lived attempt at doing a video game review series.

This was just me fiddling around, getting a feel for the pedal and figuring out how to actually record it on my computer. In my old setup, I actually had a decent sound card made for multi track recording. It had numerous in/out lines of various types, and all I had to do was hook it up. Now my desktop has been kaput for a few years now, and I’m just trying to record on my laptop. So I had to figure out how to get Windows to cooperate and actually let me record through the microphone jack instead of defaulting to the built in mic in the laptop. And for some reason, I just couldn’t get it to work with Acid, even when I literally DEACTIVATED the damn built in microphone in Windows itself. Freakin’ bizarre. Finally I just said screw it, and changed the software Acid was using to connect to the sound devices from the Windows one to ASIO, and it worked fine. Go figure.

Anyway, after all that frustration, then spending more time figuring out how to properly balance the line in to avoid having it clip when I hit any hard notes or chords, I got the tiny little snippet recorded that I needed to record for Embraced. I’ve got the rest of the week to figure out exactly what I want to do for the last song on Cyberloops 3.0, but it’s probably going to be something a little more hard rock. Maybe one style with some synth to give it an industrial feel, the other with straight guitar and bass. Which reminds me, I really should replace the strings on my bass when I pull it out tomorrow…

Anyway. Once I was done, I only had a little time before I had to head out and be somewhere tonight. So I figured I’d just have some fun and fool around. And since I only had a little time… well, time was on my mind. So I just hit the distortion hard and recorded the main background chords, then switched to a more bluesy sound and started noodling while the chords looped in the background.

Plugged in the amp, plugged in the footswitch, set the tone controls to mid setting, adjusted the levels of the channels to give a mild crunch on the clean channel and an overdriven 'rhythm' tone on the lead channel with the same volume on each channel and ran through the entire set without changing anything. Several gigs in and I still haven't tweaked much. We play a mix of fairly hard edged R&B as a power trio and I get full and rounded tones from this little amp that sit well in the mix with more than enough balls for most of the venues we play. IMHO H&K's approach is perfect for the lunchbox format. They've concentrated on creating separate channel voicings that are fit for purpose and what they have chosen works great for me.

If you are used to using the tone controls on the amp to get the sound you want, this amp takes a different approach. As I see it the tone controls allow you to tweak the sound for the room and stage dynamics you're dealing with. If you don't like the basic channel voicings H&K have given you then this is probably not the amp for you, though I struggle to see what is not to like.

It also take the guess work out of things. I toyed with giving the amp four stars for features as it is a lunch box and lacks the versatility of it's grown up brothers, but given the sheer useability of the amp combined with power soak, red box DI and a effects loop I believe it rates 5 stars for the format.

I've been following Mixcraft since its original release as various songwriter and musician friends kept referring to its ease of use and capabilities. Since version 1 its functions have been steadily growing while somehow the Mixcraft team managed to keep its price close to the original. I was given version 4 to review but while going to print, the Acoustica team released version 5, so naturally I spent some time with the software to get a feel for the changes. While I honestly couldn't find much to gripe about version 4, version 5 had me ecstatic over the changes and new features. To be honest, I would like to pretty much say - 'What are you waiting for? To test Mixcraft I loaded a few songs that I was working on from WAV files and proceeded to build up the compositions and add a few extra parts. The first striking thing was that without a manual I managed to get started tracking right away. Actually throughout the whole time I can't think I ever referred to the manual - everything was where I expected it to be and was pretty much self explanatory. I ran a few realtime amp simulations while tracking guitar and Mixcraft handled them with ease and latency was very low, at about 2-3ms. Mixcraft performed like a champ as I proceeded loading it with more and more files. Compared to other software, such as Cubase LE4 and Tracktion, Mixcraft was running these tracks with less overhead and seemed to be more responsive than the competition. The software comes with its own plugin bundle, guitar amp sims and virtual instruments, which while useful still left something to be desired. The addition of the Pultec inspired Pultronic Tube EQ is definitely a step in the right direction but still this is the only part of the software where I can tell the price point. Luckily for us, Mixcraft runs external VST and Direct X plugins as well and they even encourage supplementing with some freeware VST effects, such as Kjaerhus Audio Classic Series, SIR convolution reverb and so forth. Working with Mixcraft was a very pleasant experience and I noticed that my workflow improved as less clutter meant more music-making. Fader automation is a breeze, as is audio editing - pretty much all the functions that I needed were there. An extra plus was the included audio export to MP3 as some programs, such as Cubase LE charge extra for that option. While mixing I'd have to say that the new mixer view came in real handy and the software's dual monitor mode definitely helped me better organize the workflow - I simply sent the mixer to the second monitor and was happily zipping along with the tracks. Another handy new tool that I found was the new Link Feature - it allowed me to link together a whole section of a song, and move it around as a one piece. This comes in really handy when you're not exactly sure if say your bridge should go between the bridge or the chorus, or maybe the chorus needs to be extended twice. Some other new features that came in really handy were the bounce (Mix to New Audio Track) and MIDI Merging (Mix to New Clip) features. The bounce feature was great when combining several recorded sources of the same guitar signal - in my case I recorded guitar with 3 tracks, one DI that I ran amp emulation on and two mic tracks that I blended to taste, compressed and eq-ed and then bounced to one track to save clutter and conserve system power. The MIDI Merging tool came in handy when I needed to merge a midi drum sample to my tapped-in-via keyboard conga parts so I could run only one midi track for simplicity's sake.

Overall Mixcraft have managed to create very impressive software, with lots of features that can appeal to novice and veteran users. It is easy to get started on and achieve fast quality results.
