BJP’s Electoral Shuffle: Dropping a Quarter of Sitting MPs for Fresh Faces
In a bold move for its third bid for power, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is shaking up its roster by opting to replace a significant portion of its sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Out with the Old, In with the New:
The BJP has unveiled six lists of candidates for just over 400 seats, and notably, approximately a fourth of its sitting MPs, totaling around 100 individuals, have been denied tickets for re-election. This trend echoes the party’s strategy from the 2019 elections when 99 sitting MPs were not fielded. This time, with candidates announced for 405 seats already, it’s anticipated that the number of ousted sitting MPs may surpass previous records as more may find themselves without tickets.
The Modi Factor:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategy appears to be centered on mitigating anti-incumbency sentiments by introducing fresh faces. Modi has stressed the importance of the party symbol, the lotus, over individual candidates, emphasizing that no one has the entitlement to demand tickets. Instead, the campaign focuses on Modi’s leadership, his welfare schemes, and the party’s claimed achievements in foreign and economic policies.
New Faces, New Strategies:
Under Modi’s leadership, the BJP is tapping into a diverse pool of candidates. This includes former Chief Ministers and Rajya Sabha MPs, such as Dharmendra Pradhan, Bhupender Yadav, and Rajeev Chandrashekhar, who are now vying for Lok Sabha seats. Additionally, past Chief Ministers like Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Manohar Lal Khattar have been fielded, leveraging their established stature in state politics.
Crossing Party Lines:
A notable feature of the BJP’s strategy is the inclusion of defectors from other parties. Individuals like Naveen Jindal and Ashok Tanwar, who recently joined the BJP from the Congress, have swiftly secured candidacies. This trend extends to prominent figures like Jyotiraditya Scindia and Jitin Prasada, who switched sides in recent years, further diversifying the BJP’s candidate pool.
Changing Tides:
Some sitting MPs may find themselves replaced due to waning popularity or statements that have embarrassed the party. Notable names like Meenakshi Lekhi, Ramesh Bidhuri, and Varun Gandhi are among those facing potential ousting, signaling a shift towards candidates more aligned with the party’s current objectives.
As the BJP reshapes its electoral strategy, it’s evident that the party is prioritizing adaptability and diversity in its candidate selection process. With fresh faces and new strategies, the BJP aims to secure victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections

Ex-Haryana Cong chief Ashok Tanwar quits party
In a jolt to the Congress in poll-bound Haryana, its former state unit head Ashok Tanwar quit the party on Saturday.
Tanwar had been sulking ever since he was removed from the post of Haryana Congress chief last month and had staged a protest along with hundreds of his supporters outside the residence of party’s Interim President Sonia Gandhi here earlier this week, alleging wrongdoings in distribution of election tickets in the state.
He has attacked the coterie of Sonia Gandhi and has alleged that “money power” was being used in Haryana and ordinary workers were being ignored.

Ex-Haryana Congress chief launches new party
NEW DELHI: Former Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar launched a new political party ‘Apna Bharat Morcha‘ in the national capital on Thursday. The launch event, held at the Constitution Club, was attended by scores of youth and Tanwar supporters, including former Tripura Congress chief Kirit Pradyut Deb Barman. “The Apna Bharat Morcha is a value driven initiative, which will work with a three-pillared approach of dialogue, debate and discussion to add not only verve to Indian ethos of unity in diversity but will also lay the foundation for truly making our country the land of hope and fulfillments,” said Tanwar during the event. Tanwar, who was an MP from Sirsa in Lok Sabha during 2009-14, had quit Congress days before the Haryana assembly polls in October 2019. He had revolted against the party’s leadership alleging irregularities and corruption in ticket distribution and even protested outside the Congress chief’s 10 Janpath residence. He was replaced by Kumari Selja as the state party chief while Tanwar’s bete noire and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was made the Congress legislative party leader. On the need for launching new political front, the 44-year-old leader said a platform was needed to “crystallise positive energies” and “fulfill the aspirations” of youth of the nation. “Apna Bharat Morcha will be an agent for positive changes and a platform to give voice to the voiceless. It will be a dynamic, value-based platform for consolidating diverse voices and perspectives, which are neglected by the mainstream political parties. It is a movement against the tyranny of ideological vacuum and apathy of the present leadership,” he added.

via Today Bharat nbsp; New Delhi: A potential split threatens the Congress after speculation that Rahul Gandhi could return at the helm. A debate is raging on ways to rid the party of its ldquo;dynasty tagrdquo;. Some young leaders are convinced that if Rahul leads it in the 2024 general election, it would spell another electoral washout as he ldquo;is no matchrdquo; for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several have come out and suggested measures for the party to regain its rhythm, but ldquo;inaction at all levelsrdquo; have left them disheartened. nbsp; Earlier this week, former MP Sandeep Dikshit said there were ldquo;six to eightrdquo; people capable of leading the party. He attacked senior leaders by saying ldquo;sometimes you want inaction because you donrsquo;t want a certain action to happenrdquo;. Many feel that Rahul is surrounded by ldquo;unelectable leaders who want him back because thatrsquo;s how they can be in powerrdquo;. Party leaders who have either lost election or have not fought or are hankering for a Rajya Sabha nomination are floating his name to keep themselves relevant, sources say. Former Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam, who was sulking during the election, wants Rahul back as party chief. The situation is so bad, sources say, that several state leaders have started looking at other options. ldquo;The time is not ripe for Mr Gandhi to take over,rdquo; a state leader said. ldquo;It would be better that he takes a backseat and a new face emerges, who can take on the BJP with a new narrative.rdquo; He wondered that if Rahul wanted to return, then why did he leave in such a hurry when the entire party wanted him to continue. Even with no position his views are mostly against what the party is doing. Insiders claim he was against the post-poll alliance in Maharashtra with the Shiv Sena. Also, during the Haryana assembly poll, his proteacute;geacute; Ashok Tanwar, who was removed as Haryana unit chief and eventually resigned, was creating trouble for the party. Many leaders claimed after the 2019 Lok Sabha debacle several candidates in assembly elections are not keen for Rahul to campaign for them. The other grievance is that Rahulrsquo;s office is full of ldquo;left-leaning NGO people with little ground-level experiencerdquo;. Earlier, former Congress leaders Jagdambika Pal and Hemanta Biswa Sarma (both now with the BJP) claimed it was impossible to get an appointment; and even when one was given, the feedback given to him went ldquo;against the grassroots leadersrdquo;. After Sonia Gandhi took charge, there have four Assembly polls mdash; Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Delhi. The Congress is in power in Jharkhand and Maharashtra, and has increased its tally in Haryana. It is also argued that the party won Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in 2018 only because of strong state leaders. The pressure within the party is at an all-time high. nbsp;

BJP scales up protest, Sukhbir Kataria says words ‘twisted’ | Gurgaon News
GURUGRAM: Members of BJP’s IT cell and a few Hindu outfits burnt the effigy of Sukhbir Kataria, the Congress candidate from Gurgaon, on Saturday over a TV debate controversy. Kataria accused BJP of twisting his comments out of context and trying to fool voters. However, a section of local leaders who owe their allegiance to Ashok Tanwar, the former state Congress chief who resigned from the party on Saturday, also condemned Kataria’s statement. During a TV debate earlier in the week, Kataria, a former Haryana minister, had remarked, “Gurgaon mein ab Bharat Mata ki jai nahi chalegi, ab sirf Sukhbir Kataria ki jai, Sonia Gandhi ki Jai aur Bhupinder Singh Hooda ki jai chalegi (Gurgaon will not say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ anymore and people will only say ‘jai’ for Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Hooda and himself)”. The BJP protest started at Sadar Bazar where BJP workers gathered and raised slogans against Congress before burning Kataria’s effigy. Eyeing political gains, party leaders are now planning to run a campaign against Congress at the state level. “The statement has exposed the mentality of Congress. Today, we protested in Gurgaon. After this, we are going to protest all across the state over this issue to expose the Congress party,” said Arun Yadav, chief of BJP’s IT cell in Haryana. Kataria said the remarks on TV were made in a certain context. “BJP leaders have found an excuse to divert attention from major issues. Whenever BJP leaders are asked about their responsibilities, they dodge question and start saying ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’. We all are proud of being Indian and calling India our motherland but BJP wants every Indian to prove their identity by shouting the slogan. Who has given them this right? Voters are aware about the party’s tactics of fooling people. It will not work anymore,” Kataria said.

Haryana stalking: BJP's incharge of Haryana rules out Barala's resignation
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Anil Jain, in charge of the party's Haryana affairs, on Monday ruled out the resignation of its state unit chief Subhash Barala following the arrest of the latter's son in a stalking case in Chandigarh.
"Subhash Barala has nothing to with the Vikas Barala case. The law is taking its own course. There is no reason for Subhash Barala's resignation," Jain said in a statement.
Jain's statement ruling out Barala's resignation comes a day after Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar also said that the BJP state unit chief had "nothing to do with the incident".
The Opposition has been mounting pressure seeking Subhash Barala's resignation on the issue.
"Subhash Barala has nothing to do with Political News incident. It is an individual happening, the accused will face action once found guilty. This is my official stand, this was my stand yesterday and today also this is my stand. After this, on this issue, no question, no answer," Khattar had told reporters on Sunday.
Subhash Barala had earlier said that he respects the law and the "truth" will come out through the judicial process.
The son of Haryana's ruling BJP chief was arrested along with his friend for allegedly stalking a woman in Chandigarh.
Both the accused, Vikas Barala (23) and Ashish Kumar (27), were released later on bail as they were booked under bailable sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act, amid a major outcry.
The incident came to light when the woman, around 28 years of age, called up the police on Friday night and complained that two youth were chasing her.
Meanwhile, Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar on Monday met the victim and her family at her residence in Chandigarh and assured her of support in fighting the case.
A protest march was also taken out here over the incident.
"We appreciate the brave girl for standing up to harassment by two men, one of them belonging to an influential family. The whole of Chandigarh stands by her side," said a citizen.
A Congress worker also accused the Chandigarh police of acting under pressure in the stalking case to protect the accused.

‘Who’s next?’: Anxiety in Cong after Pilot revolt, all eyes on Rahul brigade
NEW DELHI: After rebellions by Jyotiraditya Scindia in Madhya Pradesh and Sachin Pilot in Rajasthan, the focus is now on Rahul Gandhi‘s “youth brigade” and those whom he had given key responsibilities when he was Congress president. There is apprehension prevailing in the rank and file of the Congress after the happenings in Rajasthan, where Pilot has declared open rebellion against the Ashok Gehlot government, sources said. Almost everyone in the party has just one question on their mind, “who next”, they said. “Obviously we are forced to think that when leaders who have been given a lot of responsibilities in a short span of time and whose capabilities the party was confident of using going forward, are not satisfied, then definitely something is wrong,” a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) told ‘PTI-Bhasha’ on the condition of anonymity. The CWC is the highest decision making body of the Congress. Pilot and Scindia are the latest additions to the list of leaders who have raised the flag of rebellion. In the Congress, they were earlier known as members of the “Rahul brigade”, the sources said. Other leaders who were part of this brigade included former Congress Haryana unit president Ashok Tanwar, former Madhya Pradesh unit chief Arun Yadav, former Mumbai chiefs Milind Deora and Sanjay Nirupam, former Punjab Congress president Pratap Singh Bajwa, former Jharkhand unit president Ajoy Kumar and former Karnataka chief Dinesh Gundu Rao, they said. The sources said Madhusudhan Mistry, who has been the in charge of Uttar Pradesh, former Uttar Pradesh unit president Raj Babbar and AICC general secretary in charge Rajasthan Avinash Pande, Mohan Prakash and Deepak Babaria, are also part of the group which was seen as having the backing of Rahul Gandhi. The Congress admitted that resentment had increased with the “Rahul brigade” getting more importance in the party, they said. The sources said most of them showed rebellious attitude on losing their posts and alleged that most of them did not live up to the responsibility given to them and continued to encourage factionalism in the party. Another senior Congress leader told PTI Bhasha, “Leaders who are going against the party after getting a lot in the Congress are cheating themselves. Everyone should understand that this is the time to not ask from the party, but to give back to it.” However, former Haryana Congress chief Tanwar said that the argument that leaders whom Gandhi gave responsibilities did not live up to expectations, does not hold. “It is because of Pilot, a young leader, that in the Rajasthan assembly elections, the Congress managed to reach 100 seats from 21. The hard work of the youth team in Haryana resulted in more than 30 seats. If the young leaders would have been given proper opportunity, the party’s situation would have been different,” he said. However, a political expert said that the “generational conflict” in the Congress was also a major reason that leaders of Gandhi’s choice could not assert themselves in the party and some of them revolted. Director at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies Sanjay Kumar said, “There has been a raging generational conflict within the Congress in the last few years. While older leaders are trying to retain their place, younger leaders, especially those considered close to Rahul, insist on change and find themselves neglected in the current system. This is the reason for rebellion in some places. ” However, 72-year-old Harish Rawat, Congress general secretary and former Uttarakhand chief minister, refused to believe that there is any generational conflict within the party. “The situation which is seen is due to the attack on democracy by the BJP. Sadly, due to their ambition, some people of ours got caught in their trap. It would have been better that if such leaders wanted any justice, they should have tried for it within the party itself,” he said. Rahul Gandhi resigned as Congress president after the party’s 2019 Lok Sabha poll debacle and Sonia Gandhi was installed as interim chief on August 10 by the CWC, the party’s highest decision-making body.

via Today Bharat BJP leader and Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattarrsquo;s lsquo;no entryrsquo; sign for the 43-year-old erstwhile former Congressman Ashok Tanwar stands out in sharp contrast with the ruling partyrsquo;s past electoral strategy in Haryana.Within hours of Ashok Tanwar, the former chief of the Congress in Haryana resigning from his partyrsquo;s primary membership, BJP leader and State Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar put up a lsquo;no entryrsquo; sign, for the 43-year-old erstwhile Congressman. ldquo; We will not give him [Ashok Tanwar] entry [into BJP],rdquo; asserted Mr. Khattar, speaking in his constituency Karnal last Saturday. ldquo;None with baggage will be welcomed intordquo; the party, he added. The remarks by Mr. Khattar, who was responding to a question on whether the BJP had invited the former Congress chief, stood out in sharp contrast with the ruling partyrsquo;s past electoral strategy in Haryana. In the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had managed to rope in high profile leaders from the State: Chaudhary Birender Singh, who had served as a minister in the previous Congress State government headed by Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and Rao Inderjeet Singh, a former Minister of State in the Congress-led UPA regime. Even during the 2019 elections, the BJP managed to defeat former Haryana Chief Minister Hoodarsquo;s son, Deepender, by fielding a former Congress MP, Arvind Sharma, against the Hooda scion. So, what lsquo;baggagersquo; did Mr. Khattar have in mind in putting up a barrier for Mr. Tanwar? Or is there another political strategy in play? Perhaps the campaign strategies and schedules of the two parties could provide a clue. For the October 21 vote, canvassing would have to end by 5 p.m. on October 19. That leaves the political parties with barely 10 days time to deploy their star campaigners. For the BJP, undoubtedly Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be the single most important factor to try and repeat its performance in the Lok Sabha polls, when the party won all the 10 seats in the State. But reports indicate that Mr. Modi may be able spare time only after Chinese President Xi Jingping concludes his visit to the country on October 12. Home Minister Amit Shah, of course, has started his campaign full swing where he has focussed on the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and a promise to implement a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Haryana. The Congress too has not deployed any star campaigner as yet but seems to have worked out a State-specific campaign strategy. Despite the central Congress leadership slamming the government over the Article 370 decision, former Chief Minister Hooda has endorsed it, arguing that families from the State that send their sons to be soldiers in the Indian Army would welcome it. Mr. Hooda has supported the NRC demand too. Instead, questions are being asked of the government led by Mr. Khattar on unemployment, law and order and especially crimes against women, farm sector issues and the lack of promised development. Apart from keeping its campaign local, the Congress also hopes to gain from a family feud within Om Prakash Chautalarsquo;s family and the splitting up of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD). Congress leaders argue that with the INLD, the third force in State politics, in a state of disarray, Haryana is likely to effectively witness a two-cornered fight between the grand old party and the ruling BJP. In such a scenario mdash; a two-way fight where local factors matter mdash; a disgruntled Mr. Tanwar and his following among the Dalit community may help the BJP by preventing a consolidation of the Opposition votes. Or, in the BJPrsquo;s calculation, effecting a split in the votes for the Congress.

2 former MLAs from Congress, 1 from INLD join BJP
ANI | Updated: Oct 06, 2019 17:00 IST
Rohtak (Haryana) [India], Oct 6 (ANI): In a big boost to the BJP, two former MLAs from the Congress and one from the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) along with many workers joined the party on Sunday in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Welcoming the new leaders, at a programme held in Tilyar here, the Chief Minister urged them to immediately join campaigning for the ruling party. INLD leader Vedpal Narang, who is considered a stalwart from the Barwala Assembly seat, Congress leaders Ramswarup Rama and Phool Singh Kheri were among the persons who took BJP‘s membership today. While Rama had served as a Cabinet Minister in former Chief Minister Bansilal’s government, Narang had won Barwala seat in 2014 from the INLD ticket. Senior Congress leader from the Sirsa seat Bhupesh Mehta too joined BJP today along with two members of the family of former minister late Chaudhary Dheerpal Singh — Arvind Gulia and Abhishek. Welcoming the leaders Khattar said, “Every leader who has a clean image is welcome in BJP. We do a background check of all the leaders who are to join the party. They are allowed to join only if they fulfil these parameters. BJP runs on principles, its sole purpose is to serve the society and the country.” The Chief Minister also attacked Congress by saying, “It is not new in Congress cadres that wherever four people come together they cannot stay together. This is very similar to what is happening in their central unit as well. There is dynasty politics, family rule in the party, that is why Congress is facing this fate.” He denied having any conversation with former Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar and said, “Only Tanwar can tell who has contacted him, there has been no conversation with him from our side. But these things keep happening in Congress.” He asserted that the party will get 75 plus seats in the elections and added that his thinking was based on the reaction of the people who joined the BJP candidates in large numbers as they were enroute to filing their nominations from Mewat region.
