Adam Gilchrist Backs Alex Carey To Reclaim White-ball Spot Via Tests Against Pakistan
Tumblr media
Boxing Day Test: Australia’s legendary wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has backed Alex Carey to reclaim his spot in the side’s white-ball team via the ongoing Test series against Pakistan. Carey is unbeaten on 16 at stumps on day three of the Boxing Day Test. His form with the bat has dipped since inflicting the stumping of Jonny Bairstow during this year’s Ashes Test at Lord’s, which sparked a huge furore. Though he’s been strong behind the stumps, Carey is yet to hit a fifty in Tests since the first Ashes game at Birmingham. “I actually like the fact that he has spoken so openly about his desire to get back into that white ball team. I see no reason for him to shut down that goal. I don’t think it changes anything in his life by the way he goes about his cricket, the way he trains.” “I don’t think he sits at home and worries about it, so it is not draining him of mental energy and perhaps affecting his Test cricket. I think it is terrific. He is hungry to play for Australia as much as he possibly can and if it never happens again, it won’t be through a lack of trying.” “I think being incentivised to keep improving and keep developing will only enhance his Test cricket as well, even if it is using white ball cricket as a motivation,” said Gilchrist on Fox Cricket’s The Follow On podcast. Carey also had a lean time with ODIs in 2023, and after the opening match of the Men’s ODI World Cup against India at Chennai, he was sidelined with Josh Inglis coming in. Gilchrist, who gave Carey his ‘Baggy Green’ cap ahead of his Test debut against England in 2021, felt the selection panel was right in opting for Inglis over Carey for the majority of World Cup campaign in India. “The decision by the selectors to go with Josh Inglis in the World Cup was justified. He contributed nicely to that World Cup win. But I think Alex Carey would have done a very serviceable job there as well. Credit to the selectors.” “They had something in mind with it and they have a World Cup to show for it, but that should not put Alex Carey off. I think he is a good all-round cricketer and I would say the main thing is that his work ethic is unrelenting and he will do that whether he is playing one day cricket or not. But I would say keep the dream alive, because that inspires him,” he concluded. Read the full article

Australia aim for bumper crowds at Ashes Tests | Cricket News
Tumblr media
SYDNEY: Cricket Australia is planning on big crowds for the Ashes series against England later this year, with venues being sold to full capacity despite ongoing concerns about Covid-19. Chief executive Nick Hockley said tickets would go on sale Monday with all stadiums sold to their limit except the 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground which will have an initial capacity of 85 percent. "The Ashes rivalry is one of the biggest in world sport, and we hope that conditions will allow as many fans as possible to attend," Hockley said in a statement late Wednesday. "In the event that capacities are reduced due to government restrictions associated with the pandemic, we of course guarantee fans full refunds." The five-Test series is due to start in Brisbane on December 8 before a day/night match in Adelaide, followed by the traditional Boxing Day Test in Melbourne then Sydney and Perth. Hockley's optimism comes despite Sydney, Brisbane and Perth currently in lockdown after a flare-up of the highly contagious Delta variant of Covid-19 which has seen sports events scamble to shift their games out of those cities. With barely five months until the Ashes starts, it remains highly unlikely that the usual hordes of Barmy Army supporters will be able to travel to Australia, given current bans on international arrivals. "Hopefully people will be able to make the trip but if they can't, then I know they'll be following very closely from England and from around the cricket world," Hockley said. Australia are due to host Afghanistan in a one-off Test in Hobart ahead of the Ashes and will play New Zealand and Sri Lanka in limited overs games following their showdown with England. Ashes 2021: Shattered and Inevitably Changing England
Ashes 2021: Shattered and Inevitably Changing England
Not that it is new, but this is another stark reminder of how tough it is for the England cricket team to travel to Australia and play Ashes – any format of the game for that matter. However, with everything going on in the past 24 months and the amount of red-ball cricket England played, compared to Australia, you may have a bit of hope that the Ashes 2021 tour may go well. Ashes 2021: Shattered…

Cricket news: England name unchanged squad ahead of third Ashes Test at Headingley
England mentions unchanged team prior to the third Ashes Test in Headingley because James Anderson remains offside
England will use the same 12-member team in the Third Ashes Test in Headingley
Star bowler James Anderson has not recovered from a calf injury
He will be evaluated during the Lancashire collision on Tuesday
Sam Curran is withdrawn from the Surrey competition to participate in the team
By Rory Dollard Press Association Cricket Correspondent
] Published: 12:10 BST, August 19, 2019 | Updated: 12:11 BST, August 19, 2019
England has named an unchanged team of 12 men for the third Ashes test in Headingley
The brevity of a four-day reversal between games meant that changes in the struggling top order at this stage were always unlikely, while James Anderson is not yet considered fit after a calf injury.
That means that the XI who drew a compelling rain-drawn draw on Lord & # 39; s on Sunday, will remain in place, accompanied by all-rounder Sam Curran, who will be withdrawn from Surrey & # 39 ; s Specsavers County Championship game against Hampshire.
Englang faces an unchanged 12-man squad to Australia featured in the third Ashestest
Anderson, who stopped after four bowling in the first test defeat in Edgbaston, would & # 39; make progress & # 39 ;.
He plays for the second XI of Lancashire in a three-day game against Leicestershire on Tuesday in Liverpool and will be continuously evaluated in the run-up to his home test in Old Trafford on September 4.
While the selectors would probably always keep their faith with their batting staff for one more game, their decision was made a little easier by low scores on Sunday from Dom S ibley and Zak Crawley.
The pair is considered the best young openers in the country and could be promoted if Jason Roy's lean run continues, but Sibley got a Warwickshire duck against Somerset on Sunday and Crawley was fired for just five.
Jimmy Anderson has not recovered from a calf injury sustained in the first test

Ashes 2019: Joe Root needs to be converting… Fifty’s fine, but greats turn them into tons
Joe Root bumped the rail on the way back to the pavilion. It had been a good inning, but not great. Valuable, but not priceless. Important, but not a determining factor. In other words, it could have been more.
The best batsmen in the world – and Root certainly belongs to that – are always looking for more.
Under the circumstances, 57 is running down for England & # 39; s first wicket, in a partnership worth 132 could not be sniffed. Root did exactly what was required of him in that position.
Joe Root had good innings but not great .. the best batsmen are always looking for more
Carrot was caught and thrown by Peter Siddle shortly after he brought his 50 to day two
When the opening pair of England were separated at 10 p.m. – coincidence ally the average total partnership for the lead batters of England against Australia in the past four Ashes series – it was Root's mission to keep the ship stable with experience, cool leadership and common sense.
And he did that. By the time Root was out, England had more than half of Australia's first full innings and were in a position to consider applying intense pressure in the second innings.
This too has not always been an easy position for England. Going the second innings against Ireland last week, England's second-wicket pair had entered into two-century partnerships in 69 innings.
The promotion of Root was meant to solve that and did so in many ways. He hit hard, he hit responsibly, he hit dutifully. His first 11 points came from 60 balls and his half century lasted 110. Everything about Roots innings was what England hoped to get from his pinched role. So why the frustration?
Root knows who he is. He knows why he is the captain of England, he knows his place and his importance for the team. And he knows who he is being measured against. Players who, in his position, are equally impressed with 57: Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and, more importantly, Steve Smith.
The previous day, Root looked at the Smith who sent Australia from the brink of disaster to modest respectability. He had gone to 144. Had he made 57, knowing what we know now, this test would almost have passed.
So that's the benchmark for Root. Conversion rate, 50s to 100s. The biggest scores made by the best batsmen, interventions that win competitions, do not only help.
Root doubles pain after being hit by the ball two of the first Ashestest
Root hit the rail because it was in it came and then came out; knowing that he had matched Smith's total from Thursday, this test would be home halfway. England would lead Australia & # 39; s first innings with nine wickets in the hand. He might not even be obliged to hit Edgbaston a second time, it all went well.
The master batsman, Sir Don Bradman, had a phenomenal conversion rate. He received 42 times 50 in his career, and 29 of them continued to earn a century. Michael Clarke and Matthew Hayden were also quite exceptional. Hayden earned 30 centuries out of the 59 times he reached the 50, Clarke converted 28 times out of 55. To stay around 50 percent in the modern game is a minor achievement. That is what Smith places among the giants of the game. His innings on Thursday were the 24th test century of his career, and on 24 occasions he was between 50 and 99. Kohli's numbers are even more spectacular: 45 half centuries, turned into 25 centuries.
Root, because all his talent is far from in this relationship. It has reached 50 in 58 occasions and 100 in 16, a conversion rate of just over a quarter. And in most series a batsman with a score between 50 and 99 will stand out, as Root often does.
The Ashes, however, demands more. It brings the best of the best and resonant statement versions. It is almost impossible to imagine that Rory Burns is now giving way to a rival opener in this series that has made a century on its Ashes debut. Regardless of his doubts about his technique, whatever alternative concepts have been considered, Burns displayed an enormous character to thrive under pressure and to carry his bat through the second day. The Ashes
The debate about dropping Jason Roy in order may linger, but Burns' position is safe. If England takes a series of lead, performance is synonymous with this test. That is what Root wanted for himself.
Not because of ego, but lead from the front, as explained on the eve of the ashes. Everyone knows that he preferably hits at four o'clock. He has imposed the order to unselfishly remove some of the pressure from the top three. It was the act of a good captain and a good man. So his mask didn't slip because he wanted the glory. He just wanted to be more useful. Perhaps it is just as well that he was rescued early by one of those curious anomalies that seem to be increasingly influencing modern cricket: the immobile bail.
England scored 53 for one, Root just nine, when he was handed out, caught behind the bowling of James Pattinson.
The assessment was immediately confirmed in contact with the bat when the ball passed – but there was a clearly perceptible sound a fraction of a second later. The birth of Pattinson had cast a glance at the stumps – not beaten, but certainly with sufficient strength to be noticed and heard – the bail had burst into their grooves and resettled. What is the matter with modern equipment? Did this happen in what the good old days might be, and did we miss it? Television is not a very new invention. Someone would have picked it up?
Root had a happy escape earlier on the day after the ball hit the stump, but the bail remained
The bail refused to fall five times, hit stumps in this summer's World Championship – all in early group games, and then not yet once. The ICC insisted that changes had been made or were required, but the evidence aroused suspicion. And this is also the first competition in the ICC World Test Championships. Let's see if it happens again.
Anyway, Root was a lucky man. If 57 had let him get it on the furniture, who knows what repairs would have been necessary if he had fallen for some figures?
Yet England, with Burns in it and Ben Stokes, jogging nicely, remains in a position of strength. And it is healthier for the English captain to take courage from it than personal statistics.
Conservatively, limiting his game in the search for elusive conversion figures, the cause of England will hardly help. And 57 in an Ash test – in any test actually – is not a disaster.
However, it is not the last word. There may be a bit too much conversation left in this game to Root's taste.
