I've just finished reading "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" (Wayfarers Series, Becky Chambers) - which sat on my to-read list for far too long and which I loved! Its been a bit since I've last read through a book in one go, completely forgetting time - So here's a little sketch of Sissix & Ashby. :)

also: be patient if your partner or friend is not ready to come out, especially if they wouldn't be perfectly safe to do so.

Rosemary Harper:

okay so the long way to a small angry planet is a sci-fi novel by becky chambers, and it's the first part of the wayfarer series (i haven't read any of the other novels yet sadly)

it's about the crew of the spaceship the wayfarer, as they get a new crew member (rosemary) and get a really big job (they're a tunneling ship that makes wormholes!!!!)

the story is mostly character driven and belongs to the sub-genre hopepunk (which is both a genre and sort of a movement? it's all about kindness as a political act and how we can only progress by working together and it's mostly wholesome)

this will be spoiler free btw, but something about the characters

rosemary harper is a human born on mars and fleeing her old life she joins the wayfarer crew as a clerk, she's sweet and a bit naif, being brought up rather sheltered

ashby santoso is the captain (also human) and he's mostly just a nice guy

dr chef is the doctor and chef (wow who would've thought) and he's a grum, which is a species on the verge of extinction. idrk how to explain it but it's cool!

kizzy shao (also human) is the mech tech and she's awesome!!! very talkative and stylish

jenks (human as well) is the other technician and he's sooooo cool and very much in love with a sentient ai

sissix is an aandrisk (different species that's coldblooded) and she's the pilot. she's ashby's best friend and also just great

artis corbin is the algaeist and he's a bit antisocial and rude but he's also interesting like i just wanna put him in a box and observe yk

ohan is a sianat pair, they're a species that gets infected by an illness called the whisperer and once infected they become a pair and can see into the sublayer of the galaxy and do cool maths and stuff that allows them to navigate when tunneling and being in the sublayer. they're also a bit antisocial but i love them v much

lovey is the ship's ai and she's awesome and very nice

i love this book so much and idk i just want everyone to read it and be more kind and help each other and maybe one day we'll be able to travel through space and meet other species and form friendships and be in harmony with the entire universe <3

Anyway Ashby Santoso is so brave for dating her. Not the forbidden love thing. The fact that she’s so. Could you imagine going on a date with Pei? My heart would stop. She’d smile at me and I’d keel over.

I started reading The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, some of The Wayfarers

I started rereading The Long way to A Small Angry Planet this week so I thought I'd add another character design to my ongoing project; Captain Ashby Santoso.

last month our friend prompted us to draw pirate au wayfarers and... i just.... i..... yeah <3 ashby and sissix are traditional and the rest were done on procreate! (bonus under the cut) also no one is at their accurate height

Imagine if the Rampion Crew and the Wayfarer Crew ever met?

The first time they meet, Ashby secretly assumes that Kai’s the captain; he’s surprised, amused and a tiny bit worried when it turns out to be Thorne.

Winter gets permission to hug Ohan the moment they see each other. Winter likes Corbin, too, which seems inexplicable to everyone around, including Corbin.

Scarlet and Sissix. They'd get along so well. Badass pilots with hearts of gold.

Dr. Chef befriends Jacin, who is eager to do an internship with him, as he wants to be a doctor ... and Dr. Chef somehow manages to get him into cooking, too.

Wolf getting to know Sissix and Dr. Chef and Ohan, and on some later occasion Pei, who are all wonderful. They tell him about all the other sapient species, too, and he comes to realize that being a mutated wolf soldier is by far not the weirdest thing the universe has to offer.

All the techs together. Cinder & Kizzy, Cress & Jenks. Imagine the shenanigans. Rosemary and Kai teaming up to be the diplomatic voices of reason, at least trying to keep them in check.

And last but not least: IKO AND LOVEY.
