Arturia Matrix 12 V Virtual Synth Plug-in at a Glance:
The Matrix 12 story, in all its glory
Arturia models it, to a tee
Unleash your creativity: the sky’s the limit!
The Matrix 12 story, in all its glory
The 1980s were an important – and interesting – decade in the synth world. Polyphony was becoming de rigueur and digital synthesis was gaining a foothold with the Yamaha DX-7 and various digital samplers, while stripped-down synths like the Juno 106 and Korg Poly 6 were making synthesis available to the masses. The stage was set for Tom Oberheim – who had been designing some of the best-sounding synths for over a decade – to introduce a no-holds-barred analog synth. And so the Oberheim Matrix 12 was unleashed upon the world in 1985. It was, indeed, an all-out assault on the state of the art, with glorious sonics and tantalizing modulation possibilities, but its near-five-grand price tag put it out of reach for all but a few fortunate souls. Around 1000 units were produced, many of which are still making music to this day.
Arturia models it, to a tee
When it comes to modeling vintage analog synths, many of us immediately think of Arturia – and with good reason. Their proprietary True Analog Emulation technology (TAE) is truly amazing, and is no doubt a critical component in some of the finest virtual synths we’ve heard. For the Matrix 12 V, Arturia modeled not only the tonal aspects of the original two oscillators and their waveforms, but the 15 filter modes as well. They knew that the Matrix 12’s famously rich, complex sound was forged by its multiple filter modes and by the numerous modulation sources and destinations on tap. With nearly endless modulation-routing possibilities, you can sculpt wonderfully organic sounds not possible with other synthesizers.
Unleash your creativity: the sky’s the limit!
The Matrix-12 V is, just like its hardware predecessor, a multitimbral instrument. In Multi mode, each of the 12 notes can voice a different sound. These sounds can then be split on different zones of your keyboard, transposed individually, played unison – you get the idea! And Matrix 12 V’s elegant software interface makes configuring all this a cinch. While the original Matrix 12 was an amazing synthesis achievement, Arturia upped the ante by adding a new effects chain for additional sound processing. They also doubled the allowable number of modulations from 20 to 40, giving you even more creative options. Factor in the ability to control all of Matrix 12 V’s parameters via MIDI, letting you perform automation in your DAW, and you’ve got a total beast of a soft synth.

Note
Do you know if there are any vst synths that come close to the sound of the Oberheim Matrix-1000?
I recommend OP-X Pro II which I’ve been using heavily for 5+ years. Arturia Matrix-12 is an emulation of of the Matrix 6 that the Matrix 1000 is based on, but Arturia’s vsts are heavyweight, graphically burdened, take a long time to load presets, etc. OP-X Pro II has the same sound with more practicality.

The 5 best new hardware synths of 2019
Tumblr media
It's no exaggeration to mention that we might be living through another golden era of hardware synths. Not goodbye ago, the market was within the doldrums, seemingly about destroyed by the increase of software, but as musicians have craved a return to physical instruments, it's risen again.
2019 has been another Platonic year, with fantastic new synths across the worth spectrum. Behringer may have dominated the headlines with its numerous clones and releases, but we've also seen plenty from the skilled brands.
Speaking of which, the instrument you've voted because the best new synth of 2019 comes from arguably the foremost famous synth manufacturer of all of them...
1. Moog Matriarch
Tumblr media
The Matriarch may be a new 4-voice paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer. A patchable powerhouse, it comes with a built-in sequencer, arpeggiator, stereo ladder filters and stereo analogue delay.
Being semi-modular, you’re ready to ready to enjoy the complete feature set straight out of the box, but with the help of 90 modular patch points, you'll push your expression and creativity to the max.
The Matriarch may be a joyous celebration of all things Moog, and a worthy winner of our poll.
2. Korg Minilogue XD
Tumblr media
This new beefed-up version of the Minilogue takes a number of the simplest bits from the prevailing pile of ‘logues. There's the digital multi-engine and expanded DSP section from the Prologue, and from the Monologue, a simplified 16-button, 16-step sequencer and microtuning options.
The end result's a nicely different flavour of Minilogue, and its unique personality makes it a hugely welcome addition to the range as an entire. Click Here
3. Novation Summit
Tumblr media
Novation's newest flagship keyboard is predicated on two of its Peak synths, with various other juicy improvements thrown certain  good measure.
Once again designed together with Chris Hugget (Chris designed the legendary OSCar), Summit feels a bit like Peak in the maximum amount as it’s a premium product with super-tight rubberised knobs, good quality faders, nice, satisfyingly clicky buttons and a transparent OLED screen with adjustable brightness.
This is a superb synth - if you’re within the marketplace for a 16-voice hybrid poly, this has got to be a frontrunner on your list.
4. Arturia MicroFreak
Tumblr media
Featuring a 12-mode digital oscillator, an analogue multimode filter and myriad sequencing options housed during a graffitied chassis, the MicroFreak’s unique stylings immediately grab your attention. It’s a bold look.
With numerous synthesis features packed into such alittle box, it’s hard to not fall crazy with the MicroFreak. The multiple oscillator modes cover a near-endless range of timbres; the filter is smooth and versatile; the Matrix invites exploratory modulation; and therefore the performance and sequencing tools are the icing on the creative cake.
5. Roland Jupiter-Xm
Tumblr media
The Jupiter-Xm is essentially a ‘best of’ Roland analogue emulation and PCM sound module with a keyboard, and its power is sort of something.
It can emulate Roland’s analogues authentically; it can vocode; it can cover a good range of sounds; it's great connectivity, battery-power, and speakers; it’s a five-output USB audio interface; it’s built robustly; and it sounds fantastic.
For anyone who’s looking to travel light with a machine that provides you all the sounds you would like, the Jupiter-Xm is simply the thing.

The 50 Best Synthesizers: Find The Perfect Synth for You
The 50 Best Synthesizers: Find The Perfect Synth for You: via LANDR Blog
Synthesizers are some of the most exciting tools in music production.
The explosion of free VST plugins means you can set up an entire arsenal of synths in your DAW without paying a cent.
But there will always be something special about the feel of physical gear under your fingers.
The hardware synth market is experiencing a renaissance with more amazing instruments available than ever before. There’s never been a better time to buy a real synthesizer for your home studio.
In this article I’ll go through the coolest and best synthesizers on the market right now.

It’s been a while. What is it with me and not being able to maintain a consistent new post regimen? No idea. Lazy fucker.
Lots of comings and goings here in the Lair Of Nefarious Machinery. Before summer I was thinking it was a Big Mistake that I’d subtracted any form of MPC from the sequencer equation here, so I looked around for something that wasn’t gonna break the bank, but had enough power to keep me happy. Enter the MPC1000. I found a black model on the auction for a not so exorbitant amount of money, and later discovered why. It was an early edition, with the destined-for-failure pad assembly.. Ugh. So an order to MPCstuff.com later and I had a new pad assembly and black pads on the way. In the interim, I decided to recap the power supply, and had swapped most of the LEDs out with blue ones. I can’t leave shit well enough alone...

Old pads, old LCD, new LEDs.

Power supply with new caps.
By the time it was all said and done, I’d spent way more than I had originally intended. I guess I should mention that I also put in JJOS so there was the cost for that to factor in too. Random fact: JJOS is actually cheaper to order from the Japanese language page. Hmmm. At least the machine itself looks and performs great now. JJOS is SO worth the investment.

A bit dark but for a black machine with black pads in a dark room, well...
I also find myself with a D-50 back in the equation. I had forgotten how weird and cool this synth is. And now with the D-05 out, and Legowelt having made a patch bank that is downloadable for free... I’m happy about all this. The only thing about the D-50 that sucks enlarged frog’s balls is the weirdo All Notes Off message it sends periodically when you release keys. Wreaks havoc on sound modules and makes sequences sound all sorts of fucked up. Thus the purchase of JJOS, as it allows filtering of All Notes Off messages at the MIDI In. No more Limpety Gimp sequences. The D-50 is so cool though. Love it.
And now a moment of silence in remembrance of lovely synths not with us anymore. I sold the Xpander. WHAT?!?!! Yeah. I know, I know. Arguably the most awesome, incredible, flexible, neato goddam synth this side of a chicken burrito but I just was not fucking using the goddam thing. A few weeks ago I had some free time at work, miraculously enough, and fiddled around with the Arturia Matrix-12v or whatever it’s called and was like ‘oh.’ Very very VERY close indeed. Seriously folks, the two major drawbacks to the Xpander, ok three, are its size, polyphony, and complexity. It’s nice to be able to Matrix Mod the fuck outta every single thing, but having to go in and route stuff in the matrix just to have velocity affect an envelope? Simple things become complex operations. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved the thing and doing sound design with it was just ridiculously fantastic. I doubt there is another synth that is even comparable, aside from the Matrix 12. Ah the 12, with those TWELVE FUCKING VOICES. Yeah six is just simply not anywhere near enough. I don’t think I programmed a sound that really didn’t suffer from stolen voices. Ah well, it was super duper fun while it lasted. In any case, now I can take care of a huge chunk of debt, and pick up a small gadget or two to boot.
May I request the moment of silence be extended so that sick synths in need of repairs may be in your thoughts (but not prayers, unless you pray to flying spaghetti monster thingy then I’m cool with that). Remember the Virus Bs? I sold them both. The most recent sale though, well, the thing decided to start acting nutty once it arrived at the buyer’s place. Pressing the Env Mode button in the LFO2 section prompted the unit to display “Store?” on the LCD, which is Not Supposed To Happen. Signal problem somewhere. I don’t have the know-how to deal with digital stuff so I’ve sent it to the person I believe is the most capable synth tech in all of Japan. If he can’t figure it out, well, it’ll be refund time and I’ll be stuck with a sick synth. Works fine as a sound module, but just don’t press that button... Argh!
What else. Ah a Black Blofeld desktop is here now, thanks to the lethal combination of Looking At Auctions While Intoxicated. Yeah, what the hell. I woke up the next morning and upon checking my mail was greeted with a ‘Congrats! You won the auction!’ mail and was like oh jeez what did I buy now? Yeah, so a Blofeld is here. Silly. What a neat synth though. I do like to have a Waldorf thingy in the lineup. Too bad they never came out with an XL version, like with 25 knobs or so on it. I played around programming the thing and was easily reminded of when I had a Microwave II XT. The same damn sounds are easily obtainable. But, you’ve got the option of using different wavetables for each of the first two oscillators (don’t think the XT did that) as well as having additional/different wavetables to use (and then there’s the sample option). Such a neat synth. Yay Waldorf. And black too. Don’t see these too often. The main encoder was fucked though. Grrrrrr. I ordered a replacement part but in the meantime I had a few leftover encoders from the Nova II, and after some sleuthing concluded that the parts were compatible, so I desoldered the wonky one and put a new one in to test it out, and waddaya know it works perfectly. Still gotta go pick up the new one I ordered but yeah it’s cool to have spare stuff.

Well that photo didn’t turn out so great. Super bright screen versus black, black and more black... Anyway. Awesome pads on this thing too. Woosh.

Yeah I have both the boutique TRs now. The 08 is fantastic. Like the 09, the 08 completely captures the mojo and FUN of using an 808 live. Programming is easier than I remember it being on the original too. And I do have experience with the originals...
Tumblr media
Hey look, your weirdo host took a selfie with an 808 this summer in Oakland. Thanks, Ernesto. Wadda pal.
Anyway... A weird discovery I made with the TR-08 is that if you have the 09 doing master clock duty, and both the TRs are set to the same MIDI channel (in my case it was just factory default), any knob changes made on the 09 will also be reflected on the 08. What? I changed the tune and decay on the bass drum on the 09 and suddenly noticed the 08 bass drum sound had changed, and was like WHAT? Yeah it’s kinda neat. Obviously the tune control for the bass drum on the 08 is there in the menu, but it lacks a knob on the panel. Neat accident. There are loads of Naysayers and Yeahbuts out there doing their best to wag their fingers and tongues at the TRs (and others in the boutique series), and I was one of these people too until I actually sat down and played with them. Fuck all that nonsense. The boutiques are fantastic. My neighbors (and wife) are definitely NOT happy about the addition of the 08 to the menagerie either. Thank you Cerwin Vega. (I have a pair of 12s doing subwoofer duty in the room).
Well. Looks like it’s time for me to go and do my dad duty and drive the fam to the Capitalist Consumption Center of choice here... Take care, my virtual comrades. Until next time.
