Chinese online patriots have a new hero: Fu Yu(付昱), also known as Wuhe Qilin (乌合麒麟), the internet artist whose satirical image of an Australian soldier slitting the throat of an Afghan child was shared by China’s Foreign Ministry's spokesman Zhao Lijian in late November. The tweet caused a row between China and Australia as the latter's prime minister demanded the post's deletion and a public apology from China. The image was a reference to a recent investigation conducted by Australia's own military that found that the country's soldiers may have committed war crimes in Afghanistan. Wuhe Qilin responded to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s request to an apology with another illustration released the following day (via @NavinaHeyden):

The image depicts Morrison covering up a dead body with what looks to be Australia's national flag while a young boy captures the attention of photographers. On Chinese social media, online patriots have cheered Wuhe Qilin “wolf-warrior” spirit. Chinese businessman Huo Lei, for example, said on Weibo:

‘Wolf-warrior’ illustrator
With over 600,000 followers on Weibo, Wuhe Qilin was born in the 1990s and became known on Chinese social media earlier this year after he published illustrations about the Hong Kong protests which align with Beijing's view of the island's pro-democracy movement. In an interview with nationalist Chinese website Guancha in June 2020, Wuhe Qilin explained how he began illustrating:
是从去年香港系列事件的时候开始的,最初的动机是因为看了一些相关新闻而感到愤怒,然后有一天看到香港某漫画家的一系列宣传暴力美化动乱的漫画作品,于是我也想用类似的方式回击,就有了第一张作品——《伪神》。
[I began drawing political illustrations] because of what happened in Hong Kong. At first I was feeling very frustrated after reading the news and one day I saw a series of cartoons drawn by a Hong Kong cartoonist which glorified the riot. I wanted to respond in the same manner, so I drew the first illustration, called “You believe in a pretender god,” and it became a series.
Wuhe Qilin calls himself “wolf warrior,” a popular way to describe — and mock — the aggressive diplomatic style adopted by Chinese diplomats in recent years (“Wolf Warrior” is in fact the title of a 2015 Chinese patriot movie). In the same Guancha interview, which was distributed by the Communist Youth League of China through its official social media channels, Wuhe Qilin talks about the “duty of artists,” an idea that resonates with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s calls for “ideological struggle”:
但我认为传递和输出意识形态其实恰恰是艺术作品和艺术家的责任之一。所以我这么做了,而且是抱着抛砖引玉的态度,希望有更多的文艺工作者能善用自身技能去为祖国和人民做一些事情。 特别是现在这个在西方利用话语权步步紧逼的特殊时期,我认为我们是需要更多传递我们国家和人民意志的文艺作品的。
I believe that the distribution and exportation of ideology is the duty of artists and their artworks. That’s why I did it and it's my attempt to stimulate similar acts. I wish more artists used their talents and skills to work for their people and country. In particular in this special period when narratives coming from the West are cornering [China]. Thus I believe we need more art that reflect the will of our country and our people.

说起图腾,自然会想到原始岩画、壁画——那些涂抹或镌刻在岩石上的图像。无论是因狩猎者对猛兽的敬畏或对征服欲望的混沌希冀,原始初民往往将与他们生存密切相关的动物形象生动的描绘于悬崖峭壁之上。看看那些���术与祈福性质的图像,绘图师们有意的将神灵或帝王的形象与身边之形象做出鲜明对比,无论是从人物塑造的大小上或正面率上,这都是可以轻易发现的事实。在我看来,史前艺术之于当下的魅力之所在,恰恰体现在对当下心理上、认识上和观念上的互通。作为原始艺术的图腾符号成为可供我艺术创作研究的一点,图腾文化作为一种文化现象,它在社会、历史、政治、阶级、种族中,都可见到体现它的社会文本与文化文本。
我曾经试图从艺术哲学的角度对图腾的意义加以考察,我发现原始岩画的图腾表象与现当代艺术视知觉图式有着内在的联系性;而图腾所隐喻的文化现象和文化意义在当下的社会、文化、历史与生活中也有着具体而强烈的体现,比如对文化中心话语的惟命是从、对西方中心主义的既定认知、以及对后殖民文化理论的盲目推崇等等,何尝不是一种图腾的崇拜。强势的西方文化集团在全球化政治与文化的领导地位,往往会强制的同化非西方的、边缘与底层的话语结构。作品中的奥巴马形象扩大化,与非洲土著人们形成鲜明的对比,使其符合图腾崇拜的表现程式。与此同时,我又将人物显示模糊化,在奥巴马形体上占据大量平面空间的同时,在彰显度上却低于其它平面各元素。从而营造一个博弈的场所,即边缘话语与中心权力话语的博弈。虽然已有众多学者,通过个人化的理论研究倡导超越东西方对抗的基本立场,解构中心权力话语的神话,但是这依旧会是一个长期的、无法逾越现实。我在选取人物个体与服饰以及佩戴的饰物上都做过细致的分析,我希望在给观众营造神秘、虚幻美感的同时,将图腾的文化意义予以彰显。
在我的作品中,除了对文化权利的探讨,有关摄影的跨界问题也是《图腾》系列作品试图尝试的关键点。继新闻摄影、纪实摄影与风光摄影极端忠实于客观客体后,现在从事摄影艺术的艺术家往往会采后期制作以期达到某种特殊效果。所以我就在思考,如果将摄影与科��技术充分的融合,达到的效果会有怎样优势与不同?基于这样的思考,在《图腾》系列作品的形式与表现技法上,我运用了后期PS合成与虚幻环境再造的手法,所以,有不少朋友说我的作品是静态版的阿凡达。但众所周知,由于视觉文化的转型,传统的艺术(绘画、摄影)在跨学科和运用科技力量的方便有所突破。大众传媒的科技革新和新媒体艺术在跨文化传播体系中,实现了宏观与微观的意识操控。而我的作品在不跨越摄影概念的同时无限的接近于新媒体艺术,即主要是以数字技术为基础,呈现具有网络、传播、互动与虚拟特征的艺术形态。由于后现代主义研究的非精英化倾向,视觉文化开始转向通俗文化。这一方面在视觉上给观众以新奇感与惊艳感,另一方面在艺术的体验上给予观众更多的互动性与丰富性。我希望通过这种具有大众文化传播特征的艺术作品,缩短艺术家与观众以及作品与观众的距离,使艺术作品不再作为一个客体、一个第三方出现,将媒介本身变成信息文本。毕竟好的当代艺术不能仅是封闭在象牙塔里无人知晓之作。但这并不意味着我在向大众献媚,我最欣赏沃霍尔的地方就在于,他不怕迎合大众与流行,而是在无限接近大众的同时不放弃批判的姿态。当代艺术需要传播,也越来越受到大众传播的影响,我的作品直接将大众传媒纳入到创作的元素中去,以期创造出新的图示语言。
对原始艺术的深刻研究以及对摄影作品的跨界尝试促成了我这一新作的完成。在我看来,好的作品不一定非要具有宏大叙事不可,重要的是创作过程中所认识到和要研究的问题。塞尚曾把自己说成是一个具有新视觉的原始人,虽然我不能与其并行而论,但对新视觉的关注在我们的艺术中是共同的。在当代艺术这样一个惊险、膨胀、花俏的大舞台上,我希望自己的创作可以在原始艺术的纯粹与神秘中沉积下来,去多做一些单纯而有意义的尝试。

The Cultural Meaning Contained in Totem

As for the totem, we will naturally think of primitive rock or mural paintings --- images daubed and engraved on the rocks. Disregarding the hunters’ awe of ferocious beasts or the vague wishes of the desires to conquer,the primitive inhabitants frequently painted on the steep cliffs vivid figures of the animals closely connected to their survival. Having a look at the images related to the witchcraft and the blessing, we can easily find that the painters purposely made a clear contrast between the figures of gods andemperors and those close to them, regardless the size of the shaped figures or their positive rate. In my opinion, the charm of prehistoric art lies on the psychological, cognitive and conceptual interflow with our days, so the totem symbols of the prehistoric art has become an issue of my art research. Thetotem culture can be found embodied in social and cultural texts, as a cultural phenomenon belonging to society, history, class and race.
I have tried to explore the meaning of the totem from the perspective of the philosophy of art, and I’ve found that there is an inherent connection between the ideas expressed in the primitive rock paintings and the visual andperceptual schema in modern and contemporary art. The cultural phenomenon and meaning implied by the totem are also embodied in the current society, culture, history and life, like the total obedience to the cultural authorities, the established recognition of Western centralism, the blind worship toward the post colonialism, are nothing else but a sort of worship of totem. The dominant Western culture, as the leader in global politics and culture, always assimilate compulsorily the non-Western, marginal and low classlanguage systems. In my works, the figure of Barack Obama is enlarged, making a big contrast with the African aboriginal people, so as to accord with theschema of the totem worship. At the same time, I blur the figures: the figureof Barack Obama occupies a large planar space, but the highlight intensity islower than the other planar elements. As a result, a place of gaming is created, which stands between marginal discourse and central discourse. Although many scholars, by means of individualistic theories, advocate for overcoming the radical antagonism between East and West, as well as for deconstructing the fairy tale told by the central power, such a reality will behard to surpass yet for a long time. I’ve analyzed carefully each figurechosen, its clothes and accessories, because I wish to highlight the culturalmeaning of the totem, while creating a mysterious, illusory beauty for the audience.
In my works, except for the investigation on cultural rights, the interdisciplinary questions related to photography represent another key pointthe work series Totem attempt to experiment. After the news photography, documentary photography and scenery photography, nowadays the artists engaged in photography always make use of the post-production work in hope of creating some special effects. As a result, I’ve thought, if merging photography and scientific technology, what advantages and differences would be achieved from that effect? Basing on this idea, in terms of form and performance techniques in the work Totem, I made use of the Photoshop composition and recreated illusory environment. Consequently, many friends have said that my work seemslike a static Avatar. However, as is known to all, with the transformation of the visual culture, the traditionalart (painting, photography) has made a breakthrough in the interdisciplinary field and in the use of technology power. Within the intercultural communication system, technological innovations in multimedia and new media art have achieved both a macro and micro conscious mastery. While my works, which do not leap over the bounds of conceptual photography but get very close to thenew media art, namely based on the digital technology, they present an art form characterized by Internet, transmission, interaction and fictitiousness. Due to the tendency to non-elite culture in postmodernist research, the visual culture has started to move towards the popular culture. On the one hand, visually it impresses the audience with its sense of wonder and amazement; on the other hand, it gives the audience more interaction and enrichment regarding the artexperience. I hope that with the help of such kind of art works, which same as popular culture can easily spread, the distance between artist and audience as well as that between works and audience can be shortened, which would make the art works appear not as a subject or a third part, and the media themselves to change into information texts. After all, the good contemporary art works can’t just be confined in the ivory tower, unknown to anyone else. But this doesn’t mean I am trying to please the public: where I appreciate most Andy Warhol is that he wasn’t afraid to cater to the audience and the fashion, but he didn’t desist from his attitude of criticism, even while approaching the audience. Contemporary art should be spread-disseminate and be more and more affected by the mass media transmission; I have put the mass media directly into my works, with the hope of creating a new graphic language.
Thanks to the deep research on primitive art and the interdisciplinary experiment on photographic works, I’ve completed this new work. In my opinion, a good work doesn’t need a long story, what important is the issue recognized and studied during the creation process. Paul Cezanne called himself a primitive with new vision; even though I can’t be put in the same category with him, we share a common focus on the new vision in our art. On such a breathtaking, expanded and fancy big stage of contemporary art, I hope my works can settle down in the pure and mysterious primitive art, and I will make a few more simple but meaningful attempts.

Second, in the personality assessment, the result tells me that prefer to work on projects where I could innovate and create some new ideas. I will enjoy the process that I could deal with those challenges and find some new solutions. In most cases, I will take an objective look at the current condition and solve those problems after careful analysis. In addition, because of knowing well about my teammates and having a good command of what they want, I could get on well with my teammates and we will cooperate harmoniously to achieve our goals. This assessment gives very different recommendations for my job choices compared to my first assessment. It says that I will be more suited to jobs like engineer, scientist and analyst.

Third, in the skills assessment, I chose my top three skills, managing people, social perceptiveness and speaking. I have been leaders in my class or the associations that I have participated in. My classmates once said that I did thingsmethodically and I understood others’ thought and strengths, thus they agreed with my arrangement in most instances. As a matter of fact, I also believe that I have advantages to understand others because I am good at observing and listening. Conflict is not bound to happen, but it depends on whether you have been aware of the risks ahead, which means you have a good knowledge of social status and relationship. In the meanwhile, I am not afraid of expressing my ideas and I know how to speak will not be heard aggressive. In the values assessment, I chose three top factors that I will take into account in choosing jobs are creativity, income and working outdoors. I prefer to develop my ability to create and innovate in working rather than following the “rules”. In addition, I pay much attention to income because I am a person who likes to try new things and travel, which needs a large amount of money. Besides, I do not like working indoors and sitting at one place for too long. Working outdoors will be better for my health. In the fifth assessment, my three most obvious characteristics are eager, sharing and inquiring.“Eager” means I like to persuade others and transfer my thoughts and suggestions to others, therefore, some of my friends always say that it seems that my energy will never run out. “Sharing” is consistent with my former performance in the first assessment. The third description “inquiring”, to some degree, contradicts to my former evaluation that I like to work with people, which describes that I prefer to prove my ideas or find solutions by analyzing.

My performance in the five self-assessments has been combined by this system and it says that there are no suitable occupations which could satisfy all of those descriptions for me. It is right because I believe that I am a person of complex personality, which has decided my choosing for my college major difficult. However, at last, I made my decision because it is difficult for us to find a perfect andideal solution but we could try our best to achieve what we want most. Choosing a career is in the same way. Before starting our career path, we have to decide where to begin. There is an article from the column “Find Your Passion” in The Muse. It tells me 6 fresh ways to find my passion. First, we should put the psychology in a correct place. We should not have such thought that I cannot make it. There must be someone who does what he loves to do. So, why is not me? Second, my past experience is of great value for me. We could find our most interested ingredients from our most enjoyable experience, and those factors will be involved in our future career. Third, those ingredients may not be associated with each other at first but we can find our umbrella where they will adjust to fit with each other. Fourth, if I want to find a job which I not only enjoy but also can make money with. I need to be proactive to find some opportunities rather than waiting for others to find me. If I have to polish my skills to satisfy the requirements, then just do it. Fifth, do not give up your love just because someone says you will not win. But rebellion is not the only thing we have to be engaged in, we could persuade them to trust us. Last, what we want to do sometimes needs us to take challenges, which means we should be brave enough. But not the whole path of realizing our dream is full of thorns, we could find our comfort place after making efforts.

Morris Philipson argues that, Leonardo da Vinci can be viewed ‘as an ideal of fulfillment in an age of frequent frustration, as an idea of completeness in an era of fragmentation (Leonardo da Vinci, Aspects of the Renaissance Genius [1966], p. vii)’. During the whole life, da Vinci achieved huge success in various areas, including drawing, sculpture, architecture, mathematics, physics, astronomy, geology, physiology and music. His knowledge and understanding of the world demonstrated in his paintings, projects and notebooks still amazes in the present age (208). Generally, da Vinci embodied the concept of the “universal man” described by Machiavelli.
Drawing is one of da Vinci’s greatest achievements. Mona Lisa presents his exquisite artistic attainments. It is an oil painting that da Vinci directly drew on poplar. It successfully shaped an image of wealthy woman in the rising period of capitalism. Woman in the drawing sit elegantly and has a delicate smile, and the deep and serene landscape in the background greatly present da Vinci’s atmospheric perspective. da Vinci’s use of sfumato imitates the effects of human vision, and it was his own variation on the chiaroscuro technique, which was developed by other masters during the early Renaissance (211). Under the influence of humanism, da Vinci attached importance to the emotion and feelings of human beings. He masterly combined the colorful inner world and beautiful appearance of the figure, and paid much attention to the corner of the eye and the mouth of the figure, which show the feeling and emotions. The figure’s mysterious smile attracts great concerns of various people, and makes them take time to explore the secrete behind the smile. Furthermore, in terms of composition, da Vinci changed previous habit in drawing portraiture. He did not draw a side bust portrait but frontal bust portrait with a higher perspective point. A pyramid-shaped composition makes the figure seem more elegant and sedate. Besides, a pair of hands of Mona Lisa are soft, tender, and plump, which show her gentle, identity and social status. Therefore, people could feel da Vinci’s brilliant technique and heightened awareness in nature. According to da Vinci, painting is the highest art and it enables painters to create all enchanting beauties with their imaginations (211).
Da Vinci’s abilities are also showed in other areas. In Proportions of the Human Figure, da Vinci demonstrated how the human figure generate the perfect geometry of square and the circle through the proportions (209). He let people know the mathematics of the nature and pay attention to human themselves. As he believed that, human beings were less reliable than the machines, he designed a large number of devices, which cannot be found at his time. He also outlined certain versions of modern technology such as the airplane and the tank (209). Even though da Vinci did not make most of his design become the truth, his thought and knowledge of the world revolutionizes mechanics and anatomy.
In general, da Vinci embodied the concept of “universal man” described by Machiavelli. His achievement in painting, mathematics, machines and other areas amaze the world.

潘星 Xing Pan
加利福尼亚大学河滨分校教授 Professor, University of California Riverside
潘星教授致力于电子商务、移动商务、市场营销领域的前沿研究与创新, 是美国营销学会(AMA)、营销科学院(MSI)、互动营销教育基金会(DMEF)等学术机构的学术与科研基金评审人及十余个工商管理学及经济学领域 SSCI 国际学术期刊的编委与专家评审人, 美国创新领导力学院(AILA)执行院长。 他的研究荣获了包括美国营销科学学会最佳博士论文奖、华盛顿经济协会最佳科研奖、美国电子商务研究中心国际科研奖等在内的诸多荣誉。 他受邀为美国联邦政府撰写区域经济与商业发展的专家评估报告,并在诸多国际学术会议发表学术报告与演说。

西安电子科技大学电路与系统专业硕士毕业,在校期间,多次获得国内各类科技创新的奖项,毕业之后,成为蒜泥科技联合创始人,曾参与设计仿人机器人,教育机器人,Visbody一代扫描仪等项目。联合创立makerbeta科技自媒体,担任技术总监及节目主播。“MakerBeta超能实验室”系列视频包含科技DIY及相关知识内容,选取电影、游戏、动漫及生活场景中的创意和脑洞为话题,采用脱口秀的方式,秉持“有趣、有货、有脑洞”的创作宗旨,教大家用身边的材料和工具制作各种有趣、酷炫的作品。目前,makerbeta超能实验室粉丝量突破80万,全网播放量达到1个亿,团队于今年的五月份参加出彩中国人的录制。

因为还想冒险! 放下美术教职,从台湾成功大学创意产业研究所毕业后,开始跨界与不同的创作者合作。私下爱運動愛文艺酷爱机器人,一切跟新奇科技與創意設計相关的事物都会让她眼前一亮。毕业后创立个人设计工作室,提供专业的谘询与设计服务。2012年加入台湾智库,协助打造政府支持的第一个青年开放共创平台:DOIT TAIWAN,以科技为核心,聚焦跨域创新与创业,与超过百组国际创客串接本地生态圈。2015年,加入柴火,开发第一套科技文创产品 – 造物吧,在2016年来到深圳成为柴火造物中心的创始团队核心,带领年轻的团队,从无到有将柴火造物中心的样貌呈现在全球创客眼前,致力协助造物中心完成最重要的目标:串接产业与创客合作。

Carrie Leung是深美国际学校的老师,她坚信通过动手造物、分享和协作的方式能够给学生以及社区赋能,促进其成长。在过去的5年里,Carrie在深圳不断实践这个理念,通过项目式学习,建立自由、双语和开源���平台,包括教育创新网络、南山学校Maker Faire、创客徽章联盟等。通过这样的平台让公立、私立以及国际学校师生更容易获取资源,一起协作、共同成长。在此之前,她在美国旧金山的科技和金融领域积累了超过十年的丰富经验。

Joseph是南山教育局国际化和改革专家顾问,南山教育局督学,育才教育集团育才中学,育才教育集团育才四小,港湾小学外籍副校长。作为南山教育国际化的积极参与者,他与学校领导及老师共同谋划南山社区与国际城区合作关系,倡导学生为中心教学模式,建设跨学科教学大纲。在三所充满创意的学校任职期间,他先后提出个国际化项目,如为当地创客,STEAM教育者及设计思维教育者与境外英语教育组织搭建平台实现分享质疑教学法英语学习目标。他还在三所学校引入课堂教学工具促进教师专业发展,还为当地学校缔结境外姊妹校。约瑟夫目前是美国东北大学组织领导学在读博士。他是费城德雷塞尔大学国际教育学理学硕士。在他毕业以后,他远赴加纳考察高等教育部分教育国际化和教育私有化。Joseph目前是美国东北大学组织领导学在读博士。他是费城德雷塞尔大学国际教育学理学硕士。在他毕业以后,他远赴加纳考察高等教育部分教育国际化和教育私有化。约瑟夫是圣十字学院经济学学士。

深圳市南山区教育局教育科学研究中心教研员,南山少年创新院干事。深圳大学化学学士,武汉大学经济法学硕士。2015年受深圳市教育局委派赴美国纽约学习教育管理和中小学创新教育。在南山少年创新院工作期间,主持策划了创新实验室评审与资助,分院评审与建设,小院士选拔与培养,南山区教育科技节,STEM项目开发与实施,创新教育教师培训等项目。主要研究方向为跨学科创新教育项目、课程的开发与实施。
俞瑞芳 Rain Yu
创客教育实践者 Parent, Advocate of Maker Education清华大学动力工程和工业工程双学位。十五年华为研发IT的规划、架构、实施、管理的经验。五年的创业和天使投资经验,专注于互联网、智能硬件、机器人等行业。业余辅导孩子的机器人学习,带领孩子们做的机器人创意作品,连续两年获得深圳市青少年机器人创意赛的冠军,深圳首届学生创客节的特等奖,全国创新教育大会创客路演作品一等奖。

“项目式学习”教学模式领导者、倡导者 Project Based Learning Leader & Advocate
Twila Busby在K12教育领域有20多年经验,倡导“项目式学习PBL”教学模式,并为该模式培养了一批教学教师。一直以来,Twila为多所美国学校开发教育课程并获得多个奖项,在中国学校践行“项目式学习”教学模式,指引中外教育机构走向创新。Twila在深美国际学校任职期间,建立了PBL状态墙,检测PBL践行动态,她也参与了蛇口学校Maker Faire的发起组织工作。她在深美学校创办了深圳校园内的第一个创客空间,并且主张让每一个教室都成为一个创客空间,让创意结合理论,支持学生们把想法落地。
罗朝宣 Chaoxuan Luo

中国教育学会会员,全国奥林匹克数学一级教练,是全国教师创客联盟常务理事,广东省第三批骨干校长培养对象,广东省教育学会校“校本本课程专业委员会”理事,港湾学校创建者,自贸区第一所公立学校的创建人、校长,曾任南山实验学校荔林小学部部长,文德教学设备有限公司总经理, 在多个岗位上历练,参与南山区4所学校的改造和创建,都都取得显著成绩。长期致力于信息技术与课程深度融合以及课程综合化的研究,主持和参与多项国家级、省市、区级课题的研究,率先将创客文化教育导入学校课程建设,撰写的多篇论文在研讨会中获奖,在国家级刊物上发表,制作的案例和电子教材由国家级出版社出版发行。

北京师范大学汉语国际教育专业。曾在英国曼彻斯特当地十余所中小学教授中文,回国后执教于多所国际学校,对中西方教育有深刻感受。经过对比、分析,并结合PBL教学理念,开发适合国际学校学生学习的中文及语文课程。
陈杰,深美国际学校中文教师,接触项目教学法(PBL)三年有余,参与筹划和参展深美国际学校年度学习成果展三次;北京语言大学教育硕士,曾任教于北京交通大学、北京外国语大学、北京语言大学等,教授不同国别和语言水平的留学生中文,并曾以交流学者的教授身份赴韩工作一年,在韩国交通大学中国语系教授本科生中文。她对于差异化教学以及新型教学改革带来的教育成效深有体会,从教以来一直致力于高效有趣的新型教学方法和方式的探索和应用;早期曾经在高中短暂任教两年,对于中国传统教学方式方法和教学改革有过实践性的感知认识和切身体验。

James致力于为创客教师、学生和学校提供技术和服务,帮助其建设教育创客空间、开展创客教育项目。James来自美国加利福尼亚,目前已在深圳生活了五年。他运用自己的工程知识和学术思维,分享开源工具,举办公开的会议,投入时间精力为深圳不同教育机构服务,营造一个系统性、创新性和学习型的造物/学习氛围。
