When Dark Schneider adopted Arshes Nei, he was going through a "horse girl" phase. Obsessed with this small child he tells her to get on all fours, run around and Neigh like a horse. He keeps yelling at her day after day to "Neigh!" So much so that she thinks, "Neigh" is he name.

Dark Schneider eventually comes to his senses and elongates "Neigh" to Arshes Nei. He hates horses now and pretends that never happened.

Bastard!! - Everything I hated about anime in the 80s and 90s

My wife and I watched Bastard! on Netflix this week. More accurately I should say we tried to.

It's a new adaptation of a 1980s shone anime that was written by Kazushi Hagiwara, who was so in love with heavy metal that the main kingdom is named Metallicana. The main character is named Dark Schneider, after the Accept metal guitarist Udo Dirkschneider. Like the list goes on and on.

This is a throwback anime that is faithful to the time period the original style and content of that period. If you like that, you will love this.

However, this is the exact kind of thing that turned me off of anime in the 80s and 90s, and stopped me from really watching it until the pandemic in 2020.

It's not really the nudity and near sex that is a problem for me. It's the threat of rape, obsession with virginity, and nonconsensual nature of the sexual pairings that really made me turn away. Not to mention the incest.

I got through the 12th episode, and just gave up. I am normally a completionist for everything, so this was difficult.

It started with the protagonist, Dark Schneider. He's a horny arrogant jerk to just about everyone, but despite treating every woman he runs into like dirt, they all fall into horny love with him. He's told no sexually and continues, during which the women are so taken with his skills they fall for him.

He inhabits a 14 year old boy, Lucien, and comes out whenever a virgin kiss is given to him with a spell. His guardian is Tia Noto Yoko, and she seems to alternately pine for Dark Schneider but only if he was actually Lucien.

Even weirder, we find that Dark Schneider adopted and raised Arshes Nei, who he also then becomes lovers with. In the middle of a fight, he starts booping her boobs like they had secret fight winning horny buttons in them while telling her he knew everything about her body.

We get intermittent flashbacks to him raising her as a child to him sleeping with her as an adult. The two relationships, Lucian and Yoko, and Arshes and Dark Schneider's, feel very gross and like pedophilia grooming incidents.

I am not really into incest porn, so the idea of a parental guardian figure lusting after and sleeping with their charges felt a little too like Woody Allen and his marriage to his stepdaughter, if you know what I mean.

I could have struggled through all that grossness if there was a story to consider, but after 12 episodes I feel like there was 3 paragraphs of story repeated over and over and over, some fight scenes, and too many questionably consensual PG-13 sex scenes. Like why focus on sex so hard, then do it PG-13?

Everyone seems to love it, but both my wife and I abandoned it at episode 12. We struggled that far because we thought at least we could watch it all, but then realized there was something like 24 episodes. We gave up. I have better things to do with my life.
