poster design research:
Aron Jancso - ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/mil3n/5141521099/?reg=1&src=fave ) ‘Positive to Negative’. I liked this typographic poster as its looking at positive and negative space - with my opacity typeface, I'm sort of looking at the absence of solid colour, so this poster was drawn to me. I also really liked how jumbled the letters were - this made for some interesting shapes! could I play around with the composition of my letterform in a jumbled way like this? I only have 4 letterforms though. could I create more? I don't really have the time for that in this short brief. could I repeat the letters I have made in my poster?
I found this poster on Pinterest - I really liked the divided down the middle - I could use this technique to show my opacity style as well as the solid black. This would allow me to show people what the typeface originated as and show the development of my typeface! I also really love the stark contrast in this poster. Its very eye-catching - having the background the opposite of the letter colour makes for a very dynamic look. maybe this is something I could try! it would definitely draw you in.
I also fond this one on Pinterest - I really liked the ombre of shadow behind the typeface - this makes the ‘g’ look much more dynamic and creates a lot of depth! I quite like the idea of multiple versions of my typeface, instead of a colour ombre, could I do an opacity ombre? to show the process of folding to the solid version? the more you layer the paper, the more the opacity would solidify! this might be an interesting way of showcasing the system behind my typeface.
Thomas Kurppa - ( https://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/thomas-kurppa-graphic-design-170120 ). I like the structure of this poster - its simple, yet looks professional. I think the writing that goes along side the letterforms helps make it look more finished! I quite like having this minimal look - it lets you focus on the interesting shapes of the typeface! “It’s exciting to see how small aspects in their design change the perception of a letter and how letters combined can shift our ability to read a message or word.” - I like how he wants to see how far he can push typography and evolve it into something else! Maybe I could try and show evolution in my type - how it evolved from the paper strips, folded, to the letterform. could this be done through animation? but i’m not very good with aftereffects and this is a very short project.
Overall, this typographic poster research was very insightful, and has given me lots of ideas that I might want to put forward in my own poster. I quite like the idea of playing around with the evolution of my typeface - like Kurppa. I could do this through messing round with opacities (inspired by the orange ‘g’ poster) or through animation!? I could also just play around with the composition of my poster - could I jumble up the words and create a pattern? or have more formation like Kurppa’s box of letters?
I now want to create rough ideas, inspired by this research, to help produce my own typographic poster for my typeface, ‘paper’.

Typographic poster research
I decided to look on Pinterest for some typographic posters, as part of our brief is to create an A3 poster show casing our typeface and 3 postcards to go with it. I have never really made a typographic poster so looking for some inspiration really helped me.
https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/76842737379947354/
This poster is showcasing Avenir and the arrangement of the letters at the top is quite eye-catching and different, like how some of the letters are coming off the corner of the page as enhances the nature of the type having straight lines at the bottom of each letter. The rest of the text on the poster is written in avenir, showing how the type would work in different formats. Information hierarchy very clear on the page.

I like how the designer has almost deconstructed the letter and shown how it has been created. This is quite an interesting concept I could play with in my own poster, perhaps showing the shapes that made the letter and where they came from
Tumblr media
I don’t like this poster as much as the one above, doesn’t bring the typeface to life due to the lack of colour and content.

Aron Jancso Sensaway Pro 2010, he was best known for his experimental type projects.
This poster showcases the typeface as a whole alphabet, like how the letters link together and shows how they could work against one another, which is something I want to within my own poster. Little bit of text at the bottom with the name of it and specimens.

I really like how this poster shows the letters individually, a lot of space around them and how perspective is used on the page. I think it would be more effective if they were all using the same perspective and aligned. Like the use of the coloured type saying what the font is called, really stands out against the black.

I think it is quite interesting how the different letters have been over layer with different transparencies, however it is not the most readable and doesn’t showcase the typeface and what it can do.

I quite like this poster, the white typeface against the black background is very contrasting and brings the type to life. Quite like how it isn’t too organised, however this doesn’t really reflect the typeface and its structure. In my poster I want to make sure its tone reflects the nature of my typeface.

Aron Jancso - Typography Research
Tumblr media
From reading the book ‘How to Use Type’, I discovered typographer Aron Jancso. His use of type to create imagery works well with the themes his work is about, for example, cycling and the type makes up the picture of a man on a bike.

Napi jöjjön_14&15: Ogaki (2009) és Qalto (2012) // Jancsó Áron (1986 – 2015)
Áronnak ezzel a két fontjával fejezem be a jöjjön-sorozatot. In these pieces I really love the bold use of shape to create an interesting form compositionally. Also the use of scale, using large and small delicate text makes the design look detailed and intentional.
