your heart, love (has such darkness) | chaptered fic, roman empire inspired fantasy au, enemies to lovers, rated e, 48k [fic post | fanart]
“Who did this to you?“ The question escaped Max in a low growl, sounding more animal than human. Charles’ eyes widened for a fraction of a second before narrowing, eyebrows knitting together in confusion. “Your men,“ he answered, as if it was obvious. And it was. “No, who exactly?“ Max hissed, “because I ordered them not to hurt you and I will cut their fucking heads off for defying their commands.“ The provinces' war against the empire has been raging for years, but finally, Max Verstappen and his rebel army are close to bringing their enemies to their knees. The dire situation has the empire's most powerful warrior, Charles Leclerc, il predestinatio, running right into Max's arms in an attempt to stop him before it's too late. Max wants the empire's darling for himself, but their relationship is much more complex than that of a villain and hero, king and concubine. Though Charles is chained and collared, nothing is really as it seems.
bare your teeth verse | on-going series, a/b/o drivers au, enemies to lovers, rated e, 3-4k each [fic post | fanart]
part one: see me bare my teeth for you
It has been five years since Max gave Charles his mating bite on a rainy day in Val d'Argenton. Five years of Charles keeping his head down and ignoring it had ever happened. Until the day he set foot in the paddock, freshly signed to drive in F2, his dreams becoming true. Only there is one problem: his mate is too close for his body not to react.
part two: bound with the curse don't want this bubble to burst
Charles has finally made it to Formula 1. But reaching this milestone forces him closer to Max than ever before. On and off the track - they fight, and they clash. Grudging acceptance bubbles over into rage once again after the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix, with Charles on Max's private jet and nowhere to run.
part three: it feels better biting down
Charles has not stepped foot outside of his apartment for the entirety of the lockdown. He has not seen anyone, especially not Max, so he is shocked to find him attempting to break his door down, deep in his rut and desperate to get his hands on Charles. For once, the tables have turned and Max is the one out of his mind with want.
part four: i cut my teeth on people like you
Ever since spending his rut with Charles, Max's jealousy has been going haywire. It doesn't help that their relationship is more strained than ever. Winning his first championship and seeing his omega congratulating his biggest rival instead of him is the final straw.
late night devil (put your hands on me) | one-shot, vampire/priest au, rated e, 5k [fic post | inspo art | fanart]
Welcome to the Halloween Special! “Don’t worry, I’m a priest here at St. Fiacre, you are very welcome. I can call for a doctor in the morning, as well,” Max explained. As he turned towards the man, coming eye to eye with him for the first time he was suddenly struck by the beauty of him. “It is not that, I would love to come in,” the man offered, a shy smile curling over his mouth and creating a set of dimples on its corners. Max tried not to stare. “However, I simply cannot. I am not allowed, so to speak,” he explained. “What,” Max looked at him, eyebrows raised. “Why?” The man flashed a broad smile and Max could not avoid looking. What he saw were fangs.
the world is so much wilder than you think (all the mermaids have sharp teeth) | chaptered fic, siren charles au, get-together, rated e, 22k
Charles' eyes focussed on him, bright green, not in a scary, alien way, but more like the sunlight had caught in his irises, making them appear brighter and more saturated than usual. Only there was no sun. It was the middle of the night. Max felt an itch in his fingers and feet, as if he was being pulled forward magnetically. Charles blinked again, and it was gone. Max sat back on the chair with a grunt. He hadn’t noticed he had been in the process of standing up. “What?” he asked, not even sure what exact question to phrase. “Oh, you know, this is the part where you find out that supernatural creatures exist?”
i'm starving, darling (come and get some) | series, grid slut charles au, rated e, 5k
Well, it wasn’t like he was actively looking at his ass. It just seemed to always be in his line of sight. Like in Baku, when Max couldn’t stop himself from constantly glancing over to where Charles and Checo stood waiting for him to finish his interview because Charles kept dropping things. His racing-driver-instinct-eyes had immediately snapped over to the exaggerated movements in his peripheral vision and he couldn’t even tell what exactly it was Charles dropped because all he could see was a full view of butt in a fire-red racing suit. Max had considered whether he had gone insane and had started hallucinating due to a recent lack of sexual gratification (sue him, but he was a busy man) and Charles’ proximity and relative attractiveness (it was off the charts). And now this. Max was finally, thoroughly convinced. He’s doing this on purpose, he thought. His phone pinged with a message.
called to the devil (and the devil said hey) | one-shot, charles goes to red bull au, get-together, rated e, 16k
Charles joins Red Bull in 2025 in the hopes of finally winning the championship in a reliable car. Max is a suspiciously supportive teammate. Or: Max Verstappen's very secret retirement plan.

hot in it (no stopping it) | series, grid slut charles au, threesome, rated e, 5k
14:43 [from Max Verstappen] [image attached] come over and bring a long pair of pants for charlie Carlos opened the message to view the picture and had to suppress a groan, lest the mechanics next to him would suspect anything. It was a shot of Charles, he recognized by his bright red shorts, even shorter now that they were pushed up and bunched around his upper thighs by a big hand that could only belong to Max. Beneath Max’s hand was an angry-red looking bite mark. The perfectly straight row of teeth indented into the skin was easily recognizable.

maneater (make you spend hard) | series, grid slut charles au, rated e, 2k
“Do you like getting head, Carlos?” he asked, then. He had never claimed to be smooth nor subtle. He watched as Carlos’ eyes became comically wide before he narrowed them again, staring at Charles intently. “What?” “Blowjobs? Getting your dick sucked?” Charles tried again, a sly smile on his face, being very aware that Carlos’ question might not have been due to a lack of understanding of the terminology used at all. Carlos blinked at him and he swore the blush on his cheeks got a tad bit darker. “I mean— yes, doesn’t everyone?” he rasped, voice slightly airy. Charles’ tongue slipped out to wet his lips and he watched Carlos’ eyes flit down and back up to his eyes in a matter of milliseconds. “Sure,” he hummed, “but I also like giving it,” he grinned.
charles/grid
greed (i want it all right now) | one-shot, sex pollen, magical pussy, gangbang, dead dove for dubious consent, rated e, 9k [fic post]
Charles has to sneeze, and laughs. His Secret Santa seems to have had his fun with it, adding some fake snow to douse him in. He does not notice the nervous glances the producers behind the camera share. He reads the card, out loud, but falters as he tries to process what is written there in elegant cursive. “Since you are a lazy gift giver I will help you out this year,” it says. Charles furrows his brows. Or: Charles wakes up with a pussy. The grid is delighted.
yuki/pierre
inches in between us (i want you to give in) | one-shot, friends to lovers, rated e, 8k
4 times yuki sent pierre into gay panic + the one time he gave in alternative title: yuki being outrageous and pierre losing his shit (canon)

Warnings/ NSFW, dark smut. Dark chapter. Oral sex, orgasm denial, popping cherry, taking turns, explicit language.
Halloween one shot/ ransom, ari, Steve, Lloyd and andy.
Your palms grew sweaty as you swallowed a soft gulp. You retake a double look to ensure your eyes are not deceiving you. In which this case, they are not. You are the only one at the pumpkin patch. There were no other cars but yours in the parking lot, which confused you.
You thought there would be a party of some sort since you received an invitation.
Y/N L/N,
CONGRATULATIONS, you have been selected for an invitation to join a special event that only happens once a year.
October 31st, Halloween. Time- 5 before sunset.
We take formality and punctuality quite seriously, so please don't be late or I'm afraid, there might be consequences.
Oh and don't forget to wear your scariest costume! There will be a contest and the first winner will win a special prize.
                             Hell Raisers Five.
You double-check the date and time on your phone.
10-31-2023
Time 5:58 P.M
Sunset.
You look over your shoulder, The sun has set. But what happens now?
There's no one here, so certainly it is not a party. Could it be a prank? A lot of people do pranks on Halloween but you don't have any friends unless books and fictional characters count. In that case, you have a whole army.
You begin to think about who would invite you here. It takes a moment till your mind goes to the football quarterback jock from your high school.
Ransom Drysdale.
He is awful to you, and always picks and makes fun of you. If it's not slamming your books down to the floor, it's keeping you locked in, in the girl's locker room naked after taking your clothes.
He and his group of heathens own your high school or they like to think so. They are nothing but trouble and you only hoped that this phase Ransom has with you is only that, a phase till he gets bored with you and moves on to torment the next girl.
If it wasn't for the crow cawing, you would have remained in place with your thoughts. Startling, your eyes lift to the crow who flies over to a sign. You squint your eyes and read, "Trick or Treating Corn Maze"
Perhaps the party is in the corn maze?
You look over your shoulder at your car. It's getting dark, and you contemplate leaving but if you do, there might be consequences, according to the anonymous invitation. But if you stay and go through the corn maze, it could be worse.
You have no idea what or whose intention they have with you.
It could be dangerous...
Or it could be a treat...
Well, you're about to find out. You take a step, inhaling a deep breath. You're already dressed and here, might as well find out.
You walk over cautiously, passing the sign, the crow staring at you, tilting its head to the side, cawing. You weren't afraid, although maybe you should be.
Freddy and Jason might be in there waiting for you.
You notice a flashlight hanging off a corn branch, you take it as a sign that the flashlight is for you. You grab it, turn it on, you continue to walk.
In Horror movies, the girl would say "Hello" and "Anyone there?"
But you knew fucking better. You remain silent and wait for the boogeyman to pop out and eat ya. You get to the first corner, and you stop to a halt as you see a figure standing, with a scarecrow mask on his face.
This is the part where you widen your eyes and gulp. Okay, maybe you are scared. He lifts his head from the floor and stares at you through his mask. You remain frozen, Your hand holding the flashlight up to him, shakes uncontrollably.
He strides over to you, he keeps getting bigger and bigger as you keep getting smaller and smaller.
You're dead.
You're positive as Ion television, this masked scarecrow is going to murder you, There's no way he's going to give you a treat... Right?
Your breath hitches as he towers menacingly over you making you feel ten times smaller than before.
"W-who are you?" You stutter through clatter teeth.
He tilts his head to the side and back, you can feel his eyes checking you out from head to toe. "Scarecrow." His dark tone sends shivers down your spine.
"I-i mean your real name." You sigh.
"Scarecrow." He repeats, crossing his arms.
You let out another sigh, as he is not going to tell you and you don't recognize him through his mask. As of right now, you only know him as...
Scarecrow.
"Till how long will you be scarecrow?" You ask. He somehow takes another step closer to you. Closing whatever inches of distance there was any left.
"Till the course is complete." He says cryptically.
You were about to ask what he meant but he foresaw your question and shook his head before your lips parted.
He looks down at your costume and you can imagine a smirk crawling on his face. "I thought witches were supposed to look ugly." There was a hint of sarcasm in his tone.
"They're not ugly. That's just how movies and shows portray them." You say.
He hums in response.
"Well, Witchy let's begin, Trick or treat?" His tone changed back to dark.
You gulp loudly, nervous about what to answer. "T-treat?" You say in question.
He chuckles. "Good choice." He unzips his pants and pulls them down, dropping them to his shoes along with his briefs.
You gasp as he's sprung free.
You were expecting candy or at least a fucking sticker but not a hard length leaking with precum.
He muses a light chuckle. "Don't be so scared Witchy, you did say treat, so come and get it."
This is the part where you turn around and RUN. But you don't and not just because he could easily catch up to you but because a part of you didn't want to.
You want your treat.
Your legs tremble as you slowly kneel down before him. You stare at his hard throbbing erection and you feel a pool of wetness dripping down.
You glance at him through your eyelashes. "Um, I never-
You couldn't complete your sentence as he grabbed you by the back of your head, you gasped and he took the opportunity to shove himself inside your mouth. He grunts in satisfaction, throwing his head back as he jerks his hips forward.
A single tear rolls down your face as you take all of him at once. You try not to panic and find a way to breathe through your nose as he fucks your mouth into oblivion. "Use your tongue, drag it up and down, wrap your lips tighter." He groans.
You do what he says, wrapping your lips around tighter, and you drag your tongue. "Let me see those pretty little eyes." He says in a sultry tone.
You lift your eyes up and stare at him as your mouth is still working. "Tonight, you're our little slut, got it?" He strokes your cheek, feeling his bulge.
Our?
You weren't sure what he meant and the euphoria is blocking your mind at the moment, so you simply give him a nod in response.
It takes four more thrusts and he explodes inside your mouth. "Swallow every drop." He grunts out, pumping any excess cum on the tip of your tongue.
You drink without spilling a drop.
"That's a good little witch." He smirks. You gather yourself and stand up. Panting, he zips up his pants. "You're not done just yet. Go ahead and continue your path." He handed you the flashlight.
"Will I see you again?" You ask naively. His lips tugged a grin. "If you finish the maze you will."
"So be a good witch, okay?" He caressed your cheek. "Okay." You say. You give him a final glance over your shoulder and you continue your path.
You lit up your way to the next corner and sure enough, there's another figure standing in the corner, patiently waiting.
Another large frame wearing a skeleton mask. "Hiya, sweet cheeks." You knew that voice but it couldn't be. Could it?
"Trick or treat?" He mocks.
If it was him, you weren't sure if you wanted a treat from him.
From Ransom.
So you picked option two.
"Trick." You swallowed softly.
"You sure?" He teases.
No
"Yes."
In the blink of an eye, he marched right over to you and pushed you so rough that it knocked you right on your ass.
That confirmed, that indeed the skeleton-masked man is Ransom. You grunt as you thump on the ground, you look up scowling as he laughs.
"What was that for?" He crouched over and instantly, he pulled up your dress. "For your trick."  He pulled down your panties.
You suck in a breath but you don't move nor tell him to stop. He lifts his mask just enough to expose his mouth.
He dives right in and starts to lick your wet cunt that's been throbbing since Scarecrow. You let out a soft moan and he goes deeper.
"R-ransom." You moan his name.
He slapped your cunt hard, making you flinch both in pleasure and pain. "Skeleton." He murmurs against your skin, sending vibrations.
"Alright then, Skeleton."
You smile hazily, The cloud you're on goes up higher and higher. "Ske- I-i'm going to-
The cloud disappears and you fall right down.
"Hey." You whine in protest, frowning as he adjusts his mask back on.
Trick.
"Don't pout, sweet cheeks. You'll get your treat in the end."
Pulling your panties back up, you stand, taking the flashlight from him with a frown on your face.
"Lose that pout." He now said in a stern voice.
"Make me." You frown deeper.
He was about to pounce on you but he refrained himself from doing so. "You're going to regret that at the end of the maze." He huffs.
You flash the flashlight right at his face. "You don't scare me, Ransom." You said before you walked away, frowning.
You walked cautiously as you heard a twig snap. You approach the next corner, finding a third figure smashing the shit out of a pumpkin.
Your gasp made him stop and turn to look at you.
Pumpkin masked-man.
You can feel a darker aura with this one, he was more scarier than the previous two. "Hi there." He curtsy.
"Hi." You whisper.
"Trick or treat Pumpkin?"
"Um..."
"T-treat."
"On your knees then."
After he gave you your treat, which was the same treat that Scarecrow gave you. He gave you a wink, muttering "See you at the finish line, Pumpkin."
"It's about time." An irritated voice startled you as you got to the next corner.
"I- uh- you stammered.
His mask gave you chills, a red devil mask.
"Looks like Pumpkin Man got greedy and gave you his treat twice." He crossed his arms.
He did and you didn't mind at all. You devoured his greed.
"Turn around and bend over, because of his greed, you're getting a trick."
You drop your mouth open. "What why?" You protested.
"That's fifteen." He spun you around and bent you over. "Thirty for not doing what I ordered."
Before you could even think, a hard smack bounced right on your ass cheek. You yelp, jerking forward.
"That's one."
Twenty-nine hard slaps later,
You rub your butt as you walk to the last corner, even though it was a trick, it sure did feel like a treat the way he kissed you afterward, the kiss was so soft like he was making up for it and you immediately forgave him.
Who knew the devil could kiss you like an Angel?
You look up to someone clapping their hands. "Congratulations, you made it."
The last masked man, the phantom of the opera.
"Is it over? Did I win?"
"You sure did Sweetheart." He steps closer. "And the winner gets a special prize. You ready?" He strokes your cheek. You look into his eyes feeling flutters in your stomach as he stares back into yours.
"Yes." You whisper.
As soon as the word leaves your mouth, four figures pop out of the shadows.
Scarecrow
Skeleton
Pumpkin
Red Devil
They all stand around you in a circle. "Boys, it's time to treat our girl, right," Phantom informs them.
They all nod. The first one to approach you is phantom. He picks you up and lays you on top of a flat stone and for a moment you think you were about to be sacrificed. But he starts to strip his clothes off instead.
You stare at him with googly eyes, staring up and down at his god-figure-like body. You didn't even notice you were biting your lip hard till a tiny spill of blood slid down.
Those biceps and his hard abs were a treat alone. You were aching to be smothered by him in a hug.
"Your dress... off now." He commanded.
You practically ripped it off your body. There were several growls growling at you, you looked at them confused about why but when Scarecrow pointed down to your chest you looked.
No bra.
You gulp loudly when Phantom towered over you, pinning your arms above your head as he snarled at you. "Why aren't you wearing a fucking bra."
"B-because- I-i t-the d-dress- it- um
You didn't make sense speaking gibberish.
He gripped your chin and you're forced to look into his dark eyes. "Don't let it happen again."
"Okay." You nodded slowly.
He leaned and kissed you softly as his hands wandered down and he began to massage your breasts. A soft moan escaped your lips and vibrated against his mouth. If it wasn't for the shift movement, you wouldn't have been reminded that there were four other guys around you, watching the two of you tensely.
"You're going to give yourself to me. I'm going to take your virginity and we're all going to have our way with you. You have been chosen." He murmurs as he trails his kisses down to your lower abdomen.
"Chosen?" You murmured back.
"Yes, you have been chosen. Tonight you will be honored, among other things." He smirked.
"How did you know I'm a virgin?"
You hear Ransom chuckling in a low tone.
Of course
He starts to stroke himself and you start to panic as he's rather big. "That is going inside me?" You gulped, eyes widened.
He smirks. "Every inch."
"Is it going to hurt?" You whisper as he lines himself to your entrance. "Yes." He doesn't lie.
He saw the panic in your eyes. "Red Devil come here." He ordered.
He steps inside the circle. "Kiss her, have her distracted till I'm all the way in."
Red Devil lifts his mask to his nose, dips his head, and crashes his lips against yours. You moan softly as he deepens the kiss, he holds your hand in place.
Phantom begins to enter his tip and automatically whimpers against the Red Devil. "She's squirming too much, keep her in place." Phantom let out a groan.
Scarecrow and Pumpkin approach, each one on each side holding your body down. Skeleton grips your hands down as Red Devil keeps kissing you.
Phantom's groans become louder as he goes further in and you begin to shed tears. "Just do it, already. The anticipation is killing her." Scarecrow huffed.
"Fuck you, you would take your time with her too. She's fucking tight." He grunts.
"Focus on me, baby." Red devil whispers. "M-kay-
"Aaah!" You let out a scream for two reasons. Phantom slammed himself all the way in breaking your hymen and two, Red Devil bit down on your lip.
He jerks his head forward and stays still. "Everyone back the fuck up, now." He still has his head hung down. Scarecrow and Pumpkin release their hold on you and Red Devil backs away. Skeleton also known as Ransom reluctantly also backed away. "I get dibs next, I was the one who coronated her." Said Ransom.
"Whatever." Phantom lifts his head up and flips him off. He starts to thrust, groaning as he empowers each thrust. You feel your heat welcoming him, loving how good he feels rubbing against your walls.
You moan uncontrollably, as your eyes roll to the back of your head. "Fuck." He curses, grabbing your legs, and throwing them over his shoulders as he picks up the pace.
"How does she feel?" One of them grunted out but you couldn't tell who it was, as you were too busy seeing white lines.
"Fucking perfect." He pants.
"Fuck I'm not going to last! She's fucking clamping down on me." He squints his eyes closed as you scream in ecstasy. He paints your insides white as he cums in you.
"My turn." Ransom grunts out. "Would you at least wait till my dick is out of her, you fucking horn dog." He retorts.
"Remember Skeleton, we wear a condom with her. The only one who gets to feel her bare is Phantom." Scarecrow tells him as if he was a child.
"I don't know why, I was the one who told you guys about her. Why does Phantom get to be the only one to fuck her raw."
Phantoms slid out of you making you flinch slightly. "Because I'm the leader, fucker." He spats.
"What do you two think?" Ransom ignores Phantom and speaks to Pumpkin and Red Devil instead. "If her cunt feels just as good as her pretty little mouth then yea I wouldn't mind feeling her bare." Pumpkin muses.
Red Devil scoffs. "Well, then we have our answer because you were a greedy fucker and kept her longer than your original time."
As you can tell he was still upset about the double treat...
"Would you guys shut the fuck up, Skeleton fuck her already if not I'm taking your turn." Scarecrow groans.
"I think the fuck not." He snarls. Ransom picks you up like a rag doll and has you in a doggy-style position. Ransom slaps your ass hard and groans. "Remember when I said you were going to regret it, I'm going to hate fuck you so good that you'll fall in love with me." He whispered in your ear.
You hear the crinkle of the condom wrapper ripping. He puts it on. "Ransom don't, not in my-
Before you could finish he smacks your ass again making you jump forward. "Skeleton, fuck her pussy, we'll save that hole for another day." Phantom orders.
He scoffs. "I can have my way with her, I don't need to listen to you."
"I marked her first, my cum is filled inside her. You will do what the fuck I say. You could choke her, do other shit but you won't fuck her ass tonight, she's not ready." He grits out.
Ransom growls behind you. "Fine." He spits out.
In the same position, he enters inside, immediately reminding you of the pain that comes in the beginning. He yanks your hair back and forces you to stare at Phantom who swallows hard watching Ransom fucking you hard.
It shouldn't turn you on but it does. You can see Phantom getting hard again and that does something to your core.
"Look what you're doing to him Y/N, what you're doing to all of them." He taunts in your ear. You glance at Pumpkin, the red devil and scarecrow who's burning holes at you and Ransom.
Pumpkin and Scarecrow are palming themselves against their jeans as Red Devil's gaze is right on you. You can feel his eyes making love to you. You moan watching all of them stare at you.
"I knew you were a slut, not once did I buy your innocent act." He chuckled darkly.
Ransom fucks you harder and you feel him twitching inside you. He wraps his hand around your throat and squeezes hard, you gasp, throwing your head back, your eyes rolling to the back of your head again. "Well look at that, you're no longer pouting, sweet cheeks."
"R-ransom i-i'm cu-
"Give it to me, slut." The degradation was enough to trigger your orgasm and you cum as he spills inside the condom.
You find yourself screaming as he bites hard on your shoulder. "I guess we both marked her." He taunts Phantom who snarls.
"I'm marking her next, come here baby." Pumpkin was already secured with a condom when he snatched you from Ransom.
He leans you against the stone, wrapping your legs around his waist and he doesn't waste any time, he starts to fuck you. "Fuck you do feel good, so fucking tight." He groans.
You no longer feel any mascara on your lashes, it's smudged all over your face thanks to them three. But it's not over yet, you still have Red Devil and Scarecrow.
He tugs and plays with your breasts as they bounce up and down as you rock your hips forward meeting his pace. "Mhmm, you are a little slut, you like getting fuck by five guys?" He pinches your nipple.
"Y-yes!" You cry out, feeling another orgasm rising.
"You are going to be so much fun, go ahead baby, cream me." He coos.
You scream once again, digging your nails on his back and you cum for the third time. He grunts in victory, spilling inside the condom.
He pulls out and Red Devil steps into the frame. "He's a greedy little fucker, isn't he?" He tells you.
You wrap your arms around him, snuggling close as you're starting to feel sleepy and sore. "You can be greedy too... I don't mind." You whisper groggily.
He prepares himself. "I think I'll take up on your offer sweetheart." He caressed your cheek. He kisses you tenderly. "Hang on." He soothes.
You whimper again feeling him stretching you out, they all have been but it feels so good. You hang on to him as he goes into stealth mode, you can tell he has a dark side but he can also be soft, at least with you anyway.
You bury your head into the crook of his neck, not being able to do anything about it you just take the pounding he's giving you till you both cum.
"Greed's hell of a drug." He whispers, kissing you once more. "I'll kick Greed's ass if he doesn't move." Scarecrow deadpans behind him.
He kisses your forehead. "She's all yours." He stepped to the side.
Scarecrow closes the distance between the two of you. "I told you, you'll be seeing me again." He parts your lips with his thumb. "I-i don't know if I can handle another orgasm." You swallow.
"I believe in you."
You slowly nod. "If you pass out I'll stop." He assures. "Okay." You nod again.
You don't feel achy anymore when he enters you, you're getting used to the stretch. You inhale a deep breath as you wrap your arms around his large body, all certified lean muscle.
He hitch a breath, feeling how wet and slick you are down there. "God damm." He pants.
"I have to say, I'm glad we finally listened to Skeleton." He mumbles. "Fuck you asshole." Ransom glares at him.
"Scarecrow, she's getting close, make our girl feel good." Phanton palms his hard erection.
"With pleasure." He teases.
He plunges in and out of you, making you cry and whimper. "Oh my god." Your lips quiver.
"No gods here, Witchy. Just devils." He says in a sultry tone. You bite your lip, hot and not bothered by his comment.
You want him, you want all of them.
You need all of them.
The five hellraisers.
Our bodies condense, the sounds our bodies make echoing throughout the corn maze. "I- S-scarecrow, don't stop, even if I pass out." You say in the heat of the moment.
He groans, picking up his pace. "You can handle it, keep your eyes on me." He coaches you.
Your mouth opens wide, your eyes bulging out of their sockets. "I-
"Eyes on me, Y/n. Keep your eyes on me. Stay with me baby girl, we're almost there."
"I-I can't-
You cry, shaking your head.
"Yes, you can, look at me, focus on me." You look into his eyes through his mask. You breathe heavily as you focus on his eyes and somehow you manage to orgasm without passing out. He catches you as your body convulses uncontrollably.
He rubs your back as he holds you. "I told you, you could do it." He says in a playful tone.
"N-no more." You say tirelessly.
"Course has been completed. Congratulations Y/N, your initiation is finished." Phantom speaks.
"Initiation?" You say hazily.
"You just became the five hellraiser's girl. You belong to us now."
"Who's us exactly?" You say.
He takes off his mask revealing his face, Pumpkin follows then Red Devil, Skeleton who was a dead giveaway, and lastly Scarecrow.
You look at each one of them, now recognizing them from school.
Ransom's friends or should you say, brotherhood of some sort.
Ari Levinson- Phantom
Steve Rogers- Red Devil
Lloyd Hansen- Pumpkin
Andy Barber- Scarecrow
Ransom Drysdale- Skeleton
Ari approaches you first, caressing your cheek. He opens the palm of his hand revealing something. "We each will give you a ring, if you accept them you will always wear them. You are not to take them off, this is how everyone in school will know you belong to the hell raisers. So what do you say Y/N?"
"Put it on me." You don't hesitate. He chuckles as he slides the ring down your ring finger. It's a white colored ring just like his mask.
He kisses you before taking a step to the side. Steve comes up next and you stick his hand out to him. He slides a red-colored ring on your middle finger, kissing your hand when he's done. Lloyd shoots you a wink as he puts his orange-colored ring on your index finger. Andy brings your thumb to his mouth kissing it softly as he slides his off yellow-colored ring on your thumb.
Last, Ransom comes up to you with a smirk. "May I sweet cheeks?"
You stare at him for a moment. "I suppose." You say cautiously. He slides his black and white colored ring on your pinky.
"Welcome to the club sweet cheeks." He smiles. You hook your pink with him and you two pinky promise each other.
"So what happens next?" You ask.
He chuckles, looking over to Ari, who smirks.
"Reign."
You had no idea what he meant but as long it also means you get food and cuddles, you're down for it.
Let's reign hell, hellraisers.
THE END.

SDCC 2018: Dynamite Offer Up 5 One-Shot Comic Book Treats For This Halloween
SDCC 2018: Dynamite Offer Up 5 One-Shot Comic Book Treats For This Halloween
It may well be high summer where you are (it’s certainly been a scorcher here in the UK over the past few weeks) but I am already dreaming of lighter breezes and some rainfall. But, in hoping for that, I am also hoping for an end to summer and after that comes the season of ‘mellow fruitfulness‘ to quote Keats, and soon after that, Halloween. Well, Dynamite are first off the blocks in offering…

Trick-or-Treat 👻🍭
Pairing: Single!Dad!Bucky Barnes x Younger!Male!Reader
Summary: Halloween was a special time of year for you. Because you could be with the one you love most. And also prank people without much complaint. Something you made sure to include your love in.
AN: This will be from Bucky's point of view. I decided to try it out for fun.
Tumblr media
A loud knock at the door jerks Bucky from his doze. He squints over at the clock next to the fridge. It read seven thirty-two.
That's odd. Steve wasn't due back with Rebecca until nine-ish. So, who was knocking at the door? Some trick-or-treaters? It couldn't be. He made sure not to leave his porch light on so they'd avoid his house.
Another rough knock at his door forces Bucky to his feet.
He recalls that a few kids last year stopped by his house even with the porch light off and kept knocking because they knew he was home. At the time Y/n, a boy he saved a few years earlier who ended up making him fall in love with him, had scared them off. But Y/n was busy at some friend's party.
Damn kids.
He scowls before jerking the door open ready to knock some sense into the kids. But there were no kids, only a man dressed in dirty blue overalls and a scuffed Michael Myers mask.
Bucky huffs a laugh.
"Uh, hey there Mister Myers. Sorry I'm all out of candy." The man says nothing simply staring at Bucky from his place on the porch.
At this angle he couldn't see what color the man's eyes were, only darkness peers back from the mask's eye holes.
Unease pricks along Bucky's spine at the silence. His time in the army taught him that quiet was never good. Fingers twitching against the door handle, he rocks back on his heels.
"Thanks for the good scare, but I think it's time for you to go now. I've got stuff to do." And by 'stuff to do' Bucky meant get some extra sleep while he can.
He moves to close the door and the man backs off, turning to leave.
For a moment Bucky finds him staring after the Michael Myers cosplayer. It had been a while since he saw such good design put into the outfit. They really went all out.
Shrugging off the unease he made his way slowly back to the couch. But something made him hesitate. He once again blames his time in the army making him jumpy. Yet it saved his and Steve's life more than he could count.
Movement up the stairs leading to his and Rebecca's rooms grabs his full attention. A shadow emerges from his room and he stiffens.
It was the Michael Myers guy from earlier.
"What the hell?" Before he can move for his handgun stashed away in one of the cabinets in the kitchen the Michael Myers starts dancing. Hips wiggling back and forth as he pretty much hops down the stairs.
Bucky had seen that terrible dance once before and immediately slaps his forehead with a groan.
"Y/n! I could have shot you, asshole." The man in question jumps off the last step and tugs off the mask, eyes twinkling with mirth. Bucky's rapidly beating heart slows at the sight of the h/c's mused hair from the mask.
"Come on, you have to admit that was pretty good."
It was because it was unexpected and Bucky hated to admit it out loud.
"Whatever," He allows himself to finally plop back on the couch while flipping Y/n the bird. "Now that you're here, let's watch the real Michael Myers at work."
Y/n saunters over, kissing the top of Bucky's head setting fireworks off in his chest before dropping down beside him.
"Oh, yeah. One more thing before the movie, Buck." Bucky raises a quizzical brow as Y/n turns to face him, looking oddly serious.
"Trick-or-treat. Smell my feet-" Bucky proceeds to smother Y/n with a pillow as he howls with laughter.
It was hard not to love the idiot. Even when he got on Bucky's nerves. In the end, he was glad he saved this ridiculously handsome yet annoying guy those few years ago. Because it meant his holidays ended up being a little brighter and filled with joy.
Bucky Barnes Masterlist
AN: Hope you enjoyed although it was short. I had fun writing this! Happy Halloween! 🦇🎃🦇

Best Domlene fanfictions (Dominique Di Pierro/Darlene Alderson - Mr. Robot)
So, I have decided to gather all my favourite fanfictions from my favourite ships, and to start from Domlene because I am butthurt about Sam Esmail playing with our gay feelings. Updates will not be very consistent but you can be sure I will look into every corner of the Internet (shouldn’t take that long, since the serie is not that popular and Domlene is not that heavily shipped), I will read every single fanfiction that I deem worhty and add it in here if it’s really good. Let’s start then, shall we?
[Last update: 3 March 2022]
MULTI CHAPTERED/SERIES:
tuesdays with darlene by lunchables [T] [17,747 words] [incomplete]. Darlene is a bartender and Dom is a Law student. I read this like 10 times because it’s just that good.
System Update [part 13 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [T] [38,419 words]. Dom and Darlene decide to take the big step.
Backup [part 12 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [M] [13,463 words]. Darlene is excited to celebrate a special day and wants Dom to be as excited about it as she is.
Heavenly [part 11 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [T] [6,235 words]. Dom is in a delirious state after taking painkillers and starts rambling about how perfect her girlfriend is. Too wholesome.
Pieces [part 10 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [T] [6,610 words]. Dom finally gets to meet Mr Robot.
Small Talk [part 9 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [E] [13,911 words]. Darlene doesn’t know how to stop talking when she’s drunk. Dom looks for a way to shut her up.
Imposter [part 8 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [M] [13,890 words]. First Christmas together.
In The Clear [part 7 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [M] [15,210 words]. Dom is a workaholic and gets sucked into work and Darlene is far from pleased about that.
Making A Mess Of It [part 6 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [T] [40,876 words]. Darlene gets to meet the DiPierro fam over Thanksgiving and is anxious about confronting Dom about Susan Jacobs.
Debugging [part 5 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [T] [4,903 words]. Darlene is sick and more insufferable than usual, but Dom takes care of her like a good gf. Dom is so whipped. My heart was melting into a puddle while reading it.
Eating At The Movies 101  [part 3 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [T] [1,979 words]. The Alderson siblings introduce Dom to their Halloween tradition. More like Dom and Darlene being adorable af and Elliot third-wheeling them.
Just Say It  [part 2 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [T] [17,101 words].  Two tsunderes coming to terms with their feelings for each other. This is a gem, just like the whole Recovery Mode series, and pretty much everything written by this author.
Back to Sanity [part 1 of Recovery Mode] by nouseforaname [T] [26,858 words]. This is soo good. Elliot and Darlene are trying to heal after all that shit went down with the Dark Army, Dom comes back from Budapest and soon meets again a certain short-tempered hacker.
ONE-SHOTS:
oral fixation by MerakiWitch [E] [2,272 words]. Inspired by Dom’s canon lollypop habit. Title is pretty self-explanatory.
come into the water by MerakiWitch [G] [1,276 words]. Dom is a sailor, Darlene is a siren.
10:47 AM by deeeepsteep_ (roguefreyja) [M] [1,557 words]. Darlene wakes up and is horny.
Between the Drinks and Subtle Things (The Holes in My Apologies) by HobbitSpaceCase [E] [1,556 words]. Because we all love some (semi-drunk) hate sex.

Quick Thoughts: Scott Adams Does It Again, More Removals, ReBoot and Halloween Schedule
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy ghouls and goblins. It's almost spooky season so that means it's time for the most haunting thing of all.. an old man yelling at the world in a comic strip. Also my halloween schedule
Halloween Schedule:
I've decided to shift in how I reveal my review schedule. I used to keep it on the blog but the combination of how long it takes to edit when this has to change frequently (as I don't book most comission slots in advance), and the fact Tumblr has made it so hard to access that even Kev, my most loyal reader, barely uses it, i'm just going to put them out here every month. As always schedule slippage and what not may apply.
October: 10/2: Garfield's Halloween Monthly Muppets: Muppets Haunted Mansion The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals 10/9: Watchmen: Two Riders Approaching Army of Darkness: Ashes 2 Ashes The Owl House: Thanks to Them 10/16: More Than Meets The Eye #2 Paranorman Mission HIll: One Bang for Two Brothers 10/23: Evil Dead 2: Beyond Dead by Dawn Emma Patreon Scooby Doo Poll Winner!
As you can see this year's halloween is less focused but as a result is giving you more spooky goodness for your buck with an all time classic halloween special, the start of a look at the spooktacular hatchetfield series (moved up to concide with Starkid's ongoing campign to hopefully drum up some numbers for stretch goals), more Evil Dead as we take a look at two of Ash's comics, the LONG delayed fan voted on look at paranorman and another poll this time for SCOOBY DOOBY DOO! I watched every movie with my good friend @jess-the-vampire and now you fine folks get to pick from the ones my patreons and jess pick out for you. Poll will be forthcoming.
In non horror news, we have the begining of the end for Owl House, my annual look at mission hill for the keviversary, and more transformers and watchmen. Pretty spooky huh folks?
Scott Adams VS the Environment
So yeah for those who didn't know, and i'm sad to inform you, Scott Adams who created the comic strip Dilbert and highly influenced a medium I love, comic strips.. ended up becoming, or maybe always was and just got more obvious with it in the trump era right wing maga loving douchecanoe. I already disowned him and got rid of all my dilbert when previously the man tried to use a school shooting to promote his side hustle. It's very sad to me a strip I genuinely used to love is now dead to me because it's creator is such a dick.
That being said I can still get some laughs from his behaviors as this morning I read an article. Apparently in recent dilbert strips Scotty talked about ESG's, essentially a way to get corporations to stop being captain planet villians and start being captain planet. Understadanbly being rightwing talking points given shape, form and a popular comic strip, Scott Adams thinks this is stupid and ranted about it in his comic strip
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah not only is that as far as I can tell not how they work, and an unfunny shot at necessary diversity, but the second strip is just baffling. Apparently Scott introduced a black man who identifies as white, which is not only very much not a thing, but also clearly designed with the same good faith arguging as my dad saying he could marry his cat if gay marriage passed. It's dumb
But the article, which I highly recommend, shows it SOMEHOW gets dumber. Yest shooting himself in the foot on gay sterotyping, gender queer sterotyping, trans sterotyping and just plain being a decent human wasn't enough. No he also encourages employees to send their employers these strips. The article even mentions wanting to see that because it'd be geninely funnier than either of these
Tumblr media
I have my own two cents: Since when has ANY boss ever listened to a dilbert strip. Scott himself pre going off a cliff while yelling MAGA!, menteioned in a collection how bosses would ask employees to take strips down. Big Corpos aren't going to listen to the right thing for GOOD reasons. WHy would they listen to their employees? "Oh wow the guy who draws dilbert is mad at us better get rid of these tax breaks for doing the bare minimum of basic human decency so we don't offend the mighty Scott Adams"
Scott Adams fall is just.. pathetic at this stage. It's shame he's sunk this low but boy is it fun to watch
HBO Max and Netflix remove shows
Whelp SOMEHOW HBO Max isn't done, as it's removing both Tigtone and Lazer Wulf. Both shows I hadn't seen and really wasn't intrested in, but both shows that don't deserve this. It appears nothing is safe. The only possibly GOOD news is that CN shows are popping up on hulu as of late, meaning we MIGHT see some of the abandoned shows pop up elsewhere and they MIGHT be pivoting from Tax Writeoff to just selling their ip's for parts, which isn't GREAT, but it's still better as it least it means Close Enough might land eleswhere along with everything else they threw away.
Netflix is also getting in on it, removing one their first originals and a show I forgot existed and will probably again, Hemlock Grove. Hopefully this isn't the same nonsense and this trend dosen't continue. I mean I wouldn't be sad if I couldn't watch Rake the forgotten Will Arnett comedy you didn't know existed about a guy who gives adivce to people, but it's still weird to just throw out content you've already invested in at best and terrible at worst. It's not AS bad as HBO Max because unlike HBO Max netflix might NEED the tax writeoff as it tries to rebalance books and makes incresingly sketchy decisions, but it's still not great and I HOPE other streamers don't pick up on this.
Reboot early thoughts
Finally because this coudln't get any weirder, my thoughts on the recent Hulu sitcom Reboot which aired it's first three episodes this week. Which is a WEIRD model, as you'd think two would be enough.
Reboot is a sitcom starring the wonderful Rachel Bloom of Crazy Ex Girlfriend, a show I haven't watched but do know for it's charming musical numbers. LIke this one!
youtube
... why HAVEN'T I watched this through.
Anyways reboot follows Hannah, an indie darling whose latest film has given her the clout to do whatever she wants, so she pitches to Hulu a reboot of the old sitcom step right up about a couple marrying and dealing with both their precious son and the boys father.
So naturally they get everyone else back on board: Reed Sterling, played to pretentious perfectoin by Kegan Micheal Key whose finally found his second wind after a few failed shows post his best friend and former comedy partner becoming one of the greatest horror directors ever, a theater trained actor who left the show in a huff and now returns assured that original series creator Gordon is coming nowhere near it and leaving his equally pretentious girlfriend in new york, Clay Barber, the formerly drugged out mess, now a burnt out barely functioning but entirely jolly and likeable wreck of a man played by Johnny Knoxville being amazingly deadpan, Bree Marie Jensen played by a beautifulyl unhinged judy greer clearly channeling Cheryl, a primia donna actress turned duchess and Reed's ex with the chemistry naturally still being there, and Zack, a goofy awkward former child star who spent the rest of his career in awful teen films for what i'm assuming is disney channel. Naturally he's played by former Disney Channel star Calumn Worthy, who was on the terrible disney sitcom austin and ally which I reviewed. In the review I mentioned this show and that Calumn would likely do better. And I was right he was capable.. and suprised tha the ended up stealing the whole goddman show from a buffet of far more seasoned comedy actors. Don't get me wrong, EVERYONE here is great from Reed's up his own ass smuggery, to Bree frequently mockign reed to Clay freaked out talking about his Zack's mom gave him an orange slice after sex and called him a good boy and telling Zack not to punch him in the nose as "my septum's hanging on by a thread'
It's Calum who steals the show as he talks about "How cool is it we're all adults who have had sex?" has to constantly remind people who is is and awkardly treis to bond with Clay after Clay sleeps with his mom twice. Worthy is game to not only make fun of his own history but be the charming awkward goofus this series needs. Zack tends to have the best lines.
Of course this being hollywood, Gordon naturally comes back and Hannah nearly quits, as does Sterling. He ends up relenting on it as they ALL need this: Sterling hasn't worked a paid gig in a year (and it was for a hemroid commerical), Bree needs the gig as her divorce was under "kettle law" thus meaning she barely got anything, Clay need sit becaues "bad stuff finds me" when he's not working, and Zack needs it because shockingly teen movies don't like actors who need hairplugs playing teens. Weird given Disney hired a 30 year old once to play a 16 year old. Maybe it was a policy change
So they beg Hannah to come back, allowing the cast to maintain some dignity while still getting the money. That's when we get the big twist of episode 1 and the one that realy makes the show: Gordon, played by the legendary Paul Reiser playing peek douchebag, is Hannah's dad from the marriage before the one he based Step Right Up on and is introducing a new child in the pilot as the long lost child of Reed's character/Gordon's Self Insert to retake the story.
So now we get botht he intresting story of a father trying to come to terms with the crap he did while still being a huge old school douche, his daughter trying not to throttle him, and the rest of the crew dealing with all their shit including an inexperinced reality star gordon hires fresh off fuck buddy mountain (which if it wans't a show before this certainly will be now) , Reed and Bree's sexual tension and as I mentioned Clay nailing Zack's mom who creepily attends al lher sons performances. The cast has great chemistry, the jokes are high and this is set to be one of the best comedis of the season. Go check it out. And thanks for reading.

Blu-ray Review: The Dead Zone
Tumblr media
If the top echelon of Stephen King adaptations can be defined by the eminent classics like The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining, and Carrie, 1983's The Dead Zone belongs in the rank right below. It's just as good as, if not better than, more ubiquitous titles like Christine, Cujo, Pet Sematary, and Children of the Corn. While The Dead Zone may lack the iconography of those films, director David Cronenberg (The Fly, Videodrome) adapts King's 1979 novel of the same name into an extremely effective thriller.
The first story set in King's fictional New England town of Castle Rock (also home to Cujo, The Dark Half, and Needful Things, among others) - although it's transported from Maine to the more political New Hampshire for the film, and shot in Canada - The Dead Zone's plot is episodic in nature. School teacher Johnny Smith's (Christopher Walken, The Deer Hunter) life is uprooted by a horrific car accident that puts him in a coma for five years. He awakens to find that his girlfriend (Brooke Adams, Invasion of the Body Snatchers) is married and has a child, his job is gone, and he has an uphill battle if he ever wants to walk again - but he has gained the remarkable ability to experience clairvoyant visions through physical contact.
Tumblr media
As news of the phenomenon spreads, local sheriff George Bannerman (Tom Skerritt, Alien) enlists Johnny to harness his unique ability to help catch a serial killer on the loose. But his gift is also a curse, as Johnny's body weakens as his powers become stronger. In the most memorable - and eerily prescient - portion of the film, Johnny meets Greg Stillson (Martin Sheen, Apocalypse Now), a power-hungry, sociopathic politician running for senate with presidential aspirations. He has amassed a groundswell of cult-like followers who fail to recognize his corruption. Culminating in an impossibly tense finale, it poses an age-old dilemma: if you could go back in time to pre-World War II Germany knowing what you know now, would you kill Hitler?
The Dead Zone marks a transitional film for Cronenberg. He shows great restraint in eschewing the body horror for which he was known in favor of a more compassionate, human story. Rather than generating the material himself, he was a director for hire; executive producer Dino De Laurentiis (Army of Darkness, King Kong) chose him to helm the script as adapted by Jeffrey Boam (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). While he embraces the genre elements, Cronenberg leans into the traditional suspense and melodrama as well as the political undertones. De Laurentiis' first of several King adaptations (alongside Cat's Eye, Silver Bullet, and Maximum Overdrive) is his strongest, with Debra Hill (Halloween, Escape from New York) serving as producer on this outing.
Tumblr media
Bill Murray was King's choice for Johnny, while Cronenberg wanted Nicholas Campbell (Naked Lunch). De Laurentiis justifiably demanded a more well-known actor, so Campbell was given a supporting role as Deputy Frank Dodd and Walken was cast as the lead. Walken brings a lot of character to every role, and Johnny Smith is among the most nuanced work from his career. He has good chemistry with Adams, who he has known since high school. Sheen delivers the strongest performance of the film, and it plays ever better in a post-Trump world, as his character's parallels to the former President add another dimension. The cast also includes Herbert Lom (The Pink Panther franchise) as Johnny's doctor and Anthony Zerbe (The Omega Man) as the wealthy father of a boy that Johnny tutors.
The Dead Zone has received a new 4K scan from the original camera negative with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and stereo options for Scream Factory's Collector's Edition Blu-ray. It features reversible artwork, with a new collage illustrated by Hugh Fleming on one side (and the slipcover) and the original theatrical poster on the other. While Cronenberg was unavailable for input, his absence is made up for with three new audio commentaries. Director of photography Mark Irwin (Scream, The Fly) reminisces about the production and his Cronenberg collaborations while detailing the technical aspects. Film historians Dr. Steve Haberman and Constantine Nasr provide an erudite exploration of the film and how it compares to its source material. Special features producer Michael Gingold does an even deeper dive into the minutia of the production. The final audio track features isolated selections from Michael Kamen's (Die Hard, X-Men) score following a thorough introduction by film music historian Daniel Schweiger.
Tumblr media
The disc also features new interviews with Adams, who has pleasant things to say about Walken but calls him "very odd and quite indecipherable," and production manager John M. Eckert and associate producer Jeffrey Chernov, both of whom provide unique insight and reflect fondly on the production. Four archival featurettes - Memories from The Dead Zone, The Look of The Dead Zone, Visions of The Dead Zone, and The Politics of The Dead Zone - offer insight wisdom Cronenberg, Adams, Irwin, editor Roland Sanders (The Fly, A History of Violence), and more circa 2006. Other special features include Trailers from Hell trailer commentary by filmmaker Mick Garris (The Stand, Sleepwalkers), the theatrical trailer, two TV spots, and a gallery of behind-the-scenes stills.
The Dead Zone is available now on Blu-ray via Scream Factory.

Halloween in Cradle!
Let’s imagine Halloween is a holiday that was introduced in Cradle by the first Alice and the people decide to let celebrations coincide with the harvest festivals like the “Land of Reason” does. How would "Alice” spend it with the boys?
(first time doing an IkeRev thing! some characters’ stuff will be shorter since I don’t know much about them yet! Put in a Read More since it’s LONG lol)
Lancelot:
It’s become a tradition that the rich and elite of Cradle attend an evening Halloween masquerade ball. The ball is only lit by candlelight and everyone dresses in black for an added spooky elegance. Red wine is served and haunting, but elegant music is played for dancing
Lancelot, of course, attends and invites you to be his partner. It’s the first and only time you’ll see him in black (you know, being that he’s the King of the Red Army) and he looks absolutely regal in his black suit, cloak and full mask with gold trim.
As the two of you dance and enjoy the evening, he explains the traditions of this party. It seems that the Central Quarter’s ballroom is, in fact, haunted by the ghost of a woman in white. She died a tragic death on Halloween night; people found her amidst the dancing, sprawled at the foot of the grand staircase, swathed in her pure white dress. As such, everyone who attends dresses in black to be sure that they can spot her before someone is “spirited away.” Red wine is served because it was her favorite drink and her favorite music is played to let her know she is welcome.
As he tells you this and the two of you continue to spin around, you think you catch a glimpse of white out of the corner of your eye. Lancelot squeezes your hand at the look of apprehension in your eyes and smiles at you, pulling you closer.
“Don’t worry,” he whispers. “I’ll make sure no ghost spirits you away tonight.”
Ray:
Halloween for Ray is busy just like any other day, but he’s always willing to help decorate the barracks to make them spooky!
Both armies like to have fun with the public and open parts of the barracks up for visitors for a fun spooky evening with games and fun haunts.
Insists on plenty of black cats everywhere.
Black cats are not bad luck. They’re good luck and ensure that Halloween will be fun and safe! (that’s the legend he’s determined to spread). Is not ashamed to wear black cat ears for the night either lol
He’s the head of security for the autumn and Halloween festivals that happen in the neutral Central quarter’s town square and the two of you walk around together having fun as he oversees the safety of everyone.
After the fun is over and the night is winding down, he’s happy to cuddle with you by the fire with a cup of warm apple cider - most likely with a black cat or two snuggled on your laps.
Jonah:
Not much of a Halloween person, tbh thinks it’s too childish
thinks the sweets are too much of Edgar’s type, not his own
the morning of, however, he invites you to a nearby café for brunch to show what delicious autumn delicacies they have
is happy to tell you about the different things he and Luka would get up to on Halloween when they were kids.
the two of you laugh over the stories he tells when he “defended” little Luka from a person dressed up in a ghost costume when they went guising as kids. Won’t admit that he ever got scared, (though he did)
Sirius:
This time of year is one of his favorites, because it means lots of autumnal baked goods that he can make!
Pumpkin pies, pumpkin cake rolls, pumpkin doughnuts, apple pies, apple crisp, pumpkin apple crisp! You name it, he’ll bake it.
It’s his baked goods that are always around for any harvest or Halloween festival
While he’s cool with Halloween, he does prefer the harvest aspect of he month more, mainly because he likes autumn decorations
Will invite you to help carve pumpkins with him. Or rake leaves. He’s actually quite good at carving and makes some fantastic faces and designs! And expect some fun leaf shenanigans with Chutney involved too
the two of you like take a walk together on the nearby trails to admire the beautiful autumn colors before the harvest dinner.
Edgar:
To your surprise, he quite likes Halloween
Mainly because he gets to scare and prank people and no one can judge him for it this time. Also CANDY
You can bet this guy has TONS of candy everywhere
Is ready to go out guising like all the kids do for the candy, even though Jonah keeps berating him for being too old
“You don’t even have a costume!!!” “I do so have a costume. I’m going as a Red Army soldier.”
Can also carve pumpkins quite well. makes some scary faces on them
Since he’s forbidden to go guising, takes the next best thing, which is to take you around the Halloween festival in search of treats to buy and win
Is a pro at all the games. Takes GREAT pleasure in the dunking booth, and is a great shot at it
“Here, Alice. I won this special candy just for you. Don’t eat it just yet. Let’s wait till we’re alone. Then we can share them, together~”
Luka:
Like his brother, is just meh about Halloween
But he enjoys the harvest festivals
Invites Alice to join him in going to one that’s on a farm just outside of the city. Together the two of you have a blast! Going on hayrides, looking at the different pumpkins in the pumpkin patch - and picking some out for later Halloween decorations -  as well as picking out the juiciest apples for later baking and sampling some delicious apple cider
You pick out matching scarves with him at the farm’s shop that sells hand-knitted clothing perfect for fall days like this one and wear them for the rest of the day
You can be sure that harvest time means some delicious food made by Luka, as he gets along with the farmers who offer him their best produce
The nights are colder, so he makes sure he warms up a cup of tea for you before you both snuggle down together for bed.
“Going to the farm with you was so much fun. Let’s make it a tradition to go together every year!”
Kyle:
This time of year, our boy is on the lookout for colds. He’s prepared for visitors coming far and wide seeking treatments for them and has his office well stocked with medicine and herbs to help treat coughs and sore throats
He can get into the Halloween spirit too and decorates his office with a sort of “mad doctor” vibe to it. hOw OrIginAL
You can be sure he offers every kid that comes to him a Halloween treat when they leave his office (he’s a doctor, not a dentist lol)
basically Halloween is a chill day for him with just a flavor of spookiness.
likes to chill at Dalim’s bar in the evening for a quieter Halloween night
Fenrir:
This boy does NOT do Halloween!!
He’ll do anything to avoid celebrating it. Too busy with work! Gotta train! Has guard duty at the barracks! He has DESK WORK to take care of!
The other officers admittedly like to prank him this time of year because of it and it never fails to work
He’s touched when your make him his favorite meal to comfort him after a prank got him good
he tells you that his dislike of the holiday and his fear of ghosts both started when he was kid. his family threw a big Halloween party one night and late in the evening, when everyone was sitting together telling ghost stories, there was a banging in one of the rooms upstairs and the fire went out suddenly, leaving them all in the dark. People said it was a ghost coming to visit them. for a boy of only six, he said that night stuck with him for years and he still remembers how scared he was.
you’re touched by this rare moment of vulnerability from him and promise that from now on, each year, you’ll have your own “un-Halloween” celebration together
Zero:
He likes the idea of guising but knows he’s too old for it
Instead, he enjoys participating in the Central Quarter’s Halloween festival
He helps the local candy maker in his booth and the two of them make candy for people to buy during the festival
is not above dressing to get in the spirit of the night
Makes you your own special candy when you visit him in the booth
you share a candy apple together when he gets time off and can walk around the festival with you
Seth:
Ultimate Halloween prankster of the Black Army.
Has been the chief scarer of Fenrir but never goes too overboard -just enough
Halloween is in part about dressing up in costume, so you can be sure he’ll want to dress Alice up in every princess, witch or vampiress costume he can get his hands on
matching costumes is a win-win situation for him. his favorite is vampire and vampire bride. will get into character for it too
“careful Alice, I just might bite that pretty neck of yours if you keep acting so adorably~”
Loki:
Will 100% want to go guising with you
dresses up in a black hoodie with cat ears. “Look! I’m a black cat!”
the two of you hop around the villages together, you in a white sheet as a ghost, and him as a black cat, carrying sacks to get candy
back at the house, the two of you will sort out your booty together and trade treats, offering some to Harr if he wants any.
the night will end with bobbing for apples, some spooky games and tales and Harr admonishing you both not to eat too much candy before bed
you both may or may not decide to play a fun, innocent prank on Harr later on in the night
Harr:
For Halloween, you and Harr decide to take it easy. Maybe eat a big dinner with some celebratory cake and play some games together at the house
but then Loki comes up with a daring idea: late night exploring in the Old Ruins that lie deep in the Forbidden Forest
the idea is kinda scary, but also thrilling! Plus, Loki reasons, they’ll be with Harr, so there won’t be any danger
Harr (secretly pleased that he’s trusted so much) finally agrees.
The Old Ruins are rumored to be haunted, Loki says, as the three of you creep in. The door makes a painfully loud creaking noise as he tugs it open
Armed with a lamp fueled by magic crystals, Harr leads the way in as the other two huddle around him. the building is dark, decrepit, and quite dangerous in some places as the walls and upper floors are caving in.
“We shouldn’t stay here too long,” Harr warns, worried about the instability of the place. A sound is heard in a nearby room adjacent to the foyer.
“Let’s check it out!” Loki suggests and he heads in the direction of the noise.
You don’t find anything but continue to hear noises, noises that seem to be coming from the upper floors...
After a while of exploring, Harr suddenly decides to put his foot down. “Let’s go. Now.” He tells you.
You both don’t argue against the tone in his voice and head back to the house, Loki excitedly talking about their adventure. As he does, Harr takes your hand and holds it tightly.
“I’m sorry we had to leave so suddenly, but while you both were looking around, I saw someone watching us from above on the third floor. The last thing I ever want is putting you in harm’s way. Stay with me tonight so I know you’re safe.”
Blanc:
He can remember when the first Alice introduced Halloween to Cradle. In fact, he helped in forming the traditions of the holiday to what they are today.
He organizes and is in charge of the Halloween festival alongside with Dean. He also likes to host a costume party in the Garden, free for anyone who wants to attend
He dresses up as a white rabbit knight hOW OrIginAL
Cliched costume aside, he looks cute so it’s all good
You are his special guest and he ensures that your first dance of the night is with him
Oliver:
His favorite part about this holiday is the costumes
He makes lots of costumes and items for kids who want a super cool look for Halloween
in his kid form, he reluctantly agrees to an early afternoon of guising with you, but insists on wearing a mask he made for himself so no one knows it’s him
don’t be surprised if he pulls some pranks on you throughout the day to get back at you for making him do that in his kid form
never goes to Blanc’s costume party. prefers to join Kyle at Dalim’s bar instead for a more laid back celebration
Dean:
Teams up with Blanc in organizing the Halloween festival
Is a huge folklorist and can tell you all sorts of weird and creepy stories about Cradle’s history
owns a whole library about it, actually
being a teacher, he does fun things throughout the day for his students to get them in the Halloween spirit
his students put on a play for the Halloween festival that is usually about some Cradle folklore
He’s a good storyteller, so be prepared with a blanket and some hot cocoa when you both sit by a fire and share ghost stories
Dalim/Dum:
Halloween or not, the bar’s gonna be running. Doesn’t mean he can’t get in the spirit of things, though
decorates the place with candles and fog and all
keeps things quiet for those who want a calmer holiday
concocts special drinks for the occasion. Kyle’s favorite is the White Lady, based on the ghost that haunts Central Quarter’s ballroom
Will keep visitors entertained with weird and creepy stories that he’s heard from customers over the years
Mousse:
Halloween is just another day for him
Candy is whatever. He’d rather be given cheese. Prefers harvest festivals since there is cheese in abundance.
has to attend the different public gatherings as a Cradle official
ghosts don’t scare him. doesn’t believe any of the legends to be true
likes to drink warm cider and will fall asleep in front of the fire if he’s at a party

Shot Through The Heart Ch. 2
Tumblr media
Aelin:
Aelin reclined deeper into the massage chair currently working the knots in her upper back, as the water continued to fill at her feet. Mimosa in hand she sighed and closed her eyes, she was at peace for a brief moment before Lysandra shrieked.
“OH. MY. GODS. A, why didn’t you tell me?!” She practically screamed, much to the chagrin of every patron in the upscale salon.
“Tell you what…?” Aelin replied, rolling her head dramatically to the right to look at her friend.
“You’re trending on twitter again” she shoved her phone in Aelin’s face, “and you’ll never believe why!”
Aelin looked at the Twitter homepage and there at the top, with 1 million retweets and counting was #AelinCallHimMaybe. “What the hell? Hang on,” she put down her drink and pulled out her own phone. Flipping apps she went to Twitter to find the hashtag. There was a video linked, by someone with the handle “@moonmoon69”right at the top.
“WAIT! I wanna see this” Lysandra said at the same time Elide, on her left leaned in and said “Click it!” All three girls, heads together and mimosas abandoned, crammed in to look at Aelin’s phone.
She clicked play and immediately one of the most beautiful men she had ever seen appeared on the screen. His sepia toned skin was glowing in the sun, and he had long blonde hair pulled into a bun atop his head. He was wearing a Terrasen Army uniform, though the jacket was completely forgotten, and the t-shirt he wore instead clung to every dip and curve of muscle. He was standing in what was clearly a military post somewhere in the desert and smiling with perfect charm. “Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, you are my Queen. I, Sergeant First Class Fenrys Moonbeam, would like to humbly ask you to accompany me to the Army Ball this year. Please, call me maybe?”
Aelin’s jaw hit the floor as the scene before her cut to boots walking on the ground, and the music began. Suddenly Fenrys was back on the screen lip-syncing the lyrics to possibly the cheesiest pop song ever written, and all three women began laughing. Aelin couldn’t help it when her heart skipped a beat as Fenrys turned to the camera and winked at the end of his verse. The scene changed again and this time Fenrys, and four other men, all equally muscular and attractive, were laying on chaise lounges in nothing but short-shorts and combat boots.
“You have to say yes, look at them!” Lysandra squealed, while Elide nodded vigorously on her other side.
The men continued to lip sync from different places on the base, always shirtless and shining with sweat. Aelin at this point had began to laugh hysterically, and all three girls crooned over the men dancing on screen. They had absolutely no talent, but seemed not to care how ridiculous they looked as they popped up from the dirt and lit off colored smoke in the background. Each of the six men had a turn to solo into the camera. Aelin’s breath caught again when, towards the end, the silver haired man with tattoos seductively danced around in what looked to be a makeshift kiddy-pool.
The last frame was all of them looking over the camera from above and smirking, before they walked away. The twitter handle @moonmoon69 popped up once more with the hashtag #AelinCallHimMaybe below it. All three girls were still giggling as she closed the link out, and looked up from her phone.
“Sweet gods,” she breathed, trying to calm herself down a bit. “Did you know the Army made men that look like that?”
“Did you see the one with long dark hair and black eyes? He looks like an angry sex God, and I think I need him in my life,” Elide replied.
“You’re saying ‘yes’ right? Do it for me, us.. Do it for Terrasen. It’s your civic duty,” Lysandra pleaded.
“For Terrasen?” Aelin replied with a conspiratorial grin, “Fuck it, i’m in. But you two are helping me figure out how to respond to this and, you’re coming with me. But first-” she chugged her previously forgotten mimosa, “Pedicures.”
***********************
“How do I even go about doing this?” Aelin asked over brunch a few hours later. The three women hadn’t stopped swooning over the men in the video, and if Aelin was being honest they had watched it three more times before ever arriving at their table.
“Well you obviously need to DM him” Elide replied, ever the voice of reason.
“Buuuuuut,” Lys dragged out the word with a smirk, “I think you should make a video of your own. It’s good press and he’s clearly in need of some feminine attention. You’ll blow his mind, and then hopefully other things,” she finished with an outrageous wink.
“LYS!” both Aelin and Elide screeched before the three erupted into a fit of laughter.
When they finally recovered, Aelin agreed that the first step should be making a video of her own. The publicity would do wonders for her, and she could reach out and worry about the logistics later. After a long debate they decided that the best way to respond would be something flirty but not embarrassing. “Let’s give the men overseas something to daydream about,” Aelin finished with a smirk.
*******************************************************
Rowan:
Half awake and entirely pissed, Rowan was sitting at the table eating breakfast with most of his Cadre when Fenrys burst in yelling “I TOLD YOUUUUU!”
“Its 0400. Why the fuck are you yelling?” He practically growled over his coffee.
“Because,” Fenrys smiled as he sat down, “She responded, you’ll never believe this… Hang on.” Fen pulled his laptop out and set it so that they could all see, then directed their attention to a video he had already pulled up. There she was, smiling at the camera with practiced ease, flanked by not one but two equally beautiful and famous women: Lysandra Ennar and Elide Lochan. Rowan’s eyebrows kissed his hairline.
“There is no way-” He began, but was quickly shushed by Gavriel, Connall, Vaughn, and surprisingly even Lorcan. Fenrys pressed play.
The three women were dressed in what could only be described as the “slutty Halloween” version of the uniform Rowan currently had on. Paired with black heeled combat boots and red lipstick, her long tan legs were on full display. Rowan hated to admit it, even to himself, but she was the literal embodiment of his “questionable” teenage dreams.
“Hello gorgeous,” Aelin practically purred. “First and foremost I’d like to thank you and your delicious Cadre for that lovely video.” Rowan choked on his coffee at the name she used for them, the name they used for themselves.
“I’d be honored to be your date to this year’s Ball, but I have a few small requests. My friends here,” she motioned to the women beside her, “would like to accompany us so that we can have a chance to properly thank you for your dedication to Terrasen. We’d like to take you Fenrys, and the men in your video on a night out in Orynth after the ball… If you’re interested.” She grinned at the camera, and the look made Rowan’s heart beat a little too fast.
“If you’ll have us,” Lysandra spoke now, “We’d like to show you around in style. A limo for the event, the penthouse suite at The Palace hotel, and a private after party for your friends and a few more of ours.”
“In the meantime,” Elide continued, “Enjoy the care packages we’ll be sending to each of you just as soon as we get your information. If you have any special requests, don’t hesitate to ask!”
“A little something to help the days go by faster on your long, and hard deployment,” Aelin winked. “We can’t wait to meet you.”
The last shot was all three women blowing a kiss to the camera. Rowan couldn’t believe it. The Princess of Orynth had responded to Fen. It took them nearly an entire day off to make that stupid video, more than one bottle of whiskey, and it had worked.
“Holy shit,” he breathed, the 6 men were still staring with their jaws on the floor at the frozen image of the women on screen, lips still puckered.
“I KNOW!” Fenrys laughed, “I told you it would work, and when we get home we’ll have the most insane night of our lives. You can thank me anytime.”
“Thank you,” the entire cadre chimed in unison while still staring at the screen. The next 2 months were going to drag along knowing what was waiting for them when they returned home.
Rowan cleared his throat, “But, you’re still on laundry duty boyo.”

Interview with Steve Villeneuve, director of Hail to the Deadites.
Below is an interview with Steve Villeneuve whose documentary is currently running on the film festival circuit. This interview was done with the Horror Channel after its viewing at Fright Fest in the UK.
FrightFest 2020 delivered some incredibly entertaining and informative documentaries. Hail to the Deadites from Steve Villeneuve is a celebration of the the Evil Dead series of movies and truly gets under the skin of what the franchise means to those who created it and those who are mega fans! Here Steve talks about this amazing doc.
HC: Can you recall the first time you saw an Evil Dead movie and what it was that grabbed your attention?
SV: I guess I was 13. I actually saw Army of Darkness first on television. Years later, spot the cover of Evil Dead 2 in a video store. Then, rent Evil Dead one without knowing it was the first film because here in Quebec, The Evil Dead is called L'Opera de la Terreur and Evil Dead II is Evil Dead II. I remember been completely confuse while watching the first one because I had the feeling that I saw that film before.
HC: Is it true you own over 60 copies of Evil Dead in different video formats?
SV: I actually own more then that but my collection is really small compare to the collection of fans in the film. Michael, John, Elise and Emmanuel have an amazing collection. Way bigger then mine. I spoke with Dennis (a fan in the movie) and he told me : I was laughing at the scenes of myself as back then I had a lot of Evil Dead items, and now I have A LOT more! Ha ha!
HC: What's your favourite piece of Evil Dead memorabilia in your collection and which one has eluded you so far?
SV: Hard to say! My last purchase was a MCFARLANE TOYS MOVIE MANIACS ARMY OF DARKNESS ASH 18" FIGURE MOTION SOUND. But I would say that I'm really happy with Limited Edition DVD + T-Shirt from Germany that is still sealed.
HC: Do you have a favourite scene from any of the movies?
SV: I kind of like the entire "Pit" sequence from Army of Darkness. For me that scene is where Ash take a step up and become this iconic character. Specially because he's doing the boomstick speech right after.
HC: Why do you think, after all this time this franchise continues to entertain and gain new fans and followers?
SV: The fact that each film is different from one to the other help a lot. But it's really about the character of Ash. Like Bruce is saying in the film, Ashley is the average man. He's not Navy Seal or FBI so fans relate to that. Also, Bruce Campbell really found a way to get a great following.
HC: Which story included in the doc do you consider to be the most memorable?
SV: The easy answer would be the story of Ac McRayr. As a parent it is quite difficult to imagine this situation. But, without telling to much I need to say that Adam story is just amazing. Again, I don't want to spoil anybody so you guys will need to take a look at the film.
HC: Were there any stories you had to cut due to time restrictions?
SV: There's SO many fans that, yeah, we had to make some difficult choice but the choices were made before shooting anything. So we didn't have to cut out some stories for the final cut.
HC: Bruce Campbell seems to be a true force of nature, what is he like in person?
SV: He's really intimidating because he's tall and he exudes a lot of confidence. You just don't want to f**k-up the interview you know. But he was great. He actually sat down with us for a good 15-20 minutes after the interview just to talk. The funny part is when he started talking about the time was in Montreal shooting The Woods because when I shot my first film, Stories of a Gravedigger, I actually shot it in the same hospital about a month after he was there.
HC: This is a true celebration of the movies; would you like to work on another doc for another franchise such as Halloween for example?
SV: Halloween would be a really good choice or maybe the Scream franchise. But I think my choice would be Halloween because it kind of started the Slasher films which I am a big fan.
HC: Do you think the often talked about 4th (or 5th including the remake/reboot/reimaging, whatever you want to call it) movie should be made and if so where should it be set?
SV: I'm a huge fan of the 2013 movie. I think it's one of the best remake/reboot along The Hills Have Eyes and Dawn of the Dead. I just really hope that they will continue and that, at some point, the universe of this film will cross the universe of the original films.
HC: The doc is getting its International premiere at a virtual event, will you still be as nervous when its unleashed for people to see?
SV: Of course I will. I'm pretty sad not to be at Fright Fest but there's nothing we can do about it. You know, where you are doing a feature film, you know that you will get some super bad reviews. In this case, it's more personal because there's real fans in it. The good thing is that most of them saw the movie and loved it. So I'm at peace.
HC: So, what are you up to at the moment?
SV: I'm currently working on the sequel of my first documentary Under the Scares. So far we have a great line-up with people such as Dee Wallace, Bill Moseley, Doug Bradley, Eduardo Sanchez, Felissa Rose, Larry Fessenden, Leanna Quigly, Michael Berryman and Sid Haig. My goal is to have this film ready for next year.
HC: Steve Villeneuve, thank you very much.

In the other five years spent at Hogwarts, being in Hufflepuff house never stopped you from hanging out with Harry, Ron and Hermione. But the sixth year was quickly becoming harder and harder, mostly because of all the little things that you’d never think would stack up. Book smart Hermione was going out with the arse McLagan. Suddenly Harry was getting very good at potions, which you’d usually credit to the lack of Professor Snape’s snark, but even then, it was strange.
Perhaps it was neither of those things that stopped you from hanging out with them all.
And it didn’t help that with all the newfound changes with your group of friends, Ron had changed too. He was much taller since the last time you saw him, his freckles duplicated, his smile wider. Some of that could be due to the fact he was the eldest Weasley at Hogwarts now, the rest from his summer spent with Harry Potter at his house in the countryside. You’d wanted to stay with the Weasley’s, but your gran in Wales was hosting the family reunion and your family didn’t miss those sorts of events.
Ever since Dumbledore’s Army took on the ministry, your feelings for Ron had multiplied, mostly because it was you who got him out from his mishaps with the brains. It wasn’t just because of his pretty face, he said dumb things that made you smile.
There was a Hogsmeade trip coming up, and it was scheduled a week before Halloween. Usually, there wasn’t anything to make a big deal out of. It was just another trip. But you were sixteen years old, and with the pumpkin-riddled festivities blooming, it was opportune for students to make it…romantic.
“You could take Cho,” Ron joked. “You know, since the last time you took her to Hogsmeade went so well.”
“You’re a prat,” Harry retorted. He whacked at his friend with the roll of parchment he was supposed to be essaying with. It bonked Ron on the forehead, “you know that, right?”
“Oh, be quiet, I don’t want to be kicked out again!” Hermione shushed.
You looked at Ron. “Have you asked anyone yet?”
Knowing Ron and Harry, there was a low to no chance that they’d asked anyone. You knew that because at the Yule Ball in the fourth year, they had taken forever to get dates for the dance. You even got a date for it before Ron had even considered you; which, much to your chagrin, was after he asked Hermione.
“I’m going with Lavender Brown,” he said, in a chipper tone. “I asked her after Quidditch practice yesterday. I think she fancies me.”
You look at Harry and Hermione. While he looked dubiously at his friend, Hermione wasn’t paying any mind, writing quickly in small lettering on her essay. While you weren’t the best person to intervene on this because of your other hesitations - i.e. your own feelings for Ron - you had to say something.
“You know, she can be a tad obsessive.” You tell him, and lower your voice as to not attract attention from the other students studying in the library, “You remember Trelawny’s prediction about her rabbit?”
“That was our third year,” he rolls his eyes. “I’m pretty sure we’ve all matured since we were thirteen.”
Harry continued to look at Ron in a dubious nature.
Setting her quill into the inkwell, Hermione looked to you. She had to be your closest friend, and the pair of you knew each other well. She gave you a small smile, and asked, “Has anyone asked you for the trip yet, ________?”
“No,” you look at your hands, feeling a little silly. If there was one thing that Hermione knew, it was that Ron was not emotionally mature, even if he was puberty’s poster boy. “I was going to ask Neville since we’re both good at Herbology, but he’s going with -,”
“I’ll go with you, ________.” Harry interrupted.
Both Hermione and Ron looked at Harry. This time nobody was dubious.
“You don’t have to, I know you’d rather go with someone you fancy,” you say quickly, feeling sort of put on the spot. “Like, you know…anyone else.”
“We can go as friends,” Harry added. “Do you want to come too, Hermione?”
She rolled her eyes. “Sure, why not. It’s not like I’ll get much homework done if I stay behind anyway.”
Ron made a funny noise. “Looks like I’m the only one who gets to snog this trip to Hogsmeade,” he boasted, looking rather proud.
You look down at your hands.
---
While Quidditch itself was the sweetheart of the school, any match that involved Gryffindor versus Slytherin made everyone go mad with adrenaline.
It was a very anticipated thing, to put it mildly. Luna wore her lion hat again, this time charmed to sound like Dumbledore shouting “ten points to Gryffindor!” every time Gryffindor scored points with the quaffle. You were supposed to sit with the Hufflepuffs, but you managed to sneak away to the place where Luna, Hermione and Neville were sitting nearby the Gryffindor seats. While you didn’t much like Quidditch seeing as Hufflepuff never really won, whenever it was a match against Slytherin you took the side of anyone against the emerald and silver house.
You were excited to watch Ginny Weasley play, her first game as a Chaser. Ron was back as a Keeper, Harry as Seeker. Not that you’d memorised the reclaimed verses of Weasley is Our King in preparation, but you were wearing one of Hermione’s old red and gold scarves.
While Ginny was scoring like a fiend, the Slytherin beaters were working up a storm for the Gryffindor beaters to keep the bludgers from, well, bludgeoning their own. Neville kept his eye on Harry, anticipating where the snitch would be, and Luna waved a handmade flag that simply said roar! In her handwriting.
You watched Ron.
He spent every second of the game covering the goalposts, and for every goal that Ginny scored, he kept out four. In fact, you weren’t sure if he hadn’t had something special on his side, it was so spectacular. It made you almost wish you could bottle up the confidence.
“Harry’s seen the snitch!” Neville cried, pointing.
You could see a glint of gold above, and you watched with bated breath as Harry began to dive for it, prompting Draco to follow in pursuit. It seemed like the rest of the players were watching too, except, the Slytherin chasers, who took the advantage and began to move to score during the distraction.
“Watch out, Ron!” you shout, standing up.
You’re not sure if he heard you, or if he saw them coming, but as soon as they neared, he blocked the shot, and Madame Hooch blew her whistle. Surely enough, Harry had caught the snitch, and Gryffindor won the game.
“What was the score again?” Luna asked Neville.
“Four hundred and fifty to eighty,” he replied, almost giddy. You felt the same glee as him; you could only imagine Professor Snape’s sour mood in Defence Against the Dark Arts to follow the game. “I can’t believe it.”
“I can,” Hermione grinned.
As the team were dismounting their brooms, the stands starting to empty, the majority of the Gryffindors and those who were rooting for them began to sing the anthem of the house, the ode to Ron Weasley. And now Ginny, seeing as she was also a Weasley. You’d try and work out if you could adapt the new version of it to mention her.
But as you neared the team, wanting to congratulate Harry and Ron, you watched as Lavender Brown beat you to it, and flung herself into Ron’s long arms.
“Oh, they’re still a thing,” Hermione commented. She sounded dismayed. Inside, you felt it too.
---
The celebrations afterwards happen in the Great Hall, where everyone parades through with the victorious hoisted on their shoulders. You would go and shake hands with the captain of Slytherin usually as a show of sportsmanship, but you’re swept into the parade of Gryffindors. As the evening progresses, the celebrations don’t die down; they are just moved on the other side of the Fat Lady portrait, of which you’re invited to join by Neville.
It’s a fun celebration behind closed doors; the glory-seeking Gryffindors get a little rowdy after a few bottles of butterbeer are drunken, someone charmed a few instruments to play in the corner, and people are dancing. You’re quietly standing in the corner, talking to Harry when you notice Ron in the middle of the room.
“I can’t believe it’s almost Christmas,” Harry says, but you can’t quite focus on his words.
You’re watching Ron, seeing him in almost slow-motion. It was funny how you’d always fancied him; it was at first like a mosquito bite, painful, and aching. You’d met him rather abruptly at the end of the first year when he and Hermione were racing to find Professor McGonagall following what wouldn’t be the first of their misadventures with Harry. He’d run headlong into you while turning a corner, and the both of you sprawled across the hallway like bowling pins.
After that, you just sort of kept your ache to yourself, and grew more and more lovesick as the years went by. That’s how crushes worked, right? You kept them to yourself, and that way, your heart was never broken.
Lavender Brown approached Ron, and you almost felt jealous of her courage. She was a true Gryffindor, gutsy and brave. And using these traits, you watched as she took Ron’s face in her hands and kissed him.
You couldn’t stay a second longer and left Harry by himself.
You were halfway down the hallway when you heard your name, and turning, you saw Hermione in pursuit. She caught up to you quite easily, but you tried to hide your face. You hadn’t realised you’d started crying until you blinked, and then it just wouldn’t stop.
“He’s such a prat,” she said, dismayed.
You sniff, unable to stop yourself from looking to her. “You like him. I know.”
She rolled her eyes. “I like pumpkin juice, but I wouldn’t snog it,” she replied and approached you with open arms. “Besides, anyone with eyes would know you’re into him.
“Even Harry?”
“Merlin, no,” Hermione chuckles. “Even with his glasses, that boy can’t see anything beyond his nose.”
You find the both of you are in an alcove of the castle, tucked against the wall beside a window. There’s lots of moonlight tonight, and it spills inside like a shower of silver light that makes you think of a myth or an incandescent waterfall. While you sniffle, Hermione waves her wand, and wordlessly, conjures a handkerchief, appliqued with flowers.
You’re curled into her side, upset, and nearly don’t hear the footsteps down the hallway. By the voices alone, it’s Lavender Brown, and no doubt, Ron Weasley. You glance up from Hermione’s shoulder, and through your watery gaze, you see them both there, watching you, hesitant, but with an undeniable joy across their faces.
“C’mon, let’s go,” Lavender giggles to Ron.
It’s then you see their hands, fingers interwoven. You stand up abruptly. In a swift movement, you take your wand out and pointing it at the pair of them, you cast, “relashio!” the same time that Hermione conjures a small flock of canaries, and mutters “oppugno!”
Their hands snap back to their sides, and eyes wide, you watch as they flee the onslaught of birds, taking their leave from your presence.
“Are you okay?” she takes the remaining bird from the air above her head, quietly placing it in your hands. It nestles in, and its warmth distracts you from the chill spreading across your chest. “I swear that boy has the-,”
“It’s okay,” you sigh.
Bringing the bird flush against your cheek, you sigh once more. As it nips at your face, the charm wears off, and a shower of canary yellow glitter fills your hands. It falls through, like sand in the hands of a man lost in the desert, and you feel the same way.
---
You try to keep your distance from the exchanges between Ron and Lavender by staying away. In fact, the next time you have time to be in Harry and Hermione’s company is the next Hogsmeade trip, which is just before Christmas. Harry got an owl from his aunt and uncle that he could stay at the Burrow, as did Hermione, and you. While you’re not so much happy to be around Ron so much, the thought of being with Ginny, the twins, and Charlie made it seem a little easier to bear.
“I don’t know what to get you both for Christmas,” you say, shoving your hands into your pockets as you walk the streets of Hogsmeade. You pass Madame Puddifoots, and Zonko’s, but nothing inside makes you feel a tug.
“I could do with another quill,” Harry says offhand.
Hermione takes the end of her scarf and thwacks him lightly. “In case you’ve forgotten, you’re rich enough to buy any number of quills you’d ever want.” She reprimands.
The bookshop looks quiet, and you look in the window before entering.
“________, it’s unlikely they’re in there.” Harry says, uncharacteristically mindful. “…Hermione, don’t you need to buy something for your mum?”
“We’ll meet you at the Three Broomsticks after for butterbeer,” Hermione says, a cheeriness to her voice.
You do love butterbeer.
You take a deep breath as your two friends walk off and square your shoulders to enter the bookstore. It’s a marvellous place, filled with school textbooks and empty notebooks and dotted with copies of popular books that were often borrowed from the library. The owner is busy with a customer you can’t quite see in the rear of the store, and so you’re free to browse.
Usually, you’d gift your friends handknitted scarves or candles made in your dormitory, but this year you hadn’t had the time, nor headspace for such things.
Your hand falls upon a copy of Hogwarts: A History at the same time as another customer. Your hands brush, their skin warm, and you withdraw, an apology ready at the tip of your lips. But as you turn, you see that it’s no other than -
“Ron,” you say, the same time he says,
“________,”
You go back for the book, and in his hesitation, you withdraw it from the shelf. You hold it close to your chest, and when you face him properly. It’s been almost a month since you cast that jinx on him. You notice that his hair is tidier today, jeans a good inch above his ankles, but there’s a new look in his eyes.
“How’s…er, Lavender?” you ask him, hesitant.
He shrugs. “I don’t know.” He pockets his hands, and adds, “I broke up with her. She was a bit clingy; it was hard to think straight.” He nods toward you, a small, wan smile upon his lips. He adds, quietly, “I missed you.”
You blink. “You never saw me if I wasn’t with Harry and Hermione,” you say, quiet, unsure. You take a deep breath, feeling rather mature. “Why now?”
“I’m a prat,” he says, abruptly. “I can’t believe it took nearly losing my friend to realise I want to be more than that to her.” he rubs at his face, and there’s a redness underneath his freckles. “To you.” He amends.
“I don’t want my heartbroken,” you say quickly. “I don’t want to be another Lavender.” You narrow your eyes, pursing your lips a little, regarding your friend, evaluating. “Well…you better make it up to me. I’m meeting Harry and Hermione at the Three.”
“I’ll buy you a drink,” he says.
“First, I’ve got to buy this,” you tell him, looking at the copy of Hogwarts: A History. You begin moving toward the owner of the store and their register. “It’s a present for Harry.”
“That reminds me, I’ve got to get some tea for my mum,” Ron tells you. “On the way to the Three -,”
“Madame Puddifoot’s, yeah,” you reply. “Sure.”
---
Hermione and Harry sit at their often-used table, the first round of butterbeer half-drank. The only people coming into the Three Broomsticks are teachers, and wizards from Hogsmeade coming in to whet their whistles. Harry looked down at his mug, a smile tugging at his tankard.
“What are you up to, Harry?” Hermione scrutinises, eyes narrow.
“Oh, nothing,” he says, taking another sip. If his mouth was full, he couldn’t reply. But Hermione was persistent, holding his gaze. He swallowed, and feeling rather proud of himself, he said, “I can’t help it if Ron’s DADA textbook was covered in spilt ink yesterday.” He shrugged and took another swig of his drink.
Hermione beamed at his craftiness. “And I can’t help it if I merely suggested to ________ that you’d be better off reading Bathilda Bagshot’s book,” she smirked.
The pair clinked their tankards and took another swig.

Halloween 2020 - Day 1 - The Stand (1994) - Episode 1 The Plague
Tumblr media
Gee, an epic post-apocalyptic story about an out of control pandemic. Never heard that one before.
Much as we like to tie the Halloween season to the Christmas one by opening up with a festive horror movie, why not link back to the TV binging that provided some content to this blog earlier in the year by partaking in this mini series? We’re only covering part one here today as this is like four feature length episodes. In a worst case scenario, the rest will serve as backups that I can plug in if I’m having an off day so to help me from falling behind. But ideally they’ll go up once a week on the same day as a standard movie post. You manage to go back to actually doing 31 entries for the first time in donkeys years and it all goes to your head and you suddenly think you can do 34!
This has actually been on my list for quite a while now, we do love a good (or bad) Stephen King adaptation around here and I have a distinct memory of seeing this on TV when I was a kid. I’m guessing it must have played over a few nights over here at some point or maybe over a bank holiday or something? Not that I really remember much in the way of details, just the cornfields and a creepy face which we’ll get on to.

It’s something that’s stuck with me over all these years, I actually got a copy of the book at one point in what must have been the early to mid 2000’s. Still have it actually, I dug it out for the sake of this entry. Seems it’s a version from 1980 from it’s first run as a paperback in the UK. Seems to have a page or two missing near the start in amongst all the copywright business but otherwise it’s in okay shape.
Tumblr media
Even has some writing on the first page that I can only make out in parts, one section seems to read ‘an old man beats a mule’. Or perhaps, more pertinently to this story, a mute...
Tumblr media
Cover seems a bit dull and non descript compared to the various other ones that have come out over the years. There’s something interesting to this original version with the two figures fighting, very much a literal take on the good versus evil nature of the story with one figure dressed in light colours and the other dark. The dark figure is wielding a scythe which is obviously closely associated with the Grim Reaper. Seems to have some form of beak sticking out of its hood too and the robes and shoes seem to be almost harlequin or jester type clothes?
I wasn’t really expecting much going into it, especially based on the 1990 mini-series of It. I think because of the nature of It being partly set in the 60’s, as well the contemporary portion which just looks very 80’s, gives it this image in my head of being very dated. Outside of a few actors like Tim Curry, John Ritter and Seth Green, there’s not really any notable stars in it either and even though, Green’s notably arguably came much later on. The Stand though? This thing has some names, even if the bigger ones are just small cameos. Amongst the main cast you’ve got Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald and Rob Lowe. Obviously Ringwald isn’t a massive star or anything and is only really known for that string of John Hughes movies in the 80’s but around this time was peak Sinise. He’s not long removed from starring in Of Mice and Men (...and men....and men...) and would have roles in Forrest Gump, Apollo 13 and Ransom in the following years. Plus that big stretch in CSI:NY in the 00’s. But then you’ve got people like Ed Harris and Kathy Bates showing up, albeit briefly but these guys have some clout. I mean, Bates had just won the Academy Award a few years prior for her role in Misery so maybe she felt compelled to do more work under the King umbrella. Even the more minor roles seem like a roll call of ‘hey, it’s you!’ with Ken Jenkins (AKA Bob Kelso from Scrubs), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the proprietor of Joe Bob’s Drive In, Joe Bob Briggs.
The landscape of TV feels very different today with actors much more willing to work in the field as it’s taken on much more artistic integrity. The greater availability of shows after they’ve aired, be it through DVR, home media or streaming, has enabled people to watch in far greater numbers. There was a time when the big break was deemed to be making it to Hollywood and starring in motion picture epics but it seems more and more that story tellers are moving away from the relatively cramped 2 hour-ish format of the silver screen to having their vision play out over a long form story and the big name actors are following suit. I feel like things would have been very different back in the early 90’s so to have these names attached.
Seems for a long time there were plans to turn this into a movie, it’s even referred to during a ‘making of’ feature on the blu-ray (pretty much the only feature on there I might add) as a ‘motion picture epic’ but this must have been done way into production so either they were confused or trying to mislead viewers for some reason? Apparently in the early 80’s the idea was for the success of Creepshow to finance production of The Stand but took until the early 90’s for everyone to finally settle on the miniseries.
Very much a big budget affair too for a TV Show, $6m per episode. And it’s needed given the scale of the story, taking place in all these different locations, the special effetcs and with so many characters involved with over 125 speaking roles across the series. It’s definitely a jump up from It, even though that had the two different time periods, it only had a budget of $12m across its two parts compared to the $24m here across four parts.
But to finally address the massive elephant in the room, this story centers around an outbreak of a strain of influenza seemingly created in some shadowy government facility. After something goes awry in the lab, a doomed insider pleads with the guy watching the main gate to seal the facility but he instead piss bolts for his nearby house and hurriedly bundles his wife and child into their car as they make their escape. Everyone else is not nearly as fortunate though as the camera pans the facility, lifeless corpses strewn throughout that have seemingly dropped dead in the middle of their everyday activities, there’s even one guy doubled over on a ping pong table. All of this is set to the sounds of BOC’s Don’t Fear the Reaper and culminates with the image of a crow picking at a doll dropped by the child in the rush out of the front gate. The crow features prominently on the front cover of the blu-ray I have, perched atop of a skull. Though, I know they’re going for the whole post-apocalyptic vibe but what about the superflu is causing the road to burn up and crack like that? The bird also shows up a fair bit throughout the episode, I was going to talk about it being a raven and how such birds are linked with ill omen and death but it’s a crow apparently. Who knew? Not me, I’m no ornithologist. It also seems to be very closely linked with a mysterious figure that is alluded to throughout, a ‘dark man’ or monster.
When the original carrier of the disease makes his way into Arnette, Texas, and crashes into the gas station that Sinise’s character Stu Redman is working at, his dying words are of his efforts to escape from a dark man that was chasing him and that no one can out run him. Maybe in that moment you’d think this is just a state of delirium and he’s speaking oddly poetically about trying to outrun Death himself but as the show goes on, more and more people speak of this dark man, almost as if everyone in the grip of this disease comes to share this vision.
And speaking of visions, we can’t forget Mother Abigail and her cornfields. Both Lowe and Sinise’s characters are whisked away in their dreams to the middle of nowhere where a centurion on her porch warns of them of an ominous future. Think Mama Murphy from Fallout 4 only with much less chem addiction. The only thing Mama Abigail needs is her bread. What is it with King and fields anyway? You’ve got In the Tall Grass, plus the corn fields here and in Children of the Corn. There’s probably more I’m forgetting too. It’s either cornfields, writers in distress or killer ‘whatever I can see in front of me whilst I’m pitching this story’ with this guy.
In a way though it’s good that the show takes this supernatural turn because otherwise this would be a little too on the nose to be watching in this current climate. It’s very eerie to see such similar events play out on screen, starting with the widespread rumours and misinformation. It starts out innocently enough with talk of this so called superflu being downplayed, covered up by the government as an anthrax attack or outbreak of swineflu. I remember back to those more innocent times at the start of the year when COVID was naively dismissed as little more than another flavour of the month disease like the swineflu, sars or ebola that would be here today and gone tomorrow. But then you’ve got things like the sense of paranoia suddenly surrounding a simple cough or sneeze, talks of quarantines, social distancing, the implementation of masks (which one reporter describes as not being able to stop a flu germ with a hangover) to the more disturbing scene of lethal force being used against a TV news crew who refuse to surrender footage they’ve shot of army troops disposing of bodies. Granted, we never got anywhere near that level, I think the worst we had was that guy from CNN getting arrested or that Aussie reporter being pushed over.
They even managed to mirror how universal a pandemic like this is, from the common man to the height of celebrity. One of the characters we’re introduced to is a singer who, whilst he seems to be one of the few lucky to have some immunity, still sees his mother succumb to the virus. Just like we saw with the likes of BoJo or Tom Hanks, it really is a great leveller and, as a wise man once said, ‘You might be a King or a little street sweeper but sooner or later you dance with the Reaper!’. I guess we can take solice that we haven’t quite had the societal collapse that this show manages to pull off in less than a week, with Times Square on fire and a guy running around shooting people like he’s in Falling Down. That’s not to say we wont get there, we seem to be hovering more around general civil disobedience right now with the growing frustration of lockdown and PPE spilling out into protests.
It makes for compelling viewing to see how quickly things break down from simply a man having the sniffles to people being rounded up from their homes and ushered into army vehicles. There’s a lot to take in as the show has to establish the events taking place and introducing it’s multitude of characters so there’s not really much room to breathe. Hopefully episode 2 can relax a little now and give the cast some time to grow. There’s still some standout performances though such as Redman’s growing frustration at being cooped up in a test facility, lashing out at the doctors and nurses coming in in their hazmat suits, prodding and poking him. It would have been nice to see more scenes with him and Dr. Dietz. They have one argument where they nearly come to blows before having a big showdown by the end, with the Doc being one of the last staff members left alive, seemingly crazed by their inability to find any answers in Redman’s tests and he threatens to take his frustrations out on Redman by shooting him. He might be immune to the virus but I bet he’s not immune to a bullet. Dietz starts out with this complete lack of empathy, almost to the point of having a rather cheery deposition considering the circumstances, as he finds some fascination in the speed at which the virus causes death. But he becomes more and more short tempered and threatening as the days wear on and it would have been good to see a more gradual descent.
The aforementioned Ed Harris plays General Starkey overseeing the initial bioweapon project and the fallout of it’s outbreak, perhaps overseeing to a fault as it becomes pretty clear from his ever increasing five o’clock shadow, dishevelled clothing and massive bags under his eyes that he’s slept very sparingly since the initial breach in containment. I think for the entire time we see him, his screen never changes from a shot of one of the cooks at the base of the initial outbreak slumped over, face down in the meal he was preparing. It makes a bit of a change to go from the quite verbal exchanges of Redman and Dietz to Starkey’s physical appearance and facial expressions putting across his mood.

Demented Suburbia.
Greener Grass writer-director-stars Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe share their favorite films while pontificating on extreme politeness, John Waters and The Swimmer.
New indie comedy Greener Grass is not the Netflix marijuana documentary Grass is Greener, but you could be forgiven for making that mistake after the directors of the former gave out free marijuana at a recent outdoor screening, according to their friend Jim Cummings (who makes a cameo in the film, and lurks on Letterboxd).
It’s been a case of watch-and-learn for other up-and-coming filmmakers, as Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe have stormed the 2019 festival scene with their utterly weird and wonderfully bonkers debut feature. Nobody is doing red carpet lewks like them, nobody else is handing out free weed (that we know of), and nobody else has made a film quite like theirs. Attracting comparisons to the films of David Lynch, Anna Biller and Tim Burton, but utterly at home in its own creepily perfect world, Greener Grass is the WTF-is-up-with-white-people film America deserves right now.
And it’s the culmination of years of creative growth for DeBoer and Luebbe, friends and Upright Citizens Brigade veterans, whose suburban moms Jill and Lisa first appeared in the Paul Briganti-directed short of the same name (for which they won the 2016 SXSW Special Jury Award for Recognition for Writing). DeBoer and Luebbe stepped into the directing chairs for The Arrival, another short exploring demented suburbia, while developing Greener Grass for television.
When a series failed to eventuate, they spun Jill and Lisa’s world into the feature film, landing on the unforgettable location of Peachtree City, Alabama, a real town built for the golf-cart lifestyle. Greener Grass hit the spot for many Letterboxd members at its Sundance premiere: “Just what I needed after seeing so many dark films!” was Alicia Malone’s reaction. “Unlike anything I've ever seen but … tackles ideas I have never been more familiar with,” wrote Karsten.
The story kicks off when Lisa compliments Jill on her newest baby and Jill, following suburban rules of politeness, hands the baby over to Lisa to raise. This is far from the strangest thing that will happen to a child in Greener Grass.
We needed to know where this wild duo get their filmmaking inspiration from. When we spoke with DeBoer and Luebbe they were in “high heaven”, having just held the LA premiere of Greener Grass.
Tumblr media
Lisa, Dennis, their son Bob, their adopted daughter Madison (now Paige), and their newborn soccer ball, in a family portrait from ‘Greener Grass’.
What were some of the real-life ‘greener grass’ moments that inspired your film? Dawn Luebbe: There’s one story which Jocelyn tells about her aunt who was at a dinner party one night. She was in the kitchen talking to the host and complimented them on her apron—“that’s a cute apron!”—and the host took it off and said it “you must have it, take my apron.” At once she was like, “oh no, I just like it, I don’t need it,” and the host insisted and wouldn’t drop it. So that night Jocelyn’s aunt left with that apron. Of course, that’s just a very small example of politeness taken to the extreme. We took that general vibe and added to it and really blew it out.
Jocelyn DeBoer: I feel like we experience this at restaurants too. Dawn and I are from the Midwest, so we have a problem where no-one ever really wants to eat the last bite of something that’s shared. I do remember one experience where I was on a double-date with some acquaintances I didn’t know so well and we were eating sushi. Someone had those crispy rice things that have some spicy tuna on top and when the waiter brought it out, one of them fell to the floor. Our friend just picked it up and said “10 second rule!”. The waiter felt bad and offered to bring new ones and we were saying, “Yes, get the new sushi. Don’t eat that one off the floor!” But the person didn’t want to make the waiter feel bad and ate it right in front of them. I thought, ‘this is a Greener Grass moment for sure!’.
You’ve said elsewhere that you tried to avoid referencing other films in the development of yours, but can you tell us some films that you love, that peddle in the same story area of ‘demented suburbia’? JD: We always admit that we were watching Twin Peaks together at the time we were making our short, so there’s no denying that David Lynch is an inspiration to us. Mulholland Drive, of course. Blue Velvet, too. The two of us just love John Waters, he rocks.
DL: We love how John Waters satirizes suburbia but he also clearly has such love and adoration for it too. It’s our dream to strike the same balance.
JD: Yeah, we’re laughing with the people we grew up with, not just at them.
DL: I would say also Edward Scissorhands was another movie that was a point of reference in terms of the bright pastel color-block world, with this element of darkness filtering in.
JD: We love satires like Brazil, the visual comedy especially. We both loved that surreal world. Luis Buñuel, of course, with The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, has the sketch-like aspects in a narrative film we wanted to do. We could just go on!
Tumblr media
Jill (Jocelyn DeBoer) and Marriott (Janicza Bravoin) in a scene from ‘Greener Grass’.
Greener Grass technically has a lot in common with great horror films—one of our members, Sara, writes: “This reminded me so much of Halloween with the use of voyeurism and the John Carpenter-esque score… Suburban moms are ten times scarier than Michael Myers”. So since it’s Hallowe’en, tell us your favorite, go-to horror films. JD: I don’t know if this counts as a Hallowe’en movie but I love Rosemary’s Baby. That and The Shining come to mind first.
DL: Those two very much for me too. You know, I have to admit that maybe until about five years ago, I thought I was not a fan of horror. I feel a little not in the best position to speak to that. I tried very much to cram in what I can and then I discovered I actually love horror movies.
JD: The funny thing is that no-one loves true crime more than Dawn!
DL: Yes, true crime is my greatest passion.
Which film turned you onto horror, Dawn? DL: I actually think it was Rosemary’s Baby. I saw that and thought ‘this is very scary and I love it’. This is more recent, but Get Out, too. I found the marriage of comedy and horror to just be incredible and the visuals in that movie, to have such a sense of cinematic comedy-horror, just blew my mind.
You gave some of the best lines to the child actors in Greener Grass. What was your approach to working with them to capture the absurd spirit of the film? DL: That’s so nice! We absolutely love Julian Hilliard, who plays Julian, and Asher Miles Fallica, who plays Bob. From the second we saw their audition tape, they so got the tone, the characters, and they just jumped off the screen for us. They’re so mature in a way. They understood the comedy and the tone in a way we did not anticipate.
JD: They took their roles so seriously. One story we love about Julian is how he had to fall in the pool and we shot that very early on. We told him we want him to fall just like a plank and we’re showing him YouTube videos of planking so he was practising it in the hotel pool. We went on the day to shoot that scene, and the take that’s in the movie is our first and only take. He just nailed it perfectly. A couple weeks later, we went to shoot the first scene of the movie, which is when he falls in the soccer field. We go to shoot it and Julian starts to fall in a hard plank, just like he did in the pool but on the grass. We were like, “wait, no no no, you don’t have to fall like that!” and he just looked at us and went, “but that’s how Julian falls!”
What streaming platform is Kids with Knives on? Seriously: we’re fans of films that build a complete world within, including the fake shows and commercials you see playing on television sets. Can you tell us some inside stories of developing those? JD: Those were so much fun for us to work on.
DL: These kids were just so incredibly enthusiastic and Jocelyn had them circle round and asked them what kind of gymnastics can you do, let’s see what you got. And then one after the other they were doing the splits, back-handstands… We thought, ‘this is great—Gymnastics and Knives!’ We should have been filming that.
We’ve really enjoyed showing your trailer to people for that ‘what-the-fuck’ reaction. What’s a bizarre film that you love to recommend to people? (We asked this same question to Daniel Scheinert who directed Swiss Army Man and The Death of Dick Long and he said Greener Grass.) JD: Wait, are you kidding?! That’s so nice, oh my gosh! The first film that came to mind is Dogtooth. I’m always curious to talk to people about that one. Dawn, what about The Swimmer? Have you seen The Swimmer? You have to. It’s the Burt Lancaster vehicle.
DL: It’s about a man who crosses his county by swimming across every swimming pool. I’ll just say: what you think the movie is in the beginning turns out to be very different to what the movie is. The protagonist changes quite a bit.
JD: One of the coolest things about how we’re travelling the world promoting Greener Grass is how we get to talk to people afterwards and they go, “Oh the movie reminds me of this, it reminds me of that.” It was the director of Fantastic Fest who told us we have to watch The Swimmer. We watched it on the plane and there is a scene where a man is kind of obsessed with the filtration system in his pool. Everyone is talking about how great their pools are the whole movie, so yes, this is like our movie, thank you.
DL: There’s also a passionate monologue about a hot-dog wagon that’s the best thing that ever happened in cinema.
JD: It’s fantastic!
What are your go-to comfort movies? How many times do you think you’ve seen them? DL: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory I’ve probably seen 500 times.
JD: I really love Dumb & Dumber. I’m also a big comfort watcher of the Sex and the City TV show but I don’t recommend the movies!
What’s a film you wish you had made? JD: I want to say Roma, but that movie couldn’t be more different from Greener Grass. I loved it.
DL: For me, I’ll say Waiting for Guffman. It has such a special place in my heart. I just remember when I was probably fifteen or sixteen seeing that movie in Nebraska and laughing so hard my stomach hurt and thinking, ‘wow, movies can be like this?’
What’s a beloved movie you couldn’t get into? JD: Now I just feel bad talking about other films in a bad way. I’m really glad this film exists—but personally I had trouble getting into the Wonder Woman movie. I think there’s a lot of cool things about it. Maybe I’m just over superhero movies.

Dennis and Jill share an extra-marital kiss in ‘Greener Grass’.
You told a journalist at Sundance that you “did have one storyline that you pulled late in the game in fear that it might be taking something too far. We still fight about that decision and Dawn is wrong”. Are you prepared to tell us that twist now?! JD: I don’t know why I said that because we just set ourselves up to be asked that all the time. We are not going to tell you what it is, but we can tell you one storyline that Dawn and I actually loved that we ended up cutting before going into production. In a previous draft of ours, Buck, Kim Ann’s husband, who she divorces and he starts to become a cowboy, shows up at a kid’s birthday party with a new girlfriend and all the women are gossiping about, “Oh no, did you hear Buck has a new girlfriend, her name is Pamela,” and, well, she’s just hair. It turns out when we meet Pamela, she is just a very large, floating blowout. At this time Buck was also trying to sell a jet-ski because Pamela can’t do wind. It was a favorite bit of ours.
We did a few script readings with our comedy writer friends and paid attention to what people laughed at and what people talked about afterwards. No-one ever mentioned Pamela. They didn’t say she was confusing, they didn’t say they liked her nor that they didn’t like her. And we were, like, for just a character who’s all hair to not be spoken about at all, it’s not a good sign and we should lose her. Since then, we had people who read those scripts and [said]: “Why is Pamela not in the movie?!” and we’re now “Well, damn. We don’t know!”
DL: Maybe we’ll make a movie about Pamela one day.
You were working with such a great cast of improvisers. How did you strike a balance between what you had on the page, and what they could bring on set; in what ways did they surprise and delight you? Not only your actors, but for the artists on set such as your costume and production designers. DL: We were just so blessed to work with these incredible improvisers; Mary Holland (Kim Ann), D’Arcy Carden (the school-teacher, Miss Human), Neil Casey (Lisa’s husband, Dennis) and Beck Bennett (Jill’s husband, Nick). It was such a gift. I would say the movie is probably 95% scripted, so it was pretty close to the script. There were a number of improv moments in the final cut that we absolutely loved. One of my favorite lines in the movie is when Kim Ann is sitting on her porch and Jill arrives and hands her a taco dip and Kim Ann asks “is it seven layers?” and Jill admits it’s only five and Kim Ann says “put it on the floor!” That line is totally improv’d by Mary in the moment. She’s just a dream.
JD: It’s true, our designers added so many things. It was something that we talked about from the very beginning, that we want there to be comedy in every frame of the movie. We love having Easter eggs. We found one after the SXSW screening. Dennis tells a joke at the soccer field and everyone laughs way too hard and he fancies himself a comedian. In the scene in Lisa’s living room when the kids are watching Kids with Knives and Dennis is sleeping, we found that the production designer Leigh Poindexter added a VHS tape that’s sitting on the coffee table that’s just labeled ‘Comedy’, as if Dennis has been studying comedy for his joke, which we thought was so funny.
Our costume designer Lauren Oppelt added so many little touches, but one we really loved: Nick is always wearing our family’s color, pink, and a very gender-normative blue. After Nick and Jill get divorced, he shows up in all beige to go get more pool water, but for the little logo on his polo Lauren embroidered a sad face. It was so funny. We loved that touch.
Finally, a question we’ve been asking filmmakers all year: which film made you want to become filmmakers? JD: It’s so, so long ago but I think for me it was Memento. I saw that when it first came out in the theater, with my Dad. I was just a child then but it blew my mind.
DL: Welcome to the Dollhouse. That was the first true dark comedy I saw where I was deeply disturbed by how much I was laughing. I want to make something like that too.
