"Army-crammer"
You may be wondering what one of these was, so I'll give a quick explanation.
An idea imported from Imperial China, where it had been going since the end of the 6th Century CE, the British at this time had a series of competitive exams you would do if you wanted to join the civil service (either UK or Indian) or become an officer in the British Army. These has been introduced to improve the quality of the men in the organisations and get rid of the problems caused by patronage by selecting on merit.
You would take this exam, covering a wide range of topics from the classics (of course) to modern languages to geography. If you passed, you were eligble for a role, although still needed to undergo the other sorts of checks you still do for employment today - background checks, health checks and also oral testing to make sure you knew your stuff.
Some more stuff here:
I think the "Modern Major-General Song" was influenced by this - officers who had a lot of broad knowledge, but not that much of use in a military context. Although the croaking chorus from The Frogs of Aristophanes would make a great password.
youtube
You would have various organisations, either tutors or full-time schools, to help young men prepare for these exams.
The exams are largely a thing of the past in the UK, but are still very much around in India, where the UPSC to join their civil service is considered possibly the toughest exam in the world:
Those who got into the Army officer training programme would either go to the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich (for the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers) or the Royal Military College in Sandhurst (infantry and cavalry).
However, while these exams were designed to make the Army more merit-based, it still tended to be the richer guys who ended up as "Ruperts". You had to buy a lot of your own kit and maintain it too. You still do have to pay for full ceremonial dress (generally red or black), No. 1 Dress (blue, for ceremonial events) and "mess dress", which is basically the military equivalent of evening wear.
This uniform could be bought from various places, including the Army & Navy Stores, a chain of department stores run by officers from both as a co-operative. Their stores covered a whole range of stuff for soldiers and their families, ranging from groceries to guns. They even expanded to India, although those branches went with independence. In 1973, they were bought out by House of Fraser; a chain that has had a bad last few years, with a large number of its stores closed or closing.
You can get allowances and tax relief on uniform costs today. There is also a big second-hand market.
Also, living the lifestyle associated with being an officer and a gentlemen wasn't cheap. You had to pay your mess bills, ensure that your sword was in good condition, keep up a decent social life etc.
Professor Moriarty from the Sherlock Holmes also was an army coach in his past, by the way.

Canada has long been a draw for people from India's Punjab province seeking new opportunities elsewhere. But has the Canadian dream soured?
It's hard to miss the ardour of Punjab's migrant ambitions when driving through its fertile rural plains.
Billboards promising easy immigration to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK jut out through ample mustard fields.
Off the highways, consultancies offer English language coaching to eager youth.
Single-storey brick homes double up as canvasses for hand-painted mural advertisements promising quick visas. And in the town of Bathinda, hundreds of agents jostle for space on a single narrow street, pledging to speed up the youth's runaway dreams.
For over a century, this province in India's northwest has seen waves of overseas migration; from the Sikh soldiers inducted into the British Indian Army travelling to Canada, through to rural Punjabis settling in England post-independence.
But some, especially from Canada, are now choosing to come back home.
One of those is 28-year-old Balkar, who returned in early 2023 after just one year in Toronto. Citizenship was his ultimate goal when he left his little hamlet of Pitho in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. His family mortgaged their land to fund his education.
But his Canadian dream quickly lost its allure a few months into his life there.
"Everything was so expensive. I had to work 50 hours every week after college, just to survive," he told the BBC. "High inflation is making many students leave their studies."
Balkar now runs an embroidery business from a small room on one side of the expansive central courtyard in his typical Punjabi home. He also helps on his family's farm to supplement his income.
Opportunities for employment are few and far between in these rural areas, but technology has allowed entrepreneurs like him to conquer the tyranny of distance. Balkar gets the bulk of his business through Instagram.
"I have a good life here. Why should I face hardships there when I can live at home and make good money?" he asks.
The BBC spoke to at least half a dozen reverse migrants in Punjab who shared similar sentiments.
It was also a common refrain in the scores of videos on YouTube shared by Indians who had chosen to abandon their life in Canada and return home. There was a stark difference one young returnee told the BBC between the "rosy picture" immigration agents painted and the rough reality of immigrant life in Toronto and Vancouver.
The "Canada craze" has let up a bit - and especially so among well-off migrants who have a fallback option at home, says Raj Karan Brar, an immigration agent in Bathinda who helps hundreds of Punjabis get permanent residencies and student visas every year.
The desire for a Canadian citizenship remains as strong as ever though among middle- and lower middle-class clients in rural communities.
But viral YouTube videos of students talking about the difficulty in finding jobs and protests over a lack of housing and work opportunities has created an air of nervousness among these students, say immigration agents.
There was a 40% decline in applications from India for Canadian study permits in the second half of 2023, according to one estimate. This was, in part, also due to the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada over allegations Indian agents were involved in the murder of Canadian Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
There are also hints of deeper cultural factors at play, for a waning Canadian dream among an older generation of Indian migrants.
Karan Aulakh, who spent nearly 15 years in Edmonton and achieved career and financial success, left his managerial job for a comfortable rural life in Khane ki Daab, the village where he was born in 1985. He told the BBC he was upset by LGBT-inclusive education policies in Canada and its 2018 decision to legalise recreational cannabis. Incompatibility with the Western way of life, a struggling healthcare system, and better economic prospects in India were, he said, key reasons why many older Canadian Indians are preparing to leave the country.
"I started an online consultancy - Back to the Motherland - a month and a half ago, to help those who want to reverse migrate. I get at least two to three calls every day, mostly from people in Canada who want to know what job opportunities there are in Punjab and how they can come back," said Mr Aulakh.
For a country that places such a high value on immigration, these trends are "concerning" and are "being received with a bit of a sting politically", says Daniel Bernhard of the Institute of Canadian Citizenship, an immigration advocacy group.
A liberalised immigration regime has been Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's signature policy to counter slowing economic growth and a rapidly aging population.
According to Canada's statistics agency, immigration accounted for 90% of Canada's labour force growth and 75% of population growth in 2021.
International students contribute to over C$20bn ($14.7bn; £11.7bn) to Canada's economy each year, a bulk of them Indians who now make up one in five recent immigrants to the country.
India was also Canada's leading source for immigration in 2022.
The numbers of those leaving are still small in absolute terms with immigration levels at all-time highs in Canada - the country welcomed nearly half a million new migrants each year over the past few years.
But the rate of reverse migration hit a two decade high in 2019, signalling that migrants were "losing confidence" in the country said Mr Bernhard.
Country specific statistics for such emigrants, or reverse migrants, are not available.
But official data obtained by Reuters shows between 80,000 and 90,000 immigrants left Canada in 2021 and 2022 and either went back to their countries, or onward elsewhere.
Some 42,000 people departed in the first half of 2023.
Fewer permanent residents are also going on to become Canadian citizens, according to census data cited by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship. In 2001, 75% of those eligible became citizens. Two decades later, it was 45%.
Canada needs to "restore the value of its citizenship," said Mr Bernhard.
It comes as Canada debates its aggressive immigration targets given country's struggle to absorb more people.
A recent report from National Bank of Canada economists cautioned that the population growth was putting pressure on its already tight housing supply and strained healthcare system.
Canada has seen a population surge - an increase of 1.2 million people in 2023 - driven mostly by newcomers.
The report argued that growth needed to be slowed to an annual increase of up to 500,000 people in order to preserve or increase the standard of living.
There appears to have been a tacit acceptance of this evaluation by policymakers.
Mr Trudeau's Liberal government recently introduced a cap on international student permits that would result in a temporary decrease of 35% in approved study visas.
It's a significant policy shift that some believe may end up further reducing Canada's appeal amid a wave of reverse migrations.

[ad_1] Morne Morkel at the PC ( Source RevSportz) First some hard numbers… As Australia posted 445 in their first innings at the Gabba, India’s bowling – Jasprit Bumrah aside – cut a sorry figure. Mohammed Siraj bowled 23.2 overs, gave away 97 runs and took two wickets. Akash Deep returned with 1/95 from 29.5 overs. Against Travis Head’s assault, the two fast bowlers, and also Ravindra Jadeja (0/95, 23 overs), looked clueless. At the end of the second day’s play, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel came for the press conference and claimed that the team had a plan against Head & Co. Unfortunately, it was not visible. He even spoke about how the seamers need to do better while operating with an older ball. “They (Head and Steve Smith) put on a partnership on the board there, put us under pressure with a softer ball,” Morkel told reporters. “So it’s definitely an area that we need to focus on. Maybe, deeper in the innings… In terms of game plans, yes we have got the game plans, but are we executing those game plans with a softer ball from both ends, that’s something we need to discuss and get better at.” It felt like passing the buck. Compare Morkel’s comment with Bharat Arun’s, who, along with Ravi Shastri, masterminded Australia’s downfall in the 2020-21 series. “Ravi called up and said ‘I want you to make a plan where you eliminate the off-side out of the Australians,” Arun, then India’s bowling coach, had said after the memorable series win Down Under. “He (Shastri) said we will attack straighter lines and have an on-side field so it is very difficult for batsmen to be consistently clearing the on-side fields. That really worked for us.” Steve Smith ended the series with an average of 44.71. David Warner’s average was 16.75. Marnus Labuschagne scored runs (average 53.25), but India hardly allowed him to make a decisive intervention. In the last Test, when the tourists breached the fortress Gabba, India’s bowling resources were down to Siraj, Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan, Navdeep Saini and Washington Sundar. But the callow group stood up to be counted, because they had a clear plan, and the vision of their bowling coach to fall back on. “Why would you appoint someone like Morkel as India’s bowling coach,” a Mumbai cricket old hand told this correspondent in a touch scornful way. “If he is that good, then how come no one in South Africa thought about appointing him?” Morkel had a very good Test career – 309 wickets at 27.66 from 86 matches. Coaching, however, is a different ball game altogether. Arun didn’t have a successful international career, but he is arguably India’s best-ever bowling coach. From Ishant Sharma to Ravichandran Ashwin and Siraj; players will attest to that. Morkel had a brief stint as Pakistan’s bowling coach, but his contract was terminated after the team’s group-stage exit from the 2024 ODI World Cup. He was Lucknow Super Giants’ bowling coach. Then again, white-ball cricket, where the bowlers have a four-over quota, is a different proposition. The Indian fast-bowling cupboard looks bare. Mohammed Shami is walking wounded. His career seems to have entered the twilight zone. Siraj is struggling to reach the next level. At the moment, Bumrah leads a one-man army. The younger fast bowlers, Harshit Rana for example, need someone to mother-hen them and make them ready for the longer format. Arun was brilliant at developing youngsters. Does Morkel have it in him? Maybe, there are better options available in India. Mastering the Basics for Defense Exam Preparation
Entering the defense forces is a dream for many aspiring young individuals in India. Serving the country in the Army, Navy, or Air Force not only provides a sense of pride but also offers a chance to build a fulfilling and honorable career. However, cracking the defense entrance exams, especially the NDA (National Defence Academy) exam, requires dedicated preparation, a strong grasp of fundamentals, and a structured approach. This article will focus on mastering the basics for defense exam preparation, with a special focus on the role of the NDA coaching institute in Dehradun at DNA Defence in shaping your success.
1. Know the Exam Pattern and Syllabus
Before diving into preparation, it is essential to understand the structure of the exam. The NDA exam consists of two main papers: Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT). The General Ability Test is further divided into sections like English, General Knowledge (which includes Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Geography, History, and Current Affairs).
Understanding the syllabus thoroughly is key to mastering the basics. Each subject has specific topics and weightage, so you should focus on covering the syllabus methodically. Break down the subjects and allocate sufficient time for each, starting with the most important topics.
Mathematics: Topics like Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Geometry form the foundation. Having a clear understanding of these concepts is vital as they build on each other.
General Ability Test: Cover English comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar, while General Knowledge requires a deeper understanding of current events, history, geography, and science.
Once you understand the exam structure and syllabus, you can devise a strategy to tackle each subject effectively.
2. Create a Study Plan for Consistency
A well-structured study plan is crucial for mastering the basics. Consistency is key in defense exam preparation, so having a plan that you can follow daily will keep you on track. Divide your time between different subjects based on the exam's weightage.
Time Management: Dedicate specific hours each day to Mathematics and General Knowledge, making sure to alternate between subjects to avoid burnout. Ideally, spend 3-4 hours a day on Mathematics and 2-3 hours on General Ability topics.
Daily and Weekly Goals: Set achievable daily and weekly study goals. For instance, if you're preparing for the NDA exam, aim to complete a certain number of chapters or solve a set number of problems each week. Revising what you’ve studied earlier is equally important.
By staying consistent and setting regular goals, you will be able to cover the syllabus methodically and stay ahead in your preparation.
3. Focus on Strengthening Your Core Concepts
Mastering the basics means focusing on building a strong foundation in all the subjects. For the Mathematics paper, practice is essential. Work on your problem-solving skills by solving as many problems as possible from different topics. Ensure you have a clear understanding of fundamental concepts like algebraic expressions, theorems, and geometric formulas.
Master Basic Formulas: Make sure you know all the basic formulas and concepts required for mathematics. For example, understanding algebraic identities, trigonometric ratios, and geometric properties is essential for faster problem-solving.
English and General Knowledge: For the General Ability Test, it’s important to focus on English grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary. Read newspapers and books on current affairs, history, and geography to build your general knowledge.
A strong grasp of the fundamentals will not only help you solve questions with ease but will also provide the confidence to tackle tougher questions during the exam.
4. Solve Previous Years’ Papers
One of the best ways to master the basics is by solving previous years' question papers. This helps you get a feel for the type of questions that are typically asked and allows you to practice time management. Solving past papers will help you identify patterns in the exam and give you a sense of what to expect.
Mock Tests: Regularly taking mock tests simulates the actual exam environment and helps you assess your preparation. Mock tests will allow you to evaluate your speed and accuracy, and identify areas where you need to improve.
Analyze Your Mistakes: After each mock test or previous year's paper, take the time to review your mistakes. This will ensure you don’t repeat them and allow you to learn from them.
This practice is invaluable in helping you get a realistic idea of your exam readiness.
5. Join an NDA Coaching Institute
While self-study is essential, joining a coaching institute can make a significant difference in your preparation. An NDA coaching institute in Dehradun at DNA Defence offers an environment of disciplined learning and expert guidance that is often difficult to achieve through self-study alone.
DNA Defence is known for its tailored approach to NDA preparation. Some of the advantages of joining this institute include:
Expert Faculty: The experienced faculty at DNA Defence provide in-depth knowledge of all the subjects, with a special focus on helping students master the basics. Their expertise and teaching methods ensure that you grasp fundamental concepts effectively.
Comprehensive Study Material: DNA Defence provides well-structured study material that covers the entire syllabus. The material is designed to help students build their foundation step by step.
Regular Mock Tests and Assessments: Regular mock tests and assessments help you evaluate your progress. The feedback you receive can help you work on your weaknesses and further strengthen your basics.
Personalized Attention: With smaller batches, DNA Defence ensures that each student gets personalized attention, allowing for more focused learning and doubt resolution.
Being part of a reputed NDA coaching institute like DNA Defence not only keeps you accountable but also provides the necessary motivation and discipline to master the basics and move forward in your preparation.
6. Stay Physically and Mentally Fit
Physical fitness plays a crucial role in the defense exam process, especially during the SSB interview and medical tests. Regular physical exercise, such as running, swimming, or strength training, will help you meet the fitness standards required.
Physical Training: Incorporating fitness into your daily routine helps improve stamina, strength, and overall health. Make sure you engage in regular physical activities to stay fit and prepare for the fitness tests.
Mental Fitness: Mental clarity is just as important as physical fitness. Incorporating relaxation techniques, meditation, and staying positive will help keep your mind sharp and reduce stress during your preparation.
7. Stay Motivated and Positive
The road to cracking the NDA exam and pursuing a defense career is long and challenging. Maintaining motivation and a positive attitude is key to overcoming obstacles along the way. Regular breaks, rewarding yourself for milestones achieved, and staying focused on your goal will help you stay motivated.
Remember, consistent effort over time will lead to success. Stay disciplined, trust the process, and keep pushing forward.
Conclusion
Mastering the basics for defense exam preparation is essential for clearing the NDA and other defense exams. By understanding the exam pattern, creating a study plan, focusing on core concepts, and practicing regularly, you will develop a strong foundation for success. Joining a reputed NDA coaching institute in Dehradun at DNA Defence will give you the necessary guidance and resources to further improve your preparation.

[ad_1] Debasis Sen with Virat Kohli and Kohli’s signed jersey for him from the BGT 2018 (PC: Debasis Sen) Indian cricket team will embark on a five-Test series against Australia, starting from November 22 at the Optus stadium in Perth. It is going to be a challenging couple of months for the Indian cricketers Down Under, as Pat Cummins & Co will come hard at the tourists, having lost the previous two Test series against the same opponents in their backyard. This will be the third Test series that I will be covering in Australia, previous two being in 2011-12 and 2018-19. Team Revsportz will be Down Under at full strength to cover the series which promises to be an entertaining one. Myself and my editor-in-chief Boria da (Boria Majumdar) were part of the last two Test series in Australia. Talking about my memories of covering Test series in Australia, it is a mixed feeling. From covering the 0-4 drubbing of MS Dhoni’s side in 2011-12 to witnessing the first-ever Test series win on Australian soil on that rainy day at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on January 7, 2019 was very special for me as a photojournalist. It was even more memorable as I was presented with the match shirt by the Indian captain Virat Kohli moments after the Test series win. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Debasis Sen with Virat Kohli (PC: Debasis Sen) The celebrations which started at the SCG dressing-room went on at the Indian team hotel, with Bharat Army members joining the team. A day after I had the opportunity to record an interview of both Kohli and then Indian team Head Coach Ravi Shastri for Star Sports, for whom I was covering the series as a freelancer. I have had the privilege of covering Test series in all Test-playing nations over the last two decades. But nothing can match the charm of covering a Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) or a Test match at Lord’s. I still remember the spell bowled by Aussie pace duo James Pattinson and Peter Siddle during the Boxing Day Test in 2011. Michael Clarke’s side clinched the opening game of the series, beating India by 122 runs on Day 4. What followed over the next one-and-a-half months was complete humiliation for the Indian team. The highlight of that series was the performance of then Australia captain Michael Clarke, who amassed 626 runs at an average of 125, including a brilliant 329 not out at his home ground, SCG. The series had its share of controversies as well. On the eve of the third Test at WACA, this correspondent captured the ground staff having a beer party on the uncovered match pitch. Pitch curator Cameron Sutherland claimed it was a traditional event for the ground staff which had occurred since he took over the job as curator. Michael Clark for Australia (PC: Debasis Sen) Clearly the 2011-12 series Down Under was not a memorable one for the travelling Indian media. Cut to the 2018-19 series, when the Kohli-led India clinched their maiden Test series triumph on Australian soil. India registered a 2-1 win in the series following the victories in Adelaide and Melbourne. The scoreline could have been 3-1, but for the persistent rain on the final day of the series which forced a washout. The home side was made to follow-on for the first time since 1988. The architects of the series victory were Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 521 runs, including 193 in Sydney, and Jasprit Bumrah, who took 21 wickets at 17. On the eve of the Test, both teams were hosted by then Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison at the Kirribilli House in Sydney. I share the fond memories of being the only representative from the travelling Indian media to capture the moments of Indian players interacting with the Australian PM. Finally, as I am all set to travel to cover my third Test series on the Australian soil, I would hope the Indian team puts up a spirited show, leaving behind the embarrassing series loss against New Zealand at home.
