You were walking through the woods, you normally took a walk once a week, just to get some fresh air and away from the stress of work. However, the entire walk made you feel like someone was watching you. However, it started to rain. You began to head towards your normal hideout from the rain.

You made it to a small cabin, one that was normally left abandoned, but it was there, and despite its run-down appearance, it was dry inside.

You walked inside, and you heard something that sounded like a thump, you decided to investigate the sound, and spotted a woman who looked to be in her late 20s, lying on a bed with sheets that looked bloody. Then a small boy appeared from behind the door, screaming

“B-BOO!! RAA- GO SHO!!

”The boy didn't look any older than four years old, he was trying to make himself look scary

“..are you ok?” *you peered down at the little boy, who when he realised his scaring method wasn't working, he ran towards the bed, trying to shake the woman awake, but she didn't react to the shaking

“Mama! Mama get up! Scary person.” he kept glancing around to see you standing in the door frame, he turned around and took a defensive stance, and you couldn't help but pity the boy.

“Is that your mum?.. Is she sleeping?” you felt like asking, only, she didn't look to be sleeping, she looked to be in a much dire state, a large patch of blood on her sheets

You tried to approach the boy and his mum, to try to check on them. “It's ok… You don't need to be scared, I'm just go-” You were cut off before you could continue to speak

“No. I'm not.”

His mother looked worse than sick, far worse

The little boy gently held his mother's hand, it was lying out from under the covers like he had been holding it a lot. You reached out towards the boy, gently checking his temperature, his skin was cold probably from being outside with no proper form of warmth or protection. He didn't pull away from the touch, he leaned into it, your hands were warm and he was freezing.

He realised what he was doing and pulled back “..kid you're freezing..”

The boy scratched his cheek “I'm.. I'm not a kid... I'm a big boy.. Mama said so..”

“Am not a kiddo..” the boy kept looking at his mother, he clearly didn't want to leave her… “will… will you promise we can see Mama later…” you nodded

“Yes, I promise, we will come to see Mama later... Come on, we can get you all cosy..”

You took your jacket off, wrapping it around the little boy as if it was a cape. You scooped up the little one who seemed to almost go limp as you carried him, he mumbled, seemingly trying to improve the mood “..you go blah blah blah.. A lot.. Did anyone tell you that before?.. It's all blah and blah and... Uh.. dunno.”

He was cute, you gently stroked his hair, trying to use your body heat to warm him up more. “What's your name?”

You laughed softly, gently stroking his hair, and lightly running a finger down the bridge of his nose before booping it

he growled softly at the boop.. “Don't..” he tried to seem annoyed by the affection, but it felt nice..

“Dont worry pup.. tons of people are scared of lightning and thunder-“

“Well-.. w-well I'm not. So shut up..”

You kept stroking his hair, if he was going to freak out you could at least try to make the freak out less like a tantrum and more like he just watched a sad movie

The silence filled the room quickly, the only sounds being your breathing and Arlo’s, one shaky with no regularity, and one calm..

There was a lightning strike, then thunder, and Arlo curled up against you, almost like he was trying to disappear.. you kept quiet..

“..p-please k-keep talkin’..”

He whined softly, he sounded terrified, and another lightning struck overhead

“The scientific term.. for brain freeze is sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia..” he seemed to pause at the strange fact

“Sp.. sp he-.. no… palatin.. gang.. lion… neu- what?..” he was too confused to be scared.

“Mhm.. and.. you can't hum if you hold your nose”

You watched as Arlo slowly pinched his nose and tried to hum, failing. There was another lightning strike, followed by thunder..

Arlo made a little squeak and curled up against you. “I-it too lo-loud..”

You gently covered Arlo’s ears, it was the least you could do to try to stop him from having a complete breakdown over the sound

You had learnt, over the last couple of weeks, that Arlo’s hearing was rather sensitive, and he also seemed constantly aware of all the sounds around him.

“Shhh…” it's not like he could currently hear you, but gently whispering “shh” seemed like the parental thing to do.

He kept hugging onto you as you stroked his hair, covering his ears in case of thunder..

“M-my room scary.. ca.. can I sleep here..” it was such a small request, and he already seemed so comfortable in your bed.. you could hardly deny such a small request..

“OK, pup.. you dont need to ask..” you gently kissed his forehead, tucking the blanket up around Arlo and themself

“Get some sleep pup.. we can get you a nightlight tomorrow.. and maybe some headphones..”

“..okay…” he probably wouldn’t remember anything, as he slowly drifted back to sleep in your arms
