The Titan Army demigods didn't know Luke . . . or each other!
I was going to give this the more provocative title “How Luke lied to the Titan Army,” because I’ve always felt that when demigods from the TA talk about their goals and motives, they don’t line up with Luke’s plans for world domination. But going back over the moments of every named TA demigod in the series, I noticed something else that might explain the disconnect. Most TA demigods were not in the TA at the same time. Their stories don’t overlap.
The fandom likes to think of the Titan Army as being this tight knit found family of misfits, and that’s a great headcanon; but the truth is, most of them didn’t know each other.
After Luke, the first TA demigod we see is Chris Rodriguez, who joined up at some point between TLT and SOMonsters. He was a son of Hermes, so he at least would have known Luke fairly well, but only him. After his first appearance, we don’t see him again until BTL, when he’s back at Camp Half-blood. He had been sent by Luke to try and scout out the Labyrinth; only to be driven mad, and pop out near Clarisse’s home in Arizona. But while we find out about this in BTL, we are told it happened “last summer,” which means it actually happened in the same summer as SOMo, probably just after Clarisse went home for the year. This means that Chris would have actually spent less than a year in the TA before dropping out of it, and he left before the other named demigods joined.
After Chris leaves, we actually have a gap of almost a year when there is no named demigod besides Luke in the TA, until Ethan joins. Ethan was at Camp “years ago,” before being claimed by Nemesis, and he stayed in Cabin 11, so he would have at least known Luke. But they don’t appear to have been close, because Luke made no effort to find him after leaving. His soldiers only come across Ethan by chance; and even though he’s ready and eager to join, Luke chooses to use him as a sacrifice to appease Antaeus. Ethan still shows the TA an amount of loyalty it didn’t show him, and swears his sword to Kronos. He is the last follower that the titan needed to meet whatever magical quota was necessary for him to perform his possession of Luke’s body. This means that after not seeing each other for years, Luke and Ethan would have interacted for two days at the most before Luke was lost. And Ethan would never have met Chris at all, unless it was years earlier at camp.
And now there’s Alabaster C. Torrington; who, like always, has to be the most extra one in the group. Because the thing about Al that is never stated in the text, but is pretty clear when you read between the lines, is that he never actually met Luke. At all. He would certainly have heard about him, but he apparently had no personal connection to him.
Alabaster and all his siblings joined the TA when their mother Hecate hitched her wagon to Kronos. And we know that happened at the end of BTL, when Dionysus shows up to camp and cheers everyone up with the news:
“The minor gods are changing sides. Morpheus has gone over to the enemy. Hecate, Janus, and Nemesis as well. Zues knows how many more.”
Of course, that would be after Kronos had possessed Luke, so Al never got a chance to meet him. And even though it’s never stated in SOMagic, it’s pretty clearly demonstrated. Alabaster does not mention Luke a single time. And when he explains the war to Claymore, he only talks about the events of TLO; because he didn’t join until the last year of the war.
(He also says that it was Percy who killed Kronos, and we never get an explanation for why he thinks that. Maybe that rumor would spread; but it wouldn’t last long, considering Percy himself would correct anyone who said it. But maybe Al thinks that the story about Luke is Olympian propaganda)
Quite a few of the TA demigods would have joined at that same time, following the lead of their parents, maybe even the majority of their eventual number. I wonder how much those new recruits were told about the TA’s operations before that, but I don’t think it was very much. Kronos wouldn’t want people to be missing Luke; and he definitely wouldn’t want them to know that Percy and friends had bested him so many times.
Finally, there is Silena. Now this might be a hot take, but I don’t think Silena should be considered part of the TA. She didn’t seem to connect with their cause, and probably never swore to Kronos. She only supported Luke himself; first out of misplaced feelings for him, and then because he was blackmailing her. Either way, it’s very unlikely that anyone from the TA other than Luke was contacting her. The others probably knew they had a spy in camp, but not who; it would have been very stupid even by Luke’s standards to let that secret out. You never know when another demigod might have second thoughts, and go the same way as Chris.
So, as much fun as it is to imagine the TA as a big found family, it would never have actually happened in canon. There might have been a strong friendship between Luke and Chris, and then maybe one between Alabaster and Ethan (though come to think of it, Al never mentions Ethan either). But sadly, those are the only relationships the TA would produce outside of fanfiction.

Empowering Veterans through the Arizona License Lookup Tool
The transition from military to civilian life brings forth a myriad of challenges for veterans, particularly when navigating the complexities of professional licensing in their post-service careers. Recognizing the unique hurdles these individuals face, the state of Arizona has launched a groundbreaking initiative — the Arizona License Lookup Tool for Veterans. This innovative online platform is a testament to Arizona’s commitment to supporting its veterans, acting as a crucial bridge that connects them with civilian professional opportunities.
Understanding the Veteran’s Transition
The journey of a veteran transitioning to civilian professional life is often laden with uncertainties and complexities. Veterans emerge from their service equipped with a wealth of skills and experiences. However, aligning these qualifications with civilian professional standards often requires navigating a labyrinth of licensure processes, each with its distinct set of rules and requirements. This journey can be overwhelming, as many veterans may not have prior experience or guidance in dealing with such bureaucratic intricacies.
The Vision Behind the Arizona License Lookup Tool
In addressing these challenges, the Arizona License Lookup Tool for Veterans was conceived as more than just a basic directory of professional licenses. It represents a targeted solution, carefully crafted to cater to the specific needs of veterans seeking professional certification in Arizona. This tool not only simplifies the navigation through the complexities of licensure but also serves as a token of recognition and appreciation for their service.
Crafting a User-Friendly Experience
A central aspect of the Arizona License Lookup Tool is its user-friendly interface. Designed with the specific needs and experiences of veterans in mind, the platform is intuitive and easy to navigate. This thoughtful design ensures that veterans of all ages and technical abilities can access and utilize the tool effectively, making their transition into civilian professions smoother and more manageable.
Comprehensive, Tailored Information
One of the tool’s standout features is its comprehensive repository of information. Each professional license in Arizona is detailed with its requirements, application procedures, fees, and examination specifics. This exhaustive approach ensures that veterans have access to all necessary information in one centralized location.
Moreover, the tool is uniquely tailored to veterans. It highlights special provisions such as fee waivers, credits for military experience, or expedited processes that are exclusively available to veteran applicants. This not only makes the tool a valuable informational resource but also a platform that acknowledges and values the unique experiences of veterans.
Beyond Licensing: A Resource Hub for Veterans
The vision for the Arizona License Lookup Tool extends beyond merely guiding veterans through the licensing process. It is conceived as a holistic resource hub, offering links to additional supports such as career counseling, resume-building services, and educational opportunities. This multifaceted approach underlines the tool’s role in not just facilitating professional licensing but also in fostering the overall professional development and well-being of Arizona’s veterans.
Understanding the Veteran’s Journey
Before delving into the specifics of the Arizona License Lookup Tool, it’s crucial to understand the journey of a veteran transitioning to civilian professional life. Veterans often find themselves at a crossroads, balancing the wealth of skills and experiences gained in the military with the requirements and nuances of civilian professional credentials. The path to obtaining appropriate licensure or certification can be daunting, filled with complex procedures, varied requirements, and sometimes, a lack of clear guidance.
The Vision of the Arizona License Lookup Tool
In response to these challenges, the Arizona License Lookup Tool for Veterans is designed to be more than a mere directory of professional licenses. It’s an innovative solution crafted to address the specific needs of veterans seeking professional certification in Arizona. This tool aims not only to guide them through the maze of licensure but also to acknowledge and value their service by offering tailored support.
Meeting the Needs of Arizona’s Veterans
The fundamental objective of this tool is twofold: to streamline the licensure process for veterans and to serve as a comprehensive resource. By integrating detailed, up-to-date information on various licensing requirements in Arizona with veteran-specific provisions and programs, the tool stands out as a beacon of support and guidance.
User-Friendly Design
At its core, the Arizona License Lookup Tool is about accessibility and ease of use. The interface is designed with the veteran in mind — intuitive, straightforward, and devoid of unnecessary complications. This consideration ensures that veterans can navigate the tool with ease, regardless of their tech-savviness.
Comprehensive and Tailored Information
The richness of this tool lies in its detailed presentation of information. Each professional license in Arizona comes with its own set of requirements, and the tool diligently encapsulates these details. From educational prerequisites to fees, testing information, and processing times — everything a veteran needs to know is available at their fingertips.
But the tool goes a step further. It highlights special provisions for veterans, such as fee waivers, credit for military experience, or expedited processing times. This feature not only makes the tool informative but also deeply empathetic to the veteran’s service and sacrifice.
A Resource Beyond Licensing
The Arizona License Lookup Tool is envisioned as more than just a gateway to professional licensure; it’s a resource hub. It offers links to additional support like career counseling, resume-building workshops, and educational opportunities. This holistic approach underlines the tool’s role in not just facilitating licensure but also in championing the overall professional growth of Arizona’s veterans.
In summary, the Arizona License Lookup Tool for Veterans is a pioneering initiative that reflects a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by veterans in transitioning to civilian life. By providing a user-friendly, comprehensive, and empathetic platform, the tool stands as a crucial resource in supporting veterans as they embark on new professional journeys in Arizona. As this tool gains traction, it promises to make a significant impact in the lives of those who have dedicated themselves to serving the country, now ready to contribute their skills and experiences in new, civilian capacities.

Relationship Experts' Favorite Valentine's Day Vacation Ideas
According to experts, not all amorous adventures are created equal. This is why Bronstein and McKinney put down their notepads and temporarily play travel agent, each selecting destinations and trip types for Valentine's Day getaways they believe will help couples strengthen their bond, increase passion, prepare them for married life, and hopefully keep them away from the office for a restorative experience. No matter where you go, McKinney warns couples to be aware of the common trap of putting too much emphasis on Valentine's Day—and to avoid falling into it. "Think of it as a time to enjoy one another rather than a time to celebrate something special." "She makes a suggestion. "It definitely makes things feel less stressful
A Shore Thing
A beach break is the "optimal, number one choice" for romantic Valentine's Day travel, according to Bronstein, with sunset strolls in the sand, cabana lounging, rooms with spectacular views, and maximum opportunities to wear minimal clothing. "There's something energizing about being in nature and near water. It's soothing. It's seductive. It can be full of rejuvenating and romantic activities like private dinners on the beach or long walks, or it can be full of experiences that make your heart race like swimming with sharks, both of which are bonding." Where to Go
Relationship Experts' Favorite Valentine's Day Vacation Ideas Barbados, the birthplace of Rihanna and rum, entices with its pristine beaches, endless sun, sapphire turtle-filled waters, breadfruit delicacies, and warm Bajan hospitality. Whether you come on a cruise or stay at a charming coast-hugging hotel like the pink-hued Cobblers Cove, bright days can be spent snorkeling, sailing, or surfing the wild and unpredictable Atlantic coast near Bathsheba's iconic rock formations. If you'd rather not get wet, try spelunking at Harrisons Cave or a tasting at Mount Gay, the world's oldest still-operating commercial rum distillery. Spend nights eating sushi on a submarine or dancing to pulsating soca beats at a club in St. Lawrence Gap after a fish fry at Oistins.
A Self-Care Sojourn
In Bronstein's opinion, a trip to a high-end spa is a close second to a trip to the beach. "What's not to like about these locations? "They include everything: scenery, food, self-care, connecting with your partner, unwinding, bonding," she extols. "Most readers are in the midst of wedding planning, which is extremely stressful. Spas can help you reset." Some spa activities and treatments, according to McKinney, are "intimacy building and can possibly enhance sensuality," and couples who spend time together at a wellness retreat may return with a useful souvenir. " may provide us with an opportunity to incorporate our partner into new coping strategies to manage stress at home." Where to Go
At resorts throughout the red-rock majesty of Sedona, Arizona, wellness meets woo-woo. You can't throw a crystal without hitting a meditation labyrinth, past-life regression practitioners, or sound bath installation. But one of the best places to unwind is at Mii amo and Enchantment Resort, two sister properties located across from each other in the heart of Boynton Canyon. True believers will swear that the supercharged geography of Boynton, which is bookended by powerful vortexes, improves services. Even detractors of interdimensional gateways can't deny the healing abilities of these hands, or the rejuvenating effects of cupping facials, aura photography, chakra balancing, a four-handed Ayurvedic massage, or manifesting with the new moon.
Peak Pilgrimage
Do you prefer snow to sand? No worries, because the same logic applies to alpine excursions. The mountains will work their magic whether you stay in a cabin in the woods, pitch a tent by a glacial lake, or hit the slopes at a big resort. "Anything involving being in nature, particularly green or quiet spaces that allow for a bit of a disconnect," McKinney says, is naturally grounding. "Seeing wildlife and stars, as well as planting your feet in the earth, are all calming." Where to Go
Relationship Experts' Favorite Valentine's Day Vacation Ideas The pine-scented playground of Lake Tahoe, a cobalt mass that unfolds across California and Nevada, offers four seasons of fun, but winter is truly this region's time to shine. Heavenly ski resorts are in full swing. Snow blankets meadows and hiking trails and sits atop Sand Harbor's signature rock formations, making them even more photogenic. Hearths roar to life, hot chocolate flows freely, and cold weather forces lovers into cuddle huddles. The Desolation Hotel, a brand new sustainably built micro-resort with a bubbly hot tub, deck heat lamps, fire pits, and a double-sided fireplace that can be enjoyed from the bedroom or the tub large enough for two on the balcony, makes it easy to warm up.
The Digital Detox
Building on the idea that spotty service can be a blessing in disguise, gadget-free getaways ranked high on both therapists' lists of suggestions. "This is a good litmus test to ensure you're marrying the right person," says Bronstein. "TVs and phones, the Internet, and social media divert our attention, disrupt communication, and divert us from spending quality time." "She elaborates. "They prevent people from being present and truly listening to their partners. When all of that noise is removed, you can truly be present, focus on each other, and grow your love. The more time you spend together, the stronger your relationship will become." Where to Go
Relationship Experts' Favorite Valentine's Day Vacation Ideas When Rancho La Puerta, a 4,000-acre wellness sanctuary just across the California border in Tecate, Mexico, was founded in 1940, gadgets were not an issue. However, in order to maintain the peaceful setting in the modern day and continue to push their core tenets of "real conversation and connections," they established some ground rules such as no cell use in public areas, at meals, or on your casita patio, as well as limiting browsing and scrolling to five hot spots. They'd rather you spend your time working out, going to a chamber concert, hiking up hills, meditating, getting a hot stone massage, or chatting with like-minded strangers.
A Classic Staycation
We understand: With high inflation, frequent flight delays and cancellations, and a shortage of hotel and restaurant staff, the juice isn't always worth the squeeze. Forcing yourself to travel when you lack the time, funds, or bandwidth needed to plan and thoroughly enjoy a large trip not only adds unnecessary stress, but it may also actively harm your partnership. "Be aware of optional versus mandatory stress, and remove optional stress when possible," McKinney advises. "Optional stress is anything that does not have to happen. Depending on your circumstances, travel could be that." The key to preventing travel stress from ruining your vacation is to look for something closer to home and see the "glass half-full," as Bronstein suggests. "The happiest couples can make anything fun, lemonade from lemons and all that. "The key is to be playful and creative in order to make it different from home," she says. "Get some new underwear. Attempt a new cuisine. And don't even bring up the same topics at dinner that you do at home. That way, even if you're just down the street from your house, it feels like you're on a special vacation." Where to Go You can certainly dress up your house for a special weekend at home, or you can book a nearby Airbnb or small rental. Otherwise, look for a local hotel with opulent or unusual amenities that aren't part of your daily routine, such as the roof-top pool and Himalayan salt room at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The W Philadelphia's Extreme Wow suite on the 49th floor includes a DJ booth, a gold-trimmed foosball table, and an electronic bed that spins 360 degrees. Some cabins at Castle Hot Springs in Arizona include telescopes and an outdoor tub. (And don't forget what they said about stargazing!) If the way to your heart is through your stomach, stay at a restaurant run by a top chef, such as the Thompson Denver (Michelin-starred Ludo Lefebvre's take on the Mile High City's namesake omelet is decadent and not to be missed) or the Line Austin (Top Chef season 10 winner Kristen Kish's culinary vision). McKinney also sees the value in revisiting an old favorite. "Return to places you've previously enjoyed together and that both of you enjoy to reinforce the positive memories associated with your partner and the location." Read the full article

Pairing: Vulture / Iron Man / Spider-man x Teen!Reader
Warnings: Illegal work.
Word count: 1829
A/N: Sorry it took so long! / Sorry for my spelling and grammatical mistakes, English is not my native language, I am learning.
Anything could happen in New York City. A place that never slept, that was always awake at all hours, where criminals and children went everywhere hand in hand. Everything was hidden, but also in plain sight, if you knew where to look. Its streets were a labyrinth, but they always led to a way out, everything had an end. Its neighbourhoods were small communities distributed by culture or social status, but that did not prevent them from relating to each other. A teenager raised in Queens might have different limitations than one raised in the Upper East Side, but it all depends on the person. What I mean is, you never know what your life is going to be like in New York City.
Your mind was in constant operation, even if you wanted it to, it never stopped, it never rested, in a millisecond the thought passed through it 'when was the last time I slept'. You were in a hangar near the Harlem docks, this lucrative activity occupied a large part of your free time after high school, taking up your weekends as well. You could call it 'extracurricular activity' or also 'gainful employment', or maybe a combination of both, after all you were improving your engineering skills and earning money for it.
You had been enrolled in that new business for more than five months, your expectations for the future had changed, now you weren't so sure if going to university was what you really wanted. You were not driven by the easy money, what you were doing was much more than that, it was money, knowledge and all the adrenaline possible to do something legally binding. All the talent that you thought would be wasted and that you had never been valued was now being used to do something else, to be someone in the world, even if it was in the hidden world.
You designed, created and crafted technologically advanced combat armour and weaponry, you built things you hardly thought you would be able to make. All you needed was the time and the facilities that Adrian Toomes had offered you. He discovered you, he had set his sights on you and trusted you, something that many other people had not done before. In your past years you dreamed of getting a position at MIT, but now it was no longer among your priorities, at least for the time being.
Adrian's discovery came about in the most natural way possible. You were attending Midtown School of Science and Technology, and one day during a chemistry class the teacher had the brilliant idea of paired assignments, so you were paired with Liz Toomes. Liz is a really intelligent young woman, the problem in question was the wide difference between your characters, your quiet countenance and your passivity for social relations caused discomfort among your classmates, but leaving that aside, you decided to go to her house to do the work. It was there that you met her father, Adrian, who found your project notebook when you dropped it on your way to Liz's room. He was clever, slipping in a note with his personal phone number expressing his interest in your projects. At first you were completely shy of the idea, but eventually you agreed, otherwise you wouldn't be in that situation.
The first project you did was an improvement to his exo-suit, he had been working on it for years, but for reasons you didn't know he didn't want to tell you who had helped him make it, he just told you that you had everything you needed at your disposal and that he wanted to see what you could be able to do, and so he did.
Since that day the small business you had in your hands had evolved, Toomes was in charge of the public-facing transactions, and you were hidden away carrying the full weight of engineering. But that didn't mean that when you went back out on the streets you became a normal teenager again.
On a Monday like any other Monday, New York City was glowing in the sunlight. On the drive to school we went over in a steady stream what we had studied for the maths exam you had in the fourth period, although it was really something you had passed a long time ago. You kept yourself hidden under a pair of headphones, listening for anything that would prevent you from interacting with people. Your day-to-day actions when you walked through that door were mechanical. You walked thirty-three steps down the main corridor, turned right, twenty-seven steps to your locker, entered code 5432, opened it and took your books, dropped off your lunch, closed it again and headed for your class, trying not to bump into anyone who crossed your path. That, day after day.
But that day, that second between songs, when your ears came back to the real world you heard a word "Vulture". Your senses quickly focused on the conversation that group of girls were having, you stopped the music and without looking at them you sharpened your hearing.
"My cousin just sent me the video," one of them said, showing her mobile phone to the others. "He was arrested tonight, on the Harlem waterfront. Isn't Spider-man cool?"
"Wow!" exclaims one.
"I can't believe the Vulture is Liz's dad," adds another girl. "By the way does anyone know anything about her?"
That conversation caused a pang inside you. You quickly, but as calmly as possible, closed your locker and headed in the opposite direction of the entire student body, heading back outside. You knew what this meant, your mind had explored various scenarios about the possible events that could happen if the FBI or anyone else discovered you. You knew what you had to do, how to do it and where to go, you had created a plan in your head. You didn't trust Adrian to take all the blame and you would come out of the situation unscathed, you were a minor and could always appeal to a corrupt situation, but that wasn't your style either.
Step by step you were fulfilling your plan, the first thing was to erase any traces that implicated you in those events, you had to go home and get rid of everything you had in your possession that implicated you, both physically and virtually, then it would be better for you to disappear for some time, you had plenty of money to do so and you knew that your family would not care too much where you were.
You went into the house, you had hours ahead of you until one of your parents returned. You went to your room and began to tidy up every gadget or item on your bed that connected you to the crime. It took you very little time compared to how long it took you to erase your fingerprints from the virtual world, it was obvious that you kept your figure hidden under a pseudonym, but every weapon or armour that the FBI had confiscated had your fingerprint on it, a fingerprint that could lead them to you.
The hours passed, you knew that sooner or later your parents were going to walk through the door, time was running out for you to catch a bus out of that city. You opted to pack up your things, leave that note and continue erasing data during the long trip to Arizona, but it was too late. A loud noise from the hallway alerted you that your time had come to an end.
"Ms. Y/L/N, you know what they say about sometimes you have to run before you walk?" Iron Man appeared before your eyes. "Too slow."
The armour that stood before you cut off your main passage to the exit, though you knew in your gut that there was little you could do against it without outside help. Slowly you reached inside your backpack and pulled out one of your unfinished projects, a laser that fired a powerful beam at the armour. That mere distraction allowed you to turn around and head inside your bedroom with the intention of climbing out of your window and down the fire escape, however as you were about to do so a body burst through the window, launching a slimy mass that stuck you to the wall of your room. In front of you Iron Man and Spider-man, both staring at you, and you feeling the most vulnerable being at that moment.
"Wow!" Spider-Man picked up the laser from the floor. "This is cool! What kind of energy does it work with?"
"Hey kid! Put that down," his ally informed him. "Okay, do you know why we're here?" he asked waiting for an answer that never came. "Not very talkative, I understand, I was going to explain it to you anyway, do you know Adrian Toomes? I guess so, at least he knows you, he gave your name." your face hardened. "Yeah, well, I wouldn't be that surprised."
You remained impassive, listening to his every word and trying to form a plan in your head that would help you escape the situation.
"Listen, I have no intention of selling you out to the police," suddenly the Iron Man suit vanished, revealing the figure of Tony Stark before your eyes. "I admire you, I really do, well I don't mean I admire that you joined a group of criminals and created technologically enhanced weapons and sold them, but I admire your skills.
"Isn't that what you've done?" you finally interjected, responding to her retorts.
"Oh! She speaks!" he pointed at you, looking at Spider-man. "Good point. But to the point, you decide, you either come with us and decide to join the good side, or we leave you here for your parents to find you, explain everything that's happened and then to the police. You decide. The clock is ticking."
Your mind was reactivated again, it was clear that there were two options and only one of them was within your prospects. It might take you a while to forgive yourself for what you were going to do next, but it was your only way out. You nodded slowly and clenched your jaw tightly as you surrendered to those in front of you.
"Good choice," Tony said with a nod as Spider-man released you from those webs that had invaded your body.
From down the hall you heard the front door open and two people walked in, engaged in conversation, your parents. Your eyes widened exponentially.
"Just in time," Tony said. "See you later, kid. And you and I," he looked at you, "are going to explain to your parents about the September Foundation Grant."

Rise Up Chapter 2: We Fight Demon Scorpions
Pairing: Stiles Stilinski x OC (eventually)
Warnings: Angst, weapons, betrayal

The next morning, the buzz at breakfast faded into the background as I attempted to wake up. I never really managed to fall back asleep after my nightmare.
A nudge against my shoulder made me jump, and I turned to see Silena sending me a worried look. “You okay?” She asked.
I nodded. “Yeah,” I said. I zoned back into the breakfast announcements. Apparently at around three this morning, an Aethiopian drakon had been spotted at the borders at camp. I was so distracted by my nightmare and tossing and turning that I hadn’t even noticed. The magical boundaries kept the monster out, but it stalked along the border, looking for weak spots in our defenses. It didn’t go away until Lee Fletcher, the Apollo cabin’s head counselor, led his siblings in pursuit. After shooting a few dozen arrows into its armor, it finally got the message and left.
“It’s still out there,” Lee was warning us. “Twenty arrows in its hide, and we just made it mad. The thing was thirty feet long and bright green. Its eyes-” He cut himself off, shuddering.
“You did well Lee,” Chiron said, patting him on the shoulder. “Everyone stay alert, but stay calm. This has happened before.”
“Aye,” Quintus said from his seat at the head table. “And it will happen again. More and more frequently.”
Wow, how helpful.
The campers murmured amongst themselves.
Everyone knew that Luke was planning an invasion into camp. Most of us expected it to happen this summer, but no one knew how or when. Our attendance was down, and that definitely didn’t help. When I started about four years ago, there had been over one hundred. Now there were only a little over eighty. Some had died. Some had joined Luke. Some had straight up disappeared.
“This is a good reason for new war games,” Quintus said. I didn’t love the glint in his eyes. “We’ll see how you all do with that tonight.”
“Yes…” Chiron said. “Well, enough announcements. “Let us bless this meal and eat.” He raised his goblet. “To the gods!”
We all raised our glasses and repeated the blessing.
I grabbed my plate, stood, and led my siblings to the brazier. “Aphrodite,” I whispered, tossing a hash brown into the fire. Mitchell showed Lacy what to do as I prayed to my mother. “Help me with Luke, and Grover, and protecting Amara…”
There was so much to list that I could have gone on all morning, but I headed back to my seat.
After a few minutes, I noticed that Grover was eating with Percy. Suddenly, my fork was halfway to my mouth when I felt somebody lift me by my shirt and take me to the Poseidon table. She plopped me down next to Grover and I swallowed my breakfast while Annabeth slid into the bench next to Percy.
“I’ll tell you what it’s about,” Annabeth said. “The Labyrinth.”
“Oh, okay, so we’re talking about this now,” I realized.
“You’re not supposed to be here,” Percy told Annabeth. Campers weren’t allowed to switch tables. I wasn’t sure what the punishment was for switching, because it’s never happened. If Mr. D had been here, Annabeth and I would have been in big trouble, but he wasn’t here. Chiron apparently had already left. Quintus was still sitting at the head table, but didn’t say anything.
“We need to talk,” Annabeth insisted.
“But the rules-”
“Look, Grover is in trouble,” Annabeth interrupted. “There’s only way we can figure to help him. It’s the Labyrinth. That’s what Clarisse, Zia, and I have been investigating.”
“The Labyrinth isn’t in Crete anymore,” I continued. “Like a lot of ancient Greece myth stuff, it’s moved to America. Or, in this case, under America.”
“So… is the Labyrinth part of the Underworld?” Percy asked.
I shook my head. “No.”
“Well, there may be passages from the Labyrinth down into the Underworld,” Annabeth corrected. “I’m not sure. But the Underworld is way, way down. The Labyrinth is right under the surface of the mortal world, kind of like a second skin. It’s been growing for thousands of years, lacing its way under Western cities, connecting everything together underground. You can get anywhere through the Labyrinth.”
“If you don’t get lost,” Grover grumbled helpfully. “And die a horrible death.”
“There has to be a way,” I told him. Again. We’ve had this conversation more than a few times over the past few months. “Clarisse made it out.”
“Barely!” He countered. “And the other guy-”
“He was driven insane,” Annabeth interrupted. “He didn’t die.”
“Oh, joy,” Grover said sarcastically. “That makes me feel much better.”
“Whoa,” Percy said. “Back up. What’s this about Clarisse and a crazy guy?”
I glanced over at the Ares table. Clarisse eyed us like she knew what we were talking about, but as soon as we made eye contact, she quickly focused on her plate.
I lowered my voice as I turned back to Percy. “Last winter,” I started, “Clarisse went on a mission for Chiron.”
“I remember,” he said. “It was secret.”
I nodded. “It was a secret because she found Chris Rodriguez.”
“The guy from the Hermes cabin?”
Chris was a son of Hermes who had come to camp before I had. He was about a year older than I was, and used to be friends with Nisha and I, until he left camp soon after Luke did. Last summer, Percy, Annabeth, Tyson, and I had found him on Luke’s war/cruise ship, the Princess Andromeda.
“Yeah,” Annabeth confirmed. “Last summer he just appeared in Phoenix, Arizona, near Clarisse’s mom’s house.”
“What do you mean he just appeared?” Percy asked.
“A few weeks after we got back from our quest,” I said, “Chris was found wandering around in the desert, in a hundred and twenty degrees, in full Greek armor, ranting about string.”
“String,” Percy said.
“He’d been driven completely insane,” Annabeth said. “Clarisse brought him back to her mom’s house so the mortals wouldn’t institutionalize him. She tried to nurse him back to health.”
“Chiron even came out and questioned him,” I added. “But it didn’t do much good. The only thing we were able to figure out is that Luke’s men have been exploring the Labyrinth.”
“Okay,” Percy said, trying to take all of this in. “Why were they exploring the Labyrinth?”
“We weren’t sure,” I said. “That’s why Clarisse went scouting. Chiron kept things quiet because he didn’t want to start a panic. The only reason he involved me was because… well, it’s Luke.”
“And he involved me because the Labyrinth has always been one of my favorite subjects,” Annabeth said. “The architecture involved…” Her expression turned a little dreamy. “The builder, Daedalus, was a genius. But the point is, the Labyrinth has entrances everywhere. If Luke could figure out how to navigate it, he could move his army around with incredible speed.”
“Except it’s a maze, right?” Percy asked.
“Full of horrible traps,” Grover added. “Dead ends. Illusions. Psychotic goat-killing monsters.”
“But not if you had Ariadne’s string,” Annabeth countered. “In the old days, Ariadne’s string guided Theseus out of the maze. It was a navigation instrument of some kind, invented by Daedalus. And Chris Rodriguez was mumbling about string.”
“So Luke is trying to find Ariadne’s string,” Percy said. “Why? What’s he planning?”
“I wish I knew,” I answered. “At first, we thought he wanted to use the maze to invade camp, but that wouldn’t make sense. The closest entrances Clarisse found were in Manhattan, so Luke wouldn’t be anywhere near our borders, let alone be able to get past them. Clarisse explored a little ways into the Labyrinth, but it was really dangerous. She had some close calls. Annabeth and I researched everything we could about Daedalus, but it didn’t help much. We can’t figure out what Luke is planning, but we know that the Labyrinth might be the solution to Grover’s problem.”
Percy blinked in confusion. “You think Pan is underground?”
“It would explain why he’s been impossible to find,” Annabeth said.
Grover shuddered. “Satyrs hate going underground. No searcher would ever try going in that place. No flowers. No sunshine. No coffee shops!”
“But,” Annabeth said, “the Labyrinth can lead you anywhere. It reads your thoughts. It was designed to fool you, to trick you and kill you-”
“- But if you can make the Labyrinth work for you-” I continued.
“It could lead you to the Wild god,” Percy finished.
“I can’t do it,” Grover insisted, clutching his stomach. “Just thinking about it makes me want to throw up my silverware.”
“Grover, it may be your last chance,” Annabeth said. “The council is serious. One week or you learn to tap dance!”
A throat clearing gained our attention, and my head swiveled to the head table, where Quintus was staring pointedly at us. I had a feeling he didn’t want to make a scene, but Annabeth and I were pushing it by staying at the Poseidon table for this long.
“We’ll talk later,” Annabeth said. She squeezed Percy’s arm. “Convince him, will you?”
Annabeth got up and went back to her table.
“It’s going to be okay, Grover,” I tried to reassure him. “We’ll figure it out.”
He just stared dejectedly at the table. I stood up and returned to my breakfast with Cabin Ten.
____________
That night after dinner, Quintus had us put on armor like we were going to play capture the flag, but the camp’s mood seemed more serious than that. At some point today, the crates from the arena had disappeared, and I had a bad feeling that whatever was in them was now running around in the woods.
Quintus stood up at the head table. “Right,” he said. “Gather ‘round.”
I found Ethan in the crowd and went to stand between him and Silena.
He was dressed in black leather and bronze. Mrs. O’Leary bounced around him happily, looking for food scraps to eat, then came right up to me.
I grinned, scratching behind her ears.
“You will be in teams of two,” Quintus announced. Immediately, everyone started moving around to get to their friends, he shouted, “Which have already been chosen.”
Everyone groaned.
“Your goal is simple,” Quintus continued. “Collect the gold laurels without dying. The wreath is wrapped in a silk package, tied to the back of one of the monsters. There are six monsters. Each has a silk package. Only one holds the laurels. You must find the wreath before the other teams. And, of course… you will have to slay the monster to get it, and stay alive.”
The crowd muttered excitedly.
“Lot more exciting than capture the flag,” Ethan grinned.
“Tell me about it,” I agreed. The goal seemed simple. Most of us had killed monsters before- that’s what we trained for.
“I will now announce your partners,” Quintus said. “There will be no trading. No switching. No complaining.”
“Arooof!” Mrs. O’Leary howled. She moved from my side to bury her face in a plate of leftover pizza.
Quintus took out a scroll and started reading off names.
Silena was paired up with Beckendorf, and she couldn’t hide her smile. I nudged her shoulder with mine, smirking. She shoved me playfully, both of us grinning. See, Silena had a crush on Beckendorf that neither of them would do anything about, and hoped they would soon, because it was super annoying how they wouldn’t tell each other how they felt.
Travis and Connor Stoll were paired up, which wasn’t a surprise. They did everything together. Clarisse was with Lee Fletcher. Percy and Annabeth were together. Grover and Tyson were paired together, which neither looked very happy about.
Then my name was called. “Ghaziyah Banerjee and Ethan Nakamura!” Ethan and I grinned at each other, and high fived.
“They don’t want to give anyone a fighting chance?” Ethan joked. Both of us were great sword fighters, and always rocked capture the flag when Aphrodite and Hermes were allied. I couldn’t wait to see how this would turn out.
____________
The actual game itself wasn’t important. Ethan and I almost beat Clarisse and Travis, but Grover and Tyson had a little issue. In order to make sure they didn’t accidentally kill each other, we missed the box with the laurel that would have made us win.
Luckily, Ethan wasn’t mad.
As I started taking off my armor, Ethan shuffled around nervously. “You okay?” I asked, undoing the straps of my breastplate.
“Yeah, I just-” He stopped. “I need to talk to you.”
I furrowed my brows. “About what?”
Ethan took a deep breath, then said all at once, “I wanted to leave camp.”
My eyes widened in surprise. “You-”
“I wanted to leave,” Ethan continued, “and join Luke’s army. But I don’t anymore.”
My mind was reeling. “You wanted to leave?” I asked, unable to keep the hurt and confusion out of my voice.
Ethan nodded, looking ashamed. “I did. I have a lot of anger toward the gods- you know that. And when I met Luke, so did he. The gods don’t pay enough attention to their kids, and he was really the only one doing something about it. But I realize… that he isn’t going about it the right way. I’ve decided to stay.”
“You have?” I asked, my hopes raising slightly.
“Yeah. I just- you’re my best friend in the world,” he said. “You’re the only one who actually accepts that my mother is Nemesis. You’re basically my little sister. The last thing I want is to mess that up.”
I processed everything Ethan just said, finally whispering, “So… you’re staying?”
Ethan nodded, beginning to smile. “Yeah. Yeah, I’m staying.”
I grinned, squealing happily, and gave my best friend a bear hug, causing him to laugh.
“Hate to break up the fun,” a voice called, causing me to pull back. I turned to see Clarisse. “But we have a problem.”
I tensed, placing my hand on my sword. “What’s wrong?”
“Percy and Annabeth are missing.”
I would love to say I didn’t freak out.
Truthfully, I just about had a heart attack.
The whole camp, including Chiron, searched the entire woods.
After about an hour, I was on the verge of a panic attack when we heard shouts that they had been found.
Ethan and I followed the voices to Zeus’ Fist.
“Thank the gods!” I exclaimed, launching myself into Annabeth’s arms, causing her to stumble back from the force. Before she could react, I pulled away and hugged Percy tight. “Where were you two?”
“We’ve been looking forever,” Clarisse added as I pulled away, examining my friends for injuries.
“But we were only gone a few minutes,” Percy protested, confused at my outburst.
“Only a few minutes?” I repeated. “What, did you time travel?”
Chiron trotted up, followed by Grover and Tyson.
“Percy!” Tyson cried. “You are okay?”
“We’re fine,” Percy said. “We fell in a hole.”
We stared at him, confused, then looked at Annabeth.
“Honest!” Percy insisted. “There were three scorpions after us, so we ran and hid in the rocks. But we were only gone a minute.”
“You’ve been missing for almost an hour,” Chiron said. “The game is over.”
“Yeah,” Grover mumbled. “We would’ve won, but a Cyclops sat on me.”
“Was an accident!” Tyson protested, then sneezed.
I would have laughed if I wasn’t so confused.
“A hole?” Clarisse asked suspiciously.
Annabeth turned to our mentor. “Chiron, maybe we should talk about this at the Big House.”
Suddenly, it clicked, and I looked at Clarisse, who seemed to have come to the same conclusion. “Oh, my gods,” I said in amazement, my eyes widening. “You found it, didn’t you?”
Annabeth bit her lip. “I- Yeah. Yeah, we did.”
About fifty campers started asking questions at once, but Chiron raised his hand, quieting everyone. “Tonight is not the right time, and this is not the right place.” He eyes the boulders like he just noticed something wrong with them. “All of you, back to your cabins. Get some sleep. A game well played, but curfew is past!”
There was a lot of complaining, but the campers made their way back to the cabins.
“This explains a lot,” Clarisse said. “It explains what Luke is after.”
“Wait a second,” Percy said. “What do you mean? What did we find?”
Annabeth turned to Percy, worry clear on her face. “An entrance to the Labyrinth. An invasion route straight into the heart of camp.”
After that, Clarisse, Percy, and Clarisse headed back to their cabins, and I followed. It was difficult wrangling a bunch of eleven- to sixteen-year-olds together for bedtime. And I thought living with a one-year-old was difficult.
I turned toward the cabins, and I noticed Ethan was still there, a little ways away. He looked like he heard everything, but I wasn’t too worried. I smiled, pretending nothing was wrong.
“Come on, let’s head back,” I said happily.
He nodded, but didn’t say anything.
I couldn’t read his expression, and it made me nervous.
We stopped as we reached our cabins. “Good night, Ethan,” I said quietly.
“‘Night, Zia,” he responded, and we went our separate ways.

Elisa felt herself relax more and more as the elevator rose, bringing her closer to the castle and the clan. It had been a while since she had had the time to properly meet them. It was far from ideal, especially with her mating ceremony with Goliath just a little over 8 months ago, but she had promised her parents she would accompany them and Beth to Arizona. After her return, she’d had to take the day shift since too many colleagues were down sick or on holiday. As it was summer, that left her little time after sunset to spend with Goliath before she had to get some sleep.
But that was over with now. It was the weekend now and she had two days off and next week she would be back on the night shift. So she had decided to use the opportunity to properly visit the clan instead of Goliath just stopping by briefly at her apartment before his patrol.
She stepped off the elevator when it reached the castle and made her way towards the courtyard. She had a few minutes yet until the woke up.
She paused in front of an open door when she noticed a flash of light and movement inside, smiling slightly when she saw Puck and Alex with Fox sitting to the side, watching and listening.
The 4-year-old waved when he noticed her, grinning broadly. “Hi.”
“Hello Alex. Working hard, are you?”
“Uh hu.” He nodded proudly, making her fight back a grin of her own.
She took a startled step back when Puck was suddenly floating in front of her. “Well, well, been seeing one of my cousins again, have you?”
She stared at him, trying to figure out if he was being serious. “I don’t know what you mean. I haven’t seen any other Fay since the Unseelie War.” She did not like the way his smile vanished at her words and he floated down until they were face to face.
“Then you did without noticing because someone used magic on you.” He looked to Alex over his shoulder. “We’ll have to push back the practical lesson.”
“What did they do?”
“You are currently pregnant. With a half-gargoyle child.”
~*~
“What exactly does this mean?” Elisa asked. Fox had sent her husband to bring them inside directly after they woke up where they had then been told the news. “I mean, from what I understood we are not normally genetically compatible.”
“Not normally, yes,” Owen confirmed, having transformed back. “Someone used magic to make you compatible.”
“How is that supposed to work? From what I understood, it’s very different between humans and gargoyles.” Not least because gargoyles laid eggs the babies developed in for 10 years. What would that mean for her when it came to giving birth?
“I do not know,” Owen replied. “I was not the one to cast the spell, so I do not know the details.”
“Could Alex have?” Lexington asked. He remembered too well how, a few years ago, Alex had turned him, his brothers and Angela human for a day after overhearing them wishing to be.
“No. He does not have the necessary understanding about reproduction to know what to affect.” Owen turned back to Elisa. “Has your father, mother or brother mentioned wishing you could have children three to four months ago?”
“What?”
“You are currently around 12 weeks. The spell must have been cast before. Knowing who wished for it might tell us who cast it.”
“My father mentioned wanting grandchildren when we were planning our trip to Arizona.”
“Then it was likely Coyote, considering his connection to your father. We will have to ask him for the details of his spell.”
“How do we do that?” Lexington asked. “Go to Avalon?”
“I think there is a spell or two to summon him in the books mother gave me,” Angela said.
“You will have to use the one to request his presence. Oberon’s Mirror is on Avalon and Titania’s was... lost.” Demona had destroyed it in her fury when she had realized that he had turned her into a human during the day. “If you use a few drops of my blood, we can be sure that he will not ignore the summons.”
~*~
Elisa was relieved to learn that Angela had all she needed in the tower she had received the keys for for her mating ceremony or it was something she could just grab. She wanted answers before she could even consider dealing with their news.
Angela had barely finished the spell when Coyote appeared. It was still strange to Elisa that he looked like her father had done as a young man. He looked around, smiling slightly when he saw Owen, then brightened even more when he saw her. “Elisa! How are you?”
“Pregnant. Thanks to your spell.”
Coyote glanced at her abdomen. “So quickly?”
“Did you tell her or her father about the spell?” Owen interrupted before she could do more than bristle.
Coyote shrugged. “Peter said he wants grandchildren. And they would not have been able to have children without help.”
“Did you tell him?”
Coyote didn’t reply, instead he avoided looking at any of them.
“What exactly did the spell you cast include?” Owen seemed to have decided to move on instead of insisting that Coyote answer the previous question. “For the child’s development and the birth?”
Elisa did not like the blank look Coyote was now sporting. “The... birth?” he repeated slowly.
Owen briefly closed his eyes. “You should have talked to Anansi at least, never mind Detective Maza. Anansi has spent time in a female body enough they might have thought about it.”
“What does that mean for Elisa?” Goliath asked. He wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer as if to try and shield her.
“We don’t know.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
Owen shook his head. “Neither Coyote nor I are familiar with pregnancies, never mind a half-human, half-gargoyles pregnancy. Anything we say would be speculation and guesswork.”
“Who can help then?” Elisa asked. “Doctor Goldblum?” He worked in the Labyrinth with the mutants and clones, so he might be familiar enough.
“He can be involved if you prefer. Doctor Moss should be more of assistance.”
Fox turned to stare at Owen. “Raylee Moss? My gynaecologist?”
Owen inclined his head. “Moss is a halfling with connection to New Olympus.”
Elisa did not really listen as they started planning who to contact and when. Her hand slowly crept to her belly. A baby. Hers and Goliath’s.

My 5-Star Review
I was excited to take part in this tour because I’d been wanting to read Joanna’s debut, Beneath the Haunting Sea, so I took this opportunity to read it and Beyond the Shadowed Earth back-to-back. I will say, I don’t think you strictly have to read both of them, or even read them in order of release. Each story stands on its own, to be sure. I’m glad I read them the way I did, but please know it’s not necessary. If you like one, though, I’m pretty sure you’ll like the other! They’re interesting companion books because they exist in the same world, have the same mythology, and are absolutely related, but the characters are so different and their story arcs are quite different. I really enjoyed that aspect of reading these two books.
The mythology that Joanna creates for this world is just fascinating, so full-bodied and well-thought-out. I love that in both books we get full mythology storytelling that helps round out and illuminate the world for us. I’m a huge fan of epic fantasies that have entire worlds and histories underpinning the stories, and I feel that Beyond the Shadowed Earth easily falls into this category. Learning about the gods and goddesses of this world was really fun, and in Beyond the Shadowed Earth we delve into the lives and stories of different ones than we encountered in Beneath the Haunting Sea. I just really admire any author that creates an in-depth world that exists behind the story they are telling.
As for characters, we encountered Eda briefly in Beneath the Haunting Sea, and it was she who started Talia on her journey in that first book, but here in Beyond the Shadowed Earth she is our main character. Talia was such a sweet, innocent, good-hearted character that I was concerned I wouldn’t be as interested in reading about Eda, but I actually ended up liking her story even better (even though there was no Wen!). I guess I like complex characters, where you’re not really sure you like them, then you find yourself rooting for them or taking pity on them, and then you question yourself for doing so. I went through all of that with Eda! I made a note fairly early on (p. 43) that said, “I both hate and love her...”, and that’s basically how the rest of my reading experience was. I have to say I admire an author who can make me feel that about a character! On balance I was definitely on Eda’s side the more I read, and she has quite the story arc throughout her journey. She has a lot to learn, and she has immense growth.
Overall, I really enjoyed Beyond the Shadowed Earth (as well as Beneath the Haunting Sea), and I would be happy to return to the world of Endahr anytime in the future. I have no idea if that’s in the cards, but I think the world is so rich that there are so many stories that could be told. (Note to Ms. Joanna: I’d love to read more about Liahstorion, and/or about the fledgling democracy in Enduena!) If you enjoy rich fantasy worlds, great mythology, the hero(ine)’s journey, and the like, you can’t go wrong with these companion novels from Joanna Ruth Meyer. If you pick this up, I’d love to know your thoughts on Eda, and if you end up hating her or loving her (as I did)!
Rating: 5 fantastical stars!

Happy 100th Birthday Grand Canyon!
You cannot see the Grand Canyon in one view, as if it were a changeless spectacle from which a curtain might be lifted, but to see it, you have to toil from month to month through its labyrinths.
- John Wesley Powell
Happy 100th birthday Grand Canyon! The national park opened to the public on February 26, 1919 and centennial events will be ongoing throughout this year.
One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, “Grand Canyon welcomes approximately six million domestic and international visitors each year. After 100 years, whether it’s hiking a corridor trail, taking a stroll on the rim or enjoying the landscape from an overlook, Grand Canyon continues to provide a space for all visitors to connect with the outdoors.” (NPS.gov)
To honor the centennial, we are featuring the following natural history titles that continue to educate and inspire readers of all ages:
THE EXPLORATION OF THE COLORADO RIVER AND ITS CANYONS by John Wesley Powell; Introduction by Wallace Stegner
The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons, recently ranked number four on Adventure magazine’s list of top 100 classics, is legendary pioneer John Wesley Powell’s first-person account of his crew’s unprecedented odyssey along the Green and Colorado Rivers and through the Grand Canyon. A bold foray into the heart of the American West’s final frontier, the expedition was achieved without benefit of modern river-running equipment, supplies, or a firm sense of the region’s perilous topography and the attitudes of the native inhabitants towards whites.
THE PROMISE OF THE GRAND CANYON: JOHN WESLEY POWELL'S PERILOUS JOURNEY AND HIS VISION FOR THE AMERICAN WEST by John F. Ross
With The Promise of the Grand Canyon, John Ross recreates Powell’s expedition in all its glory and terror, but his second (unheralded) career as a scientist, bureaucrat, and land-management pioneer concerns us today. Powell was the first to ask: how should the development of the west be shaped? How much could the land support? What was the role of the government and private industry in all of this? He began a national conversation about sustainable development when most everyone else still looked upon land as an inexhaustible resource. Though he supported irrigation and dams, his prescient warnings forecast the 1930s dustbowl and the growing water scarcities of today. Practical, yet visionary, Powell didn’t have all the answers, but was first to ask the right questions.
RUNNING DRY: A JOURNEY FROM SOURCE TO SEA DOWN THE COLORADO RIVER by Jonathan Waterman (National Geographic)
In 1869, John Wesley Powell led a small party down the Green and Colorado Rivers in a bold attempt to explore the Grand Canyon for the first time. After their monumental expedition, they told of raging rapids, constant danger, and breathtaking natural beauty of the American landscape at its most pristine. In Running Dry, Jon Waterman combines sheer adventure and environmental calamity in this trailblazing cautionary account of his 2008 trip down the overtaxed, drying Colorado. As he follows Powell afloat and afoot, Waterman reaches out both to adventure travelers and to scientists, conservationists, environmentalists, and anyone interested in the fragile interplay between nature and humans.

Over 100 Full-Color Photographs, plus Detailed Maps, and Firsthand Information
Grand Canyon Country explores the spectacular 277-mile-long gash in Arizona’s red-rock country—noted by Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 as "the most impressive piece of scenery I have ever looked at"—and much more. Along with the geological marvels, amazing views along the popular South Rim, and higher, cooler North Rim, the book probes ancient Indian cultures, remote forests of the Kaibab Plateau, lonely reaches of the Arizona strip, and the multihued landscapes of the Painted Desert. All the wonders of the Grand Canyon are captured in this first-person narrative—from the awe-inspiring sunsets to hikes on treacherous trails to an exciting trip down the Colorado.
HOW THE CANYON BECAME GRAND: A SHORT HISTORY by Stephen J. Pyne
Dismissed by the first Spanish explorers as a wasteland, the Grand Canyon lay virtually unnoticed for three centuries until nineteenth- century America rediscovered it and seized it as a national emblem. Acclaimed historian Stephen Pyne examines the major shifts in Western attitudes toward nature, and recounts the achievements of explorers, geologists, artists, and writers, from John Wesley Powell to Wallace Stegner, and how they transformed the Canyon into a fixture of national identity.
THE MAN WHO WALKED THROUGH TIME: THE STORY OF THE FIRST TRIP AFOOT THROUGH THE GRAND CANYON by Colin Fletcher
The remarkable classic of nature writing by the first man ever to have walked the entire length of the Grand Canyon.

Morning on the Mesa in AZ. 🌵🌅🔮
Flew to AZ for my first Annual Gathering with The Labyrinth Society. Had a wonderful time with my son as a companion. Took him with me as a combination birthday/h.s. graduation gift ~ a chance to see a region of the US he's never been to.
I'm so grateful for the chance to meet in person person I've only gotten to know online these past few years, & it's been a time or re-centering and renewal.
You are invited to learn more about my time on the path in Arizona by connecting with me here:

Walking a labyrinth is not a maze; it is walking meditation that has been practiced for over 3500 years. Walking one is a brain activity that connects us deeper into our journey and offers up insights that make our journeys richer with deeper understanding. . . . #labyrinth #labyrinths #dromenon #walking #walkingthelabyrinth #journey #insights #understanding #spirit #spiritualjourney #spiritualawakening #wegotthis #roadtrip #jeep #jeepwrangler #turquoise #turquoisejeep #letsgo #mimiparisphotography #apachejunction #wegotthis #positivity #rt . . . @arizonasfamily @azcentral @azfoothills @azgfd @azstateparks @azwasterecovery @azhighwaysphotoscapes @12newsaz @instagramaz @visit_arizona (at Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/CK4z772HRyu/?igshid=15dhs7qz4fj4l

Since the sneak preview of The Burning Maze is now floating about (which I have not read, so no spoilers in this post), I thought I'd go back to where we left off in The Dark Prophecy and, well, have a look at the dark prophecy itself, and have some fun guessing at what might be coming our way. Also because @eternal-state-of-voorpret inspired me to take a good hard look at it.
I'll probably be way off (I'm always pants at this sort of thing) but hey, I'm happy enough to be proven wrong.
So here's our lovely Shakespearean sonnet, broken up as it was in TDP.
The words that memory wrought are set to fire, Ere new moon rises o'er the Devil's Mount. The changeling lord shall face a challenge dire, Till bodies fill the Tiber beyond count.
Our main cast have already parsed most of this—an attack on Camp Jupiter in five days, possibly to destroy Ella's recreation of the Sibylline books. And with the reference to the Devil's Mount, I guess we're looking at the attack coming from that direction too … which is interesting given that the Little Tiber actually borders Camp Jupiter on the west, at least according to RR's map of it. But that's probably beside the point.
But I actually think this is only going to be a minor part of the book and we've possibly been mislead by the 'bodies fill the Tiber' bit. Let's face it, I really don't think we're going to get a massive bloodbath because hello, ultimately, children's book. What I do think is that Frank (the changeling lord, as guessed by Leo) is going to pull off something like what he did in HoH with the katoblepones. Because he kind of filled Venice with those bodies (beyond count)!
I had a think about what sort of shapeshifters could possibly come up if 'changeling lord = Frank' was a misdirection, but Greco-Roman mythology isn't exactly filled with notable shapeshifters besides the gods shifting into animals and whatnot. And there's no one god that's really renown for it, so I think the attribution to Frank is probably a safe enough one.
But I stand by my prediction that all this is going to take place fairly early in the book, possibly in the first couple of chapters, because the rest of the prophecy fits the book title and set-up (with Grover and the Labyrinth) much better. Not to mention, there's five days. I mean, sure it's possible the whole book can take place in that short a period (since a lot of the series pretty much happens over one week or two in each book), but five … is kind of cutting it very fine, I think. Especially if we're going into the time-warping Labyrinth. And also the last line talks again about the Tiber reached alive. So prediction: we'll have some action at Camp Jupiter involving loads of monster-killings by our awesome shape-shifting Frank, but resulting in the loss of the Sibylline recreations/kidnapping of Ella, because why not? Half the first two series is people being kidnapped! Followed by which Apollo, Meg, and Grover head off south (I'll get to the next prophecy chunk in a bit), likely going after the Sibylline prophecy/the Oracle of Cumae.
Yet southward must the sun now trace its course, Through mazes dark to lands of scorching death To find the master of the swift white horse And wrest from him the crossword speaker's breath.
Okay, so south they go, and we're pretty much committed to the Labyrinth now. Here's the interesting thing—in THO, we have people accidentally ending up in Peru. We also have the introduction of Paolo, a Brazilian demigod. Could this be a clue that we're heading to South America? (The Atacama Desert borders Peru and is the driest in the world … just saying. There's also the Sechura Desert in Peru). Not to mention Peru is southwest! Of course, it could just be that we're headed to Arizona or some other US desert or really hot state (you US citizens will know what there is better than me, I'm sure) but wouldn't it be cool if we do go overseas? (I loved popping over to England in Ship of the Dead, but hey, I'm biased. And I'm fairly sure RR's 'verse isn't going all the way to Asia, so I'll take the UK as a win.)
The master of the swift white horse is posited to be the third emperor, but I don't know—this could in many different ways. I admit I thought immediately of Arion, but I think he's a different colour? Anyway, a horse named Incitatus was the favoured steed of Roman Emperor Caligula (and he actually attempted to appoint the horse a priest …), which could point at him being the final of the triumvirate. More on that in a bit.
Apollo names the crossword speaker as the Erythraean Oracle, which gives me pause, because we're already looking at finding the Sibylline Cumae, and I kind of think we're probably going for one Oracle per book (since there's conveniently five and five books … and I'm fairly sure the last one has to be Delphi, because Apollo slaying Python makes a nice symmetry and relates back to old mythology). So which would it be?
Legend has it that the Erythraean Sibyl spewed prophecies in the shape of leaves, which connects nicely back to Meg and Demeter's daughter's ancient roots … which brings us to the next stanza.
To westward palace must the Lester go; Demeter's daughter finds her ancient roots. The cloven guide alone the way does know, To walk the path in thine own enemy's boots.
This bit has been glossed over quite a bit in TDP, where Apollo just goes how he can't wrap his mental fingers over what the westward palace means. Which just means this probably is the plot 'twist' in the next book. I admit the first thing I think of with westward palace is Mount Othrys, but I also think that's pretty unlikely, because the Titans are pretty much done with. But then, given the Triumvirate's apparent hand in orchestrating/financing those wars … possibly they're building on something from that?
As for Demeter's daughter's ancient roots, I do think that goes beyond a simple family connection. It's interesting to note that Demeter was associated with the Eleusinian Mysteries, which RR has not really drawn upon thus far in any of his books. So while admitting I have no clue how that could possibly be spun out, I do think it may be somehow related to that.
We've pretty much committed Grover as the cloven guide, but relying on him to know the way suggests more than just his ability to get them through the Labyrinth, because let's face it—Grover was never the Labyrinth guide back in BotL. I'm guessing the 'the way does know' discusses a different way that Grover knows about—possibly providing an answer to that last line: to walk the path in thine own enemy's boots. And Grover knows plenty about walking in (literally) another's shoes. Even traitorous, drag-you-down-to-Tartarus shoes.
And okay, side point that I can't quite work into the rest, but let's not forget the Teumessian Fox that got raised at the end of TDP—I think it's got to come up at some point (if not in this book then one of the next). I just can't figure out where to slot it into the prophecy just yet. Unless the lands of scorching death is a reference to a modern-day Thebes.
When three are known and Tiber reached alive, 'Tis only then Apollo starts to jive.
I'm guessing the three here refer to all three emperors in the Triumvirate, which sparks the guessing game as to which is the last. My money’s on Caligula, who seems like a shoe-in given his description as referring to himself as a god during his own lifetime. And also, he owned a swift (possibly white) horse.
Finally, Apollo starts to jive could refer to some godly power finally returning to him (well, he's had some flashes on occasion, but this could be the point at which he finally gains a modicum of control over it).
And this brings us back to the Tiber, and the question of what prophecy will shape this book. There's two ways I think the overarching plot could go. One, they track down the Erythraean Sibyl and get the prophecy from her; two they rescue the Sibylline/Cumaean Oracle and the next prophecy leads to the Erythraean. I favour the book being about the Sibylline Oracle because it makes a nice little enclosed adventure within a bigger series, which is neater, literarily speaking. As opposed to resolving a new Oracle and leaving the existing one dangling for two books (since we are pretty certain to be going to Camp Jupiter where the Sibylline books will be under attack).
And here's a question about poetry and prophecies in the upcoming books. We've already seen the limerick and the sonnet, and most likely there's two more to go if the next two books will follow the same general structure. Since every chapter title's a haiku, it might be unlikely that one of the prophecies will end up being one (it's not easy squeezing a prophecy into seventeen syllables … believe me, I've tried!) Yet it might be poetic (sorry!) if Apollo's final prophecy comes out in his over-abused favourite style.
I don't think RR will go for a long one again, so my money's on something like a sestet, a sestina, or even free verse (hey, you never know!) Or maybe we’re looking at visual poetry if it’s the Erythraean Oracle ...

There is a beautiful labyrinth in a desert landscape setting behind these doors. Go check it out! Here is what Arizona Labyrinth Connections Representative Marian Sheehan says, “The Labyrinth sits adjacent to Pinnacle's Memorial Garden, which is entered through a large wooden gate, Once inside, I followed the short pathway to the labyrinth. As I began to walk the circuits, I became aware of the quiet and beauty surrounding me. Before I knew it, I was standing in the center wondering if I had skipped a circuit or two. But, no, this labyrinth is small, only 25 ft. in diameter, and relatively easy to walk. I calmly stood there gazing at the beautiful blue sky. When ready, I began to walk away from the center. It was then that I heard and saw the waters bubbling over small boulders into the ponds and noticed the bench inviting me to sit a spell. Once I exited through that wooden entryway, I paused to look back. Across the beam above the doors was carved: "HE LEADS ME BESIDE STILL WATERS." I thought: Why did I not see this when I entered? Would it have made any difference? No, I answered.............and exited the grounds more peacefully than when I came.”Marian Sheehan, Arizona Labyrinth Connections Representative.
