I've seen a lot of kpop idols, young gugak singers, and all other sing Arirang but it only hits when it's someone with "Han" in their voice singing it. Something about representing all the times they won over hardships, all the metaphorical and real 고개s that they crossed. Don't even ask me why - I'm not even Korean -but it's like... listening to carnatic/hindustani music by a person that doesn't know or doesn't feel what Bhakti is. Now a lot of young gugak singers have "Han" in their voices like Song So Hee or Kim Tae Yeon or even non-Gugak singers like Cha Ji Yeon and they do great (Cha Ji Yeon's 네박사 is fantastic and I love her for the genre-bender that she is), but my point still stands for this very specific version of the Arirang *steps off soapbox*

Arirang’s Painterly Tattoos
