Thanks to my unexpected hiatus, this is more like a Week-and-a-Half In Review. What does that mean for this column? It means there are 10 nominees for Game of the Week, but beyond that, it's going to be business as usual. Oh, actually there's one other difference today. Usually, I write both a Week In Review and a new review on Sundays. It's a lot of writing! I'm skipping the review today, just to see how that feels. Later in this post, I'll share my thoughts on former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé's business memoir. A few weeks ago, I came across a 2021 presentation by Meghna Jayanth that raises fascinating questions about the default structures and values in game design.
Game of the Week
This crop of games contains so many that were almost onto something, but there's no question which one was best.
Tumblr media
Antecrypt⚡ is a twin-stick shooter where movement stick works exactly the way you'd expect and the aiming stick does not. It drifts here and there, totally at random, landing in the right place about as often as a stopped clock. It's a weird, maddening hook, made all the more frustrating by a weapon that burns through its batteries quickly when fired, which can only be recharged by standing in the range of the aiming reticle. It's a skill-based game with the compellingly random highs and lows of a slot machine, all wrapped in a cool, confident package. Great visual design, great enemy design, great level design, great progression system—if you haven't already read the review or given Antecrypt⚡ a try for yourself, get on that. Special mention also goes to clever metroidvania Arachnopunk, which is an admirable effort, even if it's not so hot in execution. Arigatou, Ningen-san! is nothing revolutionary, but parents of toddlers should check out this interactive picture book.
Disrupting the Game by Reggie Fils-Aimè
The local library finally got a copy of my old boss' book.
Tumblr media
Reggie leveraged key differentials to push messaging in new markets. This disruptive way of thinking, and his decisive execution, drove sales in categories that were not previously thought of as receptive to high-margin product. Disrupting the Game is not a tell-all from a video game insider. It's a book by a business executive, aimed at those who wish to follow a similar path. Reggie (he often insists on being addressed by his first name) is a man with an incredible breadth of experience, from hocking Crisco to nearly making Shigeru Miyamoto cry by insisting that Wii Sports be included at no additional cost with every Wii in North America. He's heavy on business buzzwords, which I generally find off-putting, yet there's no denying that the man is an efficient communicator. The major events of his professional life make for a breezy read. That's my biggest complaint, actually. The book is a bit too general and optimistic. I'm still not sure Reggie understands what Nintendo had with Wii U or what went wrong. He spells out the lessons aspiring business leaders should take away from each of his anecdotes, but even in the stories where he admits fault, he seems to come out ahead. I want the lessons that come from abject mistakes. I want details. But Reggie is a slick businessman, and big business keeps details close to the chest. Reading this book won't teach you anything about a typical day in the office for NOA's president. Instead, he focuses on events that have already been covered extensively, like E3 presentations, and console launches. That, and his relationship with the late Satoru Iwata. This is the stuff that makes Disrupting the Game worth reading, whether you care about business or not. It feels like the reason the book was written. While Reggie obviously cares very much about passing on his professional wisdom to the next generation, he needs to preserve memories of his late friend and colleague. I'm glad he has. If you just know the Regginator as the funny "my body is ready" meme guy, I'm not sure you'll get much out of his book. If, like me, you were closely following Nintendo news throughout Reggie's reign (and occasionally seeing him in the hallways at work), you already have a good sense of how he reshaped the company. And if you're really like me, you'll enjoy taking another condensed trip from the days of Bigfoot Pizza to the launch of Nintendo Switch. If you've already read the outstanding Ask Iwata and still miss that lovely man, Disrupting the Game is a must. I just hope the next book approaches all its subjects with the specificity and range of emotions afforded Iwata-san. There's a brief story in the epilogue about teetotaler Shigeru Miyamoto joining Reggie at a New York bar before losing his mind over the establishment's collection of pipes. It so wonderfully captures the magic of the man's curiosity that I now want Reggie to drop whatever he's doing and write Miyamoto's biography. I've always thought he was too shy to allow anyone to write such a book, but if there's anyone who could wear him down, it's Reggie.
Meghna Jayanth: White Protagonism and Imperial Pleasures in Game Design
youtube
I'm going to skip the recap and just let Meghna Jayanth speak for herself, either through the above video or the written word. I am not opposed to "imperial pleasures" in games. I regularly commit atrocities in games, and I enjoy it. Conquering digital worlds and amassing absurd in-game wealth isn't hurting anyone, and it's not hard to understand why it feels rewarding. A good game designer, however, does not say, "Let's keep doing the same stuff we've liked in other games." A good game designer questions everything. What's been done before? Why was it done that way? What are the alternatives? Since listening to Jayanth's speech, I can't stop noticing imperialist measures of success in everything I play. It doesn't dampen my enjoyment. I'm just noticing. Noticing and questioning.
youtube
Beyond Blue is one of this week's free Epic Games Store games. It's an Endless Ocean-style scuba game, produced as a tie-in with nature documentary series Planet Earth: Blue Planet II. I went for a few dives this weekend and immediately found it weird that my goal was to head beneath the waves and get everything. In fairness, you're not actually removing anything from the ocean. You're vaguely "scanning" animals, but the way it's presented is so aggressively targeting the need to tick every box and earn every unlockable that the splendor of our world and the save-the-whales message of the narrative are quickly lost to find everything, mark everything, own everything, and master the one place on our planet not yet 100% mastered by man. Um, in the name of understanding and conservation, of course.

Reviewing everything I play in the itch.io racial justice bundle
Night In The Woods - 4 I may not have been in the right place, mentally, to play it, but NITW made me exceptionally sad. The amount of sadness I felt sort of overpowered the moments of happiness and humor. I guess I was expecting the ending to provide more closure for the characters that I didn't get. At the very least, I can tell that things are going to be better in the future for Mae and her friends. The game is beautiful and the writing is good. I'll probably replay this as an adult and see if my view on the game changes. But, for now, I'm not sure what I'm missing. Social Interaction Trainer - 2 Things start out reasonably funny- it definitely communicates what anxiety in intimate situations can feel like. Where *do* you put your eyes? I don't think the game's design is always on it's game, though- some levels, like the park, lack cues that give you hints as to how to interact properly. There are glitches. And the graphics settings options are sort of questionable. I do like the art style, though. Arigatou, Ningen-san! - 2 Sadly, I can't say I enjoyed this game. I really appreciate games that take tactile approaches to stress relief, but this one just didn't work for me. The animals are illustrated in a way that makes them look like real animals rather than stress balls- you wring them, stretch them, and interact with them in a way that feels pretty unnatural. This might've been okay on it's own, but the sound effects are almost wet- maybe even like something tearing- it just put me off too much and I found myself getting more stressed instead of less stressed. For people like me, I feel perhaps this concept could have been more effective with animals that are illustrated like stress balls or squeeze toys. 3D models would've been really cool. As it stands, though, if we're similar, I can't say this game is enjoyable. For what it's worth, the music is cute and the language component is fun. Go Morse Go! Arcade Edition - 4 I'm definitely biased. This game is insanely cute- the visual presentation is awesome. Morse code is something I've wanted to pick up for a long time, and this game seems like a good addition for getting started! This game probably won't be able to teach you morse code by itself, especially if you want to be proficient, especially for copying- but alongside a free online service like LCWO, I can see it being a good tool. And it's fun! If I were to change one thing, it would be expanded customization of the individual practice modes- being able to pick a few letters at a time for rapid-fire practice could be useful. If morse code and games are something that excite you, this is a game worth purchasing. A game that inspires people to pick up something like morse code is good in my book. I'm part of a group that encourages amateur radio use among other teenagers and I'm definitely going to send this game around! Octodad: Dadliest Catch - 5 I may be mistaken, but I believe Octodad was the first of what would become many games dedicated to "zany physics adventures with wacky controls", sort of sans gmod. I remember this game being extremely popular on YouTube for a time, and I'm super glad to have finally been able to play it as part of the racial justice bundle. The game's humor still holds up, the controls are wacky but fun, and there's plenty to do on a second playthrough. I like how the scientists sound like they're from Half-Life. You can't go wrong! A Short Hike - 5 I have near-constant headaches, this game brought me a lot of peace and I didn't feel any pain while playing. It brought me a seriously needed moment of happines and I am really grateful to have been able to play it. I love the way the characters are written.

ありがとう、人間さん! (Arigatou, Ningen-san!) (Mac): COMPLETED!
ありがとう、人間さん! (Arigatou, Ningen-san!) (Mac): COMPLETED!
This is an animal squashing game. You find animals around the town, then squash them everywhichway until they’re happy and then they move in with you. Or something?
It’s utterly bizarre.
Anyway, I squashed all the animals and then it was the end of the game. I felt unfulfilled. Maybe I need squashing now?

Chapter Two: First time Encounters
Disclaimer: I do NOT own InuYasha and all that stuff…..things would have been different if I did . I do own this story line and any and all new characters that will be popping up
A/N: Alright, finally I present Chapter two! Please forgive this poor writer's slowness ;-;
Chapter Two: First Time Encounters
"I….am….going….to…kill….that…cat…" Souta muttered, his voice laced with anger as he pushed himself into a sitting position and laid a hand on his head rubbing in slight pain. Brushing his long bangs from his eyes he glanced around trying to figure out where he was. "Shit….." he muttered under his breath as his eyes were met with wood and climbing plants. 'First I'm going to skin it…..than I'm going to make a nice new bag for Onee-chan….' His internal rant was cut short as he looked up, intending to call him mother to toss down the rope latter. "I….am in so….much trouble…." He breathed as his eyes were not met with the ceiling of the well house…but of clear blue sky and the sun filling the will. He stared, his eyes wide, mind not fully registering what had just happened to him. Slowly he held his hand up, catching a leaf that floated lazily down to him, and then his mind caught up with what had happened. He had just fallen down the well…and it had worked.
Slowly he pushed himself up and brushed himself off and he quickly tried to think of what he was going to do. 'First….I need to get a safe place…..That, CRAP WHAT'S HER NAME?! oh…Kaeda yea….her place should do….' He thought as he examined the wall to try and climb out. Finally he found some good solid foot holds 'Must be Onee-chan's. ' he thought offhandedly as he started climbing carefully. As he climbed he ran through everything that Kagome had ever told him of where everything was. Half way up he had to adjust his weight only now realizing that he still had his backpack slung over his shoulder.
'Alright, I just have to go…..east….no…North….no' Once again, his internal monolog, or as he liked to call it his 'ETERNAL MOVIE!' was cut short as what he was gripping to keep himself to the wall, gave way. With a cry of surprise his arms flailed as he tried with all his might to keep his balance, but it was useless. "SHIT!" he cried out as he felt his body start to fall backwards away from the wall and into air. On instinct he closed his eyes, preparing for the contact with the ground that he was sure was going to hurt.
Suddenly his quick decent was stopped as he was jerked to a halt midair with a grunt of the sudden stop and before he could react any he was pulled upwards and suspended there. "You are unharmed." A deep calm voice said from somewhere in front of him. Slowly he cracked one eye to see who it was. At first all he saw was a mass of white hair and a glint of golden eye. The name 'InuYasha' quickly came to his throat, but died before ever reaching his lips. His 'rescuer's' hair was longer, and more tamed than InuYasha's and his eyes…..his eyes were colder, deadlier and sure as hell more gold than the hanyou he knew so well. On the man's face were a pair of dark, reddish purple stripes that looked more like tattoos. As he quickly studied the man before him he saw that the same marks were on his wrist and over his eyelids, and finally, a crescent moon adorned his forehead. Slowly, and promptly a name flowed through his mind as his eyes scanned the man's attire as well.
"Y-You're Sesshou-maru-sama!" he stammered, swallowing in nervousness. 'Ok Souta….stay calm….focus…..don't let the powerful inuyoukai see how fucking FREAKED OUT YOU ARE!' he shouted in his mind. "Hai." The inuyoukai lord said, raising an eyebrow as his own golden eyes studied the boy.
'He wears strange attire….just like that miko.' He thought off handedly as he looked at the odd haori and hakamas the boy wore.
"Ah…A-Arigatou, Sesshou-maru-sama." He said swallowing and watching the silent lord that held him above the well.
After a long moment Sesshou-maru silently looked at the ningen boy that he held above the empty run down well. A slight frown creased his marble like feature as he discretely sniffed the boy's scent. 'His scent….it's almost just like that onna's! That miko that travels what that bastard brother of mine!' he thought angrily, a low growl pulling from his throat. At the sound of the man growling Souta flinched on instinct but still watched him warily, his eye and face not revealing how terrified he was on the inside. The inuyoukai watched the boy, inwardly bemused at the lack of fear, even though it was obvious.
"SESSHOU-MARU-SAMA! WHERE DID YOU GO M'LORD?!" a young high pitched voice called from the forest around them, causing Souta to start a little and the lord in question to glance to his right.
"I am right here, Rin." He said with an inward sigh, sometimes he took a lot to remember why he kept the loud young ningen onna with him. Turning his gaze back to the boy in his grasp he spoke "Remove all your weapons."
Souta swallowed, gaining strength for his voice "I…I have none m'lord." He said, remembering to add in the honorific, not wanting to be killed just yet.
"Do not lie to me boy." Was the inuyoukai's cold reply, warning etching his words in stone.
"I'm not. I swear I'm not!" he tried to assure the dangerous man before him. Quickly her emptied his pockets, both pants, and jacket. Holding out his hands he showed him that all he had were small things. In his palm lay a few yen, some scraps of paper, two Mars bars, a handkerchief and his house key.
Sesshou-maru blinked and looked at the items. He was able to figure out what the paper was, the square of fabric, though he was confused as to why it was nearly scentless, even the money and key, but the bars of sweet smelling something intrigued him. Souta watched him, seeing that he was examining the chocolate in his hand as he lowered to sit on the lip of the well. "I-It's candy…from my land." He explained lamely as he quickly opened one of them. Sesshou-maru watched him carefully as he moved as he sensed Rin coming closer. Watching with sharp eyes he carefully took the corner the boy had broken off and offered to him. Slowly he sniffed it, checking for poisons before slipping it into his mouth.
Sesshou-maru blinked quickly at the taste of the brown sweet in his mouth, while Souta inwardly prayed that InuYoukais weren't affected by chocolate like regular inus. "It is…..strange." Sesshou-maru admitted finally as the chocolate melted into his mouth.
Souta opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off by a small girl crashing through the brush, causing him to jump slightly. 'I'm going to die from a heart attack if that keeps happening.' He thought ruefully as he watched the small child come up to the tall inuyoukai without even a second thought. "What is that Sesshou-maru? Who is that? Is he my new guard person?" she asked, firing off her questions much too fast for anyone to answer them. But upon examining the taiyoukai's face, he didn't seem to mind.
"It is sweets. And the rest has yet to be seen." Sesshou-maru said calmly, unaffected by her hyper too fast questions. In his cold eyes, if one knew where to look, they would see how he was calculating the situation that had been presented to him. By scent he could tell that this boy was a relative of that miko onna, and maybe, just maybe, he could use this to his advantage.
As the white haired inuyoukai thought Rin approached the lanky boy on the side of the well. "Good Morning. What's your name? Mine's Rin!" she said cheerfully, giving him a toothy smile. Souta blinked and looked down at her before giving her a small smile.
"Good morning….I'm Higurashi, Souta. You can call me Souta." He said as he leaned forward, his arms resting on his knees. Rin smiled brightly and Souta was taken aback at how everything actually did seem brighter when she smiled like that. It was something he never saw in his time. A smile of pure and utter innocence.
Slowly he smiled back. "It's a pleasure to meet you Rin-kun." He said gently. Rin smiled at him, rocking on her heels.
"What's that?" she asked sweetly, her dark eyes on the open candy bar in his lap, the handkerchief spread out under it. Souta blinked, having totally forgotten about it while he watched her and made sure not to make any fast movements around the ever watching inyoukai.
"Oh, this is sweets from my land….." he said as he broke a square off and held it out to her. "Be careful, it'll melt." He warned as she took it. She looked at him with wide eyes.
"Like a candle?!" she said as she sniffed at him. He gave a small chuckle.
"Hai…kinda like a candle, but tasty." He said rubbing the back of his neck. 'This could be a bad idea…..' he thought as he watched her wide eyes grow wider and her face light up as she stuck the square into her mouth.
----------
"Boy, why are covered in the scent of the miko onna that travels with the hanyou InuYasha." Sesshou-maru suddenly questioned, causing both young ningen's to look up at him. Souta stared at him for a moment before slowly answering, confirming what Sesshou-maru already knew.
"She is Onee-chan, m'lord." He said politely as he looked up at him.
"YOU'RE KAGOME-NEE-CHAN'S OTUKO-SAN?!" Rin cried excitedly as she looked up at him happily. Sesshou-maru looked down at him young ward and gave an inward sigh at the sight of her somehow messy face. 'How did she create such a large mess with such a small object?' he thought ruefully. As her hands came up to wipe her mouth with her kimono sleeve he caught her hands, kneeling slowly before her.
"Jaken." He called, not needing to raise his voice.
"Hai, Sesshou-maru-sama!" the green toad youkai said as he scurried to his master's side from the bushes, Souta making a disgusted face at the sight of him.
'I must remember to kill him for allowing Rin to go through the forest alone.' He thought to himself. "A cloth." He ordered in a calm tone.
"Hai!" Jaken said as he fished out an expensive silk cloth to wipe her face with. Sesshou-maru eyed the cloth some, having an odd feeling that whatever it was covering the young child's mouth, would ruin the cloth.
"Here…." He glanced up some as the ningen boy knelt in the grass, his odd straight black haori's clashing sharply with the emerald of it. Carefully Souta wiped Rin's face and hands clean with his handkerchief. "There you go, all clean." He said with a smile as he folded it some and shoved it in his back pocket.
"Arigato Souta-chan, are you really Kagome-nee-chan's otuko-san?" she asked in wonder looking up at him. He gave her a nod and smile
"Hai, I am. And I can tell you…." He paused for effect, pretending to look around "She snores." At this Rin burst into a fit of giggles.
"You're that baka wench's otouko-san?!" Jaken squawked as he looked at Souta in disgust, as if he was tarnished just by being near him. At this Souta's leg darted out, swiftly going between the space that was there between Sesshou-maru and Rin, the rest of his body crouched and balanced. His foot connected with the toad's face harshly sending him flying back. Silently Souta slid his leg back under him glaring at Jaken.
"Never, call my onee-chan that, or speak of her in such a way, her name is Higurashi, Kagome." He said icily.
Sesshou-maru look at the ningen as he stood, Rin going to see if Jaken was alive. The boy remained crouched watching. 'Hai, this ningen could prove very useful…'
A/N: Yay! The end of chapter two! And what do you know, Sesshy and Rin have had sugar!

Arigatou, Ningen-san!
by Michelle Ma
Price (US): Name your own price
Included In: Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality
Genre: Visual Novel
Pitch: Walk through town finding and petting funny animals. A short, bilingual picture book.
My expectations: Looks super cute. I don't see a single written word in any of the screenshots, and its style is completely unlike any other visual novel I've reviewed so far. I'm feeling good about this.
Review:
If you have a very young child and an iPad, download Arigatou, Ningen-san! right away. It’s going to be a huge hit in your house. For those of us who aren’t churning through a stack of picture books every night, the appeal will be limited.
Tumblr media
A bird named Tori-san (“tori” is Japanese for bird) lands on your house and explains that animals around town need love and attention, setting off a linear journey to find five animals across three screens.
Tumblr media
A snake named Hebi-san (go ahead and guess the Japanese word for snake) is hiding behind a not-at-all-subtly rustling plant. The other four animals aren’t hiding at all, which feels like a missed opportunity.
Tumblr media
Once an animal is found, it must be squashed and stretched, with animations that are guaranteed to send any toddler into paroxysms of giggles. And that’s all there is to it.
Tumblr media
The two-finger controls are built for a touchscreen. On a PC, this is emulated by holding Ctrl while clicking. It works, but it’s inelegant. The writing is cute enough, but it’s not the star of the show. The music and sound effects are fitting, but again, they’re not spectacular. It’s all about funny, squishy animals.
+ Cuuuute. + Funny! + Perfect for tiny kids who are just starting to take an interest that flat, glowing thing you always have in your hand. + Maybe 5-10 minutes from start to finish.
– The animal-squishing scenes take a little too long for my liking. You squish and squish and squish, and at some point—I could never quite figure out the trigger—the animal says, "Cool, that's enough," and the scene ends. – Little variety. How about some more hide and seek? What if all the animals didn't have the exact same request? – Unintuitive mouse and keyboard controls. The game refers to two-finger touchscreen operations as "zoom and pinch"—wouldn't it make more sense to map these actions to the mouse wheel or the right mouse button? Take it easy on the toddlers. – All text is displayed in both English and Japanese at all times. I love that it's bilingual; I'm confused by the execution. As an English speaker who is trying to learn Japanese, it's too complex for me. Most text boxes contain multiple sentences, so I have a hard time comparing the two languages. A furigana option would be helpful, as early readers like myself will likely find the some of the kanji impenetrable. Since there's no recorded speech, I must assume everything's meant to be read by mommy or daddy. If said parent is already fluent in two languages—these specific languages—they're probably capable of translating the writing on their own, leaving me to wonder why all text is displayed in both English and Japanese at all times.
🧡🧡🧡🤍🤍 Bottom Line: Arigatou, Ningen-san is free, it's cute, and the picture book crowd will flip for its funny animal squishing. By the way, have to looked up "ningen" yet? That one will catch you off guard.
