Had a dream and woke up crying:

"I always wanted to play," Naomi admitted, quiet, ashamed. "But my teacher said I didn't have the right hands for it. And now..." She curled her fingers in, as far as they could go. The chill in the wide concert hall was penetrating without an audience in the seats to offer exuding warmth. The police had cut the power hours ago. "It hurts too much to learn for fun."

Jack felt sick to his stomach. He'd only known Naomi for two and a half days, since their kidnappers had locked the doors with them inside, but he felt a deep well of agony for her. Since they'd allowed one person to move about the theater, and had picked Naomi because she had no intimate knowledge of the building, she had been exceedingly helpful to everyone. Whatever someone wanted, she'd do her best to find it. She was quick to offer comfort, a smile, a soft touch to soothe. Even their captors appeared to have become fond of her, since one had gruffly told her to sit down and rest when she'd finally, quietly explained that she had arthritis, worst in her hands, and she couldn't carry the heavy baskets and trays of food anymore.

She was so young. Jack had never realized it could come on so early. He watched her extend her hand to the keys in front of them, gently tapping E sharp with her index finger. It echoed through the empty hall. If he focused on that, it was almost possible to forget that a swat team was getting ready to break in, and they'd warned that they couldn't promise no civilian casualties.

"You should get to play," Jack said around the lump in his throat.

Naomi turned her head from the keys, offering him a slightly bewildered smile. "I don't know how."

"I do," Jack answered, suddenly feeling selfish. He'd wanted to retire from playing to get back at his parents, to go do something with the business degree he'd earned between concerts. It seemed so silly, now. Now that he might die. Now that he knew other people wanted to play but couldn't. Now that he realized how much he actually loved playing, when he didn't have thousands of eyes watching him. "I can play for you."

Naomi blinked at him, brows furrowing together in confusion. "But the police said--"

"I think that would be lovely," Ms. Lucia offered, limping up beside the piano. She held one of her grandchildren's hands in each of hers. Her smile was sad. "Please play something, Jack."

"I could never turn down a request from a lady," Jack replied, and almost laughed at how much of a lie it was. He wished he'd had more time to make it true. He wrapped an arm around Naomi's waist, pulling her close. "Put your hands on top of mine, Naomi."

"But," Naomi began, frowning up at him. But she must have seen something in his face, something desperate and shaken, so she swallowed it back, pushed herself closer to him, and placed her shaking hands on top of his. "Okay."

"Ms. Lucia," Jack said, turning to look up at her with the kindest smile he could manage. "Naomi and I are going to play Susanna's aria."

"I so loved The Marriage of Figaro," Ms. Lucia sighed, moving around the piano so that it was between the doors and her grandchildren. Her smile was still sad, but there was a playful glint in her eyes now. "Bella, Gio, let us show you why my performances always sold out."

Jack focused on the keys. Somehow, he felt an unbearable pressure to make this his best performance, more than when the hall was filled with bodies coveting his last public performance. Knowing this might truly be his last ever.

Naomi's hands were a steady weight on top of his. Her fingers were curved against his, trembling and cold. He felt the urge to tip his head, press his lips to her cheek. But that would be selfish. She deserved more than a desperate, regretful kiss if it was going to be her first. And maybe her last.

"Deh, vieni, non tardar," Ms. Lucia began, voice belting across the empty stage. "O gioia bella, vieni ove amore per goder t’appella--"

It almost covered the sound of explosives blowing the doors open. Naomi couldn't swallow back a frightened sob, and Jack finally turned, pressing his mouth to hers as gunshots began to echo around the concert hall, though whether they belonged to the police or their captors' was anybody's guess as his fingers slammed into the keys, as Ms. Lucia's voice raised in volume, 'finché non splende in ciel notturna face' attempting to drown out the growing noise and failing.
