1/10 Chunk
10/10 Funk
0-1/10 Gunk
Today is the crocodile icefish! (also called the white-blooded fish because apparently they don’t have hemoglobin in their blood) Awhile ago I did the other half of this anonymous user’s request, so today I finally finish their ask!
They are very bony, low chunk. The crocodile icefish is super funky though, getting style points from its cool frill and see-through bits. Also, it doesn’t have red blood cells, which is very weird and I’m kind of jealous. Extreme funk. I couldn’t find much in my brief research about their slime or mucous secretion, so I am left to assume that if they have any, it’s probably not that remarkable. Low gunk.
Overall: 8/10
It reminds me of something I would see in the game Subnautica! Also they’re really cute. Look at its little face.

The Can-do Pelican Eel
The pelican eel, also known as the gulper eel (Eurypharynx pelecanoides), are the only known species of eel in the family Eurypharyngidae. They are found exclusively in the deeper parts of the water column, from depths of 500 up to to 3,000 m (1,600 to 9,800 ft), but are distributed throughout all the world's oceans.
The gulper eel is perhaps most famous for its unique body shape. Like many deep-sea fish, this species is highly adapted to its environment; maximum energy efficiency is the highest priority. To that end, the pelican eel has a large head, and a jaw estimated to be quarter of the total length of its body. The jaw is loosely hinged, meaning that gulper eels can open their mouths extremely wide. The rest of the eel, in contrast, is quite slender and long, about 0.75 m (2.5 ft) in length on average. Most individuals are black--so black, in fact, that they only reflect 0.5% of light; perfect for hiding from potential predators.
Although they look skinny, E. pelecanoides can expand their stomachs to hold prey much larger than themselves. Their primary prey consists of crustaceans and cephalopods, though they may feed opportunistically on other fish. Because it is so well camouflaged, it uses bioluminescent organs on the tip of its tail to attract prey. Gulper eels themselves are preyed upon by lancetfish and other larger deep-sea fish. To deter predators, they will gulp down a large amount of water; this stretches the loose skin around their head and throat, and inflates them to several times their usual size.
Because of their remote location, the breeding habits of gulper eels are relatively unknown. However, it is believed that smell plays a large part in attracting a mate, as pelican eels have highly developed olfactory organs. Like other eels, they're born as tiny, transparent larvae in a state known as the leptocephalus stage. At this stage, they do not have any red blood cells. Researchers aren't sure how long it takes gulper eels to become fully mature, or how long they live, but many believe that adults die shortly after mating.
Conservation status: The population size of E. pelecanoides has not been assessed, and thus the IUCN has not made a determination on its status. The greatest threat for this species is deep-sea trawling, which frequently brings up gulper eels as by-catch.

It is the northernmost occurring species of freshwater fish! Different populations of arctic char can vary drastically in their appearance and genetics, which raises the question if there could be more species than thought.

Fish of the Day
Today's fish of the day is the arctic grayling trout!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4d7d66fb6f92337b3f81160dcb076f65/9eaaaf797901a8a2-79/s400x600/63d26aa2bedb329d1592787e19ef10d7d4c2afb0.jpg)
The arctic grayling trout, scientific name Thymallus arcticus, was requested by Rion! I am always taking fish suggestions, so feel free to message with them! Native to North America, and other areas in the arctic. This fish can mostly be found in Alaskan rivers, branching further into Canada, and across the arctic. Some populations have found their ways into rivers and lakes across the rocky mountains and into the Great Lakes of Michigan. And although this fish is not native to the Columbia basin, or the Mississippi, but has been found in both in the past. They can be found only in cold, clear water, and although coloration changes from population to population, they can be identified by the red fringe across the dorsal fin.
Arctic graylings can be found only in cold, clear water, and although coloration changes from population to population, they can be identified by the red fringe across the dorsal fin. The arctic grayling's diet consists of small fish and insects. Although, they're not picky and will eat anything that will fit in their mouth. This diet supports them reaching around 30 inches in length, and about 8 pounds. They are predated on by fish eating birds, larger fish, and mammals that catch them.
Spawning takes place in the spring, and only in areas with a fine sandy bottom, and a slow to moderate current. Courting is done by flashing the dorsal fins, and mates are chosen often by the starkest color. Eggs are then left behind, and will hatch within 2 weeks. Arctic graylings grow up quickly, and will reach sexual maturity within 2 years of hatching.

The lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata), also known as the giant jellyfish, arctic red jellyfish, or the hair jelly is a species of large jellyfish which inhabits the cold, boreal waters of the Arctic, northern Atlantic, and northern Pacific Oceans and is especially common in the English Channel, Irish Sea, North Sea, and in western Scandinavian waters. Lion's mane jellyfish remain mostly very near the surface, at no more than 66ft in depth (20m) depth. Their slow pulsations weakly drive them forward, so they depend on ocean currents to travel great distances. The jellyfish are most often spotted during the late summer and autumn, when they have grown to a large size and the currents begin to sweep them to shore. Unlike most pelagic jellyfish, they are completely solitary and rarely travel in groups. The lion's mane jellyfish uses its stinging tentacles to capture, pull in, and eat prey such as fish, zooplankton, sea creatures, and smaller jellyfish. Lion’s mane jellyfish are themselves eaten by sea birds, sunfish, other jellyfish species, and sea turtles particularly the leatherback sea turtle. Lion's mane jellyfish are named for their showy, trailing tentacles reminiscent of a lion's mane. They can vary greatly in size from a bell diameter of 20 inches (50cms) to upwards of 6.5ft (2m), with tentacles reaching up to 120ft (36.6m) in length making them amongst the longest animals on earth. They vary in coloration from orange, to tan, to red. While most jellyfish such as the moon jelly have a circular bell, the bell of the Lion's Mane is divided into eight lobes, resembling an eight-pointed star. Each lobe contains about 70 to 150 tentacles, arranged in four fairly distinct rows. Along the bell margin is a balance organ at each of the eight indentations between the lobes – the rhopalium – which helps the jellyfish orient itself. From the central mouth extend broad frilly oral arms with many stinging cells called Cnidocytes. Closer to its mouth, its total number of tentacles is around 1,200. Like other jellyfish, lion's manes are capable of both sexual reproduction in the medusa stage and asexual reproduction in the polyp stage. Lion's mane jellyfish have four different stages in their year-long lifespan: a larval stage, a polyp stage, an ephyrae stage, and the medusa stage.
