Book of Blood: Origin of Perfect Humans
The beginning of society was fraught with chaos. John Smith wandered the barren continent, looking for a place to start the new world. He was lonely, so he made a companion of wheat, blood, and fire, and called her Hella, and she was good. Her temperament was choleric and vivacious. They became a family and planted seeds which would grow into sanctuary, for them and their children.
Hella gave birth to Sondra, who was her grandmother. Sondra was phlegmatic, but even in her occasional laziness proved herself useful. Sondra called forth the life force of earth, and provided the First Feast to the Family, and it was good. But then, from the cornucopia spouted black bile, which gave form to the Fairsex Jester, who was unclothed and ashamed. The crops wilted, and he was driven away. In his wake were wars, famine, death. He corrupted the earth, tainted it, made it an unfit place for the Family to live.
Sondra was sent away for her pity on the Jester. But John of Blood was not unjust. He plucked out her eyes but in doing so gave her new sight, and gave her water to till the earth so she might not starve.
John and Hella bore a son and daughter, who became Math and Logic, and it was good. They erected a wall around their Family, to protect from the corrupted land. When Sondra returned she could not come inside, but implored the Lady of Yellow Bile and Sir Bloody John to take pity on her children. They adopted the best girl and best boy, Art and Language, and it was good.
Sondra cried herself away, forming the phlegmatic river and begetting Labor and Industry, who constructed the outer wall, to protect the phlegmatic family. Here, they worked and played and were content, and it was good.
Each year, the Jester attempts to vault the wall, in doing so tainting the phlegmatic family, making them ugly and deformed. John of Blood saw the image of himself, as Father of Humanity, become sick and enfeebled. Mother Hella did what she could to cure the children of Labor, but those who resisted the cure offered by Industry were given back to the Jester, to be cared for outside, in the hopes that the sun would re-balance their black bile.

John Lynch doesn’t like horror films. He’s not a fan of blood and gore. It’s a genre his Italian mum favoured when he was growing up in the townland of Corrinshego in Co Armagh, but John, not so much. Well, he says that, but his recent body of work might suggest otherwise. In the last few years, he’s appeared in the chilling BBC2 tale, The Terror, British horror film The Banishing and the psychological drama The Head. There’s a sense of something monstrous, supernatural even, at play in all three thrillers. And there’s more gore to come in the new horror flick Boys from County Hell, in which he stars, and which opens in cinemas across Northern Ireland today. “Yes, you’ve got a point,” he laughs, when I present the evidence against his claim that he’s not really a fan of the horror genre. “But for me, it comes down to the scripts and relationships. I worked with the director Christopher Smith before, so when he rang me up about playing a creepy, sinister archbishop in The Banishing, I said yes. “I also worked with Chris Baugh in Canada on two episodes of Tin Star. Both are very talented directors. When Chris Baugh showed me the script for Boys from County Hell, I thought it was really good. It has a lot of dark comedy in it and I’d kept in touch with him after Tin Star, so I thought ‘why not?’. “The Head is set in an Antarctic research centre and everyone ends up dead and The Terror was based on a novel about a real-life expedition with a supernatural element; a mystical creature devouring the men. “Again, they were good scripts, and, in The Terror, I got to play a role I’d never explored before, someone in love with another man. “But yes, I do see a pattern. Perhaps it’s my time of blood.”
"I don't really like horror" says guy who keeps starring in horror projects.

Eva Leonor Smith Riley
Cw: use of a slur, mentions of suicide
For oc names i go with how the parents would name them given the society they live in and vibe. Eva was no different.
Eva gets two lastnames because of naming conventions in mexico, so its her father's surname followed by mother's maiden name.
So first name and middle name:
Eva: is the latin spelling of the hebrew words Chava/Hava meaning life or life giver.
While i could lie and say Eva’s name was chosen of the symbolism that she helps Tommy heal and grow into a better man, she is named Eva after Evita Peron, first lady of Argentina who after her dictator husband was overthrown.
She was rather influentian and there was a myth taht where her body was hidden(it was exhumed and stolen) flowers would appear there.
Eva's name also comes from a 1917 femme fatale played by Mimi Derba in La Tigeresa named Eva who pretended to be a poor woman to win the heart of a lower class man and then broke up with him, faked her death which drove him insane only for her (now married to a rich man) to visit the institution he was in for charity and he kills her in his mad rage.
While the femme fatale is more in line with s1 Grace , Eva reveals in Of Gods and Witches she seduced the president's son and when he discovered his father was gonna have her assassinated while under house arrest he commits suicide ala Antigone and Haemon. This all happened while she was secretly dating her best friend and cousin’s secret girlfriend, Antonia.
But in the fic, Eva is named Eva because her mother, Isabel, schemed to make herself go into labor in the Sistine Chapel(right ubder God's Creation of Eve)to get the current Pope (Benedict XV) attend the baptism and his successor the future Pope Pius XI to be her godfather because the archbishop of mexico refused to go to her family's estate to baptize Eva’s older brother Gabriel.
Leonor: is the portuguese and spanish variant of Eleanor meaning Torch, light and/or sun ray.
Leonor was the name of her great grandmother who descends from Emperor Moctezuma, the last Aztec ruler, through his son Juan Moctezuma who was made a spanish noble. Leonor Moctezuma, Eva’s great grandmother, was born to a member of the Moctezuma family and a Nahua secretary in Mexico City.
Last Names:
Smith: anglo-saxon 'to hit or strike' possibly related to a person who was a metal worker.
So Smith is a common English surname and the surname of a romani traveller king named Absalom Smith in the early 19th century. He died in 1826 with the title of king of the gypsies (please excuse the slur)and had been elected so in the early 19th century according to the Mamchester Times. He was a fiddler and his daughter Beatte Smith was so beautiful there is portrait of her in Belvoir Castle, Manchester.
The Smiths were apparently an important Romani family like the Boswells who the Shelbys claim descendance from and the Welsh Romani woman Tommy seeks to see if the sapphire was cursed is also a Boswell. Eva was originally going to be a Boswell but that would've made her a relative of Tommy and i decided against it.
Riley: anglicized irish last name meaning rye-clearing.
So Eva’s grandfather Patrick Riley was an Irish immigrant and oc nephew to John Patrick Riley, Captain of the Saint Patrick's Battalion who were composed Catholic Irish, Scotsmen. Freed slaves and men of color tired of the racism they dealt with in the US and defected to Mexico right before the Mexican American War in the 1850s.
John Riley immigrated to the US due to the Great Famine and despute being known for his great strength of character and morality died alone and penniless in Veracruz as the torture and defeat of his battalion at the hands of the americans left him with very severe trauma and teh letters D on both sides of his face branded onto his skin for desertion even though he deserted before the war.
It provides as to why Eva is of mixed race and how her grandmother who is old money ended up having red haired children and show how diverse Mexico actually is

Lady Jane Grey’s Diary
First off, I would like to say that this writing should not be used as research. Mary Tudors, and Lady Jane Grey’s personality is most likely completely incorrect. The 2 lady’s in waiting are also completely made up by me. This is merely a school project I decided to post.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
A sting of pain spread across my left cheek, and I fell onto the cold floor, like an injured dove.
“Are you unharmed, madam?” Irene Therese, my lady in waiting, asked me. Her soft blue eyes shined with concern.
“I am alright,” I spoke softly then gestured to the door, asking her to leave. My eyes followed Irene as she left the room, and shut the golden door behind her.
“Your place on the throne is the result of treason!” The princess screamed, her eyes were sharp and her pale cheeks were tinted pink. “You have not earned the crown,” she huffed.
“The crown is lawfully mine, I am not sure what I have done to become queen but King Edward VI requested it on his will,” I stated, my face was relaxed and I spoke in a monotone voice, trying my best to not aggravate the red haired girl anymore. She walked out of the mirror room, mumbling to herself then slammed the door behind her, like a child.
Wax dripped down a white candle that sat in a golden holder, a bright flame burned through it. I dipped a quill into black ink.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
February 7th 1554,
Dear diary,
Today, Mary Tudor striked me across my face; she believes that my right to the throne is illegitimate. I don't exactly disagree, I suspect that my power hungry father in law, John Dudly, was behind it. Although, the princess does not understand that you cannot refuse the crown. The residents in my castle have informed me that the dukes and duchesses are displeased with my husband, Gillford Dudley. They say that he walks around my castle and acts like he’s the king. There is a reason why I made him a duke.
Fare thee well, Lady Jane Grey.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
The sun shone through my lace curtains, waking me up from my slumber. My ladies in waiting helped me get dressed for the day. My copper red dress hugged my body, and my ladies tightened my corset.
My heels clacked as I walked down the castle hallway, hundreds of ethereal paintings with golden frames decorated the walls. A strong smell of lavender caught my attention, then my lady in waiting, Anne smith, walked up to me.
“My queen, Mary Tudor has complained to the privy court, saying she is the rightful heir to the crown!” She declared, breathing heavily, her palms were noticeably wet.
“Tell me, what did they say?’ I questioned, my eyebrows furrowed as I frowned.
“The council members, and the archbishop of canterbury are all on your side. They’ve advised her to be quiet and obedient,” Anne Smith spoke, looking slightly relieved. Then she continued, “Although she is the child of King Henry VII, she has the public's support. So the council has decided that John Dudly shall send an army to capture her, as she’s a danger to you,”.
A gentle breeze sways my copper dress back and forth; the sun shined bright on my pale skin. I usually loved taking walks in gardens, but my mood was dampened. Mary would make a wonderful queen, aside from her catholic faith. My cousin has a strong mind, I wouldn't be surprised if she raises a larger army of her own. My father always told me that you have to earn your place in court and if you cheated your way into power it would never end well; I wish John Dudly knew that.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
February 10th 1554,
Dear Diary,
My suspicions were indeed correct, Mary Tudor wasted no time in raising an army, much greater than John Dudlys. That coward was quick to retreat. I am beyond saddened to know that as soon as John Dudly retreated, the council decided to support Mary. Today was also the day that I was dethroned and my cousin was declared queen, to the great rejoicing of the londoners. After I was deposed, my gorgeous tower was turned into my and my husband’s prison. A part of me believes that I am too young to rule and Mary would make a much better queen, if she converted to protestantism. I will be forever grateful that my cousin has decided to pity us and merely keep us as prisoners. But I remain worried, she's always taken after her father.
Fare thee well, Lady Jane Grey.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
My head faced down, looking at the cold prison floor. I felt myself tense as sharp scissors cut away at my vermillion locks. My ladies in waiting stripped me of my lavish clothing and jewelry, and I was forced to wear a long black dress. I knew what this meant, I closed my tired eyes and whispered a soft prayer, begging god to take pity on my soul.
My head turned to the window and I stared as my husband was taken outside. The peasants shouted, and a few threw rubbish along with rotten food. I looked in horror as he was blindfolded and laid his head on a gray block. My brown eyes widened in dread and sweat dripped down my forehead. I could not bring myself to look away, as the executioner raised his axe and let it fall. Crimson blood squirted from my beloved's neck, his head did not come off. My stomach dropped as the executioner raised his axe one last time. His eyes relaxed, all life drained from his face and his head fell onto a pile of hay, staining it a deep red. My throat burned and my eyes couldn't contain my tears, my face grew wet and I let out loud sobs. It felt as if my heart had been ripped from my chest.
Some time later, two guards, dressed in red, grabbed my arms and led me outside. The Londoners shouted profanities and threw rubbish.
“Since your father, Henry Grey, became involved in Wyatt's rebellion, you have been recognized as a threat to the queen,” A guard spoke in a monotone voice, then he backed away.
“Do you have any last words?’ The executioner, who was carrying a clean axe, asked me. I nodded and turned to the crowd.
“Good people, I am coming hither to die, I wash my hands thereof in innocency before God and you good christian people,” I declared. With shaking hands, I took off my gloves and handed them to my ladies in waiting. Whilst the axeman was handing me a blindfold, he asked me for forgiveness. My voice shook as I replied, “as long as you dispatch me quickly,” “Will you take my blindfold off before I rest my head?” I asked, holding back tears.
“I will not, madam,” The axeman replied. The soft fabric wrapped around my eyes and my vision went black. My heart grew heavier as I grabbed blindly for the block. My breathing became short and I trembled as I began to sob.
“What shall i do? Where is it?” I cried out as panic overcame me. A pair of rough hands guided my head to the block, the hay around it scratched at my knees. “Lord into thy hands I commend my spirit!’ I yelled out, my voice shaking. The shouts of the people grew louder and I could hear a faint crunch and blood dripping onto hay. The sharp pain I felt quickly became muffled. Everything grew quieter, until I couldn't hear anything at all.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
If your reading this, then you probably read it all. And if you did, I congratulate you, as this is fucking longggg.
This isn’t proofread, as I just pasted this from my google doc.

The Last Druid - Documentary on Ben McBrady of The Old Gaelic Order
Maoleachlain
I came across this video wondering how shamanic practices involving hallucinogenic fungi came to be so much a part of Christmastime mythology. The video has nothing on that topic, but gave me some threads to pull for understanding Druids a bit.
My brother mentioned that former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams is a White Druid. I had no idea. Reading about it I was impressed that William's response to Evangelical criticism of his honorific was essentially: Oh bugger off.
This Wikipedia article, Brehon, impressed me. I got to the article searching for Ben McBrady, and here's the link to an article citing McBrady from the Wikipedia article. Brehon is a system of judicial mediation which has quite ancient roots.
Something which is so powerful about prison Abolitionists is their cultivation of approaches and methods that make the kind of future they want. That approach opens up a wide world of possibilities. Reading the Turtle Talk blog has help me to see there are deep precedents in the indigenous cultures of the Americas.
Linda Tuhiwai Smith is a Maori scholar of decolonizing methods. She observes:
Indigenous people have this culture, have this knowledge, and have ways of doing things. And it is the same around the world: there are other ways of imagining ourselves. And that is really important when we think about the contribution that Indigenous people and indigeneity can bring.
I have enjoyed reading John Michael Greer, who is an American Druid. But I've read him mostly around topics of oil and post-carbon futures, heeding little the druid stuff. I am a bit shocked by how I've had my blinkers on. Not really surprised because I'm entrenched this culture, and I'm old. Still, I very much agree with Linda Tuhiwai Smith's point about the importance of Indigenous people and indigenous knowledge bring to responding to the predicaments we find ourselves.

Trump Accuses Biden of Soviet-Style Persecution of Catholics
In a campaign clip released this week on his “Truth Social” platform, former President Donald Trump accused President Joe Biden of “overseeing a Soviet-style persecution of Catholics” and warned that FBI undercover spies are about to infiltrate the churches. Trump added that “Under Crooked Joe Biden, Christians and Americans of faith are being persecuted like nothing this nation has ever seen before.” In response to the alleged persecution, Trump announced that if elected as president again, he would create a new federal task force to fight anti-Christian bias led by a “reformed” Department of Justice that would involve multiple agencies and departments.
Gee whiz! Now, not to be critical, but perhaps someone from the Trump campaign ought to mention to Mr. Trump that Joe Biden has actually been a “devout Catholic” all his life. The thing is, if Trump’s allegations against Biden are actually true, then that means Joe Biden must be so diabolically evil - that he has even decided to “persecute himself.” Thank goodness Trump had the wherewithal to warn those poor, oppressed Catholics about Biden’s devious plan to assemble armed SWAT teams to storm Catholic households and close down all Catholic places of worship. So, folks - this Holiday Season, remember, “You better watch out, you better not cry, and Donald Trump is telling you why - evil Joe Biden is sending in - the FBI.”
What I find quite interesting about a Republican candidate claiming Democrat Joe Biden is persecuting Catholics is that when John F Kennedy ran for President back in the day, Republicans viciously attacked both he and the entire Kennedy family, simply for being Catholics - claiming JFK would take his marching orders directly from the Vatican. So, now, these evangelicals like Catholics? My, my, how times must have changed. Of course, Trump’s favorite phrase is, “This is like nothing this nation has ever seen before.” Well yeah! In fact, TRUMP is something this nation has never seen before,” and if we’re lucky and Jack Smith wins in court - we hopefully never will again.
The fact is, before he entered politics, Trump would have never even stepped foot inside a church, but politician Trump sure knows how to spot a demographic full of suckers when he sees one. This guy really knows his audience and the fact that his base will believe nearly anything - except reality. That reality stuff is for those elite Libtards. You see, Trump realizes his only path to victory is to confuse vulnerable people into getting “really angry about fake issues.” In fact, one might say he’s kind of the “Archbishop of The Church of the Perpetual Victimhood.” Now, there’s some religious credentials his “congregation” can really get behind. Oops, time to pass around the offering plate. After all, the Lord’s frontmen don’t do this shit for free.

Inflation is not the Problem: Corporate Greedflation Is!
I want to raise this timeless analysis from the famous American Bishop Fulton Sheen during the postwar years. This was during the time that the American Catholic Church, along with most Americans, recognized that market fundamentalism needed to be regulated to address social volatility inherent in the inevitable rise of coprorate monopolies (what Adam Smith called Robber Barons). A Keynisan model of regulated macroeconomics emerged which created the prosperity of the 1950's and 60's. Yes, social democracy ironically saved capitalism. This is what made America great (Sorry MAGA... Not Sorry). Archbishop Fulton Sheen knew this truth quite well and analyzed it as you see in my original post above.
So now there is a prominant myth that conservatives somehow made America great during those times and what they tote are the same policies that actually brought on the social volatility of the 1930's. They are once again targetting any government regulations and promoting market fundamentalism which drove the Great Depression and brought on the Second World War. To do this they are promoting both social fears (immigrants and diverse communities) and economic fears like inflation.
Economist and popular educator Robert Reich offers this short video below to unpack the truth behind the inflation myth. Its not government regulation that is behind it, its corporate monopoly and greed that is exacerbating the price that we have been seeing these past years. Ironically its the lack of government regulation that is driving this unfortunate reality.
It is worth recognizing the truth that Archbishop Sheen shared with us back in 1948.
Conservatism is for that reason often nothing else than a pseudo philosophy for the prosperous.
Or as Saint John XXIII reminds us:
Archbishop Fulton Sheen and the Catholic position on Capitalism and Communism
When Pope Francis recently attacked “trickle down” economic theories and unregulated Capitalism many Americans on the political right began to denounce Pope Francis as a “Marxist” or “Socialist.” By question neo-liberal (unregulated) capitalism many assumed that this meant a defense for socialism. The assumption of course is that there are only two working economic models (Capitalism and Socialism) and if your not for one then you must be for the other.
Catholic social teaching has asserted throughout its tradition that it stands apart from these models. Perhaps one of the clearest articulation of this comes from the famous American Archbishop Fulton Sheen:
If by capitalism is meant, not diffused ownership of property, but monopolistic capitalism in which capital bids for labor on a market, and concentrates wealth in the hands of the few then from an economic point of view alone, the Church is just as much opposed to capitalism as it is to communism. Communism emphasizes social use to the exclusion of personal rights, and capitalism emphasizes personal rights to the exclusion of social use. The Church says both are wrong, for though the right to property is personal, the use is social. It therefore refuses to maintain capitalism as an alternative to the economic side of communism. Monopolistic capitalism concentrates wealth in the hands of a few capitalists, and communism in the hands of a few bureaucrats, and both end in the proletarianization of the masses. The true Christian must rid himself of the delusion that in opposing communism the Church thereby puts itself in opposition to all those who would seek thus to change the present economic system…
Those who look to the Church in this hour of peril to pluck out of the fire the chestnuts of liberalism, secularism, materialism, and monopolistic capitalism are doomed to disappointment… It is so easy for those who have made their money under a given system to think that that system must be right and good. Conservatism is for that reason often nothing else than a pseudo philosophy for the prosperous. The Church, however, knows that the disorganization of the world is largely due to the fact that it is not organized by any conscious acceptance of purpose other than the immediate interest of a capitalist class on the one hand, or a Communist class on the other hand. That is why the economic policy of the Church is constantly in opposition to both capitalism and communism.
Fulton J. Sheen, Communism and the conscience of the West (Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1948), p. 79
In defining capitalism as monopolistic capitalism Archbishop Sheen identifies the dangers of an economic model that allows the capitalists, or more specifically the corporate few, to have control over resources, labor, production and even consumption.
This has become our economic reality, a reality that unnerved our famed Archbishop and a global reality that deeply concerns our present Pope. There is a role for the market and the state but fundamentally the primary economic role does not reside with either, it resides with the individual social unit of society that is to say the family and the local community. This is the basis for the economic theory that I will discuss in a following post, the theory of Distributism.

THE SENTENCES
I AM the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.
John 11. 25-26
I KNOW that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another.
Job 19. 25-27
WE brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

THE BIDDING
WE are here today in St George’s Chapel to commit into the hands of God the soul of his servant Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. With grateful hearts, we remember the many ways in which his long life has been a blessing to us. We have been inspired by his unwavering loyalty to our Queen, by his service to the Nation and the Commonwealth, by his courage, fortitude and faith. Our lives have been enriched through the challenges that he has set us, the encouragement that he has given us, his kindness, humour and humanity. We therefore pray that God will give us grace to follow his example, and that, with our brother Philip, at the last, we shall know the joys of life eternal.
All sit. The choir sings
ETERNAL Father, strong to save,
Whose arm doth bind the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea.
O Saviour, whose almighty word
The winds and waves submissive heard,
Who walkedst on the foaming deep,
And calm amid its rage didst sleep:
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea.
O sacred Spirit, who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
Who bad’st its angry tumult cease,
And gavest light and life and peace:
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea.
O Trinity of love and power,
Our brethren shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them whereso’er they go:
And ever let there rise to thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

THE FIRST LESSON
Ecclesiasticus 43. 11-26
read by the Dean of Windsor
LOOK at the rainbow and praise its Maker; it shines with a supreme beauty, rounding the sky with its gleaming arc, a bow bent by the hands of the Most High. His command speeds the snow storm and sends the swift lightning to execute his sentence. To that end the storehouses are opened, and the clouds fly out like birds. By his mighty power the clouds are piled up and the hailstones broken small. The crash of his thunder makes the earth writhe, and, when he appears, an earthquake shakes the hills. At his will the south wind blows, the squall from the north and the hurricane. He scatters the snow-flakes like birds alighting; they settle like a swarm of locusts. The eye is dazzled by their beautiful whiteness, and as they fall the mind is entranced. He spreads frost on the earth like salt, and icicles form like pointed stakes. A cold blast from the north, and ice grows hard on the water, settling on every pool, as though the water were putting on a breastplate. He consumes the hills, scorches the wilderness, and withers the grass like fire. Cloudy weather quickly puts all to rights, and dew brings welcome relief after heat. By the power of his thought he tamed the deep and planted it with islands. Those who sail the sea tell stories of its dangers, which astonish all who hear them; in it are strange and wonderful creatures, all kinds of living things and huge sea-monsters. By his own action he achieves his end, and by his word all things are held together.
All remain seated as the choir sings
THE JUBILATE
O BE joyful in the Lord, all ye lands:
serve the Lord with gladness,
and come before his presence with a song.
Be ye sure that the Lord he is God:
it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving,
and into his courts with praise:
be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name.
For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting:
and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.
Benjamin Britten (1913-76), in C

THE SECOND LESSON
John 11. 21-27
read by the Archbishop of Canterbury
MARTHA said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world.”
All remain seated as the choir sings
PSALM 104
The Duke of Edinburgh requested that Psalm 104 should be set to music by William Lovelady.
Originally composed as a cantata in three movements, it was first sung in honour of His Royal Highness’s 75th Birthday.
MY SOUL give praise unto the Lord of heaven,
In majesty and honour clothed;
The earth he made will not be moved,
The seas he made to be its robe. Give praise.
The waters rise above the highest mountain,
And flow down to the vales and leas;
At springs, wild asses quench their thirst,
And birds make nest amid the trees.
The trees the Lord has made are full of vigour,
The fir tree is a home for storks;
Wild goats find refuge in the hills,
From foes the conies shelter in the rocks.
My soul give praise unto the Lord of heaven,
In majesty and honour clothed;
The earth he made will not be moved,
The seas he made to be its robe. Give praise.7
O Lord, how manifold is your creation,
All things in wisdom you provide;
You give your riches to the earth,
And to the sea so great and wide.
You take your creatures breath and life is ended,
Your breath goes forth and life begins;
Your hand renews the face of earth,
Your praise my whole life I will sing.
My soul give praise unto the Lord of heaven,
In majesty and honour clothed;
The earth he made will not be moved,
The seas he made to be its robe. Give praise.
William Lovelady (b. 1945) abridged and arranged for choir and organ by James Vivian (b. 1974) with the composer’s permission
Words from Psalm 104, adapted by Sam Dyer (b. 1945)
The choir sings
THE LESSER LITANY
Let us pray.
All sit or kneel.
LORD, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
OUR Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
But deliver us from evil. Amen.
THE RESPONSES
ENTER not into judgement with thy servant, O Lord.
For in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
Grant unto him eternal rest.
And let light perpetual shine upon him.
We believe verily to see the goodness of the Lord.
In the land of the living.
O Lord, hear our prayer.
And let our cry come unto thee.
William Smith (1603-45), adapted by Roger Judd, MVO (b. 1944)
The Lord’s Prayer, Music by Robert Stone (1516-1613) from John Day’s Certaine Notes 1565
THE COLLECT
The Dean of Windsor shall say
O MERCIFUL God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the resurrection and the life; in whom whosoever believeth shall live, though he die; and whosoever liveth, and believeth in him, shall not die eternally; who also hath taught us by his Holy Apostle Saint Paul, not to be sorry, as men without hope, for them that sleep in him: We meekly beseech thee, O Father that, when we shall depart this life, we may rest in him, as our hope is this our brother doth; and that, at the general resurrection in the last day, we may be found acceptable in thy sight; and receive that blessing, which thy well-beloved Son shall then pronounce to all that love and fear thee, saying, Come ye blessed children of my Father; receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. Grant this we beseech thee, O merciful Father through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.
THE PRAYERS
The Archbishop of Canterbury shall say
O ETERNAL God, before whose face the generations rise and pass away, thyself unchanged, abiding, we bless thy holy name for all who have completed their earthly course in thy faith and following, and are now at rest; we remember before thee this day Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, rendering thanks unto thee-for his resolute faith and loyalty, for his high sense of duty and integrity, for his life of service to the Nation and Commonwealth, and for the courage and inspiration of his leadership. To him, with all the faithful departed, grant thy peace; Let light perpetual shine upon them; and in thy loving wisdom and almighty power work in them the good purpose of thy perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Dean of Windsor, Register of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, shall say
O LORD, who didst give to thy servant Saint George grace to lay aside the fear of man, and to be faithful even unto death: Grant that we, unmindful of worldly honour, may fight the wrong, uphold thy rule, and serve thee to our lives’ end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
GOD save our gracious Sovereign and all the Companions, living and departed, of the Most Honourable and Noble Order of The Garter. Amen.
O GOD of the spirits of all flesh, we praise thy holy name for thy servant Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who has left us a fair pattern of valiant and true knighthood; grant unto him the assurance of thine ancient promise that thou wilt ever be with those who go down to the sea in ships and occupy their business in great waters. And we beseech thee that, following his good example and strengthened by his fellowship, we may at the last, together with him, be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Archbishop of Canterbury shall say
O LORD God, when thou givest to thy servants to endeavour any great matter, grant us also to know that it is not the beginning, but the continuing of the same unto the end, until it be thoroughly finished, which yieldeth the true glory; through him, who for the finishing of thy work laid down his life, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Amen.
ALMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies and giver of all comfort: Deal graciously, we pray thee, with those who mourn; that casting every care on thee they may know the consolation of thy love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.10
All sit as the choir sings
THE ANTHEM
GIVE rest, O Christ, to thy servant with thy Saints:
where sorrow and pain are no more;
neither sighing, but life everlasting.
Thou only art immortal, the Creator and Maker of man:
And we are mortal, formed of the earth, and unto earth shall we return.
For so thou didst ordain, when thou createdest me, saying,
Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
All we go down to the dust; and, weeping, o’er the grave,
we make our song: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Houghton Hall, Norfolk: Bob’s palazzo
The hall was built as a residence for Walpole, Britain's first prime minister. How a mere politician – and a commoner at that - could afford such splendour is no mystery, given the corruption of the early 1700s.
Building a country house in his native Norfolk had several advantages for Robert Walpole. He could impress people with displays of his wealth and power. And he could keep his wife there while conducting the affairs of the state - as well as more private ones - in London.
The Walpoles had been country squires in this north-west corner of East Anglia for a long time. In 1721, after become prime minister, Robert came up with a plan to turn the family manor into a grand home in the Italian style.
The estate manager looked at the drawings and saw a problem: there was a village where Bob's palazzo would stand.
Walpole shrugged: "I'll just move those cottages there." He pointed to a spot two miles from their present location.
"You can't do that," the manager said. "I'm the most powerful man in the land now. I can do as I bloody well please."’ "How do you suppose the villagers would feel about it?" "I should think they'll be delighted," Walpole said. "Why?" "Have you ever heard the phrase Build Back Better?" "No." "Are you suggesting I invented it?" "Yes." "Thank you."
As he surveyed his future aggrandized estate, Walpole spotted a bunch of deer. One of them was white.
"What is this?" he asked the manager. "It's an albino deer." "It looks like a unicorn with antlers." "They are very rare indeed." "I want all the deer in my park to look like that."
The manager pointed out that finding a male and female albino deer would be difficult enough, but culling their non-albino offspring and repeating the operation over generations would be a huge waste of animal life and human effort.
Walpole shrugged: "What did I say about being the most powerful man in the land?"
So the palace was built, the village was moved and to this day all the deer in the park are white.
Walpole's descendants still live in Houghton Hall. You can visit part of the grounds but the State Rooms have been closed since the start of the pandemic. I suppose one can understand the desire of the current marquess to keep the Great Unwashed at a distance. I wouldn't want the paying public to breathe all over my flat either. Still, it's a bit of a shame.
You can visit the walled garden though. I didn't see the point of paying £10 a ticket to look at some shrubbery, but the prospect appealed to my wife. We had travelled all the way from London so we went.
Now I don't like gardens. You say the word Capability and I stop listening. In fact we moved from a semi-detached to an apartment specifically to escape burgeoning vegetation.
But I have to admit that the walled garden at Houghton Hall is something else.
Some bits reminded me of the Jardins du Luxembourg back home. Then I turned a corner and I was in Versailles. I found even the flowers magnificent. I impressed my wife by correctly identifying hydrangeas (it was a guess, but it may have been an educatedly Freudian one.)
The centrepiece of the place – the bit that has everyone go "Wow!" - was a flame fountain.
Walpole had a knack for the wow-factor. I wanted to read about him so went to gift shop and paid another £10 for a booklet on him.
Nothing, I found out, predestined Robert for grand things: he was short, fat, unkempt, and a third son. In the early 1690s, he was sent to Cambridge to prepare for a life of ecclesiastical obscurity.
His father, a colonel also called Robert, mainly saw him as source of cash: in 1700 Bob the elder arranged a marriage with the daughter of a rich merchant and pocketed the dowry to settle his gambling debts.
But then young Walpole's luck turned. His two elder brother AND the colonel died in quick succession. At the age of 24 he inherited not just the Houghton estate but a parliamentary sinecure that went with it. He never looked back.
A gifted orator, a tireless worker and a master at sharp parliamentary practices, he became the key man in the Commons and took over the Whig faction. He got the top job in 1720 and kept it for 20 years, a longevity record for UK prime ministers he still holds.
Incidentally, the booklet said, he did not like to be called "prime minister". He was the chancellor. But as this was the most senior cabinet position at the time, wags gave it the ridiculously grand title of "prime minister". In time a term of derision became an official title.
Walpole knew exactly whom to bully, whom to flatter and whom to bribe. He grew very rich as a result. Like other successful PMs down the ages, Walpole was duly hated by the best writers of his time. He inspired Swift, Fielding and Gay to peaks of satirical literature.
Our visit to Houghton Hall helped me refine my views on British history.
Continentals of a liberal bent like me tend to see the Glorious Revolution as a cut-off point. Before 1688 it's all mayhem, misery, civil war, bloodthirsty kings and martyred archbishops; after 1688 we have the parliamentary system, clean successions, tolerance, the Industrial Revolution, the sheltering of immigrants, resistance to tyranny and the invention of the World Wide Web.
In short 1688 begat John Locke, who begat David Hume, Adam Smith, and every Great Briton from Jane Austen to Brunel, Dickens, Lewis Carroll, John Cleese, David Gilmour and Emma Raducanu.
I now realise that my "It's the Glorious Revolution, stupid" view was a tad simplistic. The transition from absolute rule to representative democracy and the Enlightenment was a messy one. Real change is always gradual. Given my nationality and liberal bent, I should have realised that abrupt revolutions don't work.
It took someone who was steeped in the old, venal ways to stabilise a fragile parliamentary order. That person was Walpole. He deserved his palace. I'm not sure about his current descendants though: I hope they reopen the State Rooms soon and stop culling deer that happen to be the wrong colour.
