Arc 10, Reflections

Eh.

Arc 10 is sorta... there?

Like, it's got some highlights and it serves some useful purposes, but I'll admit it's not really standout. Too much of it is consumed by the fight, and I admit it was hard to actually enjoy the fight because I kept reading it looking for the why of it. The 'why' are they doing this fight thing.

What were they after, etc - didn't get really revealed until after, and so that kind of detracted from reading the fight itself.

Interludes 10 and 10.5 were the highlight, getting to see the inside of Alec's twisted but also relatable mind, the gut-wrenching horror but also the 'it's funny as fuck' elements of what happens with Sophia under Regent's grip -

Getting the reveal that Dragon is an AI is quite cool, as well as another look at Armsy and Dragon's almost adorable interactions. A key step on the road to Amy's final dissolution, even if we don't know it yet as a proverbial blind reader.

I hear a lot that people drop worm 'around Leviathan' and I would imagine Arc 10 here is the tail end of that 'around Leviathan' dropping.

Dropping in Arc 6 - Taylor is solidified as a villain

Dropping in arc 7 - nothing about Arc 7 stands out as a specific reason to drop

Dropping in arc 8 - End of Taylor's even slightest prospects to be a hero, the way Leviathan is a huge sea-change from the street-level stuff that might have kept people in at first

Dropping in arc 9 - the city's borderline post-apocalyptic nature is gonna fuck with a lot of people

Dropping in arc 10 - the sudden reveal that an effective 'end of the world' scenario is coming which... (Honestly, explain to me how Dinah's percentages power lets her get all that? I'm confused. Someone really needs to detail how that all works. Does Dinah get an Interlude?)

Like, Arc 10 is where the biggest element of the story is introduced, and yet, it's gonna be a huge change and a long payoff. I can see a lot of people who may have been on the fence the last few arcs going 'okay, fuck this shit I'm out'

(can someone explain to me why it's now impossible to find a gif that actually has the words you type into gifsearch? It used to actually be possible to find the actual gif, because yes, it exists I've fucking seen it. God I hate tumblr so much sometimes)

I have to think most people who made it past Arc 10 would make it deep into the s9 arc, probably at the hopes of getting out the other end to a better ending but of course NOPE (which is probably when another migration of 'fuck this shit I'm out' hits for reader s), but maybe a bit during the darkest parts in like, 14 and 15. Who knows. There's no good way to track it.

Anyway, so... Arc 10 is... it's solid. It's as good as the rest of Worm, but it doesn't stand out.

For a lot of people, the whole S9 arc from 11-15 is supposed to be very very good. I'm certainly gonna be turning it over in my head a lot as I read it, but I suspect I'm not going to enjoy it, per se.

It'll be good in the sense of well written, if only in certain senses, but I am almost certain to get very tired of Jack Slash very quickly. By all evidence he's exactly the sort of character I get exasperated and annoyed with at rapid speeds, and under normal circumstances, he'd make reading through the whole arc very hard, I imagine.

I also intend to check the earliest possible versions on the wayback machine of certain ah... high intensity chapters, as it were, because I genuinely don't trust Wildbow to have made some.... tweaks, since he started Ward. Which is probably paranoid and stupid of me, but... :shrug:

I hope this finds you in as good as spirit as i find myself in these days. It has been roughly a year since last we wrote correspondence I apologize for my absence as it poor manners to keep a not only a lady, but a good friend in waiting. Since last week spoke Chance gave me his blessing to grow the name Grimmawk outside the hush tones of fearful villages and whining vampires. Ive made my way to Port Manteau gaining passage from our mutual friend the King of the Pirates. There was something amazing about being out on the ocean again. I love my husband dearly but absence truly makes the heart grow fonder and I see him more in my thoughts and think of him in laughter aboard the fine vessels that Qui-Lon leads through your ocean. The vast blue field that lay before me once struck fear into my heart and now since making your acquaintance has left me doing nothing more the longing for my friend to escape her responsibilities and visit with me on my escapades.

We talked for hours about everything: Politics of the day, where one might find fun in the various ports of the archipelago. He urges me to visit Hyranor. A New King has taken a seat in that backwater country by the name of Lucius Pinn. He has in the past sought council from my husband in obtaining eternal life before he gained his blood soak crown. Chance turned him away simply stating

"One does not ask for power, You simply are or you are not and Lucius Pin is not."

I may seek to open trade once Mallum has an established market but i get ahead of myself. Ive gain an audience with the Royal Family using my husbands name less like a key and more akin to a battering ram to open the doors to trade. They fear him and in turn fear me. Its so strange as Chance has not killed and eaten any man who hasn't deserved it and I myself have never truly ended a life with any sort of malice but to hear the courts lords and lady's whisper you would think we were boogie men. they dare not say it to my face but my ears gather their words where their courage will not.

Do they see you as a monster or god Lumi? Chance says not to worry myself on it.

"They can not fathom anything not fearing death. We to can die but time will never be our assassin. Darkness to them is the essence of evil, but to us it is merely the absence of light."

The courts of Mallum work in black and white while most of the world is in shades of grey. Their blindness is my advantage and I plan to exploit it and maybe teach a few out there that in the absence of light, good things exist in the dark. Right soon. as far as one piece antagonists go Crocodile truly gets absolutely scooby-doo’d at unmatched levels

He immediately falls for a phone scam and from basically little garden to rainbase he doesn’t even know the strawhats are alive (and clowning towards him at incredible speed). As soon as he does, they’re in his house tearing at his walls and bringing marines into his villain lair.

He uses a literal floor trap door over a gator pit to catch them, gets phone scammed again, full scooby-doo chase scenes after Chopper through the streets while still missing him, and suddenly his prisoners have escaped his impossible cage, and his giant bananagators are dead. and Nico Robin saw it all happen.

He then spends rest of the arc complaining about those meddling kids and their dog “strawhat pirates and their weird pet” and at no point does he even know how many strawhats there are.

Like yeah he keeps having plans on top of plans to stop everything Vivi can do but also she keeps coming up with a new thing to do (Tom and Jerry ass dynamic).

Part of it is that he’s underestimating them and keeps grandstanding villain monologuing but also teens keep killing hundreds of his grand line bounty hunters and he straight up does not know what is happening.

Cause he IS trying to kill them he’s sending top assassins after them and ripping out luffy’s organs, the whole time he’s yelling HOW ARE YOU ALIVE?? DIE. as whack-a-mole Luffy keeps inventing new ways to hit him.

i feel like at some point it would end up being the twins babysitting the mortis gods (which is even more confusing for any Jedi)

i find it very funny that people keep saying that grian is going against his rebellion rule by working for the government (not necessarily incorrect) and that the dhp is going to incite a revolt because the dhp is Different from previous governing forces in that the only control grian is excising over the other hermits its annoying them as much as possible (which he does regardless).

like. hermits love corruption. they love running corrupted governments and then dismantling them violently for fun. the dhp isnt necessarily Not Corrupt, but its Not Not Corrupt either. grian gets no profits out of this. he tries to avoid doing his job in every way possible but he still ends up doing it. the dhp is just here to rectify any mistakes made during the initial hermit permit set up and help people with their permit problems.

the dhp is meant to be as soul sucking as possible, but it does still help in the end (if you can actually get grian to cooperate). He'll Do This For You, but he Won't Be Happy About It. his sole payment is how crazy it all drives you.

and while this is not NOT an unrevoltable offense (the hermits have certainly rebelled for less), this also doesnt show any outright corruption other than whatever you'd call a depressed looking man working customer service who hates you for making him do his job. which i dont think really counts. thats just what customer service does to you.
