Arbuckle Brothers was once the biggest coffee merchant in the country, and its base of operations was in Brooklyn, just under the Manhattan Bridge. It became famous for selling pre-roasted coffee treated with an egg and sugar glaze to keep it from going stale too quickly. This required a lot of sugar, so for the sake of vertical integration, the company added a massive steel framed sugar refinery to its network of factories and warehouses. Built in 1898 and in use as a refinery until 1945, the building at 10 Jay Street is now, like much of Dumbo, transitioning toward a different kind of industry.

10 Jay Street’s Crystalline Office Conversion Nears Completion in DUMBO, Brooklyn
New photos from the ODA-designed conversion of 10 Jay Street offer a first look at the interior of the boldly reimagined structure. Located on the shores of DUMBO, Brooklyn, the landmarked property was constructed in 1898 and originally served as the Arbuckle Brothers Sugar Refinery. In 1925 the building was converted to a winery, but by end of the decade, one of its masonry facades had been torn off and the exposed building fell into disrepair. source https://newyorkyimby.com/2019/03/brooklyns-crystalline-office-tower-at-10-jay-street-approaches-full-completion.html from Genesis Companies is a full-service development and construction firm enhancing communities in NY https://genesiscompanies.blogspot.com/2019/03/10-jay-streets-crystalline-office.html

An old Brooklyn sugar refinery becomes creative office spaces
A historic waterfront factory has been given a new lease on life thanks to New York-based architecture firm ODA and Triangle Assets. Located at 10 Jay Street in DUMBO, New York City, the project explores both adaptive reuse and historic preservation in its transformation of the former Arbuckle Brothers sugar refinery into creative office spaces. The sensitive renovation updates the building to modern standards while carefully preserving its history, from the restrained industrial-inspired material...

World Architecture Day
World Architecture Day is celebrated on the fIrst Monday of October. In 2019, it will be celebrated on October 7. Architecture is incredibly talented, and architects have the potential to shape all of our lives through their efforts. Also, design plays an essential role in planning for the future, sustaining population growth and tackling some social problems.“Every man’s work, whether it be literature, or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself. – Samuel Butler”
History of World Architecture Day
Created in 2005 by the UIA (Union International des Architects), World Architecture Day is a day to show appreciation for the work architects do and to celebrate some of the great global architectural works. Events are held in different locations each year, bringing architects, engineers, planners, and developers collectively to showcase their work, discuss future projects, discuss current issues and plan new business enterprises. So if you work in the same industry, why not go along and join?
How to Celebrate World Architecture Day
For those who do not function within the field of architecture, simply take a few moments out of your day to appreciate the architectural feats that you usually take for granted during your everyday life. To mark this incident, take a moment to consider the potential of the architecture – and, indeed, socially-conscious architects – to transform the lives of human beings across the globe. It may be easy to forget in the daily work, but take today to honor the great job you do, and the potential it has to better the world.
