Ayaka: A Story Of Bonds And Wounds Episode 3 Review: The Goth Ginger With A Gun
I feel like every episode, there’s an increase in the amount of crimes Jingi has done. Will I list them all? Maybe. Also, we are introduced to the Goth Ginger with a Gun and his lackeys today! To be honest, this episode was quite interesting!
This episode takes place with Yukito and Jingi taking a Marine Liner to the First Island, the most urban area of the Ayaka Islands. It’s a place flourishing with musicians, culture and food. I think it’s quite an interesting place as even Ara-Mitamas can show up in these crowded locations. I think the concept of a Marine Liner is cool in general, but I’d hate to ride one of those due to my fear of large bodies of water.
Mr. Goth Ginger with a Gun is Aka Ibuki. He was also one of Makoto’s disciples, but he’s the “evil” one. Yeah, there’s always that bad one in a group of three. It’s an anime tradition. Anyways, Ibuki has a different mindset when it comes to Ara-Mitamas. He kills them. His reason? They hurt people so he eliminates them to prevent that. He definitely lost someone important in the past, hence why he’s an anti-hero/villain of sorts. While he does use a gun to exterminate Ara-Mitamas, his main weapon is actually Black Magic, which is taboo Ley Magic that involves him having an demonic arm and consuming Ara-Mitamas. It makes me wonder if he’s the villain of this story or just the anti-hero.
One of his subordinates is Ibara, who looks so much like Sophie from Tales of Graces. She has the purple pigtails tied with white hair accessories, purple eyes, martial arts and Kana Hanazawa’s voice. I’m convinced someone in the animation studio is a Sophie fan; there’s too many similarities for it to be a mere coincidence. She’s an enigma so far. She has a scowling expression whenever Yukito shows up at her vicinity, so I wonder what’s up with that?
His other subordinates are interesting. The ones with the fancy character designs are definitely going to be important later on. The other subordinate Yukito meets is voiced by Jun Fukuyama.
Can someone at least give Yukito some gosh darn training? This kid wants to help but he’s stuck with Jingi who’s absolutely useless as a mentor. My goodness, Jingi even abandons him in the middle of the streets! Here’s another list of his crimes added and it’s only the third episode! WHEN WILL YUKITO GET SOME TRAINING?
Overall, the difference between Ibuki and the other disciples’ mindset when it comes to Ara-Mitamas is the most interesting aspect of the episode. It makes me wonder what will happen going forth. I think it’s a good conflict for Yukito to face as he’s been doing all of these Ley Mastery stuff because he was forced to. What route will he take? What do the Mitamas mean to him? I can’t wait to find out more.
Also, here’s a list of Jingi’s crimes so far:
-Drinking in front of minors
-Pushing Yukito off a bridge
-Stuffing Yukito in a magic bag.
-Throwing Yukito into an Ara-Mitama on purpose
-Littering
-Commanding his water blob to pick up his mess and not doing it himself.
-Abandoning Yukito in the middle of the streets (NEW!)

The connections between Chie and Naoto's 2nd and 3rd Personas
A lot of the 2nd and 3rd party member Personas are connected. For example: Yukiko's 2nd Persona is Amaterasu, and her 3rd Persona Sumeomikami is how Amaterasu is venerated at Ise Grand Shrine.
The combo breakers here seem to be Naoto and Chie, but it turns out Atlus has explanations for those as well. My own understanding of the mythology doesn't matter if I don't understand why they picked those names to begin with lol.
For Chie, her 2nd Persona is Suzuka Gongen, and her 3rd Persona is Haraedo no Okami. Suzuka is known as a mythical warrior woman from Mt. Suzuka, and Haraedo no Okami is the collective name for 4 purification gods who were born when Izanagi took a shower after getting home after getting divorced in Yomi.
One of the four Haraedo no Okami is named Senritsu-hime, and she is our link between Chie's 2nd and 3rd Personas. Atlus writes that Suzuka Gongen is also called Senritsu-hime. I had never heard of this before so I spent like 5 seconds Googling some time researching and at the Gion Festival in Kyoto, they have a festival float called "Mt. Suzuka" which celebrates Suzuka. But on the float, she is enshrined as Senritsu-hime. I assume there is some more backstory to why this is done, but it escapes me at the moment.
As an added bonus, Atlus notes that Senritsu-hime shares a connection to Yukiko's Amaterasu, and in some interpretations she is even Amaterasu's wild side (ara mitama).
For Naoto, her 2nd Persona is Yamato Takeru, the son of one of the Japanese emperors. Her 3rd Persona is Yamato Sumera Mikoto which looks like it is honoring the emperor and the imperial line descended from Amaterasu.
To my knowledge, Yamato Takeru did not become the next emperor because his dad was hella scared of him, so the 2nd and 3rd didn't quite seem "connected" to me. Turns out that the 3rd Persona's name comes from the title Yamato Takeru no Sumera Mikoto, which is what Yamato Takeru was called very specifically in manuscripts of traditions and other things from the Hitachi region during the 700s.
(In the English version of the game, it was shortened to Yamato Sumeragi, with Sumeragi being another way of saying this person is of the imperial line, descended from Amaterasu and whatnot.)
I found these while trying to look into whether Naoto's 3rd Persona's blonde hair was supposed to be a reference to Oscar Francois from the Rose of Versailles (her 2nd Persona, Soejima directly mentions was inspired by RoV). This is still unanswered lol.

APOLLO: "This is it! The last official question! Now, we're going to dance away from the West, and take a look at some divinities in the East for question four. You see, the Gods of Japan are said to have multiple aspects that influence how they interact with the mortal world. These are called 'Mitama'."

Celestial NATO. Wukong is in a stagnant at how to help MK after his S4 predicament))
Wukong: I don't know how to convince him he isn't bad
Anansi: well shit
Eris: well it's not like he's doing it on purpose
Coyote: it was inevitable he'd find out
Hermes: I dunno. Chaos isn't necessarily bad, look at my siblings Dionysus and Persephone. Dionysus' chaos brought people together and Persephone's name means destroyer of light yet she's in control of herself.
Loki: maybe you should ask the other gods, the ones who like you, to help.
all the other gods checking in on MK like:
Seeing how primordial chaos is such a hard thing to personify, MK is having some trouble finding common ground with other gods/divine beings.
Zagreus (think similar to the Hades game vers) ends up vibing with MK over "not supposed to exist" stuff.
Theres also a concept in japanese mythos of Nigi-mitama and Ara-mitam; aka forces of "good" and "bad" chaos that can manifest as little mini gods. MK just gets covered in little chaos imps wanting him to feel better.

Okay, so I'm pretty sure you liked one of the posts that partially talks about their backstory, but I don't think you've read anything about Karina specifically.
h/t/t/p/s://www.tumblr.com/aikoiya/721484702337351680/loz-karina-goddess-of-love-passion?source=share
This is pretty important to her as a character, but so it this:
h/t/t/p/s://www.tumblr.com/aikoiya/727413120124993536/loz-gerudo-pantheon?source=share
The thing about a lot of those scenes is that they would mostly only happen before Demise became Demise. Afterwards, he'd be more likely to actively try & r*pe her.
Like, yes. I always wanna give characters a chance, but the problem is that unless a character wants to change, then they won't.
Do not pass go & do not collect $200. The buck stops with you.
Yes, he could reform, but he doesn't want to. I see him as the type whose addicted to the chaos & the hate & the bloodshed & the carnage.
In some ways, he reminds me of the Joker. "Some people wanna watch the world burn."
As Demise, he is too far gone. However, Ganondorf, to me, acts like his Sword of Damocles.
Yes, Ganondorf is Demise's hatred reborn, his Ara Mitama, but that isn't all he is. He's also human. Meaning that he can change given the right influences.
Which means that Ganondorf is both Demise's hatred upon the world & Demise's best chance at any form of salvation.
In all honesty, I tend to take a degree of influence from Shintoism & Buddhism with him. While I don't believe in such philosophies IRL, they do give me new & interesting angles to look at characters from.
And my depiction of Demise takes a degree of influence from Susano-o. And, he's known for having been cast out of the heavens to live as a mortal (though, with the things he could pull, he must've been a mortal sorcerer).
But, the thing is, there is a shitton of evidence to suggest that the actual curse that Demise placed upon Link & Zelda isn't reincarnation. Because reincarnation already existed within their world &, according to Shinto & Buddhist philosophy, every living thing is subject to reincarnation.
It is only further proven by Demise's own words, he uses a very specific term in the original Japanese. Rin'ne, which is the Japanese term for the Hindu word Samsāra, which is the neverending cycle of life, death, & rebirth.
Now, in the English, he said was that, "my hatred will follow."
"Follow." You can't exactly follow something if it's not already in motion.
What I think is that, Demise isn't causing Link & Zelda to reincarnate. I think that that was already going to happen regardless.
I believe that Demise's actual curse isn't so much forcing them to reincarnate (which, how would he even do that; he was never stated to have power over souls), rather I believe he's attached his own hatred to their souls & essentially piggybacking off of a natural phenomenon that takes place on their earth. His curse makes it so that, whenever they are reborn, they'll experience misery in some form or fashion.
Which brings me to my next point. I think that Hylia gave up a whole lot more than what a bunch of fans believe she did.
Thing is, in a world where reincarnation is real, the only way to escape it is the give up on all worldly attachments. Which, I don't think even most deities can boast about themselves.
Especially not Hylia. She is VERY attached. So, when she became mortal, she sort of became subject to Rin'ne like any other mortal. Whether she knew or she didn't, that's a different story, but I still think it to be true.
Anyway, tangent, my bad. I see Ganondorf as being parallel to Susano-o time as a mortal.
And, you know what? He eventually makes amends. But he's only able to through living as a mortal. Or at least, that's the angle I'm going with.
And, in a way, Karina sort of represents Demise's, or Gàlondo's Kushinada-hime. Susano-o's eventual wife. (But only represent her. If she actually was Kushinada, then she'd be transformed into a comb most of the story. XD)
But, bottom line is that, according to Buddhism, it's actually not
Another interesting thing is that, while yes, the Triforce bears a surface-level resemblance to the concept of the Holy Trinity, I think it has more in common with the 3 Confucian Virtues.
And, do you know what those virtues are?
Courage
Wisdom
.
.
.
.
Benevolence.
And, do you know what Conficius believed of benevolence? It is humaneness. Or love for others.
That it starts at the home, but shouldn't stop there.
One could even argue that it is an extension of Aristole's idea that one's relationship with others reflects the relationship that we have with ourselves. In other words, how you view or treat yourself can affects how you view or treat others.
Which makes self-compassion (philautia) rather than narcissism (narcissis) very important. Because arrogance is often times a sign of someone who is secretly insecure.
And, interestingly enough, Karina is a goddess of all types of love & of healthy relationships (among other things), meaning she likely knows what she's talking about.
Anyway, back to where I was. Confucian benevolence is described as a moral sense that begins with one's own family & that strong foundation allows for such feelings to flow outward to one's community & beyond.
So, what happens when one's family or home is not strong. If the filial love isn't allowed to flourish?
Now, that by no means indicates that one can't be benevolent without a good home life or relationship with one's family. But just like how one can still learn how to read later in life, if it's nurtured early in life, it's comes easier.
But yeah, that's my logic.
Sorry for the infodumping.
Is Demise a terrible being? Yes. Do I love him?
... yes...
I really wish I could like me a hero for once. Alas, my heart is forever tormented by villains and antiheroes!
I am always here for your Universe's lore, my dear. You have incredible storytelling and information to give on WHY something should be the way it is in your version of Hyrule! I cannot wait to see more about it!
I actually have all the links you give me saved on my notes app to be able to pull them up whenever I am able to read... AKA when my brain lets me actually sit down to read.

at its halfway mark, ayaka has basically solidified itself as a) not gora's best work imo but b) perfectly watchable and reasonably entertaining
(pls show us more of brother lipstick and brother priest)
though it's a little early to tell for sure, and will depend on how the rest of the series unfolds, i feel like pacing is where ayaka really shines. to me it's never felt too rushed or too slow, taking its time to introduce the characters, their dynamics, and the world setting
just hoping the final six episodes will be enough for them to wrap everything up in a satisfying manner (unless it plans on having a second season/cour, which i certainly wouldn't mind)
the other remarkable thing about ayaka is it's done a damn good job of tackling one of the greatest challenges in fiction: writing a fourteen-year-old
(THIS IS AN ANGEL)
maybe the bar for this is so low it's buried underground, but genuinely i think yukito (who is actually fifteen but close enough) is just so well-written. they give him a downer of a past without making him a complete downer of a character, and he exhibits a mixture of hope and insecurity that feels incredibly real
i think with yukito at the center of the cast, it's easy to care about both the mundane and the magical. the mysteries of the past, the threat of the ara-mitama, and yukito's wish to make friends all feel like stakes i'm invested in—no one thing heavily outweighs the others
balance seems to be a main theme in the story itself as well, so it's quite neat that the series does balance so well from a craft standpoint too
looking forward to the second half!
#crab watches#summer 2023#ayaka#midway remarks#tl;dr some good well-paced seasonal fun (but it's no k project)

Title: Ayaka: A Story of Bonds and Wounds
Episodes: 12
Genre: fantasy, mythology
Synopsis [myanimelist]: Ten years ago, a volcanic eruption brought Japan's Ayaka Islands to the brink of destruction. Since then, Yukito Yanagi has lived with foster families on the mainland, but he has isolated himself from others following a disturbing incident. Due to the wishes of his late father, Makoto, Yukito is brought back to his birthplace on the day of his middle school graduation. There he meets Makoto's disciples and learns of the supernatural state of the region. Mysterious life forms known as Mitama inhabit the islands, but their potential to feed off humans' negative energy and turn into ferocious monsters called Ara-Mitama endangers the islanders' lives. Yukito discovers that, like his father, he is a Ley Master—a special individual with abilities akin to magic, tasked with pacifying the Ara-Mitama. As he learns to overcome his trauma and control his powers, Yukito decides to follow in his father's footsteps and become a first-rate Ley Master to protect the peace of Ayaka.

Ayaka: A Story of Bonds and Wounds Episode 2 Review: Jingi Is Still The Worst Boy
Jingi is still the worst boy of this show. He never elaborates and he was the cause of the problem today. He’s so annoying! At least, he gets comeuppance for his actions at the end, so there’s something. However, I just cannot stand him.
In Episode 1, his crimes were drinking in front of minors, throwing Yukito off of a bridge, putting him in a bag and then throwing him into an Ara-Mitama. Today’s episode has increased his crimes. He littered and told his water blob summon to pick it up, angering it in the process. When will Jingi ever become likable?
But hey, we get a few new characters today. We are introduced to Haruaki, Yako and Chataro. Haruaki is Jingi’s senior disciple and also trained under Makoto. He’s a very beautifully designed character. Look how pretty he is! He’s also a lot more reliable and powerful than Jingi. He specializes in wind magic. He also knew Yukito when he was younger. It makes me wonder if Yukito will finally get proper training if Haruaki takes him in because I am tired of Jingi’s vagueness and his refusal to elaborate on anything.
Yako and Chataro are Haruaki’s pupils. They have cute designs, so they’re probably going to be important later on. Yukito, who has been a loner most of his life, is shy around them. I hope they can become friends.
There’s also that red-haired guy from the post-credits. He appeared in the previous episode and now here too. Just who are you and what’s your role other than being the cool guy voiced by Yuichiro Umehara?
The only thing I got from this episode was that Ley Masters usually take odd jobs to earn money. Their income solely relies on job requests to pacify Ara-Mitamas. I just hope this entire show isn’t going to be a formulaic one. I need some answers on why Yukito is so special.
However, I’m still sticking around because Haruaki seems like a good character. I’m interested in him.

In fact ghosts are the “wrathful form” (ara mitama in Japanese) of ancestor gods, in the East Asian religions. In Korea they’re specifically ancestors who have no one to worship them or, due to various things about their deaths or funerary rites (or the lack thereof), can’t be properly worshiped, at least without extra rituals to calm them down first. The Buddhist festival best known to us as Japan’s O-Bon originates as an attempt to help all the dead with no descendants (or none who can worship them, since on the mainland normally only sons can perform rites for their parents—a woman helps her husband do rites for his parents).
And the gods in real paganism were pretty much just a higher tier of local elite. Nobody who has read Norse mythology would be surprised to discover that Thor is just some dude, when he’s pretty much a good-natured but hotheaded himbo in every source we have for how the Norse themselves viewed him.
Tony Stark: Yeah I’m an atheist.
A normal person in the MCU: You play beer pong with the ACTUAL THOR, GOD OF THUNDER! He owes you five bucks for pizza!
