I tried reading Appleseed Alpha despite absolutely hating the art style, but I am so sad to report I also hate the writing. Because for some reason the person who wrote Appleseed Alpha decided that it should be.... wacky.
One thing people commented on when Masamune went from writing Dominion Tank Police to Appleseed was how he went from writing a comedy series to writing a story that had a much darker tone.
Appleseed Alpha, which is not written or drawn by Masamune, feels like a wacky silly Japanese comedy anime in that particular way where it's not even funny. On top of having art I hate, AND while being an AU of the original series and what Deunan and Bri were up to before the got to Olympus city.
I also don't like the way the manga treats Bri at the start at all. Turning him into deadweight that Deunan has to lug around on the back of a truck because he doesn't have batteries when that's..... that's not how he works.... that's not how their dynamic works. That's not how they were living before Olympus. Also pretty sure Deunan would saw off her left arm before she split from Bri even IF she thought he was somewhere he could be happy but she can't function there. None of this is correct. AND it looks horrible.
Tumblr media
I would try and read Appleseed XIII but nobody has translated it (not a good sign) and I also dislike how THAT manga drew Deunan. Taking away her muscle and scowl and making her far more feminine and making her look like a teenaged girl. Idk why. To emphasize that she's the girl in the relationship and a poor innocent babe Briareos has to protecc maybe??? idk it feels very removed from what Deunan's character is supposed to be.
I'm sorry but these are not the same person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHY CAN NOBODY WRITE THESE CHARACTERS INTO A GOOD STORY????? WHY DOES LITERALLY NOBODY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING???? INCLUDING MASAMUNE?????
CAN NOBODY JUST WRITE A GOOD STORY FOR THESE CHARACTERS WHILE KEEPING THEM IN CHARACTER?????

arc fault references from Appleseed (1988) and the Appleseed manga by Masamune Shirow
Unfortunately, the YouTube link to the movie has been taken down for copyright issues. Fair enough! If you want to watch Appleseed (1988) it is also on Tubi in the English dub version.
Here's some screenshots from the movie itself, and some reference photos from the manga, Appleseed: The Promethean Challenge (Book One) and Appleseed: Promethus Unbound (Book Two). Yes, there are other volumes but I don't own them yet. <3

Sokyo X Chapter 3 is out!!!
The Sci-Fi FPS Action Epic is at it's midpoint! Chapter's 1-3 are half of the 6 part epic, so I've bundled them at my shop! ❤
Sokyo X follows ace mech pilot Senshiro and his squad as they battle the on-planet rebels. It's a heavy action series, with a tight ensemble, that fuses FPS's like Halo and Titanfall with manga like Appleseed, Biomega, Akira, and Gundam!
If that sounds even remotely interesting, I highly recommend you read the first chapter (which is online here)!

Animation Night 152: Shinji Aramaki
Hi everyone! Welcome back to Animation Night! Tonight I'm running late as ever, but I have a curiosity to present to you!
Tumblr media
CG in anime is generally speaking a dirty word. Something to be tolerated, or begrudgingly acknowledge it wasn't bad. Exceptional studios such as Orange (of Houseki no Kuni [AN97], Beastars and most recently Trigun Stampede) may escape the stigma by cleverly integrating 2D layouts, but they're surrounded by a wasteland of CG (often on Netflix) that is mechanical, awkward and just unappealing.
The style of CG in anime also tends to be designed towards imitating, or integrating with, traditional animation. Cel-shading is the order of the day, established all the way back in GitS:SAC with its tachikomas and helicopters. And generally speaking, that's a good approach! When it's not followed, as in the case of Psycho-Pass season 3, the results often look very jarring.
But there are exceptions to every rule!
We covered one of them back on Animation Night 85, with the bizarre Square-Enix project Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, which tried to apply the then-very new technique of motion capture to create something like a movie-length videogame cutscene. And this is the start of another strain of Japanese animation (perhaps not anime! depending on whether you define anime in a geographical or technical way) - the feature-length CG animated film.
Tumblr media
Let's start with Shinji Aramaki, who has spent decades trying to bring anime fans around to the idea of CGI. Aramaki got his start back in the 80s, doing mechanical design on OVAs like Megazone 23 and Bubblegum Crisis. He debuted as a director with Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 (1987), and in 1989, he became the third director of the constantly-reinventing-itself Megazone 23, following on from Ishiguro and Hirano (AN103) on Part I, and Itano and Umetsu on Part II. So, an old hand at the past way of doing things.
In the 2000s, Aramaki returned to direction jumped on CGI, directing early CG animated films such as Appleseed (2004) in cel-shaded style, following Gainax in adapting the dense Masamune Shirow manga, and its sequel Appleseed Ex Machina in 2007 which started moving the stylisation away from cel-shading. In this time, full-CG movies were still very new; Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children dropped only in 2005. Aramaki continued to drill into full-CG with a mecha series Viper's Creed and a Starship Troopers sequel film. From that you can probably get a sense of his taste: he likes mecha!
The results received mixed reviews, as often about the technology as the movies themselves. The first Appleseed inspired Toshio Suzkui of Studio Ghibli to declare it would revolutionise animation, which doesn't seem to have been entirely borne out.
Tumblr media
Still, when Toei decided to do a new CG adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's renowned Space Pirate Captain Harlock (Animation Night 146), famously first taken on by Rintaro, I suppose Aramaki must have seemed a natural choice. If Appleseed had been made on the cheap, Harlock was the opposite, costing 3 billion yen as the most expensive Japanese CG film (and maybe animated film?) evaaaa, surpassing CG-heavy megaprojects like Eva 3.0+1.0, Otomo's Steamboy and In This Corner of the World. Toei clearly had big ambitions for the return of Harlock.
So. The style of this Harlock resembles more closely videogame cutscenes, or the films of Square Enix's Visual Works, than Aramaki's past films: realistic materials and lighting, only mildly stylised character designs. In contrast to the 'aliens everywhere' maximalism of the original Leijiverse, this film puts a more antiheroic Harlock in conflict with a human government, in the context of space colonists attempting to resettle Earth and fighting a big old war over it. Which isn't to say there's a shortage of alien superweapons, dark matter, and plans to reset the entire universe. It sounds pretty wild.
Following Harlock, Aramaki would continue to direct CG, including a cool take on an Eva launching for a short film for the Animator Expo, and then perhaps his most infamous creation: a sequel to GitS SAC, in SAC 2045, which brought in a plasticy CG style in place of the beloved traditional animation that proved... divisive at best. But this didn't stop him; his most recent work is a Blade Runner TV series, titled Black Lotus.
Tumblr media
Alongside that, he continued to work on adapting Appleseed, rebooting the story yet again with Appleseed α in 2014 with CG studio Sola Digital Arts - indeed, Sola is pretty much Aramaki's studio, with almost all of their works directed by him.
Shirow's series, a predecessor to Ghost in the Shell, deserves a better introduction than I can write tonight - but it's the territory you'd expect: post-apocalyptic cyborgs in a bleak world. Far more than the others, α - which is something of a prequel, telling how the main characters came to the city where the story is set - was highly praised for its exceptionally detailed animation and mocap, though not so much its plot.
I admit, I'm taking a big chance on both these films. Neither managed to make much impact on release, but I'm definitely curious to see this anime that isn't 'anime'. (My original plan was to make this a story about a specific CG studio, but I decided it would be better to put the Final Fantasy films side by side on a night when I can write a proper history of FinFan!)
Animation Night 152 is going live now at twitch.tv/canmom. I'd love to see you there!

What I Watched This Week – 11/5 – 11/11
Tumblr media
Pluto – I came to this without ever reading or watching any Astro Boy or other Tezuka manga, and I’ve never read or watched anything by Naoki Urasawa, but I got into this just fine without ever feeling like I was missing a prerequisite or something. I understand that it’s a reimagining of the Astro Boy manga about a lifelike boy robot named Atom, who, in this story, gets caught up in a series of murders involving other advanced robots and several humans who were instrumental in developing robot technology or in the movement to give robots civil rights. Most of the story centers on the police investigator named Gesicht, who is a robot himself, as he travels around the world meeting with other robots and scientists he suspects will be future targets, unravelling a giant world-altering plot in the process.
The story is paced well, dishing out bits of background on the world and the characters slowly as the investigation plods along, and the animation was usually very good, with a few excellent moments that made perfect use of lighting or action to be particularly moving. My one complaint would be the way the female characters were few and limited to being wives and relatives of the male characters. The male characters were entirely responsible for driving the action, whether that was through fighting or being a brilliant scientist, while the female characters were restricted to having feelings about what was happening. Some of that is due to the source material, I’m sure, but the choice to retain this gender divide in a reimagining is thoughtless at best. 8/10
Tumblr media
Nichijou – This is my second try at watching this series, as I started it years ago and turned it off in the middle of one of the Hakase and Nano skits early in the series and never went back. I don’t live under a rock, so I keep seeing all the clips from this show that are objectively hilarious and gorgeously animated, so I gave it another go. After watching the whole thing this time, it’s just a case of feast or famine. Pretty much all of the skits involving the kids from the school are incredibly funny, and any time Hakase is on screen being a tiny sociopath in a voice that tests the range of sounds the human ear can register without bleeding, the show is insufferable. Luckily, more of the show involves the school cast than the Shinonome household, so it’s a good enough time. 7/10
Tumblr media
Appleseed – I feel like I’ve seen this 80’s OVA talked about over the years, but after watching it, I’m not sure why this would have been much of a hit for anyone. It’s set in the aftermath of World War III, with what’s left of humanity living in a utopian city run by genetically engineered humans called “bioroids”, and follows a human woman and her cyborg partner on the police force as they track down a terrorist. The story generally felt underdeveloped, like it was speeding through the plot without stopping to take the time to flesh out character motivations and make sure things made sense. By the end of the runtime, I’m not sure who I should have been rooting for, and the conclusion felt anticlimactic. 6/10

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unieke uitgave
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doorbraak
Those were the days 🥳.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goed geprobeerd
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Illustrated Classics

ESWAT's FINEST ON FULL DISPLAY -- A PIECE FOR EVERY OCCASION.
PIC INFO: Mega spotlight on a character bio & pin-up of "Extra-Special Weapons and Tactics" member Deunan Knute (with her arsenal), artwork & text by Masamune Shirow, from the cyberpunk manga series "Appleseed" (1985-'89).
""Appleseed is set 130 years in the future, so, as I have written elsewhere, Deunan is a complex mix of several races. As far as I can recall, however, I've never made her of Japanese descent. Anyway, who cares? Sorry, but her measurements are a secret."

The Movie: Divine Realm of the Round Table - Camelot).
GHOST IN THE SHELL SAC_2045
Tumblr media
THE SEVEN DEADLY SIN: GRUDGE OF EDINBURGH
youtube
La regia è affidata a Bob Shirahata (Hetalia World Series), sotto la supervisione di Noriyuki Abe (The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky), mentre della sceneggiatura si sta occupando Rintaro Ikeda (The Seven Deadly Sins: Il giudizio del drago).
EXCEPTION
Tumblr media
AGGRETSUKO
youtube
VAMPIRE IN THE GARDEN
Tumblr media
KOTARO LIVES ALONE
youtube
THE ORBITAL CHILDREN
youtube

Oof! I have a few faves but my top 3 fave films of all time has got to be:
1. Matilda
Tumblr media
Cuz I know that feeling of being the odd one out in my family growing up...but things are better now.
Enjoyed both the book and the film.
2. Napoleon Dynamite
Tumblr media
...'cuz it's just so dumb it's funny!
Whenever I hear the song, "The Rose" by Amanda McBroom I cannot help but think of the Happy Hands Club scene in the film and will literally do the hand motions. My sister and I watched Studio Ghibli's "Only Yesterday" last Sunday and the ending song was literally the song mentioned above and the two of us CRACKED UP so hard because it will forever reminded us of Napoleon Dynamite. 😆
3. Appleseed (both the 2004 film and Ex Machina):
Tumblr media
I have yet to watch the original 80's OVA...read the manga years ago! My fave anime films after reading about it on Newtype USA (Yes! Newtype used to be in English until they ceased publications in 2009-ish...one of my favorite anime mags too).
It's also one of Masamune Shirow's most criminally underrated series, it wasn't as popular as Ghost in the Shell... 😭
Also, Deunan Knute was my first anime waifu 😘💕
'cuz I dreamed of a lady who's has short blonde hair, has beauty and grace yet can be ultra fierce and protective too!
Thank you for making the time to get to know me!

The official website for Ghost in The Shell SAC_2045, the latest installment from the anime series based on Masamune Shirow's sci-fi action manga, announced today that a compilation film based on its first season is set to be released in 2021. The film edition will be reconstructed with some newly-created scenes.

The 12-episode first season of the 3DCG series was streamed on Netflix worldwide (except China mainland) in April  2020, and the second season has already been in the works. Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series) and Shinji Aramaki (APPLESEED, Starship Troopers: Invasion) have worked as co-directors at Production I.G and SOLA DIGITAL ARTS.
    Message from Kenji Kamiyama:
"I have always edited a compilation of my own works by myself, but this time, for the first time, I entrusted the compilation to another creator. I wanted to know how SAC_2045 would look from someone else's perspective. Even for those who have already watched Season 1, they may find a different interpretation. Can't wait for the release!"
    Message from Shinji Aramaki:
"I'm Aramaki, and I'm currently working on Season 2 with Director Kamiyama, since Season 1 was streamed last year. I'm happy to hear that Season 1 will be released as a compilation film. What kind of compilation will be made of that story? I actually don't know yet (laughs). Please look forward to it. I'm looking forward to it too!"
