Day 13: Flowers

Raven misses his brother more than he lets on.

I like the idea that Ungurth’s grave gets a statue, to reflect Irene’s statue. Laurance planted some flowers and vines around it to make it personal.

I'm a firm believer that Aphmau in MCD didn't have very healthy relationships with Garroth, Laurance, or Aaron (🤢🤮/hj)

Aphmau at the start of the original MCD series was someone completely different from the person she developed into by the end of it. She went from being this fun and curious person to someone way more mature and downcast. This is an understandable progression given the circumstances of her life. She shows up at a village with basically no knowledge of the world she's in and she decides to help the people of the village maintain it and make it flourish but as time goes on and she learns that the reality of the world she's in isn't kind to the majority of people and that if she wants to keep the people she knows and loves safe then she's going to have to do things that are dangerous and risk her life for that cause and she's willing to do so. And as time goes on and the people in the village gain sentience, especially Garroth because he's one of the only people she's actually able to depend on things get harder because they have their own personalities and lives that she has to learn about and take interest in.

Then she meets Laurance who isn't someone she's very fond of when she first meets him but when she needs help the most she knows that she can trust him to be there for her. When Laurance goes to the Nether she doesn't feel like she's failed a friend though. She actually doesn't care too much about it and all in all she doesn't exactly think about him a lot, of course she's concerned and thinks about going in the Nether to get him back she's passive in him being trapped there and trying to get him back. When it becomes a problem for her (When she saw him outside the old Lord's house with Levin) that's when she starts becoming more concerned because it could interfere with her life in a way she didn't expect. When Laurance escapes the Nether with the help of Ungurth and she sits with him I still don't see their relationship being friends exactly, it's more like she's talking to someone who's a subject of hers and who isn't really a person in the way that she perceives herself to be.

This continues until practically the end of season 1. Back to Garroth he's someone Aphmau can ally herself with but there's nothing in season 1 that really shows she thinks much of him even though he obviously has feelings for her. Then when he thinks he sees her and Laurance kissing in the woods, instead of supporting the fact that she might have found someone she loved (even though that was just an illusion) he goes ballistic. He stands with Zane during the war instead of the village he promised to protect with his life over petty jealousy, it takes Laurance to snap him out of it and by that time it's already too late and 15 years had already passed in the Overworld.

The village of Phoenix Drop had become a ruin and everyone was displaced as a result of Garroth not being able to face Aphmau and communicate with her. On the bright side this is now a time where Aphmau comes to see Laurance as a friend and someone she is able to find comfort in. But Aphmau is continuously screwed over in season 2, she's missed her children growing up and Phoenix Drop, a place that she put her life into is destroyed. Her life's work is gone and it was all for nothing, her old friends are scattered all over the region and she doesn't know what became of them. The worst part is she can't tell anybody about all of her worries. She has a whole group of people that have gone through the same thing as her but they have family and/or people who they can turn to.

Aphmau was someone in a place of power unlike most of the group that went to Irene's dimension and for her 15 years was only 15 minutes so she can't help but see them as people she needs to protect and help. This was not a natural sequence of events or her passing on her duties to Levin when he came of age this was something completely unexpected and world shattering for her. Nobody is able to sympathize with her except for Dante and Aaron. The problem with Dante is that he was going through his own problems shouldering protecting the entire village himself since the rest of the guards were basically young adults or teenagers and he needed someone to lean on. The person who became this was Aphmau because she was his old Lord and the person he knew and loved for over a decade despite her disappearance. Aaron was someone closed off but he knew exactly what he was feeling because he had felt the exact same way. That is ultimately why he was someone who could listen to her and help ease her fears. He wasn't a person who was great at comforting her but he could rationalize and offer suggestions based on his own experience of being a Lord.

Imo the relationship between the two of them should have stayed teacher and student but honestly even though they "got together" for a night in the woods that should've just been a one night stand I understand that there was a mutual respect between them but that wasn't love. They weren't a good pair at all because Aaron was someone with major problems and Aphmau kept crossing lines with him (I just really hate Aaron you guys 🗣️🔥🔥) . Back to their one night stand thing Laurance throws a tantrum when he finds out she's pregnant and releases TWO criminals that tried killing her and her sons and then he fled to the Nether to start a rebellion. The point is they might have worked out in early to mid season 2 but as time went on and Laurance was starting to feel the pull of a Shadow Knight and Aphmau needed stability and a partner she could rely on for that was when things started to go downhill (I actually really liked the tragic lover dynamic but I hated that pregnancy was the thing used to progress the story and make Laurance give in to the Shadow Knight pull. There were so many other ways to do it and it felt lazy because every single series is all Aaron, Aaron, Aaron give us a break from Jason's fursona for like 5 minutes please ☹️🔫)

Garroth stepped up and did what he should've done in the first place and took the time he needed but he didn't actively try and participate in Aphmau's murder which is a step up from last time. Then he took on the role of father figure for the two babies blah blah blah I'm getting bored. Anyways Aphmau should've stayed alone or found another dude to get with if all the boys stayed the same, Aaron sucked butt and MCD was ruined the second he was introduced and there was no hope for positive character growth when he came along because Jesson is notorious for making other love interests awful to make up for Aaron being dookie and to make him look better, that's all.

Also I loved Laurance so much in MCD, even though I said stuff about him he was a good character and I loved MCD mwah mwah

MCD!Aaron Lycan - Baby

It wasn’t fair.  Watching them, day after day, and each time there was a little less space between them.  You’d known him so much longer and yet, he chose your baby sister over you.  You’d been trying so hard to get him to like you, for years now.  And she did it effortlessly.

You saw Aphmau conversing with Lucinda, meaning this was your chance to spend time with Aaron.  You walked over to him and sat beside him on a bench.  “I guess Travis messed up,” you said with a sigh.

Aaron just nodded silently.  He kept his eyes forward, paying no attention to you at all.

“I don’t know what’s gonna happen now,” you whispered.  You looked all around, and said, “Where are we?”

He didn’t respond to you, instead he turned his head towards the sound of a splash, and chuckled lightly when he saw Aphmau keeping herself afloat in the water, yelling something to Lucinda.

Your heart began to hurt, and you stood up.  If that was what it took to get his attention, so be it.  You ran over to the part of the ship where your sister had just jumped off, and you did a flip in the air as you jumped off the side of the ship.

“Aw yeah!” Aphmau said, laughing and swimming to be right beside you.  “See Lucinda, even y/n is coming for a swim!”

You looked over to Aaron, but he was looking away. You sighed and looked over at Aphmau.  “What are we doing, anyway?”

She smiles at you.  “Exploring!  Come on, we’ll meet up with everyone on shore.”  She led you over to the shore, and you dried off on the sand before stepping onto the dirt.

Soon Laurence, Chad, Katelyn, Vylad, and Aaron had joined you.  You were splitting up into two teams, one of three and one of four.  It was Katelyn, Vylad, and Chad as team one, and yourself, Aphmau, Aaron, and Laurence as team two.

Laurence and Aphmau went ahead, and you took the opportunity to talk to Aaron.  You had no idea what to say, though, so you walked in silence for a while.

“Why did you jump in?” Aaron finally asked you.

Your heart jumped.  You couldn’t tell him it was to get his attention.  “I-I thought Aph got pushed,” you said.  Yeah, yeah that’s a good excuse.  “I was going to save her.”

He nodded.  He opened his mouth to say something else, but stopped when a loud scream rang out.

“Laurence!” you said, running towards the source of the sound.  You saw Aphmau looking down in a hole, and saw Laurence at the bottom of it.

“I’m going down,” Aphmau said.

“Nope,” Aaron said.  “No way.”

“I’ll do it,” you said, preparing yourself for the jump.

He put his arm out in front of you.  “Nope.  Not having either of you get hurt.”

You sighed heavily, though the little gesture did mean a lot.  “We can’t just leave him.”

“There’s an exit,” he said.

Aphmau looked down into the hole.  “It’s not a long fall.”

You looked at her, then down at Laurence.  “I’m going.”  You weren’t going to leave your friend down there alone.  “There’s four of us, we can go two and two.”  Before anyone could object, you made the jump.  As you tried to regain your balance, Laurence pulled you aside, and you heard two thumps behind you.  You turned around to see Aaron and Aphmau had come too.

“I’m gonna explore a bit,” you said.  You walked in the uphill direction of the cave, and Laurence followed right behind you as Aaron and Aphmau went the other way.  You noticed a light coming from a cavern, and stepped towards it with your eyes wide.  “Guys!” you yelled.

Aaron and Aphmau were shortly right beside you, and soon enough you were all looking into the wyvern nest.  Aphmau gasped as one flew in.

“Raven!” she called out, and ran over to embrace the wyvern.

You looked at Aaron.  “She can communicate with them?”

He nodded slightly, and you returned your attention to your sister.  

“Aphmau, know I am not fond of these wyverns for exiling Ungurth,” Laurence said.  “Speak with them at your will. He turned and walked away.

You knew you should go after him.  You really did, but something told you to stay put.  The wyvern moved and Aphmau followed, you and Aaron right behind.  Your heart nearly stopped when you saw a human baby laying in the hay.

You jumped down and picked up the baby, ripping off your jacket and bundling her in it.  “She must be freezing,” you said, and you held the baby to your chest.  “Irene, she’s freezing.”

“y/n!” Laurence yelled, running over to you.  “Is that a...baby?”

“Yes,” Aaron replied for you.  “And she needs to eat.  There’s a cow over there.”

“Raven says they brought that cow for the baby,” Aphmau said.  “But it’s scared.”

Laurence nodded.  “I got this.”  He went over to the cow.

You leaned against a rock, cradling the baby in your arms.  Aaron stood beside you, and a smile graced his face.

“I always wondered what you’d look like as a mother,” he said with a chuckle.  He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a (your favorite color) rose.  “I was gonna give this to you later...I found it on the island.  I remember you said this is your favorite color.”  You blushed as he brushed your hair out of your face, gently placing the flower behind your ear.  “I’m sorry I’ve been quiet.”

You smiled at him.  “Don’t worry about it.”

“Seeing you right now, I just...I couldn’t help myself.  y/n, I’m in love with you.”

Your heart began beating out of your chest.  It was actually happening.  You smiled at him and quietly whispered, “I love you too.”

He smiled.  “When you aren’t holding a baby...I’m going to give you a very passionate kiss.”

You laughed lightly.  “I’ll be waiting for that, then.”

Day 26: At a cost

It doesn’t matter. Ungurth would choose it a thousand times more if it meant saving him.

More stuff from Laurance’s backstory!

Short version: Young Laurance and Ungurth are both stuck in/around Meteli due to leg injuries, and Laurance is hiding Ungurth with the help of Cadenza from poachers who are after him.

At this point, they’ve both healed enough to explore the woods. Laurance figured the hunters would have moved on, but they’re spotted by a scout who alerts the other hunters. They ambush Laurance and Ungurth, but Laurance is scrappier than they expected and Ungurth is a fucking Wyvern, so they hold their own against them. Honestly Ungurth could kill them all pretty easily. But one of the hunters, piecing together that Ungurth is protecting Laurance, takes his attention off of him and tries to take a shot at Laurance. Ungurth is able to knock him away and his shot misses, but realizing that Laurance is in serious danger decides to flee. He picks up Laurance by his hood and takes off, revealing that his leg is fully healed and he’s able to fly again. He perches in a nearby tree out of range of the hunters crossbows.

Laurance, who just got picked up like a kitten, experienced flight for the first time, and is now balanced on a tree limb several stories in the air, is a bit overwhelmed. Ungurth holds him close to steady him, snarling fiercely at the hunters staring up at them from the ground.

I am so normal about wyverns.

Like the series had, up to that point, been pretty low fantasy. Magic existed but seemed pretty rare, nonhumans existed but we’re still entirely human in their mannerisms, and monsters never seemed to be a problem. Then suddenly BAM! Giant dimension-hopping talking dragon thing!

I love the Wyverns, Ungurth especially, so much. Even if they didn’t have much to do I was so happy anytime they were on screen. But unfortunately, baby me never had the dragon drawing phase that everyone else seems to have had. So even if I loved them, any time I tried to draw them it would be a total disaster. But now Ive decided to finally buckle down, grab a ton of references, and have a proper go at designing my version of the Wyverns. So here’s a page devoted to Ungurth.

Design thought process and individuals:

I wanted to stay somewhat true to the original model, so even if a traditional six limbed dragon would’ve been easier I challenged myself to stick to the four limbed design. The wings are largely based on pterosaurs, so wyverns still have somewhat functional claws on their wings. They can walk on two legs like birds, or hunch over and walk on all fours, especially common when threatened. They have more of a beak than a snout, and don’t have any teeth, though their beaks are sharp enough and their jaws strong enough to do significant damage. Since their front arms are mostly devoted to flight, the front claws are weak, and are more used to grip than attack. But their hind legs are very powerful. They have a ridged plate on their head that is used for defense, and modified scales on the sides of their heads to help funnel sound, and are also used for communication.

Most of the pieces are tied to Laurance’s backstory, which I’ll save for another time. But just to make things clear green text is Laurance, blue text is Cadenza.

Day 7: In another life

When you’re immortal dimension-hopping draconic beings in service to a powerful and holy figure.

And then you travel to a slice-of-life universe and you’re literally just normal pets.
