Very late to the conversation abt s4, but as a Noir girlie, I feel like this must be said 😤

(SPOILERS BELOW)

I did NOT like how there was little to no substantial development surrounding Noir this season. Instead, they reduced my mans into a comic relief character, which don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy sometimes, but don’t we already…. cough cough have the deep for that? cough

Like they could’ve done something so much more impactful with the og Noir, but noooOOO kripke just HAD to kill him off, and for what? Just for a few little scattered jokes here and there? Meanwhile this entire season has been an absolute uncoordinated mess???? ((Ik Kripke was planning to kill off Noir since the very beginning, but WHY?? 😭

I can see where they might be heading with a potential showdown between Noir II and Soldier Boy in S5, maybe mirroring the disfigurement of the og Noir or sth? But the way they've been building up to that so far just doesn't feel very compelling or efficient to me personally. it just feels they’ll land another lame “haha” moment for the audience and call it a day when it comes to that point

Impactful story arc? Nope- thrown straight outta the window

and yes I know Noir wasn’t even a primary character to the storyline in the first place, so it’s not like the end of the world or anything. Just take this as a nonsensical rant from a bitter Noir stan 🤠

also for those of you who care i finally finished reading Harrow!!!

it only took me nearly a year bc my brain could simply not handle it but oh my gOD.

I plan on doing a gideon reread and then a Harrow audiobook read bc that really helped last year when I first read gideon and tbh the first half? 1/3? Of Harrow is truly a blur bc I started it months and months ago and only finished it a few weeks ago

but anyway just know I <3 my little femme bone gremlin and also gideon is the love of my life etc etc

taking a sort of intense sci-fi fantasy break and starting An Island Princess Starts a Scandal rn bc apparently it’s a stunning sapphic romance and ugh I need that in my life

I hate this attitude so much! This argument is stolen from disability and poc activists who have been asking for a long time for people playing disabled characters or characters from a particular ethnic background to actually be from these groups. You'll notice this actually makes total sense!

While not having scarjo play your poc is a good starting point, casting a chinese actor to play a vietnamese character because "its close enough for the white people in the audience" is still a problem. And casting accurately solves many many problems. Eg when your writer/costumer/set designer messes up the actor knows and corrections can be made. When they need to act vietnamese can.

Same goes for disability. So many autistic people hate shows about us because allistics are really bad at playing us! They can do stereotypes and act kooky enough to satisfy allistic audiences but like in the above example that means using us as objects while ignoring us as part of the audience. You have any idea how often we see mobility aids used dangerously wrong on tv? Or how often characters are supposed to have an illness but they don't have any of the symptoms! A disabled actor has symptoms! Their aids are real! And when things are depicted as real then we exist

But we don't have these same reasons for queer characters. Sure there is a queer culture, but crucially not all queer people are part of the community. There is no way to act queer the way there is to act muslim or italian, because the only thing we all have in common is being different. We come from everywhere, and we act every way. Some of us try to fit in with our communities of origin, some of us try to fit into the queer community. Neither way is right or wrong. Anyone can be queer and we can be anyone.

There are times when casting queer actors might make sense, like for a visibly trans character, but if they're not visibly trans cis people can do that. And I always like it when queer people are in things because give us money, but we can be anyone so anyone can be us

There’s been debate about whether poems with references to pop culture are able to hold originality since they rely on the audience having the context needed to understand the poem…

But isn’t originality based on what is able to be separated from the rest and regarded as something new entirely?

I ask this question today to the jury in defense of my client, Mr. Kid Galaxy Sonic Plush, who has been debunked from his original title of Real Merchandise in favor of his now restrictive title of Bootlegged Sonic Plush.

Mr. KG Sonic’s attempt to imitate the revered Sega Toy Sonic X Plush has resulted in his manufacturing to the masses at a cheaper price for those unable to pay a ludicrous price of 100+ dollars for a beloved plush.

I hear those in the back shout about the plethora of sonic plushes and countless iterations of other plushes that mirror His likeness and are within a reasonable price. I rebuttal their cries with this:

KG Sonic is the superior to all of these, not only because of his cheap price, but in his near accurate imitation of the Sonic X Plush licensed by Sega Toys themselves.

His hands may be positioned differently, and his quills may be too short; his eyes may seem flimsy and there may not be any stuffing at all in his legs. But in his recreation of the aforementioned Sonic X Plush, I reiterate the beginning of my statement.

Originality, while based off of a product already created and well-loved, can still be attained through use of imitation and allusion to the past. It is in how the original product is constructed and delivered that it is able to maintain authenticity.

Poems with the use of allusions to the artists of their time or the Hobbit are able to stay original in that not many poets refuse to include pop culture. Therefore it is this usage that is able to grant them originality.

Bootleg sonic plushes, created to make a quick buck, but manage to stay within the likeness of the plush they copy off of, are original in the way that none of the more RARE and ONE OF A KIND are able to become. They may not be rare in quantity, but they are in quality. And I fear, my honored jury, that I will never find my client, Kid’s Galaxy Sonic Plush.

My firmest TSC take will always be that Jace should have gone by Lightwood in the end. I get that him being a Herondale makes sense in the grand scheme of the TSC universe (him, Will, James, Kit, and Edmund are all birds of a feather), but his personal arc is far more dependent on the family who raised him. Learning about his biological parents is of course important to him, but calling himself a Herondale doesn't actually feel like a resolution to his identity crisis. TMI is all about rejecting the hatred handed down from previous generations, which is why neither Clary nor Jace identify as Morgensterns. While Stephen was nowhere near as bad as Valentine, he also did even less to shape Jace into his adult self. Robert and Maryse on the other hand actually raised him for half his life, and Alec Isabelle and Max grew up alongside him as his siblings. He's a Lightwood in every way that matters, I don't get why Jace (in-universe) would choose to identify himself as a Herondale when there's nothing tying him to that family but blood spilled before he was born.

this is my tedtalk now

i unfortunately don’t have a name for it yet 😭. i honestly don’t have many ideas set in stone for this, it was just a little guy i drew up that was inspired by something i was watching. i am open to name suggestions tho!

as for a backstory, what i currently have is his parents sold him off when he was a toddler to a group of human scientist studying something related to mobians (a really funny way of saying “we want to run unethical experiments on your kid, you cool with that?”) for a large sum of money. they didn’t want their mutated fox kit, but this group did so why not just give him up? and for that much money, it wasn’t a hard choice

so no, he did not know sonic beforehand. speaking of the blue hog, sonic does know amy and knuckles and the restoration is still a thing in this au. how? idk, i just want it like that. it’s mostly there because sonic leaves tails with the restoration while they try to figure out what to do with the kid. sonic does end up taking him in, he just needs to find a permanent place to live first

the implants are what i’m stuck on. all i know rn is that they artificially enhance his intelligence, speed, strength, hearing, and durability. i’m debating giving him another ability (sorta something like surge and kit’s abilities but not something elemental) but idk.

maybe i have this more planned out than i thought- anyway yeah traumatized, clingy little guy who will bite if provoked 🫶 love him. also i did end up getting rid of the blue markings on his design so uhhhhh yeah. im still wondering if i should add more robotic bits and implants on him

Truthfully? I think he's more of a Chaotic Neutral :3

He's literally Death, so he has a job that nobody is safe from (so he's basically Neutral by default)

However, he is not entirely as should be, given that he has not only a personality, but also, morals. Meaning there is something that he can't truly fulfill while being Death.

Be fair.

Since he LITERALLY hunted down a cat that didn't appreciate his lives despite the fact that it was against the rules, because he decided that he would rather do things his way instead of just let this gato get away with wasting his 8 lives.

Death is a concept. An end to life. An inevitable result from the age and wear and tear of our life. It's not supposed to have feelings like spite or frustration, and definitely not anything like an appreciation for the short amount of time in the universe that is life. It's only an ending, it's not supposed to be (or act) like a person. But it does. He does. He has those feelings anyways. And that, in and of itself, can be considered as "rule-breaking" in a way.

But despite all of that, he still does his job.

And although he isn't supposed to, he chooses to do his job incorrectly. Simply because he wanted to and felt like it was deserved. He would've come for Puss eventually, but took it upon himself to just end his life early anyways, despite DEFINITELY knowing that it wouldn't have mattered in the end. But it did matter. To HIM, it mattered enough for him to keep breaking rules even further, to break the routine for this one fucking guy who invalidated life so much that Death itself thought it would be just to teach him a lesson. And when that lesson is finally learned, although sad that the fun has ended and the game is over, Death goes back to his regular routine once more.

This begs the question: Is Puss not the first one? Is he simply one of the many hunts Death has taken in his pursuit of those who waste their lives? If that is the case...Death is certainly an unpredictable force of nature through and through.

Sounds pretty much like Chaotic Neutral behavior to me XD

The thing that makes Death a GREAT villain/antagonist is that he’s a force of nature that got upset and started behaving incorrectly.

His motivation is to kill Puss for being a cocky shit. Someone having 9 lives is ridiculous on its own but to have someone waste them like Puss does is just offensive, so Death stepped in to take his last life early for funsies. That’s how pissed off Death was, and he explains it very clearly in the crystal caverns scene.

Death is a foil to Puss. Yeah, he’s only there to kill Puss. That’s the point. He’s not a person, he’s literally Death. He’s the light at the end of the tunnel for Puss, but he’s running at him. He’s the one that forces Puss to change. He’s the one that makes his journey harder. The single only reason why getting that wish even matters is because Death forced it to matter.

He’s vindictive, cruel, and spiteful. That’s different from just being plain evil.   Him having rules he begrudgingly follows makes his “defeat” interesting. He can kill Puss at any time. Heck, he could slaughter everyone at the end. But he doesn’t. He’s unpredictable.

Also, the main job of an antagonist is to show the protagonist’s development. That’s why it’s called “antagonist” - they antagonize. Every one of Puss’ encounters with Death are direct catalysts to his character growth.This movie doesn’t work without him.

He’s a fantastic antagonist straight from a classic storybook.

strange take but to me light is kinda mouse/rat coded

in the cat and mouse chase between him and L hes near always the one whos escaping L's grasp where as L more so hovers right above him waiting for the perfect moment to strike

the cat in this scenario being L and the mouse being light as L works more to capture and light works more to outmaneuver

L knows what light is from nearly the start and hes only waiting for the moment light can be held as kira with solid evidence

light is less sure but does his best to outsmart L in anyway he can, first in the scene with Lind L taylor and soon after with how he planned to get the police force to turn against him

though light does have some offensive attacks on L and vice versa, it felt like the majority of the time light was the one who was doing the running. L hardly ever needed to hide from light or try to shake him off the same way light does for L.

this also brings to mind the rat in the zodiac where despite the odds against it the rat still ends up winning the race through its ability to use its situation to its advantage to trick and evade as it pushes itself up to first place using the other animals to help itself

getting back into reading the edas i can't stop thinking abt how a lot of people say "eight is a different character in his disparate media (edas, comics, big finish) but that just... isn't really true, at least for me.

i read late 90s books and can hear paul mcgann like listening to a 2000s or even 2010s audio story.

people will also bring up his demeanor and whatnot and like yeah! characters shift across their lives! eight was a bit more actionable and brusque then went through the war in heaven. he was mellowed by the time he met charley. you can listen to him shift and grow and change across his big finish stories as well. all the while he's been this soft, aloof, silly, witty, romantic (in the classical sense), loveable goof with a serious duty, and so on.

and honestly that's way cooler!! because those sources had a singular movie to pull from for characterization (by and large; idk how much cross-polination there was of writers between the series) and mcgann's stellar performance. he came in, absolutely slayed in 90 minutes, and that one performance is carrying the character to this day and that's incredibly cool.

ANYWAYS tee hee read the edas, listen to big finish, etc etc even by you know what if necessary, paul mcgann slays now and forever ty for coming to my tedtalk

I try to make character interactions besides the already established crew (robo crew, the Kagami sibs with Kaneko, Kyouya, and Tsuki, Sail crew (Chiha, Tetsuya, and Ua), etc etc) but it ain't clicking.....
