getting on twitter for the first time in weeks only to be reminded why I don't go on there much in the first place

Imagine if Stacey and Neil actually met in high school except they didn’t go to the same school: they met through Kid Chameleon.

One night, Scott brings Stacey to one of their shows and it just so happens that Stephanie (or Steph) brought Neil with her.

Since they were both the youngest people there (Neil’s 17, Stacey’s 16 till December), they decided to talk to each other and they hit it off.

Stacey also develops a bit of a crush on Neil and would always ask Scott if Steph was going to bring her brother with her again, as she wanted to see him and didn’t know if there was another way.

Then one morning, she discovers that they take the same TTC bus and from then on they talk before and after school and become sorta friends. At this point, Neil also starts developing a crush on her.

Things stayed like that for about two months until Neil and his mom moved places (as I agree with the headcanon that the Nordegraf siblings have divorced parents) so they would no longer take the same bus in the morning or after school. They still have Kid Chameleon shows to meet up and talk at right? Ha ha wrong cause at New Years, the famous break up between Scott and Envy happens which in turn, also breaks up the band.

That whole break up was the nail in the coffin that strained Neil and Stacey’s kinda friendship. They didn’t have the others phone number cause they were both too shy to ask and also cause they both kept forgetting.

There also wasn’t a whole ton of opportunities to ask either of their siblings for their phone numbers so they just gave up and went on with their lives.

But then why didn’t they recognize the other in the like three times there were in the same room together? Easy answer: Stacey was distracted by everything around her to even notice Neil, who in turn, was slowly disappearing into the crowd and fully did by the time it was Lisa’s going away dinner.

So when they see each other again properly at the Chaos Theater, something clicks and they fall back into where they once were two years ago. To them it felt like a decade, but no it was just two years. They catch up on what they missed in the others lives on the walk home.

After that these dorks start dating cause the feelings were still there, just buried deep, left dormant, and forgotten. They came back but slightly different as people change.

Something I've noticed the gender binary rearing its ugly head in, paradoxical as it may seem, is nonbinary/trans headcanons.

What I mean is — more often than not, I've noticed (usually cis) people assigning nonbinary or trans headcanons to characters who don't conform to their assigned gender. Canonically female characters with short hair or stereotypically "masculine" interests (e.g. engineering, video games, sports) are often seen as nonbinary and definitely they/them. Similarly, canonically male characters with stereotypically "feminine" personality traits (e.g. sweet, sensitive, caring) are seen as definitely transfem.

Now before anyone gets mad: There is NOTHING WRONG with nonbinary or trans headcanons. They are harmless, they are fun, I like them too, you do you. The only reason I bring this up is because the prevalence of these patterns really speaks to the gender binary conditioning in our society.

Because while I won't say it never happens, I rarely see ultra feminine AFAB characters headcanoned as nonbinary with they/them pronouns. For example, The Owl House fandom loves to say Luz is nonbinary, but I can't remember seeing Amity or Willow referred to as they/them.

Similarly, I rarely see ultra masculune AMAB characters referred to as nonbinary or transfem. Masculine AMAB jocks are rarely referred to as they/them or she/her in fandom; it's always the sweet and nurturing ones.

And I think that, for western fandom at least, this is subconscious and goes back to how gendered our society is. We have been conditioned to see certain personality traits, fashions, and interests as gendered. So when a character doesn't conform to those gendered expectations, we think, ah, it MUST be because they are not actually their assigned gender! And in this way, we continue to uphold the gender binary shackles that we've grown into since birth.

I think part of the reason this stands out to me is that I am AFAB, and I also consider myself to be cis, but also very gender nonconforming. I keep my hair very short, I dress androgynously if not outright masc, I have stereotypical "masculine" personality traits, etc. I am GNC to my core and always have been (legit my clothes came from the "boy" section even as a kid). But I am still a cis woman. I still use she/her. But if I was a fictional character, I think fandoms would decide I used they/them because I am not at all femme.

Of course, there are nonbinary people who also buck conformity to their AGAB, there are transwomen who are sweet and sensitive etc. Nonbinary and and trans people who see themselves in GNC characters are totally valid. But when I see cis people in fandom who think a masc presenting female character can't be cis, or a sensitive male character can't be either . . . well. I do think that's subconscious gender binary bias at work.
