John, Prince of Portugal (1537-54)
Artist: Workshop of Antonis Mor (Netherlandish, 1519–1575)
Date: c. 1552-1554
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Royal Trust Collection, United Kingdom
Description
John, Prince of Portugal (1537-54) was the only surviving son of King John III and Queen Catherine of Portugal. He married Joanna of Austria, sister of Philip II of Spain, in December 1552. John died in January 1554 aged sixteen, shortly before the birth of his son Sebastian, who succeeded as King of Portugal.
This portrait is a contemporary replica of a lost original portrait by Anthonis Mor. The original portrait, created in 1552 when the sitter was fourteen, belonged to Mary of Hungary (it was destroyed by fire at the palace of El Pardo in 1604). This is one of two known replicas which were created by Mor’s workshop. Both would have been executed under the artist’s direct supervision in Portugal.
Therefore, despite being a replica, this portrait is very close to the lost original, and it has a remarkable history. It is thought to be the replica created in order to be sent to Joanna of Austria by the Queen of Portugal as part of the marriage negotiations. After the death of Joanna of Austria in 1573 this portrait passed into the collection of her brother, Philip II of Spain. At the time of Philip’s death it was on loan to his sister, the Empress Maria, at the palace adjoining the convent of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid. It probably passed into the convent’s own collection which, in the 1830s, came into the collection of ‘H. du Blaisel’ who sold it to Baron Taylor for the collection of Louis-Philippe I of France. It was then displayed in Louis Philippe’s ‘Galerie Espagnole’ at the Louvre.

Were you ever asked about Shigure art? I was about to ask if the Resplendent may have become your new favorite but all I can find is Ninja posts and "its not Silas so my wallet is safe"
I made a brief reaction post, but no official review of it, so I think our blue lad deserves a review.
Resplendent Shigure, drawn by… I think Kano Akira. Google translate fails me and I think that’s the only artist that matches that style:
Tumblr media
I wanna say that this Resplendent is lovely. Nifl’s elements were incorporated so well over Shigure’s outfit; the shoulder pauldrons with the gems, the Nifl trinkets on his little belt, the feathers, the snowflake trim… Shigure looks like he could be Fjorm’s slightly younger brother. My only gripe is that I wish he had a cape or a scarf added to the outfit for maximum flowiness. But what we got was definitely beautiful.
The art itself is really nice too. Nothing against Yura’s original piece, but the way they shaded the nose was so weird. Kano Akira fixes that issue, and also colors his eyes in a pretty way. Posework is decent and the effects for his critical portrait are rad. The expressions are pretty good, too. Shigure got some much needed attention.
I think Nifl fits based more on the aesthetic rather than an actual thematic reason for Shigure. One, it’s because he’s matching his mother. And two, Nifl’s color scheme is similar to Valla’s, so it definitely looks good on Shigure.
Overall, I’d give Resplendent Shigure a 9/10. I just wish he had a cape or scarf, then we would have had a 10/10 design.
