âFragile Microbiomesâ by bio-artist Anna Dumitriu
1. SYPHILIS DRESS- This dress is embroidered with images of the corkscrew-shaped bacterium which causes the sexually transmitted disease syphilis. These embroideries are impregnated with the sterilised DNA of the Nichols strain of the bacterium - Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum - which Dumitriu extracted with her collaborators.
2. MICROBE MOUTH- The tooth at the centre of this necklace was grown in the lab using an extremophile bacterium which is part of the species called Serratia (Serratia N14) that can produce hydroxyapatite, the same substance that tooth enamel is made from.
The handmade porcelain teeth that make up this necklace have been coated with glazes derived from various bacterial species that live in our mouths and cause tooth decay and gum disease, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, which can introduce an iron-containing light brown stain to the glaze.
3. TEETH MARKS: THE MOST PROFOUND MYSTERY- In his 1845 essay âOn Artificial Teethâ, W.H. Mortimer described false teeth as âthe most profound mysteryâ because they were never discussed. Instead, people would hide the stigma of bad teeth and foul breath using fans.
This altered antique fan is made from animal bone and has been mended with gold wire, both materials historically used to construct false teeth (which would also sometimes incorporate human teeth). The silk of the fan and ribbon has been grown and patterned with two species of oral pathogens: Prevotella intermedia and Porphyromonas gingivalis. These bacteria cause gum disease and bad breath, and the latter has also recently been linked to Alzheimerâs disease.
4. PLAGUE DRESS- This 1665-style 'Plague Dress' is made from raw silk, hand-dyed with walnut husks in reference to the famous herbalist of the era Nicholas Culpeper, who recommended walnuts as a treatment for plague. It has been appliquĂŠd with original 17th-century embroideries, impregnated with the DNA of Yersinia pestis bacteria (plague). The artist extracted this from killed bacteria in the laboratory of the National Collection of Type Cultures at the UK Health Security Agency.
The dress is stuffed and surrounded by lavender, which people carried during the Great Plague of London to cover the stench of infection and to prevent the disease, which was believed to be caused by 'bad air' or 'miasmas'. The silk of the dress references the Silk Road, a key vector for the spread of plague.
5. BACTERIAL BAPTISM- based on a vintage christening gown which has been altered by the artist to tell the story of research into how the microbiomes of babies develop, with a focus on the bacterium Clostridioides difficile, originally discovered by Hall and OâToole in 1935 and presented in their paper âIntestinal flora in new-born infantsâ. It was named Bacillus difficilis because it was difficult to grow, and in the 1970s it was recognised as causing conditions from mild antibiotic-associated diarrhoea to life-threatening intestinal inflammation. The embroidery silk is dyed using stains used in the study of the gut microbiome and the gown is decorated with hand-crocheted linen lace grown in lab with (sterilised) C. difficile biofilms. The piece also considers how new-borns become colonised by bacteria during birth in what has been described as âbacterial baptismâ.
6. ZENEXTON- Around 1570, Swiss physician and alchemist Theophrastus Paracelsus coined the term âZenextonâ, meaning an amulet worn around the neck to protect from the plague. Until then, amulets had a more general purpose of warding off (unspecified) disease, rather like the difference today between âbroad spectrumâ antibiotics and antibiotics informed by genomics approaches which target a specific organism.
Over the next century, several ideas were put forward as to what this amulet might contain: a paste made of powdered toads, sapphires that would turn black when they leeched the pestilence from the body, or menstrual blood. Bizarre improvements were later made: âof course, the toad should be finely powderedâ; âthe menstrual blood from a virginâ; âcollected on a full moonâ.
This very modern Zenexton has been 3D printed and offers the wearer something that genuinely protects: the recently developed vaccine against Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague.

At the Russian Court (3/?) Â I M P E R I A LÂ D I A D E MÂ Â
âRegal assemblage of pearls and old diamonds. This diadem is, past question, one of the finest specimens of its kind.â Fersman
This splendid diadem, worn by the Empress Alexandra at the opening of the Duma, was catalogued by Fersman as early 19th century, but it is more likely to have been made by the court jeweller Bolin expressly for the Tsarina, using antique pearls and diamonds from the Imperial Cabinet. Fersman considered it to be the fiest piece in the entire imperial collection. All trace if of it is lost after the inventory of 1922, and it seems likely that as with other pieces from the collection it was sold or broken up when some of the imperial jewels were sold by Christieâs in London in 1927.Â
The Empress Alexandra in court dress for the opening of the first Duma in 1906, photographed by K. Bulla. She wears the diadem, a small diamond chain of the Order of St Andrew, and a collier de chien in pearls and diamonds and a pearl and diamond cluster necklace, both surely created by Bolin to accompany the diadem. Neither necklace appears among the inventoried jewels, and it is likely that they had been taken by the Empress to Tobolsk and then disappeared. | The Jewels of the Romanovs Family and Court by Stefano PapiÂ

The Student and the Teacher - Newt Scamander
TW: female!reader
Y/N, a young New York witch who has always been passionate about magical creatures, heard about a magical zoologist who lives in London. So she went looking for him in the hope that he would teach her his trade.
She walks the streets on the lookout for the slightest clue that could help her find this famous Newt Scamander. When suddenly, while passing in front of an antique jewelry store, she saw something moving inside. She stopped her steps and returned to the window and was not surprised to see a Niffler filling the pocket of her belly with necklaces, earrings and other sparkling objects. Without being able to hold it back, the young girl burst into crystal-clear laughter and drew her magic wand to try to recover the little thief creature.
But before she could do anything a young man with curly hair arrived followed by another man with a mustache. He broke the window with an unspoken spell and rushed into the window to try to recover the Niffler. Unfortunately, the beast jumped out of the store, slithering across the road. Y/N then rushed towards the poor creature who was unable to escape from her. The young man got out of the trashed window and shook his wand to put everything back in order. With a disappointed look, the wizard collected his suitcase and began to walk away. But before he could left with his friend the young girl ran to him, handing him her Niffler. The man's gaze moved from the girl to the creature and so on.
- I managed to catch your Nifleur before he escaped Sir, she said, smiling.
The young brunette then gave him a frank smile and took the creature in his arms before putting it back in his suitcase.
- Thank you so much...
She told him his name and shook his hand honestly.
- You are Newt Scamander, aren't you?
- Um yes yes, it's me. He smiled shyly
- I was just looking for you, Mister Scamander... He cut him off.
- Please call me Newt.
- Of course! Well, Newt, I was looking for you.
- Looking for me? He frowned.
- Yes ! I was told you were the only one magiczoologist that exists. And being passionate about magical creatures I I was wondering if you could teach me your trade... maybe?
She finished her sentence in a whisper, not sure of his reaction. Norbert raised his eyebrows, surprised. Then he gave a small smile.
- Well, you can to come to my reserve and I'll see what you're capable of... Other than catching Nifflers I mean, which is very useful you can believe me.
She laughed softly and followed him, happier than ever. They apparated together and arrived at Newt's house, in his reserve. The young girl was finally able to put into practice everything she had studied for so long. And it must be admitted that Norber was rather enthusiastic at the idea of âhaving him as an apprentice.
- Where did you learn all that? He asked curiously.
- Well, thanks to your book Newt. She replied, laughing.
He turned red and laughed heartily with her. The evening continued like this. And after two hours of visit and treatment they went back upstairs. There, Newt returned to Y/N and him while holding out his hand.
- Y/N, you are officially my apprentice. He smiled. She returned his handshake almost jumping because she was so happy.
- Oh thank you Newt, you won't regret it not, I promise you!
- Oh but I'm sure of it. He smiles crookedly looking at her with piercing eyes without realizing it.
The young girl could not keep from turning scarlet. After that they all went to eat and Y/N was able to meet Newt's friend, Jacob Kowalski. A very nice boy who's very in love with a certain Queeny Goldstein. He told you she was the sister of Tina Goldstein, the girl with whom Norbert would be in love said Jacob
- No Jacob, I already told you, Tina and I it's over. He said shaking his head.
- Oh, did you argue? Asked carefully Y/N.
-Ah no, not at all. We left by mutual agreement. We were better friends after all. And that's what we are now. He gave his friend a pointed look which made the young girl laugh.
The end of the meal was in a good mood. Jacob leaves right after and the two found themselves alone. They were chatting on the sofa in a quiet atmosphere
- By the way Y/N what were you doing back in America? he asked, facing the young girl, her head resting on her hand and her elbow propped on the back of the sofa.
- Well I was studying. I just finished a few weeks ago. After that I came directly to pick you up. She replied, sitting cross-legged facing the brunette.
- Oh but then, how old are you? He said, getting up and going to get the kettle which was starting to whistle.
- I'm 22 years old.
They talked for another hour, while drinking tea before going to bed.
- Well, good night Newt. See you tomorrow !She said as she got ready to go through the door. entry.
- Wait, where are you going to sleep? he worried.
- Oh I think I would find one hostel or hotel for the night.
- It's already past midnight Y/N, you won't find anything tonight.
- But yes, don't worry. I'll manage. She smiles at him.
- And for tomorrow and the other days eh? No, out of question. I can't let a young girl wander the streets of London alone in the middle of the night. You can take the guest room! He said it all in one go and she smiled softly.
- All right. She said simply.
- Really ? Awesome ! So come, follow me.
He took her to a nice little room where she opened her suitcase and settled down to sleep. The next morning she got up first, being used to being woken up very early by her family. So she set about preparing breakfast to thank her host. She was making the omelette when the latter arrived in the small kitchen, shirtless.
Seeing the young girl, the frying pan in her hand, her mouth open and her red cheeks staring at him, he realized that he was not alone, jumped up and stammered apologies before going to put on a black tank top. He wore loose beige fabric pants and was barefoot.
Y/N, on the other hand, was wearing a large shirt and pajama pants too. Newt was scarlet red while the young girl couldn't help but laugh at the scene that had unfolded before her eyes a few minutes before.
- I'm sorry Y/N, I forgot that I was no longer alone. He admitted embarrassed.
- Oh no, it's nothing Newt. This isn't the first torso I've seen, you kn-
But she didn't finish her sentence when she realized what she was saying, she in turn turned purple. This time it was the magiczoologist who burst into hearty laughter.
- No, well what I mean is that I grew up with three brothers so I often saw them shirtless. Saw you? She said stuttering.
- I see yeah... He replied simply, a smile on his face as he scrutinized the young girl in front of him. Itâs true that now that you mention it, you havenât yet told me about your family.
- Oh there is nothing interesting to say really. To be honest, I've never had a very good relationship with them. She said as she served him the omelette.
- Thanks, that looks delicious! Exclaimed the wizard, throwing himself at the food. Is that why you came to London? To escape them?
- Run away from them no, just take a step back.. But beyond everything it was to find you Sir. She gave him an amused look as her cheeks took on a rosy tint.
- Well, I'm delighted to have served as an alibi for you to escape from the United States. He laughs.
- We can hardly make a better alibi must be said! She laughed in turn.
Once breakfast was finished, Newt took his assistant to his basement. They spent the day talking to each other, inadvertently touching their hands and so on.
The days passed and it was almost two months since Y/N worked alongside Scamander and obviously the contact between the two individuals became more familiar. They had become very accomplices. It was obvious that Norbert liked the young girl, he even felt more fascination for her than for Tina before. And conversely, Y/N was very attracted to the magiczoologist but convinced that he could never love her. And then she was too young for him and not beautiful enough.
Well, that's what she thought until the day when Newt - under Jacob's advice of course - decided to surprise him. The first night they met, after dinner once Jacob had left, she told him that she had always dreamed of having her own Niffler. But she never could because her parents hated animals and now she can't because she doesn't have enough money. However, it turns out that Newt's Nifflers have just had a litter of baby Nifleurs. So he said it would be nice to have one for her. And then he also planned to confess his feelings to her this evening. That evening Y/N was returning from a visit to Queeny - with whom she had become very friend - and had just put her coat on the rack when she felt a presence at her back. She turned around to face Newt with a big smile, her cheeks rosy.
- Y/N.
- Newt, whatâs wrong? she asked puzzled by his intense gaze.
Without answering he slipped his arm around her waist and guided her to the sofa where she sat. The magical zoologist stood before her and him in front of a small wooden box with a hole in it. Inside, the girl saw something moving.
- It's for you. The wizard said softly to him. I hope you like it. He concluded with a cute little smile when she carefully took the box from his hands.
She opened the lid of the box and examined the contents. Suddenly her eyes lit up, she carefully placed the box on the coffee table and jumped on top of the man to give him a hug. The person in question returned her embrace by wrapping his arms around her and holding her close to him as if he no longer wanted her to leave. He breathed in the perfume that emanated from her hair, she smelled good of lavender. He loves lavender.
She broke away from him and kissed him on the plays while whispering a little: âthank you infinitely Norbert, I don't know how thank you". Then she turned around to look at the box when a hand clung to her wrist. He turned her towards him and with a quick step approached her, placed his hand on her cheek and placed her lips on his.
After few seconds of surprise she young girl responded to his kiss by slipping her hands into the sorcerer's hair. He then placed his other hand on her hips. The kiss lasted for several more seconds and the two lovers had to separate because of the lack of oxygen.
- Y/N I like you... I really do. He whispered to him gently.
- Oh if you knew how I waited moment. Obviously I love you Norbert.
And she kissed him again. And that's it, lrt's leave the two lovers the privacy they need. In any case, what is certain is that it was a shock for Jacob to show up at his friend's house and surprise him in bed with the young girl. But strangely, Queeny wasn't surprised at all...

Elbert Greetia: Blind Love Ending Chapter 23
Blind Love Chapter 22
âĄââââĄ
Before we got back to the castle, Alfons got off the carriage, saying he had business with a "friend," and disappeared into the London night, and Roger caught Jude at the castle entrance and went off to drink.
(...I have to go back to my room.)
I thought so, but maybe because I had spent the last few days in the same room as Elbert, I felt lonely.
(Ah... I'm already in front of my room.)
Kate: Well then, Lord Elbert...
I tried to say goodnight, but the words wouldn't come out.
Elbert was also silent, staring at me.
(Elbert...)
We both must be hoping for the same thing in our hearts.
Elbert: ...Saying goodnight to you... used to make me happy,
Elbert: But now... I don't want to hear those words here.
Kate: I... I didn't want to say it now either...
Elbert's hand cupped my cheek as if touching a treasure.
As if to trap me in his deep blue eyes.
Elbert: ...Come to my room, Kate.
Elbert: Sleep in my room. Say goodnight to me... in my bed.
My heart pounded.
I was happy that I no longer had to resist his possessiveness towards me.
Kate: ...Yes... Lord Elbert...
The words that spilled out were so sweetly seductive that I was surprised myself.
-
While waiting for the promised month to pass, I spent my days in my room compiling reports as a Fairytale Keeper, and my nights sleeping next to Elbert in his room, which was now a little less cluttered.
Elbert also seemed busy during the day, doing research, writing letters, and going out with Alfons.
-
One afternoon, a mountain of gift boxes was delivered to the entrance.
Kate: What's this?
(Is it a gift for someone...? It's a huge amount.)
William: Apparently, it's all for you.
Kate: For me...?
William: Here.
The card I received from William certainly had my name on it.
Kate: But I don't know who it could be from...
Liam: What's up, you two...? Whoa, that's a huge amount.
Harrison: It's been a while since I've seen this sight.
Kate: A while...?
Harrison: This kind of thing happened regularly before you came to the castle.
Liam: Back then, it wasn't presents, but jewels, stuffed animals, and suspicious antiques.
(Jewels, stuffed animals, antiques...)
Kate: Could it be... Lord Elbert?
All three of them nodded.
Kate: But... he said he was going to stop collecting beautiful things...
William: Maybe the purpose is different this time?
Liam: These are from a very famous dressmaker. Oh, and these shoes are the new ones I saw at the department store!
Harrison: This necklace kind of resembles the color of your eyes.
William: All the previous collections were addressed to Elbert, but this time they're all addressed to Kate.
Kate: ...All for me.
William: Even without using your powers of observation, it's obvious what the purpose of this collection is.
Alfons: Yawn... Oh my, everyone's here so early in the morning.
Kate: ...! Good morning, Alfons.
Alfons: Ah, I see... they arrived. Those things.
Alfons: I won't forget what happened yesterday...
Harrison: How could you forget what happened yesterday?
Liam: Haha, you're exaggerating.
Alfons: "Do you think this will make Kate smile...?" he asked me over and over again.
Alfons: Elbert was trying to buy everything without waiting for my answer.
Alfons: I desperately held back my laughter, thinking Kate's room would explode.
Harrison: You're laughing now.
Liam: You were definitely enjoying it.
Alfons: The result of that battle is this.
Kate: And this is the result of thinning it out... Thank you.
Alfons: You made me laugh enough to cover my commission, so no need for thanks.
Alfons looked at me and narrowed his eyes.
Alfons: ...For him now, seeing you smile must be the greatest happiness in the world.
Alfons: For that... he'll do anything.
His smile seemed to be mixed with a dark amusement, as if he was hiding some kind of scheme.
Kate: ...What do you mean?
Alfons: You'll understand eventually.
Alfons: Well, I'm going to sleep now. I'm tired from staying up all night.
Without revealing his hidden intentions, Alfons quickly returned to his room.
William: ...So, what are you going to do with this mountain of presents?
("The purpose is different this time...")
(These are all... to make me smile.)
It's not that I want a lot of dresses and shoes, and I don't like luxury.
(But if it's something Elbert put his heart into... I'd be happy with anything.)
(But this much is still a little too much...)
Kate: ...I'll take them all to my room.
Seeing my smile, William narrowed his eyes happily.
William: It looks like it's going to be a very lively room.
-
After all the presents were carried to my room and I thanked the maids who helped me, I knocked on Elbert's door as usual.
Kate: Lord Elbert, can I come in?
Elbert: ...Of course.
Elbert: ...Welcome back.
When I opened the door, Elbert greeted me.
My heart skipped a beat at the words directed at me with a happy smile.
("Welcome back"...)
Kate: ...I'm back.
Kate: It feels like this is my room.
Elbert: ...
Elbert: You can think that if you want.
Kate: ...!
Smiling even more happily, Elbert lightly spread his arms towards me while still sitting in his chair.
Elbert: ...Come here.
As I walked towards him, he suddenly pulled me in and I landed on his lap.
Kate: L-Lord Elbert?
Elbert: ...Don't run away.
His arms wrapped around my waist, trapping me.
Elbert: I wanted to wait until you were done concentrating on your report this afternoon, but...
Elbert: ...I missed you.
He nuzzled my hair against his cheek, and my chest tightened sweetly.
Kate: Even though we were together until this morning...?
Elbert: No matter how much time we spend together... there's never a moment when I don't want you.
I felt a shiver run down my skin as I felt his heavy possessiveness directed at me.
(--Elbert still has nightmares sometimes.)
Even if he let go of atonement, the guilt of being happy probably hasn't disappeared completely.
(But even so... he reaches out for happiness like this...)
(I want to respond with all of me...)
I also nuzzled my cheek against Elbert's soft golden hair.
Elbert's arms trembled, and his embrace tightened.
Kate: I received a lot of presents from you, Lord Elbert.
Elbert: ...!
Elbert: ...I'm sorry.
Elbert looked away slightly, embarrassed.
Kate: Why are you apologizing?
Elbert: Al warned me that you'd be troubled if I got you too much...
Elbert: ...But I ended up buying too much.
(Ah... he does have some self-awareness.)
Elbert: ...Did I trouble you?
His anxious question was so cute that I couldn't help but laugh.
Kate: Hehe... It did surprise me a little.
Kate: But I was much happier with your feelings, Lord Elbert.
Elbert: ...I see. ...That's good.
Kate: But if you send me this much every day, I won't have enough rooms, even if I had several.
Kate: From now on... please do it little by little.
Elbert: ...Little by little?
Kate: Yes, little by little.
Elbert: ...One a day?
Kate: ...Let's make it at least one a month.
Elbert: One... a month...
Elbert nodded, somehow lacking confidence.
Elbert: I'll try...
Elbert: But if it happens again like today... then... you can scold me.
Kate: Me scolding you, Lord Elbert...?
Elbert: Yes.
Kate: Can I do it...?
Elbert: ...Try.
Kate: Huh? Uhh...um...
I furrowed my brow and tried to make a stern face.
Kate: N...No, Lord Elbert.
Kate: Just being by your side is enough happiness for me, so I don't need that many things.
Elbert: .............
Kate: ... Something like that, maybe?
Elbert: ...Hehe, no good. Cute.
Kate: Huh...?
Elbert: Cute...I might do it again on purpose just to be scolded by you.
Kate: N...No, really.
Being called cute, my face heats up.
Lord Elbert happily narrowed his eyes and buried his face in the nape of my neck.
Elbert: When I'm with you...I want more and more things, it's troubling.
Elbert: I want everything that will make you happy.
Elbert: I want to see all the expressions on your face that I haven't seen yet...
Kate: ...You'll see a lot from now on.
Kate: Because I intend to be with you from now on, Lord Elbert.
Elbert: ...........
Elbert laughed, but there was a hint of pain in his expression.
Kate: Lord Elbert...?
Elbert: I truly believed that you didn't belong here, that you shouldn't have come to this place...
Elbert: But now, hearing you say that you'll stay with me in this darkness... it makes me so happy.
Even now, after everything that's happened, I still believe that you, Elbert, are too good for sin.
Kate: As long as I'm by your side, I'm not afraid of any darkness.
Kate: No matter how sinful the sights I encounter in the future...
Kate: I won't regret a thing.
Kate: So, please don't worry about it.
Elbert: ... Mm.
Elbert smiled happily and kissed my lips.
I closed my eyes, intoxicated by the sweet sensation.
Our kiss, never breaking once, deepened gradually., and as my body melted from the inside out, Elbert whispered to me.
Elbert: I... I want to be happy with you.
Elbert: And I'll do whatever it takes to make that happen.
Elbert: I'll make sure that anything that hurts you or makes you sad... disappears from this world.
(Anything....)
I recall Alfons saying something similar.
It didn't seem like he said it simply meaning he wouldn't mind collecting many presents.
--Now, I feel the same uneasiness from Elbert that I felt back then.
Elbert: ... I've decided to return to the mansion once. At that time, I will dismiss the servants.
Kate: Dismiss... You mean, fire them?
Elbert: Yes--
Elbert: You always looked sad in that mansion.
Elbert: That is my mansion. I don't want to keep anything that makes my precious person sad.
Elbert: ... I want to collect and keep only things that make you happy.
(The people in that mansion... especially Jeffrey...)
(They have been eroding Elbert's body and heart for many years.)
The terrifying memories of the auction night come flooding back.
*flashback*
Kate: ... Are you saying someone offered to capture me?
Man of the Company: Yeah, we got a request saying, "We'll pay you a high reward if you sell her off."
Man of the Company: --From the head butler of the Count Greetia's household.
*flashback over*
(...I didn't tell Elbert that it was Jeffrey who requested my kidnapping from the company.)
Immediately after being rescued, I was caught up in a situation where I couldn't tell him, and it remains unsaid.
(But, if we can dismiss Jeffrey and cut ties with him like this...)
(I feel it's okay if he doesn't know.)
(If I told him, Elbert would surely blame himself for involving Jeffrey and me, and be hurt...)
Elbert: --I also know that Jeffrey had you attacked.
Kate: ...!
A chill ran down my spine.
Kate: You knew...
Elbert: ...Yes. I saw the list of clients.
Elbert's expression didn't show the pain or sadness I was worried about, but only--the same cold killing intent I felt when Elbert killed the man from the company on the night of the auction, like something crawling out from the bottom of the water.
(And it's much more than that time,)
(Less hesitation, deeper, and denser--)
Elbert: I want to be happy with you.
Elbert: That's why... those who try to take away that happiness...
Elbert: I can't allow it.
When I was staying at the mansion before, I didn't feel any hostility from Elbert towards Jeffrey, despite the fact that he had been hurt for so long.
And yet, now a sharpened hostility is clearly directed towards him.
(Elbert... maybe.)
(Jeffrey...)
A premonition of some decisive event happening makes my heart stir.
But in my heart, along with fear and anxiety--a faint elation wells up.
(Whatever it is)
(Whatever Elbert thinks is necessary for his happiness)
(I don't want to stop him.)
I want him to smile.
I don't want him to give up his own happiness and look sad anymore.
(Whatever happens--)
(I want to stay by Elbert's side.)
Kate: Can I come with you?
Elbert: ... Yes.
Elbert: But... could you wait outside the mansion?
Elbert smiled softly.
Elbert: Because guilt doesn't suit you.

Egyptian Revival
Yesterday's post was about the full opening of Tutankhamun's tomb, but there have been several times when Egypt has had a strong influence in fashion and art, and here I selected a few things from the 1910s and 1920s that are Egyptian revival, and of course let me know which ones are your favourites of you can add some when reblogging this post.
Here we go.
The beginning of the century marked the birth of modern dance, so we see that part of the Orientalism trend had a deep Egyptian influence from Les Ballets Russes to the Denishawn school: strong lines, profile poses, spectacular costumes, all taken from the art and sculpture of the ancient Egypt.
Here a little video of the Denishawn dancers along Ted Shawn (not the dance of the picture above), with no music because this is FROM 1913:
youtube
Also, this influence is clearly seen in the art deco masterpiece that is the dance scene from Metropolis (1927):

Fashion and accessories were deeply inspired by Egypt in the 1920s, thanks to the simple shapes of the garments, the use of striking accessories and jewelry, and the use of embellishments and embroidery to elevate the simple dresses: from appliquĂŠs to bead embroidery, to burnt velvet and translucent layers. And of course, let's not forget the use of colour that gives the feel of ancient Egyptian art: gold, sand, teal, royal blue, and burnt orange.

Of course, let's not forget the graphic arts. illustration was a key for advertising and communication when colour photos were not available. Here a small selection of my favourites:

LONDON ADVENTURE
Joseph Quinn & female y/n
Summary: You and Joseph get to his apartment aaaaaaandâŚ
Content Warning: 18+, consumption of alcohol, fingering, rpf
Part 5
That kiss boosted your confidence incredibly. Whatever would happen tonight, you were ready for it. Together you left the building at Fenchurch Street. Joe ordered a cab, and then you were on your way to his home. You did not have a passionate make out session in the back of the cab, you both just sat there, your fingers intertwined with each other. You played with his rings, he wore two different ones. One was a simple but thick silver ring, the other was shaped round at the front. You took a close look at them. Your gaze wandered to his neck, where he wore a silver chain necklace. You could not resist, you had to touch him there. Suddenly you felt him staring at you. âYou are beautiful my love.â His hand touched the side of your face and he pulled you in for a kiss. Your face heated, when he gently kissed you. The kiss broke when you started to smile a bit, you could not believe what happened right now. âWe are here.â, Joe said to you, your eyes still closed. Joe paid the cab driver, you left the car and stood right in front of the house, where is apartment was in. His apartment was in the middle of Clapham, it was a beautiful brick house. Joe got his keys out of the pocket of his trousers and you walked up the old stairs to his apartment door. Joe opened it and you walked into his home. It was a cozy and homely big room you first walked in: a big open living space with a kitchen. The furniture was a mix of modern but also old and antique pieces. Mostly white, and brown wooden stuff, the decor details were mostly green. At one of the walls there was an edged, red guitar in a glass showcase. Joe took your coat and laid it on the old armchair in one of the corners. âTake a seat.â, he waved to the big dark green satin sofa and walked to the little bar, which was right under the displayed guitar. You left our heels at the entrance door and sat on the sofa and waited for him to come back with two glasses in his hands. âI hope you like martinis.â, he smiled at you and sat right next to you, handing you one of the glasses. His leg touched yours when he wanted to toast with you. âWell, I´ll find out in a few seconds.â , you answered. âReally? You never had a martini before?â, he played shocked. âNope, it´s your favorite drink?â âYes, it´s delicious!!â He took a sip and then looked at your face expectantly. You drank a little bit, you were really picky when it came to alcoholic drinks. âI like itâ, you said to him. âYes!â, he grinned at you.
After you talked for a while again, you started to walk around the room. The guitar was just fascinating so you stood right in front of it. There were autographs on it. âWho signed it?â Joe came over to you and hugged you from behind. He intertwined his hands in front of your stomach and laid his head on your shoulder. âMetallica.â âReally? Why exactly?â âI got to meet them some time ago. I played their song Master of muppets on Stranger things.â You remembered that scene really well, you liked the dynamic of his character and your favorite one, Dustin, very much in that scene. But you did want to fangirl too hard (like Jen) to make him uncomfortable. âThat´s really impressive, so you really play guitar?â Joe loosened his grip on you and made his way to a record player on an old-looking sideboard. He put on a record, and soft music started to play. He got back to you and replied with a yes. Now he hugged you from the front, his hands on your waist. Slowly you both started to move in the rhythm of the music. For a few minutes you just slow danced with each other. You really enjoyed it, it was your first time dancing with a guy. Joe gently planted a kiss on your forehead. He wasn´t much taller than you, but it was perfect for these kinds of kisses. His lips wandered down your cheek, he kissed you on your lips and moved on down your neck. Your head fell to the side to give him better access. He moved your hair behind your ear and started to softly nibble at your neck. âJoe.â, you interrupted him. Joe immediately stopped: âSorry, am I going too fast?â, he looked worried. âNo!â, you tried to reassure him. You wanted all of this so bad. âI just wanted to let you know, that⌠I´m completely unexperienced on every possible level. In just 24 hours, I had my first date, my first kiss, my first dance with someoneâ Joe watched you with a serious gaze. âYou can tell me, if this is all too fast.â âIt´s not, I really want you.â You really wanted him. All the doubts about Jen telling you, that he was touchy with his fans were blown away. He obviously wouldn´t touch any fans the way he did touch you. He also touched you different than not even 24 hours ago. And Joe made you feel so comfortable with him, you would have never thought, that somebody could make you feel like that in such a short time. And by the way, you were ready to have sex for a couple of years now. There was just never the chance before. Before today, before now. Of course, you were incredibly nervous. The thought of being completely naked in front of somebody, made you nervous since forever. But you felt the need to be touched by Joe. After you said the last sentence, Joe smirked and continued to kiss you. You shrieked a little when he grabbed you by your waist and lifted you up from the comfy carpet underneath your feet. You wrapped your legs around his hips, while he walked to the sofa. He did not stop kissing you, more passionately now. He let himself fall onto the sofa backwards, you ended up sitting on his lap. Your legs were on the outer side of his thighs. You both chuckled a bit, without stopping the make out session. You could feel his hips moving against you, which elicited goosebumps down your spine. You could not resist and grinded down on his lap. The dress you decided for earlier this evening had already slipped up a few inches. There were just your underwear and Joes clothing which hold back you touching each other completely. It felt weird and just fantastic at the same time to sit on him like that, you felt exposed without actually being it. Joe interrupted your kissing to look at your face intensely: âYou are sure?â âYes, I need you.â
Him reassuring if you were really sure about this, made the need even worse. You resumed kissing him wilder, he was such a good kisser, even though you had no one to compare, but you perceived that your lips were simply made for each other. Joe lifted up your dress a bit more, the moment his hands went up to your ribs. He grunted a little bit: âI need you to take this off.â You threw off the dress right away, Joe helped you getting it over your head. He gazed at your now more exposed body. Only your bra and panties were in his way. Joe turned to your cleavage and began to plant kisses all over. You couldnât keep your hands out of his curly hair and smelled it. Like everything on him it smelled amazing. Your arousal got to a mind-blowing point, it seemed like his did too. You could feel his bulge growing. While he kissed up your neck again, his hand wandered more and more down to your panties. âJoe.â, you breathed heavily: âI need you right now.â âYou are repeating your self love.â, he cheekily grinned. âPlease, take off your clothes.â, you desperately moaned into his mouth. You tugged his shirt and ripped the buttons open. His chest was displayed in front you. He had a little belly what made you even more aroused. You were never into muscly guys, Joe was perfect. His body showed you that he simply enjoyed life to the fullest. You brushed your fingertips gently down his chest, around his navel and down to his happy trail. Joe caught you biting your lower lip. He pretty much inspected you. Again, he lifted his hips up, his bulge got more palpable. âWait a second.â Joe, lifted you up from his lap and laid you down on your back so he was able to take off his trousers and the rest of his shirt. You did not have enough time to engrave this sight into your brain, he was on top of you again rapidly. But you recognized a little tattooed âWâ on his foot.
His hands ran down at your sides right away. And then he slipped his hand into your panties, and touched you, where nobody ever touched you before. The gentle contact of his fingers on your clit made you shiver. The flame got really intense, you moaned and shut your eyes, but you could hear the corners of Joes mouth rise. His finger moved down a little and circled around your slit, your hands were caressing his back. You arched your back, your bodies touched, you tried to pull Joe closer to you. While one of his hands was fingering you, the other one had a hard time to keep himself hovering above you. Your attempt to shift him down on you, made him so, because he could not stay in his position. It seemed a little clumsy, but you just thought it was the cutest thing. You chuckled, and kissed him passionately. He kissed you even more passionately. It was a powerful and intense kiss. You both were really good at kissing together. âDamn, you are so hot.â You blushed a bit. That compliment was the last final straw that made you more confident. âJoe, please!â, you begged. Joes fingers went back up to your clit, the movements got a little bit more intense the moment he realised you liked that, his lips never left yours. Your hips started to move in the same rhythm like his fingers and you felt the pleasure rising down there. Your moans got louder, Joe grunted, he seemed to like your small noises. And then, you came. Like a big knot snapping in your lower stomach, it wasn´t you first orgasm, you did it yourself frequently, but it definitely did not even come close to what you had just experienced. Your pussy clenched around nothing, you screamed Joes name, while you hit your high. Your hands scraped his back. âDid that feel good?â, Joe asked, when he noticed that you slowly came down from your orgasm. Your body still vibrated, you needed to cackle: âAre you kidding me?â You pressed a kiss onto his mouth, opening your lips a bit more to give Joe better access with his tongue. And then he asked you: âWanna go to my bedroom?â
To be continuedâŚ

. Kiss Me With Your Fist wip introduction .
featuring @reininginthefirewriting âs vespera
a prequel to crave the fiction [character edits to be added at a later time]
Java Elliot, always on the precipice of danger and poor decisions, finds himself on a promising path of self-improvement while living with his brother Chai.
As he explores college majors and seeks a more stable job, Java's plans take a detour when he encounters Colt Hanniganâa captivating yet dangerous man who leads him astray.
Drawn into Coltâs twisted life of tantalizing drugs and criminal activity, Java is an inadvertent witness to an excess of violence and endures it at the end of Coltâs fist more nights than not.
Afraid to escape at the chance Colt might come after him, or worse, Java grapples with choices that endanger his hard-fought progress and continues to place not only his life but also his closest friendships in jeopardy.
characters :
Java Elliot â
Java can weave a lie so plausible even he could fall for it and believe it to be true, to the point that he sometimes questions his memory. But it keeps him safe and it keeps him sane, so why stop now when heâs already dug himself this deep?
likes simple things like leftover pizza and good music . could make a living off of lying if there was ever a need for it . would rather be at a concert than almost anywhere else . uses his friends as pillows . regularly drinks iced tea . too good at board games for anyone to enjoy playing because they know theyâll lose . prefers thrifting over buying new . collects vinyls and CDs and has a wide range of taste in music . not sure what he wants to pursue in life so he stagnates and jumps aimlessly from one project to another
Chai Elliot â
Chai has a busy enough life on their own without having to worry about their younger brother, but someone had to step up and keep Java safe from himself and the dangerous crowd heâs gotten himself caught up with. They still make time for their college courses and occasional hookups when time allows, but sometimes ⌠sometimes Chai wishes they didnât have to put their plans on hold to make sure Java doesnât get himself killed.
loves dinosaurs and is pursuing a career as a museum curator . likes to hike, climb trees, and travel but seldom has the opportunity . prefers nonfiction books, learning the history of our planet, and watching documentaries . skirts and loose button-up shirts are essential to achieving peak gender balance . canât convince them that black coffee and warm buttered toast is a treat and a perfect breakfast . memes? memes . flirty and handsy and not afraid of public displays of affection, no matter how much on display . could nap all day if given the chance
Colt Hannigan â
Prone to making bad choices, itâs no surprise that Java finds himself hand-in-hand with the son of one of the most dangerous men in his neighborhood. Charming and manipulative, Colt isnât a man anyone should get involved with, and Java will come to learn heâs not alone in making that mistake
quick to anger and prone to violence . possessive and strategic . always gets what he wants . wears a chain necklace . collects antiques said to be worth thousands . psychology major and uses his knowledge to his advantage . appearance and fashion are important, for him and his partners . gourmet cuisine is the only acceptable menu . molds his partners into what he needs and wants them to be
London Elliot â
Too young to truly understand what is going on in her brotherâs life, London remains oblivious and carefree ⌠at least as far as familial drama goes. She has her own struggles with anxiety and selective mutism, finding solace in reading and ballet led by her instructor and favorite person, Vespera.
pastels and rainbows . observant and perceptive . great adoration for nature and animals . often found with a paintbrush in hand, but she likes to dabble in all creative art mediums . aspires to help people when sheâs older . collects leaves and petals, likes to lay in the grass and observe the sky . love for ballet stems from its ability to express her emotions non-verbally
Vespera Cordova Ramirez â
Best friend and confidant, Vespera is always there to support Java and occasionally turns a blind eye to his choices, something that having a chaotic brother like Matias has inadvertently prepared her for
lives and breathes music . expresses her love for her Colombian heritage through cooking . far from being a stranger to engaging in casual hookups . a contradiction of ballet and skateboarding . wishes to better the world for her disabled students . conceals the hurt of a past unknown . intensely protective of those she allows herself to love . unapologetically herself . knows sign language . snarky comebacks and a sharp wit

Simeon Solomon - Habet! In the Coliseum (1865)
A group of richly-attired Roman women lean from the balustrade overlooking an amphitheater in antiquity. Down below the crowd bays for the blood of one of the fighters as they watch the gladiatorial combat amid the dust and gore. The cry of Habet! (He is hit!) echoes around as the women make the decision whether to slay the vanquished gladiator or allow him to live. The women's reactions vary from the anguish of the girl who has fainted in a pallid swoon, the horror of another who rushes forward with animated wide-eyed expression, the pity of the woman on the far left whose brow is furrowed with concern and the blood-lust of the golden-haired woman who is making a gesture that suggests that she wants to see the gladiator killed. She is clutching a golden serpent necklace at her throat and showing her white teeth in an animalistic expression which many critics noted as being symbolic of a cold heart and a lust for violence. Swinburne suggested that this figure captures 'the ferocity of blondes' but she was probably intended to represent vanity and the fashion in the Imperial period for dyeing hair. Her expression seems to also reflect a sensuous admiration of the sweaty physicality of the half-naked gladiators. The most enigmatic expression is that in the face of the central figure who seems to be still considering her verdict. She is bedecked in ornate gold jewellery and has an inlaid box in front of her from which she has perhaps been throwing jewelled favours to her favourite combatants. Behind these bejewelled patrician women is a gaunt and melancholic servant-woman fanning her mistress with peacock feathers -symbolic of the decadence and vanity of the main protagonists in this orgy of lascivious cruelty. This quiet and contemplative servant seems weary of the horrors she is witnessing, unable or unwilling to lift her eyes to the scene that she has seen so many times in every aspect of her dominated life. She is as downtrodden as the gladiators, a victim of the cruelty of the rich. The only innocent and unsuspecting face among the crowd is a little girl whose mother seems to be about to pull her away from the horror that is unfolding.
The model for the slave-girl was Fanny Eaton, a woman from Jamaica whose mother was a former slave in a sugar plantation. She also modelled for Solomon's The Mother of Moses of 1860 (Delaware Art Gallery, Wilmington) and for one of the women in the background of Rossetti's The Beloved (Tate). The model for the blonde woman strongly resembles Emma Mary Jones, a professional model who is known to have posed for Solomon at this time and who is best-known as Frederick Sandys' mistress and model for pictures like Proud Maisie (Christie's London, 16 June 2015, lot 18) and Love's Shadow (Sotheby's New York, 5 May 2011, lot 69) which similarly show aggressive femininity. "A trove of precious jewelry from Cambodiaâs past has been repatriated after surfacing in London.
Totaling 77 artifacts from the medieval kingdom of Angkor, they are believed to have been trafficked from the country during the tyranny of the Khmer Rouge and the civil wars that plagued the country during the 20th century.
Angkor was one of the greatest powers in the East between the 9th and 14th centuries. Their theocratic capital of Angkor Wat is considered one of the 7 Wonders of the Medieval World, and today is still the largest religious complex on Earth.
The treasures date squarely to this period of flourishing and some of the crowns are believed to have sat on royal brows. They include items âsuch as gold and other precious metal pieces from the Pre-Angkorian and Angkorian period including crowns, necklaces, bracelets, belts, earrings, and amulets,â the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts said in a statement.
The items came from the estate of recently-late serial art trafficker Douglas Latchford, who for many years was considered an expert antiquities appraiser, but was later discovered to have worked alongside the Communist Khmer Rouge to traffic hundreds of artifacts from the country.
Now, many of the nationâs historical treasures are returning, and this trove is just the most recent tranche.
Last year, US citizens or institutions returned either voluntarily or by court order, 30 items sold by Latchford, including a 10th-century sculpture of the Hindu god Skanda atop a peacock considered a âmasterpiece.â
The year before that, the estate of Latchford, who died in 2020 before he could be convicted of antiquities trafficking, sent back five bronze and sandstone sculptures to Cambodia."
-via Good News Network, 2/22/23
--
Bonus Info:
"The return of the items followed a September 2020 agreement with Latchford's family under which all Cambodian artifacts in their possession would be returned to Cambodia. Other stone and bronze artifacts were returned in September 2021."

Lady Sisyphus is a Downton fanfiction par excellence for many reasons, but its attention to historical detail is breathtaking--e.g., Cora's father sends her to London in 1888 with a resplendent-to-the-point-of-gaudiness sapphire necklace, "subtly" advertising the family's wealth, and of course the color would complement her eyes, but it's also period-accurate to the fashion for sapphires as status symbol after companies began mining that unusually pristine deposit in Kashmir circa 1880. Sorry I'm watching a Vermont episode of Antiques Roadshow and it reminded me of the 1880 Kashmir landslide and how popularly sapphires figured in late Victorian/early Edwardian jewelry

yay I'm back at writing A Friendly Heart! (my last unicorn dreamling au) Have a bit of chapter 5! A bit of Hob's back story and POV (for clarity, Hob is not immortal and has never met Dream in this)
Hob Gadling was a patient man. He took things in stride â life was life, and one just had to roll with it and enjoy it, that was his way of seeing things. He found enjoyment in all kinds of things, small things more than grand ones. Hob did not care about wealth and titles, but they certainly made living a lot easier. Becoming Roderick Burgessâ security and occasional handler of dangerous business wasnât something heâd have seen himself doing ten years ago, but the position certainly came with its benefits. Hob had always been a thief. When his father drank himself to death after his mother died of consumption when Hob was ten, heâd had to learn hard and fast how to survive on Londonâs streets if he didnât want to be caught and put into a work house. Heâd met enough kids on the street whoâd been there and afterwards preferred the streets. So Hob kept his head low and became a shadow, waiting patiently for his chance, picking pockets with a skill he was envied for. He was also smart and could charm and talk his way out of a scrap with a compelling smile. Hob learned that people generally underestimated a child with an honest face like his. When he grew older, his friends told him he had puppy dog eyes, meaning to insult him jokingly, but Hob only smiled and counted himself very lucky to have been well equipped by nature to fool the next bobby who tried to catch him red-handed. The older he got the more ambitious and daring he got in his attempts to steal from the wealthy. He and his few trusted friends got themselves a reputation before long, and rather than being pushed into the Thames for infringing on territory, the established gangs of London took to hiring them to stick out their necks for them. After a few years of this, Hob had done quite a bit of business for a few of Londonâs finest criminally inclined people â meaning finding and bartering artifacts, antiques and rare pieces of art the rich were grappling and the museums crying over. After a time he knew all the black market sellers, all the ship captains, all the art dealers, and he made a name for himself in certain circles with his persistence, patience and diligence. Burgess had contacted him two years ago and asked him to find a rare book for him â the Magdalene Grimoire. Hob had found the book easily enough â it belonged to the British Museum. Not an easy target to steal from, so Hob rather used subterfuge to infiltrate the museum staff and find out who could be compromised.
Mr John Hathaway was a nervous, sad wreck of a man since his son had died in the war overseas, something he had in common with Hobâs newest employer, as it turned out. Hob had made introductions, and couldnât even take credit for the rest, because Hathaway had turned the book over himself after whatever Burgess promised him. Hob had not been privy to that conversation.
Afterwards, Burgess had asked him if he wanted to work for him exclusively, and Hob had accepted immediately when the man handed him 100 pounds as if it wasnât a common manâs yearly income.
For the last two years Hob had helped track down various artifacts for Burgess â necklaces, bottled body parts, ancient scrolls, even a supposed angelâs feather â a lot of occult stuff that Hob had simply shrugged about. If his employer was so bored that becoming a practitioner of dark magic amused him, who was Hob to say anything? He was being paid very well and didnât care. It was all nonsense anyway, he thought. Until the first man started to get up again after being clearly stabbed to death. Hob knew, he had done the stabbing. The bastard had tried to hurt his friend, Polly, and Hob couldnât have that. The fight had turned rough and although Hob didnât enjoy killing, if it was him or the other one the choice was clear. So he knew that the guy was dead, should be dead â and still he coughed, and got up, and looked around and down at himself in confusion.
Hob had grabbed his friend and ran. After that, the whispers of dead people not staying dead grew louder in the city, until the newspapers printed about it. Until the dead could no longer be ignored, huddling in the streets and on churchyards.
Burgess had made Hob his security guard at that time. Hob had accepted this offer as well. The manor was away from London and safe and it was a comfortable job until this madness settled, he thought. He would wait, patient as ever. Instead, it got only worse.
When Hob had laid eyes on the three newcomers last night, he had at first been annoyed. More tragic pilgrims, come to ask the magus for refuge. Burgess rarely granted it and people were sent away in droves, crying and begging. These would probably be no different and Hob pitied the two women and their companion. Hob had looked at him a bit longer than was maybe appropriate but the man had fascinated him instantly. He was barefoot and wore a long cream-colored coat that didnât fit him well. Underneath he wore what looked like nothing but a black sheet of fabric, wrapped around him like a toga. Had the man been robbed? It happened all the time these days, and especially if one looked like he would be blown over by a strong gust of wind. This man certainly looked frail and yet his eyes were a stormy piercing blue that looked back at Hob with defiance, as if daring him to pity him. His skin was as white as marble, his hair like an unruly nest of ravenâs feathers. Hob had felt his heart beat a bit faster at the manâs unwavering gaze and quickly turned to handling the determined small woman and her demands.
