I’m hardcore anti-censorship and don’t believe that preferences in romantic or sexual fantasy in fiction has an exact relationship to what we want in real life…. But it seems strange and anti-intellectual to argue that media *never* has that influence. Like, just divorce this from arguments about porn and “problematic shipping” for a second. There are a ton of people, of multiple genders but especially over age 20 or so they’re more likely to be men, who seem to think that if they’re friendly enough to someone of their preferred gender (or really, opposite gender, since this is based on an “everyone of my preferred gender is a potential partner” norm that people into the same gender just can’t assume) they’ll eventually reciprocate their feelings, or they *should*. The Nice Guy thing. Do you really think that the numerous romantic comedies that have that as a dynamic, or the video games whose “romance” mechanic is “give them gifts and talk to them enough and they’ll eventually be a love interest possibility,” doesn’t play into that at least somewhat? Like, we’re all smart enough to know that Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon aren’t like real life romance, I think…. But did you know that yet when you were 13? Do you think *everybody* who plays those knows that?

Take it out of the context of romance at all. If you’re a lawyer, how many times have you heard people who have misconceptions about what you do based on legal dramas? Or for doctors, about medical dramas?

And that doesn’t put any responsibility on the creators to change stuff (I mean, the “reward = romance” thing is just a very easy video game mechanic for instance, and programming in something that more closely resembles actual romance would be impossible, and it’s not like it’s any less realistic than like, how you fish or mine or farm in those games), it’s still on consumers to think critically (again, that the video game that has you fighting slime monsters in mines or where you grow broccoli in just a few days and harvesting crops is just one click isn’t going for realism perhaps. People wring their hands about the general popularity of farming games like it’s yearning for some political/cultural thing, and forget that the specific fantasy is it without all the toil. Just like plenty of people love playing restaurant games who work(ed) in restaurants irl and hate(d) it). But like, we talk about “society” influencing people in terms of stuff like racism and sexism. Mass media is part of society. This is why a lot of feminist criticism over the years has focused on critiquing broad patterns that recur in media, to the point that they become societal trends — and a lot of people take this in *unconsciously*.

I think what that one earlier anon meant with “especially with porn” is that porn shouldn’t be like, an exception to this. It’s kind of weird how people who are all for media analysis of problematic patterns in other kinds of media think it suddenly doesn’t apply if it’s media designed for the purpose of getting off. And sure plenty of us are into things in porn we have no desire for IRL (I love mpreg and I love kidfic, I have less than zero desire to have kids and especially be pregnant irl, to the point that it’s actually a squick for me in *het* fic), plenty of people are into specifically the fantasy version minus the Issues they have with that stuff in the IRL version. But… that’s not everyone. Some people’s porn preferences do match up with what they’re into irl. Even when they don’t, as with the loli example there’s often some other particular reason they like that

I don’t think it’s right to go around asking strangers to go around explaining their porn preferences to you, but I think it’s fair to think about it yourself (in the interest of introspection if nothing else), and to critique broad patterns in fandom, same as we would for any other kind of media. Once a normal boy who grew up in the streets of London, England during the early Victorian era — Peter Pan took it upon himself to remain eternally youthful and escape the responsibilities of adulthood. He never excelled too well in academics at school, and was therefore destined for a life in the factories like his father. One night after turning to the ripe age of eighteen, Peter wished to runaway and be taken somewhere he would never have to grow up.

From the darkness, his shadow animated into a sentient being with a mind of its own. The dark figure beckoned Peter to follow it and led him to an alley where another peculiar tiny creature with dragonfly wings greeted them. A healthy sprinkle of pixie dust later, and Peter gained the ability to fly. Feet magically lifting off the ground, Peter soared high in the sky and away from the house he once called home. The trio of now best friends continued flying through the night and across the vast sea until they saw an island in the distance.

There, Peter remained for months. With his shadow and pixie companion's help, he not only survived — but thrived in the island. Still, he couldn't help but feel lonely and miss his parents. Not only that, he craved friends to hangout and forge strong bonds with. So, he left Neverland in what felt like an eternity to find those willing to be a part of his adventures. He'd travel back to London and frequent locale universities to invite young men who also want an escape to join him. Peter didn't discriminate, either. He happily welcomed older and more mature chaps in need of a good time away from the obligations of daily life.

Eventually, Peter assembled a solid retinue of men of different ages to be his 'lost boys'. Together, they reveled in the freedom and much needed respite provided in abundance by the island. So long as they stayed within the borders of Neverland, none of them aged a bit. It was an eternal adventure of flirting with mermaids, fighting pirates, and finding magical treasures.

Over the years, some of his lost boys began to yearn for home. They missed their old lives and families, which Peter often had a hard time understanding. Nevertheless, he didn't forbid them from leaving and frequently had to depart from the island to find a replacement. This carried on for decades. Sometimes, Peter is away for months in search for the perfect candidate or distracted trying to recruit a particular man into joining his motley crew. Alas, Peter's immortality is suppressed whenever he's in the outside world. This prolonged absence from Neverland caused him to age until he was in his early twenties.

Now with easier access to so many more New Worlds both magical and mundane thanks to Jack's enchanted beans, Peter is more determined than ever to bring together the perfect group of lost boys.

the  battles  raged,  and  crínán's  rage  and  lust  for  power  grew  ever  fiercer.  desperate  to  claim  victory,  he  sought  out  a  dark  witch  deep  within  the  ancient  forest  of  the  highlands.  she  was  a  mysterious  figure,  a  woman  of  shadow  and  power,  known  for  her  wicked  sorcery.  with  cold  eyes  that  saw  through  to  his  hungry  soul,  she  listened  to  his  demands.  crínán  wanted  strength  beyond  that  of  any  mortal—strength  that  would  allow  him  to  crush  his  brothers  and  take  the  kingdom  by  force.

the  witch,  seeing  the  darkness  within  him,  agreed  to  his  request,  but  she  warned  him  that  this  gift  would  come  with  a  price.  but  the  kind,  blinded  by  ambition,  ignored  her  words  and  accepted  the  deal.  she  handed  him  a  potion,  a  brew  thick  and  black  as  night,  and  as  he  drank  it,  a  terrible  change  came  over  him.

his  body  twisted  and  stretched,  his  bones  grew  and  snapped,  his  hands  became  paws  with  claws  sharp  as  daggers,  and  his  face  turned  into  a  monstrous  snout.  he  roared  in  agony  and  fury,  but  the  spell  had  worked  -  granting  him  the  strength  he  desired  —  he  had  become  a  gigantic,  ferocious  bear,  towering  over  any  man,  but  he  had  also  lost  his  humanity.  consumed  by  his  thirst  for  power,  he  had  become  a  beast,  cursed  to  walk  the  earth  in  monstrous  form,  unless  he  mended  the  broken  bond  with  his  brothers.

with  the  strength  of  ten  men  or  more,  the  bear  wreaked  havoc  across  the  land,  his  brothers  were  no  match  for  his  might  and  one  by  one  -  he  crushed  them,  leaving  the  kingdom  broken  and  bleeding,  sinking  into  darkness.  the  years  turned  into  centuries,  and  the  legend  of  Mor'du—  the  king  who  had  become  a  black  bear—  grew  into  a  tale  told  to  frighten  children  and  grown  men  alike.  he  became  a  shadow  in  the  woods,  a  creature  spoken  of  only  in  whispers.  some  said  his  eyes  still  held  the  rage  of  the  man  he  had  once  been,  burning  with  the  regret  of  his  choice.

generations  later,  in  the  kingdom  of  dunbroch,  a  new  story  was  unfolding.  a  headstrong  prince  named  ivor  -  with  fiery  red  hair  and  a  spirit  to  match,  had  set  out  to  change  her  fate.  in  his  struggle  to  save  his  family  and  his  kingdom,  ivor  encountered  the  same  witch  who  had  once  cursed  mor'du.

he  escaped his mighty claws,  but  when  they  met  again half a lifetime later -- ivor no longer the young fearless prince he met once upon a time ,  mor'du  would  not  give  up  that  easily.  this  time  they  fought  in  a  stone  circle  -  the  one  mor'du  performed  his  spell  in  and  exchanged  his  humanity  for  power  and  greed,  his  soul  bound  to  the  stones  forever.  together  with  his  brothers,  they  took  the  great  black  bear  down,  squashed  under  one  of  the  stones  -  the  very  stones  that  held  onto  his  humanity  for  centuries.  a  change  in  the  air  shook  the  earth  and  a  bright  glow  eradicated  off  the  fallen  giant,  but  when  it  subsided  they  would  no  longer  find  a  bear  slain  underneath.  instead,  they  found  a  man  -  drenched  in  bright  blue  light  -  just  like  the  wisps. 

he  ..was  alive. 

his  heart  drowned  in  sorrow  and  regret,  his  eyes  glazed  over  and  empty,  though  at  the  same  time…  gratitude. 

the  curse  was  lifted  ...it  seemed  and  after  centuries  of  hopeless  wandering,  the  prince  was  human  once  more, even if lost in a time and world that was not his own.  or  so  they  thought.  the  bond  with  his  brothers  could  never  be  mended,  so  regardless  of  his  very  soul  being  back  where  it  belonged,  every  full  moon,  mor'du  would  return  and  wreak  havoc  upon  everybody  in  his  path. 

maybe  one  day  he  could  earn  their  forgiveness,  in  life…  or  in  death.
