First of all, I would like to thank you all for this amazing year! It's been a pleasure meeting you all and I'm beyond thankful for your support.

The British monarch owns some of the collection in right of the Crown and some as a private individual. TV Guide  -  November 2 - 8, 1963
Wilfred Bailey Everett Bixby III (January 22, 1934 – November 21, 1993) professionally known as Bill Bixby, Film and television actor, director, producer, and frequent game-show panellist.
Bixby's career spanned more than three decades, including appearances on stage, in films, and on television series. He is known for his roles in the CBS sitcom My Favorite Martian as Tim O'Hara, in the ABC sitcom The Courtship of Eddie's Father as Tom Corbett, in the NBC crime drama series The Magician as stage Illusionist Anthony Blake, and the CBS science-fiction drama series The Incredible Hulk as Dr. David Banner.  He also worked with Mariette Hartley in his final series, Goodnight, Beantown,  (Wikipedia)
Herman Raymond Walston (November 2, 1914 – January 1, 2001) was an American actor and comedian, well known as the title character on My Favorite Martian. His other major film, television, and stage roles included Luther Billis (South Pacific), Mr. Applegate (Damn Yankees), Orville J. Spooner (Kiss Me, Stupid), J. J. Singleton (The Sting), Poopdeck Pappy (Popeye), Mr. Hand (Fast Times at Ridgemont High), Candy (Of Mice and Men), Glen Bateman (The Stand), and Judge Henry Bone (Picket Fences).
The success of My Favorite Martian typecast Walston and he had difficulty finding serious roles after the show's cancellation. He returned to character actor status in the 1970s and 1980s, and guest starred in such series as Custer, The Wild Wild West, Love, American Style, The Rookies, Mission: Impossible, Ellery Queen, The Six Million Dollar Man, Little House on the Prairie, and The Incredible Hulk, again with Bixby, in which Walston played Jasper the Magician in an episode called "My Favorite Magician".
In 1984, Walston played a judge on an episode of Night Court. Six years later, he made a guest appearance on an episode of L.A. Law. He later was hired for the role of Judge Henry Bone on Picket Fences; the character was originally a recurring role, but Walston proved to be so popular the character was later upgraded to a starring role.
He appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation as Boothby, head groundskeeper at Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, and reprised the role twice on Star Trek: Voyager.
In 1988, he guest starred in an episode of the popular horror-fantasy show Friday the 13th: the Series, as a bitter, elderly comic-book artist who uses a demonically cursed comic book to transform himself into a killer robot and murder his erstwhile enemies.
Walston received three Emmy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work on Picket Fences, winning twice, in 1995 and 1996. CBS cancelled the show after four seasons in 1996. Walston made a guest appearance in an episode of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman entitled "Remember Me", in which he portrayed the father of Jake Slicker, who was stricken with Alzheimer's disease.
Walston played Grandfather Walter Addams in Addams Family Reunion (1998).  He appeared in the Touched by an Angel episode, "The Face on the Barroom Floor", which aired on October 15, 2000.
Walston made a cameo in the 7th Heaven episode, "One Hundred", which aired on January 29, 2001, four weeks after his death. (Wikipedia)

On June 17, 2015, a 21-year-old white man named Dylann Roof entered the Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and sat in on a Bible study session for about an hour before opening fire on the other participants, killing nine people. All of the worshippers were Black.
Roof kept a personal website where he posted images of himself alongside Confederate flags and icons and expressed racist views. Before the Charleston church massacre, he uploaded a manifesto to the site in which he praised George Zimmerman for shooting Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black 17-year-old. Prior to the attack, he allegedly told friends that he hoped to incite a “race war.”
The nine victims killed in the shooting were Cynthia Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lance, Depayne Middleton-Doctor, Tywanza Sanders, Daniel Simmons, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Myra Thompson, and Clementa C. Pinckney, the senior church pastor and a South Carolina state senator. Five people survived the shooting.
The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, known as “Mother Emanuel” to many, is one of the largest and most storied Black congregations in the South. Just six years after its founding in 1816, the church was burned down after it was discovered that Denmark Vesey, one of the church’s founders and ministers, was planning a large-scale rebellion. Black churches were outlawed in Charleston in 1834, but after the Civil War ended in 1865, the Emanuel Church reopened.
President Barack Obama delivered the eulogy at the funeral service for the Rev. Pinckney, and the church has continued to be a strong presence within the Black community in Charleston. The Rev. Anthony Thompson, whose wife Myra was killed in the shooting, said the racial attack “forced a reckoning with Charleston's history, and demeanor.” He has devoted himself to communal truth-telling initiatives ever since, inviting community members to engage in a more honest conversation about Charleston’s history and legacy of racial violence.

I hope this isn't annoying you please ignore if it is, but do you have any paintings/fanart/photos/tv or movie references for what Evelyn would look like? I absolutely love how you describe her, but i have aphantasia so i can't for the life of me picture her properly. I love making moodboards and things to use as a guide, so if you have any pictures/fanart you dont mind sharing I would really love that :))
It's not annoying my goodness!! You're so kind! I'm glad you've been liking the fic!
I have no eye for colour pallets or moodboards however, but I do like to save photos and paintings etc. when the mood strikes me. So I have a lot. None are super exact truly, but it was more for fashions and the ~vibes~
So! Evelyn! Female England. Featuring babies! Long post ahoy!
17th century Eva pre Civil War featuring her eldest boys...
Tumblr media
- A Genoese Noblewoman and Her Son by Anthony van Dyck c.1626 - Detail from The Balbi Children by Anthony van Dyck c.1625 - Lady Frances Cranfield, Lady Buckhurst, later Countess of Dorset by Anthony Van Dyck, 1637
Moving through to the 18th century... When you start the century with one baby and swap it for another...
Tumblr media
- Jane Duchess of Gordon and son George by George Romney, 1778 - Mrs. John Montresor by John Singleton Copley, 1778 (I had to go for this one - the red [riding] coat right?) - Lady Boston, nee Christian Methuen by George Romney, c1775 - A Lady, said to be Madame Danloux, nursing her child in a drawing room by François Guillaume Ménageot, c1785
Then the baby girl arrives and Oz isn't that good at studying and the entire time they're playing house there's a real feeling of 'this is just off' for about a hundred or so years. Mama's playing the role very well but boy is it exhausting.
Tumblr media
- Mother with infant by James Francis Day, 1863 - Sewing on a button, Edouard Frère, 1882 - A Testing Question, Frederick Morgan, 1892 - Summer Hours of Childhood by Charles Lucy, 1869
More individual solo shots of art that I picked for melancholia and goth auras...
Tumblr media
- Girl in Green by Sara Hayden, 1899 - On the Seashore by George Elgar Hicks, 1879 - Preparing for the Ball by Viktor Schramm, 1898 - The Pearl Necklace by Henry Tonks, c.1905 - Unknown Painting by Richard Johnson, c2000 - Little Brother & Little Sister by A. Rackham, 1917
And finally some actual photographs of assorted models, actresses and rich ladies from the late 19th century who I particularly was like yup. For modern day, someone like Imogen Poots I think could be neat. She has rabbit teeth, looks perpetually tired with racoon eyes and has wild hair.
Tumblr media
My intention is that by the end of the 19th century bit by bit the constraints are cracking and the poison is leaking out just in time for the World Wars. Still purging in the years that followed... nearly there by the end of the millennium. Just stop smoking hen.

I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY (2022)
Starring Naomi Ackie, Stanley Tucci, Nafessa Williams, Tamara Tunie, Ashton Sanders, Clarke Peters, Bria Danielle Singleton, Daniel Washington, Kris Sidberry, Marilyn Swick, Naheem Garcia, Greg Roman, Alana Monteiro, Heidi Garza, Tanner Beard, Jennifer Ellis, JaQuan Malik Jones, Alexa Renée, Courtney Caruso, Dave Heard, Rob Lévesque and Lance A. Williams.
Screenplay by  Anthony McCarten.
Directed by Kasi Lemmons.
Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. 146 minutes. Rated PG-13.
Whitney Houston had a fascinating, exciting, tragic, complex life. There is a whole lot of stuff that went on in her life – both the highs and the lows – probably more than can be explored in a movie. Even a relatively long two-and-a-half-hour movie.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody rushes through the years; the accomplishments, the dramas, the scandals, the complications and the early death of arguably the defining singing voice of her generation, giving the film the feel of a greatest hits medley. However, many of those hits are pretty terrific, so it’s often very entertaining. You just never feel like you’re getting the whole song.
Interestingly, I Wanna Dance With Somebody seems to revolve around a single performance of Houston’s – a live medley of “I Loves You Porgy” “And I’m Telling You That I’m Not Going” and “I Have Nothing” which she did on the 1994 American Music Awards. The film starts and ends on the performance, and also mentions it several times throughout the run of the film as proof that Houston was the greatest voice of her time.
I’m not going to lie, I’ve never heard of this particular performance, and while it was stunningly performed (the film uses Houston’s vocals over the lip syncing by star Naomi Ackie) I’m not sure it was the most memorable performance in Houston’s career, not by a long shot.
And that is what I Wanna Dance With Somebody does best – reminding us of Houston’s music and performances, all with newly remixed and powerful sound.
Actress Ackie does a terrific job in portraying the different eras of Houston’s life – recreating performances, capturing her cadences and attitudes (although she doesn’t exactly look like Houston) and capturing her highs and lows.
It falls into a pretty standard music biofilm structure – the rise and fall of a terrific performer, from obscurity to the top of the world, touching on many milestones and showing the temptations of great fame.
As an officially sanctioned biofilm, I Wanna Dance With Somebody slightly pulls its punches on some of the darker aspects of her life. For example, they toy with the longtime gossip that Houston was gay or bi, and possibly involved with her longtime best friend Robin (Nafessa Williams), teasing the possibility of a relationship – even showing them cohabitation, kissing and Robin getting jealous – before pulling away from the possibility quickly and pretty definitively, coyly suggesting that maybe they were mainly just besties after all.
They also have ex-husband Bobby Brown played in a cartoonishly stupid way, almost feeling like a Chris Rock parody of the guy. Now, no one has ever claimed that Bobby Brown was a deep, thoughtful guy, but I have to believe that he was not the gangsta Casanova loser they play him off as. After all, even the film Whitney acknowledges that the drug addiction that ended up taking her life was not Brown’s fault and he got too much blame for it. (Although, in fairness, he certainly didn’t help…)
Also, super producer Clive Davis (as played by Stanley Tucci) is played out as an exceedingly sweet, magnanimous, supportive force in Whitney’s life. Maybe that is even true, but it’s hard to believe that in a relationship that lasted for well over three decades that there wasn’t some acrimony between them ever. However, the super-nice Clive may just be explained by the fact that Davis is one of the producers of the film.
Also, much like Davis, occasionally the film tends to reduce the diva to her sales figures. In the end credits chyron talking about her life, career and death, they make a point to say how she was the only woman to ever to be diamond-certified three times (her 1985 debut album, 1987’s Whitney and the 1992 The Bodyguard soundtrack). Now, I’m a music nerd, so I know what diamond-certified means (ten million albums sold, also known as ten-times platinum), but I’m pretty sure that stat will go right over the head of most casual fans. More to the point, is it really fair to reduce Houston’s career to units sold, or even awards she won, which the end credit chyron also lists faithfully?
Whitney Houston was much more complicated than that. And while I Wanna Dance With Somebody tries its best to capture the essence of Whitney, it comes off a bit more like the Cliff Notes version of her life. It hits on most of the highlights and lowlights, but it doesn’t explore most of them deeply enough. Perhaps this would have worked better as a limited series for TV or streaming, where the story and characters would have room to breathe and get more in depth.
But, man, what a soundtrack. Just hearing these songs again in full cinema sound is definitely worth the price of a ticket.

The Deliverance (2024)
Tumblr media
In an interview with The Film Stage, The Deliverance director Lee Daniels essentially confesses that he found the horror aspect of this film hard, that he didn’t want to add the tension you’d expect from an exorcism story and that the familial drama was what interested him the most. Well, it shows. There have been many Exorcist clones over the years. Even when movies aren’t directly copying the 1973 horror classic, they almost always duplicate its foul-mouthed child, style of creepy voices, contortionist crab walks/rotating heads, etc. Though this is not technically a ripoff of The Exorcist, it often feels like its Blackenstein equivalent.
Ebony Jackson (Andra Clay) moves into a new home with her mother, Alberta (Glenn Close), and three children: Nate (Caleb McLaughlin), Shante (Demi Singleton) and Dre (Anthony B. Jenkins). Things have always been tense within the family. Ebony does not get along with her children’s father and he's serving in the military overseas. Ebony and Alberta have a strained relationship stemming from childhood trauma and abuse. Then there's Ebony’s alcoholism and her history of violence towards her kids. Child Protective Services caseworker Cynthia (Mo’Nique) regularly visits to confirm the children are safe. When Dre becomes possessed by a demon, Ebony must someone who can deliver him from the evil force because everyone will assume what's happening is her fault.
The Deliverance showcases one of the messiest families cinema has produced in years. Ebony fights to keep her children, but the argument for why they should be taken away is as easy as 1 + 1. She’s foul-mouthed, racist, violent, without class and once you get a few drinks in her, she might as well be possessed by Satan. A deeply cynical woman, she just barely escapes the “you had this coming” sentiment because it isn’t her who gets possessed. Things are so bad at the Jackson household a part of you thinks “If they can banish this demon, this ordeal might be the best thing that happened to these people”. I'm making a joke but it’s also true. You can tell Nate and Shante’s hearts are filling with the same kind of hatred their mother has for Alberta. Only supernatural intervention could prevent the cycle from repeating itself. Alberta is a real piece of work too, showing up at the cancer care facility with her shirt half undone so she can get the male orderlies salivating - with extra attention directed towards the Black ones. She has cancer so there’s a part of you that thinks “Well, do what you love because you never know when you might go” but you also think “Damn, woman! Tone it down a bit!”
You can see why the actors were drawn to these roles. These excessively messy characters give the performers a lot to work with and they're up to the task. It’s the rest of the movie that lets them down. When Dre starts acting strangely, there’s a part of you that steps away from the film and starts thinking about the fact that this is based on true events (the Ammons haunting case). What happens in this film is clearly supernatural - people shapeshift, there’s a spontaneous fire around Alberta’s crucifix and Dre walks backward up a wall at one point - but if the real-life family was anything like what's shown here, the children were probably just acting up and the unexplained violence towards them surely came from one of Ebony’s drunken binges. Not helping most of this feel made up or exaggerated is the Pentecostal pastor who says she can help Ebony get rid of the demon with a deliverance prayer - not an exorcism -, which anyone can do, not just someone with special training and/or qualifications. Aside from that detail, what's the difference between an exorcism and a deliverance prayer? Beats me, and I’ve seen the movie.
I wish The Deliverance was a few minutes longer or had an epilogue because so many big events during the conclusion aren’t properly acknowledged. What goes on here would've made the front page but instead of dealing with the aftermath, the movie quickly wraps up the dramatic elements and then ends. Lee Daniels is much more interested in dealing with real-world events - Ebony’s alcoholism, her relationship with her mother and children, how she will convince her case worker that she’s fit to keep custody of them - than anything supernatural, which is both frustrating and a letdown. We came to see an “exorcism” movie. Deliver. Commit to your premise. While you’re at it, give us something new - besides the character moments - and try to actually scare us, ok? The strong performances and committed cast only make The Deliverance more disappointing. (September 13, 2024)
