1823 Aug., Sun. 10

In the stable 1/2 hour. Put cotton wool into my clean stays. A tedious in pulling out, that is, as it were, carding it –
Went down to breakfast at 9 35/60 – Came upstairs at 10 1/2 from then to 11 3/4, and having read 1 1/4 hour before breakfast, got thro’ the 1st 76 pages of no. 15 (the last) of the Retrospective review – Good article on Donne’s poems –
At 11 3/4 went downstairs and my aunt and I read aloud the service – From one till after four having looked in Lempriere's dictionary for Philaenis, turned to Martial’s referred. This led to my looking over all his epigrams, which led to my incurring a cross just before I went downstairs. See page fifty of the retrospective number fifteen, imaginary letter from Sappho to Philaenis. This was the origin of the mischief. I thought of my unworthiness afterwards and always lament it. Just after, I read Rousseau's account of his masturbation in the beginning of his Confessions –
Went downstairs at 4 40/60 – My aunt and I read the evening service, and I read aloud sermon 48 volume 2 my uncle’s collection – Talking to my uncle and aunt all the evening –
Very rainy day – Barometer 1/2 degree above changeable Fahrenheit 57º at 9 p.m. Wrote the whole of this page during supper and went down (always come up at 9) at 9 55/60 – Having had my hair curled as usual – Came up to bed at 11 1/4 – Brought up Ælian, turned to libro xii. 19. περι Σαπϕȣς [Σαπϕοῦς] got into bed in 20 minutes at 2 or 3 minutes before it struck 12 –

Note from transcriber: The piece that appeared in the Retrospective Review didn’t contain Donne’s letter from Sappho to Philænis, as it would “not exactly bear quotation”, but the mention of it is what sent Anne on a hunt for more information.

Movement Notations :
Suite by Chance, Merce Cunningham.
“The first movement was andante; the second movement was very slow; the third movement a little faster; the last movement "had a lot of unison, hard, turning, fast movement." For this dance a large series of charts were made: a chart for movement, time, space (floor patterns) and chance procedures manipulated materials, producing maximum play of possibilities. "Suite by Chance" was previewed at Dancers Studio, NYC in the winter of 1952. The dancers at that time were Merce Cunningham, Sudie Bond, Jo Anne Melsher, Marianne Preger-Simon and Remy Charlip. The score was written by Christian Wolff. It was his first commission with the company. For magnetic tape it was, likely, the first time "electronic music" was used for dance.” (https://www.mercecunningham.org/index.cfm/choreography/dancedetail/params/work_ID/49/)

Sinn einen „ehrenvollen Tod“ sterben lassen will.
Völlig neu war mir, daß die Serie tatsächlich in fünfzig Länder verkauft werden konnte! Tja, made in Germany halt.
