It was quite a hell-like weekend. I worked on two conventions, at first day as an assistant for my friend who is photographer and on second, I gave a lecture about history and culture of XIX century in shoujo-manga… so without any digression I want to talk about culture Time for little vocal headcanons on a few Anne Rice’ characters (everyone sings in my world)
Domenico. Light and agile voice, focused more on technic and position than on attack and energy, perfect for all types of arias, especially G. F. Handel and Agostino Steffani, remind me of Yana Dyakova and her «what like it’s hard?» moment on every coloratura.
I've seen her in person when she was in tour in my city with «Le nozze di Figaro» and sing Cherubino (obviously, he's little devil). She was brilliant!
youtube
Tonio. Full and rich voice, excellent breath control that in combined into ultimate R. Broschi performer. I imagine his voice sounding like Cecilia Bartoli, his affection, energy and emotionality is his strength as well as his artistry and feel of the character
(love her costume and I think it'd suits Tonio well).
Yes, the same aria, on a purpose to compare their technics like it’s compared in books.
youtube
Armand. As we know from books his voice is seductive. For me it means a half covered technic (how how my professor used to call it) that make voice sound warmer and softer despite of emotions and attack. And only one singer comes into my mind when I think about this technic – Marianne Crebassa. I can’t choose one aria, so here’s playlist. Mozart's «Lucio Silla» is in fact so Armand coded. No wonder that it was my obsession in teen ages.
And finally, Marius. Just Thomas Hampson. Here’s trio from «Les Contes d’Hoffman» (Thomas Hampson is Coppeluis, Kate Lindsey is Nicklausse and Vittorio Grigolo is Hoffman). By the way Kate Lindsey' voice is my headcanon for Rickardo and Vittorio Grigolo' for Mael.
youtube
Let me know what you think about Anne's characters voices, maybe you also have headcanons with certain singers' voices?

Speaking of hobbies...
"Mary Martha Plummer and me started collecting coffin-plates at the same time but she soon got ahead of me...so many of her relation died, not to speak of her three children. She's got more coffin-plates than anyone in these parts. I didn't seem to have much luck but I've got a full mantelpiece at last. My cousin, Thomas Bates, was buried last week and I wanted his wife to give me the coffin-plate, but she had it buried with him. Said collecting coffin-plates was a relic of barbarism. She was a Hampson and the Hampsons were always odd. Well, where was I?"
Anne really could not tell Mrs. Mitchell where she was this time. The coffin-plates had dazed her."
Anne of Ingleside by L. M. Montgomery

I'm honestly really into the idea that Jelly and Asparagus are kinda just...there in regards to their theatrical talent. You'd think, with both their parents being stars in their own right, that they'd also be quadruple threats - at least that's the expectation- but they aren't great dancers (for varying reasons), they're only so so actors, have never interacted with an instrument that didn't protest, neither are particularly showy cats, etc, etc.
And you think huh, well that's too bad. The Theatre Cat genes didn't really translate down all that strongly. Shame.
But then they open their mouths - and you're like ah...yes, there it is. There's the ticket. Because their singing voices are beautiful in that effortless born with perfect pitch kinda way.

Ready to kick-off the Season!
These are the operas, ballets and concerts I will treat myself this year (so far, at least) at the beautiful Teatro Colón:
Rigoletto
Don Quixote
London Symphony Orchestra (with Sir Simon Rattle at the helm!). When i go, they’ll be playing Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.
No Tenors Allowed (that’s right! The lovely Thomas Hampson and Luca Pisaroni will be visiting Buenos Aires and I wouldn’t miss them for the world!)
Anne-Sophie Mutter with The Mutter Virtuosi (playing Bach, Vivaldi and Mendelssohn).
English Baroque Soloists (John Elliot Gardiner along with the Monteverdi Choir) with works by Monteverdi, Scarlatti, Purcell and Carissimi.
Swan Lake
This year is truly filled with treats! <3

The new heir to the Manor of Marbeck had been found -- an American from the Rocky Mountains! But it was, to say the least, unfortunate that when he arrived unexpectedly he found an uninvited guest, complete with string tie, high boots and Stetson hat, singing "I'm an old cowhand ... Behold your new lord of the manor! Here I am, straight from those jolly ole Rockies..." This capture features the Adult Women understudies, who would go on to replace the originals. Also includes Left Behind from a Jon Groff concert. A Spring Awakening - Buenos Aires, Argentina - 2010 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  AVI (HD) CAST: Fernando Dente (Melchior Gabor), Florencia Otero (Wendla Bergmann), Federico Salles (Moritz Stiefel), Mariana Jaccazio (Ilse Neumann), Eliseo Barrionuevo (Hanschen Rilow), Leandro Bassano (Ernst Robel), Cristian Centurión (Otto Lämmermeier), Micaela Pierani Mendez (Anna), Julieta Nair Calvo (Thea Rilow), Irene Almas (The Adult Women), Tony Lestingi (The Adult Men) NOTES: Pro-shot with zooms, seems to be multi-camera. There are a lot of heads that were very difficult to work around, but the show is still captured well and the actors are only occasionally blocked for a few seconds at a time. There are some very quick dropouts, but no major blackouts. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes playbill scans. The result is a video that stays in tight shot on the people in question for most of the show and has the shakes to go with it. Sound is great and it’s good to see the Vienna cast. A bunch of clips from the opening night of Sweeney Todd in Manila! Shot 3rd row at the balcony. The phone was in my jacket pocket so I couldn’t see anything and I was scared of getting caught, so a lot is very zoomed and I’m really sorry about that. I absolutely loved the set, it was reimagined into a more modern almost gangster like setting. Shot in 4k on my phone. Please gift out to anyone who asks. Mike Tindall: 'Zara and I are planning to send Mia back to school in June'
Tumblr media
By Eleanor Steafel for The Telegraph
Mike Tindall has spent much of lockdown asking himself a question by now familiar to parents up and down the country: what would a teacher do?
Over the past eight weeks the Tindalls have joined the legions of families juggling homeschooling one child while keeping a toddler occupied, supporting vulnerable loved ones from afar, and trying to get some work done in between it all. With his wife Zara still needing to put in the hours training her horses on the Gatcombe Park estate in Gloucestershire, where they live, the programme of year one classes for their eldest daughter Mia, six, has mainly been shepherded by Mike - to varying degrees of success.
“Zara still has hopes that the horses will get back, they still need training and working on, so I get to be a teacher in the mornings which is sometimes really nice, sometimes really frustrating,” he tells me over Zoom. His Zoom background, incidentally, looks like a rather impressive bookcase but in fact, he reveals with a wry smile, “It’s wallpaper, I’m not that well read.”
The homeschooling, he says, hasn’t always been a walk in the park. “I don’t think any child is a great homeschooler because they definitely listen to other people better than they listen to their parents.
“[Mia] can be brilliant one minute and then something you’ve seen her do a thousand times she’ll just go ‘I don’t know how to do that’ and then you go ‘well I know you do’, and she’ll just say ‘no I don’t’ and then you get frustrated, and you’re trying not to get frustrated.”
Doubtless a familiar scene for the millions of parents currently attempting to provide an education from their kitchen table. “She enjoyed it the first week because it was different being around Mum and Dad all the time,” he says. “But then, ultimately, it’s the same people who are telling her off or telling her what to do and I think then she gets bored of that.”
They are hoping Mia will return to school on June 1st, as per the government’s plan to allow reception, year one and year six children back in the classroom. “The plan is, at the moment, that she would go back but obviously that’s still up in the air,” he says. “Every day you read different things... we’ll just have to wait.
“There is no ideal situation,” he adds, but is encouraged by statistics suggesting children are unlikely to suffer from coronavirus or pass it on to adults. “As long as they’re doing everything they can to make it as safe as possible,” he believes reopening would be a positive step.
Tumblr media
He’s also keen to ensure the girls maintain their independent spirits. “They definitely enjoy having that full time attention, but you also want them to have some independence. That’s the side you want them to keep developing.”
Tindall is also navigating the tricky business of supporting parents who are shielding. His mum and dad live 200-odd miles away in West Yorkshire; his dad, Phil, has lived with Parkinson’s for 17 years, and his mother, Linda, has asthma. They have just started to go for the odd dog walk, but have mainly been confined to the house since mid-March. “It’s just tough... they don’t want to be cooped up but they are very worried about going too far afield and getting too close to everyone else.”
His brother Ian lives a few miles from them, “which is reassuring,” though he worries what would happen if his dad had a fall, as he would be unable to enter their house. “It would be very difficult for my mum to move a dead weight. And if his medication wears off and he can’t move and he’s not in a place where he can sleep then mum’s got to try and get him into bed.
“It’s just very tough for her. It’s pretty much like that most of the time but at least [usually] she knows that she’s got my brother on the doorstep... If you don’t have that it just doesn’t make [for] a very nice environment.”
WhatsApp video calls have taken the place of in-person visits, enabling them to chat to their grandchildren and watch them playing. That is, when Mike can “make them understand how a phone works. Most of the time I’m talking to [Dad’s] head or up his nose. But once you get that sorted you can get the kids on and that’s what they miss.”
However good the technology, however, “you still can’t have a hug,” he says. “Everyone loves a hug.”
Tumblr media
When they are next able to be together, he and Zara’s youngest daughter, Lena (who is about to turn two, and counts Prince Harry among her godparents) will have changed a fair amount in the time since her grandparents last saw her. “It could be six months since their last visit and a lot changes at that age in six months. All you can do is keep taking photos and videos and sending it to them.”
They are yet to see his mother-in-law Princess Anne, who lives in another house on the Gatcombe Estate, in the flesh, but she has been getting to grips with tech, too. Many royal engagements are now being carried out via video: the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge popped up on Zoom to surprise a Bingo session at a care home this week, while even the Queen, who is isolating at Windsor, has got on board, receiving a video call from baby Archie on her birthday.
“It’s busy still for them,” he says of Princess Anne, who appeared on a call with World War II veterans earlier this month to mark VE Day. “She works so hard with all her charities and she’s still got a lot to do, so they’re still in full flow.”
Disappointingly, there have been no Zoom quizzes with the Cambridges or Sussexes, or competitive sourdough action on their WhatsApp group. “Actually it hasn’t been that active,” he laughs. “I think everyone is just getting on with it.”
The former England captain has always worn his royal links lightly - in part, one imagines, thanks to his upbringing. He eschewed university, instead joining Bath Rugby at aged 18 and making his national debut against Ireland at Twickenham in 2000. He now realises that this was the same year his dad started to show the initial symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, although it would be another three years until it was diagnosed.
That delay is one reason he is so determined to raise awareness. His annual celebrity golf day raises around £90,000 every year for the Cure Parkinson’s Trust, and though the tournament can’t happen this year, he is running an online auction to raise funds for the Trust, the NHS and the Matt Hampson Foundation, with proceeds to be split between them.
Tindall hopes he can “raise a fair few coins for the coffers”, particularly for the charity founded by his friend Matt Hampson, who became paralysed from the neck down in a rugby accident in 2005, and is currently in the vulnerable category during lockdown. “He is already permanently on a ventilator with his fractured and dislocated neck, and he doesn’t know if he can go out until there’s a vaccine.”
Tindall seems a pretty level-headed, get on with it sort of man, but admits he has spent the last two months “up and down a little bit,” he says. “You get to spend a lot of time with the kids and family which is unbelievable.” But life is also “in a bit of limbo, and you’re trying to fill the day with positive things to keep you mentally attuned and focused.”
A day always works better, he says, “when there’s a bit of a plan around it so you don’t wallow the hours away”.
He still has “a lot of questions about how things will look after”; both for his beloved sport, and the hospitality company he is an ambassador for. “But,” he admits, “I’m ready to break out - when we’re allowed to.”
Mike Tindall has launched an online auction to raise money for the NHS, The Cure Parkinsons Trust and Matt Hampson Foundation. To bid, visit jumblebee.co.uk/thestadiumoflife

Marriage of Figaro
Tumblr media
I have to say, I’m enjoying the hell out of the Met Figaro that’s streaming right now. Is it my favorite ever cast? No, that will forever belong to the 1990 Deutsche Grammophon recording with Ferruccio Furlanetto, Dawn Upshaw, Thomas Hampson, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Anne Sofie von Otter. But I am utterly delighted and charmed by the performance of this entirely perfect opera, and what more can you ask for?

Romancelandia you don’t have to ask I’m just gonna say it anyway~
Original Post Here
Barbara Cartland: Favourite author?
Courtney Milan.
Alisha Rai: Favorite era? (i.e. when they were written, not when set)
Current! I’m ecstatic to see how much more punk the romance novel genre has become lately- so many authors explicitly talking about race and class and gender and mental health and neurodivergence in so many interesting ways. Independent publishing opening up entirely new avenues which were not recommended for traditional publications. It’s exciting and wonderful.
Eve Dangerfield: Favourite setting for historicals?
Not sure if my opinion matters here because I have read books from very few eras? I think my preferences have moved to mid-to-late Victorian era for England-based books, but what I really want more of is historicals on other (non North American) continents. I badly want to do a romance in Historical India that is not about Englishmen, for example. Like a Muslim and Hindu falling in love during the Aurangazeb era, maybe.
Anne Mather: Favourite contemporary setting/sub-genre
Again, I haven’t really read enough to form a nuanced opinion- when I look for contemporaries, my first priority used to be “does this make me laugh?” Which is um- a relic of a bygone era, because that used to be the only thing I wanted from contemporaries.
Right now, I try to get read more of diverse romance in contemporary eras. Again, including non-American/English nationalities.
Georgette Heyer: Third or first person tense?
Either will do. It’s not really a factor in how much I enjoy a story.
Lisa Kleypas: Hero/ine you’d most like to date & Jane Austen: Hero/ine you’d most like to be friends with
Same answer to both of the above categories. I’ll take anyone who I think is a rational person who forgives misunderstandings ans does not try to actively make them. I’m not really that picky.
Amanda Quick: Hero/ine you most relate to
At the time when I first read it as a dramatic early twenties person, Minerva Lane from Courtney Milan’s The Duchess War spoke to me. There was a lot in there about fear and having to push yourself down fro the sake of survival that was similar to my life back then. I cried a lot when I read that book.
More recently, I really wanted to snuggle up to Verity Plum from Cat Sebastian’s A duke in Disguise because her feelings of independence and placing it above pretty much everything else her life is... yeah. A lot of what Verity says sounds intimately familiar.
Julie Anne Long: Historical or contemporary?
Historical. Given a choice between two books which are similarly positioned in terms of tropes I like and hate, I’ll pick a historical every time.
Mariana Zapata: Open or closed door sex scenes? & Anne Hampson: Erotic or clean romances?
Ninety percent of the time I’m thoroughly disinterested in the sex scenes, and sometimes I am actively annoyed at the many pages of boning happening while the protagonists barely have an emotional connection. That said, there are plenty books which have no sex scenes where I am reduced to gross sobbing because GODDAMMIT THERE IS TOO MUCH SEXUAL TENSION IN THE AIR GIVE ME BONING.
I am still thirsty about Jo Beverley’s The Unwilling Bride. There was so much sexual tension and growth and Lucien was hot as hell but there was no sex scene. //grumbles
Elizabeth Hoyt: Paranormal or science fiction?
I haven’t read that much SF romance, but I’m going to pick it anyway because the usual tropes associated with Werewolves/Vampires bug the crap out of me.
Nalini Singh: Favourite tropes
Both the protagonists have problems with stakes, and one is not there to manic pixie the other. Protagonists have relationships (non-romantic) outside of the romance. Subversions and reversions of gender norms. Banter and Snark. Character tries very very hard to not be emotionally vulnerable, but goddammit there are these stupid feelings.
Alyssa Cole: Least favourite tropes
Prolonged Miscommunication. Slut shaming, especially when coupled with I Have Had So Much Sex and I am So Experienced hypocrisy. Gratuitous sex with no emotional connection. Protagonists immediately throwing over all other friends/family/loved ones for the sake of their new romantic interest. False competence in female characters which immediately get thrown to the wind when the romantic interest comes on scene (Ahem. Never Judge a lady By Her Cover.)
Rose Lerner: Favourite / Least favourite series
Nope.
Sandra Marton: Favourite romantic non-romance or love story
Unspoken Trilogy, by Sarah Rees Brennan. It is in part a fascinating exploration of privacy in a relationship- most of the rest of it is about friendships and platonic relationships. There is also a cult of sorcerers trying to take over the world via human sacrifice but I continue to insist that’s mostly just setting information.
Skye Warren: Any problematic faves?
I have a depressingly large soft spot for anything funny, and I will forgive a lot of despised tropes if a book makes me laugh. I’m easy.
Specific examples: Until You (Judith McNaught), Dragon Shifter Series (Katie MacCalister).
Ainsley Booth: Position on HEAs
I’m cool with those.
Abby Green: Position on HFNs
I like these better than HEAs, because the characters I like tend to be difficult and also fighting various difficult scenarios so it’s far more likely that more problems will pop up in their lives than not.
Kristen Ashley: Position on the “romance novels are feminist” discourse
Conflicted. I think many romances are feminist, but there are an equal number or more which are patently not. Like all other genres, it has to be judged on a book by book basis, not for the genre as a whole.
Carla Kelly: Position on the “calling romance novels trashy is problematic” discourse
Yes. Outright dismissal of an entire genre is just dumb.
Diana Palmer: Position on the “are romance novels porn” discourse
Ha, no. Porn is porn.
Johanna Lindsey: Position on the “romance novels represent the female gaze” discourse
Yes, I guess? In many romances the way men are portrayed is markedly different from the way they are seen in other genres. Again, this is not a universal constant- all romances do not show men in the exact same way.
Also, it is hard to find any other genre with a larger proportion of characters, viewpoints and conflicts centered around women so there’s that.
Mary Jo Putney: Position on the “calling romances without sex ‘clean’ or ‘sweet’ is implicitly slut shaming romances with sex” discourse?
Yes. Just call them romances without sex. What are we, the moral police?
Cara McKenna: What’s your hot take on the “forced seduction” trope?
I understand the time and place where there scenes were popular, and the social norms which prompted them. I’m still uncomfortable with them and there are may things I’d rather read about so I avoid them.
Abigail Barnette: Opinion of Fifty Shades of Grey
Never read it, don’t plan to. Like I said, sex is not really my thing.
Tessa Bailey: Opinion of Twilight
I gobbled these books like a maniac when I first read them and there is a lot of pure entertainment in there and there is so much emotion. That said, they are not quite as interesting on re-reads. :(
Kathleen E. Woodiwiss: Opinion of Pride & Prejudice
I’m not comfortable with the prose, which means i prefer to watch/read adaptations. Most notably the Lizzie Bennet Diaries.
Lynne Graham: Opinion of Harlequin Mills & Boon
Meh.
Tessa Dare: Opinion of bodice rippers
I mean, I would be fine if there wasn’t so much of people causing their own problems by refusing to talk to each other.
Sylvia Day: Opinion of Fabio
I did not even know he was a real person till like- recently.
Roni Loren: Opinion of male romance authors
Yes please. Particularly if they are writing under female pseudonyms. With this, we are getting the exact same thing that female authors did and have to go through- a forced perspective from people oft he other gender. That can only lead to more nuance and acceptance and I am all about that.
Courtney Milan: All-time favourite romance novel & Jana Aston: Favourite contemporary romance & Judith McNaught: Favourite historical romance
Nope.
Alexa Riley: Physical or digital books?
Digital. I tend to make a lot of highlights and notes and that holds up much better with ebooks.
E.L. James: Internal drama or external drama
Characters who are not getting together/along because they can’t communicate with each other are better off not being with each other in the first place. So if that’s what internal drama is then I prefer the external type.
Sarah MacLean: Favourite heroine/s & Maya Rodale: Least favourite heroine/s & Penny Reid: Favourite hero/s & Megan Hart: Least favourite hero/s & Stephenie Meyer: Favourite and least favourite couple/s
I have types rather than specific examples. Most of it has already been detailed out in the tropes questions.
Beverly Jenkins: First romance novel you ever read
Almost Heaven, by Judith McNaught.
Sabrina Jeffries: How long have you been reading romance novels?
14 years or thereabouts.
Loretta Chase: Last romance novel you read
A Duke in Disguise by Cat Sebastian. I’m currently reading An Unconditional Freedom (Alyussa Cole) and Earthrise (MCA Hogarth).
Christina Lauren: Do you need to start a series from the beginning, or can you just dive in anywhere?
Anywhere is fine.
Chuck Tingle: How strong does your HEA have to be?
Not much. See the HFN answer.
Julia Quinn: Underrated author/s & Mary Balogh: Most overrated author/s & Violet Winspear: Most overrated book/s & Sara Craven: Most underrated book/s & Susan Elizabeth Phillips: Best romance by a debut author? & Madison Faye: Favourite romance by a non-romance author
Error Report: Cannot Compute, not enough data.
Nora Roberts: Least favourite hero and heroine archetypes
Eloisa James: What are you reading when you’re not reading romance?
Fantasy, Science Fiction, YA, Comics, Mysteries, Fanfiction, Nonfiction. I’ll read anything.
Teresa Medeiros: Other media property you wish was a romance novel
Idk what this means?
Laura Lee Guhrke: Last romance novel you DNFed
I think it was Elizabeth Kingston’s A Fallen Lady? Which was actually a GOOD book and I skipped ahead to scenes I really wanted to see and those scenes made me cry but also... there was not much about the romance itself that I was really interested in. I loved the heroine to death though.
Cat Sebastian: Alpha, Gamma, or Beta heroes?
Depends on how they are written, but I confess an Alpha is so easily made into an irredeemable dipshit.
Jeannie Lin: Ideal hero and heroine archetypes
Family-minded hero stressed out about taking care of his family. Independent, business minded heroine.
Helen Hoang: Sexually experienced or inexperienced heroines? & Lucy Monroe: Sexually experienced or inexperienced heroes?
Experienced heroines and inexperienced heroes. Play against the type!
Lorraine Heath: When you choose a book do you look for tropes, plots or authors?
Authors, then Tropes. I barely pay attention to plots.
C.D. Reiss: Puns in titles: 👍 or 👎?
YES. I have picked up books purely because of punny titles.
Emily Bronte: Favourite cover designs/illustrations & Maya Banks: Least favourite cover design
I suck a remembering covers so this question is going to get skipped~
Penny Jordan: What would you like to see more of in romance novels?
Diversity and cliche subversions.
Lauren Blakey: What would you like to see less of in romance novels?
Overplayed cliches played in the same way again and again. Relationships based entirely on sex.
Betty Neels: What do you think are the high and low points of the genre?
Highs: Romancelandia is probably the most intelligent and nuanced fandom I have ever been a part of and I have been a part of many fandoms. The genre is very, very diverse and there are so many experiments going on in the fringes. Questions and stories about the emotional components of relationships can never get old because there are too many permutations to explore in a few lifetimes.
Lows: The core of the romance novel industry is still trying desperately to hold on to tropes and themes of older days, many of which are regressive.
Jill Shalvis: Finish this sentence: “Romance novels are__________”
complex social commentaries.
