During the pandemic, managers championed an employee-centric style of leadership that prioritised personal wellbeing and mental health, explains Anna Tavis, a professor of human capital management at New York University. “We were encouraged to bring our whole selves to work,” she says. As a result, many workers are feeling a sense of cognitive dissonance – both those laid off, and others who live in fear of being axed next. Tavis explains that during Covid-19, they were told one thing – but now they’re experiencing something that discredits that narrative. “It’s making leadership seem inauthentic, and that’s understandably having an impact on employee trust in leadership,” she says. Some experts warn that if waves of layoffs like the ones we’ve recently seen – or even just the looming possibility of such cuts – continue to be part of working life, organisational cultures could also deteriorate, having a grim ripple effect on everything from employee engagement and productivity, to physical and mental health. And what’s worse, these conditions could touch generations to come.

Good morning, Merrockites! We are conducting an interest check for the end of the month to coincide with our activity check, so that we can take stock of activity and figure out where we are at with cap, and how many spaces we want to open (if any!) to new writers.
If you would like to keep your roles as they are, without making any changes, please simply like this post. It will be updated to reflect that we have heard from you.
However, if there are any changes that you would like to make to your characters at this point, please contact us so we can help you! This can include, but is not limited to:
a face claim change.
swapping one character for another.
making significant changes to a character (backstory, bio, etc.)
dropping the character.
Because we are not accepting new writers at the time, we are very strongly encouraging all existing writers who are considering picking up new characters to fill wanted connections. Help each other out! We do ask that rules be followed for pick-ups, as usual. (Diversity, regularly replying to starters, active within the last 48 hours, etc.) During this interest check, I will accept any day of the week.
The deadline for this is July 31st, with unfollows for every character/writer that has not interacted with the post on August 1st. We will also be conducting an activity check on August 1st, however, so even if you have liked the post, if you haven't posted within 2 weeks, you will still lose your role, and if you haven't posted within 1 week or haven't followed activity rules (starters, inconsistency, etc.), you will receive a warning. Please interact and post as usual during this time.
Thanks, guys! xx

closed starter, tavi's home archie and octavia @ofwrxth
Stopping by to see his granddaughter is now part of Archie's routine, usually a spot of tea and a quick natter. Maybe a walk and some coffee, depending on the mood but he wouldn't be able to tell you how they ended up doing something else entirely. Archie clutches his phone, the call on speaker to one of Anna Wintour's assistants. "Yes, that's what I said. We've teamed up with SpaceX and NASA, you see. The first intergalactic fashion show." I’m not sure how feasible it would be for Ms. Wintour to attend a space event. Archie shoots Octavia a wide grin, clearing his throat to stop his laugh from escaping. "We’ve thought of everything...here at..." Blast, he's forgotten the bloody fake company name. "We will handle all the logistics, she doesn't need to worry. Tell her to call me, she'll know who I am. You remember my name, yes?" Yes, of course, Hugh Janis. "Precisely. Well, I look forward to hearing from her." Okay, we'll pass this along. Thank you. "Cheerio."
Archie snickers as soon as he precariously presses the end call button, erupting into a louder laugh once he's certain he won't be heard. "Oh, to be a fly on the wall for that conversation." the old poet is practically giddy, sliding his glasses from his nose to his forehead. "There has to be someone else. Who else can we call, Tavs?" he asks excitedly. "Think. Terrible haircuts, annoying faces. Any bloody reason. Oh, what about that..." he waves a hand, forgetting names easier these days. "You know, she was just ghastly to you in Cannes. What's her face? Um...S...T...Tanya?"

Cluttercore: Why The 2010s Blogger Aesthetic Is Back In Style
SOPHIE LOU WILSON LAST UPDATED 7 MARCH 2023, 5:28
f you were online in the early 2010s, you probably remember the emergence of several digital fashion subcultures. Tumblr kids in fishnet tights and scuffed Dr. Martens established their scuzzy, soft grunge aesthetic. Meanwhile, fashion bloggers with Lookbook.nu accounts posted ‘fit pics in skinny jeans, camel coats and heeled ankle boots. Elsewhere, in the blogosphere, teenagers rummaged in their closets to try and recreate avant-garde runway looks or scoured thrift stores for original 1960s shift dresses to pair with clashing knee-highs.
The latter’s mismatched, vintage aesthetic is now experiencing a revival courtesy of it-girls like Bella Hadid, Iris Law and Emma Chamberlain who, lately, have been experimenting with mixed textures, colourful patterns and kitschy accessories that wouldn’t look out of place on a late-00s style blog like Susie Lau’s Style Bubble or Tavi Gevinson’s Style Rookie. Back then, these bloggers and their contemporaries cultivated an anti-minimalist “cluttercore” fashion aesthetic characterised by rainbow hues, mismatched textures and a studied interest in vintage style. Celebrities like Elle Fanning, Florence Welch and Alexa Chung were also known for dressing in this chaotic, twee-adjacent style at the time, while established fashion faces like Iris Apfel and Anna Dello Russo were often credited as formative influences.
At the same time, popular blogging platform Blogger counted more than 2 million blogs related to fashion on their platform alone. Among these were diary-like personal style blogs that mixed backyard self-timer outfit portraits with fashion commentary, life updates, vintage mood boards, scans of scrapbooks, and film stills. The outfits themselves were experimental, involving lots of layering and a mixing of different vintage eras.

Emma Chamberlain at Spotify’s Best New Artist party in 2023.
Fast-forward to now. In February of this year, Chamberlain channeled a familiar aesthetic at Spotify’s Best New Artist party, wearing a cropped cream sweater vest layered over a pale green silk shirt and cream maxi. The neutral colour palette and loose-fitting outfit divided opinion, with some saying it made her look like “a grandmother.” However, similar comments were often directed at teen blogger Gevinson, of Style Rookie, who went as far as dyeing her hair grey in 2010 at the peak of her blog’s fame. In 2011, the then-15-year-old wrote on her blog, “Challenge beauty standards! Screw convention! Look like a grandmother on ecstasy at Fashion Week!” There was an element of anti-fashion to the look which defied style codes often dictated by traditional media at the time that certain colours and patterns must never mix or that young women should dress for the male gaze.
Gevinson, who is better known today for playing Kate Miller in the Gossip Girl reboot, was the blueprint for many of the personal style blogs launched by young people in the first half of the 2010s. Her blog swelled with a distinctive aesthetic, delineated by the radical DIY of ‘90s riot grrrl, the hazy girlhood of Sofia Coppola films and backyard outfit photos in tulle skirts and granny sweaters. Some of the clothes she wore on her blog were even costumes she’d played dress-up with as a child. Others came from her local Salvation Army.
In a TikTok, trend forecaster Mandy Lee said that Gevinson “made a lot of girls question why they seek permission for dressing how they want to,” adding that, “she discusse[d] fashion as a truly joyful self-expression despite being criticised by largely grown-ups.”
Eerie, 25, a fashion designer and zine editor from London, had a personal style blog from 2013 to 2018. They describe their style at the time as an expressive hodgepodge of eras and aesthetics. “I particularly liked ‘40s, ‘60s and ‘70s style mixed in with ‘90s grunge and ‘80s pops of colour and acid wash for quite a lot of my blogging days,” they say. “Each successful look inspired more efforts to experiment, to go further, to try more out-there things. And largely being documented at home, a lot of experimentation was possible without anything such as practicality getting in the way.”
The peak of fashion blogging coincided with the rise of thrifting which is perhaps why so many bloggers adopted such a mismatched vintage aesthetic. Depop launched in 2011 and vintage shopping became increasingly popular in imitation of the decade's it-girls like Chung and Irina Lazareanu.
TikTok encourages a similar amalgamation of vintage eras today as revivals coexist, overlap and feed into each other. Indeed, the style blogger fashion revival itself is perhaps yet another iteration of the ‘true-thousands’ trend, the next step on from ubiquitous Y2K fashions and instead a closer reflection of how people really dressed in the late aughts. For those in their mid-late twenties, it’s a return to the media, culture and aesthetics of their adolescence so, much like the Tumblr revival, it’s also driven by sped-up nostalgia.
The proliferation of different trends and aesthetics popularised by TikTok and existing at the same time provides a rich sartorial landscape for young people to experiment with. Like Tumblr's and Blogger’s fashion communities 10 years ago, TikTok is providing a platform for teenagers to play around with style and have thoughtful discussions about clothes. Get ready with me videos and trend analyses can sometimes cultivate the same intimate feeling as personal style blogs.
After all, the cluttercore and weird girl aesthetics that have flourished on TikTok thanks to the likes of Hadid and Law have much in common with the messy, clashing styles that distinguished 2010s fashion blogs. It feels like the logical endpoint to ‘trendcore’ because, rather than following one trend, style blogging was often about mixing everything together at the same time. This amalgamation of aesthetics blurs the lines of any preconceived fashion guidelines. While the style blogger may be an aesthetic in its own right, it’s also a call to explore personal style beyond the trends fed to us by the algorithm.
There’s a growing nostalgia for the perceived authenticity of fashion blogging. Most of these style bloggers were independent and didn’t plan their content or outfits based on either pleasing algorithms or pleasing other people IRL. The disruptive movement inspired legions of teens around the world to dress up in outfits people at school thought were ‘weird’, start thrifting just before it was popular and have fun with fashion outside of what was considered trendy.
The aesthetic makes a convincing case for finding joy in fashion and experimenting with personal style rather than chasing every new ‘core’ that comes along. It encourages real excitement about getting creative with the clothes you already have in your wardrobe and therein lies the thrill of it.
Blogging encouraged exploration and pulling from fashion and cultural history to create an outfit, applying the same creative thought process that might go into other art forms. The inspiration, often explored in accompanying long-form text, mood board or film stills, was just as important as the finished look.
As the meeting point between Tumblr fashion and the weird girl aesthetic, it’s not hard to see why there’s nostalgia for this subculture of digital fashion history. In a time when trends come and go faster than ever, experimenting with personal style and pushing fashion boundaries can be a thrilling antidote to trend fatigue. Whether you engaged with it at the time or not, consider this a call to dress creatively and connect with your inner teen. Or... grandma.

There’s a particular genre of cool person who doesn’t make you feel uncool by comparison but makes you feel cooler by association. One is Tavi Gevinson and one is Anna Posner from my sixth form. I just DuckDuckGo’d her and found out she’s a lesbian rabbi now. Amazing
#i feel like it's fine for me to say her full name#like all this reveals that isn't public domain is that she went to sixth form with a random tumblr user and she was the coolest person there

Tavi: At least you're not Cortana? Tavi: Omg yes. Should we say that premium membership allow users to interact with each other in VR? [ reacts with a haha to his voice message ] Tavi: Oh you're probably right. Probably some big pitch he was preparing for his dad [ reacts with a haha to the Amber & Anna message ] [ sends a voicenote back about how he really fell off with Anna but she respects her business acumen being in prison and getting a hit tv show. good for her] Tavi: all that to say, when she gets out, she owes me a Birkin
Felix: I never thought I'd be offended about what AI I am but here we are. Felix: Oh that's perfect. And we're about to launch a premium product where AI can control sex toy settings, so users get a truly unique experience. Felix: Leo probably started this when he was in college. [ voicenote about how it probably took weeks to decide and he does little voice reenactments ] Felix: Yeah, I was sad Amber dated him. Felix: But I guess I was with Anna at the time, I shouldn't have really been sad about that. [ hurried voicenote of eagerness about Anna being released from prison ]

Don Ottavio* Modern Prod Jobs Tierlist
* and Ottavio-like characters in adaptations
As far as I remember (although my memory has heavy biases), Ottavio seems to be the Don G character with the most random jobs assigned to him when in a modern day setting. It makes sense; in the original he’s nobility, and they don’t really work at all, so in a modern prod, they’ll assign him something to give him more character traits than “guy who likes his gf, like, THIS MUCH”.
Some of these are really bad though.
F:
Parking inspector (#UncleJohn, Toronto, 2014) For some reason, this adaptation changed Anna and Ottavio to be significantly poorer than Zerlina and Masetto. Why? I have no idea. Anna and the Commendatore get an okay lot, being Zerlina and Masetto’s wedding planners, but Ottavio is a particularly low-ranking cop. This is pretty irreconcilable with the text and the actual character, although it does make him look extremely pathetic.
D:
Soldier (Don Giovanni, Chicago Lyric Opera, various) I just find it really hard to believe that a soldier is so squeamish about killing.
C:
Unspecified white collar profession (various) Sometimes you just gotta put him in a nonspecific grey suit. Practical, but boring. Words that could describe the man himself?
B:
Architect (Don Giovanni, La Monnaie, 2020) I'm not really sure what them specifying his profession is supposed to do for the production, considering in practice he ends up being just Anna's boytoy and hot tenor eye candy, but this is a solid choice and I could see it happening.
Whatever tf Poodle Ottavio is doing (Don Giovanni, Salzburg Festival, 2021) Is he an arctic explorer with a dog for some reason? Is he a military captain? Is he a guy in a toga with four arms? Romeo Castelluci I demand answers
A:
Artist/poet and professional sillyboy (Shaw’s Man and Superman) Okay, Tavy Robinson is not really Don Ottavio. He’s a lot more naive and adorably stupid, but I put him on the list anyway. Because Tavy is so romantic and idealistic, this works for him pretty well, although I would object if this was used for an actual Ottavio.
Just some rich guy who doesn’t work (various) Probably the most logical updated version of his original character, since noblemen don't work and billionaires don't either. He wears classy grey suits everywhere because he can and so he can look as stylish as possible constantly along with his equally stylish wife.
Undercover cop (Peter Sellars Don Giovanni) Similar to Man and Superman, I consider the Sellars prod to be a completely separate story, but this choice works very well in the story it's trying to tell, and textually, it's not the worst either. Ottavio is trying to catch and kill a criminal, and he also achieves absolutely nothing. Peak American police behavior.
S:
I had a joke here about the La Monnaie 2014 Ottavio but honestly that production portrays this relationship in such a rapey way that I really don't want to mention it as a punchline. So pretend there's something actually cool and insightful here.
#operaposting#don giovanni#ofc the ideal don ottavio job is history teacher I mean look at cluth ottavio#don ottavio

sweet child, made of pure gold, heart rusty from feelings rejected and old, grown-up eyes of steel unbent, a golden child with a shaking hand
what started as travis headcanons turned into the hacketts' boys sticking together headcanons because I personally need this
when Travis is still in only child, people notice his reservedness, a bit unusual for a boy his age, and even praise him for it. in reality, he skips shildhood altogether and grows into a little adult, because the family business is growing and there are always chores to be done, so he helps out. if he knew what loneliness is, he'd probably say he's lonely. in the meantime, sometime he puts in just a bit of extra effort to try and earn a smile, one of those he saw other parents flash at their children like it's nothing. he can't seem to do it. he just figures that's how his family is and doesn't give it a second thought.
when Chris comes along, everything changes. he's just a screaming pile of baby fat, but that pile does the unthinkable. Ma getes softer, happier, and Travis starts to wonder if maybe she could smile all this time, but simply didn't. he likes the baby, though. sometimes he's really fun.
there is a period of time when young Chris idolizes his big brother. Travis can't step anywhere in the house without the chubby toddler keeping in his way. it's a nuisance, almost. still, Travis finds time to build an toy airplane for kid brother. the look in Chris's eyes fills him with pride.
there are other times, too. when Travis is eleven, he scores the top of his class and even receives a letter of recognition, which goes nearly unnoticed. Chris is three and gets all the praise for blabbering his little mouth left and right. that seems unfair. in the heat of the moment, Travis secretly wishes he didn't have a brother. that same year, Bobby comes along.
Travis practically raises Bobby. he grows slowly, hardly speaks, and doesn't shine half as bright as Chris. Ma is constantly railed up about it, so it falls on Travis to patiently teach the little brother some basics, play with him, or read bedtime stories.
teachers always say how charismatic and charming Chris is. for a nine-year-old, he's already not doing too well in school, but can talk his way out of any trouble. he even has his way with Ma. still, more often than not he asks Travis to sign his report cards, which Travis does.
when Bobby accidentally shatters a whole pile of plates, Travis jumps between him and Ma without even thinking. a slap lands on hs shoulder. then another, on his face. they shout at each other for a while, and its pretty bad. Chris is not around to make it better. he's at a sleepover at a friend's house, so there's no one to calm Ma down.
later that night, Bobby is sobbing into Travis's shoulder pleading him not to tell Chris about his sloppy, stupid mistake that got Ma so angry. he adores Chris the same way everybody else does. when he finaly drifts off to sleep, Travis goes to get some ice for the bruises.
when Travis is back home, fresh out of the police acedemy, it seems that his brothers are the only ones proud. Chris is fourteen, and he ditches a date with some girl to spend time with him. Bobby is eleven and paints him a picture of an unproportionally tall figure with a yellow star on his chest. Travis laughs and says it looks more like Superman than a sheriff. Bobby turns to him saying, 'You are Superman, aren't you?'
one Christmas, Chris brings his wife Amelia home to break the news: they are expecting. Chris is around thirty at the time. a golden son brings amazing news, no one expected less. everything he touches turns into a huge success, including the Hackett's Quarry that he is now running. he is the first one to give Ma grandchildren, too. he just... shines, golden all the way through. they all love him. Travis looks at him hugging his wife and their folks, sipping coffee in an armchair. Bobby, who is twice as big as Dad, is overwhelmed and excited like a kid. he even lifts Amelia and gives her a careful swirl before putting her down. they all laugh.
Bobby is a gentle soul but toughens up while working with dad. Chris often visits to spend time with the little brother. whenever he does, Bobby gets to shine a bit more, as if his brother's gold rubs off of him. he's good at making furniture, but he hardly gets around to doing that unless Chris is home.
he does carve a few wooden figurines for Kaylee and Caleb. the kids love Bobby and he loves them back, simple as that. between him and Travis, Bobby is their favorite uncle.
when Amelia dies, Travis is the first person to know. Chris turns up at the station all disheveled and lost. they drink all night, and talk, and Chris is crying, clutching desperately at his brother's hand. at that moment, he seems dark and empty, no magical golden area around him. Travis has to shine a bit more to drag him out of that darkness.
when Caleb, and then Kaylee and Chris fall victims of the werewolf curse, it seems that there's no more light left in the world. it's too scary, too unrealistic to be true. the decision is made among all three brothers. a pact, even. hunt Silas down, save the family. none of them knew what price they'd have to pay for this decision, but they weren't going to back down.
all three of them remember that night of the pact differently, but all three remember the feeling of sharing a bond. something tight, deep, shared by the blood. and shimmering with gold.

Here’s eleven books to have you swooning all month long.
We know that Valentine’s Day has come and gone but there’s no time frame on romance! Whether you’re still recovering from heart-shaped candy comas or you shake your cynical fist at that old corporate holiday, here’s eleven books to make you believe in the power of love again. Read, swoon, and repeat as necessary.
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
If you haven’t read this classic novel that will (repeatedly) break your heart and put it back together again, now is the perfect time to pick it up and believe in love again. And if you have read it, we promise that this one’s worth the re-read.
Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland
First love can be amazing, life-changing, a dream come true—and it can also be an epic disaster. This debut perfectly captures the all-consuming nature of first love—and first heartache.
Perfect Ten by L. Philiips
What’s a boy to do when he breaks it off with the only other gay guy in his high school? Sam Raines knows he’s in for a romantic drought, but when his ex-Catholic Wiccan best friend Meg suggests a love spell, he’s just desperate enough to give it a try.
Alex & Eliza: A Love Story by Melissa de la Cruz
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Witches of East End and the Descendants series comes the love story of young Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler.
Once and for All by Sarah Dessen
Hailed as the queen of Young Adult literature, Sarah Dessen delivers a richly satisfying romance with an ending that is so much more than happily-ever-after in her latest novel.
Rookie on Love by Tavi Gevinson
An anthology about the heart’s most powerful emotion, edited by Rookie creator, Tavi Gevinson. Featuring exclusive essays from John Green, Rainbow Rowell, Alessia Cara, Jenny Zhang, and more, this collection explores all types of love–between lovers, friends, sisters, and more.
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
After a car accident Mia loses her family and maybe even her future. Now she must choose between fighting for her life and letting go in this beautifully written novel about love, family, and the choices we make.
Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh
One girl in disguise plus one very attractive thief lord leads to an action-packed romance set against the backdrop of Feudal Japan. If you love a slow-burn swoon, this is the read for you!
That Inevitable Victorian Thing by E.K. Johnston
Set in a near-future world where the British Empire never fell, That Inevitable Victorian Thing is a surprising, romantic, and thought-provoking story of love, duty, and the small moments that can change people and the world.
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Fair warning: the build-up and tension of the romance between the pages of this book is so adorable and so real, you’ll be a puddle of swoon by the time you’re through with it. The romance sparkles in this one—as does its Paris setting (only the most romantic city on Earth, NBD).
The Boy Most Likely To by Huntley Fitzpatrick
Tim Mason isn’t know for making the best decisions, and Alice knows falling for her little brother’s best friend isn’t a super great idea. But when they collide, sparks fly.
