Bad Day for the Cut (2017)

Donal is a farmer who still lives at home in a little Irish village with his mother Florence. He works the fields during the day and drinks in the local pub at night. He seems content with a simple, quiet life. The only sense we get of his wish for something more is an old camper van, which he has lovingly restored. When Florence is killed in an apparent home invasion Donal sets off for Belfast in the little red van, looking for revenge. What he finds is a world of violence and brutality that he can’t understand and a secret about his mother that will shake him to his core.

1945년 폴란드, 적십자에서 일하는 프랑스 의사 '마틸드'에게 비극적 임신을 한 수녀들이 도움을 요청한다. 비밀리에 수녀원을 오가며 진료하던 '마틸드'는 수녀원이 뭔가를 감추고 있는 것을 알게 되는데...

Pologne, décembre 1945. Mathilde Beaulieu, une jeune interne de la Croix-Rouge chargée de soigner les rescapés français avant leur rapatriement, est appelée au secours par une religieuse polonaise. D’abord réticente, Mathilde accepte de la suivre dans son couvent où trente Bénédictines vivent coupées du monde. Elle découvre que plusieurs d’entre elles, tombées enceintes dans des circonstances dramatiques, sont sur le point d’accoucher. Peu à peu, se nouent entre Mathilde, athée et rationaliste, et les religieuses, attachées aux règles de leur vocation, des relations complexes que le danger va aiguiser… C’est pourtant ensemble qu’elles retrouveront le chemin de la vie.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2018) - #66: The Innocents (2016) - dir. Anne Fontaine (52 Films by Women 2018: #20)

Anne Fontaine’s drama The Innocents might be the best film I’ve seen in 2018 so far, a moving ode to the power of faith in even the most desolate circumstances. Based on actual events, the story centers on Mathilde Beaulieu (Lou de Laâge), a French medical student working alongside doctors at a makeshift Red Cross hospital in postwar Poland circa December 1945. One day, Mathilde is visited by a young nun, Sister Teresa (Eliza Rycembel), who begs her to visit the convent on the far outskirts of town, where another nun, Zofia (Anna Próchniak), is about to give birth to a breech baby. Mathilde delivers the child successfully, but she soon learns that several other sisters are also pregnant. Nine months earlier, these young women had been raped by a group of Soviet soldiers who invaded the priory.

Mathilde risks her life and her career to repeatedly visit the mothers-to-be, finding a friend and a voice of reason in Sister Maria (Agata Buzek), but also an antagonist in the Mother Abbess (Agata Kulesza), who says that she is looking out for her charges’ best interests but in actuality has little compassion for their collective plight. The doctor whom Mathilde assists in her Red Cross day job, Samuel (Vincent Macaigne), is an on again, off again boyfriend and he proves to be a great help to Mathilde when a number of the nuns go into labor at once, but The Innocents is a female-driven narrative through and through. Male characters supply either sexual fulfillment or potentially life-threatening violence, but they never take the main focus away from the women and girls.

All of the aforementioned actors give beautiful performances and the cinematography by Caroline Champetier is nothing short of stunning; you could pause the film at any frame and see from whichever chosen image that Champetier should have won an Oscar for her camerawork. Most impressively, writer-director Anne Fontaine paces her film perfectly, depicting the elegiac drama in such a way that the action never feels slowed-down or stilted. Toward the end of the film, Fontaine also incorporates the saddest song in the world, Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight,” but earns the moment and avoids making the piece’s inclusion a cliché. Ultimately, The Innocents is both heartbreaking and uplifting, telling its tale with a demonstration of grace that only the finest art can achieve.
