Llama Llama Thanks-for-Giving Day

Llama Llama Thanks-for-Giving Day is a great book to teach young readers how to be kind and helpful to others.

Llama Llama and his family go around and thank townspeople who help in the town on a daily basis and deem the day “Thanks For Giving Day.”

The story shows that even though children may be small or young, a kind gesture can make a big impact on others no matter what!

This book will help children with reading, talking, and writing skills as they discuss and brainstorm things or people in their own lives that they are thankful for.

This book can build print awareness as readers begin to recognize letter and words.

Children can use background knowledge and narrativive skills to explore and discuss their own “Thanks for Giving Day.”

Extend the book with a Thankful Turkey craft activity!

You will need:

colored construction paper

scissors

glue

a marker

googly eyes

After the story, children can think about things or people they are thankful for. Children can practice their writing skills by putting those things on the turkey's feathers!

They can also practice their fine motor skills by cutting out their turkey and feathers! Children can even take it step further and write ways they can help the person on the back of the feather with the name!

Totally Youthful Tuesday

Bursting balloons, pretending to be a robot in a rocket ship, that’s fun. And the little girl in this book loves doing those things and more to be loud. But, of course, we can’t always be loud. And, when the little girl goes to the library…. Well, you aren’t supposed to be super loud in a library. Something has to change for the little girl.

I’m wasn’t totally on board with the total shhh of the library part of the book. Inside voices talking excitedly in the childrens or the adult parts of the library make it feel alive. But, this is also the cutest rhyming book with awesome art, and I really really liked the conclusion as well. So, I’ll let the bit of library stereotyping go this time.

Dear Gus,

Mom went to dinner with Yiayia tonight, so you and I had boys night. We ate dinner while watching An American Tale. You’re really into a book by Anna Dewdney called THE LITTLE EXCAVATOR right now, so after our shower, I found you in your rocking chair reading it (upside down). We’re literally reading that book every night for going on like a week. Also, one of your favorite shows is Llama Llama, which was also written by Dewdney. In writing this post, I decided to look up some info about her and discovered that she died of brain cancer at age 50 three years ago.
