A quick review of Shin Mazinger Zero...kinda

So...I finally got to read the last volume of Shin Mazinger Zero vs Ankoku Daishogun and...I am just as frustrated about the ending as I was when I read it in Japanese in 2015 😂. Nontheless, Shin Mazinger Zero remains for me the best version of the Mazinger. Because of its apocalyptic and emotional story/nature, amazing action, BEAUTIFUL ART and mostly well written characters. The problems with this series was the feeling of Tabata trying to write a story too big for him to handle. I mean, a sequel wasn't absolutely necessary, but still a great read. He could have ended it all at the seventh volume of the second series, with Minerva waking up and all. But no, Tabata and Dynamic Pro had to make the story even more confusing and overall hard to get with the eight volume of Ankoku Daishogun, with an ending I'm not too enthusiastic about. And the second problem was, of course, the heavy fanservice of the first series TwT. Man, I couldn't stand it but resisting was worth it because the story otherwise is very good. Luckily, the fanservice gets toned down quite soon so it becomes forgettable as you read. So yeah, what are my last words about Shin Mazinger Zero? It's amazing, despite its flaws. The story may get confusing at times, but I can assure you you will be hooked from the first volume to the last. The Zero-verse is passionate in its characters, intense and dark in its story and violence and just a hell of a ride. If you're searching for a mature, dark and quite well written mecha that can surprise you, this is it. Do yourself a favour and go expirience Shin Mazinger Zero. Hope you'll have a good read, my friend! 😉 Vote: 8/10

I think I like Great Mazinger so much because with Mazinger Z I always have to pick it or Mazinkaiser over the other but Great is always definitively cool. B-but Great Mazinkaiser and Mazin Emperor G! 

Those are cool too but Great Mazinger has this timelessness to it that I can’t really put into words. It just kicks ass. It’s theme song alone is it telling the listener how badass it is. This plays while it tears the Warrior Beasts apart and duels Ankoku Daishogun in the OP and ends with it flying away like Superman.

I imagine it’s got rabots in it, so it seems like my jam, but I haven’t seen it

I genuinely wonder if Morimori getting Fucking Murdered is just a common theme with the VS Ankoku Daishogun entries in the Mazinger series.

Definitely happens in Kaiser and the ZERO manga, at least. Can’t speak for 70s Mazinger tho...
