Helping Children With Hair Loss One Donation at a Time
In the digital age, an effective nonprofit organization cannot exist without an effective social media strategy. This strategy must be one that showcases the work and the positive impact of the organization, drives users to the organization’s website, and encourages users to engage with the nonprofit through donations, volunteering, or showing up to events, all while growing their community and farming engagements such as follows, likes, comments, and shares.
A nonprofit organization that means a lot to me because of my own participation is Children With Hair Loss (CWHL), a nonprofit that “provides human hair replacements at no cost to children and young adults facing medically-related hair loss.” This is so important because other mainstream hair-donation charities such as Locks of Love don’t actually give out their wigs for free, despite the assumption of many donors who give their hair away assuming it will be provided to someone free of cost. Because I have donated my hair to CWHL twice now, and I know that their social media presence is mediocre at best, I’ve chosen them as my organization to explore how their social media strategy could be improved.
CWHL has accounts on Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube. They are largely unactive on X and YouTube (their last video was posted to their channel four years ago), and although I could spend time discussing how using those platforms could benefit their social media strategy, I will focus on the two platforms they actively use: Facebook and Instagram.
I’ll begin with their Facebook, because it is the platform where they have the largest following. They boast a relatively impressive 139k followers on Facebook, considering they are a small nonprofit, but get a relatively low engagement for a following of that size. That being said, their content is subpar. Almost no videos or reels, the quality of photos varies wildly, and many are low quality, and the whole feel of the page is very impersonal. Joseph Letke of Goodsides cited a few interesting statistics on the impact of video-marketing for a nonprofit, such as “nonprofits using video generate 54% more leads than those without (Animoto, 2023)” and “72% of donors say that they’re ‘very likely’ to donate after watching a video about a nonprofit’s work (Blackbaud, 2023),” highlighting the huge missed opportunities CWHL is missing by not including videos that are informative of the organizations mission, how it operates, who works for the organization, and most importantly, who donates their hair and who receives those donations.
My suggestion for their Facebook is to expand their content. It largely consists of before/after pictures of people who have donated their hair, fliers encouraging people to donate hair or money, and pictures from events they’ve hosted. The page does include testimonials from parents of children who have received wigs, but those testimonials would be more effective in the video format, because users are more likely to engage with a video rather than text. They need informative videos on a variety of subjects pertaining to the organization, and they need to expand on the number of advocates and influencers who post about donating and believing in the work of the nonprofit. The metrics they should be tracking are their customer and community retention (advanced) because they largely rely on returning donors of hair and money, advocate impact (behavioral) so they can zero in on which advocates are the most influential and generate the most interactions for them, and most importantly, website visits (channel) because the main goal of their social media sites is to drive users to their website, where they can learn more about the nonprofit and, crucially, how to donate.
Their Instagram is the platform that needs the most work. They have 44.2k followers and get anywhere from 25 to 3000 likes per post. All the shortcomings of their Facebook account are also the shortcomings of their Instagram, except they are even less active on the site. There is clearly no posting schedule, because the frequency in which they post is erratic. According to Shopify, a brand or organization should aim to post three to five times per week to maintain engagement and increase their reach and following, and CWHL is posting far less than that. The quality of their images is also poor, unprofessional, and very repetitive. Obviously, home pictures from parents of children who have received wigs will not be of professional quality, but their fliers are clunky and out of style, and their self-produced content is unrefined and lacks that professional panache that you expect from a business Instagram account. Colleen Gratzer, an accessibility specialist from InDesign, stated correctly that images are far more memorable than words. A good image can leave a lasting positive impression of the organization, whereas images that are unprofessional and of poor-quality leave “a negative impression and results in a disconnect with your audience.” Also like their Facebook, they rarely utilize videos or reels, one of the most effective ways of communicating with your audience.
The metrics CWHL should analyze on their Instagram are their content reaction and response (advanced) so they can zero in on what content is driving the most engagement and focus on creating more of that content. Impact actions should be another focus (behavioral) because they need to grow a larger audience that both follows them and visits their page. And just like their Facebook, they need to track website visits (channel) because the main goal of the social media accounts is to drive traffic to those sites so users can learn how to donate.
