Beneath the Tangles Prayer Group | March 1 - 7 Prayer Requests

Here are our first prayer requests for this week:

1 - Pray that God will provide wisdom, strength, and grace to Twwk, Claire, and Mecahawk as they oversee and lead the various BtT departments.

2 - Our small group meets tonight. Pray that it will be a time of learning, prayer, worship, and accountability for the attendees and leaders.

3 - The first round of our AniMarch Madness tournament begins today. This is our highest engagement project of the year and this year, we’re hoping that the changes we’re instituting will bring people closer into community with us. Please pray for that to happen.

4 - Pray that the Anime Ministry Network—a collaboration of digital missionaries reaching otaku—will find loving, effective, and engaging ways to work with one another to share Christ with anime fans.

5 - Pray that the BtT Twitter (http://twitter.com/AnimeTangles) and Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/beneaththetangles.bsky.social) ministries will engage our community and point them toward content that honors Christ, and for wisdom and righteous words for @KhakiBlueSocks and @thetangles as they lead these platforms.

6 - Pray that as Beneath the Tangles staff members interact with followers, they participate in the work of raising disciples.

The loss of life and impact on the communities in Helene’s path is unfathomable — and both the immediate and long-term needs are vast. 

If you’re reading this, it’s likely because you want to help and care about making a difference for those who’ve been impacted by Hurricane Helene.

You’re in the right place. When we see tragedy like this happen in the news, it’s important to not tune it out. Instead, pay attention and truly feel the heartbreak of it — t​​hen, look for and be inspired by the people stepping in to help, and use that energy to make a difference ourselves.

Looking for the helpers

Instead of turning away from tragic events like the devastation from Hurricane Helene — we look closer for people stepping in using what they have, where they are, to make a difference for others.

Inspired by Mister Rogers’ famous quote, we call them the “helpers,” — and they’re usually found wherever there’s bad news in the world. Hurricane Helene is no different. Here are some people, businesses, and organizations helping right now:

Chef José Andrés and ​World Central Kitchen teams are serving thousands of meals to communities in need — from Mexico, and the Big Bend of Florida, and into Appalachia.

Volunteer pilots with the Port City Aviators Flying Club are flying supplies to storm victims in western North Carolina.

The national Disaster Distress Helpline is providing free multilingual crisis counseling to those in need.

Southern Smoke Foundation, an organization that supports food & beverage workers in crisis, is providing financial support for groceries, medical bills, lost wages, and more.

Volunteers with veteran-led disaster response organization Team Rubicon are on the ground in Greenwood, South Carolina clearing roads of trees and debris.

A local library branch in Asheville, North Carolina served as a hub for community members in need of internet service.

Workers at Waffle House were “unlikely heroes” providing food to people in need.

A local Fox News correspondent stopped his live broadcast to help rescue a woman trapped in her car in rising floodwaters.

Emergency response teams rescued more than 50 staff, patients, and caregivers from the roof of a hospital in Erwin, Tennessee.

The SPCA of Brevard rescued 20 animals from Hurricane Helene’s path — and it’s now helping them get adopted.

After we’ve allowed ourselves to feel the weight of the pain and heartbreak associated with bad news, and look for hope and helpers in the midst of it — we always have the opportunity to join in and make a difference, too.

Climate scientists agree, the intensity and extent of the devastation brought by Hurricane Helene was made worse by climate change. 

While we can’t go back in time and burn less fossil fuels — we can make a difference now to secure a safer future and prevent future climate disasters. 

In addition to talking about how this disaster is connected to climate change in our own conversations and holding media outlets accountable for how they talk about climate change — this is a great time to tell your elected officials that you want them to take meaningful climate action.

We’re making incredible progress in the U.S. and globally in reducing emissions, but we need to work even faster — and incorporate climate mitigation efforts into our plans — to limit the most severe impacts of global warming.

Greek Archaeologists Discover Mysterious 4,000-Year-Old Building on Hill Earmarked for New Airport

Archaeologists on the Greek island of Crete have uncovered a monumental ancient structure that threatens to halt progress on the construction of a new airport.

The structure belonged to the Minoan civilization and was mainly used between 2000 and 1700 B.C.E., around the same time that Crete’s monumental palaces at Knossos and Phaistos were built, per the Greek City Times.

But unlike these palaces and other feats of Minoan architecture, the purpose of the building remains unknown, and it’s now the subject of much archaeological attention and speculation.

The structure resembles “a huge car wheel from above,” writes Nicholas Paphitis for the Associated Press, with a diameter of 157 feet and a total area of 19,000 square feet.

According to a statement from the Greek Ministry of Culture, some of the structure’s features are comparable to Minoan tombs, including its circular arrangement of stone rings and its intricate layout. But a large quantity of ancient animal bones found nearby is complicating researchers’ understanding of the site.

“It may have been periodically used for possibly ritual ceremonies involving consumption of food, wine and perhaps offerings,” says the statement, per a translation by the AP.

While archaeologists further excavate and study the building, which sits on top of Papoura Hill, near the town of Kastelli, they must contend with the hilltop’s future function: a planned radar station for Crete’s new international airport.

Beginning in 2027, the airport will serve Heraklion, Crete’s capital and largest city, as well as a wealth of cultural and archaeological sites across the island.

Eighteen million passengers are projected to use the airport annually once construction is complete, the AP reports. Tourists want to visit Crete’s well-preserved historical sites, but they need convenient, modern infrastructure to take them there.

At times, rampant tourism threatens the integrity of ancient sites in Greece, prompting the government to take protective measures, like limiting the number of visitors to the Acropolis in Athens.

Per the statement, excavations in the area uncovered at least 35 other archaeological sites. As Greek authorities build Crete’s new airport and the network of roads needed to connect it with the rest of the island, they must continually strike a balance between innovation and maintaining cultural heritage.

In the statement, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni describes the structure as a unique find of great interest. She says the Greek government and airport officials will explore alternative locations for the radar station to ensure the preservation of this historically significant archaeological site.

“It’s possible to go ahead with the airport while granting the antiquities the protection they merit,” Mendoni adds, per the AP. Her comments offer hope that Crete’s past, present and future will once again be reconciled.

Another big stop in Tokyo for me was Jimbocho Book Town! It is a neighborhood of, depending on who you ask, up to 400 generally-secondhand bookstores flanked by some of the major universities in Tokyo. The local government even prints out maps of the stores to help people find them all:

Which, you will note, is not 400 stores, because the process of becoming an "official" Jimbocho Town Bookstore is an intensely political operation run by local stakeholders with tons of fights over what should qualify and what rights that entails - never change humanity!

"Book Towns" used to actually be quite a common thing, and they peaked during the literary boom of the late 19th century. Figuring out "what books existed" was a hard task, and to do serious research you needed to own the books (you weren't making photocopies), so concentrating specialty bookstores in one area made sense to allow someone to go to one place and ask around to find what they need and discover what exists. It was academia's version of Comiket! Modern digital information & distribution networks slowly killed or at least reduced these districts in places like Paris or London, but Jimbocho is one of the few that still survives.

Why it has is multi-causal for sure - half of this story is that Tokyo is YIMBY paradise and has constantly built new buildings to meet demand so rents have been kept down, allowing low-margin, individually-owned operations to continue where they have struggled in places like the US. These stores don't make much money but they don't have to. But as important is that Japan has a very strong 'book collector' culture, it's the original baseball cards for a lot of people. The "organic" demand for a 1960's shoujo magazine or porcelainware picture book is low, but hobbyists building collections is a whole new source of interest. Book-as-art-collection powered Jimbocho through until the 21st century, where - again like Comiket - the 'spectacle' could give it a lift and allow the area to become a tourist attraction and a mecca for the ~cozy book hoarder aesthetic~ to take over. Now it can exist on its vibes, which go so far as to be government-recognized: In 2001 the "scent wafting from the pages of the secondhand bookstore" was added to Japan's Ministry of Environment's List of 100 Fragrance Landscapes.

Of course this transition has changed what it sells; when it first began in the Meiji area, Jimbocho served the growing universities flanking it, and was a hotpot of academic (and political-polemic) texts. Those stores still exist, but as universities built libraries and then digital collections, the hobby world has taken over. Which comes back to me, baby! If you want Old Anime Books Jimbocho is one of the best places to go - the list of "subculture" stores is expansive.

I'll highlight two here: the first store I went to was Kudan Shobo, a 3rd floor walk-up specializing in shoujo manga. And my guys, the ~vibes~ of this store. It has this little sign outside pointing you up the stairs with the cutest book angel logo:

Real flex of Japan's low crime status btw. Inside is jam-packed shelves and the owner just sitting there eating dinner, so I didn't take any photos inside, but not only did it have a great collection of fully-complete shoujo magazines going back to the 1970's, it had a ton of "meta" books on shoujo & anime, even a doujinshi collection focusing on 'commentary on the otaku scene' style publications. Every Jimbocho store just has their own unique collection, and you can only discover it by visiting. I picked up two books here (will showcase some of the buys in another post).

The other great ~subculture~ store I went to was Yumeno Shoten - and this is the store I would recommend to any otaku visiting, it was a much broader collection while still having a ton of niche stuff. The vibes continued to be immaculate of course:

And they covered every category you could imagine - Newtype-style news magazine, anime cels, artbooks, off-beat serial manga magazines, 1st edition prints, just everything. They had promotional posters from Mushi Pro-era productions like Cleopatra, nothing was out of reach. I got a ton of books here - it was one of the first stores I visited on my second day in Jimobocho, which made me *heavily* weighed down for the subsequent explorations, a rookie mistake for sure. There are adorable book-themed hotels and hostels in Jimbocho, and I absolutely could see a trip where you just shop here for a week and stay nearby so you can drop off your haul as you go.

We went to other great stores - I was on the lookout for some 90's era photography stuff, particularly by youth punk photographer Hiromix (#FLCL database), and I got very close at fashion/photography store Komiyama Shoten but never quite got what I was looking for. Shinsendo Shoten is a bookstore devoted entirely to the "railway and industrial history of Japan" and an extensive map collection, it was my kind of fetish art. My partner @darktypedreams found two old copies of the fashion magazine Gothic & Lolita Bible, uh, somewhere, we checked like five places and I don't remember which finally had it! And we also visited Aratama Shoten, a store collecting vintage pornography with a gigantic section on old BDSM works that was very much up her alley. It had the porn price premium so we didn't buy anything, but it was delightful to look through works on bondage and non-con from as far back as the 1960's, where honestly the line between "this is just for the fetish" and "this is authentic gender politics" was...sometimes very blurry. No photos of this one for very obvious reasons.

Jimbocho absolutely earned its rep, its an extremely stellar example of how history, culture, and uh land use policy can build something in one place that seems impossible in another operating under a different set of those forces. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

A/N: This is my first ever Ghost fic to see the light of day, and the first fic I've published in over a year. I'm scared, but I figured I'd unleash it into the wilderness! Some Italian terms of endearment are in the feminine, but the actual reader description is gender-neutral. Yes, bad Italian translations are featured - my ancestors are cursing me as I type. Enjoy!

It had been a long day. Sister Imperator had run you ragged preparing for Terzo’s next assignment, though he would no longer perform the duties bestowed upon him as the anti-pope, being retired meant having other expectations placed upon him instead. You were to accompany him as an international dignitary of sorts, meeting with other congregations within the Ministry’s broader network, building an empire required going beyond Italy, Sweden or Los Angeles… And, after all, Terzo was a popular Papa, no matter how the dismissal from the higher clergy may have looked. Just as Secondo was out there performing ambassadorial duties when he wasn’t in his vineyards, so too would Terzo begin a new chapter. 

But that was later. Now? Now you just needed to lie down.

Terzo was already on the bed when you entered your shared living quarters, and he was reading the latest instalment of Secondo’s monthly newsletter - an unusually personal and rather entertaining mailer only the Emeritus brothers were privy to.

To Terzo's great joy, it included a gossip column, specifically for his benefit he was sure, as well as an arts and culture spot. For Primo, there was a horticultural section full of plants and landscapes from wherever Secondo had been, and for Copia, there was a section on animals and literature.

The sound of your arrival has Terzo looking up with a pleased smile, his eyes are bright as he pats the space beside him, his raven hair falling loosely around his forehead. He puts Secondo’s digitally crafted newsletter down, letting the tablet rest on his thighs for a moment.

You waste no time taking him up on the offer, he looked utterly dashing in his glasses, his shirt unbuttoned enough to enjoy a peek of his chest. You loved Terzo in many ways, but seeing him relaxed and enjoying something away from clergy matters was high on your list.

Scooting next to him, you’re mindful of the device. Positioning your head on his torso, your arms locked around his midsection, the instant sensation of his warmth and the weight of his hand on your back has you exhaling with relief.

“Ciao, piccola ucella.” He greets softly, fingers grazing the back of your neck, slowly caressing as he begins to thread his fingers in your hair.

“Ciao, amore.” You hum, eyes closing for a moment, your muscles relaxing with each passing moment. 

“Busy day, hm?” He asks with a smile, knowing full well that you would have been giving Imperator a run for her money.

“Si, very busy.” You answer half-heartedly, already well on your way to dozing on him.

You feel the soft rumble of his laughter against your ear, “It seems you’ve already decided on how to remedy this exhaustion, no?” Giving you a gentle squeeze. “Oh absolutely, you’re my favourite cuscino.” You purr, grip tightening as you shiver, trying to draw extra warmth from his body.

He wordlessly puts the tablet on the bedside table and tugs at the blanket draped over the headboard, bringing it down over both of you, making sure you are suitably covered.

“You know, I find it very sweet when you use some of your Italian, tesoro.” He praises, his thumb brushing over the shell of your ear. 

His gaze never leaves you, concern and adoration blending into one, though the conversation had been playful, he could see that you were not only physically fried but mentally too.

“Sorry, honey, I’ve interrupted your Secondo monthly.” You mumble, sighing, you wanted to talk to Terzo and enjoy doing something with him, but now your work mode had been switched off everything else was catching up to you.

“Bah, if I cannot cuddle with mia amata, and make sure they are well, then what good is this love we share, hm? It is okay to not always be, switched on, alright? You tell me this quite often, do you not?”

You really cannot argue with him, especially when he speaks to you in that hushed way that few people, if any, ever get to experience.

“I do.” You concede, lifting your head to look at him, your face full of gratitude, your hand cups his cheek, fingertips tracing those lines that make him so handsome to you, watching with a sweet ache in your chest as he closes his eyes and enjoys the sensation.

When he meets your gaze again his lips upturn into a mischievous smile, “Shall I read to you this last section that mio fratello wrote?”

Your expression matches his in excitement, nodding as you immediately plant your head back on his chest, ready to listen to every word.

“Molto bene, prezioso.” He hums, keeping one arm wrapped around you, the other scooping up the tablet and flicking back to the page he had been reading. He clears his throat for dramatic effect, adjusting the glasses on his nose.

Terzo begins, “The weather in Amsterdam was a drizzle, overcast, not too terrible by any means, if a bit glum for such an intriguing visit. Naturalmente, I was invited to il museo del sesso…”

“The sex museum?” You snort, laughter shaking softly through you, positive you understood him correctly.

“Si, si…” Terzo says with a wry smile, continuing. “I was invited to il museo del sesso, and wouldn’t you know it? In the modern and contemporary gallery, they had painted the most squisito portrait of me. Specifically, my “Anno Zero” momento, quite the homage to the Emeritus physique…certainly, they picked the right brother to fully display our prowess, eh, cari fratelli? Needless to say, it was an enjoyable visit.”

Now you’re giggling uncontrollably, whether it was because there was a naked painting of Secondo in Amsterdam’s sex museum, or whether it was because Secondo seemed exceptionally pleased with this fact, you weren’t sure.

“That has to be one of the best instalments yet.” You muse, giggles still bubbling in your tummy.

Terzo relishes the laughter he pulls from you, thankful for his brother’s colourful display of vanity for helping you get rid of some of the day's tension. He laughs too, leaning down to kiss the top of your head, squeezing you gently. 

“Yes, my love, I’d say it was too.”

i was thinking about the clergy, and since it's the only semi-coherent thought i've thought these last few days, so i'm sharing

we know the ministry bulding is this cemetery thing where productions film at, but in-lore, where could it be?

rambling under the cut, there's much talk about christianity/religions

these are just my thoughts btw, so don't take me too seriously, also i have more thoughts about this so maybe in a few days i'll post them

not all of the locations have ghouls, they are exclusive for the biggest congregations

the clergy has a network of churches/abbeys/monasteries/etc spreading through (at least) countries where the religious majority are christianity and its derivatives, and mostly they do what other satanic churches do, fight the bigotry, piss off the extremists, counteract religion-based actions that don't really represent the everyday people and all that

they serve as a refuge for people that have nowhere to go, specially those affected by religion and religious environments 

the clergy and the ministry are technically different things, the clergy is the group of churches, abbeys, the ministry and other different locations. the ministry is the "main" building, where the papa lives, from where the bureaucracy is done, where the ghouls are summoned and where most of them are

even though i love to imagine the buildings glamoured away and being under spells that make them invisible to outsiders, i don’t think they would do it, mostly because they want people to know about them, that’s why they created ghost 

about the band, they are a project inside the anti-church, they have many more projects and programs, mostly social projects, like having siblings of sin feed the homeless and volunteer at animal shelters and stuff like that

jumping back at the ghouls, they have their own, separate and exclusive wing at the ministry where they can just exist without the need to glamor and pretend to be humans, most siblings of sin don’t even know they are demons and think those are just rumors

Drabble: Epilogue I.5 - The Whole Story

I asked my friends for a writing prompt of location/object/line of dialogue, and this is what I got:

airport security cremation urn “Sorry for your loss. I do have to ask you some questions.” The following is in The Whole Story universe, and takes place between Epilogue I and II.

“Potter, this was beyond a stupid idea, I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” said Draco, as they waited in the windowless room they’d been ushered to upon landing in Edinburgh.

“It wasn’t! By the time they sorted out the floo at Castle Bran, the ministry in Bucharest would’ve been closed for the holiday. There was no way we were making it to our Portkey in time!”

Harry then shut his trap as a woman entered. She wore a ruffled gray suit and looked like she’d been having as difficult a day as they had. In her hands, she held the overly large green urn.

“Sorry for your loss,” she began, as if checking off a box labeled sympathy. “I do have to ask you some questions.”

Draco heard Harry swallow with some difficulty and had to withhold his eye roll. He’d defeated the darkest wizard ever known, and yet was sweating at the temple when faced with a Muggle security officer.

They had checked the urn in a box, surrounded by copious amounts of Romanian newsprint, hoping against hope that it would be handled with care. They couldn’t very well carry something like that onto the plane itself.

“Fire away,” Potter finally said, and Draco then withheld a grin at the unintentional pun.

She placed the urn on the table and sat, laying clasped hands down in front of her and taking a deep breath. “Precisely what kind of animal remains are in here?”

“An African bush elephant,” they said in unison, and Draco winced upon seeing the woman’s raised brow at the way they had chorused this response.

“Potter, why don’t you let me do the talking?” Draco said quietly, and Harry nodded once.

The woman narrowed her eyes. “Funny, I didn’t know African bush elephants were native to the Carpathian mountains,” she said, folding her arms across her chest.

“They’re not, obviously. We’ve been traveling for some weeks now and this is the last leg of our journey.”

“Oh?” she said, and Draco felt his stomach churn slightly at the subtle excitement in her tone, as if she was hoping for that response. “Because based solely on your passports, you haven’t traveled to Africa before. Nor do your travel histories,” she said, motioning between the two of them, “line up beyond this last journey from Romania. In fact… I don’t even see evidence of a flight to get there. How do you explain that?”

Fuck. Why hadn’t they thought to doctor the passports in case something like this happened? It would have been easily achieved with a few spells.

Draco mentally kicked himself for being so stupid.

“Look,” the woman then said suddenly, “I’ve had a long day, and I would like you two to level with me. Do you think you could do that?”

“Possibly,” Draco muttered, but she wasn’t waiting for a response.

“Are you, or are you not, part of the Ash Trade Network?”

“The wha—” Draco started to say, but she cut him off as she went on.

“Because if you are, I have to say, you must be the b-squad, if not something further along in the alphabet. None of your fellow members would be foolish enough to use such a vastly oversized urn. I mean, where did you even get such a thing?” she said, motioning to the vessel on the table between them. Again, she went on without waiting for an answer. “And if you aren’t, well then I have to wonder if these are truly animal remains. I don’t think that even an African bush elephant’s ashes would necessitate such a receptacle.”

Draco opened his mouth to speak, but was at a loss for words.

Just then, the door to the room burst open and in walked one of the last people Draco expected to see. Particularly, in professional Muggle attire.

At once, the interrogator stood from her chair and regarded the woman with her fullest attention.

“Officer McGonagall,” she said with a small salute, “I was just getting to the bottom of—”

“I will take it from here, thank you. You are dismissed.”

The woman made an awkward little bow before turning and hurrying out of the room.

Once the door was closed, both Draco and Harry began to speak, but were quickly cut off by the holding up of an imperious hand.

“Not here. Not now,” she said. “We have a memorial to get to, and I am afraid that the guest of honor is running late.”

The portkey she’d procured brought them directly to the front gates of Hogwarts, and it was therefore only a brief walk to Hagrid’s hut where he’d set up copious white chairs, and a small pedestal on which the urn would lie.

The half-giant looked as though he'd been crying, but tears began to flow anew when he caught sight of them walking his way carrying the huge urn.

“Norberta!” he cried, accepting the vessel and hugging it tightly to himself. “Yeh were too young, yeh were!”

As he walked off, still blubbering and muttering to himself, Draco caught sight of Hermione exiting the hut and walking towards them.

Action is needed to save people, animals and the planet

Countless animals in Ukraine are still left stranded and in desperate need of aid due to the severe flooding disaster ensuing from the Kakhovka dam being blown up.

In the grips of this disaster zone, thousands of homes remain underwater, and there are fears of infectious, water-borne diseases spreading. As Network for Animals have stated; “We must continue our rescue efforts!”

The collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine is one of the biggest industrial and ecological disasters in Europe for decades. As CNN reported:

The catastrophe has destroyed entire villages, flooded farmland, deprived tens of thousands of people of power and clean water, and caused massive environmental damage.

The damage is also affecting the area north of the reservoir, where water levels are falling. 

The collapse has left 94% of irrigation systems in Kherson, 74% in Zaporizhzhia and 30% in Dnipro regions “without a source of water,” according to the Ukrainian Agricultural Ministry.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant also lies upstream from the destroyed dam. The reservoir supplies cooling water to the plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power station, and is crucial for its safety. 

The plant is under Russian control, which has been a major source of anxiety for the Ukrainians, still scared by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which still casts its long shadow across Eastern Europe and the rest of the world.

As the BBC reported in 2019, the events at Chernobyl were covered up by the secretive Soviet authorities at the time but the true number of deaths and illnesses caused by the nuclear accident are only now becoming clear.

The BBC also reported back in February 2023, how in June 2022, satellite images captured hundreds of craters made by artillery shells and a 40m-wide (131 ft) hole left by a bomb in fields around the village of Dovhenke, in eastern Ukraine. 

It is just one site left scarred by Russia's invasion of its neighbour. And as the war continues to wreak a devastating humanitarian toll on the people caught up in the fighting, the conflict is leaving a far less obvious, toxic legacy on the land itself.

Amongst the pockmarked landscape and burned-out buildings of Dovhenke, heavy metals, fuel and chemical residues from ammunition and missiles have seeped into the soil.

The Ukrainian government has asked the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to help it assess the environmental damage being done by the conflict. 

Preliminary monitoring by the agency and its partners suggest that urban and rural landscapes could be left with a "toxic legacy for generations to come".

For instance, in May 2022, Biogenesis Bago & Saudi Partners formed to open the Middle East & North Africa's first animal vaccine facility in Saudi Arabia. This facility will ensure that the required supply of veterinary vaccines is available to the countries in the region.
