Mulholland Dr. defies exegesis like no other film I know. Sure, you can trace its origins: Car-crash amnesia is a soap-opera trope; the mysterious mobsters and other manipulators are film noir staples; the portrayal of Hollywood as a nightmare dreamland is straight from Sunset Blvd. (Billy Wilder, 1950), which the film even imitates by having its before-the-credits title appear on a street sign. But writer-director David Lynch isn't out to parody the sources -- not entirely, anyway. What he is up to is harder to pinpoint. There's a part of me that thinks Lynch just wants to have fun -- a nasty kind of fun -- manipulating our responses. At the beginning, we're on to him in that regard: We laugh at the minimal conversation between the two detectives (Robert Forster and Brent Briscoe) at the crash site. We recognize the naive awe on the face of Betty Elms (Naomi Watts), as she arrives in Los Angeles, as a throwback to the old Hollywood musicals in which choruses of hopefuls arrive at the L.A. train station singing "Hooray for Hollywood!" (Has anyone ever been inspired to sing and dance when arriving at LAX?) We're delighted by the appearance of Ann Miller as the landlady, just as later we identify Lee Grant, Chad Everett, and even Billy Ray Cyrus in their cameos. Even the seemingly disjointed scenes -- the director, Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux), is bullied by the Castiglianes (Dan Hedaya and the film's composer, Angelo Badalamenti), or a man (Patrick Fischler) recounts his nightmare at a restaurant called Winkie's, or a hit man (Mark Pellegrino) murders three people -- are standard thriller stuff, designed to keep us guessing -- though at that point, having seen this sort of thing in films by Quentin Tarantino and others, we feel confident that everything will fit together. And then, suddenly, it doesn't. Betty vanishes and Diane Selwyn (Watts), whom we have thought dead, is alive. The amnesia victim known as Rita (Laura Harring) is now Camilla Rhodes, the movie star that Betty wanted to be, and Diane, Camilla's former lover, wants to kill her. It's such a complete overthrow of conventional narrative that there are really only two basic responses, neither of them quite sufficient: One is to dismiss the film as a wacked-out experiment in playing with the audience -- "a load of moronic and incoherent garbage," in the words of Rex Reed -- or to try to assimilate it into some coherent and consistent scheme, like the theory that the first two-thirds of the film are the disillusioned Diane Selwyn's dream-fantasy of what her life might have been as the fresh and talented Betty. There is truth in both extremes: Lynch is playing with the audience, and he is portraying Los Angeles as a land of dreamers. But his film will never be forced into coherence, and it can't be entirely dismissed. I think it is some kind of great film -- the Sight & Sound critics poll in 2022 ranked it at No. 8  in the list of the greatest films of all time, up from No. 28  in 2012 -- but I also think it's self-indulgent and something of a dead end when it comes to narrative filmmaking. It has moments of sheer brilliance, including a performance by Watts that is superb, but they are moments in a somewhat annoying whole.

Il taglio del nastro è avvenuto alla presenza del Presidente di Sport e Salute, Marco Mezzaroma, dell'Amministratore delegato di Sport e Salute, Diego Nepi Molineris e del Presidente della Federazione Italiana Tennis, Angelo Binaghi. «Quest’anno abbiamo fatto diverse campagne legate al mondo dello sport. E oggi siamo voluti venire qui per rappresentare un modello di alimentazione legata alla provenienza, da alcuni territori specifici, delle nostre denominazioni e indicazioni geografiche. Quello che racconta il nostro cibo è anche il territorio, la capacità di produzione legata intimamente alla nostra storia. Mulholland Dr. will be released on 4K Ultra HD on November 16 via The Criterion Collection. It’s part of Criterion's first batch of 4K titles, alongside Citizen Kane and Menace II Society.

David Lynch (Twin Peaks, Eraserhead) writes and directs the 2001 neon-noir mystery. Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, Justin Theroux, Ann Miller, Mark Pellegrino, and Robert Forster star.

Mulholland Dr. has been newly restored in 4K, supervised by Lynch and cinematographer Peter Deming. It features Dolby Vision HDR and 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio.

It includes the film on 4K UHD and Blu-ray plus a booklet. The Blu-ray disc also contains the special features, listed below. Fred Davis designed the cover art.

È un'inedita piazza Duomo "vestita" di Novecento a fare da cornice al saluto che la città di Catania, con il commissario straordinario Federico Portoghese, ha rivolto alla regista Valeria Golino sul set della serie televisiva "L'arte della gioia", allestito di fronte al Palazzo di Città, tra la Cattedrale e porta Uzeda. Con oltre 100 figurazioni, donne e uomini in abiti d'epoca, automobili antiche, carrozze e cavalli. L'opera audiovisiva, tratta dal romanzo postumo della scrittrice catanese Goliarda Sapienza, è una produzione Ht Film per Sky, con riprese realizzate anche nel capoluogo etneo e in diversi siti del centro storico, con la collaborazione della Catania Film Commission. «Siamo particolarmente lieti – ha detto il commissario Portoghese, affiancato dal capo di Gabinetto Giuseppe Ferraro – di ospitare un’importante produzione che, grazie alla regia di un'artista di grande talento come Valeria Golino, non solo valorizzerà l'opera di una scrittrice catanese, facendola conoscere a un pubblico ancora più vasto, ma offrirà anche un’eccezionale vetrina al barocco e a luoghi rappresentativi del nostro patrimonio storico-artistico e architettonico». Si è quindi soffermata sul racconto di alcune fasi della preparazione di quest'ultimo lavoro e soprattutto su come l'idea di ispirarsi all'arte della gioia sia nata dall'incontro e la frequentazione che l'attrice, giovanissima, ebbe con Goliarda Sapienza sul set di un film di Citto Maselli, allora compagno della scrittrice.  Riguardo ai diritti del romanzo, si è mostrata lusingata della piena fiducia riposta in lei da Angelo Pellegrino, marito di Goliarda e depositario della sua eredità letteraria. Il racconto della serie tv, così come il romanzo, è incentrato sulla figura di Modesta, donna ingegnosa e vitale, che sfida pregiudizi, regole e convenzioni in una continua lotta per l'affermazione della  libertà e dell’autodeterminazione. Le riprese hanno toccato, oltre a piazza Duomo, siti di grande impatto evocativo quali piazza Asmundo, via San Benedetto, via Crociferi - dove è stato approntato un grande mercato all’aperto -,  la scalinata Alessi, piazza Dante, palazzo San Giuliano di piazza Università. Madonna col Bambino tra i santi Caterina d'Alessandria e Giacomo, Lorenzo lotto, 1527 ca,, olio su tela. In un paesaggio campestre, all'ombra di un albero, la Vergine col Bambino sta seduta informalmente, vicino a santa Caterina d'Alessandria, con un libro in mano (si riconosce per le vesti principesche e la ruota dentata spezzata appena visibili tra lei e Maria), e san Giacomo maggiore, con il bastone da pellegrino e in posizione orante, mentre dietro di lei un giovane e sensuale angelo la incorona con una ghirlanda di foglie e fiori. La cromia ridotta, gli ampi panneggi, la vivacità di movimenti e gesti mostrano il ritorno di Lotto negli alvei della pittura veneziana, dopo il lungo soggiorno lombardo, mantenendo comunque il dinamismo delle luci e il libero accostamento dei toni, senza allinearsi troppo al placido sentimento elegiaco dei seguaci di Giorgione e Tiziano, ma cercando comunque un colore sontuoso e un tono aulico, in grado di soddisfare i committenti. L'opera, che mostra una qualità pittorica straordinaria, si distacca però dalle composizioni piramidali alla Palma, con figure più dinamiche e inquiete, traccianti una fitta rete di linee diagonali immaginarie, con guizzi luminosi improvvisi e panneggi dalle linee inquiete (come nella setosa veste dell'angelo). Si può ammirare l'opera al Kunsthistorisches Museum (Vienna).
