#PBSwednesday Almost forgotten today is "Assignment America," a 26-episode series from 1974-75 focusing on American issues. Rotating hosts Doris Kearns, Maya Angelou, Studs Terkel, and George F. Will offered half-hour profiles and video essays.
Kearns profiled advertising executive Gerry Della Femina, and protestant theologian Dr. Harvey Cox, for example. Angelou interviewed Ray Bradbury, Angela Davis, and James Baldwin, among others. Terkel's profiles included steelworker Ed Sadlowski, and Maggie Kuhn, head of the Gray Panthers. Will's interview subjects included liberal commentator Murray Kempton, and Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner.
Video essays included “Where Have All the Rebels Gone?” (Angelou) and "A Brooklyn All Their Own" (Kearns).
"The series generally featured little more than low‐budget variations on the 'talking heads' format," The New York Times commented (6/24/1975). "But the heads were frequently interesting, and occasionally, particularly in recent weeks, the format was expanded in unusual directions."

Republican Party
** Initially united in 1854 by the promise to abolish slavery, the Republican Party has always stood for freedom, prosperity, and opportunity. Today, as those principles come under attack from the far-left, we are engaged in a national effort to fight for our proven agenda, take our message to every American, grow the party, promote election integrity, and elect Republicans up and down the ballot. The principles of the Republican Party recognize the God-given liberties while promoting opportunity for every American.

Rat Queens, vol. 1-4 (Kurtis J. Wiebe)
The Deep (Rivers Solomon)
The Song of Achilles (Madeline Miller)
Gods of Jade and Shadow (Silvia Moreno-Garcia)
Books that left me furious at death for taking Octavia Butler before she could write another sequel and tell us just what the hell Earthseed was getting up to out there in space:
Parable of the Talents (Octavia E. Butler)
Books that gave me a new appreciation for the short story as an art form:
Falling In Love with Hominids (Nalo Hopkinson)
Books that I didn’t get into right away but then they REALLY picked up and by the time the Big Reveal happened I was screaming like a howler monkey and feeling like a fool for not catching on sooner:
The City We Became (N.K. Jemisin)
Novellas that made me cry in record time, which is entirely unsurprising given the author:
To Be Taught, If Fortune (Becky Chambers)
Books that frankly took me by surprise and made me think I should be reading more horror, or at least more Stephen Graham Jones:
The Only Good Indians (Stephen Graham Jones)
Sequels that were good but also made my head hurt because Jesus Christ, oh my god, WHAT is going on:
Harrow the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir)
Books that I LIKED but wanted to like more than I actually did:
The Taste of Marrow (Sarah Gailey)
The Ballad of Black Tom (Victor LaValle)
In the Vanishers’ Palace (Aliette de Bodard)
Upright Women Wanted (Sarah Gailey)
The Devourers (Indra Das)
Sister Mine (Nalo Hopkinson)
Mexican Gothic (Silvia Moreno-Garcia)
Axiom’s End (Lindsay Ellis)
Totally respectable literary fiction that I cannot in good conscience lump into literally any other category:
Real Life (Brandon Taylor)
It was fine and I feel bad for not having anything particularly positive or negative or interesting at all to say about it, but it really and truly was just kind of alright:
My Lady’s Choosing: An Interactive Romance Novel (Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris)
Favorite nonfiction:
In the Dream House (Carmen Maria Machado)
How We Fight for Our Lives (Saeed Jones)
An Autobiography (Angela Y. Davis)
Feed (Tommy Pico)

Uncomfortable Labels: My Life as a Gay Autistic Trans Woman (Laura Kate Dale)

Poetry & personal essays that I wanted to Get but didn’t quite:
Homie (Danez Smith)
Something That May Shock and Discredit You (Daniel M. Lavery)
More Than Organs (Kay Ulanday Barrett)
Junk (Tommy Pico)
Nonfiction that was interesting but also incomprehensible in many places because I don’t have a degree in biology, which I guess is my bad:
Dr. Tatiana’s Sex Advice to All Creation (Olivia Judson)
Nonfiction that was interesting but also felt lacking in its analysis, perhaps as an inevitable side effect of trying to publish it quickly enough to stay topical:
Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women’s Anger (Soraya Chemaly)
Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women’s Anger (Rebecca Traister)
Sweet graphic novels:
The Prince and the Dressmaker (Jen Wang)
Shadow of the Batgirl (Sarah Kuhn)
Books that are significant for various reasons and good to read but sort of felt like homework:
Stone Butch Blues (Leslie Feinberg)
Are Prisons Obsolete? (Angela Y. Davis)
Books I reread during quarantine even though I am not generally much of a rereader:
Her Body and Other Parties (Carmen Maria Machado)

They're Trying To Kill Us premieres today, Juneteenth, as part of the Tribeca Film Festival's Online Premiere series. Writer-director team and avid health advocates Keegan Kuhn (co-director Cowspiracy + What the Health) and John Lewis (Badass Vegan) make their Tribeca debut with their incisive exploration into the insidious relationship between structural racism and chronic disease.
Audiences journey with co-director John Lewis as he crosses the country seeking answers to why Americans of Color suffer from disproportionately higher rates of chronic disease than their European American counterparts, while examining the intersections of food, disease, race, poverty, institutional racism and government corruption. Executive produced by Billie Eilish and Chris Paul and featuring interviews with cultural influencers such as Dame Dash, Angela Yee, Mya, Styles P, and Ne-yo, as well as doctors, researchers, politicians, attorneys, activists and experts in the field of food justice, They're Trying To Kill Us unravels a story of collusion that has kept millions of Americans sick, while the industries responsible make billions of dollars.
The film follows John as the protagonist and narrator in the documentary due to his unique experience being adopted at birth from his drug addicted birth mother, growing up as an overweight kid in the violence of Ferguson, to becoming a prominent health and wellness advocate promoting compassion.
Eschewing the glaringly color-blind format of many other documentaries interested in advocating for plant-based living, They’re Trying to Kill Us utilizes its specificity as an act of community care and offers up a new vision of what veganism might look like for communities of color who have been systematically targeted by nutritional and environmental racism.

BLOG POST #4: ELECTION 2020 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES ASSESSMENT
Howie Hawkins/Angela Nicole Walker, Green:
Statement: Focusing on police accountability, racial accountability, ending war on drugs and decriminalizing some drugs, fight against mass surveillance
My Opinion: I agree with their position, I am pro criminal law reform, so these steps seem like good ideas to me
Similarity to Platform: Seems pretty similar to the party platform, although the party platform was more comprehensive
Donald J. Trump/Michael R. Pence, Republican:
Statement: Not a plan as much as a list of achievements, notable ones were granting more funding to police and expanding their supplies, laws passed that promote crime reduction strategies and violent crime reduction in cities, and more funds for police to stop organized crime
My Opinion: I do not agree with these candidates stances on police funding, but I do agree with the and hope for more of the laws that promote violent crime reduction, although I am not sure exactly how they work
Similarity to Platform: These candidates stances actually seems to contradict their party platform, as one of the main points in the platform was that the police were over federalized, and a lot of these candidates achievements listed seem to involved federal funds and power being used to buffer the police
Gloria La Riva/Sunil Freeman, Peace and Freedom:
Statement: Very focused on racial reform involving police and police brutality, ending mass incarceration, and freeing political prisoners
My Opinion: I agree with their platform mostly, except I would have to look into these political prisoners they want free and decide for myself weather I would agree with that
Similarity to Platform: Very similar to platform, as both are very pro criminal justice reform
Roque De La Fuente "Rocky" Guerra/Kanye Omari West, American Independent]:
Statement: Stance not listed
My Opinion: Stance not listed
Similarity to Platform: Stance not listed
Because there were no stances listed concerning Criminal Justice Reform on their website, I contacted Roque De La Fuente with the following email:
Dear Roque De La Fuente,
The issue I am concerned about is criminal justice reform. I am concerned about this issue because I think it is very important, and because a lot of recent events concerning criminal justice and police brutality have taken place this year. I am currently a senior at Acalanes High School and I am researching this issue for my senior Government class. Please clarify your stance on this issue. Thank you so much for your time and good luck.
Sincerely,
Robert Kuhn
Jo Jorgensen/Jeremy "Spike" Cohen, Libertarian:
Statement: Focused on ending mass incarceration and war on drugs, decriminalization of all drugs, and reform police as well as limit their power and access to unneeded weaponry
My Opinion: I don’t know if I agree with legalizing every single drug, but I definitely agree with the police reform stance
Similarity to Platform: Seems similar to platform, with a focus on increasing the power of the individual citizen
Joseph R. Biden/Kamala D. Harris, Democratic:
Statement: Reduce incarceration, reform racial / gender / income bias, focus on rehabilitation, expand DOJ to be able to adress police brutality, eliminate death penalty, reform juvenile justice
My Opinion: I agree with these candidates stances, as I am pro criminal justice reform and so are they
Similarity to Platform: These stances are similar to the party platform, as both of them are very comprehensive and pro criminal justice, also focusing on juvenile justice reform

OHNE DICH [sem você] Dezessete anos atrás, Frankfurt, Alemanha. Inverno.
Havia tanto sangue.
A Sra.
NOTAS.
“Sag nichts zu Mama, Dummkopf.” "Não diga nada para mamãe, idiota.” “Hab keine Angst, mir geht es gut.” "Não se preocupe, estou bem." “Sprich mit mir!” "Fale comigo.” “Bitte verlass mich nicht! Ich brauche dich... Ich brauche dich so sehr... Helena... Nein.” “Por favor não me deixe! Eu preciso de você... Eu preciso tanto de você... Helena... Não.”

Cambridge Savings Bank Supports the Expansion of Tropical Products with a New Market Tax Credit and Loans Totaling $16 Million
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Cambridge Savings Bank (CSB), a full-service mutual bank with a customer-first approach and $6 billion in assets, today announced that it has provided $16 million in funding to support the expansion of Tropical Products, a private label manufacturer of personal, pet, and home care products. Based in Salem, Mass., the company manages the development of products for a variety of consumer brands that are sold by Walmart, Target, PetSmart, Petco, Amazon, and many other retailers.
Following the pandemic, Tropical Products experienced an increase in demand for local manufacturing services due to rising freight costs and associated supply chain disruption. As a result, the company was seeking a financial institution to help facilitate the acquisition of land in Salem and the construction of a nearly 100,000 square foot manufacturing and warehousing facility.
“We are extremely appreciative of the investment that Cambridge Savings Bank is making in our business and in the City of Salem,” said Edward Berman, Owner of Tropical Products. “With the high amount of uncertainty due to inflation and major fluctuations in the market right now, it would have been impossible to undertake this expansion without CSB providing us with a form of long-term and low-cost capital unavailable elsewhere in the market. Thanks to CSB’s investment, we will be able to grow Tropical Products, Inc. exponentially and create more jobs in our home of Salem.”
The total scope for development and execution of the project is $24.8 million. With the support of CSB, providing $16MM of loans; Tropical Products qualified for a New Market Tax Credit (NMTC) that provided over $5 million in equity for the project. As part of the NMTC transaction, CSB partnered with Mascoma Community Development, a subsidiary of Mascoma Bank, as the Community Development Entity (CDE) and U.S. Bank as the Investor. Additional parties integral for execution of this project were consultants Affirmative Investments, Inc. and CRR, LLP.
Tropical Products has seven automated filling lines that employ approximately 60 people, the majority of which are immigrants from more than 20 different countries that include: Haiti, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Sudan, Honduras, and Nepal. The new building will create an abundance of new jobs for people of all backgrounds who are seeking employment in the area.
“When the opportunity arises to support a company like Tropical Products, which shares CSB’s goal of supporting our local communities, we see it as our duty to support them,” said Angela Gee, SVP, Senior Corporate Banking Loan Officer at Cambridge Savings Bank. “The capital that we provided was not only an investment in the company’s growth, but also an investment in the growth of the Salem community.”
CSB’s commercial division is focused on serving the needs of their local communities and businesses, offering a full suite of Corporate Banking Lending, Commercial Real Estate Lending, Treasury Management, and Trade Services solutions.
