Andy Warhol Andy Warhol born Andrew Warhola Jr. August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American visual artist, film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silk-screening, photography, film, and sculpture. Some of his best-known works include the silkscreen paintings Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962) and Marilyn Diptych (1962), the experimental films Empire (1964) and Chelsea Girls (1966), and the multimedia events known as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable (1966–67).

Marilyn Diptych, Andy Warhol, 1962
Soon after Marilyn Monroe passed away on August 5, 1962, from a heroin overdose, Warhol painted her for the first time. Warhol's original image was a publicity shot from her 1953 film Niagara. The Marilyn Diptych contrasts the public and private lives of the star, who was at the time among the most well-known women in the world, by using two different canvases. Though it's possible that Warhol had other intentions. Two silver canvases with fifty silkscreened images of Marilyn Monroe each makeup Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych. Upon initial observation, the piece seems to be inviting us to adore the mythical figure, whose likeness Warhol took from popular culture and turned into an artwork. The apparent carelessness with which the paint is applied, as well as its "allover composition"—the even distribution of form and colour across the entire canvas, so that the viewer's eyes wander without focusing on one spot—are both hallmarks of Abstract Expressionism, as exemplified by Jackson Pollock's drip paintings. Yet, like Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, whose work he admired, Warhol uses photographic imagery, the silkscreen process, and repetition to create art that is not about his interior life, but rather about the culture in which he lived.
Warhol's use of the silkscreen technique "flattens" the star's face even further. The artist suspends the actress in an abstract nothingness by screening vast expanses of unmodulated colour and removing the subtle gradation that produces a feeling of three-dimensional volume. Warhol converts the actual flatness of the paper-thin marketing photo into an emotional "flatness," and the actress into a kind of robot, through these choices. In this way, the picture implies that "Marilyn Monroe," a manufactured star with a made-up name, is only a one-dimensional (sex) symbol—perhaps not the best object of our nearly religious devotion.

Warhol didn’t annihilate laughter—he would accept been beneath acclaimed if he had done so—but his amusement is muted, deadpan. In 1964, he produced a alternation of nine cottony screens of Jacqueline Kennedy’s face, based on columnist photos: one that showed her in the acclaimed beanie hat, aloof afore J.F.K. was shot; the additional as Lyndon Johnson was actuality affidavit in, on the aeroplane aback to Washington; the third at Kennedys funeral. There was annihilation candidly biting about these works. But in 1964, when, in the accessible mind, Kennedy’s anatomy was not yet cold, they aloft a question: What was Warhol saying? Viewers ability accept asked the aforementioned of his beforehand “Death and Disasters” alternation (1962-65), formed up from photographs of ied corpses blind out of ashore cars, burst bodies of bodies who had jumped to their deaths, the electric armchair in which Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, bedevilled of spying for the Soviet Union, were executed, and so on. Like the soup cans, the cottony screens were generally affably orted and, like the Marilyns and the Liz Taylors, covered with washes of ablaze color: blue, red, violet, yellow.
In the aforementioned year as the “Nine Jackies,” Warhol apparent cottony screens of his “Flowers,” big, baggy hibiscus blossoms adjoin a blooming field. They looked like wallpaper or, as Gopnik suggests, Marimekko dress fabrics. In any case, they were article that, clashing a account of an electric chair, you ability be accommodating to adhere over your living-room sofa. This was what they were allegedly advised for, because Warhol (or Malanga) angry out added than four hundred and fifty of them, in altered versions—different sizes, altered colorways, to use Gopnik’s aggressive word—and they awash like

when i was a young babby artist, i copied the pose of some favorite artist of mine at the time. it was just a nice sitting pose, it was fanart for some DC comic and i needed reference for this position.
they got very upset with me over this copying of the pose. they insisted i traced it tho it was just used as the reference. and when they overlayed the two art pieces and proved to themself it wasnt traced, they still complained to say ‘but why did you copy THAT piece? my anatomy was so bad!’ and still blocked me even after i removed the piece from my gallery.
as i am now an adult artist with a better + growing grasp on anatomy, i have experienced this very thing of people copying my posing. i do think its very funny when people copy a pose and its like... obvious due to them making anatomy mistakes they havent before (probably referencing a different artist for the rest of their gallery), or anatomy improvements happening after they start referencing my art.
i must say tho. when i was a babby artist copying the pose of a more successful adult artist, i was absolutely mistreated by the artist, they were being a big stinky fart to a beginner artist and that type of behavior makes the whole art field smell bad.
so nowadays its like... common practice to do this shit of saying someone fucking sucks, either skill wise, ideas wise, or MORAL wise, in order to push them out of the field, and then steal their ideas + spotlight.
the artists who copy me are not 5 years younger than me and underage, like i was when i copied that artist. they are not nobodies who i have no reason to feel threatened by. they arent just fans of my art, trying something new.
they are my competition in the art field. they are more successful then me and most times are trying to squander any success i might get. and they are taking everything i put out, sanitizing it of my own original creative intentions, and then putting out their shoddy piece of usually morally abhorrent art for MONEY. all while denying my art even exists, because that would expose the world to who they steal their ideas from. and thus expose them as being unoriginal hacks.
yayoi kusamas ideas were stolen by andy fucking warhol. he is FAMOUS for those soup cans and monroe paintings, but he stole the idea for that style from a young japanese artist, someone he knew wouldnt be able to fight against his shitty artist thievery due to her lifes position as an immigrant american and japanese woman post WW2. she struggled a LOT to survive as a japanese woman in america, let alone an artist, because of warhol and others in the art field at the time who copied her other works because nobody cared to defend her against the first offense. how do you succeed when people wont advertise you, steal your ideas, shut down where you put up your art, etc etc?
why isnt yayoi kusama a household name like assy warhoe? if it is her idea that he has stolen, and someone else who he paid to make the art for him of the soup cans and ms monroe, then is he not just a hoighty-toighty commissioner? is he an artist, or just the money? why do we praise that which did nothing but lie, cheat, steal, and sell out to the highest bidder?
