After the Uganda–Tanzania War, Tanzanian troops discovered Bloch's body in 1979 in a sugar plantation around 20 miles (32 km) from Kampala, near the Jinja Road. Visual identification was impossible because her face was badly burned, but the corpse showed signs of a leg ulcer. A pathologist working with the Israel Defense Forces formally identified Bloch from the remains. Her remains were returned to her son in Israel, where she was given an Israeli state funeral. She was buried in Jerusalem's Har HaMenuchot Cemetery. (Wikipedia)

Hi,there are several books about which I want to hear your opinion🙏:
First,"working for the Windsors"by Dina Wells Hood, the author was WE's secretary and I really want to read it,but the book was published in 1950s and it's hard to find a copy or ebook.I know there are some copies in some libraries in the US and Europe but I live in Asia so they are still unavailable for me.Have you read it?What do you think of it?
Second,do you recommend "the Windsor story"by Charles Murphy? According to the letters published by Michael Bloch, Murphy didn't get along with both of WE and lied much in the book. What do you think of it?Is it still worth reading?
Third, have you heard about the book"traitor king"?I haven't read it but seen some reviews on social media.Unless I'm mistaken,it's basically a collection of some ages old rumors including the ridiculous gossip of Wallis sleeping with Ribbentrop and WE refusing paying bills and so on.🙄
Thank you so much!🥰
Hi again!
I do not have Working for the Windsors nor have I read it cover-to-cover but I was able to skim a copy that's in a rare book section at the New York Public Library several years ago. I don't live there but was able to get a card and sign up to look at the book. Honestly there wasn't much interesting from what I saw, certainly not enough to keep me there for more than about an hour given I had a whole city worth of better things to do. That book is definitely one of the rarer ones. I think NYC and the Library of Congress are the only places that have it in the Eastern United States and you can't check it out from either, so it doesn't surprise me it would be even harder to find in Asia. From what I remember most of it was just a super detailed accounting of WE's houses and household routine, so if that aspect fascinates you that would be the main reason to want it. As for The Windsor Story, I do have that book and it can be a very useful resource even though it's extremely gossipy and everything in it should definitely be taken with a grain of salt. A lot of people in WE's orbit were interviewed so there are some interesting anecdotes that do seem a little plausible. One interesting thing I just found out reading Once A King was that apparently Charles Murphy's coauthor did most of the work. Looking back that makes a lot of sense because there's not a ton of inside information about the memoirs. I get the impression Murphy got along better with David than Wallis but there was definitely some annoyance on all sides with him keeping a very different schedule and work habits compared to WE. This book, like A LOT of them now, is on Archive.org and can be read for free if you log in with your Google account. Definitely a better option than paying for it. I haven't read The Traitor King though I did read some of the reviews and serialization and it seems like basically the same old allegations Charles Higham and Andrew Morton used with still very little in the way of actual evidence.

The Loki season two trailer dropped today. Judging from the trailer, the series seems to be leaning more into the series' horror elements. I'm basing that largely on the soundtrack because I have not met a single person that isn't creeped the fuck out by theremin music, myself included. That being said this is definitely your typical horror story. It falls into the social horror genre, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite subgenres.
Social horror is a newly emerging genre of horror that examines all of the fucked shit that we as a society allow to take place simply because the mainstream says that it's ok.
In the case of the Loki series that is allowing one person to take the fall for crimes that he didn't even do and also hunting down and murdering someone simply cause they're transgender. And I know that not everyone headcannons Sylvie as trans and for those of you who don't, I have a question for you:
If Sylvie isn't trans and was simply born female, then why didn't the TVA come for her as an infant? Why would they wait until she was a child capable of complex magic and, ya know, running away?
Just a little something to think about.
It does seem as though Sylvie's story is taking the back burner in season two. Or that's how it seems in this trailer. She didn't exactly turn out to be a fan favorite among stalkerish Hiddlestoners who can't stand to see Tom have a love life even if it's an imaginary one. Or among biphobic assholes who insist that being a straight-passing relationship negates a bisexual's queerness. So it would make sense if Sylvie got less screen time, but she was also a huge part of the season one story arc.
I, personally, thought it was nice that Loki had someone who didn't exist simply to remind him of what a terrible person he was simply for existing. But it's like I said their kiss didn't really eek me out as much as it did other people cause I guess I'm desensitized. Desensitization is what happens when you watch A LOT of horror movies over a long period of time. Or when you just live through so much fucked up shit that you just stop caring.
I do have a line, though, and I don't go out of my way to read about incest and shit like that. Like there's this book called All The Ugly & Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood that I absolutely refuse to read because the plot is basically that this girl's life is so fucked up that the only good thing she has is an incestous relationship with her brother or someone. That's just fucking torture porn, ok? It's disgusting. But the whole incest/self-cest trope also plays into the social horror thing cause that happens quite often in horror stories.
Cause usually when characters end up in a consensual incestous relationship it's because they've bonded over shared trauma and are kept so isolated both socially and psychically.....That I guess it starts to feel like it's impossible for someone other than this sibling or whoever to love and understand them.
It's not meant to be sexy or funny. It's meant to be tragic. And like you think you might be some desensitizing yourself I highly recommend--
Vampire Knight by Matsuri Hino
Flowers In The Attic by V.C. Andrews
Bates Motel tv series
Vampire Knight also exists as an anime, but I don't think the complete series was ever put to film. So if you wanna know how it ends then you need to read the manga. Flowers In The Attic is also a movie and you definitely want the 1987 version if you decide to watch it. Here's the trailer--
youtube
The movie is (or was) available to stream for free on Tubi.
And Bates Motel is a TV series that depicts a prequel to Robert Bloch's classic horror novel Psycho. The novel was adapted as a movie by Alfred Hitchcock whose well-known for putting horror movies on the map with his film, The Birds. Bates Motel stars Freddie Highmore and my favorite scream queen, Vera Farmiga who you may know from the Conjuringverse movies that depict the work of famed paranormal investigators (and con-artists) Ed and Lorraine Warren. Here's the trailer for that, too--
youtube
If you guys think some of these are too much for you to handle or that they're too triggering, I recommend looking up reaction videos and embracing schadenfreude because I can promise you if the person watching is a first time viewer.......Well, the first time I watched Bates Motel I was pretty much making this face the entire time--
So yeah.

What's the vibe? #77
Pentagram? Are you ok?
Pentagram recently did a rebrand of an American government website using AI all the way almost. They input their initial ideas into Midjourney to create symbols. I'm really not sure whether this was a great idea? To be one of the worlds biggest design agencies and openly saying that Midjourney got you from basically Step 2-> Step 10 without human input is quite bizarre.
"In 2024, the Federal Government of the United States partnered with Paula Scher’s team at Pentagram to design a website called performance.gov.
Federal law requires the White House and major agencies—such as Health and Human Services (HHS), the Department of Defense, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and others—to set strategic goals to benefit the public."
instagram
My favourite part of this is essentially: "The results from the first direction were interesting but the shapes had no meaning."
youtube
I was listening to this podcast this weekend called Middlebrow - mentioned last week - but in it, the writer and theorist Ruby Thelot said something about how tech people don't know or want to appreciate art. "Aside from video games, my friends in tech and in SF are not interested in being an audience to a culture that is not about them."
Why accept machines and their slightly soulless outputs when they're doing harm to us and wider culture?
Pyjama Tourism
This Vogue article is related to the long list of things relating to the rise of "new sleep culture", this sort of celebration of the bed rot or bed day for the healthy amongst us. I remember watching a video of a girl going to a shop in Rome getting the pyjamas at a store Harry Styles shops at. It's called Schostal.
Now the New York Times Style is talking about pyjamas as style and souvenirs. Tilting more on the American side but the trend could be more Western as the popularity of Tekla shows.
It's because of the cut: "Typically made locally with cotton fabrics and in classic cuts associated with men’s wear, the pajamas have for some people become a new souvenir of choice — and a way to signal their discerning taste."
Americans still revere European style: “There is a European-ness attached to these pajamas because they come from heritage stores,” said Laila Gohar, an artist who owns styles from labels in Italy and Austria. “We are seeing women bring them from Europe to America.”
"Schostal Originals is currently shipping about 75 percent of its online orders to the United States, said Andrew Bloch Fiorelli, who owns the company with his mother. It recently introduced pajama shirts without piping and pockets that are meant to look less like sleep wear."
Examples from Leila Gohar's collection: "P. Le Moult in Vienna, which start at $247; from Casa Del Bianco in Milan, which start at $120 and are offered in prints like Liberty of London florals; and from Schostal Originals in Rome, which start at 195 euros, or about $204.
Other popular makers include Paris em Lisboa in Lisbon, where pajama sets start at 110 euros, or about $115; and Magniberg, a newer Swedish brand founded by a former Acne Studios designer, where styles start at 292 euros, or about $305."
Pilot Magazine
Not exactly new but I like the way this magazine has a flip book style and it also has really great contributors for Issue 5. Pilot Magazine is "a digest dedicated to all things creative, experimental, and authentic." I just like the video as a nice way to imply another way to consume information.
Hus of Frakta
IKEA has opened its own luxury pop up to grow hype around its Oxford Street launch. Situated at the space where the IKEA will be is an interactive space.
You can personalise your own FRAKTA bag and turn it into a one-of-a-kind piece, you can shop a curated edit of IKEA products and bags and I guess take a photo on a blue hallway? Very similar to the Jacquemus experiences if you can say.
"Rooted in the five democratic design principles of IKEA – function, form, quality, sustainability, and affordability – the FRAKTA is available for just 75p, making it an indispensable part of everyday life. Nearly half of UK households (45%) own one, with many (31%) keeping theirs for over five years, proving that it’s not just a bag – it’s a part of their journey."
