UFC Fight Night: Pereira vs. Hernandez is basically the last Apex card for a long time as the UFC is closing the Apex to for renovations. From the sounds of it, they're going to be putting in space for a crowd of a few hundred to a thousand people.
In complete opposite of the other Apex dreck they've put out, I actually like this card. Pereira vs Hernandez is a fun fight between two guys who have been tearing up the lower levels of the middleweight division. Pereira moved up from welterweight and immediately turned into an explosive KO artist who is destroying fighters inside of like 2 minutes. Hernandez has been finishing everyone they put him in there with over his six fight win streak and is incredibly reminiscent to a fighter like Tristan Connelly, the undersized LW who gave Pereira his first loss in the UFC when he was still the flippy capoeira guy. Extremely compelling match up that will tell us a lot about the limitations of both fighters.
Kyler Phillips vs Rob Font is fun. Font is very much past it, but historically Phillips is not the type of guy who beats him. When Font loses, it tends to come off of big moments where he gets hurt extremely badly and can't really recover. That said, Figs was able to scare him off throwing his jab which is his money punch. A fighter like Phillips is capable of scoring big offense, even if he isn't a big finisher. It'll be interesting to see if Font is able to win wide stretches of this match up without giving up big moments.
Charles Johnson might have dumb opinions about UFC vs non-UFC fighters, but he's a solid flyweight and has finally managed to find consistency after a rough stretch. 3 straight wins, all showing off some good boxing skills. Now he draws Sumudaerji, who is a terrible grappler but a BIG puncher at flyweight. Two tall swanging flyweights. Should be a good fight.
Can't say too much about Brady Hiestand vs Jake Hadley, because while I'm sure I've seen Hiestand fight - I just don't remember him. That said, he's beaten fighters I have seen and Hadley is fun when he isn't held on his back.
Daniel Pineda vs Darren Elkins is the exact type of "old guys, what are we still doing here?" fight I love. Two 40 year old damage sponges still managing to pick up wins off their durability and ability to storm back to deliver violence. Something has to give.
I like Asu Almabayev. I feel like I'm the only person who isn't from Kazakhstan that likes him. I don't find his wrestle heavy game boring because man is tank. Seeing him throw around Jose Johnson was cool. And if he manages to that to someone like Matheus Nicolau, then he is an instant contender. This has stinker potential, but I'm fascinated by the match up.
Bantamweight has a tradition of triple A fighters (shouts to @thesportssoundoff for the phrase). Guys who are clearly too good for the regional scene but get to the UFC and just start losing fights - Luke Sanders, Andre Soukhamthath, Terrion Ware, etc. Guys with fatal flaws or shortcomings that just held them back from finding success. Brad Katona seems like one of those guys. He is a very technically sound all terrain fighter. But he seems to lack the horsepower to compete with these guys at 135lbs. That's why i like this fight with Jean Matsumoto, a very good grappler who will be tested on how adaptable his game is.
I still have hope for Melissa Martinez as a prospect. She's got a very fun game and I hope this fight with Alice Ardelean is a launching point for her. Especially not that it looks like Yazmin Jauregui isn't making a run up the rankings.
Also Robelis Despaigne vs Austen Lane is the exact type of stupid fight that will last 15 seconds or go 15 minutes after both guys get tired after 15 seconds. And I'm here for that as long as it's early in the night.

Andre Soukhamthath FINISHES Luke Sanders in the 2nd round!
My WORD MY WORD! Dude was getting pelted and smelted in the first round at distance and in tight. He just looked uncomfortable, struggling to string anything together and then in the second round, it was more of the same. A flurry begins, Sanders has his chin up in the air floating around waiting to be eaten up on and then CRUNCHED by a counter hook! Andre Soukhamthat dives in, lands all kinds of ground and pound and finishes the fight! Stoppage was just IMO since Sanders face planted twice and was about to shoot on the referee. Maybe Rosenthal was a little too close?
Fucking hell Luke Sanders has two losses that fall into the "I was winning and then" category. God damn.

MMA Forethought: UFC 222
By Edward Carbajal
Follow @Carbazel
3/2/2018
UFC 222 features the quick return of Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino who is ready to defend her title against Invicta FC’s Yana Kunitskaya. Also in the co-main event, a contender match between the number one and number two featherweights in the UFC, Frankie Edgar and Brian Ortega face off to be the next man to fight for the title.
As always, Frontproof Media will take a look at the main card and attempt to give some forethought on how the fights could go down.
Cris “Cyborg” Justino (19-1-1) vs. Yana Kunitskaya (10-3)
This is a quick turnaround for Justino who just fought a very smart five-rounds against Holly Holm at UFC 219. She won a unanimous decision and the damage she took was minimal but when you add on weight cutting and another training camp so soon, one has to wonder how much she has truly recuperated. That being said, Justino showed she is more than strong and tough in her last fight and likely is good enough to face Kunitskaya. Kunitskaya touts seven of her ten wins by way of KO or TKO so she does have more than a puncher’s chance at winning. This is a tough fight to call but Justino has never been more motivated and she wins more than a title defense lately when she wins in the UFC, she wins a lot of respect and that could be what’s driving her to dominate this division.
Frankie Edgar (21-5-1) vs. Brian Ortega (13-0)
The destiny of Frankie Edgar and Max Holloway keeps getting put on hold due to injury. What is in place for UFC 222 is still worthy of pay-per-view status with undefeated Brain Ortega coming as a replacement with his highlight submission over Cub Swanson at UFC ___. Ortega has had a lot of hype behind him because of his performances in the cage. The young contender has worked his way to the top of his division with no trash talk; a rarity these days. However, the UFC has put rising stars in front of Frankie Edgar before and when Edgar “Answers” the promotion by testing these new guys, the new guys usually fail. Ortega will certainly be tested Edgar at UFC 222, he stands a chance at passing, but it is a slim chance.
Sean O'Malley (9-0) vs. Andre Soukhamthath (12-5)
O’Malley has been one of the most impressive and probably the most active and high profile fighter coming off of The Contender Series on UFC Fight Pass. Soukhamthath is coming off of second-round TKO win from the same card Ortega earned his shot tonight. If that means anything he could surprise fans tonight, but nothing seems to phase the undefeated O’Malley who holds most of his wins by knock out. He’s a heavy favorite in this fight and can likely do well here.
Andrei Arlovski (26-15) vs. Stefan Struve (32-9)
Arlovski has been in the game a long time. The former UFC heavyweight holds 17 wins by KO, three by submission and is coming off of a decision win over Junior Albini last November. While he has been having a hard time lately, the last win shows he still has some fight in him. Struve may be the tallest fighter in the promotion but sometimes he does not utilize the reach he has been blessed with. Still, the 30-year-old from the Netherlands could pose some trouble for Arlovski whose chin has been tested a lot lately and didn’t always pass. This one is a toss-up, but the safe money might be on Struve.
Ketlen Vieira (9-0) vs. Cat Zingano (9-2)
The “Alpha” Cat Zingano has been out of action for a while but her drive to earn a title has never wavered. She holds wins over current bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes, and former champ Miesha Tate. Zingano is a tough fight no matter how long she’s been out of action but Veira is likely aware and ready for what Zingano brings to UFC 222. The undefeated Brazilian is riding a three-fight-win streak of her own and Zingano will certainly be her toughest test to date. Zingano could show some ring rust when they fight, but if she doesn’t this is her fight to win.
UFC 222 takes place Saturday night live on pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. If Cyborg wins, expect “greatest of all time” (G.O.A.T.) conversations to follow.

So the UFC is probably going to be axing off plenty of fighters unfortunately (there’s simply no way to do 42 shows a year only with a roster around/over 600f ighters) and we saw 12 guys and gals get let go.
Curtis Millender is the big name and while I wouldn’t consider him an egregious cut; he had lost two in a row including a gimme tune up of sorts. I still think he’ll be back.
Same for Andre Soukhamthath who finishes his UFC run at 2-5 but took plenty of fights that other folks probably didn’t want.
Manny Bermudez is the best prospect cut. He’ll try his hand on the regionals and I BET he’ll show up on the DWCS.

‘I’m knocking people out, I’ve got colourful hair and I’m talking a lot of smack’
Sean O’Malley beat Eddie Wineland at UFC 250 in June to salvage his knowledgeable picture to 12-0
Along with his extravagant tattoos, explosive punching vitality, and immense, vivid hair, Sean O’Malley is perchance basically the most flamboyant fighter in the UFC.
Even his dog has received caught up in the hype.
O’Malley went for a rainbow invent in his hair at UFC 250, when the American produced a brutal first-round knockout of Eddie Wineland to mark a co-main match plan for Saturday’s UFC 252.
Next up for the unbeaten bantamweight, 25, is Marlon Vera so this time he has dyed his hair the purple, yellow and blue of his Ecuadorian opponent’s nationwide flag. And, for the first time, his Bichon Frise had his hair dyed too.
“That is my boy Cush,” O’Malley tells BBC Sport. “He wished his hair like his dad so we made it happen.
“I’m honest appropriate showing my Ecuadorian fans some cherish. Every conflict I desire to manufacture a minute something assorted and rep an even time. The fans cherish it, the media cherish it, or no longer it is something to discuss about.”
Since returning to action in March after two years out, he has become one in all the game’s most talked about fighters.
“I’m knocking folks out, I’ve received vivid hair and I’m talking a quantity of smack so that is the strategy it goes,” he says. “The extra that discuss the simpler.”
‘Welcome to the Sugar Advise’
O’Malley and his dog Cush rep both had their hair dyed sooner than the conflict with Marlon Vera
One of O’Malley’s first MMA coaches nicknamed him ‘Sugar’ due to this of he is “sweet to scrutinize”, and UFC fans soon received a taste when he appeared on the first season of Dana White’s Contender Collection in 2017.
He showcased his respect-catching style with spinning kicks and flying knees sooner than producing a one-punch knockout of Alfred Khashakyan which introduced UFC president White to his toes.
O’Malley illustrious with a backflip sooner than mountain climbing on high of the cage and roaring “Welcome to the Sugar Advise”. In the intervening time, rapper Snoop Dogg, providing substitute commentary, screamed his title again and again, alongside side: “I gotta meet this kid, man.”
It used to be no surprise to peer O’Malley awarded a UFC contract that night sooner than hanging out with Snoop in his trailer.
O’Malley, who trains in Phoenix, Arizona, then confirmed he has grit to head with the glamour by claiming a decision salvage over Andre Soukhamthath on is plump UFC debut in March 2018 despite struggling a foot hurt.
After taking his knowledgeable picture to 10-0, O’Malley needed to habits his submit-conflict interview whereas he lay on the canvas, and the rising superstar used to be then compelled into a two-one year ruin.
Why the logo-unique UFC 4 rankings possess some shocks
‘I’m co-main match due to this of I’m making Snoop Dogg scurry crazy’
In October 2018 after which August 2019, O’Malley used to be given six-month bans for trying out determined for a efficiency-enhancing substance, ostarine, even supposing the UFC acknowledgedexterior-hyperlink the 2d occasion used to be a case of “complement contamination” and there had been “no proof of intentional use”.
It gentle intended a total of two years out of the octagon.
It also gave O’Malley time to reassess his profession and rep his label. He does a podcast alongside with his friend and coach Tim Welch, he reside streams on Twitch and has a YouTube channel.
Last month, O’Malley launched his possess merchandise vary, with the first batch of 100 jerseys selling out in 39 seconds, but he says struggling with comes first.
“I received pretty of notoriety from the Andre conflict and I deem these two years off gave me a quantity of time to deem and keep in mind that I in actuality settle on to quit grounded, withhold the same circle round me and revel in the minute issues in existence to withhold me humble,” he says.
“There is a quantity of free time as a talented athlete and I capitalise on that. I revel in doing all these issues. But I’m no longer in the co-main match plan due to this of I’ve received one million followers on Instagram, or no longer it is due to this of I’m knocking folks out, making Snoop Dogg scurry crazy.”
Sugar Advise 2.0
O’Malley looked veritably flamboyant for the media day sooner than his conflict with Jose Quinonez at UFC 248
In his first conflict wait on, O’Malley done Mexico’s Jose Quinonez in the first round in March. He dubbed it “Sugar Advise 2.0”, but in actuality or no longer it is the same archaic Sugar.
“I abolish no longer scurry in there thinking I’ve received to be like, or no longer it is honest appropriate what I fabricate,” he says. “I’m a pure-born fighter. I deem my style, my physique form, is the entirely for struggling with.”
O’Malley adopted that up with the victory over Wineland and he now has his third conflict in 5 months.
It again takes allege in an empty arena in Las Vegas, so he is requested fans to film their reaction “when” he knocks Vera out.
“I honest appropriate explore one more highlight reel KO,” he says. “Colorful I am going to rep millions scrutinize me fabricate what I desire to manufacture is my motivation. I revel in observing how I abolish folks feel and the fan reaction to my closing knockout used to be improbable.”
O’Malley has an Irish grandmother and Conor McGregor would be his “dream conflict”, but he feels inspiring for Petr Yan’s bantamweight title in 2021 “would abolish sense”.
To manufacture that, he must first beat Vera in a “striker versus grappler match-up” in the latest episode of the Sugar Advise.
