More from Andie Airfix on Steve:
It’s difficult to say much more about Def Leppard without writing about Steve Clark. The second major tragedy to befall the band was the death of their amazing lead guitarist. During the recording of ‘Hysteria’ Steve often showed up to rehearsals or recording sessions drunk. Alcoholism became a serious problem. In 1991, on a six-month leave of absence from the band, Steve was found dead at his home in London. An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be accidental – a lethal mixture of anti-depressants, painkillers and alcohol. Steve lived in London, only a few streets away from where I live in Chelsea, and we often met in a small old-fashioned but wonderful pub called ‘The Cross Keys’ – so I knew him better than the other guys in the band. I really liked him and we became close in a haphazard, occasional kind of way. Steve had a generosity of spirit and a vulnerability which was very attractive, but something deeply troubling was never far from the surface. Whenever I travelled to meet the band Steve always took the time and made the effort to look after me – the perfect gentleman, always aware of nervous or uncomfortable situations. Whenever I met him in ‘The Cross Keys’ I always felt the need to look after him. It’s hard to explain why I felt that way and, despite his reputation for heavy drinking, he was rarely out of control when I saw him. I guess I just felt the need to protect him from a world he often found terrifyingly complicated and difficult to deal with. Away from adoring fans and where he did what he loved most – play guitar – he was usually quiet, sensitive and introspective, He obviously found it difficult to reconcile the two extremes. Don’t get me wrong, he was rarely miserable or depressed – we often had evenings of non-stop laughter – but there was always a nervous undercurrent of someone who could easily be thrown off-balance. What I felt with him was a responsibility to help maintain the balance. There are people in all our lives we feel privileged to meet and Steve was right up there with the best of them in mine.

social distancing tag game - thanks @dracolizardlars for tagging me in this! (Glad you’re doing okay btw <3 )
are you staying home from work/school? yeah, I’m working from home during my placement year - but I’m still staying at the placement, if that makes sense? So I’m doing a year work experience in Scotland, and I’m staying in Scotland as long as possible rather than going back to England.
if you’re staying home, who is with you? I am at my bf’s house because I some how ended up self-isolating with him and his family, so it’s me, my bf, his mum, stepdad, brother, dog (Bailey) and two chinchillas (Lucifer and Larry)
who would be your ideal quarantine mate? my crochet and my ocarina, which are stupidly at my student flat. or a swimming pool lmao. I already have my bf and his dog so I’m good.
are you a homebody? Kind of, although I don’t appreciate being told that I can’t go out. And I can only walk for an hour and I can’t go sea swimming.
an event you were looking forward to that got cancelled? doing 2 weeks work experience at my old secondary school in the Science Dept as a teaching assistant. I felt like I was going to get my life figured out but guess that’s not happening lol
Also I’m just praying that my Azores field trip in september doesn’t get cancelled I will actually cry
what movies have you watched recently? I’m being forced to watch a bunch of action movies bc my bf loves tham and finds it appalling that I haven’t seen them, so we’ve watched all the Transformers, Tron Legacy, John Wick... but I did make him watch Begin Again and Tangled and he cried
what shows are you watching? Gotham and Castlevania, but I’m itching to watch Clone Wars and the Mandalorian (thank fuck for Disney+)
what music are you listening to? I’m trying to broaden my music taste so it’s not just country music or ABBA, so I’ve listened to a bunch of Andy Black, K. Flay and Volbeat.
what are you reading? Crown of Midnight, second in the Throne of Glass series. Would highly recommend!
what are you doing for self-care? Napping, getting cuddles from a chubby cocker spaniel and my bf, listening to music on full blast while I ignore the world, making and painting some Warhammer 40K and Necromunda models, making tabletop rpg terrain out of lolly sticks and hot glue, making airfix (genuinely forgot how much I love making random shit)... basically arts and craft lmao. I’m also learning how to properly throw and catch a frisbee (I’ve only twisted my ankle and got hit in the face once!). It’s weird though, I’ve never felt better about my self image than I have this month, and I’ve been really happy (and lucky with who I got stuck with lol.)
tagging @raposinhachan @eatingisfab @paintingit @fuckyahumor and anyone else who wants to do it :D Look after yourselves peeps <3

4 OF 4: Over the weekend, I found a set of three rare U.K. shaped picture discs that were made for the Thompson Twins’ minor hit, “You Take Me Up.” This is the whole set put together to form a giant jigsaw puzzle of real, playable records! Kinda resembles a snowboard actually.
The art director for this project—and many of the band’s records—was Andie Airfix, who has a great, educational post on his blog about how this set came about, exploring some of the design choices and the creative necessity of collaborating with manufacturers

Sad to hear of one of my favorite graphic designers passing yesterday. Andie Airfix designed a massive amount of my record collection (Thompson Twins and Dead Or Alive to name a few) and inspired myself and many others to become graphic designers. My thoughts are with his husband and partner, Richard. The design world may have lost one of their mentors, but his influence and inspiration will reign on in design history. Went for one of those Asmus teen doll bodies, the ones they show being used for the child Wolverine, and not entirely sure I want it but having the feeling I don’t want to miss out on it and... Doll stuff.
There are mini/midi 20-23cm littles in the dollhouse so I have an idea about the size. The Asmus is a non gendered prepubescent body which will open it up for many uses. It’s like I knew when I bought it that it would be too small to be Martin Gore or some other Twink but it’s not here yet.
And self even if you had a less anemic toned version of the body Jimmy Page was using it’s too underfed for Martin. Didn’t say it couldn’t work for Vince Clark, he’s always well clothed, or someone else.
There are plans to do doll stuff stuff if the back will allow.
And speaking of dollhouses...
That’s Eloise, after the song The Damned covered, she’s an Obitsu 21 with what ever the round rooted head is. The unthatched bald spot in the part is just part of who she is.
This dollhouse ~shakes fist then cries, doesn’t want to talk about why it never finished because it was a dark time~ First off that is a legit product. Greenleaf makes 1/144 scale versions of some of their 1/12 kits. They’re still a bit $$$ but you get the quality you pay for. If you look around you might luck out and score one for a decent price on Ebay.
I kept the plans for that tiny house so I could try and make a replacement. I also have some full sized plans from another company and supposedly there’s a kit in the hoard somewhere that should I even be allowed to look at it I might consider steampunking for my 5″ Doctors. It is having a cat and destructive asshole safe place that keeps me from working on it. And if I did it in my room I don’t know if I could get it past my pre ADA doorway.
Still the nicest house we’ve lived in all century and I’ll leave it at that.
Basically if your 1/6 scale dolls want toys the 1/144 scale has things to be found. I think it’s a model railroad size. I also have some 1/72 Airfix sized toys from my journey through life that works well. They have some Micro Machines too.
You can’t make me leave the party if you can’t find me. That one’s a 21cm Volks Midi F, the head is also a Volks but he’s on an Obitsu 21cm male now. I have a matched pair of flesh toned Midi Fs now, and if they weren’t too small and child like they’d be short listed for Vince and Martin.
With Fletch’s head due when ever, Thang’s package and the Asmus are racing to get here, I know I’ll be wanting a Martin at least to keep him company. That’s one of the reasons I went with the 25cm Coos, just to see how it will look size wise. It’s too buff to be Martin but in looking at Andy Bell he’s not too much taller in flats and he’s been buffing up recently.
You’re deep in to dolling if your mind is already thinking if Thang’s head will fit on the Coos then Andy’s head will because it’s the same company and the skin tone should be a much better match than the China clone and even though he’ll have visible joints a constant skin tone will go over better with some of those costumes and I can get started sewing for him...
If one of the DMLs will work then I’ll go that way.
The dolls wish they had a fashion designer friend.
Someone play Money or is it Opportunities by The Pet Shop Boys. It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to that copy of a copy of a copy of their greatest hits cassette.

A tale of the Terror Twins from Andie Airfix:
The ‘Terrible Twins. Dublin. Diamonds. Steve and Phil were legless in Dublin and they decided it would be fun to head for Cartier and spend some money. Cartier were not prepared for the 2 lunatics, off their heads, who tumbled into their precious, expensive environment, flaunting a fistful of credit cards. It must have really pissed them off to have to politely deal with the dangerously unknown quantity lurching around the shop. They started to buy stuff and the assistant they were dealing with was smugly confident that at some point the credit cards would explode. I can’t remember whether it was Phil or Steve, but one of them asked the hapless individual, ‘Where are the fuckin’ diamonds? We want big diamonds.’ At this point the assistant thought his time had come, but as each sale was processed the card delivered a resounding confirmation of the sale. The boys decided to push the limits, but as the diamonds got bigger, and prices became astronomical, each sale was processed. With their bags of goodies, the Boys left the shop and headed home.
If the assistant’s world was thrown into chaos and insanity he couldn’t deal with that day, he must have thought at least the shop had made a fortune. Not to be I’m afraid. Realising the next day that their impromptu extravagant spending spree had made them the beneficiaries of ‘fuckin’ rubbish we don’t want’, Steve and Phil went back to Cartier and told the assistant exactly that and dumped their treasure trove on the counter, denying the poor bastard the only consolation he had for the ordeal he’d suffered the previous day. The small fortune they had given Cartier was retrieved and the Twins sauntered out of the shop. Pure genius. Pure Rock’n’Roll.
